It was a packed Samford Community Hub on Wednesday 1 May when the SDPPA hosted a community meeting after numerous concerns were raised about the recent Land Valuation notifications.
More than 95 residents attended the meeting to hear from SDPPA President Leah Hudson and Closeburn resident Neil Murphy from Savills Australia, as they addressed community concerns about inaccurate statutory land valuations and unrealistic increases.
Councillor Darren Grimwade was invited to assist with understanding how this will affect our rates and Neil, a passionate local valuer and specialist in statutory land valuations, assisted attendees with how to object to their valuations if required.
After a comprehensive presentation, Leah Hudson reiterated the importance of individual property owners submitting an objection on their own behalf in order to seek a review of their valuation. The SDPPA is unable to request or lobby for a bulk review of the area despite attempts to do so with the Valuer General.
Most homeowners were concerned about an increase to
an overview of the relationship between Qld Government land valuations and City of Moreton Bay rates (COMB). He confirmed that land valuations do not specifically dictate the rates set by the COMB, they are just one part of the equation. Rates increases are currently capped at 9% and there have been no increases to rates for three years. The assessment methodology uses inflation as the starting point. Land valuation increases are then considered, and where land valuations in our area have risen by 35% for example, residents can expect a rate increase on average of 5 or 6% in the next financial year.
Where they have increased above this average, residents can expect their rates will increase up to the capped amount of 9%. An increase to 200% is likely to receive a 9% rate increase applied. Cr Grimwade said that flood affected properties have no rating category applied because the land
value is likely to be less than the average non-floodable land.
Please be aware that objections concerning current land valuations are not processed through the COMB. It was also noted that there could be potential land tax implications for inaccurate valuations for investment property and commercial property owners.
Neil Murphy informed the meeting that objections to land valuations across Queensland need to be lodged through the QLD Government Department of Environment, Land and Water by 27 May 2024. He said valuations are used for rates but are not a determinant of a property’s market value. Neil provided information that may support an objection to the current land valuation, such as considering if your property has an environmental overlay on it (such as fire), comparing your property to others of like description that have sold in your area, what area of your property is useable, and are there restrictions to what you can use your land for.
The SDPPA presentation included tools, information and documents to assist owners to make an objection. These are available on the website. https://samfordprogress.org.

Thumbs up for sustainability at the pub
There was quite a crowd at the Samford Pub recently when the latest and greatest about what’s going on sustainability-wise in the region was on display. Nine enterprises presented their pitch while the crowd ate pizzas and soaked in the presentations which ranged from the technical to the practical to the aesthetic to the amazing.
And of course, Samford’s own Green Street was part of the program with Carolyn King showing how businesses can ‘do well and do good.’
The Council’s innovation arm, Innovate Moreton Bay, organised the event and the night heard about what locals are doing or planning to do, with Green Street showcasing local businesses including 3D, Variety Store, Long Yard Larder, Kakadu Organics and Promotion Products. Recently arrived Samfordites, Arkes4, presented

Our band of merry singers is growing. Last Monday, Samford Community Singers had a very good turnout of members, especially our baritones and tenors, providing us with a richer, more full-bodied sound. We would love more singers to join us to share in the joy and companionship that singing together brings. All ages and experience levels are welcomed. We are also expanding our repertoire of songs in preparation for a number of concerts planned for later this year.
We would love you to join us every Monday evening from 7pm -9pm at Farmers Hall. First two rehearsals are free. $150 per term will all music provided.

Moreton Bay.
BIG SUPPORT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
May is Queensland Small Business Month, celebrating and supporting the many people who have put everything into their small businesses to serve a need in their local community. These businesses make a significant contribution to City of Moreton Bay’s $20 billion economy, which grew 4 per cent from the previous year.
Apart from making a financial contribution to the region’s budget, small businesses give back to the local community in a range of ways. Craig Doyle Real Estate is one local business taking great pride in its commitment to community activities, which also provides staff with a deep understanding of the area.
“The majority of our employees hail from the Dayboro and Samford area, embodying our belief that a deep connection to and passion for the area, are essential in effectively showcasing its finest attributes to prospective buyers and tenants,” General Manager, Sally-Ann Klein, said.
“Keeping it local ensures our team possesses an intimate understanding and appreciation of the unique characteristics that make our community special. There are quite a few of us that were born and bred in the area.”
Craig Doyle Real Estate also supports many local events, sporting clubs and associations including Christmas on Main Street, Samford State School carnivals,
Dayboro Day, Dayboro & Samford shows and Dayboro Rodeo.
Relationships are key to small business growth, which can be seen in the high-level of customer service many small businesses pride themselves on.
Becky Downey runs Digitalo, specalising in web design and digital services. By operating locally, she offers long-term, reliable support in an industry becoming largely serviced by online bots.
“In these days of AI and faceless online companies, nothing beats being able to meet someone to discuss what you want. I care about my customers’ business/ organisation, and understanding of what they need,” Becky said.
“Being onsite means I can create better, more effective solutions as I have local knowledge. My local reputation matters to me, and I do my utmost to help my clients succeed online.”
“I refer locals to other locals, I help without charge where I can for goodwill, I buy from businesses I work with and I’ve made good friends,” she said.
Similarly, using a local trade service rather than a larger commercial one means that quality service and local connections are a priority.
“We rely on repeat business and referrals in the local area to keep us busy, so we have
to provide the best service that we can,” Samford Valley Plumbing Service owner, Carey Haden said.
“Often our work will require input from other trades, and we know a whole network of great local tradies who can help us to get the jobs done.”
There is also a genuine appreciation for this area from local small businesses that shines strong in each interaction with them.
“We love the pride the locals have in the area and their properties. Samford has a lot to be proud of and is home to many masters of their craft. We have amazing artists, culinary geniuses, musicians, medical professionals, sportspersons, people that build all sorts of things and people that volunteer their time to the community. The valley is a beautiful place that we are all lucky to call home,” Carey said.

Bushcare
Thankfully, based on the lunchtime radar images, we ignored BoM’s dire forecast for the afternoon of Sunday 5 May and went ahead with our monthly working bee, which was a week early to avoid clashing with Mother’s Day. The several volunteers who turned up were rewarded with blue skies and perfect temperatures. The group included a welcome contribution from the SDPPA (Bob B and Amanda) and a new volunteer (welcome Hugh). The main task was to continue weeding the riverbank rainforest planting P4 below the power pole. Some of the Guinea Grass was well over 1 metre tall and beginning to seed, plus there was plenty of ‘Trad’ (Tradescantia fluminensis) , ‘Glycine’ ( Neonotonia wightii), Siratro (Macroptilium atropureum) and Creeping Inch Weed (Callisia repens), plus the occasional Dutchman’s Pipe Vine (Aristolochia elegans).
The good news is that, as well as the weeds, there is already plenty of natural regeneration of young native plants among our plantings. These include Silky Oak ( Grevillea robusta ), Native Mulberry ( Pipturus argenteus) , Love
Flower (Pseuderanthemum variabile) and Macaranga (M. tanarius). These are our other very welcome ‘volunteers’. Our local weed expert, Lesley, continued her great work in rainforest zone P1, dealing mainly with Madeira Vine (Anredera cordifolia) and Creeping Inch Weed. After the 2-hour session most volunteers wandered down to the picnic table where Karen from the SDPPA was waiting with a well-earned afternoon tea. Thanks to everyone who contributed to another successful afternoon. Our next bushcare session will be from 2pm to 4pm, Sunday 9 June.

FRIDAY AT THE SCHUB Mothering
By the time you read this we will have had Mother’s Day, a wonderful and welldeserved celebration of the special women in our lives. But mothering is not limited to one day or one gender or even one species. It is universal. Mothering is about being caring, protective and kind.
We see it every day: the young boy who sweeps up his wailing little brother when he falls; the gentle woman in Drakes who just seems to know if a customer needs a kind word or an ear; the vet who changes her schedule to fit in a much loved old dog who needs pain relief; the firies who leave their homes to go to an accident in the dead of night; the dogs who faithfully follow their owners, often sitting snout on lap when their humans feel down; the horse who nuzzles his owner’s hand before he eats, the people, like those in the CCC, SSN, Meals on Wheels and Crafting Kindness who give so much to make others’ lives better.
Mothering is something we should do every day. It enriches our world, makes us and those we mother feel better. Come to the SCHUB on a Friday afternoon and join those who love mothering. Coffee, tea, cake, chat and cheek available. $2 covers costs.
Friday 17th: Crafting Kindness - into winter knitting and crochet for those in need.
Friday 24th: Guest speaker (watch FB) Friday 31st: Good Stuff Ideas Forum discussion about MOTHERING.

Deciding What to Grow
It’s no secret that growing your own produce has enormous benefits for one’s health and wellbeing, whether that’s from spending time out in the fresh air or snacking on something you grew organically.
The 5th annual Samford Edible Garden Trail is here this weekend (18 & 19 May) and, once it’s over, we hope to hear that lots of freshly-inspired postcode 4520 residents are diving in to prepping spaces in their yard to grow some of their own fruit or veg. Maybe even both.
Autumn and winter is a great time to get that underway, as we don’t have summer’s blazing sun to contend with, and so we can spend longer outdoors without risk of heat or sunstroke cutting our gardening endeavours short.
Once you have your chosen site ready –be it a raised bed, wicking bed, or straight in the ground -- the real fun begins. A common quandary that beginner food gardeners can find themselves facing, and a question that many online growing forums are peppered with posts posing, is “what should I grow?”. It’s a question only you can answer and a good way to approach it is to ask yourself:
• What do I like to eat?
• What plants grow well in my climate zone?
• What do I resent spending money on because I buy a lot of it? And,
• What is expensive to buy but not difficult to grow (or is very productive)?
You could also grow something mainly for its novelty value (eg, purple cauliflower, an unusual type of pumpkin, or rainbow corn), particularly if you are hoping to get young gardeners involved. That will give you a good starting point and should result
in you tending your crops without it feeling like a chore because:
• You can’t wait to harvest what you’re growing!
• You chose appropriate seeds/ plants for your climate, so they are flourishing; and
• You are looking forward to sharing your newfound knowledge and plentiful pickings with family and friends.
The joy and taste of home-grown is hard to beat, and comes with the added buzz of being able to say “I grew that myself!”.
We hope to see you at the Trail!

STRONGER THROUGH HER STORY
Local activist Deb Aldrick not only inspires through speaking and raising money for childhood abuse survivors, she can also add ‘author’ to her incredible list of achievements with her book Circling The Wagons now available across the globe, and closer to home at Baffies Oan Books in the Lifestyle Centre.
Written as a guide for other adult survivors or their loved ones to receive help and healing, Circling The Wagons casts off the shame and guilt felt from something that was never a child’s fault.
The book offers a first-hand account of an adult survivor’s struggles to reclaim her life after dealing with childhood sexual abuse hidden within a family environment. It delivers a raw and honest look into the devastating effects of hidden childhood sexual abuse and explores the process survivors experience in their healing journey.
“Publishing a book such as this, is bittersweet,” Deb said.
“It is not something anyone should ever have to write about, and no one ever wants to live through these kinds of circumstances or have to pull away from family members that they grew up with.”
“But what I will say is the confidence I have gained from finally standing up and saying this was not my fault in anyway, and that I will no longer put myself last for the ‘sake of appearances’ in my family, has been very empowering. I feel as though I have finally found the person I should have been
and taken back my power at last.”
Deb shares what helped her healing process in Circling The Wagons, including the importance of other people’s capacity to listen and be present for those brave enough to speak up.
“I would like to let everyone out there who has suffered similar abuse within a family know that they are not alone, and
that they weren’t to blame anyway! My book can also help friends and family members understand their abused loved one’s toxic behaviours, or to let anyone know what red flags to look out for with changes in their own children’s behaviours from abuse,” Deb said.
JOIN THE MARCH
Not content to rest after the phenomenal achievement of publishing her book, Deb continues advocating for others still living in silence, and will be speaking at the upcoming Moreton Bay Says No To Violence march on Friday 31st May at Redcliffe.
Now in its 16th year, the Moreton Bay Says No To Violence walk brings the Moreton Bay community together to stand up, speak out, and walk together against family and domestic violence.
Organised by Encircle Community Services, the free event begins at 8.30am on 31 May, with attendees walking along Redcliffe Parade (700 metres), continuing along the waterfront and down the ANZAC Avenue access road to the Redcliffe Settlement Cove Amphitheatre.

ANZAC DAY AT THE MUSEUM
An amazing day, perfect weather, and an extraordinary amount of visitors to view the many displays. The Australian and New Zealand flags flying in unison and at half mast certainly brought home the significance of Anzac Day. That is a first for the museum.
Numerous children were all very eager to join in on the Kids Quiz and receive their prize of a pre-decimal war-era coin or a packet of chips. Military uniforms were on display and the young liked to investigate, check out, and try them. Likewise, a volunteer and former Vietnam soldier proudly displayed his collection. The blacksmith was kept engaged in sharing his skills of the trade with families, making rings, bangles and Anzac poppies.
The refreshment went down like a treat. People were eager to try the sausage sizzle, onions and bread. Pie with mushy peas and the pea and ham soup, “sold like hot cakes,” as the saying goes. As for Anzac biscuits, there is never any problem selling them. Of course, what would the day be like if we never sold tea, coffee, drinks or water. The damper and syrup with billy tea is always a fast seller, a very popular food, always recognised as Australia Day and Anzac Day treats, and enjoyed by many.
Upstairs was certainly very busy with people eager to search out wartime and family history, with one or the other of our volunteers assisting in that particular area. History was accessible, and general information was found on the huge, convenient display throughout the room. Our main display was paying homage to our local women who worked hard to help and
“do their bit” wherever they were required. I was informed the old Grovely Railway Station, now War Memories, was well attended by the public. Visiting the Provisional School, students and the younger generation were eager to see how children of around 1872 and later learned their lessons. It’s totally different from today’s way of educating.
Ferny Grove Station is another example of the interest shown in the recorded history of the horrific train crash at Camp Mountain on May Day in 1947. Sadly, many passengers did not survive and multiple people were injured. A few of our volunteers still with us, sadly have, to this day, horrendous recalls when the subject arises.
I must commend and thank the Events Committee of six volunteers who eagerly researched over many weeks of preparation and who helped put this very special day together. And of course, the many members who assisted in the lead up to the day and on the day. Members who donated food and plants were very much appreciated. Thank you. I will say, I bet a lot of them slept well that night. I know I did.

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Diggers!
When he turned 9½ in England, he was introduced to his step-aunt’s family friend: 19-year-old Mick Jagger. As soon as Mick was alone at the table, our cheeky young Beatles fan skipped around the room, singing, “We love you Beatles, Oh yes we do! We love you Beatles, Yes it’s true!” in an unbroken voice while desperately avoiding eye contact, and then quickly ran off. Rumour has it that to this day Mick is still on the hunt for that snotty-nosed kid who couldn’t sing for nuts but could run really fast.
Diggers is the first to admit he was only just above average at school stuff like physics, chem, maths, English and football, but reckons his favourite subjects were running fast and chatting up girls, not necessarily in that order. Then he magically morphed into an Atomic Energy Commission physicist, an industrial chemist, maths tutor, fiction writer, and in 2001
coached the Samford Rangers under-11s to the silver medal. Still can’t sing for nuts though. He claims his life challenges have taught him 3 key Mantras. There’s Mantra Number 3: Nothing Is Forever, and Mantra Number 2: Never Give Up. Unfortunately he can’t remember Mantra Number 1. He hopes it wasn’t too important.
Courtesy of the 5th attempt at IVF, back in the days when the chance of success each time was less than 5%, he and his lovely wife were eventually blessed with girl-boy twins
in 1990 – an instant family. Their hopes of becoming instant grandparents is taking way longer than expected, though. Did somebody say “Mantra Number 2!”?
At SAMS, he makes the best chilli sauce for Guest Speaker Nights, and tries his best to wrangle Friday Afternoon Gabfests, Containers For Change, and the Walking Group. You may have spotted the Walkers blissfully wandering around Highvale on Tuesday mornings, brushing up their skills at Cyclist Greeting 101, Plover Duck&-Cover, and Land Mine Detection AKA Barker’s Nest Sidestep.
Occasionally they return with less or more Walkers than they started with, adding a rich element of mystique and excitement to the otherwise masochistic exercise thing. Keep it up, lads, and when all else fails, blame Diggers, and quote Mantra Number 3!

OUT & ABOUT
OUT & ABOUT
We are thrilled to announce Samford & Districts Playgroup has returned to opening 5 days a week! A new committee of parent volunteers ambitiously started 2024 with the goal of returning Playgroup to it’s former glory of being open every weekday. We believe it is essential for local parents and carers to have access to a welcoming, safe and low-cost environment for their children to play and for adults to find community, purpose and friendship. We are extremely proud to be able to offer this to our community by Term 2.
Playgroup is open to all parents and carers of 0-5 year olds, with the exception of the Wednesday babies session which is limited to 0-12month olds. We have plenty of indoor and outdoor space for the kids to explore, age appropriate toys and equipment, as well as tea, coffee and company for the adults. No prior registration or booking is needed, just drop in!
Opening Hours:
Monday and Tuesday 9:30am - 11:30am, Wednesday (babies) 9:30am - 11:30am, Thursday 9:30am - 11:30am, and Friday 3pm - 5pm.
We are located at the RSL Memorial Gardens, corner of Progress Street and Main Street (enter via car park in Progress Street.)
Recent Activities
Our Term 1 Working Bee brunch saw the relocation and refresh of the sandpit (an instant hit with the littlies!), rejuvenation
of gardens and thorough clean out of the indoor toys and space. Thank you to Mooey’s Samford for enabling this work with their generous donation of sand and mulch.
Term 1 concluded with a pizza night hosted in collaboration with our neighbours Village Pizza. The kids thoroughly enjoyed an easter egg hunt, messy play and crafts, while the adults were able to form new connections and have a relaxing night with dinner sorted!
We were honoured to march behind the Playgroup banner this year in the Samford ANZAC Day march at the Avenue of Honour. The kids did remarkably well considering the distance their little legs covered. In the week before ANZAC Day, the children enjoyed making and painting poppy wreaths, which fostered conversation about the ANZACs and the importance of remembering them.
Our Term 2 Working Bee brunch will be held on 16 June, 8:30am - 11:00am. All welcome!!

Samford Bowls Club
WINNERS ARE GRINNERS
We won the K.M.Smith Cup competition! As reported in the last edition of The Village Pump, Samford was to play in the final against Everton Park Bowls Club team at Northern Suburbs Bowls Club Saturday 27th April. Samford won 2 of the 3 rinks to bring home the trophy. Pairs won 27 to 17. Triples 32 to 11. Fours defeated by 20 to 24. Total score Samford 79 Everton Park 52. Thank you to all the organisers, managers and selectors.
Men’s Champion of Champions Pairs final was played Saturday 4th. This was a tight scoring game where either team could have won. Club members watched on with everyone staying until the last bowl had been played. Congratulations to Alan Clark and Peter Wilson for their win against Ian Edmondson and Bill Evans. Score 21 to 20. Other club competitions are progressing. Marilyn Slawson and Glenda Baldock played their first game of ‘Consistency’ on Wednesday 8th May. This is a game which, as the name suggests, is for the bowler to be consistent. Points are awarded for the bowls closest to the Jack without moving the Jack more than the approved distance as measured with a stick. Moving the Jack more than this distance will incur a loss of 10 points. First to reach 100 points is the winner.
In our process of applying for grants to assist in the restoration of our club we reached out to members of the community that are regular users of our facilities for
some words of support. We were grateful and inspired with their kind responses, some extracts below.
A Thursday night Village Bowls player of many years who is one of the regulars bringing along his many mates wrote in part: ‘I cannot think of a sporting club in our community that needs as much help as the Samford District Bowls Club, since recent weather events, which is a club that is the backbone for some of our oldest community members and those most in need of community grants and corporate assistance.’
The Samford Mahjong Club: Samford Bowls Club has supported the Samford Mahjong Club for the last three and a half years by providing access to their facilities two afternoons per week for four hours. These facilities have proved invaluable in providing a safe, friendly, and suitable environment for up to twenty-four players. The club provides a welcoming atmosphere, disability friendly access and parking to encourage our membership to grow.

Super savings for women
Ask any woman juggling career, home and family and she’ll tell you it’s a hard slog. Yet as retirement looms, dreams of enjoying the rewards of all that work are shattered as the retirement savings don’t support the vision.
According to an inquiry into Women’s Economic Security in Retirement entitled “A husband is not a retirement plan: Achieving economic security for women in retirement”, on average, women retire with approximately half the retirement savings as men. The inquiry also found that the majority of Australians on the age pension are women. Of that number, the majority are single, meaning that these women are struggling alone on an income that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines as poverty.
What about super?
It’s a double-whammy for women whose careers were interrupted to raise children, but unfortunately, time off work means there’s less money being contributed to the super pie.

A WINNING SERVE
Local teenager Veronica Tucker is on the attack of a burgeoning volleyball career after taking part in the Australian institute of sport (AIS) Volleyball Selection Camp in Canberra. A select few from the camp will go on to represent Australia in the Under 18s Asian championships in Thailand later this year.
At just 15 years old, Veronica was amongst the youngest of the camp’s participants, comprising the top 41 promising volleyballers nation-wide. Participants lived and breathed volleyball at five-hour training sessions each day, broken up in two sessions.
“Training was really high intensity and quality, and I am so grateful to have gotten to play with such incredible athletes,” Veronica said.
Assessments at Samford Psychology
“We had a recovery session every day where we would stretch, use the heated and cold pools, and compression boots.”
Volleyroos captain Mikaela Stevens and Australian Volleyball Academy athlete Kayla Cantrill were on hand to both inspire and assist participants.
Veronica took up volleyball when she was 13, quickly becoming a hit at the sport. She currently plays with The Gap Dragons Volleyball Club. After receiving a training scholarship for the Queensland Academy of Sport, Veronica can also be found jumpserving at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre.
The swift speed and team-nature of the sport particularly appeal to her.
“I love working as a team to reach a common goal. I love the fast pace of volleyball and especially that feeling of being in the air and seeing that gap on the floor just out of reach of the blockers’ hands, then watching the ball bounce off the floor after you hit it. Or running, diving, and getting the ball just high enough to keep the play alive,” she said.
“I want to take the sport as far as I can; I would love to represent Australia one day.”

Moreton Money Launches Digital Gift Card
City of Moreton Bay, in partnership with local business groups, is calling for the community to support local businesses by choosing a Moreton Money gift card for their next gift. With the recent introduction of digital gift cards, purchasing and using these cards has never been easier.
Moreton Money is an initiative that encourages the community to make the active choice to support their local businesses and consider changing their spending habits.
Samford Psychology is accepting clients for comprehensive ADHD, learning disorders and cognitive assessments with our provisional psychologists for children 6+, adolescents and adults. To find out more information about our assessment services give us a call today.
Samford Psychology, supporting Samford since 2012.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the cards can now be used like a normal EFTPOS card, making it easier for the community to spend their money how they want, and where they want.
“Moreton Money gift cards now directly download to the mobile digital wallet, meaning supporting a local business is just a tap of the phone away,” he said.
“Small businesses, which are the backbone of the Moreton Bay economy, have been doing it tough in recent years with flood events, COVID-19 and skyrocketing costs across the board. Instead of filling the pockets of huge corporations that are recording massive profits, I urge our community to think locally first. Purchasing a Moreton Money gift card makes a real difference to locals and the success of our small businesses.”
Moreton Money provides a wide variety of options for recipients to use their gift card in businesses and stores across Moreton Bay, spanning various industries and geographical areas. There are hundreds of businesses already registered, and more coming online daily.
Back a local business and our whole community benefits with every $100 spent locally, generating around $180 of economic impact.
Moreton Money is part of Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), a blueprint for a bigger, bolder, and brighter economy which will ultimately create 100,000 new jobs in Moreton Bay through to 2041.

Samford Live news
With our autumn season wrapped up, Samford Live has decided to take a short break over the next couple of months. Since beginning in March last year, we have proudly presented over a dozen concerts in collaboration with the fabulous team at Little Tree Bake and Brewhouse. It has been a thrill to invite talented artists at the top of their game to perform for our community. And the response has been tremendous. Over 1,500 people have gathered to enjoy fine music, socialise, and participate in a shared space often inspiring and always entertaining.
2023 was an energising year. We came out of the pandemic with enthusiasm and an appetite to gather, connect and engage in all manner of activities.
2024 however has been different. Times are harder now for many, and we have noticed it too. While our audiences continue to enjoy our shows, they are not coming out in the same numbers. So, we have decided not to proceed with our planned Samford Farmers Hall winter season. We’d have to fill
the hall for this series to work, and in the current economic climate this is unlikely. However, our team remain enthusiastic about bringing live music to our community, and we’ll be back. There’s a concert and workshop with a favourite personality returning, and from spring another series on the drawing board.
We’d also love to perform in the characterful Farmers Hall when the time is right.
Samford Live was born to add cultural richness to our community, to foster engagement, and to share the joy of live music. We have been proud and privileged to fulfill that vision and make our small contribution.
I’d like to thank the many people who make this happen. Our Organising Group and Committee of skilled professional musicians have freely and generously given their time. As have our group of volunteers who welcome our audiences at every show. Thanks also to Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association, who enabled the birth of Samford Live in the first place.
Stay tuned for info at: www.samfordlive.au
Samford Live Inc. is a non-profit group led by local musicians and a producer. We thank our community for your support, enabling us to offer great music in Samford.

WINTER EDIBLE GARDEN TIPS
Cooler weather is creeping up on us into our beautiful late Autumn climate. You may have noticed your vegetables, herbs and fruit trees breathing a sigh of relief. Our wet season seems to have extended but at least the rainfall is now light which is great for many crops, so long as there is sufficient sunshine and good drainage in your food growing spaces. Here are my 6 tips for your winter food garden:
• Since the sun dips to the north in its east to west path from March to September, it is ideal to have your food growing spaces open to the north, maximising sun access. This gives you a lot more options with diversity of crops.
• Due to the excess water of our wet season, there is potential for your soil to have become anaerobic. That means it is lacking air. It then gets smelly, like a stinky compost bin. The simplest way to change this is to loosen the soil with a pitch fork to give it more air. Do not turn the soil, loosen it. Since the soil may have also soured from being too wet, adding some lime will help to bring the ph of the soil into the ideal range (6-7) for the crops.
• If you have made some good quality compost, preferably with the hot compost method, use it for planting your seedlings into your veg garden beds and put some around your fruit trees.
• Be consistent with applying a high quality liquid manure to your garden beds to aid the life process in the
soil. This, as well as using compost when planting, will do a lot to get the young plants through the planting shock stage and help them to grow well and not be obvious targets for insects. I use biodynamic soil preparations.
• For your planting, use companion planting to help your plants grow strongly, inter-crop to get more out of your space, use climbing frames and plant densely.
• It’s a good time to plant fruit trees and to prune.
Some of my favourite crops for late
autumn to winter in our Brisbane sub tropical climate:
• Root – potato, red onion, leek, carrot, beetroot, spring onion, radish, turnip.
• Leafy – lettuce, rocket, kale, silver beet and chard, Asian greens, parsley, basil.
• Fruiting – snow pea, sugar snap pea, purple king beans, cherry tomatoes.
• Flowering – broccoli and edible flowers such as viola, nasturtiums and calendula.
We have a 2 day biodynamic gardening workshop on the 27-28 July at our Draper patch. Our 12 month food garden coaching service is a great way of establishing a pathway to a consistently productive food garden using organic and biodynamic methods. See our web site at www. myfoodgarden.com.au for more information.
We have expanded our food growing space and are now taking on some customers for weekly produce from our biodynamic vegetable garden. The image in this story is a basket of produce from the garden. Contact me at our website for more information. Happy gardening.

SPONSORING FUR-EVER FRIENDS
Believing that anything is paw-sible, Community Bank Samford partners with Guide Dogs Queensland, sponsoring two puppies being trained to assist people who are blind or have low vision.
At 10 weeks old, pups Susie and Samson have been introduced to lots of different sights, sounds, smells and places. After wagging goodbye to their mum and littermates, Susie and Samson are taking the next step in their journeys to become fully-fledged guide dogs.
The pair have taken up residence with volunteer puppy-raising families who will introduce them to more of the world and ensure they are loved and well cared for. Susie has bounded into her new role as Guide Dog ambassador, lending a paw at a Guide Dogs Queensland merchandise stall at Burpengary.
Community Bank Samford’s grant supported the Guide Dog Mobility program, including the ‘Breeding CentreBirth & Care of New Pups’ which provides specialised care of a brood through prepregnancy, pregnancy and birth of a litter. It also supported the onsite care of pups from birth through their critical first 8-10 weeks of life. This included the brood and litter’s examinations, medical procedures around birth, vaccinations, microchipping, general medical care, hygiene control and staffing.
Funding this program provides the support needed to improve the quality of pups born in the Guide Dogs nursery, increasing the numbers of qualified Guide Dogs. As a result, more people with vision loss and blindness can experience the freedom and independence of having a Guide Dog.
The current breeding program can only run with community and corporate support.
Guide Dogs Queensland is incredibly grateful for the grant assistance it receives to continue empowering people to achieve their goals of independence, participation, inclusion and wellbeing.

DOLL SHOW ON AGAIN
Northside Doll, Bear and Craft Show
Sunday 2nd June
Strathpine Community Hall.
This annual event showcases a beautiful display of porcelain dolls, reborn dolls and bears. This show is the only doll competition in Queensland and even in days past, when there were many doll shows, this competition was always recognised as one of the best.
There will also be plenty of trading tables with people selling a large variety of items. Anything from antique and vintage dolls to doll making supplies and also lovely, handmade bears. There is a beautiful porcelain doll with a baby in a pram to be raffled, with the proceeds going to a number of regular charities, including the CWA Rural Crisis Fund.
This year, refreshments will be available from the CWA, so you can expect very tasty food - and they have promised fresh scones!
This show has been presented for nearly 37 years. Come along, enjoy a great day and bring your children. Children and adults alike will love the displays.

SAMFORD’S LOCAL FLORA
Shiny-leaved Canthium (Psydrax odorata subsp. odorata)
This shapely large shrub in the coffee family ( Rubiaceae) normally grows to about 3-6m. It is usually found in the drier rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales, but is also found on hillsides inland or on coastal sand dunes. This species also
occurs in Hawaii, Micronesia and parts of the South Pacific. Its branches emerge perpendicular to the trunk, creating an interesting, layered habit.
The shiny opposite dark green leaves to 9cm are paler underneath. The prolific perfumed 4-petalled white flowers are borne in dense clusters in spring and summer and attract many beneficial insects. These are followed by round black fruit to 7mm. This shrub sometimes has swollen hollow stems inhabited by ants.
The Shiny-leaved Canthium is an attractive hardy local species that prefers reasonably well-drained soils and is drought-tolerant. It fares best in dappled shade and benefits from mulching. It is relatively slow growing and may be frost tender when young, although this is rarely an issue locally. With its glossy foliage and shapely habit, it makes a great garden shrub that deserves to be grown more widely.
Specimens can be seen at the Samford Eco-Corridor (https://www.facebook.com/ EcoCorridor).

BURDEKIN PLUM
The scientific name of Burdekin plum ( Pleiogynium timorensis) describes the fruit (pleio - many; gynium – female parts or carpels) and the place from which it was first collected (Timor). This beautiful shade tree (called guybalum in the Djabugay language) naturally occurs in monsoon forest and rainforests as well as woodlands, usually along water courses, north from Gympie through the islands to the north of Australia and in the Pacific.
Although taller under ideal natural conditions, Burdekin Plum trees grow to about 12m in cultivation, or as a stunted shrub under harsher conditions. It belongs to the same family as the cashew and mango. The trunk, which has a rough, dark grey bark, may form buttress roots in older specimens. The dense glossy green canopy is made up of pinnate leaves, each composed of 3 - 11 leaflets that have bronzecoloured new growth. In many areas there are two flowerings – in winter and spring. The inconspicuous yellow-green flowers are borne on separate male and female plants. The purple-black fruit, which are about 4cm across with a large woody seed covered by a thin layer of flesh, ripen about 5 months after flowering. These are edible and although somewhat sour when fresh, make delicious conserves and wine. The early European settlers valued the fruit.
Burdekin Plum is a hardy, drought-tolerant tree, that grows in a variety of well-drained soils in full sun. It is, however, susceptible to frost. Application of an organic fertiliser before flowering will encourage fruiting. The timber of this tree is widely sought by wood-turners and cabinet makers. Light to reddish brown in colour, it is a fine grained, fairly hard wood. Both the flowers and the fruit attract birds. Birds, fruit bats and wallabies have been observed dispersing the seeds whilst possums will feed on the fruit.

ROLY-POLY SATINASH
The Roly-poly Satinash ( Syzygium unipunctatum) is a small, evergreen tree with a weeping habit and beautiful flushes of pink or red growth. The mature, glossy green, lance-shaped leaves, which are tapered to a point, have a wavy edge. Like so many members of its genus, the leaves of the Roly-poly Satinash have many oil glands. This tree has a very thin, tan-cream bark that, unusually, has sections which extend into the wood. It’s white, fluffy flowers in summer are followed by blue, discoid fruit that are longitudinally grooved and resemble miniature pumpkins.
Given its size, lovely growth habit, colour variation between juvenile and mature leaves and unique fruit, this is an ideal feature tree in any garden and is suitable for planting in large pots. A light pruning encourages new, red leaf growth. This species can also, with heavier pruning, be developed into a hedge. Although it is endemic to tropical Queensland, it grows well in southern, temperate regions in reasonably well-drained soils that have been well composted. Although the Roly-poly Satinash will tolerate extended dry periods, being a rainforest tree, it grows best when regular water is available.

SLEEP LIKE DEATH
Kalynn Bayron
This is a magical, dark fairytale retelling with a strong female lead: a princess, Eve, who possesses unique magical abilities matched only by those of the elusive Knight, who is known to antagonise the kingdom by granting twisted wishes. When Eve’s caring mother starts losing touch with reality right before Eve’s 17th birthday, she becomes even more desperate to hunt down the Knight and unravel the mystery of him, which brings her into contact with the expansive world and diverse, complex characters within this book.
The story is immersive yet fast-paced, though every twist and turn comes as a slow and haunting revelation. It is a perfectly adapted retelling of Snow White, combining familiar elements of the story with new, dark ideas. It is the perfect book for any fantasy or fairytale lover.

THE APPRENTICE WITNESSER Bren MacDibble
Basti is happy in her life as the Apprentice Witnesser in her small town. Her guardian and main miracle witnesser is a tall, beautiful black woman named Lodyma Darsey. She is an expert storyteller at the town markets and wows the crowds with her tales taken from real-life events and her glamorous if-a-little-worn cloaks. Lodyma has other things collected from the past and a world Basti never experienced. Basti was born into this
new harsher world, with less people, and the ongoing threat of illnesses sweeping through populations at random.
“Far as I can tell, the big collapse was when the climate got hotter, the cities washed into the sea and the pollution and diseases took out most of the people.”
Based in an all too possible future, Bren MacDibble takes readers into a different way of life. Less people, and more care within communities, but within a subsistence, bartering world with simple pleasures and no electricity.
Worried that she will lose her place as apprentice to Lodyma, Basti ventures out beyond the safety of the community to help discover some answers that will bring healing to many. I loved this book for its loving approach to alternate ways of living encased in a ripping good story. For ages 9+

BRIGHT OBJECTS
Ruby Todd
So many books about a woman dealing with grief and loss pass across my desk that I have developed an aversion to just hearing that description from the sales rep. I don’t know why this one slipped through, maybe because of the astronomy, but I’m glad it did. Ruby Todd deals with the topic differently to any other book I’ve read and took me by surprise with its opening dryness of tone and humour. Sylivia lost her husband two years ago in a car accident and the offender has never been found, although she has her suspicions as to who is responsible. In a small town, where everyone knows everyone else’s business, how could she not. But the town is growing, with an influx of visitors for the best viewing of a once-in-alifetime comet. Happenings in the sky have always brought out strange theories and prophecies from the people observing and the regional town of Jericho is no different. Can we pin life decisions and actions to the movements of celestial bodies, or are we just searching for meaning where there is none? This is a humorous, thought provoking and surprising novel that has gone straight to the Faves shelf.

SANCTUARY
Gary Disher
In the same league as Peter Temple and Jane Harper, Gary Disher, writer of 60 works across many genres, has produced an intriguing, very Australian crime noir, Sanctuary, woven around the lives of two abused women. Grace and Erin (not their real names), live in mortal fear of men from their pasts. For agoraphobe Erin, the devilish cause of her every nightmare, is coercive, vindictive Brodie.
Abused thief who specialises in highvalue, small items, Grace avoids a past associate who insists she has his trophy watch. With hypervigilance, she creates safety nets so she can disappear at a moment’s notice. Her yearning for stability brings her to Erin’s antiques store in a rural South Australian town - a place she can work and settle down in, until...
Disher’s characters are multi-faceted, so believable that one questions whether there is a time when crime is excusable so Grace can start again. Disher has quietly gained international respect for his dark, masterful portrayals of Australian landscape and sinister fictional people, but he says there was “a kind of cultural cringe that if it is Australian, it can’t be good enough and if it is crime, it is therefore junk fiction…I only sold in small quantities for most of my working life.”
Michael Robotham said, “(Disher)’s the crime writer that other crime writers read. He’s incredibly influential.”
The scope of Dishers’ work is remarkable. The Sunken Road in 1996 was shortlisted for the Booker prize but “sank without a trace in Australia.” Two of his early works, The Bamboo Flute and The Divine Wind took out Book of the Year and Notable Book in The Children’s Book Council’s yearly awards. He has won a swag of international and Australian crime writing awards. He is a writer to follow, an Australian author to believe in.
