LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
I have two properties on House Mountain. One in Maragani Court and the other on Greggs Road. They both have a common fence line. Have lived here for over 23 years. Normally we see a wallaby or two once in a while. Not as frequently as we see them now. Every day. Now that is not the problem.
The problem is that the road kill has climbed astronomically. It coincided with the land development on Gibbons Road. If you are an animal person, it’s upsetting. Each kill I’ve buried were females with pinkies in their pouch. One had died with its mum and the other was alive and taken to the vet. My problem is that House Mountain is a koala habitat and recognised by the Moreton (Bay Regional) Council as such. But they allowed development. I have never seen so much machinery in such a small development. The noise is enough to scare off any animal. I came to Samford for the rural lifestyle. Peace and quiet no longer.
Richard Buchanski
So the local drivers have again managed to demolish more of the posts around the car parks outside the shopping centre. Wouldn’t it be nice for the Council to maybe recognise the problem and replace the short posts with longer ones that can be seen by drivers of cars and 4WDs? Or better still, nail some of the thin metal roadside posts to the edge of all of the wooden posts and make them clearly visible. This may be a quick and cheap solution to the problem.

A New Pathway of Progress
Have you seen the new pathway along Cash Avenue?
Construction has just been completed of a new 320m long by 1.5m wide reinforced concrete pathway linking Main Street Samford with the western side of Cash Avenue. (Pictured below)
The project is part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Missing Link Pathways Program. The objective of this project has been to provide an all-weather footpath solution to improve user friendliness and safety for local pedestrians and cyclists in Samford Village.
From Main Street, the footpath passes by Snap Fitness, the Samford Scout Group, the new Scout Trails Gardens created by Samford Landcare, and connects to Cash Avenue which leads to Samford Road. Many readers will remember this throughfare as where a railway line once occupied the route.
The Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA) supports projects for our area that enhance a sustainable lifestyle. Area residents are justifiably excited to finally have an all weather footpath that allows access to and from Main Street Samford.

Young Champion Gallops to Victory
At just five years old, Liv Mennie has done herself and her school proud, taking out the Champion Show Horse Primary award at the 2023 Hygain Interschool Queensland State Championships.
Held in Toowoomba over the school holidays, Liv and her pony To-Lara Park Diva (Edie) competed in the Primary Show Horse Walk/Trot class at the Equestrian Queensland event. The Samford State School prep student was beaming with pride as she was presented with her ribbon.
Liv’s mum Kylie Mennie said the young champion was, “very excited to win as this was our first year competing in Interschools and Liv was one of the youngest competing.”
“Liv started riding from the age of three and has been riding her current pony Edie since February 2022. She’s very dedicated to the sport and most days will come home from school and ride Edie,” Kylie said.
The show horse event was judged over two phases; a rider class judged on the rider, and a ridden class judged on the horse. Liv was required to do two different workouts for each class.
The lead-up to the event was not without drama, with the State Government telling all State schools to pull their affiliation with Equestrian Queensland one week before they were due to compete. This would have meant that riders could only compete as individuals and not represent their school.
“Thankfully the decision was overturned about three days out from the comp and we were able to compete for Samford State School,” Kylie said.
In order to ride at the Queensland State Interschool competition, participants must first qualify for entry. Liv won the South East Queensland Regionals Interschool Championships in April this year allowing her to enter the State Championships.
Despite reaching this level of riding, Liv and Edie can also be spotted at local events.
“Liv rides at a lot of the local Ag shows, she competed at the Dayboro show and the Samford show,” Kylie said.
“We have a very busy few months ahead with some big shows coming up, but we
are very excited to compete at our very first Ekka next month.”
Congratulations Liv and Edie on your phenomenal achievement.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club members looking regal at the Samford Show. Updates on results in next edition.
Last month, Samford’s 107 Army Cadet Unit won the Cadet Games held at Sandgate. This is a competition between Army, Navy and Air Force cadets, as well as teams from Surf Life Saving, SES, Rural Bush Fire and PCYC. The games were opened by the Minister and Commissioner of Police, as the host organisation for the games. Over 50 teams competed on the day, with competitions in drill, communication, leadership and team activities.
The Samford 107 ACU team took out first place for the first time, and some members also placed first in the mixed teams. This win is such a great achievement for the unit, as it shows that teamwork, leadership and excellence in what we do does work. Building the next generation of leaders within our community has never been brighter.
We have had several promotions lately. We welcomed new Cadet Sargents and Corporals to the ranks and looking forward to their contribution to the team. We have some great activities coming up this term,
with the Brigade Field Exercise in September the main annual event.
Australian Army Cadets (AAC), a youth development program for 13-18yrs, acts to promote pride in the self, community and nation. Against common belief, although the AAC has strong affiliation with the Australian military, cadets are not part of the Army nor obligated to join when they come of age. The AAC, however, aims to be an inclusive environment where one can experience adventurous activity and cultivate the values of courage, respect, teamwork and integrity. Army Cadets is founded on strong community partnerships which involves parents and other organisations such as the RSL.
We parade from 1800 to 2030 every Monday excluding holidays at the Samford Community Hub (SCHUB). If interested in joining, please contact the Officer commanding on 107ACU@armycadets.gov. au.
We are taking new recruits now, so if you are between 13 and 16 years old, send an email and then come on down on Monday night to have a go.
We Want You for the Samford Army Cadet Unit.

FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW
Once owned by CSIRO, the old glasshouses on Mount Samson Road remain silent today but were once a hive of activity, researching improved pasture options for livestock state-wide. One person who could be regularly spotted there with a petri dish of seedlings was Eric Giesemann. He gained employment at CSIRO when it commenced in the area in 1955, initially as a farm labourer before working his way through various positions until his retirement in 1984 as a Technical Assistant Grade 2.
Eric passed away in 2000, but his daughter Jennifer Eeles got in touch with Community Library Samford as part of a family project to create a visual biography of his life. Jennifer has been kind enough to share Eric’s story and provide a snapshot of Samford one generation ago.
Coming from a strong agricultural background, Eric’s Samford venture began in 1949 when he purchased a 309 acre dairy farm. Timing was unkind to the new landowner though, as the district experienced severe drought in the early 1950s. This caused Eric to lease the farm and seek external work, initially with Winn Brothers Sawmillers before planting his roots at CSIRO.
In 1961, he purchased the family house in Main St where present-day Makers on Main, PoolWerx and Hardware Junction stand.
At CSIRO, Eric worked in the Plant Introduction nurseries, where new international plant species were introduced to Queensland. When the first glasshouses were built in the early 1960s, it was a natural progression to transfer the nurseries from the field set-up to the glasshouses, protecting the plantings from genetic contamination with outside pollen.
As a farm assistant, Eric grew, maintained, observed and took notes of tropical grass
and legume species as well as lucerne for experiments and seed production within the glasshouses. If this process was successful, plantings would be transferred to the fields and trialled there.
In the 1970s as a technical assistant, Eric was in charge of the newer Quarantine Glasshouses which maintained optimum conditions to cross-breed selective introduced species. He was involved in the germination and laboratory trials, producing seed cultivated from these selective breeds.
During his time at CSIRO, Eric was considered an expert in seed germination. This was key for good yield outcomes with the experiments he was involved in. Widely regarded as being efficient and reliable, he had a natural affinity for this type of cultivation work.
Eric’s horticultural talents extended to providing an extensive vegetable garden for his family in the area where Hardware Junction now resides. He also established an irrigation system that pumped creek water to efficiently irrigate the garden. His daughters Jennifer and Dianne remember their dad as a caring father who loved to spoil his kids with little things he knew they would like.
Though CSIRO no longer operates in the area, Eric’s work lives on for many farmers today who have him and his team to thank for greener fields when conditions get tough.

THE STRUGGLES AND SERVICES OF OUR RSL
We pass the modest cream RSL House every day. We walk our dogs along the Avenue of Honour and on days of remembrance we gather to thank those who gave so much. What we sometimes forget, is that our RSL run by volunteer veterans, is still giving despite incredible struggles, not only to veterans but to our community.
Our Samford RSL offers a friendly Pensions Advocacy Welfare Service (PAWS) for veterans each weekday from 9am til noon-ish. It helps with Department of Veterans Affairs applications, emergency
financial and homeless veteran assistance, and social connection fellowship sessions. If you are in need of these services, you can contact Samford RSL on 3289 6928 or email samford@rslqld.org.
ANZAC Day activities and other significant commemorations at our serene Avenue of Honour, which was envisaged by the RSL along with the local Rotary and Lions clubs and opened on the Centenary of Gallipoli, 25 April 2015, are very much part of our village fibre.
Every year the RSL welcomes community entertainments to their Memorial Park, originally mooted for ANZAC services and as a children’s park. At Christmas on Main
Street last year, the magical Storyland was especially for our children. The vibrant Samford and District Playgroup, another RSL gift to our children, welcomes families to their little hall in the park on the corner of Progress and Main Streets. Contact them through samfordplaygroup@gmail.com.
JPs in the Community, started by the RSL, is at the Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) on Tuesdays between 4pm and 7pm and Thursdays between 9am and noon – a walk-in service for everyone.
The original icon of remembrance was the Samford Honour Roll, a list of the twenty-four locals who fought in World War 1. Seventeen were wounded or gassed, three were killed in action, and one was a prisoner of war. In 1919, the Roll was hung in the Samford Railway Station, central and vital to the growing community.
World War II again saw many locals go to war, though farmers, considered essential, were exempt. After the war in 1947, the Samford RSL Sub-Branch was formed. Its members fundraised tirelessly to purchase five small blocks of land and to build the small hall out of recycled materials obtained by the legendary Jack Mitchell from a Narangba Chicken Farm. The Honour Roll was moved there upon its opening. The little hall is used today by the Samford and District Playgroup.
After the closure of the railway in 1955, many jobs were lost. The RSL lost most of its members and was forced to close. Its hard-won land was transferred in trust to Gaythorne RSL. The Honour Roll was moved to the Farmers’ Hall. With the reformation of the Sub-Branch in 1989, the land was transferred back to Samford RSL. A house was moved to the site, renovated by the members, and opened as our RSL House in 2004. The Samford Honour Roll finally found its permanent home. In 2015 the names of the twenty Samfordites killed in World Wars One and Two and Korea have been venerated, along with many others in the Avenue of Honour, the RSL’s greatest gift to Samford.

Museum
Practical crafts such as knitting, crochet and embroidery were learnt by every schoolgirl and young woman at school sewing lessons to dressmaking classes. Items exhibited at the Samford Show are evidence that some ladies continue to enjoy these interests in this era of ready-made clothing and household linen.
In the Samford Museum’s collection, we get glimpses of practical embroidery from the 1890s in Weldon’s Practical Mountmellick Embroidery book. Examples include a nightdress case or sachet with matching comb case. The case (pictured), 17 inches long, 11 inches deep and a 3 ½ inch flap, is made from white satin jean of the best quality. The chosen design is traced onto the fabric. Details of cottons required for the various stitches are given.
The completed items are edged with fringed buttonholing. Design features were of passion flowers, fruit, daffodils, hops and blackberries. These items were often given as gifts or retained by the worker for her own use.
Visitors to the Samford Museum are usually surprised at the variety of themed displays from fashion items to farming equipment, transport and education. It is not hard to find something that is of
particular interest for all age groups. Add to this, the reminiscences and photographs, which document the day to day lives of the many who have lived and worked in our districts over the decades since the 1850s.
The Samford Museum in Station Street, adjacent to John Scott Park, is open Wednesday and Sunday 10am-4pm or by appointment for groups. A small admission is charged.
The museum is managed by volunteer members and is self-funded except for successful grant applications for specific projects. Members thank Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank for the recent grant to produce Samford Reminiscences
Volume 7.

Young Entrepreneurs
If you’ve recently called out a plumber or attended a local yoga class, you may have noticed that Samford is home to a range of young entrepreneurs who have taken a chance on themselves and their ideas to start their own business. Over the next few weeks, we’re taking the opportunity to find out how some of our young locals are forging their own way in and around the Valley.
Andrew Butler | Range Diagnostic & Mechanical
Bringing his Porsche, Nissan and Mitsubishi workshop experience to Samford, Andrew Butler recently started his own vehicle repair service that conveniently comes to you. Range Diagnostics & Mechanical has accelerated its reputation among locals, with a crowd of happy customers sharing their recommendations online.
Andrew’s drive to start his own business was largely fuelled by his kids.
“Doing long hours and having two children under four, I wanted to be closer to our home in Samford to spend more time with my family and gain a better work life balance,” Andrew said. “I enjoy bringing resolutions to ongoing problem vehicles and customer concerns, so I decided to focus on this as the main building block for Range Diagnostic & Mechanical and really bring a new side to vehicle repair and maintenance by adding a transparency, honesty and value.”
Andrew started his career back in the UK when he left school at 16 to work at a friend’s father’s workshop. He then went
on to do his apprenticeship getting various cars, trucks and motorbikes back on the road.
After working for different manufacturers, Andrew moved to Australia to further his career at Nissan and Mitsubishi, carrying out diagnostics and quality control before controlling workshops. He then moved into a similar position at Porsche.
Andrew enjoyed, “the day to day running of the workshop and pushing my focus to customer care, trying to resolve ongoing concerns with vehicles so customers had a mechanical person as a point of contact.”
With Range Diagnostic & Mechanical relatively new to the area, Andrew’s services have spread through word of mouth
recommendations and via Facebook, but this has been more than enough to keep him busy.
“I think the people of the Samford region really appreciate meeting the person working on their vehicle, and knowing the information that is passed on is the information being used to repair or maintain the vehicles they have,” Andrew said.
“Also being fully mobile, my customers appreciate the fact that they can carry on working from home or office and I can slot in to their day with minimal impact on them.”
Buoyed by his business growth and encouraging feedback, Andrew has a fulltime workshop in mind for the future.
“With this said though, we will always keep the personal touch with our customers, and still try to fit around their schedules as best as possible,” Andrew said.
He is also looking to incorporate a loan vehicle to his current service if a customer’s vehicle is unable to be driven.
“We are now fully equipped to carry out on-site air conditioning diagnostics and repairs, so coming into spring, this I think will be a very welcome service,” Andrew said.
“I would personally like to thank the people of this community for the great feedback we have received and it’s a privilege to be able to operate within this community doing what I love.”

Study Investigates Technology to Help Older Adults Manage HeatRelated Health Issues
Extreme heat kills more people in Australia than any other natural disaster. Here in the Sunshine State, over 100 lives are lost each year from exposure to high temperatures. Without taking the right steps to protect ourselves and keep our homes cool, extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. On top of this, heat can reduce sleep quality, worsen medical conditions, and put greater pressure on our heart. Although heat can impact anyone’s health, people over the age of 65 are at an increased risk of experiencing these consequences.
Understanding this, researchers from Griffith University’s Ethos Project (Extreme Heat and Older Persons) are partnering with older Queenslanders to develop an in-home early warning system for heat. Using small sensors to monitor home temperature and humidity, the Ethos system will alert users when these levels become dangerous and provide personalised cooling recommendations to reduce heat health risk.
CALLING OVER 65’s
If you are over 65 years old, living in Moreton Bay, Ipswich, or Toowoomba and keen to participate, eligibility screening will be based on your health, medication usage and location. If eligible, researchers will install four devices (one outdoor and three indoor) in participants’ homes to measure temperature and humidity. These devices will be connected to a tablet-based application.
Before installation, participants will be asked to complete a confidential health history questionnaire about their health status, current medications and preferences for cooling options.
If you’re a bit concerned about navigating a new technology, don’t worry - the research team will provide continuous support and you’ll have several opportunities to share experiences with fellow participants throughout the trial. Lastly, as with all research, strict data protection regulations and research ethics to safeguard your privacy will be adhered to.
Participants will be requested to keep the system in their homes for a minimum of three months during the summer of 20232024 (December through January) and interact with it as they wish. Researchers
will provide guidance through an initial in-person session, written materials, and telephone support.
The main benefit of participation is that the system provides real-time monitoring of the environment, helping participants recognise potential body temperature elevation and providing guidance on how to cool down to a safe temperature. Additionally, the data collected will enable researchers to better understand temperature and humidity exposure across different households during the summer period. Participants have the right to withdraw from the research at any time if they feel uncomfortable.
The study has received approval from the Griffith University Ethics Committee, and participation is voluntary with no impact
on participants’ relationships with the researchers or Griffith University.
If you are over the age of 65, living in Moreton Bay, Ipswich, or Toowoomba, do not have a diagnosis of a cognitive or psychological disorder (such as dementia or schizophrenia), and are willing to complete a confidential health history questionnaire, register your interest prior to 30 September by emailing ethos@griffith.edu.au or calling the research team on (07) 5552 7903. As our show has grown significantly in the past few years, we are looking for more volunteers to join our team. If you
came and enjoyed the show and would like to be a part of it in the future (even for just 2 hours a year!), please contact dayboroshowentries@gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook.
Thanks again to all who helped make our 2023 amazing and to the Village Pump for helping us get the word out to our community.

MUSIC CONCERTS SET TO RETURN
After a break of nearly four years, a series of bluegrass and acoustic music events are set to make a big return to Samford in 2023. August and December will see major musical productions coming to the Samford Community Centre, commencing with the much acclaimed musical-theatre performance of Ode to the Banjo, on Sunday 13th August at 7:00pm. Ode to the Banjo is a joyous celebration of one of music’s most recognisable and beloved instruments, the banjo. The fast-paced 90 minute program celebrates three of the most popular world music styles - Bluegrass, Appalachian and Celtic music.
Part theatre, part concert, you’ll be transported from the stage of the famed Grand Ole Opry, to a mountain cabin high in the hills of North Carolina, before finally settling into the cosy confines of an old Irish pub. Ode to the Banjo is set in 1949, when a lively musical troupe of entertainers arrive in Australia from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry to perform a series of concerts Down Under. Ode has a unique blend of history, humour and harmony within three distinct music ensembles that will feature the banjo front and centre.
The banjo styles showcased include 3-finger bluegrass picking, Appalachian clawhammer banjo and Irish tenor banjo flat picking. Each style captures the unique expression of these timeless and historic musical forms, giving the audience a joyous front row seat on a delightful musical journey. Other instruments featured include the guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, uilleann pipes, bodhrán drum and double bass, as well as rich vocal harmonies, providing a multi-textured backdrop for the different voices of the banjo.
Bookings are essential - stickytickets. com.au/TTZ8S, the Sticky Tickets website, or scan the QR Code in the ad (right).

PLANT A TREE DAY IS COMING
Samford Landcare and Planet Ark are inviting local residents to dig in and do something good for nature and their community as part of National Tree Day 2023.
“National Tree Day is a great opportunity to maintain and enhance our beautiful environment for our local wildlife as well as ensuring the region continues to be a great place to live and getting all the benefits that come from spending time outdoors,” said David Reed from Samford Landcare.
“Over 26 million trees have been planted by volunteers since 1996 as part of the program and we are excited for the Samford community to support the national goal of getting another million native plants in the ground this year.”
Schools Tree Day (July 28) and National Tree Day (July 30) are Australia’s largest annual tree-planting and nature care events, with plantings taking place on the last weekend of July. Each year, around
300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in activities that encourage greater understanding of the natural world and how we can protect it.
“Our research clearly shows the many benefits that time outdoors in nature has for our physical and mental health, our
children’s development, the liveability of our communities and the robustness of local ecosystems,” said Planet Ark co-CEO Rebecca Gilling.
“With the simple action of planting a tree you can help cool the climate, provide homes for native wildlife and make your local community a happier and healthier place to live.”
Did you know?
Moreton Bay Regional Council offers one free native plant voucher per financial year to property owners of residential properties. The voucher can be redeemed from community nurseries for one of the following options: four tube stock; or two medium sized pots; or one large pot. For Samford and District residents, the closest MBRC community nursery is Kumbartcho Plant Nursery located at 15 Bunya Pine Ct, Eatons Hill.
If you’re getting involved in this annual event, why not send some pics of your tree planting to editor@villagepump.org.au

Bushcare
We had a great roll up for our latest bushcare working bee on Sunday 9 July. For the past few months, we have been focused on planting, watering and weeding our new upper bank planting, so it was time for several of our weeders to sweep through the original rainforest revegetation zone P1.
Given the dry conditions this year, we were very surprised to find such a profusion of emerging nasties in the understorey, including Madeira Vine, Leucaena, Cat’s Claw and Creeping Inch Weed. We only managed to clear about one quarter of the area, so will need to re-double our efforts next month. A second team continued work on the upper bank to ensure our new trees and shrubs don’t get engulfed by weeds. By the end of the session, the Council vehicle was brim full of bags for disposal off-site. At 4pm, our volunteers enjoyed a convivial afternoon tea at the picnic site, kindly provided by the SDPPA.

We encourage everyone to get involved with Planet Ark’s National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July. This year one of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s sites is just across the road from the Eco-Corridor in Samford Parklands just behind the Samford Rangers Football Club (200 metres from the carpark). The Environmental Services team will supervise the planting of native trees and shrubs along the bank of the South Pine River from 9am to 11am, followed by a sausage sizzle. You can register on the MBRC website.

The Samford Eco-Corridor is a project of the SDPPA
We take it for granted that trees are important. Fresh air, cool air, shade, habitat, oxygen, feel for nature, serenity and plenty more are the benefits we get from trees. So it’s a good thing that there is National Tree Day on 30 July to remind us that trees are our friends.
And its why the newly launched Green Street website at www.greenstreet.net.au gives some simple ideas about what we can do to show trees just how friendly we can be to them.
The Green Street Planting Badge invites us to:
• plant at least 10 trees or shrubs per month, or organise others to do so on our behalf.
• plant trees indigenous to our location.
• encourage our workplace to sponsor staff to work for volunteer organisations responsible for tree planting, seed gathering, native plant propagation or regeneration of natural resources.
• plant fruit trees.
• plant bush tucker trees.
• donate to or become members of at least two organisations advocating for improving our forests and natural habitats.
Of course, in Samford we have the famous Eco-Corridor planting at the back of the Parklands tennis courts showing the way and the upcoming Council planting at Rangers football precinct adds yet another planting project to a long list over the years in the Valley.
The Green Street logo puts trees in prime focus as does the Green Street Sustainable
• sell products that meet fair trade and human rights guidelines.
• inform and promote product responsibility guidelines to clients and suppliers.
When applied to trees this means we need to ask key questions of retailers who may be selling paper, stationery, timber products and who may use paper wrapping - does the product come from sustainably managed forests? These pointers are simple startups - there’s more to do if we are to treat trees as humans best friend.
If you have an intreeging story about trees, why not write a piece for the next Village Pump and also post it to your green wall when you join www.greenstreet.net. au. It’s free to join.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED
DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
I receive a lot of enquiries, especially from community and sporting groups, around the types of funding and grants available, what they can be used for and how to apply for them. Well, I am very pleased to advise that help is at hand.
Throughout July and August, Council’s Community Grants & Partnerships Officers will be available in Council libraries to assist prospective applicants who might be preparing a Council funding application, or groups that might be thinking about applying in the future.
Grants officers will be available to meet in person in July and August, or via an online session, however this will only be available during July. Appointments will be for 30 minutes and you will need to book in advance, no walk-ins. During your appointment you will gain an understanding of grant guidelines and budgets, how to choose the right program, gain valuable advice about project planning and importantly, when to submit your application.
I encourage community groups, organisations and emerging or established artists to book a time to have a chat with officers by going to Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au and searching ‘Community Grants Information Sessions’. If you cannot make one of the sessions, you can call Council’s Customer Service on 3205 0555 anytime and ask to speak with a Grants Officer.

MBRC CELEBRATES National Tree Day 2023
RDA SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
Samford RDA will hold its next induction session for new and existing volunteers later this month.
The two-hour session will be held from 2pm on Saturday July 29 at the RDA Centre at Samford Showgrounds. It will introduce people to RDA’s varied volunteer activities and the many personal opportunities that can arise from becoming a volunteer.
Volunteering is a great way to meet others, stay fit and make a real difference to the lives of people with a disability – and at RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) you do not need any riding or horse handling experience. Volunteers can be involved in supporting participants during classes, working with the horses, or carrying out a range of non-horse duties such as helping to maintain the gardens, grounds and gear. All involvement is welcome!
SAMFORD VALLEY
Planet Ark’s National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. It’s a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to the community. While every day can be Tree Day, Planet Ark dedicates the celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day on the last Friday and Sunday in July.
You can join MBRC to celebrate this national day in Samford.
Sunday 30 July
9:00am - 11:00am
Samford Parklands, behind Samford Rangers Football Club.
Come and help plant native trees and shrubs along the bank of the South Pine River. You will also have the opportunity to meet your local Environment Officer and other like-minded locals.
Make sure you wear sunscreen, sun-safe clothing, enclosed footwear, and bring a drink bottle.
You will be provided with tools and equipment for planting and there’ll be a sausage sizzle too.
Parking available in the Samford Rangers Football Club carpark.
See you there!
The minimum age for volunteers is 14 years and all volunteers must wear closed-in shoes (including those attending the induction). Volunteers who participate on class days must be fully vaccinated for Covid 19, however unvaccinated people can attend the centre on non-class days. Lessons are currently run during school terms on Wednesday mornings, Tuesday afternoons and from 8am to 2.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Samford RDA is also seeking local people to join its management committee. The organisation would love to hear from those with an interest in administration, fundraising, bookkeeping and/or management, who are willing and able to contribute to the ongoing growth of the RDA centre and its vital community service. Time commitment is flexible and varies from a few hours a month to several hours a week depending on role and ability to share responsibilities.
For more information or to book your place at an induction session, email volunteer@samfordrda.com.au. To enquire about a committee position, email president@samfordrda.com.au.

FOOD GARDENING TIPS FOR AUGUST
Change of season is on the way and this opens up new opportunities for warmer season crops and narrows the window for cooler season crops to finish before it gets too hot for them. This is always the challenge at the season change, as it can get very hot or there could be frost in low places. Some tactics from my 30 years of growing veg and herbs in the Samford area.
Ideal to plant in August are:
• Purple king climbing beans, squash – Plant in sunny location.
• Kale, basil, lettuce, rocket – Dense planting of lettuce and allow more space for the others.
• Radish, potato – Dense planting of radish and allow plenty of space for potatoes.
• Calendula, viola, pansy, marigold – Beautiful, edible, productive and great for pollinators.
Okay to plant are:
• Zucchini, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes – Sunniest spot in the garden.
• Coriander – Better with a bit of shade.
• Wombok cabbage, silver beet, rainbow chard – plenty of space as they can be large plants.
In our free access Gleanr planting calendar, you will discover an additional 60 vegetable and herb crops that are suitable for planting during the month of August in our local climate. Detailed growing instructions are provided for every crop including tips to deal with pest and diseases, companion planting, crop rotation and beneficial flowers.
Growing food in the month of August is a great time for veg and herbs in our climate. Key tips to consider for August are:
• Clear out older plants from Autumn that have grown well and are turning or have not grown well at all and are past their time. This opens up new planting space. Save seeds from the best old crops so long as you started with non-hybrid seeds.
• Use inter-cropping in your food garden to increase yield and help plants. For example, if growing potatoes, grow climbing beans up a string line down middle of bed, plant basil with your tomatoes and keep trimming tomatoes to create a strong stalk.
• Keep your soil fertility rhythm going, it’s the bedrock of a successful food garden.
• August is often dry and as temperatures warm, watering becomes critical for plants. You may see soil repelling water if it
gets too dry. Helpful tips: loosen soil with a pitchfork to aerate, add crusher dust and powdered clay to help with binding the soil to hold water, and keep focusing on building soil humus (more of a continuous process over the year).
• Sun is moving back from it’s northerly bend in winter to being closer to the east west line. This can open up more planting space if seasonal shade is an issue.
I potentise life processes in the garden using biodynamic methods. These are very efficient and effective with soil fertility, plant health, flavour and nutritive qualities. Deeper observation practices in the garden using biodynamic methods opens the opportunity for a greater understanding of the complex living system of a food garden. You become more “in tune” with nature. Use the QR code to visit (www.gleanr.com.au) and gain free access to:
• Growing information on 140 crops in the Plant wizard localised to our climate.
• Searches in the Plant wizard also make it easy to sort crops based on attributes such as ease of growing, small space, fertility needs, PH, container growing, sun needs and many other categories that help to save you time and customise your crop selection, not only to your climate, but also your food growing area and experience level.
• Tip sheets, videos and images on how to create and manage food gardens in the Toolshed.
• Community platform where you can connect with like-minded food gardeners.
PS: I provide one-on-one food garden coaching in the Samford area, contact me at myfoodgarden.com.au.

GREG’S WAMPI
Greg’s wampi (Murraya crenulata) is a lovely evergreen, shrubby tree that grows to about 6m in cultivation. It was first identified from a specimen collected from the Mon Repos area near Bundaberg by an avid rainforest conservationist, Greg Smyrell, in the 1990’s and was named Clausena smyrelliana after him. In 2019, this species was reclassified.
What is significant is that there is only one known specimen existing in the wild.
It is unknown why other plants have died or why they have not regenerated in their native environment (although the area suffered severe drought conditions for many years during the 1990’s and early 2000’s) particularly as that single specimen produces abundant fruit, the seeds of which germinate readily. This is a critically endangered species and as such should be seriously considered for gardens in SE Qld.
Greg’s wampi is a suitable size for all but small terrace gardens. It’s ovateelliptical leaves, which are a bright, shiny green on the upper surface and dull soft green below, form a dense canopy that maintains a pleasing vista throughout the year. When crushed, the leaves are lemonscented. White, showy flowers in January are followed by panicles of edible fruit that
OUT & ABOUT
are pinkish-white in colour and have a citrus flavour. Fruiting is regularly heavy. Overall, it makes a very attractive specimen plant. This small tree is fast growing. It prefers a rich soil that is well-drained. As a subtropical rainforest species, it benefits from mulching and watering during dry periods. Although it will grow in full sun, better growth is achieved in filtered light. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers whilst birds are drawn to the fruit.
NATIONAL TREE DAY EVENT
We’re celebrating this national day and you’re invited. Come to the nursery between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Sunday 30th July.
In addition to checking out the wonderful range of native plants available at the nursery, there will be bush food condiments for sale, a sausage sizzle (a gold coin donation), bush food sampling and advise on growing bush food, creative craft for youngsters and a plant quiz for children and teens (with a prize of a tube-stock plant for successful completion).

VALE Ron Needham
Samford District Bowls Club Life member
Ron Needham passed away Monday 3rd July at Prince Charles Hospital. Ron was a staunch supporter of the bowls club and a great competitor on the green. Ron won many club competitions during his time at the club, including Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours.
Due to ill health over recent years Ron had to cease bowling but still visited the club from time to time as he had a great love for the club and was keen to know how it was going. Ron was renowned for his ability to sell raffle tickets. You parted with your money whether you wanted to or not - he did not understand: “not today thanks”. Ron will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.
Pennant Play
The Ladies mid-week Pennant team is off to a good start having defeated Northern Suburbs 41-26. The Men’s Pennant teams haven’t been so fortunate in their play. Division 2 Men’s Team was defeated by Ferny Grove 63-48 and Division 5 Men’s Pennant Team was defeated 42- 29. The
Ladies Division 1 team is yet to play their first game for the season.
Club Championship Competition
On Tuesday 11 July, two well-known competitive club players played off in the semi-finals of the Veteran’s Competition. Chris Campbell was victorious, defeating Geoffrey Inder 27-22, with the lead changing during the match.
Some club players had the opportunity to try out a new type of bowing arm at Dayboro a few weeks ago. Great for people who suffer with arthritic hands as there’s no buttons to push or hold, making it much
easier to play with. If you are hesitant to bowl due to arthritis, this arm will give you much assistance and prolong your playing years.
Maintenance Work
There is always maintenance work being carried out at the club to ensure it is presented in the best possible light. Painting inside and outside the club building is underway and should be finished in about 2 to 3 weeks. The front fence will also be painted. It must be 30 years or more since this has been done. The 14 boxes that cover the shade cover motors and the 14 smaller overhead boxes between the greens will also be painted in the same green as the guttering etc.
New artificial turf surrounds will be laid, the pathway down beside the kitchen will be extended, a concrete slab will extend out to near the bitumen driveway and the catering officer’s car park will be moved to the grass area on the other side of the portico.

AUTHOR VISITS
We had a fabulous visit from author Allison Rushby and the kids had a great time creating their own Wish Sister stories. What adventures would you have if your baby sister was magical?
Andy Geppert will be back in the September school holidays sharing his new book and fun craft activities. If you don’t want to miss out on any of these great events, make sure you follow us on Facebook and Instagram or join our mailing list.
We have great authors coming for adults too. South Australian author Kerry Taylor will be joining us on Sunday July 30 to chat about her book “Mr Smith to You”, a fictional work based on real-life jockey, Bill Smith, who lived a life in secret. This should be a great discussion about horse racing, identity and keeping secrets.
Most excitingly we have now secured Bundjalung woman, Shauna Bostock, to
chat about her new family history, “Reaching Through Time”. Shauna knew she had white ancestors, but the discovery that they were slave traders set her off on a path to find out more.
This is an eye-opening account of the Australian frontier from an engaging and generous writer. I am so looking forward to
chatting with Shauna, who brings warmth and wit to her truth telling.
I have just returned from the Australian Booksellers Assoc conference in Adelaide with a box load of advance copies and am so excited about so many of the new titles coming our way before Christmas. New books from Ann Patchett, Melissa Lucashenko, Tony Birch, Benjamin Stevenson, Adam Liaw, Robert Galbraith, Richard Osman, Ann Cleeves, Lucy Treloar, Sally Hepworth, Andy Griffiths, Shelley Burr, Stephen King and so many more. Look out for an avalanche of book reviews to help you build your Birthday/Father’s Day/ Christmas/Just because wish list.

EMPOWERING CHILDREN
Catherine Allen is a teacher with over 20 years experience, with specialist training in ADHD, learning difficulties, parent coaching and teacher training. She’s also a parent and founder of Sprout Learning and Wellbeing.
Catherine is running a Parent Workshop Series on Thursday evenings at Arana Hills Library and Friday mornings in Samford. She shares her experiences below for those who might be interested in attending.
‘Every child experiences struggles with organisation, self-control, and socialisation at some point. There are arguments over room cleaning in almost every home, and there isn’t a 13-year-old on the planet who completes all their homework flawlessly, on time, every single day. However, some children appear to require assistance well beyond their peers who are handling certain tasks independently. This is because they may lack some of the foundational skills that we all need to negotiate the demands of everyday life. These skills are called executive functions. Some children’s executive function problems show up as issues with impulse control, temper
tantrums, and emotional self-regulation. Others may have more obvious issues with time management, remembering instructions, and school organisation.
Teenagers with executive function issues frequently find it difficult to become independent and form long-term plans. Children with ADHD can be up to 30% slower than same age peers in developing some of these skills. The impact of these challenges is not only felt by the child, but also by their parents who play a vital role in navigating their child’s journey.
Parent education sessions serve as an invaluable resource for parents of children who experience these challenges, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and strategies they need to support their child effectively. Equipped with knowledge and strategies, parents become more confident in advocating for their children within the education system and in fostering environments that support their child’s individual needs and personal growth.’
Catherine has launched Sprout Learning and Wellbeing, a local business hosting parent education sessions as well as individual parent coaching opportunities. If you’re a parent, grandparent or caregiver, these sessions will provide valuable insights, practical strategies and support. DIRT CIRCUS LEAGUE Maree Kimberley
Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) 2022 Notable for Older Readers’Dirt Circus League transcends genres with its thrilling blend of action, magical realism and dystopia. Seventeenyear-old Asa, escaping a troubled past, seeking a place to belong, moves to Far North Queensland to live with her negligent father.
Although she finds acceptance with Karen, her father’s neighbour and her mob, Asa needs more. She struggles to settle into the humdrum predictability of small-town life. When the notorious Dirt Circus League roll into town to perform fantastic, brutal fight sequences and to challenge those who dare to beat their best, Asa is drawn into their gang of rebellious outcasts where action and excitement rule.
But the Dirt Circus League isn’t just a group of violent, dissident teens, led by the magnetic Quarter, part man, part bird, they are an obsessive and dangerous cult with a dark history of human sacrifice. As she uncovers the horrendous secrets at the heart of the cult, Asa must choose whether to remain part of the horror or to use her untapped abilities to save herself and heal others caught in the evil web. Trapped yet intrigued, can Asa escape with the help of Karen, after bringing down the League from the inside?
Dirt Circus League is a compelling, fastpaced novel about the powerful allure of danger and the battles we face with our demons in a world beyond our control.
WHAT WE ALL SAW Mike Lucas
In an English village in the 1970s, Gray the bad boy, Sam the narrator, Charlie the wimpy one and Shell the intuitive and blind, unwillingly participate in an unspeakable tragedy at an abandoned quarry. Hags Drop, where witches lure the unwary to an untimely end, and its surrounding wood, are notorious for past witch burnings and the drownings of local children. Here something terrible dragged a bully who dealt Sam a life-threatening blow, to his death. Each of the four friends perceived what caused the bully’s demise differently. Witches can’t be real, can they?
The friends set out to investigate the truth behind the stories to put an end to the fear and suspicion that plagues their small town. What We All Saw is a delightfully creepy horror story for lower to middle secondary readers. The 1970s setting gives the narrative an old-school, childhood adventure feel that affords the characters a level of freedom not felt by most children today.
Interlaced into the story are the themes of the persecution of women, the power of strong family values, the acceptance of the intelligences and talents of those considered disabled, and the chasm between the advantaged and the disadvantaged. Perhaps the most disturbing part of the work is that the disadvantaged are never shown to move beyond their born status, even bad boy Gray.
This suspense-filled story, short-listed for CBCA Book of the Year, will enthral early teen readers who are interested in horror
BY JULIE MARTIN
but are not quite ready for the likes of Stephen King. There may be aspects of the story parents may like to discuss with their early teens. Perhaps it could be a family shared read.
THE FIVE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES OF ANDY AFRIKA Stephen Buoro
In complex Nigeria, where Muslim, Christian and traditional African religions clash, fifteenyear-old Andrew Aziza, aka Andy Africa, hangs with his friends, goes to church, and discusses life’s enormous problems, including The Curse of Africa, with his mentor Zahrah and his brilliant friend Fatima. He falls inappropriately in love with the blonde, white niece of his church’s priest, English Eileen. At the church party held to celebrate her arrival, a stranger claims to be Andy’s father, despite his protective mother’s denials, and an antiChristian protest spirals into violence. Andy is forced to reckon with his identity, his desires and how to live in the so-called Cursed Continent.
In this enthralling tragi-comedic comingof-age novel, Buoro strips contemporary Nigeria bare of any imagined exoticism. Complicated and contradictory, the country becomes a character within the work. Its competing influences drive the cinematic story. Its dramas are melodramatic, exposing both its teen characters and the country’s inner turbulence.
Thank you, Fiona of Baffies Oan for recommending this amazing read.
