LITTLE STAGS RAISE THE CURTAIN
On Sunday 5th March, ten little Under 8 Samford Stags, flanked by their coaches and supported by about 50 of their biggest fans, made their way into the Big Smoke! The meeting place – the Wally Lewis statue outside Suncorp Stadium. Their mission – to play the curtain raiser ahead of the Redcliffe Dolphins NRL debut. They gathered and took team photos, pulled on their boots and changed into their green and gold jerseys.
Finding their seats, the excited little players waited to be called down to the big green paddock. As they ran out, waving to their adoring, also green and gold clad fans, we as parents took a moment to look up at the big screen and soak in the amazing opportunity that had been given to our little footy players.
Taking on the Nambour Crushers, our boys did themselves and their club proud, coming away with a win. Realistically, the score didn’t matter. It was all over far too quickly, and the players returned to their seats sweaty, ten foot taller than when they ran on and itching to get back out there again!
We all settled in to watch the Dolphins play their game, but to be honest, it was nowhere near as impressive as the game we had just witnessed. Ten little Staggies, playing the game of their lives.
We would like to thank the Redcliffe Dolphins for the invitation to play, our club and committee, the Samford Stags for coordinating the outing, allowing our kids to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Also, to the kids family and friends who came to support them (and cheer VERY loudly!) and to our amazing coaches, Dennis Quinlan and Matt Fox who take time out of their own busy family and
work lives to train, support and encourage our kids each week.
We are all so lucky to be a part of the Stags community. The season kicks off in just over a week but I think it’s safe to say, these kids have already played their “game of the season”!

SAMFORD SHINES AT 2023 CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY EVENT
On the sunny morning of Sunday 5th March, a large group of eager participants gathered for the Samford Clean Up Australia Day Walk. Nationally, this is the largest community environmental event and this year, Samford Landcare organised an easy 4.5km loop from Samford Village and back, collecting rubbish along the route.
Although most would agree that Samford is mostly litter free, surprisingly many bags full of discarded rubbish were collected, with the most unusual item being a pair of (clean) underpants.
We all want a clean and safe environment, now and in the future. So, if you see litter about, get it into a bin and give yourself a pat on the back.
David Reed
Along the way, walkers took rest at various points where information talks on special Samford environmental activities were provided by Mel and Robyn from Life for Wildlife, Peter Storer at the Samford EcoCorridor, and Greg Prior at Millen Farm.
Upon return to the start point at John Scott park, walkers were treated to refreshments kindly provided by the Lions Club of Samford. There was plenty of interest also at the information marquees staffed by Life for Wildlife and Samford Landcare.

INVOLVED SAMFORD LIVE BRINGS LOCAL MUSIC FULL CIRCLE
Saturday 25 March will see Samford Live kick off a community based, locally produced, music series. A committed team has galvanised local support over months of planning for this artist driven venture. Interestingly, it is not the first such series.
In 1999 Samford Performers Café commenced at the Mt Glorious Rd Church Hall. Local musician Dale Jones picks up the story:
“The Performers Café was created in 1999 by the Samford Songwriters, a local group formed to give a forum and support for local songwriters. We would meet in the Old Catholic Church Hall every week and the Performers Cafe was held on the first Friday of every month.”
This Café provided a platform for all manner of local artist and choirs, including Mt Nebo’s Peace ‘n’ Choir led by Ann Birmingham, still going strong today.
Many challenges were encountered along the way including exorbitant public liability insurance costs which threatened to end the series. A yearly Farmers Hall Gala Café raised money for this expense. The series continued for almost a decade.
New Traditions Begin
Today we come full circle and Dale Jones and Wayne Hinton, who both performed at the Performers Café, will return to open Samford Live with their folk harmony group
Feed Lucy. Dale concludes: “the Performers Café was the last community based live music series in Samford, so it’s great to see Samford Live, with the monthly format, getting off the ground, and it’s particularly gratifying to be part of the inaugural event.”

of the night in Afghanistan, working with and leading passionate and capable men and women, experiencing the heartbreak of loss of life or the despair of mental illness and suicidal ideation; I look back now and although there’s some things I didn’t like very much, all those experiences are the bedrock I stand on today.”
The burden of leadership and prior deployment eventually left Kevin diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety. However, he still successfully built a second career in civilian search and rescue flying.
prevention and promote conversation to further destigmatise suicide and mental illness.
“Leaving the Army, I was deeply ashamed of my self-perceived ‘failure’ in having mental illness and suicidal ideation so I asked my wife to help me keep it a secret, which we did for years until I realised that the secret we were keeping was actually keeping us,” he said.
Drawing on his personal crippling mental health journey resulting from his Australian Defence Force service, Kevin Humphreys has sought to help others in similar situations through mental health advocacy. He also founded Cor Infinitus, establishing memorials nation-wide, dedicated to those that served our nation before taking their own life. Kevin was recently named Dickson Citizen of the Year for his inspirational leadership and service to those around him.
Kevin served in the Australian Defence Force as a Black Hawk and Chinook helicopter pilot for 20 years, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel.
“I believe that to serve one’s nation through the profession of arms is the most noble of deeds one can undertake. The military gave me the highest of highs and lowest of lows in various places across Australia and around the globe,” he said.
“Whether it was delivering famine relief in PNG, flying assault missions in the middle
“Every experience of PTSD is unique. I was very fortunate that my PTSD wasn’t severe, but the depression and anxiety was crippling. I was in denial and hiding them until the point of having my breakdown and then I couldn’t hide any longer,” Kevin said.
“With a loving wife, professional support and my own desire to regain my health, I visualised a new and improved version of myself that allowed me to return to being functional again and return to work,” he said.
“The harder, deeper, longer effort was emotional acceptance of my condition. That forced me to look far beyond conventional approaches and re-connect with myself at a soul level – something that seemed completely woo-woo at the time! Truth was that even though I was well enough to return to work, emotionally I still felt fractured. By re-connecting with myself at a deep level, I regained a wholeness that had been missing for a long time.”
In founding Cor Infinitus, Kevin sought to create memorials to assist in suicide

“I was in Townsville on Anzac Day 2020 and visited ANZAC Park; quietly reflecting on my own career, mental illness, friends lost in service and friends who had taken their own life post service. One of the more recent was a pilot I flew with in Afghanistan, a Townsville local named Captain Steve Fazel who had ended his life just four months earlier.”
“I then noticed an A5 funeral service booklet on the ground with a rock on each corner holding it there. It was for Private Bradley Carr, an infantry soldier who had taken his life on Anzac Day the year prior. I didn’t know Bradley, but he was 34 when he took his life and I was 35 when I almost took mine and it hit me pretty hard. At the time Steve and Bradley were just two of almost 500 current and ex-service personnel to have taken their own lives in the previous 20 years alone.”
“I thought ‘This is terrible. We can do better than this. We have to do better than this. Families should have somewhere that acknowledges their loved one who served and took their own life. But both the community and the families are going to need courage to make this happen.’
“So ‘Cor Infinitus’ (Infinite Courage) was born to provide the families and loved ones dignity and respect.”
Many families that have been impacted by veteran suicide have been overwhelmed by the memorials, with some saying this is the first time they’ve experienced solace since losing their loved one.
Kevin is also a Community Ambassador for Mates4Mates and the Mental Health Ambassador for AIRBUS Australia Pacific. Despite his national and community achievements, Kevin remains humble about his latest accolade.
“I’m blown away! Hearing the stories of selfless dedication and service from so many in our community was heart-warming and inspiring. To have been chosen as the Citizen of the Year from among these incredible people was truly humbling.”

WHO CARES?
A question often asked and often with an inflection that indicates that maybe nobody does. Over the last couple of years, we have seen a number of expressions of care. They were plain to see but may not have been recognised as such. As we complied with the directions of medical authorities during the pandemic, as we wore masks and maintained that 1.5m distance from others, we were expressing care for those around us. Was it effective? Did it really keep people safe from the virus? Maybe we’ll never know the impact of those actions. It is hard to know sometimes what benefits our actions might have. Most impacts are very often unseen.
Recently we were recipients along with other organisations in Samford of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). After going through a simple grant application process, Community Bank Samford - Bendigo Bank have provided these AEDs to be placed around our community.
Maybe they will never be used. Hopefully they will never be needed. Hopefully no one will find themselves in a situation where these are the things that are needed to keep them alive. But if they ever do…. Thanks to the generosity of our Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank) there is one not too far away.
The AED at St Pauls (pictured) is in the porch at the church entrance, just outside the door. We hope you will never need to use it, but if you do, you now know where it is. Well done Community Bank Samford.

Ray Vuillermin’s passion for flying has not only seen him soar through a lifelong career in aviation, but is benefitting Community Library Samford where he currently volunteers. In managing the Military/ Transport book collections, Ray is keen to share his passion with others, particularly in recommending books on aviation history.
“It is said those that do not read history are bound to repeat it. I enjoy researching people, aeroplanes, technical and operational history to revisit why things were done as they are,” Ray said.
“My experience is that aviation history does repeat itself, so knowing why it is as it is in the first place is important, and often time saving! And sometimes for me it is nothing more that drooling over the pictures of great aeroplanes and reading and enjoying vicariously, other pilots’ experiences.”
Since volunteering at Community Library Samford, Ray has met other likeminded people with backgrounds in aviation, transport and the military who heard he was setting up a portion of the library dedicated to those subjects. He has also uncovered a number of out-of-print books.
“Books devoted to specific subjects often have a very limited print run so they come and they go; and there are some gems lost to time. This is something our library offers; not just related to my subjects,” Ray said.
Ray started flying at sixteen on Tiger Moths as an Air Training Corps (RAAF) cadet. He became a junior instructor before joining TAA spending three years in New Guinea before working in Darwin for the NT Air Medical service. He then spent ten years as a Singapore Airlines captain on long range Boeing 747 operations.
At one stage he teamed up with a farmer in Western Australia who had trained to be a pilot but ended up managing the family farm. The pair conducted aerial tours around Southern Africa visiting farms, game parks and other interesting places around South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
“One concluding by one of the passengers buying an aeroplane in Johannesburg and me then flying it back to Melbourne around the periphery of the Indian Ocean.” Ray said.
By volunteering at Community Library Samford, Ray continues to share his passion for the skies, and meet others with a similar
affinity for all things aircraft.
“Religious people talk of a vocation, in their case making it sound as though some people are hard wired for a life in the clergy. I sometimes wonder if pilots and other aviation people are similarly wired, but towards the sky. It’s usually a lifelong devotion to a job many wonder why they get paid to do,” Ray said.
“This is especially so in my generation of aviators. A problem we all have is how to get those we love to understand our passion; we would love to share it. There are only one or two authors that go near capturing it, perhaps Earnest Gann and Anton St Expury, both in the library.”
Community Library Samford currently hold trailer sales on the last Saturday of every month from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Samford RSL car park. Visitors can pick up not just books, but also toys, puzzles and games.

DAVID BANNERMAN - COMMUNITY TRIBUTES
OBITUARY
David Ian Bannerman was born 4th November 1947 in Moree, New South Wales and died at 11:30am Monday 27th February 2023. He died on his own terms in sound mind and in good spirits surrounded by family.
David was born left handed and forced to write right handed. He never learned to draw with his right hand and would have to swap hands to underline words. The world was never made for him, he adapted and used what was at hand.
Over the last few weeks, David grew to see his life has touched many. David was a man who served others and who cared little for planning without direct consequence. He was a man who lived in the present. I asked him what I should write in his obituary, but he was nonplussed as he would never read it. He just told me what not to write, so I will take this advice.
David saw Samford grow from a small town on the fringes to what we know it as today. Many of the organs that help its functioning show his fingerprints. He was instrumental in the saving of the Farmers Hall, in modernising and humanising the Tip and establishing healthy political dialogue in the Valley.
Reducing a life to a few columns of copy is impossible. David has done many things and been many things to many people. These are all things that must be talked about, they are too hard to put into print, too reductive, too simplistic.
David was the husband to Helen, my mother, whom he has always said saved him. To tell the story of my father is incomplete without Helen. She met him at an introductory morning tea for prospective honours students studying English Literature at the University of Queensland. I will forever be grateful to the University of Queensland for introducing them.
David has always said his greatest achievement was his family and it is a great pleasure to be a part of it. The nuclear family may be a quaint idea in 2023, but it meant the world to my father. His sons and his grandchildren were central to his world. Biology is an indisputable fact and we all hold some of him; this gave him great joy.
Throughout his life, David lived on his own terms. He lived without debt and was beholden to nobody. He did what he wanted and he did what was right.
David professed to never be able to do anything longer than five years as he would grow bored of it. One notable departure from this rule is the Chronicle Cup which began in 1993 and will continue in his absence. The cricket oval where the bulk of Chronicle matches have been played will be named in his honour, but the grounds will remain the Highlands Recreation Reserve, as was his wish.
Dad will rest in Samford. Samford is home and it always will be.
Malcolm George Bannerman
The Ginger Ninja, the rusty Rastaman, photographer, word smith, cricket tragic, political operator, community protector/ leader, environmental warrior, man of action, and loving devoted husband. Did I mention cricket bloody tragic?
It is with mixed emotions we meet here today – sadness tinged with love, admiration, and I must say pride. I am proud to say David was my mate/our mate. We are surrounded by the results of his life-long quest to make the world – his world, our world – a better place. Whether he was initiating a campaign to make something happen, like bringing Samford Hall back to life, or to stop something happening, such as a development you don’t see in Samford.
Never one to shy away from an argument, he had a unique way of dealing with people. Sometimes if we disagreed on a political note or issue, he would shoot me down; but on occasion would just say ‘Humph’ and spin on his heels. The enigma that is Bannerman.
How much fun did we have at his beloved Cricket ground. Rain, hail, shine, storm, flood, virus, and likely WW3 could not convince him the game should be cancelled. Many years ago when we had mats on the pitch, we played regardless of the fact the mats were floating two inches off the pitch. What a fanatic, but you could see the joy and love for the game that he had. On so many occasions his face would light up seeing the day come together as he would call, ‘Game on.’
Not only did he love the game but he loved the players, the crowd, the kids, the families, the crazies, and the dogs that are our cricket community. He has watched many of us grow up and our kids too. His enthusiasm was infectious and he drove many changes and improvements at the ground all the while bringing people together in such a way that it was never a task to be involved in helping. This is true leadership – bringing people together for the greater good – Ahh! The original hippie he was.
As moderator of the Meet the Candidates night he was second to none, and last federator election the night was live to air via Channel 6 News on Twitter. Well, I couldn’t believe it; but by the time I got home he had achieved rock star status – so many political nerds from all over the country were singing his praises
and he wasn’t that fussed by the attention.
Every time I attend a Meet the Candidates night (especially federal elections) surprisingly I always managed to be picked to ask the final question for a Tory contender. Thanks for that David. An unspoken tip of the hat.
Some days I would be at home and hear someone arrive and my dog Ozzie would rush out madly barking, but he would hush and greet David. On occasion it seemed Dave needed a bit of company and a chat. The offer of a relaxing smoke never declined, followed by insightful sage discussions.
David knew a bit about a lot and a lot about a bit. One thing he really knew about was photography and how to frame a shot. It’s not easy to be a professional umpire and photographer at the same time, but history shows he snapped some mighty shots from behind the stumps. Generally regarded as a fair and balanced umpire, he never shied away from controversy and would stand his ground under some serious heckling, sledging, or howling. Once more, how much fun did we all have? Cricket is the winner.
Well Dave, it’s not goodbye because you will always be with us in our hearts. Your calm, clear, focused approach to moving from this life to the next is brave beyond words and an inspirational educational lesson for us all on how to face the big decisions in life.
It’s been an honour and a privilege to be your friend. Travel well.

Naming Ceremony and Memorial Cricket Game
There will be a Naming Ceremony and Memorial Game of cricket on 26th March at the Highlands Recreation Reserve. Cr Darren Grimwade and Nikki Boyd MP will be in attendance on the day to conduct the naming ceremony and present the Bannerman Cup to the winners of the game. Our Federal Member, Peter Dutton MP has been invited and will attend if commitments allow.
The ceremony to name the oval is to honour our late Chairman of Trustees, David Bannerman, who for the last 21 years has been involved with the upkeep and improvements to the ground. He started the Chronicle Cup competition 30 years ago, which is still a hotly contested competition, he was also involved in getting junior cricket teams to use the oval to give young cricketers a place to play, which continues today.
The game is to be called the Bannerman Cup to celebrate David’s love of the game and contribution to the ground. This is the inaugural game and it is hoped that this will become an annual event on the Samford & Districts calendar.
The day is also a fundraiser for the ground to facilitate the upkeep and improvements to the pavilion and grounds. There will be a

BBQ lunch, bar, raffles, meat traysso please come along and support a community event - all proceeds will go to the ground. We have been wonderfully supported by the local business community with prizes for the raffles and sponsorship for the game. Raffle tickets will be sold out in front of Drakes on the 18th & 25th March, so please come and say hello and buy some tickets which will all be drawn on game day. A quick peek at some of the prizes: a signed Michael Neser Brisbane Heat Team Jersey, Neil Harvey signed Bat, $300 voucher from Samford Garage, $100 voucher from Samford Hotel, $100 breakfast voucher from The Long Yard Larder - plus many more great prizes. EFTPOS machines generously supplied by Community Bank Samford - Bendigo Bank.
All winners will be notified by phone. Hope to see you there.
Tim Nelson Chairman of Trustees
Over 50 years ago, David and family arrived from NSW and established permanently in Samford. Because he lived close to the Samford Waste Disposal site combined with his dislike of waste, David went to the tip on a daily basis sorting out items that others had cast aside. The goods were located as a pile on the ground with an invitation to help oneself and this led to our present facility of Treasure Island. This seems a trivial idea but 40 years ago, it was very innovative and typical of David’s spirited behaviour.
DAVID BANNERMAN - COMMUNITY TRIBUTES
David has supported Samford Museum since the formation of a museum subcommittee of the Progress Association (SDDPA) in 1980 during his time as president.
His donations to the collection of historical material held at Samford Museum include bound copies of his publication the South Pine Chronicle and a collection of associated photos. Photos and documents relating to some other major local events have also been shared eg the proposed South Pine River dam site (thankfully this idea was later quashed) and the restoration of the Farmers Hall.

When Samford Museum approached SDDPA with the idea of having digital copies of The Village Pump made, David approached his contacts within Queensland State Library and the project was taken care of.

When it came to the “Cherry” sailing stories, they would end up at least 1,200 words (up to four times the limit) with three or four photos (two or three photos more than the limit). No editing allowed. I always found room because it was David.
PUBLIC INVITATION INAUGURAL BANNERMAN CUP RIP DAVID BANNERMAN
David delivered the articles personally with the files on a USB – never by email. I think it was so we could have a chat about the latest Samford happenings. David loved a chat!
Food and beers available for sale on the day.
David was keenly interested in the construction of Private Percy Cash Pedestrian bridge. During the preparation of the site, he noticed an interesting iron bark pylon from the original bridge had been removed from the riverbed. Thanks to David’s interest in preserving history, and negotiations by Museum members, the pylon is now displayed in the front garden of Samford Museum.
With others, David was a driving force for establishing the Farmers Hall after it was scavenged from Lutwyche. David took his turn as Progress Association President and during his time the Village Pump continued its expansion to the current excellent paper.
Another of David’s subtle activities was for the support of Jack Mitchell’s concept of planting tree lots where there was waste land. I believe one of the first plantations was at the Samford Waste Facility.
In his later years, David was an active participant at Progress Association meetings and I always found his suggestions and criticisms salient and constructive.
Here was a man who as a citizen did not just talk but actively engaged in improving society. Although my engagement with him was usually at the Waste Facility, having a discussion on what could or should be done, I always found him entertaining and I have been privileged to know him.

I first met David in the mid 90’s when I joined the Progress Association. This is where I learnt of David’s commitment to Samford – keeping a close eye on proposed changes and respecting its history. For many years residents have read David’s cricket articles and his sailing stories in The Village Pump.
There are three words David could not
In the 80’s to early 90’s, David was a volunteer firefighter and part of the management committee in the Samford Fire Brigade. A couple of years ago he gave the Brigade a copy of all the photos he had taken at local fires and other Brigade activities. They now form an invaluable part of the Brigade’s historical record.
Samford has lost a much respected community member who did not sit back and hope things would be done. David made sure action was taken. Job well done, David. Thank you for your many years of watching over Samford.
Anne Wells Past Village Pump Editor
When I put my hand up for President and it was time for David to speak at the AGM, he went through the usual process of speaking about the year that was and then he welcomed me into the role. Before he handed over the chair though, he spoke quite a bit about the significance of the role that I was taking on, how I would quickly get to find out about local politics, “not council politics” he pointed out, local Samford politics. He then said to me that taking on this role would change my life, I’d learn more about Samford than I thought was possible and I would meet people that have given countless hours of service in the community. David believed that being involved in and serving your community was one of the best things you could do for it, not just live here, but be a part of it.
Michael O’Sullivan Past SDPPA President
David’s support has been appreciated and will be missed.

David was years ahead of his time, introducing recycling at the Samford Transfer Station long before the word ‘sustainability’ came into vogue. He was a strong advocate for the innovative revegetation work of the late Jack Mitchell, the principles of which were incorporated into the Eco-Corridor.

We have known David for many years, ever since our children were in kindergarten with David’s boys and have had a friendly relationship over that time. One of David’s many passions was recording the changes occurring in the Samford area over the years. When he was running his local weekly paper The Samford Chronicle, he would feature local stories of people and what was occurring in the area. He had a large photo collection and always had a camera with him in his newspaper days.
Another of his passions was what at timed seemed to be a ‘love affair’ with the local rubbish transfer station. He operated the facility for a period and set up the ‘treasure island’ where useable but no longer needed items would be left for others.
He always had an interest in local politics and would make his opinion known to anyone who wanted to listen, or at the local Progress Association meetings.
We had a friendly relationship with David and Helen, and it is sad to see him go.

Autumn has arrived and the summer rains were nowhere to be seen. Not that we wanted a repeat of last February’s floods, however some good showers to top up the tanks and keep gardens attractive would have been welcome. Will we get April showers?
A town water supply for households and businesses in the village and close
surrounds has not always been available. The Councillors Column in May 1983 edition of The Village Pump reported that the present estimated cost of this project (water supply) was now $306,217. Residents welcomed its arrival in 1983/84.
While browsing through copies of South Pine Chronicle published by David Bannerman 1993-1997, my attention was caught by a photo in 25th January 1996 edition, of the construction of Samford Reservoir in Bygotts Road. Snippets from Council minutes in the same paper: “Samford
main. A tender of $161,838 to construct a 225 mm pressure main from Cash Avenue to Samford Reservoir via Samford Road has been accepted by Council”.
Early planning to sewer Samford Village began in 1997/1998. How the village and nearby surrounds have developed with provision of water and sewerage.
Rainfall totals and flooding reports from various local locations are also published in the complete set of bound South Pine Chronicles, 1993-1997 donated by David Bannerman, publisher and editor of the weekly free paper.
Copies of The Village Pump 1977 - to present day, are also available for research purposes or can be read at https://collections. slq.qld.gov.au/viewer/283363379.
Visitors and researchers are welcome at the Museum Wednesdays or Sundays 10am - 4pm. Prior notice of researchers pending visit and subject is appreciated either by email info@samfordmuseum.com.au or phone 3289 2743. Donations towards the preservation and display of material are appreciated.

New National Volunteering Strategy
Last year The Village Pump spoke to local organisations about the benefits of volunteering, with all groups saying they were very much willing to welcome anyone interested in donating their time to help out. A new National Volunteering Strategy now seeks to further support both volunteers and community organisations, to enable volunteering in Australia to thrive.
The well-timed strategy launched recently, as volunteer numbers nation-wide are in decline. In 2010, one third of Australian adults were involved in formal volunteering. This rate dropped to one quarter of adults in 2022.
Over the next 10 years, the National Volunteering Strategy will guide the actions needed to achieve a better future for volunteering.
Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth MP noted that the challenges of COVID-19 and natural disasters have highlighted the generous spirit of Australians, and their willingness to help those around them.
“Volunteering is the thread that binds together the Australian spirit. It betters all our communities.”
Those involved in the volunteer sector can use the National Strategy for Volunteering to develop new initiatives or align existing work with those of others in the same
area. They can also refer to the Strategy to make the case for investment and in-kind resourcing to governments, philanthropists, foundations, and other grant-makers.
The Federal Government recently announced $4 million in funding for 37 Volunteering Resource Centres. The Government will also provide $367,000 to Volunteering Australia to coordinate the implementation of the National Volunteering Strategy and $240,000 over the next three years for National Volunteer Week.
The Strategy is available online at: tinyurl. com/SVPvol
Tanya Hall
$22,998 per person
COVID-19 had a particularly devastating impact on the sector, with nearly two million fewer volunteers in 2022 compared to prepandemic levels.
The Strategy includes three main aims. The first focuses on individual potential and the volunteer experience. It seeks to ensure volunteering is safe, inclusive, accessible, meaningful, and not exploitative.
The second aim centres on community and social impact, ensuring that the diversity and impact of volunteering is articulated and celebrated.
Lastly, the Strategy looks to create conditions for volunteering to thrive. This means that the right conditions are in place for volunteering to be both effective and sustainable.

POTENTIAL OLYMPIANS
The Queensland Government has initiated the “You 4 2032” program to identify athletes who may go on to represent Australia in the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.
As a result of this planning, Archery Queensland has received funding to deliver a program to identify young archers who might fit that description. The South Queensland Archery Society was nominated to run a program of recruiting and training young male and female archers who wish to be considered.
Over recent weeks, groups of young archers have been attending training days at one of three participating archery Clubs –Samford Valley Target Archers, Mount Petrie Bowmen or Centenary Archers Club. Most of these young people have no previous experience of archery.
These archers have been guided by coaches qualified by Archery Australia to perform the initial training and assessments. Training has involved all aspects of the sport of archery including preparatory warm-ups, strengthening, mental approach and actual performance on the range.
As a completion of this stage of the “You 4 2032” program, 32 archers competed in a tournament at the Samford Valley Target Archers grounds. The tournament consisted of a ranking round, an individual match play round, and a team match play round.
Australian Olympic archer, Ryan Tyack, and Australian Paralympic Archer, Taymon Kenton-Smith were on hand to offer words of advice to the contestants. (pictured left) The young archers and their support people also listened to a motivational talk by Brooke Hanson, a dual medallist at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Between 10 to 15 archers will go on to enrolment in Archery Australia’s High Performance groups as potential Olympians. This is not the end of the bow for the archers not selected to High Performance training
either. They may join the various local clubs, if not already members, and continue their archery development to as high a level as their commitment will take them.
The dedication of Archery Australia’s coaches at all levels is a given, and the commitment of parents and students in this venture will also be important.

Branching Out From Martial Arts
Adrian Pang is a Samsonvale local and owner of Stafford-based mixed martial arts gym, Integrated MMA. Apart from training people in self-defence, he has also trained a tree to grow into something of a neighbourhood icon.
The Moreton Bay fig first sprouted between building cracks 10 years ago. What was initially seen as a nuisance was then allowed to flourish under Adrian’s hand.
“At first, I used to cut it right back to the stump, yet it would keep growing,” Adrian said.
“After a while I asked my neighbours if they would like it poisoned in case it was intruding into their plumbing or pipe work. They said, they were not worried about it, so I asked if I could start fixing it to their building wall which runs right on the boundary with mine. They said, ‘go ahead’ and the rest is history.”
Bit by bit, Adrian patiently guided the tree’s new growth before and after his training sessions.
“I prune it right back regularly and train its branches to grow along the building wall by using pipe clamps etc. It has now grown into a real spectacle and looks amazing at night as I have solar powered lights all through it,” he said.
Adrian has been competing professionally in MMA since 2001 fighting all over the world. A five-time MMA Champion, he has held Australian, Australasian, Asia Pacific and World titles throughout his career.
“My gym, Integrated MMA, started as a few of us getting together to train for the sport we love and just like the tree it has grown into a successful entity. It is now a full-time business and has been operating since 2003,” Adrian said.
With a number of locals signed up to Adrian’s gym, he ensures that all levels are
catered for, from beginners and kids to professional athletes. Classes are held in a safe and friendly environment.
“I have helped many people in and out of the gym through martial arts and the enjoyment I get seeing other people achieve their goals in and out of the gym inspires me every day. I am incredibly grateful to do what I love every day,” Adrian said.
“If you ever have the chance to visit the laneway to my gym you will see scenic street art on the buildings and it is a nice space to be whether you are Yin or Yang. There is a saying that goes; ‘it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war’, and that resonates with me a lot.”

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
Do you want to have your say?
There are two very important items that are currently open and waiting for you to provide your feedback. As part of the ‘Moreton Says’ series of surveys, where Council asks your views on a variety of topics, the latest survey concentrates on economic growth in the region. Submissions are also being asked in Council’s ‘your say’ platform on the proposed Animal Management Local Law.
The Moreton Says survey focuses on building a strong economy in Moreton Bay, everything from jobs, better access to essential goods and services and more things to do in your local community. Residents are being asked to provide feedback on three topics: growing the Moreton Bay region’s economy; local job creation; and night life in your area. The survey is open until 5pm Wednesday 29 March and you can access it via https://yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov. au/moreton-says, pick up a copy at Council Libraries, Customer Service Centres, or you can call 1300 477 161.
For everyone who enjoys calling Moreton Bay home, the Local Laws are what we live by, and one of the topics that I receive a lot of complaints about is animals. With the diversity of Division 11, it is not just dogs and cats I get calls about, it can be cattle, roosters, ducks, horses and even peacocks. The proposed Animal Management Local Law provides a regulatory framework for keeping animals, the types and numbers allowed, their registration, control of animals, dog off leash areas, animals in public spaces and information around the impounding of animals. There has been a lot of work carried out to produce this proposed local law and I encourage everyone to take some time to read it and make a submission - whether that submission is in favour or not, it is important you have your say. Submissions can be lodged online, via email, by post or in person at one of Council’s customer service centres. To view this proposed local law and to see how to ensure your submission is properly made, go to www.yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au and help shape the future of our region by having your say.

PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING March Matness
Every year in March, Full Studio Pilates instructors worldwide celebrate the wonders of Mat work, coining the phrase “March Matness”.
Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing is joining in this celebration of March Matness on our social pages. Have a look to see how our studio utilises Mat work for those with limited mobility, needing rehabilitation and those athletic bodies who love a challenge and lots of complex movement. We hope you will enjoy the huge variation and adaptability of Pilates Mat work.
Over my many years of instructing Pilates Mat exercises and seeing how, with careful application and increased challenge, over time the deep stabilising muscles are stimulated, improving and maintaining posture and general wellbeing. Ultimately this growth in strength compliments and allows a greater repertoire of exercises to be executed on Reformers or other Pilates large equipment. The large equipment is designed to stimulate the global muscles once the stabilising muscles are stimulated.
From 18th April to 25th June 2023, we will be offering a special Beginners package as a 10 week course. One Mat class and one Reformer class each week offering 20 classes for the cost of 16 classes. OUT & ABOUT
IVORY CURL
When driving through Brisbane suburbs in late summer and autumn, it is impossible to miss the magnificent displays of Ivory Curl (Buckinghamia celsissima) trees along streets and in gardens. Long, pendant spikes up to 27cm long of cream, spidery flowers are produced on the ends of branches.
Individual flowers, densely clustered along the axis, are sweet smelling and full of nectar which attracts birds, bees, butterflies and other insects which in turn attract insect-eating birds. The ovary of each flower develops into a fruit which, when mature, slits open along one side to release up to six small brown seeds. Both the flowers and the fruit are similar to those of the Grevillea, to which this tree is related. Even when not in flower, this is an attractive plant.
The young leaves, which have a bronze tinge and are deeply lobed, mature into an elliptical shape about 20 cm long that is dark green above and lighter below. It
has an attractive, dense, umbrella shape that requires little pruning unless height restriction is required.
The Ivory Curl is indigenous to rainforests of north-eastern Queensland. In its natural habitat, the tree can grow to 30m in order to emerge through the canopy to reach the light needed for flowering. In cultivation, however, the height seems to be determined by climate, reaching about 8m in warmer regions, but decreasing with a drop in temperature so that in Melbourne, it is more
OUT & ABOUT
like a shrub.
Although Ivory Curl tolerates a wide range of soils, it grows best in areas with good drainage that have been supplemented with high levels of compost. It benefits from maintaining moisture levels until established, after which it is dry tolerant.
Ivory Curl will grow in full sun or partial shade but the flowering is limited by high levels of shade. Plants usually flower after 3 years. This species is, however, frost tender when young. Ivory Curl makes a stunning feature plant, can be mass planted as a screen or wind break or as a backdrop to mixed shrub garden beds. It has been used successfully in erosion control and is playground friendly.

As we reported recently, the latest Census showed 140 people aged 85 years and over living in the Samford area.* We thought it would be interesting to share their stories. Get in touch if you or someone you know fits in this awesome age group.
Samford’s urbanisation is relatively recent with a number of older residents remembering rolling hills of dairy farms. Olive Gilbey (nee Rogers) grew up on one such farm in Samford Valley along Mt O’Reilly Rd and Greggs Rd. While many letterboxes line these streets now, they once boasted a 300-acre dairy farm leading over House Mountain. The farm was home to roughly 50 dairy cows which the kids helped milk as soon as they were old enough for school.
“At school, they were all starting to get milking machines. I’d say, ‘Yeah we’ve got milking machines- MDK.’ And they’d say,
‘Haven’t heard of that brand?’ It was, ‘Mum, Dad and the Kids,’” Olive remembers.
Olive was one of eight surviving children lending a hand on the farm, alongside Elsie, Billy, Elfreda, Arnold, Hazel, Peter and Annette. Sleeping arrangements were cosy in their three bedroom house.
“In the mornings, dad would get up with one of the older kids and round the cows up. Mum would make cups of tea or hot cocoa and we’d all go down to help do the milking. So we all had a cup of tea and something to eat down the dairy and it was a nice start to the day.”
It would take two hours to hand milk all of the cows and clean up afterwards. Olive’s dad was in charge of feeding while her mum would quickly work down one row of cows. The kids sat on stools or logs to work along an opposite row.
“By the time dad finished feeding them all, we’d be finished milking them all!” Olive said.
The cold weather was no impediment to this daily routine.
“We didn’t even worry about winter. You just rugged up; sometimes you’d go to bed at night with our clothes on ready to get up next morning because it was too cold to get dressed. Milking the cow, you’d put your nose against it and that was nice and warm.”
In the early days the family would separate the milk and cream which would go on a train to the Kingston butter factory.
“It was a lot of work to separate the milk and we always had pigs and chooks for the sour milk,” Olive said.
This would become a practice of the past when just a few years later, the farm’s
milk would only need to be strained and put into cans ready for collection. Without refrigeration widely available, this process would happen twice a day, just before the milk truck was due.
Anyone on the other side of the process wanting to buy milk would similarly wait for the milkman who would tip out a small amount into each person’s billy cans.
Olive and her siblings attended Samford State School, riding horses to and from their classrooms. They made use of an old crossing across the road from today’s Gleam O’Dawn store, with up to five kids on the one horse.
“One day on that crossing a bee stung the horse, so we all fell off. Falling off was nothing, that’s all part of riding,” Olive said.
While today’s life is very different to the era Olive describes, the after school grocery run is one errand enduring the test of time.
“We used to pick up bread after school. We’d ride down with a chaff bag over the horse, so it was saddled both sides with a split in the middle. We’d put three loaves on this side and three on the other. The baker was so good, the boys would come out and help us get it on the horse. Then we’d call in and pick up some meat at the butcher.”
In her 92 years, Olive has seen significant local development including the Samford Grove Retirement Village where she currently resides. It is fittingly built on the site of an old dairy farm.

FRIDAYS AT THE SCHUB
St Patrick’s Day, first celebrated in Australia in 1795, has remained a day of fun and frolic for those of Irish descent and those who love the eccentric Irishness of the day.
At the SCHUB on St Paddy’s Day, we’ll have a bit of Irish fun, though I can’t promise a green cake. Come and join our Cuppa and Chat with a bit of Irish fun from 2.30pm.

They have brought up children in the fabulous fifties and the counterculture of the sixties, they witnessed the incursion of television, computers and social media, the acceptance of First Nations’ people as citizens, and the abolishment of “the White Australia” policy. Change has been the cog of their lives. What values did they cling to? What messages have they got for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren?
Jenni’s Good Stuff Ideas Forum follows on 31st March with a discussion of the many connotations of “Honour”.

YOUNG STARS TO GO 7/11
School is well and truly back and it’s an opportunity to contemplate how our youngsters can be climate smart ‘Young Stars’. Teachers in the Valley are already contemplating garden projects and the Samford Edible Garden Trail is on the way in May. Yet being a climate smart Young Star is not all about gardening.
The Green Kids Badge checklist that is seeable at www.greenstreet.net.au/badges gives some good starter guidance for our Young Stars who can get themselves an online Green Street Badge if they do 7 or more of these 11:
• Switch off game machines, computers and other electrical appliances at the wall when not in use.
• Turn off lights when not in use.
• Shower for four minutes or less.
• Recycle everything possible.
• Walk or cycle to school and friends places when it is safe to do so.
• Help grow vegetables and fruit at home or at school or in a community garden.
• Turn off taps when brushing teeth.
• Turn off the taps when washing hair.
• Eat healthy foods the great majority of the time.
• Wear sustainably produced clothing.
• Minimise the purchase of toys and other ‘stuff’.
Sure there’s a few habit changes that may be needed by some of us, but could be fun to have a go at getting 7 out of 11.
If you think of another item to go on the list, just send to info@greenstreet.net.au or call 0407 190 162.

As the Library continues to gather all the main collection of books into one place, much is also happening on other fronts.
The Samford Valley Community Church Car Boot Sale is on Saturday 18th March from 7:00am to noon. The Library trailer and tables will have a major presence once again with lots and lots of used books both old and more recent, suited to all ages. Lots of children’s toys and games will be available, along with a large variety of jigsaw puzzles for all ages (all puzzles have been checked to be 100% complete). Some very good quality bric a bric will also be on display.
Check out a variety of art and drawing books and educational books in readiness for school holiday activities.
Speaking of trailers, once again much appreciation and thanks go to the Gambling Community Benefit fund for approving the Library application to fit a canopy to the trailer. Volunteers and visitors will soon have much more shade, as will the books, which have been subjected to full sun on sale days. Complete with the generator donated by the SDPPA, the trailer is about to become a very special unit!
In other news, the Library website is currently in the process of being re-vamped with two new volunteers working on this project under guidance from the committee.
As an end result is humanising the website, the aim is for visitors to feel the community presence.
After our catering gig at the Native Plants Qld Annual Sale at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 1st April, the Library volunteers will take a short and well earned breather.
Evening events are also planned in the near future.
Check out the article on page 8 about
long term volunteer Ray Vuillermin, who is in charge of the Library Military/Transport section with a focus on Aviation History.
Samford Golden Valley Pony Club
The cross county course building is well underway and will hopefully be finished soon at the SGVPC. The grant received last year from Nikki Boyd MP for the cross country course and moveable jumps, has allowed the club to purchase and move forward with renovating and updating the cross country jump section of the club grounds. After the floods in 2022, many jumps were damaged and ruined. This new area will enable riders to train their horses, along with the club being able to hold some more cross country and derby events.
Claire has been out competing. At the Mt Delaneys recent sporting gymkhana, she came home with lots of ribbons and a trophy on her pony Tansy. Fabulous work. March Musters - 12th and 26th. All welcome.

A MEAT-Y RECIPE
YAJAMBEE
FARM BRINGS THE BEEF TO YOUR DOOR
Jamie, Gabe and their little helpers are a young family working and living on an Angus stud on beautiful Mount Mee. They are passionate producers of grass-fed beef that is sustainable, ethical, regenerative and local and they sell their beef direct to your family from their farm, offering a true paddock to plate experience. They have recently launched a website www. yajambeefarms.com to simplify their ordering process and have also shared this delicious recipe with us.
CHEESY BAKED MEATBALLS
INGREDIENTS
MEATBALLS
2 x packets of Yajambee mince (1kg)
1 large onion finely chopped
3 garlic cloves crushed
3 slices white bread crusts removed, soaked in ½ cup milk
handful fresh parsley finely chopped
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 teaspoon freshly cracked pepper
2-3 teaspoons salt to taste
TOMATO SAUCE
1 onion finely chopped
4 garlic cloves crushed
800g chopped tomatoes (or 2 tins of crushed tomatoes)
2 teaspoons tomato paste
1 cup beef stock
5 fresh thyme sprigs
1 sprig fresh rosemary
2 teaspoons sugar
salt & pepper to taste
TO FINISH
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
fresh basil leaves
griddled ciabatta
METHOD
Pre heat the oven to 200°C.
To make the meatballs, fry the onion and garlic in a splash of olive oil until soft and fragrant. Allow to cool. Place the beef and onion mixture in a large bowl. Squeeze the soaked bread slices to get rid of any excess milk and add to the meat. Add the herbs salt and pepper then mix well.
Heat a large, oven-proof pan. Form golfball sized meatballs and brown all over. Remove and set aside.
To make the tomato sauce: add a splash of oil to the pan you used for the meatballs then fry the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, beef stock, herbs, sugar and seasoning and allow to simmer, uncovered, for approximately 10 minutes or until the sauce has reduced by a quarter.
Place the meatballs back into the sauce then place the pan into the oven. Bake for
10 minutes then remove from the oven and top with the cheeses. Place the pan back in the oven until the cheese melts. Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil. Serve with grilled slices of ciabatta.

CROOKHAVEN: SCHOOL FOR THIEVES J.J. Arcanjo
This is a book about the place where people are taught to con the bad and give back to the innocent. This is the story of a young boy by the name of Gabriel Avery, being invited in an unusual way, to attend Crookhaven: school for thieves, swindlers and wrongdoers. He is accompanied by
young Penelope, a girl skilled in crookery, creativity and deception, who, at first, holds a quite hostile relationship with Gabriel. The story falls under the genres of mystery, adventure and friendships. I would recommend this book, as it is captivating, relatable, and an overall page-turner. This novel is great for readers of the Magic Misfits series. would recommend this book for ages 9-14 or for relatively strong readers.

SPICE ROAD
Maiya Ibrahim
This is a thrilling and nail-biting adventure that follows a girl searching for her lost brother through the Arabian inspired land. The author has a unique sense of description and storytelling which lifts this book from others. Every chapter had a page-turning twist but none as unpredictable as the last. Spice Road is a must read for any book lover, which is why I’m giving it a 5/5 stars.

THE BOOKSELLER’S APPRENTICE Amelia Mellor
(prequel to The Grandest Bookshop in the World)
The author of this book, Amelia Mellor, did a great job in writing this story. I would recommend it for ages 11 years and up and advanced readers. In general, this book is about a young boy who gets a job working for an eccentric man called Mr Cole.
This is a good book for those that like exciting reads. The story flowed well, was quite easy to follow, and made me want to keep reading through the whole book. The story had a happy ending and as soon as I finished reading, I wanted to start reading a second. I liked the characters, as each one was different and displayed different emotions. In this book, the characters are very well described, making the story easy to picture. The books falls under the genres of adventure with a little mystery and magic. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.

MANAGING ENDOMETRIOSIS
March is recognised as Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about a chronic and debilitating disease that affects an estimated 1 in 10 women worldwide. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, grows outside of it, causing pain, infertility and other health issues.
One effective approach to managing endometriosis-related pain and discomfort is pelvic floor and women’s health physiotherapy. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialised form of physical therapy that focuses on the pelvic floor muscles and their surrounding structures. Women’s health

physiotherapists can work with patients to develop a personalised treatment plan to help manage their pain and improve function.
For women with endometriosis, pelvic floor physiotherapy can be particularly beneficial in reducing pain during intercourse, pelvic pain and improving bladder and bowel function. It can also be used as part of a holistic approach to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
This Endometriosis Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that there are effective treatments available for those living with this condition. Pelvic floor and women’s health physiotherapy can be a valuable part of that treatment plan. If you are struggling with endometriosis-related pain or discomfort, talk to your healthcare provider about whether pelvic floor physiotherapy might be right for you. Here at The Movement Team, I am the Women’s Health Physiotherapy and would love to help you on your journey.

Youth Crime
In the first parliamentary sitting week of 2023, the Palaszczuk Government introduced key Youth Justice Reforms.
The reforms include:
• Increasing the maximum penalty for stealing a car from 7 years to 10 years’ imprisonment.
• A more severe penalty of 14 years
if the offence is committed at night, where the offender uses violence or threatens violence, is armed or pretends to be armed, is in company, or damages or threatens to damage any property.
• Amend the Youth Justice Act requiring courts to take into account previous bail history, criminal activity and track record when sentencing.
• Increased penalties for criminals who have boasted about these crimes on social media.
• Extreme High Visibility Police Patrols.
• A $9.89 million fast-track sentencing program in Brisbane, Townsville, Southport and Cairns so children spend less time on remand and more time serving their sentences.
• The construction of two new youth detention centres.
• A trial of engine immobilisers in Mt Isa, Cairns and Townsville.
• The appointment within QPS of Assistant Commissioner to the position of Youth Crime Taskforce Commander.
• The increased penalties apply to adult as well as juvenile offenders.
Young offenders will be in custody for longer to make sure they can complete requisite rehabilitation and reform programs set out by the courts. It will be harder for serious repeat offenders to get bail and there will be even more investment in tackling the complex causes of youth crime. The tough new laws and increased investment follows careful consideration and are based in evidence and follow feedback from the community, police and other stakeholders.
Please reach out to my office if you have any questions or enquires - 3448 3100 or pine.rivers@parliament.qld.gov.au.

A SELECTION OF PROPERTIES BY LEIGH
"Leigh had to work really hard for us to secure the sale of our property in a specified timeframe. She stayed very close, provided awesome communication throughout and remained calm and professional whilst supportive and helpful! We really appreciated Leigh's no-nonsense approach, honesty and sense of humour too! Having been a purchaser and a vendor with Leigh now we highly recommend her for both. Thanks Leigh for everything!"
