Sinead believes that the series has made people more aware of what it’s like to have a disability and try to find a job. “It’s so much harder to even be invited for a job interview. Being in the Employable Me series was a huge opportunity for me to show that everyone has different qualities and strengths, disability or not,” she said. Asked what she liked most about her job, Sinead said, “I like helping other people. That is why I had the idea to work in Aged Care already since High School. I find it most rewarding when I am able to make the residents happy and can help to make their lives a little bit easier. I find it very rewarding to get to know each resident and know what their needs are and how they like something done. It makes me happy when they are happy.”

We are thrilled to report that Brodie and her road race team won Gold AND Bronze!
What you may not realise is that, unlike other team sports like rowing, netball, etc, only the team rider who cycles across the line first gets a medal. In this team it was Georgia Baker, but we now know that this is a team sport, with an enormous team effort by all riders to secure these medals.
Like many young women her age, 21-yr-old Samford Valley local, Sinead Skorka-Brennan dreamed of finding the perfect job. One that would build her confidence but also give her independence and job satisfaction. In a world where preconceptions about disability are still an issue, she was finding employment opportunities really difficult to come by. You see, Sinead is a young woman with Down Syndrome and because of this, she is often treated like a child, instead of a young Ironically, adult.Sinead is an accomplished gymnast, having represented Australia at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March this year, bringing home four medals, two of them gold in bar and beam events. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Dickson Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. You would think these achievements alone would open doors for her – but unfortunately not.
Pictured: Brodie in action in the green and gold.
“The months of planning, communication, trust and commitment topped off with near perfect execution was what lead us to the podium on the day,” said Brodie. Did you know road race cycling is a team sport? Each team member has a specific role to play in the race, in order to get their designated rider over the line. It’s a very technical race, with the team plan decided by the Sports Director prior to the race, so all six riders know what their specific job is during the race. The Commonwealth Games course was a flat course, known as a ‘sprinters course’. A designated team rider is chosen prior to the race and they are ‘protected’ in the peloton right up to the last 100 –200 metres, where they sprint to theBrodieline. was selected as Team Captain to ensure the plan was followed during the race and what am incredible job she did! She also had the role of ‘domestique’ - a support rider keeping the pace fast. If you were watching on the edge of your lounge chair, you would have noticed Brodie out the front a lot, executing her role to perfection!
Symes Grove Manager Sharon Marsden said Sinead had been a welcome addition to the team at the home. “We were thrilled to offer Sinead the chance to follow her passion of working in the aged care sector. She is a valued member of our team here at Anglicare and brings a lot of joy, compassion and empathy in the way she interacts with our residents.”

Employable Me, which followed the stories of nine people with disabilities as they battled to find work. The documentary, which was aired in April, aimed to show potential employers the capable people behind their condition and highlight the importance for people to feel valued. Throughout the series, participants worked with experts, job coaches and their families to uncover their skills and talents and match them to roles that harnessed their strengths. Sinead hoped to work in aged care with the goal of improving the lives of those she cared for. Taking steps toward her goal, she completed a Certificate 3 in Aged Care and was looking for an employer to give her a chance. That employer was Anglicare Symes Grove, where Sinead secured a parttime role, helping residents with their daily needs two days a week. “I make cups of tea and coffee and serve meals and drinks. I feed someone if they can’t feed themselves. I help with activities like craft or physio classes, take residents for walks, or push someone in a wheelchair or wheelie bed so that they can participate in special activities, for example in a concert. QCWA 100 YEAR CELEBRATIONS QCWA Samford SAMFORD STATE SCHOOL YEAR 6 2021
If you’d like to learn more about the Samford CWA, come along to one of their monthly meetings. The next one is on Wednesday 21 September at 10am. Visitors are always welcome and there will be a special guest speaker - and maybe scones!
Thursday 11 August was a wonderful celebration of 100 years of service for the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA). CWA’s across Queensland shared their birthday as only they know how –with a Scone-versation! A beautiful winter morning in Samford was a fitting backdrop for local members and residents to share conversation and delicious scones with jam and cream, lovingly prepared by the ladies in their newly refurbished kitchen.
THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022– Page 3
Some members were fortunate enough to be a part of the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Special Morning tea to celebrate the Centenary too! Women of the CWA have lit up the lives of generations of Queenslanders and it was wonderful to see the city of Brisbane light up significant public spaces in the iconic blue and white. For 100 years, the women of the QCWA have supported and connected women throughout every phase of life, in good times and bad. They have provided opportunities for women around education, health and community. Having earned trust and respect over decades of action, QCWA continues to advocate for change and improvement in all areas that affect the health, safety and well-being of Queensland families in the city, regions and in the bush.
Practical ways to support their work locally is by hiring the air conditioned hall in Main Street, or getting the ladies to cater for your next work or social event. Get in touch with Fiona to find out more: 0421 353 272.

“I became aware of the problems of the food system and the opportunities for getting involved with change. The cultural/ community side of food growing really attracted me; I turned my passion into my business about 15 years ago. Every meal we eat at home has some healthy food from our food garden,” Peter said.
Peter currently consults to individuals, community organisations, governments and property developers via ‘My Food Garden’ where he advises on integrating sustainable urban agriculture into their environments. He has also created a new online place for local food gardeners.
Growing our own food takes time and dedication, offering the chance to learn new skills and nourish ourselves in more ways than“Whenone. a person focuses on the higher purpose for growing food; the wellbeing of themselves and family, education, connecting with friends and neighbours and caring for the earth, I feel an inner fire is created to help one move past the challenges and gain great joy and success.”
Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022 LOCAL
“People enjoy my workshops, coaching and consulting. They are inspired and feel they have a pathway to navigate,” Peter said. “After working in this space for so long now, I have a good feel for land and the process that gardeners need to step through to reach success in their food growing.” This knowledge is also being shared through Peter’s latest online venture.
“This platform, called gleanr.com. au, evolved from a desire to enable food gardeners to easily connect and collaborate around growing food, whilst at the same time have very easy access to localised knowledge that fits their context. The platform is localised to anywhere in Australia. It uses online technology to help people get earthy and connect with others in local groups to help each other. It’s free to subscribe and use all features. In time, some premium features will require paid subscription.”
“I started growing food as a child and since moving to Samford 25 years ago, becoming very interested in growing food on a reasonable scale. I began to work biodynamic methods into my organic food growing, with great success,” Peter said.
Anyone who has attempted rotating a vegetable bed knows that growing organic food is harder than it looks. Local food gardening consultant, Peter Kearney, has spent his life overcoming these food growing challenges, and is passionate about transforming the current food system into a more ecological, local model by teaching others how to self-sustainably grow their own food.
Given his years of knowledge, Peter was heavily involved in the founding years of Millen Farm, our very own urban farming Samford institution growing local, healthy, and nutrient-rich food. Peter led a group of dedicated residents to develop the business, social and environmental focus of the community project, choosing to step aside once the venture passed through its initiation phase.

We need your help! Are you being impacted by the increased air traffic over the Samford Valley or surrounding district, but don’t know what to do about it? Are you wondering if all these aircraft emissions are doing anything to our tank water or food bowl? Are you confused by all the acronyms you have seen? Would you like to have your voice heard, but don’t know how? You still have a chance to let decision makers know how much your quality of life is affected by aircraft noise and their emissions.Somelocal
residents who have met through the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association, are seeking to form a Samford Districts Community Group to address these issues due to increased aircraft movements over our properties. The aim of the group is to assist and inform each other in making sure our concerns are heard by the relevant State and Federal bodies, agencies and authorities, so they understand the local impact and can review this against the current operations at Brisbane airport. There are currently several reviews and reports into these operations, so this is the time to make sure that your voice is heard and the impacts on Samford Valley and surrounding areas are considered. There is power in numbers and this is why we need your help. Tess Bignell is a local and our representative on the Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) Committee. This newly formed community group will liaise with Tess to ensure that we make representations to relevant politicians to monitor how Airservices Australia conducts their Post Implementation Review. With Tess, we will also ensure that the Brisbane Airport Post Implementation Advisory Forum (BAPAF) recommendations and the TRAX Report, due towards the middle of this month, are thoroughly considered. Please contact Tess at tess@bfpca.org.au to find out more. Now is the time to speak up and make some noise about aircraft noise. Let’s work together to re-instate the peace and serenity we all enjoyed in Samford Valley and the surrounding districts. Mark Power & Tess Bignell
Peter’s knowledge and passion for local food growing allows the varied groups and individuals he meets to understand how to make the most of biodynamic agriculture within each of their unique situations.

There were the sweet treats at The Famous Samford Patisserie – so beautifully made with key local ingredients and so thoughtfully labelled – along with the trail pizzas at Latin Shack, the citrus gelatos at Samford Gelato and the local garden soup at Little Tree Bake & Brew House. Visitors and locals alike were spoilt for choice!
You can stay connected with the Trail through social media: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Just search for Samford Edible Garden Trail and we pop up. Like all community events, behind the scenes are a core group of committed volunteers and we all enjoyed ourselves enormously. We gratefully acknowledge the support we received from our local Community Bank Samford who sponsored the Trail, and the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association who auspice our group and make it all possible.
Was this the best Samford Edible Garden Trail yet? We think so! Trail goers loved the more relaxed pace of it stretching over two days. There was more time to wander around, connect with the garden hosts and generally soak up the experience. Many returned from last year and told us they enjoyed revisiting their favourites, as well as wandering through the new gardens. The community spirit on the Trail was tangible. Once again we witnessed the invaluable contribution of the volunteers at the welcome desk of each garden that were the glue holding the event together. We were so happy to have volunteers returning from last year, as well as new ones coming forward. You may have spotted them in their purple t-shirts at the front entry, answering questions, chatting away, and nibbling on the delicious CWA cakes. What a team! Then there were the garden hosts themselves who graciously opened the gates to their inspiring edible gardens for all of us to enjoy. But their generosity didn’t stop there. Not only were their gardens open to the community, but so were their hearts and minds. They answered questions and ran tours and talked until their voices were croaky. By sharing their lived experience of growing food in their backyard, they inspired hundreds of other people to give it a go themselves. If you were in the village over the weekend, you would know that it wasn’t just about the gardens though. One of the goals of the Trail is to continue fostering connections between our local cafes and restaurants and our local growers. Four cafes chose to be involved this year by showcasing locally grown food.
Many trail goers travelled long distances to visit Samford, with some staying in local accommodation and making a weekend of it. We met people who had travelled up from northern NSW, north Qld, and further west. And of course, many were locals who wanted to connect with likeminded folk and be part of something special. The money raised through ticket sales will be channeled back into our community, with our first big project being to help establish a community garden in the village. When you support the Trail, not only do you get to learn more about growing food in your backyard, but you contribute a long way towards building a resilient and supportive community.

“Children’s literature, discussed in a book club, is a fantastic avenue for bringing together diverse learners, starting wherever they are at in their reading, social and emotional skills and growing through each other and the process.”Thisis just the first of what Sue and Fiona hope are more book clubs for different age groups. If you’re interested in learning more, drop in and see Fiona at the bookstore located in the Lifestyle Centre, opposite Café Lagarto. It’s a treasure trove of beautiful books in a peaceful setting which we’re so lucky to now have right here in Samford.

I wonder who will be the CBCA picture book of the year this year? You can check out the shortlist here.
Another wonderful addition at Baffies Oan Books in the Lifestyle Centre is a children’s book club, facilitated by Sue Prior of Prior Learning. The idea came about after Sue and bookshop owner Fiona Taylor, were discussing adult book clubs.
Readers, Megan Daley emphasises that it is stories, not flashcards and online reading programs, that will instil joy in your child and, “ïs one of the best ways you can give them a head start and help them to reach their academic potential.”
To read a good book is to dream with your eyes open, to enter another’s world be it real or highly imagined. When we are taken along a beautifully written or illustrated story, our world comes alive to the myriad possibilities that can exist for us. What a precious gift to give our children. A world that is wide with experiences, histories, differences and similarities to make them feel safe as well as eager to explore, learn and imagine for themselves.InRaising
The club members – initially all boys but now with their first girl member - is still discovering what each other likes to read, bringing along books they have read, providing reviews and recommendations for each“Soonother.we will be looking at the Ipswich Children’s Library and Children’s Book Council recommendations, so we will be branching out with our reading lists. The Book Keepers is a diverse group so our reading lists reflect that too,” added Sue. The Book Keepers meet weekly on Fridays from 3:15pm - 3:45pm at Baffies Oan Books. It’s a free, fun activity where like-minded children can meet, form new friendships, learn different perspectives from each other and participate in leading a group while being inspired by literature, whatever reading level they’re at.

“I facilitate, but the book club belongs to the children. We also now have a name, democratically chosen, “The Book Keepers” and the group is designing a sign. Watch this space!” said Sue.
“I have always loved children’s literature. About 13 years ago my family and I lived in Bangkok where I was teaching in a large British international school which our children also attended. As part of the after school clubs program on offer, I established a book club for interested primary aged children and it was very successful,” said Sue. A Facebook post on the Baffies Oan page during school holidays piqued interest and Sue and Fiona ran a couple of information sessions to see if children had ideas about how it might work. A lovely family of boys aged 8-10 turned up first because their parents established a roadside library and were interested in the concept of a book club.

Jo credits both the Samford area and her battle with chronic pain for the fruition of her book published under the name Ovidian, encapsulating her collaborative visual poetry project as a whole with contributions from other artists. “I draw most of my inspiration from nature. Most of the poems in the book formed while I walked around the garden at home here in Kupidabin, Samford Valley. I don’t think the book would exist without this place,” she said. “I feel very fortunate to live in the heart of the Valley, to be surrounded everyday by the richness of our native flora and fauna.”

BOOK WEEK 20 - 26 AUGUST DID YOU KNOW... When you advertise in The Village Pump, you’re helping to support local groups and clubs too! FIND OUT HOW editor@villagepump.org.au
“This book is fuelled by a sense of wonder for the natural world. It makes sense to give back to what gave to me in the first place,” Jo “Thesaid. 2020 bushfires destroyed so much of our precious environment and WWF’s program is helping to restore some of what was lost.” Ovidian is available from Jo’s online shop: ovidian.com.au or from local sellers: Baffies Oan Books in the Lifestyle Centre and Wattle and Daisy in Main St.
Inspired by the aestheticism of her surrounds, local author Jo Ward has captured the essence of our natural world in her first book of poetry. Published by Hardie Grant, ‘A Quiet Sorcery’ is her passion project with proceeds from each book being donated to WWF’s Regenerate Australia program.
Jo tutored Literature at the University of Queensland for many years, and in 2018 found herself regularly writing creatively for her own wellbeing.“Iwasstruggling immensely with chronic pain at the time, and writing short, restful poems became a kind of therapeutic effort. Writing is a sustained act of attention, and I find a lot of joy attending to the ordinary beauty of things around me,” Jo said. “At first, I would simply recite a few short lines under my breath - “The light swims around a shoulder / gliding in, and out, and in”—but I felt compelled to transform my poems into something more tangible,” she said. “I wanted to strengthen that feeling of lightness and ease I was searching for in language, by drawing on visual art forms to create a much more immersive and inviting space. I reached out to collaborate with some incredibly talented photographers and artists whose work I felt evoked that sense of calm and wonder within the natural world, and that’s how Ovidian was born.”

The affirming nature of Jo’s book extends beyond her quest for wellness, also giving back to the environment. Jo will donate $2 for each book sold to the WWF Regenerate Australia program, reviving landscape and wildlife devastated by the 2020 bushfires.
The book aims to create a visual form of poetry that feels approachable and restful, opening a space to contemplate the natural world through language.

research has taken place into the differences between reading on a device and reading a printed text. Anne Mangen, Professor of literacy at the Norwegian Reading Centre, University of Stavanger Norway, found respondents to a printed text scored significantly better on literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension, indicating they understood and retained more than those who undertook the same reading task on screen. Follow-up studies found primary school children who regularly read from screens were 8 months behind book readers in reading age. Focused attention span tests showed a drop from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8.25 seconds in 2015 when digitalisation was well established. A later study of office workers found that they could only concentrate on a reading task for an average of three minutes. The bombardment of information online also brings challenges. About 73% of Americans report feeling information overload yet continued to interface on a variety of devices and media, for both professional and social interaction. This “content shock” shows users are exposed to more than five times the information per day than the average person was exposed to in 1986 and that information exposure rate is ever growing.
The beeps, buzzes and vibrations of digital devices heralded a reading revolution at the end of the last century. By the end of the first decade of the new millennium the impact of having the equivalent of multiple encyclopedias, atlases, news services and games arcades on or about our person was takingSignificanteffect.

Four years of waiting has finally stitched together for Samford Patchworkers, who are thrilled to share their beautiful handiwork with visitors to their Quilt Show over the weekend of 10 & 11 September. Held at the Samford Community Hall, the Quilt Show will feature Kaleidoscope and One-block Wonder quilts. These are just as they sound - quilts make with blocks in the style of a kaleidoscope. The result is an amazing range of patterns from the one fabric.Samford Patchworkers are a group of ladies and men who meet in Samford regularly to share their love of patchwork. Groups meet during the day and evening with many great friendships made over 30 years. Along with making their own quilts, these talented patchworkers also create a range of craft items for sale at their bi-annual quilt shows, including this event in You’llSeptember.beable to view over 80 unique, handcrafted quilts of all sizes and for all ages, as well as a range of children’s gifts and craft items. EFTPOS will be available and your $6 entry fee includes morning or afternoon tea. Best of all, the funds raised from entry and sales on the day will be donated to two wonderful charities – Samford Support Network (SSN) and Orange Sky Laundry. We’re all familiar with the great work of the SSN who assist so many isolated and vulnerable in our community. Orange Sky Laundry connects people through a regular laundry and shower service, creating a safe, positive and supportive environment. It is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness. If you’re heading to the Samford State School 150th Anniversary Spring Festival on 10 September, you can tick off both great events on the one day!

One Sunday at Samford, all was going well when, out of the blue, a terrible storm hit. It came up so quickly there wasn’t even time to make for the hall, so we all huddled in the tennis shed, which was a rather flimsy shelter. The net, balls and rackets were piled on the table. We got torrents of rain, loud thunder, wild lightening and strong wind. The storm passed over as quickly as it came. Shortly a message came for Jack Lawson to get his tank off the train line as the train was nearly due! The wind had blown Jack’s empty water tank onto the line in the cutting (now Cash Av). Most of the men went to push the tank down the line. What a din! Rolling an empty tank down a train line. We ‘girls’ were scared the train would come, as the men would not hear it, so while watching for train smoke we shouted directions. At last, the tank was rolled to the side and the train came through- late as usual.” It’s great to see the courts rebuilt. The new Samford courts are all weather. No need to grab the net before the rain wets the tapes; no need to put your racket under your skirt to keep it dry if playing in showers; no worry that the wood would get damp and warp and get grit into your good Klipspringer Gut (look for the two red lines). Today’s racquets are mostly aluminium, fibreglass, graphite with nylon gut.The ‘new courts’ have recently been replaced by new courts at Samford Parklands.Museum open Wednesday and Sunday 10am- 4pm. THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022– Page 19 DO YOU REMEMBER THIS BRISBANE ICON?
It’s common for someone to thank Ken Mander-Jones for helping to create wonderful memories for them and their families. The former Samford Village resident was the founder and owner of iconic Brisbane tourist attraction, the Australian Woolshed, which operated from 1982 to 2006. Based on an outback sheep station it featured ram shows, sheep shearing, billy tea and damper, bush dancing, native wildlife including koalas, wombats, dingoes, emus and crocodiles, and amusements such as waterslides and miniature golf. In its heyday the award-winning tourist destination at Ferny Hills attracted thousands of visitors from around the world each month. At one point the Australian Woolshed hosted 1,000 ram shows annually, drawing 75,000 foreign tourists; served 100,000 meals a year in the on-site restaurant; and was the third-biggest user of Polaroid film in the state. Remember Polaroid?Ken’svision to bring the country to the city was somewhat inspired by his days working on the land as a farmer in regional Queensland. “I was running a sheep property at Dirranbandi and in the 1960s we had the most shocking drought that I’ve been associated with. There was 12 months where it didn’t rain,” Ken said. “That made me start thinking that there had to be better things in life than running a farm in a drought. I moved into cattle, but soon that industry was falling off the cliff too.” After selling his farm and livestock and moving to Brisbane in 1979, Ken and his wife Margaret started working on their vision to develop a theme park, originally known as Rainbow Valley.
With the Crocodile Dundee movie exposing the ‘land down under’ to a foreign audience of millions, Ken notes “the Australian tourism industry became quiteAfterprofitable”.aname change to Australian Woolshed, the tourist attraction welcomed a seemingly endless stream of overseas visitors, particularly people from Japan, China and Singapore seeking an Aussie ‘outback’ experience. The business was an Australian Tourism Award winner. Ken’s favourite animals at Australian Woolshed were the koalas that would crawl up his leg and sit on his shoulder, which “people couldn’t believe was possible”. Ken now lives a quieter life at Carinity Brookfield Green where his walls are adorned with photos of his time sharing Australia’s history with us all.
“I started a tourist attraction with a waterslide for a start – the first waterslide in Brisbane – to get a bit of cash flow. I always had the idea of a woolshed because I knew the sheep industry. It was always going to be the main part of the business,” Ken said. “People told me plenty of times that they thought I was crazy. We were building it all on 22 per cent interest. It was always going to take a number of years to be viable, and that’s exactly what it did become.”

For most of human history we’ve only had brief spurts of ‘comfort’ – full after a hunt, warm in our abode and safe from predators or other tribes. Not anymore. Now we have climate-controlled houses, cars and offices. Food is readily available: in the kitchen, down the hall or from a vending machine (please don’t get into the habit of eating food from a vending machine!). We’re seldom exposed to extreme heat or cold. Some of us consider not eating for a few hours as ‘starving’. Unfortunately, spending so much time in our comfort zones is Introducingunhealthy.Micro-Challenges. This is one of the reasons I advocate the concept of Micro-Challenges. Over the past few years I have had: Cold-only showers for a year; eaten meat and eggs only for a month; multiple 5-day fasts. Why should we do these?
A big thank you must go to Moreton Bay Regional Council and Cr Darren Grimwade for the recent grant to purchase new Showjumping equipment to help hold these days at our club. A big thank you also to the parents and volunteers assisting us to make our club move forward and keep up to date with great facilities and equipment.

As we’re constantly exposed to more comfort, more consuming, more everything. This reigns it in a bit. Second, it increases appreciation (or gratitude). Best meal I’ve ever had? Mince and cheese (after my first 5-day fast). In our comfortable 21st Century, first-world lives, it’s good to remind ourselves how easy we have it. Oxenford Pony Club Jumping Equitation was a rewarding day for Charlotte, Chloe, Ella and Frankie who came home with placings and also had a lot of fun camping over and competing together.
Our riders have been out and about in August making the most of the sunny days.
The club held a very successful jump training day, with many riders from local areas being able to utilise the show jumping facilities and train in a relaxed environment. Late August will see a weekend full of gymkhana fun, and again riders from all over southeast Qld will utilise the lovely grounds and club facilities.

FERN LEAF BANKSIA
Banksia oblongifolia can live for over 60 years, in spite of the fact that they live in areas prone to bushfire. They have two fire survival strategies. After fire, the dormant buds on the lignotuber sprout and two to three years later they can flower and set seed. The heat from the fire causes seeds to be released from their follicles and thus a new generation of plants become established. Banksias have evolved in Australia’s phosphate-deficient soils and have specialised roots that form dense mats of short lateral rootlets just below the leaf litter. These enhance nutrient uptake by increasing nutrient solubility. Being adaptable to different well drained soil types, these hardy, slow-growing shrubs are ideal for small, sunny or lightly shaded gardens. They are low maintenance plants that can be kept in shape by pruning to form, for example, a colourful border. They grow well in containers and are amenable to bonsai. The flowers and fruit are a useful addition to floral arrangements.
The fern leaf banksia (Banksia oblongifolia) is found along the east coast of Australia from Wollongong to Rockhampton, growing in sandy heath soils, swamp margins and as an understory in eucalypt forests. In the former regions, in very low nutrient soils it only reaches a height of about a metre but in richer, forest soils it can grow to 3 metres in height. This shrub has several stems growing out of a woody base (lignotuber) that has dormant buds and contains food reserves.
New leaves and branchlets are covered in a rusty fur that is shed as they mature. The adult leaves are green above and whitish underneath, arranged alternately along the stem, about 10cm long and are oblong or egg-shaped. The margins are mildly serrated.Between January and October flower spikes arise from the ends of the branchlets. These 15cm long cylindrical spikes are composed of a large number of flowers that start as blue-grey or greenish yellow buds that open to yellow. They produce copious nectar which is used as a bush food, or medicine for coughs and colds, and which attracts a large variety of honeyeaters and bees.Itis also a butterfly host plant. The spikes lose their flowers with age and become swollen and woody. Each flower’s ovary is embedded in the spike and develops into a seed pod or follicle containing two seeds.

Banksias are generally associated with coastal heath. Different species are, however, found from the coast to montane regions.
TREES: An essentialecological
Reflecting on the recent celebration of National Tree Day, often the first thing that comes to mind on the topic of the importance of trees is their role in our environment. And while trees play an important role in contributing to the environment, perhaps a more specific and observable role they play is their crucial part in sustaining a functioning ecosystem. Trees contribute to the ecosystem in more ways than one to support life. An example of this is trees as an ecosystem themselves. An ecosystem can be any size as it is simply a system formed by living organisms interacting with each other and their surroundings.
A thefeedinginteracting-bees,ants,onegumtreethis.isgumtreesimplesaplinganexampleofOnasinglesaplingmayfindbeetles,arachnidsallliving,andongumtree, creating a small ecosystem for the organisms to thrive in. These small ecosystems formed by trees can help make up much larger ecosystems such as rainforests or bushland, which ultimately make up what is known as the biosphere (all earth’s ecosystems combined).Treeswill also act as a food source for other animals because they are a producer organism which sit on the bottom of the food chain (or first trophic level) and act as food for other organisms, fed on by animals higher up in the food chain. Another way trees support the ecosystem is by forming commensalism with other species, in which the species benefits by living in or on the tree without harming it as a species interaction. This can be seen true with birds, possums, reptiles, bugs and plants which stem out from a tree’s trunk. Tree’s play such an important part in the ecosystem by fulfilling these roles. We can easily take for granted how much they benefit thousands of different multi-cellular organisms, which helps hold ecosystems in place and holds together our perfectly created biosphere.

Arguably, the Samford district’s most frequently encountered brown-and-white butterfly is the Common Crow (Euploea corinna), which has a wingspan of about 80mm. It is found in rainforest, parks and gardens from northern WA all the way to Victoria. The wide distribution reflects its huge range of host plants in the Dogbane family (Apocynaceae), including Hoyas, Milk Vines (Marsdenia), Silkpods (Parsonsia) and Currant Bush (Carissa ovata), as well as some figs and the introduced oleander.
Common Crow
The adults take nectar from a variety of flowers and the males extract toxic alkaloids from plants such as Rattlepods (Crotalaria) and Silkpods. For most of the year, these butterflies tend to have a slow flight just a few metres above the ground, but fly higher to reach their over-wintering colonies in sheltered gorges or in mangroves. The larva, which grows to 60mm, is orange with black transverse bands edged with white. It has four pairs of fleshy filaments (‘horns’). The pupa to about 18mm is a stunning silver or gold colour, usually hanging below a leaf. The Common Aeroplane ( Phaedyma shepherdi) is also brown and white, but it is slightly smaller with a wingspan of around 60mm. It has broader white markings on the hindwing, which fuse to form a band, hence the alternative name White-banded Aeroplane.Itinhabits rainforest, gardens and parklands and is found from Cape York to central NSW. It has a characteristic ‘flapand glide’ flight pattern and may settle with its wings open or closed. It also uses a wide range of host plants, ranging from Native Elm (Aphananthe philippinensis), Koda (Ehretia acuminata) and all species of Brachychiton. The grey-green larvae are difficult to find because they hide under chewed leaves they have webbed together. The pupa is brown, again usually hanging below a leaf.
Common Aeroplane Watch out also for the more infrequent Purple Crow ( Euploea tulliosus ), which shimmers with a purple iridescence in sunlight.Whydon’t you let us know about any interesting butterfly sightings or send us a picture? editor@villagepump.org.au.

The notation on the back of this photo says Dayboro 1924 although the players are unknown. Hopefully someone ferreting through old family photos may come up with some names.
The score of that football match, which was played only a few days after the Mt Pleasant Football Club was formed, is unknown but it could have been an interesting match. A team was also formed in the township at some stage as the Brisbane Courier of 6th August 1913 recorded “…On Saturday afternoon a team of footballers from Mt. Pleasant visited Terrors Creek, and after a fast and exciting game the match with the local team resulted in a draw, each side scoring 5 points.” The Queenslander of 3rd July 1930 reported “…A team of footballers from Wilston open the season with a match with the Dayboro team at Dayboro on June 22, Dayboro winning by 13 points to 12.”

Football clubs have come and gone over the years. They are certainly not new. The first club in the district was formed in 1912, 110 years ago. The Brisbane Courier of 2nd July 1912 reported “…TERROR’S CREEK, At a meeting of young men, held at Mt. Pleasant, a football club – the first in the district – was formed. The first match will be played against Strathpine on July 6.”

War, creator of the popular Alex Rider spy series for teenagers, sets the scene with editor Susan Ryeland reading the latest manuscript of disillusioned but successful author Allen Conway, who spoofs the Agatha Christie format and her fascination with nursery rhyme allusions in titles and chapter headings, in his 1950s mystery. The twists and turns abound, as do the clues and red herrings but just as you are thinking “By George, I’ve got It!” when you probably haven’t, you are dumped in a modern “real-life” mystery that only an editor can solve. The novel starts slowly but once you are into it, you’ll find a fiendishly plotted crime novel with blazing flashes of literary humour and a fabulous twist. It’s a brainy novel, a very new take on an old genre.
If you are looking for a
sophisticated complex piece of storytelling, sympathetically translated by Tina Kover so that it retains its beautiful lyricism.

THE HILLTOP Assaf Gavron
Steadfast resident, Gabi Kupper, once a free-spirited kibbutz-dweller, now religious zealot, has his life thrown into turmoil when Roni, his prodigal brother, a secular Jew and failed high-stakes Wall Street trader, arrives on Gabi’s doorstep, penniless. The settlement is dismayed when Roni plans to sell the “artisanal” olive oil from the Palestinian village to Tel Aviv yuppies. A curious Washington Post correspondent discovers the settlement’s existence, making it the focus of an international diplomatic scandal. A wealthy American pours money into the place. The government orders the eviction of all the settlers who return as soon as the government focuses on other problems. The military build a border fence through the Palestinians’ olive grove and the chaos of settlement life continues.
Assaf Gavron’s multi-winning novel is both serious and satirical, loaded with dry humour and crisp insight into the absurdity of life on the West Bank and the complex relationship between Israel and the United States. The characters are rich and mostly endearing in a tough no-nonsense way. If there is a criticism of the work, it is that the richness of Palestinian life is flatlined, but Gavron’s purpose was to grapple with one of the most charged geo-political issues of our time from the point of view of Jewish settlers on the West Bank. Gavron’s masterpiece stands out as one of Israel’s best…a must read.

In a fertility clinic waiting room in Paris, single Kimia Sadr, punk-rock aficionado, is bombarded by fragmented memories of her childhood in Teheran, and her family’s stories of how they survived in the phallocratic society where imperialistic assaults, coups and repression are the norm. Cynical, confronting, witty footnotes help to give global and national context to Iran’s history.Themain themes of the book are how an individual’s identity is effected by one’s culture and one’s family and how, some, in a migration whether chosen or forced, to another place with an established culture, disintegrate in order to integrate.

The portent of evil Emily feels throughout the gypsies’ stay is carefully balanced by the care and love given to her by Buza, the old Zulu nightwatchman, who through beautiful tribal stories and talking of his homelands and daughter, shows her how a loving family might be. Though morality is not fashionable in modern fiction and though this was originally published as a young adult work (I would not give it to anyone younger than fifteen), this book encourages the reader to explore the fragmentation and hate in society and what compassion and love might take to make it whole.

Kya survives by catching and selling fish and crabs to obtain the small amount of food she can afford. Kya grows into a beautiful, mysterious teenager. Two young men are taken by her beauty and attempt to have a relationship with her. It is no surprise that she rejects them as she has no experience in how to engage with the outside world. It takes time for her to build trust, allowing them to be part of her life. One of these men, Tate Walker teaches Kya to read and write. Kya falls in love with Tate and is devastated when he leaves for College, seemingly abandoning her as has everyone before him. When the other man, Chase Andrews, is found dead, Kya is immediately the number one suspect. Brought out of isolation and into the public eye, Kya’s murder trial raises many questions. I enjoyed reading this book immensely. The imagery captivated by Delia Owens really added to the pleasure of following a plot that was nail-biting, holding my attention right up to the final page. Following Kya’s life: the beauty, simplicity and innocence of it certainly made her character life-like and likeable. However, the ending blew me away as it contradicted my picture of it.

Twelve-yearold Emily Iris, the narrator, searches for the essence of love in a family where Mum plays more than tennis with Dennis and Dad is immersed in the business of finding gold in chocolate. The only glue that holds her parent’s marriage together is an eagerness to take in vagabonds to ease the tension between them. Their daughters are more trophies than beloved children. In 1968, they take in a rough wildlife photographer, his wife and boys. Emily is shocked at how physical and mental abuse can stick a family together. Her gentle, loving, naive sister denies that possibility and is shattered beyond repair by the braindamaged son of the wanderers who camp in the family’s extensive grounds. Emily’s world view widens until she understands how hate, distrust and segregation govern her society and how love and compassion might save it.

Kania Sadr’s father, Iranian political activist, is broken by the effort, can’t even ride an elevator because it is “for them”, the French. He establishes a hub of ex-pat dissidents which leads to violence. Kimia rebels, turning to debauchery and punk rock to find another self. One small phrase buried in the book signals another level of her disorientation, beyond that of a rebellious daughter of a political refugee relocated to a strange land: that of her gender identity. This is a book loaded with confronting issues, beautifully written, which makes it a compelling read — a definite contender for my book of the year.

While it is good to be able to keep some destinations hidden away, Samford has become a popular place, not only to live but to visit for the day and it is time for some beautification works that will help cater for this. To help minimise disruptions to residents and businesses, the project will be carried out over six stages and is expected to take approximately 24 weeks to complete. Works will include the renewal and widening of existing footpaths, new landscaping with additional street trees, modern street furniture, bigger bins and four new alfresco areas.

I am so pleased that this month will see the start of a $1.2 million facelift for Main Street Samford which will provide improved disability access, better amenities for local residents and great new streetscaping.
There has been a long period of consultation for the project to enable locals, businesses and community groups to have a say on how the finished streetscape will come together. Through this feedback, a lot of consideration has been given to ensure that wherever possible, works that may cause disruption to businesses and the community will be undertaken out of business hours, and this is another reason for the project to be completed in six stages between now and January 2023. Works start at the northern end of town near Samford Creek, and there will of course be some changes during the works, but VMS boards will be in place as well as clearly marked detours for pedestrian access. Please take notice of changing conditions as you move through Samford, have a bit of patience and take direction from onsite workers so everyone is kept safe.
