HARRY X-RAYS THE GALAXY Samford local Harry Van Der Ark, whom we previously featured for his TEDx event at Hillbrook Anglican High School, has completed his next major milestone. While finishing year 12, Harry undertook the complex and rather daunting USA college application process. This involved having to sit the infamous SAT exams, complete many essays, secure multiple references and the expectation of numerous activities and awards. Trying to do all this whilst studying madly for the ATAR tested Harry’s resolve to study in the United States.

The same week as the ATAR results came out, Harry was very relieved to learn all his effort wasn’t wasted and he was accepted to study Physics at Ivy League institution, Columbia University in New York.

Columbia was founded in 1754 and is one of the top research universities in the world, with over 100 Nobel laureates. Columbia has a long history having produced 4 American presidents including Barack Obama, 10 Supreme Court Justices, 34 Foreign Heads of State and 125 Pulitzer Price recipients.

The year Harry applied, Columbia had the second lowest acceptance rate of any university in the USA of only 3.7%, with only Harvard having a lower acceptance rate.

Harry had long followed his hero Professor Brian Green and was thrilled to be in one of his classes.

Harry’s interest has always been physics.

Reading physics books from a young age, his ambition was to do astrophysics research. Dreams can come true and in his sophomore year he was invited to join the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory under Professor Chuck Haley, where he has been doing high-energy astrophysics research using the Chandra X-ray telescope, and will continue to do so for the remainder of his degree. This also led to a four-month project at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston, where he has led a project collaboration of several universities in North America, Japan and Europe.

Last May Harry finally graduated in a ceremony with his parents in attendance to

cheer him on. It was a wonderful celebration with a lot of tradition and with scenes just like in the movies. He did lose his cap after throwing it vigorously into the air as the tradition requires.

After a brief holiday, Harry was thrilled to be offered a position at Columbia University as a researcher, continuing his work in highenergy physics. He is currently authoring a paper using X-ray data to better understand the center of our galaxy.

Harry’s very happy to be doing at least another year in Manhattan, but he still calls Samford home. His favorite gift package from home is gingerbread men from the famous Samford Patisserie.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, I hope you are making the most of the glorious Winter days we are experiencing – it’s hard to believe the start of Spring is only a few weeks away! The lovely weather has brought lots of visitors to our area, which of course means even more pedestrian and road traffic, especially in Samford Village. So it’s welcome news to hear that the Queensland Department of Traffic and Main Roads (TMR) is finally reducing the speed limit in Main Street from 50 kph to 40 kph to help improve traffic flow and safety.

Speaking of community improvement initiatives, I’d like to thank all those people who attended our ‘Future Making, not Future Waiting’ evening workshop on Wednesday 29 July. It was great to see the willingness of people to contribute their thoughts and ideas.

SAMFORD PROGRESS UPDATES Samford Village Green This project in the Samford Parklands is completed, with the formal opening by Council on Saturday 22 August. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Samford Community Hub The temporary work compound used by the Village Green construction contractor has recently been asphalted and will be converted into an overflow carpark adjacent to the SCHub. Grants Samford Progress is hoping to make some small grants available later this year for local not-for-profit groups, to help towards the costs of projects or activities that align with the objectives of Samford Progress.

Gentle reminder This time of year, the smoke haze from fires (including residential fireplaces and wood heaters) can often persist for long periods around the valley. This is largely due to the cooler, denser air being trapped at ground level by the blanketing effect of the warmer inversion layer above it.

Smoke levels are made much worse by the burning of green garden waste which hasn’t adequately dried out. In addition to excessive smoke, burning moisture-laden green waste can also cause strong noxious type odours. Please don’t burn fresh or wet green waste; it is not only unnecessary, it’s inconsiderate to others. There are several convenient ways to manage fresh garden waste, including re-use such as mulch or compost, or disposal at our free local transfer station, or by using green bins.

LOCAL NEWS HISTORIC COTTAGE MOVES ON You may have noticed a vacant space now at No. 4 Main Street Samford, where the little house owned by Samford Lakes Rural Accommodation sat for many years.

For many, this house is known as Mary Ring Cottage and was recently lifted and relocated by Mary Ring’s grandson, not too far from where it all began. We thought it would be interesting to uncover some of the house’s history.

Lee, nee Condie, and her husband, Peter Neilson are descendance of Anders Peter and Emma Christina Neilson, original settlers from Sweden.

“The part of the farm where the house was located had been sold by Anders Peter Neilsen to Thomas Ireland, who then sold

it to Frederick T H Bell. Frederick Neilson, second son of Anders Peter and Emma Neilsen, bought it back in May 1928, restoring the farm to its original area.” “(The cottage) was my father’s first home when he was born in April 1931, the first child of Larry Condie and Sybil (nee Neilson)”, said Lee. “At the time, the house was located on the Neilson’s farm, but was later moved down into Samford Village.”

THREATENED SPECIES IN FLOWER This month a Gympie Nut (Macadamia ternifolia) fl o w e r e d in rainforest zone P2 beside the Ecotrail. This species is listed nationally as Vulnerable and is one of City of Moreton Bay’s priority species for conservation.

The pendulous clusters of white or pinkish flowers attract a wide variety of beneficial insects, including stingless bees.

Unlike the better-known cultivated macadamias (M. integrifolia and M. tetraphylla) the nut is inedible/poisonous (it contains cyanide, but you would have to eat several kilos of nuts to do any damage).

Macadamias are host plants for several species of blue butterflies.

Council-assisted afternoon bushcare session on Sunday 9 August, most volunteers worked in the riverbank planting P4, which hadn’t been weeded for a couple of months.

We welcomed new volunteers Patrick, Kathy and Neil who undertook a site induction with Council Environmental Officer Debbie McQuattie before beginning work.

We bagged any Madeira Vine and seeding

about 869 Eaton’s Crossing Road, inside the boundary fence between Neilson’s and Morrison’s farms. So, who built the house and when? Possibly between April, 1895 and May, 1928.”

Lee’s father, Noel Condie told her that the house was moved because a fierce storm had blown it off its stumps and the stumps had actually pierced the floor in places.

Records say a destructive storm/cyclone impacted Samford and Mt Nebo areas on 19 February, 1935.

Narelle Saulys [nee Lawson] says “My grandfather Alex Lawson bought the house from where it had been blown off its stumps and relocated it to the Main Street site. His son Reg inherited it in 1947, and Mrs Ring purchased the house in 1951.”

Thanks to Eileen, Bill, Narelle and Lee who assisted to bring this history together. weeds for removal, but other weeds were dropped in situ as mulch.

Some Creeping Inch Weed was left in large piles to break down or dry out. Lesley worked in rainforest zone P2 where vine weeds are starting to appear as a result of the May/June wet spell.

A couple of volunteers watered the young grasses we planted at the top of hillside planting P3 last month (conditions over the past few weeks have gone from wet to very dry, just like a tap being turned off).

Watering was a slow process involving wheelbarrow runs back and forth to fill up water containers at the tennis centre.

Afterwards, our volunteers enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea kindly provided by Joy and Bill on behalf of Samford Progress.

We thank everyone who came along.

LOCAL NEWS ECHIDNA DETECTIVES WORKSHOP An hour before Eco-Corridor bushcare on Sunday 9 August, City of Moreton Bay Council organised a workshop on echidnas for Land for Wildlife members presented by Dr Kate Dutton-Regester from UQ Gatton and WPSQ. Kate carried out her PhD on echidna reproduction using a captive population of Short-beaked Echidnas.

Breeding can take place breed from anytime from May to September.

Before mating, the female is followed by 2 to 12 males (an ‘Echidna train’) waiting for the short period when she is receptive (just a few hours). The gestation period is 16 to 18 days, after which the female lays an egg the size of 5 cent piece and uses her beak to move egg to the pouch.

Interestingly, an echidna’s pouch is temporary, only developing during pregnancy. Once the young echidna leaves, the pouch soon disappears. The female can’t rest while being pursued by the males and does not feed during incubation, gradually losing fat (measured in the study using MRI), so she can only breed only once every 2 to 6 years.

The Short-beaked Echidna is Australia’s most widely distributed mammal and is widely assumed to be common, but we don’t have the evidence (there are fewer than 10 official records per LGA over the past few years and most of these observations were in urban areas).

Anecdotally people are saying that they are seeing fewer live Echidnas yet finding more dead on roads. WPSQ already had a program called Echidna Watch for reporting sightings and Kate got a grant from the Qld Government for a citizen science project called Echidna Detectives where volunteers

look for signs such as scats, diggings, tracks and damage to termite nests. The curved scat with blunts ends measures 5-7 cm (about the size of a cocktail Frankfurt) and sparkles under torchlight because it contains insect exoskeletons. Volunteers use a leaf of stick to collect scats in a Ziplock bag, with a record of the date, location and time. The diggings and tracks are bit trickier to identify because they can be wide and shallow, or deep, but differ from the triangular cone shapes of bandicoot diggings.

Hindlegs The hindlegs of echidnas point backwards, so their claw marks can be seen in their tracks. Kate’s team is also using camera traps, thermal imagery (including drones) and detection dogs to find echidnas, and is monitoring their movements using radio-tracking.

Echidnas have a low body temperature for a mammal (35 degrees) and they love cool conditions, so they are mostly active at night in Queensland (whereas in Tasmania they are active by day and have more body

fur). In hot weather, they may go into torpor for a few days or even hibernate under logs for many weeks. Most people think echidnas eat only ants and termites, but they will take other invertebrates, including earthworms, and even been recorded eating turtle eggs. The lifespan is about 20 years in the wild and up to 50 years in captivity.

They are usually solitary and are not territorial. The main threats are habitat loss, roads and feral animals. Some local echidnas seem to be losing body hair, but the cause has not yet been determined.

The photo of an echidna at the EcoCorridor was a stuffed and mounted specimen (did you realise?), but we hope to record a live animal one day. To encourage echidnas in your yard, leave some fallen logs to rot down.

If you see an Echidna, take a photo and report it on the free iNaturalist app and the data will flow through to Kate’s team.

BARN OWL BOXES

the rodent population down as they hunt for rodents in grasslands and acreage around Samford.

They also feed on small mammals and birds as well as insects, frogs and lizards.

While Barn Owls are common, they are quite hard to see, as they are nocturnal. Nest boxes are artificial forms of tree hollows and provide shelter for these beautiful creatures in areas where where trees have been cleared.

At the recent Samford Show, the Men’s Shed had their usual stall with a good selection of their wares. This year they also had a Barn Owl box on display. Five orders were taken and five boxes were built on commission. The boxes have now all been delivered.

Eastern Barn Owls are a medium-sized owl with a beautiful heart-shaped facial disc and an orange, grey and cream body.

These owls are native to Samford and act as excellent natural pest control, performing a huge service to the community by keeping Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 21 AUGUST 2026

LOCAL NEWS MAKING ART AS A WAY TO LISTEN AND LEARN Dr Karike Ashworth, a Samford local of ten years, has recently taken her art practice to the Western Downs with a fibrebased project called Reparative Threads.

This community-based initiative, funded

by Regional Arts Australia, explores care, connection and repair.

“The residency took place in June and July this year and was hosted by Lapunyah Art Gallery in Chinchilla. Over several weeks I worked alongside six local women, exploring the Western Downs through walking, collecting, natural dyeing, spinning cotton litter gathered from the roadside and making new artworks inspired by the stories, landscapes and history of the region,” she explains.

While the onsite workshops have now finished, the project continues through a series of online mentoring sessions and will culminate in three exhibitions across the region over the next three years.

Exhibitions These exhibitions will feature works by the participants and Karike alongside artworks from the local community and the Western Downs Regional Council collection.

Karike is interested in how making things by hand helps us pay closer attention to the places we live.

“Spending time walking, collecting plants, dyeing, spinning and stitching opens up conversations about landscape, history and community that might not have happened otherwise,” she says.

For her, making is as much about listening and learning as it is about producing an artwork. “In this project, textiles became a way of bringing people together. The slow rhythm of spinning, dyeing and stitching created space for conversation, shared knowledge and new ways of seeing the Western Downs.”

“I was particularly interested in the history and legacy of the cotton industry in the region and in exploring it through cotton litter gathered from the roadside.

Chinchilla also has a long history of spinning and weaving, and it was a privilege to build on that legacy by working alongside local women with a wealth of knowledge and experience.”

“Throughout the project, we recognised that the Western Downs is shaped by many overlapping histories, First Nations, pastoral, agricultural and contemporary community life. These stories coexist within the landscape and rather than privileging one over another, the project sought to create space for them to be acknowledged together through making, conversation and shared experience,” she says.

Much of Karike’s work explores everyday, often overlooked, materials and expanded textile practice as a way of thinking about care, labour and place. The

Chinchilla project builds on earlier works using paper, paper towel, found textiles, rusty objects and hand stitching and builds on previous community-oriented projects exploring place and women’s stories.

One example is Domestic Topography, an artist residency supported by Mackay Regional Council, where she worked with local women in 2025 to explore experiences of safety and unsafety in the home in the context of domestic and family violence.

Projects like this have reinforced for her the importance of building trust over time.

“I am drawn to textiles because they’re familiar and accessible. Almost everyone has some connection to sewing, mending or fabric through family or everyday life.

Textile processes are also wonderfully slow.

They encourage conversation, reflection and patience, making them an ideal way to explore ideas about place, memory and community,” she says.

ART WITH ALTITUDE RETURNS TO MOUNT GLORIOUS One of Moreton Bay’s most cherished community arts events returns this spring with Art With Altitude bringing together local artists, makers and visitors for a vibrant weekend of creativity at the Mount Glorious Community Hall on Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 October.

Celebrating the remarkable artistic talent of the Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo communities, this year’s exhibition will showcase an inspiring collection of original paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fibre art, glasswork, drawings and more.

LOCAL NEWS A SHOP FOR ALL SEASONS Four Seasons Organics has been part of the Samford Village community since 1996, that’s nearly 30 years. It’s a milestone this family business are incredibly proud of.

“We simply couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of our local community.

Originally owned by Wendy and Murray Bailye, the business passed into the hands of Ania and Eugene in 2000, and they have been at the helm ever since.

Ania and Eugene had just moved to Australia from South Africa when Ania, who has always been passionate about healthy living,wholefoods and organic food, decided to take a drive out to one of the few organic shops around Brisbane at the time.

In 1999, she wandered into Four Seasons by chance and immediately loved both the shop and Samford itself. After chatting with a staff member and asking a few questions, she discovered the business was for sale.

One thing led to another and by 2000 Four Seasons was theirs.

Buying an organic grocer in Samford had never been part of the plan, it was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Looking back, they feel as though it was meant to be.

Over the years the shop has evolved alongside the community, while staying true to what it has always been about - good organic food, wholesome products, health and wellbeing and promoting a healthier planet, with a genuine connection to the people who walk through the doors. Canter & Colt, the organic café, is a big part of that evolution.

“As a family, we’ve watched other

families grow up, welcomed generations of the same families through our doors and built friendships with customers who have supported us for decades,” says Carina.

JOEY SCOUT GARNERS TOP AWARD The highest honour in the Joey Scout Section has

been awarded to Samford Scout Group’s Xander Albrecht, who received his Joey Scout Challenge Award after three years in the section.

Xander’s Scouting journey began three years ago at Samford, where he quickly threw himself into the program’s mix of outdoor adventure and hands-on projects.

Over his time as a Joey he attended several camps, trying his hand at archery, bushwalking, bushcraft and camping and even paddling the Noosa River and abseiling, activities that gave him a taste of the bigger adventures waiting for him as he moves up through Scouting.

Araucaria Track For his Adventurous Journey, a core requirement of the Challenge Award, Xander tackled the Araucaria Track at Enoggera Reservoir, putting his outdoor skills to the test on the walk.

Among his Special Interest Area projects, Xander’s favourite was Creating a Better World, which saw him head out to Green Thumb Farm to help with weeding and harvesting, a project that let him combine his love of the outdoors with a bit of community-minded hard work.

The Joey Scout Challenge Award is the

peak achievement available in the Joey Scout Section, recognising members who complete the full Achievement Pathway including participation, leadership and reflection across a range of activities.

It’s not expected that every Joey Scout will attempt the award, and Xander’s completion of it marks a proud milestone for both him and the Samford Scout Group.

Joey Scouts is open to children aged five to eight, with Samford Scout Group meeting weekly on Thursdays from 5.15 to 6.15pm during school terms.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Samford Support Network (SSN) is a small team of volunteers who work together to support clients from the Samford community. Volunteers provide transport for medical drives, personal drives, Wednesday fortnightly shopping, fortnightly Friday social outings and gardening and handyman tasks.

SSN is not a registered aged-care provider.

To use their services, you need to become a client. The client coordinator will come and meet with you to ensure SSN can support your needs. Unfortunately, they are unable to drive people who use wheelchairs.

All clients must be approved by the SSN management committee.

Clients must reside in the following suburbs within the 4520-postcode area, Samford Village, Samford Valley, Wights Mountain, Camp Mountain, Highvale, Closeburn, Cedar Creek, Yugar or Draper.

Unfortunately, SSN does not have the capacity to extend their services to include

all the 4520 postcodes.

Clients do pay for transport, but fees are subsidised by the SSN through the generosity of our community. SSN does not receive government funding. It is supported by the community through the generosity of local businesses, other community groups and individuals.

What do volunteers do?

Once approved by the management committee, volunteers decide what areas they are interested in helping with. They can choose between assisting on general drives, which would be local medical or personal appointments, drives to medical appointments in the city, hospitals and or specialist centres.

SSN are finding more volunteers are needed to drive clients to hospital appointments in the city. During Wednesday shopping excursions, volunteers drive clients to and from Samford and Brookside shopping centres and join them for morning tea and help with shopping.

Help is also needed for Friday fortnightly social gatherings. Volunteers drive clients to and from local and outside places for morning tea and or lunch and join in with the clients to enjoy each other’s company.

This is one group that has grown significantly as SSN has many clients who need social engagement. SSN also arranges guest speakers for such outings. There is also gardening and handyman group.

SSN is in need of more volunteers as their client base is growing. Please note that volunteering needn’t be a huge commitment. The group is very grateful for whatever help they can get. Volunteers are required to undergo a police check, have insurance and can claim for fuel. If you would like to help or for more information, call 0470 214 916.

AROUND THE VILLAGE SAMFORD RANGERS ACADEMY CONTINUES TO SET BENCHMARK The winter school holidays delivered another outstanding chapter in the growth of Samford Rangers Football Club, with our Academy teams producing exceptional performances across Football Queensland’s WinterFest, Junior Cup and State Tournaments.

Competing against many of Queensland’s strongest football clubs, Samford Rangers once again proved that a community club can deliver an elite player development environment. Across every tournament, our teams played with confidence, composure and determination, reinforcing the Academy’s reputation as one of the region’s premier development programs.

Under 11 Boys Leading the celebrations were our Under 11 Boys Academy, who claimed the WinterFest Silver Cup Championship after an outstanding campaign. What makes this achievement even more special is that the squad featured players from across our Academy program, demonstrating the depth of talent being developed at Samford Rangers and the success of our commitment to giving every player opportunity to grow.

These tournaments are about far more than trophies. Football Queensland uses WinterFest, Junior Cup and the State

Tournaments as key talent identification events, with selectors identifying players for future emerging talent programs and representative pathways.

We’re incredibly proud that multiple Samford Rangers players were identified, including three goalkeepers who have developed through both our academy and the AGK Goalkeeping Academy, based right here at Samford Rangers. It’s another strong endorsement of the quality coaching and player development available within our club.

AROUND THE VILLAGE FATHER’S DAY SPOTLIGHT This Father’s Day we’re celebrating two men who show up for our kids every single day, on the oval, in the classroom and everywhere in between.

Meet Shaun Reynoldson, a grade 3 teacher and dad of two children aged three and six years old. Ask any student and they will tell you that Shaun isn’t just a teacher, he’s a cool teacher. This cool teacher says being a dad has impacted how he turns up in the classroom.

A former firefighter, Gus says stepping into school life as a dad made him more protective of every child on our grounds.

“You just see life differently once you become a parent, it’s hard to not be protective.”

When asked about his biggest dad win, he calls it a tie. “I once taught myself to braid my daughter’s hair and managed to send her off to a birthday party with a crown rope braid.”

The other win was taking his children to Euro Disney, both as youngsters and again more recently. “It was special seeing them interact as friends and not just siblings.”

Gus would like to show others that it’s easier to be cheerful and a simple high five can change someone’s day.

Both agree on what kids need most from the men around them, and that is consistency, security and someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with them.

We couldn’t agree more and are so lucky to have Shaun and Gus on the team.

From everyone here at Samford State School, Happy Father’s Day to all the father figures in our kids’ lives, whatever that looks like for your family.

“When a kid is having a rough day, I think about how I’d want someone to respond if that was one of my own kids,” he says.

His proudest dad win? His kids think he can fix anything.

“I’m going to enjoy that reputation until they’re old enough to realise most of my repairs involve YouTube and an unnecessary trip to Bunnings.”

Shaun said that if his students take anything from him, he hopes it is that you can work hard and take things seriously, without taking yourself too seriously. Being kind, having a laugh and still holding high standards is the magic balance.

Meet Gus Swain, groundsman and dad of four (aged 11, 13, 15 and 17). Gus brings a smile to everything he does around our school grounds, and it might be because he sees his own children in many of the students at Samford State School. A student’s bike with tassels once stopped him in his tracks. “I remembered my own daughter’s bike at that age. She is 17 now.”

AROUND THE VILLAGE COMMUNITY TURNS OUT FOR CLOSEBURN BRIGADE’S BIG DAY The weather gods were clearly on the side of the Closeburn Rural Fire Brigade with the showers holding off just long enough for more than 400 people to enjoy the brigade’s recent community barbeque and information day.

Residents young and old came along for a relaxed day of food, fun and fire trucks.

Rural Fire Brigade and Queensland Fire and Rescue appliances were on display, with friendly firefighters only too happy to answer questions, demonstrate equipment and explain what all those interestinglooking switches, hoses and gadgets do.

No community barbeque would be complete without a sausage sizzle, and the brigade’s cooks rose to the occasion.

Hundreds of free snags were cooked to perfection, or at least with enough onions and sauce that nobody complained. Plenty of free cold drinks were also available to wash them down.

Younger visitors enjoyed dressing up as firefighters and having their faces painted.

The brigade’s old mate Bushy also dropped in, delighting children and adults alike and posing for plenty of photographs.

Bushfire season A free prize draw added to the excitement, with generous prizes donated

by Community Bank Samford, Samford Hotel, Drakes Supermarket Samford and Brookies Rural Traders Samford.

While there were plenty of smiles, the day also carried an important message about preparing for the approaching bushfire season.

“Today is all about engaging with our community,” First Officer Don Schouten said. “We’re heading into our bushfire season, so now is the time to talk to everyone about having a bushfire plan in place and making sure properties are properly prepared. We’ve had a heap of requests from landholders for home advice visits, which is really great to see.”

The strong attendance was a wonder ful demonstration of the community’s support for its volunteer firefighters, and of the brigade’s commitment to helping keep Closeburn and surrounding areas safe.

Congratulations to the prize winners: Nick Hemers, who won the smoke alarm system donated by Community Bank Samford; Christie Patten, winner of the $100 Samford Hotel voucher; Tammy Spanknebel, Laurie Bingham, Paul Elkins and Paul Hender, who each received a $50 Drakes Supermarket Samford voucher; and Karen Tonkin, winner of the $50 Brookies Rural Traders Samford voucher.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Museum THE SAMFORD HOTEL On Main Street in the heart of Samford, the Samford Hotel stands as more than a place to meet for a meal or a drink. It is one of the suburb’s enduring landmarks, with a story stretching back to the early 1900s.

The area’s first hotel was built on Dayboro Road in 1906, serving locals, travellers and workers in a rural district that was still finding its shape. After fire damaged the building, it was rebuilt and became known by several names, including the Samford Hotel, Railway Hotel and O’Hara’s Hotel.

Its next chapter began in 1918, when proprietor James O’Hara moved the hotel to Main Street after the railway opened and new businesses began clustering around the station. The building was shifted in three sections, placing the hotel where it could become part of the village’s daily rhythm.

As Samford grew, so did the hotel’s importance. Farmers, traders and business owners stopped there after long days on the road, while families gathered for celebrations. By the late 1930s, electricity

had arrived in the valley, helping local farms increase production and adding momentum to the town’s economy.

Expansions in the 1950s altered its look and feel, and over the decades it operated under different names, including the Golden Valley Hotel. Later licensees, such as John Foxlee and the Pullos family, added their own imprint. The Pullos family, who ran the venue from 2003 to 2018, helped refresh it.

In 2019, the Comiskey Group took ownership, bringing fresh plans while recognising the hotel’s long-standing place in local life. Today, the Samford Hotel remains a popular gathering spot for

residents and visitors alike, offering the easy warmth that has long defined the district.

More than a pub, it is a living reminder of Samford’s evolution from rural settlement to thriving village. Its walls carry stories of railway days, local characters, family milestones and changing times, making it a familiar landmark with deep roots in the community.

A BUZZING AUGUST AT SAMFORD PLAYGROUP It’s certainly been a buzz at Samford Community Playgroup this August, with special visitors, celebrations and plenty of hands-on learning filling our mornings together.

On August 4, we celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, creating opportunities for our children to connect with and celebrate Australia through a range of thoughtfully planned activities. We were particularly inspired by the beautiful yellow blooms of wattle that have been flowering throughout Samford.

Using different shades of yellow paint and a variety of brushes, the children created their own wattle-inspired artworks. As always, it was wonderful to see each child’s unique interpretation emerge through this openended experience.

We were also delighted to welcome back Miss Yoga from Mindful Movers Kids Yoga.

This time, the children were taken on an imaginative yoga adventure to the beach!

There was plenty of surfing, stretching, balancing and movement as the children explored different yoga poses through storytelling and play. These sessions continue to be a much-loved part of our program, providing a fun and engaging introduction to movement, mindfulness and relaxation.

Later that week, we welcomed Amy from Envirocom for a very special worm farm presentation. Amy taught the children about worms, what they like to eat and how we can care for them. There was plenty of excitement when the children had the opportunity to get up close and even hold some of our wriggly visitors.

We are incredibly grateful to Envirocom for kindly donating a worm farm to Samford Playgroup, which will allow the children to continue learning about composting, sustainability and caring for our environment.

We carried our newfound love of creepy crawlies into Minibeast Week, with our playgroup transformed into a world of bugs!

The children explored big sensory-play experiences, bug-themed playdough and plenty of opportunities to discover, create and investigate.

August is also National Breastfeeding Month, and on Wednesday we welcomed

Janna from All Heart Lactation. Janna is an experienced midwife and lactation consultant who generously spent the morning chatting with our playgroup mums, sharing feeding tips and offering valuable, supportive advice. We are so thankful to have knowledgeable local professionals like Janna willing to share their time with our community.What a wonderful month of learning, connection and community, and we still have more August fun to come.

Samford Bowls Club COMPETITIONS The majority of intra-club competitions have now been completed, including all finals. Congratulations to the following team members: Vaughan Jameson, Mike Ormiston and Jeff Himstedt (triples), Vaughan Jameson (B singles) and Barry and Lesley Maher (mixed pairs). Congratulations to all team members who participated.

QCWA Samford BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Queensland Country Women’s Association celebrated its 104th birthday on 11 August 2026, that is 104 years of service, friendship and community spirit.

Our Samford CWA branch celebrated the event by holding a Scones with a Twist morning tea held on Thursday 6 August at our CWA Hall. Guests enjoyed watching the demonstrations by some CWA members who were making gem scones, damper and gluten-free vegetable muffins. Country Kitchens Facilitator Jill also demonstrated how to make pumpkin, date and wholemeal scones, a tasty version of a healthy scone.

The simple scone recipe can be made healthier by increasing fibre and fruit and vegetables. Please see the recipe below. The scones were eagerly sampled with a cuppa and were well reviewed. It was an enjoyable morning for all.

Gail, our Activities Officer arranged a CWA ladies day to Mt Tamborine at the end of last month. The ladies experienced

a Glow Worm Cave tour, visited Butterfly Valley, enjoyed delicious food for lunch, fed some alpacas and came across a beautiful wedding on the mountain. Everyone had a delightful encounter in the cool surroundings of Mt Tamborine. Thank you, Gail, for organizing the special day out.

Ingredients: 1 egg 2 tablespoons butter, softened ¼ cup sugar 1 cup cooked mashed pumpkin, cooled ¾ cup milk (or slightly more) 2 cups wholemeal self-raising flour 2 cups self-raising flour 1 cup pitted dates, chopped Method: PREHEAT oven to 200°C. BEAT the egg, butter, sugar, pumpkin and milk together.

ADD the flours and dates.

STIR with a knife or spatula until just combined. It makes a soft, moist, sticky dough.

PLACE on a well-floured surface and gently pat the dough out to a thickness of 20mm to 25mm.

CUT with a scone cutter and place on a tray lined with baking paper.

BAKE in a preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes.

Remove from the tray and cool on a rack.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Rural Fire Brigade JOEY SCOUT JAUNT More than 450 Joey Scouts, leaders and parents gathered in Baden Powell Park on 1 August to enjoy a full day of scouting activities for the 2026 Joey Scout Jaunt.

Scouts Qld Chief Commissioner Geoff Doo was on hand to participate with the young Joeys. Commissioner Doo also stopped off to say hi to our brigade members in attendance.

AROUND THE VILLAGE Samford Golden Valley Pony Club SANDEN OVATION FOR CLINTON EA coach Clinton van der Sanden visited Samford Golden Valley Pony Club recently to put riders through their paces in a show jump clinic.

Nineteen riders of all ages and stages from poles on the ground to 1m participated.

Exercises varied but one theme was achieving adjustability in the canter.

Child rider Evelyn said the day helped her to feel more confident in her showjumping.

Adult riding member Ruth enjoyed the focus on harmony between horse and rider.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES CLASSIC CARS FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Riley Car Club is preparing for the cLassic car show which is planned for Sunday 4 October at the Samford Showgrounds Grounds. Following a very successful show last year, the club is expecting a mix of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, with more than 200 entrants.

The cost of entry is $5 for vehicle and all occupants. All profits will go to Riding for the Disabled (Samford).

Please consider being part of this event which will show interesting vehicles of a past era while providing much needed funds for Samford RDA. The Riley Car Club welcomes anyone interested in Classic vehicles for a coffee every Tuesday at 10am at the club house adjacent to the Samford Men’s shed at Showgrounds Drive.

LOOKING TO REHOME YOUR PUZZLES? B i n d e r s Ke e p e r s recently attended Bunnings Keperra Ekka Morning Markets, a two-hour event. What a fabulous day. Huge numbers lined up for face painting, animal petting and fun games. Another of the highlights was Puppetrix (pictured), a children’s entertainment provider that specialises in puppet shows and literary-based workshops for kids.

BindersKeepers arrived with suitcases full of jigsaw puzzles, which proved hugely popular, especially with buyers aware all puzzles had been checked and guaranteed complete.

Now to restock on puzzles, especially those suited to children before the next two-day sale in January 2027 at the Samford Scout Den (dates yet to be confirmed).

The recent AGM was well attended with all positions filled except for volunteer coordinator, which is a minor role at this stage. October 30 marks the six-year anniversary since all the non-fiction books were packed up after BindersKeepers (known as Community Library Samford at the time) exited the old Rangers Clubhouse, prior to the building being demolished.

BindersKeepers did not attend Pages in the Park due to prior commitments, but if it goes ahead next year we will be there.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES YOU’RE INVITED Samford Patchworkers will be holding their biennial Quilt Show on the weekend of 12 and 13 September at the Samford Community Hall, 41 School Road, Samford, from 9am and 4pm each day.

There will be the usual array of beautiful quilts to admire and the famous morning and afternoon teas to savour.

In addition to the 80-plus quilts on display, this year’s show will feature a display around the theme of Reimagine and Repurpose, giving new life to textiles old and new.

The show will feature a special display of magnificent works and demonstration by textile artist and member Helen Duncan.

We have also secured the services of a scissor sharpener, retail patchwork shops and Joanne Holmes with her Mosaics to operate on both days.

The popular sales table will be stacked with a multitude of handmade articles (including quilts) just waiting for you to purchase them. Your Christmas shopping could all be done in one go. We will also have a considerable amount of de-stash fabric and items available.

As expected, the group have also created three beautiful quilts for the raffle, with the winner getting first choice.

This group is well known for its sizeable donations to charities, both local and national. These charities do enormous good in the community.

The local Samford Men’s Shed are joining

us again to operate a lunch bar and BBQ. The hall is wheelchair accessible, there is good parking and buses are welcome.

The group looks forward to seeing you at the show.

SPIRITUAL FAIR A fundraiser for Spiritual Rendezvous, a local spiritual church, will take place at the Community Hall on Saturday 10 October from 9am to 4pm.

The fair will feature readers of tarot cards, oracle cards and angel cards, as well as psychics and others. Readings need to be booked, so come early. Healers will also be in attendance. Crystals, jewellery, wind chimes, sun catchers, crystal lamps and heaps more will be available to purchase.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES SPRING FLING HOEDOWN COMING SOON It’s less than a month until Samford’s Spring Fling Hoedown on Saturday September 12, and tickets are still available.

This old-style bush dance is a major fundraiser to support Samford RDA’s (Riding for the Disabled) participants, programs and horses.

It will be held under cover at the Jenny O’Malley Arena at Samford Showgrounds from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

Beefa’s Bush Band will set the tempo for the evening with a mix of traditional bush dance music and popular bushed up songs, plus a dance caller to help everyone on the dance floor have a great time. There will also be soft play for children and a host of games and activities for everyone.

Guests on the night can bring grazing platters, and the Golden Valley Keperra Lions will offer a BBQ. A cash bar will sell wine, beer and soft drinks, however no BYO drinks are permitted.

TGIF Our August Thank Goodness It’s Friday is coming up and we’d love to see you there supporting our community hall.

The latest city-wide survey found nearly seven in 10 residents say feeling safe is one of the most important aspects of where they live, while road safety, disaster preparedness and access to parks and natural areas also remain key priorities.

Further, road safety, including for those walking or riding bikes, remained a high priority with 82% of community members rating it extremely or very important, up from 80% in 2025.

Council’s 2026/2027 Budget is investing $37 million to public safety and disaster management, including $2.57 million to expand Council’s CCTV surveillance program.

It has also committed $56.86 million to road rehabilitation and resurfacing, $12.9 million for road safety and transport

infrastructure minor improvements program and continues to fund essential services that often happen behind the scenes, including stormwater maintenance, disaster preparedness, environmental protection and long-term planning.

Since launching in 2021, Moreton Says has collected more than 32,500 responses, providing valuable insights that help guide Council’s planning, service delivery and investment decisions.

The latest survey is now open with residents, workers, investors and visitors encouraged to complete it online for the chance to receive 1 of 20 $100 Moreton Money gift cards.

PINK TONGUE Ground cover plants are significant in both the garden and the wild. While providing an attractive backdrop, they have many features that protect and or support the underlying soil and surrounding shrubs and trees.

The soil stays at a more even temperature than that exposed to the air and so prevents plant stress from soil temperatures that are too high or low.

Evaporation Similarly soil water levels are maintained as the plants limit evaporation. Meanwhile small animals, insects, lizards and frogs have a protected habitat in which to live.

Pink tongue (Rostellularia obtusa) is an evergreen ground cover, native to areas of damp, eucalypt woodland between Grafton in NSW and MacKay in Queensland.

The pink/purple flowers are borne on spikes. Although flowering may occur throughout the year, the most spectacular displays are in summer and autumn.

In cultivation, pink tongue grows best in full sun or part shade. An area with slow draining loam or clay soil and high-water level is ideal. It forms a lovely display when grown in a pot and placed under a slow dripping tap.
