Asked what she liked most about her job, Sinead said, “I like helping other people. That is why I had the idea to work in Aged Care already since High School. I find it most rewarding when I am able to make the residents happy and can help to make their lives a little bit easier. I find it very rewarding to get to know each resident and know what their needs are and how they like something done. It makes me happy when

Like many young women her age, 21-yr-old Samford Valley local, Sinead Skorka-Brennan dreamed of finding the perfect job. One that would build her confidence but also give her independence and job satisfaction. In a world where preconceptions about disability are still an issue, she was finding employment opportunities really difficult to come by. You see, Sinead is a young woman with Down Syndrome and because of this, she is often treated like a child, instead of a young gymnast, adult.having represented Australia at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March this year, bringing home four medals, two of them gold in bar and beam events. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Dickson Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. You would think these achievements alone would open doors for her – but unfortunately not.

Enter the award-winning and critically acclaimed ABC documentary series Employable Me, which followed the stories of nine people with disabilities as they battled to find work. The documentary, which was aired in April, aimed to show potential employers the capable people behind their condition and highlight the importance for people to feel valued. Throughout the series, participants worked with experts, job coaches and their families to uncover their skills and talents and match them to roles that harnessed their strengths.

Sinead hoped to work in aged care with the goal of improving the lives of those she cared for. Taking steps toward her goal, she completed a Certificate 3 in Aged Care and was looking for an employer to give her a chance. That employer was Anglicare Symes Grove, where Sinead secured a parttime role, helping residents with their daily

SEG are immensely grateful for grant funding from SDPPA towards purchase of a multi-use water trailer. The trailer will serve several uses at our home grounds on Denis Goodwin Reserve (DGR). First and foremost, the trailer will enable us to provide clean drinking water to areas not serviced by infrastructure (pipes & taps). This convenience will not only enhance event enjoyment and improve efficiency, but importantly it will provide better support to SEG’s many older members and those with disability who often struggle to carry large tubs of water from far-away taps.

SDPPA have been instrumental in their support for our club over recent years. Grants in general have played a significant role in enhancing our community space - creating vibrancy and significant momentum for our club. Largely as a result of generous grant providers like SDPPA, our club membership has now doubled to well over 400 - and still growing strong! Since joining SEG’s committee in the grants role 6 years ago, I’m immensely proud of that extraordinary legacy and the ongoing community benefits we see happening daily.

The trailer will also be used to transport various items of bulky heavy equipment in support of events and the Samford Show. And of course any measure that reduces effort then translates into better support for our revered volunteers - many of whom have mature-age backs to match!

Little did we know another long drought, cyclonic winds and heatwaves continued to prevail long into that summer and beyond. earth earth, so peaceful so colourful and special you couldn’t be better Haiku by Cameron

Not only was this engagement transformational for the participating students, teachers and wider school community, but the legacy outcome of this program has resulted in a mural at the library entrance titled, Imagining the Future of this Land Filled with Smoke and Hope, that reflects the thoughts and feelings and magical motifs of our year 6 students, interwoven with references to relevant archival photography, and Joseph Lycett’s Aborigines Hunting Kangaroos with Fire (1817).Namely, the mural borrows and extends Lycett’s smoke motif as one visible sign of First Nations peoples making, managing, and caring for their sovereign lands. The smoke motif (plumes of blue) can be seen in the mural emerging through all of time, which plays out as a loosely chronological but non-linear and open-ended reel from left to right. The mural aims to capture a sense of place and time (the past, the present, and the future on Aboriginal lands) marked by imminent change, hope and new life for the whole school community to enjoy.

Some of the artworks created by the year 6 students will be part of the Moreton Bay Youth Art Awards, as well as an exhibition at the Arana Hills Library for the month of November 2022.

SAMFORD’S VERY FIRST PUBLIC ARTWORK LAUNCHES

The result was an artist-in-residence program involving two incursions (and lots of mess making) at Samford State School with local artist, Dr Sally Molloy and year 6 students. Dr Molloy is a local multidisciplinary artist. Her practice explores her relationship with place and time by interrogating colonial legacy through art history and Australian landscape traditions.

During the program, year 6 students participated in artist-led workshops, reflecting on this significant year for the school and for them (being their final year of primary school) - what this means to them - by exploring the past, present and future of the school, Samford and beyond, through artmaking.

One of the activities involved students writing a Haiku (a form of Japanese poetry made of short, unrhymed lines that evoke natural imagery) to the students of the future, with one of these selected to frame the artwork:

This initiative is part of Samford State School 150 Year Celebrations, supported by Principal Nicole Collins and her team, and made possible through a Community Bank Samford ‘2022 Samford and Pine Rivers Community Grants Program’ on behalf of Samford State School P&C.

THE FUTURE IS COMING: THE MAKING OF A MURAL

On 10th September 2022, during a very busy and colourful Samford State School Spring Festival, a quiet happening occurred with momentous impact. Samford’s first major public artwork was launched as part of the Samford State School 150-year celebrations.Thisisno ordinary mural, this artwork, which is situated at the entrance of the school library, was ignited from a family tree and history from 1930s where school, students, teaching and Principals were quite different.Theinstigator of this project is local cultural producer, Pia Robinson, Founder of The Culture Crusader. Her husband’s great-grandmother, Winfred Hine, was a schoolteacher at Samford State School and great-grandfather was ex-Principal Harry Hine, who contributed to the foundations of what Samford has become today - helping get the Bowls Club off the ground, planting a number of pine trees in the school grounds with the intention to sell the wood to allow for more students to access education –(they have grown to become a grove of towering trees still in the grounds). He also dished out the cane and was a very strict father to his daughter, Shirley Kenman (nee Hine). Being the Principal’s daughter was no easy life back in the 1930s and 1940s.

An item by Peg Nugent in a 1988 Village Pump recalls games of this era featuring lunch under the Farmers Hall. One Sunday a huge storm hit unexpectedly. All had to grab the nets so the tape wouldn’t rot, put their wooden racquets under their skirts to stop them warping, and huddle in the flimsy tennis shelter. Everyone thought the Farmers Hall roof was going to blow off. Jack Lawson’s tank had been lifted onto the train line and the train was due. So all the men raced to shift the hefty tank while the women watched anxiously for the train smoke. Thankfully the train was late. The courts were still too wet post-storm to play, so Mick Stern decided to hasten the drying by pouring petrol onto the courts - apparently an old trick.

Memories and moments of history flowed, sparked by Samford Museum and Warren Meale’s new photo display.

Game, Set & Match after a Century of Tennis

99 YEAR LANDMARK SERVES FOR THE MATCH

Fixtures resurged in the 1980s led by President Ross Pickering and Treasurer/ Coach Paul Flemming. Major court renovations were started to solve drainage issues. A very wet year in 1988 continually postponed the opening of the long-awaited all-weather courts. The Samford Tennis Classic and Veterans Tournament had to be staged on various private courts but were a success with proceeds to the Samford Show Society for its tree planting program.

When a 99-year-old district landmark is to go, it’s fitting to celebrate the central community role it has played. So, on Sunday 28 August, some tennis players from as far back as the 1940s gathered at the Samford Village Tennis Courts to farewell this space that is soon to be a car park.

Like some other local sporting sites, it was one family’s generosity that made the past century of tennis in the heart of Samford possible. The pioneering Cash family donated the land for the Farmers Hall and its adjacent sporting fields. The Brisbane Courier of 29 May 1923 reported on the ‘new’ district passion for tennis:

For the past few weeks a number of young residents of the Samford district have been very busy preparing a tennis court which is to be opened by Mr. Robinson, head teacher of the local State School, on Saturday, June 9. Tennis is a new pastime in this district, and great enthusiasm is being displayed by the club members. The court is situated in an excellent position, practically in the centre of the township. The following officers have

been elected- President Mr. T. Richards; vice presidents Messers G. Robinson, F. Neilson, A. W. Kingston, E. Guldbransen, H. W. Cash, H. Rive, A. Lawson, R Morrison, A Beier, and W. Morrison; secretary, Miss M Kingston; treasurer, Mr. C. Robinson; captain, Mr. G. Kingston; vice-captain, Mr. E. McDowall.

saw a monthly tennis club dance at the Farmers Hall including euchre tournaments and the musical stylings of the Dayboro Band. These dances fun-ded facilities and equipment. In March 1937, a newly formed Recreation Club voted to renovate the Samford Court and seek a quote for electric light poles for night tennis. Fundraising was novel. Reports tell of a Treasure Hunt for a one-pound note, and the group also gained Pine Shire Council permission for a carnival on the new bridge on the Mount O’Reilly Road, after its official opening (1938).

Early days

COURTSVILLAGE:

Some ‘younger’ attendees at our August farewell recalled the 1960s and 70s when new generations of families were playing and being coached at the Village. Before that, coaching meant going into the ‘Big Smoke’. The thrill of playing in a tournament and winning a Samford Championship as a Junior has stayed a happy memory for some.

They did it in style, including Maria and Grahame Shelley in vintage tennis kit with wooden rackets. Final court time, and a cuppa and chat at the Farmers Hall were all a smash!

A second court in Samford followed soon after in August that year, thanks to the Samford Tourist and Athletic Association. Although tennis came to Queensland in the 1870s, courts had tended to be part of large private houses. Because courts mostly weren’t enclosed, shots had to be contained and so tennis was seen as a sedate enough game for women to play alongside men. Many Samford District tennis players ‘courted on the court’ (including in the 1940s my parents, Daphne andTheMerv).1930s

The nearby train brought other teams from afar - Alderley, Enoggera, Mitchelton, Grovely, Samsonvale and beyond. Olive Gilbey gave us a laugh with her recollections of tennis in the 1940s. Olive and her friends would have to abruptly stop playing as the train passed by - to wave to their boyfriends on the train.

enough, many social and fixture players would have wished the old courts to remain as part of the Village and Hall precinct, but the Village Courts have hit the net of change. The 99 years of Samford Village Tennis won’t be forgotten, and the Farmers Hall, Samford Museum and Parklands Complex will have photos on display.Ifreaders have memories, photos or details they’d like to add as Samford moves to 100 years of tennis in 2023, please share them with Samford Museum for its history files. Gary Scaife Past President & Life Member, Samford Tennis Club

Long serving Treasurer and social organiser Joan Cullen recalled the fun of gala Tennis Balls and the dinners and breakfasts of the following decade. Wimbledon at Samford complete with merchandise was a highlight. But it was all serious fun as Past Presidents Volker Jahnke and Grahame Shelley mentioned: fixtures were competitive, and every game really was like playing for that sheep station.

The sale of the CSIRO lands, growth and the wish to enable more tennis for young and old across the district saw the Village Courts players working with Cr Bob Millar and team to create the New Parklands Tennis Centre. What an undertaking! But an honour to collaborate with then President Howard Neilson and Treasurer Joan Cullen to help secure the future of tennis in the Samford district.

Due to one of the wettest years in a very long time, we noticed that interest in bush fire preparedness is not quite what it should be, in the belief that there is little or no risk.

We now have the opportunity for some bush fire mitigation work in preparation for dryer times without the pressure of immediate fire danger. Here in the mountain areas, most dwellings, outbuildings and assets (referred to as structures) are on hillsides and most of these are on the higher slopes. Because fire usually travels very quickly up hill (it can double in speed for every 10 degrees of elevation) we strongly suggest that residence take a good look at the downhill side of structures to assess the fuel loading and potential fire risk.

If at all possible, we recommend that a fire break be maintained that runs across the hill below the structures - then each year before fire risk season, fuel such as leaves, twigs and anything flammable can be removed from around the structures down as far as the fire break. The break provides a clear reference point to work toward during the clean up process, whilst at the same time is there to assist fire fighters as a line of Itdefence.isworth

increase very quickly on the uphill run, but the flame height also increases as the fuel is preheated by the climbing fire.

remembering that if the fire service is called to a fire on your property and the crew leader considers it unsafe to enter, then fire fighters would not be permitted to enter that property. A well maintained fire break, running across the slope below your structures, would also be a good starting point from which to begin removing fuel build up further down the hill, greatly reducing your overall fire risk.

Due to increased sun exposure, the risk is usually greatest on hilltop properties facing north, because the fuel is usually much dryer and more likely to support a hot fire.

Fuel can be removed with such tools as a brush hook or petrol brush cutter if a larger machine is not suitable or available. As for the fire break, obviously a vehicular track is ideal but if this is not possible then a hand cut break approximately 1.5 metres wide and about 10 metres below the structures would be a good start.

Certainly we have less risk due to the general dampness at the moment, but this situation could change very quickly after strong dry westerly winds, especially in areas where potential fuel has built up due to the rain. Because this wetter than normal trend is forecast to continue into spring and early summer, it may be that the risk continues to be low for the near future. However, the dry conditions will eventually return and the fire risk may then be very high because of the greater than normal build up of potential fuel due to the ideal growing conditions.

“The 150th Anniversary Festival was a wonderful opportunity to reminisce the early days of our school, celebrate achievements made throughout the years and showcase how we are continuing to move forward with excellence,” Principal Nicole Collins said.

Rivalling the EKKA, Samford State School celebrated its 150 year milestone with a festival packed with rides, showbags, pig racing, dog jumping, side show alley, student performances, historical walking trail and an abundance of homemade sweets and baked goods. Smiles were big and so was nostalgia on the day, which showcased the school’s journey from 18 students in 1872 to 720 students currently.

“Without the support and expertise of our local community groups it wouldn’t have been possible to put on an event of this size,” Festival Committee member, Kath Downs, said.

The day started with cutting the 150th anniversary cake and ended with a cracker of a firework show. It took many years to reach this point in time for Samford State School, and many hands to create this momentous day. Congratulations to all who ‘strived with honour’ and were involved in this making of history.

I have always been passionate about food and community. For many years Murray and I owned restaurants and catering businesses and we ran Four Seasons Organics many moons ago. I love the idea of local food sharing and cooking together. So, I put out a call for a community cook up at my place. What a response we had. We ended up having to cap numbers! Everyone was so excited and keen. We made lime pickle, lemon butter and chutney, we dehydrated rosellas, cumquats and oranges. Produce such as sugar, spices and butter were donated, and all the delightful fresh produce was locally grown.

RECIPE: SPICY LIME PICKLE

You may have noticed that Samford is home to some new food exchanges - places where people share home grown produce, gardening items and homemade goodies free of charge using an honesty system. This can include fruits and vegetables, herbs, honey, dried fruits, seasonal recipes, seedlings, flowers etc. and can extend to skill shares and cooking activities. Basically, they are roadside stalls that anyone can access to share food and other items relating to local food growing. You give and take in equal measure over time.

Locally grown citrus, chilli, ginger, garlic, turmeric, eggs and herbs were delivered to the exchange and put aside for the cook up. Recycled jars were washed, scrubbed and prepared and labels were made. A few jars of produce were shared between the cook up participants and then the remainder was shared with the exchange as a gift to the community.Ourlastcook up we made over 200 jars of delicious produce! What a great effort. We had so much fun we organised another night and made choko chutney, cumquat jam and more lime pickle and chilli sauce. Here is the lime pickle recipe. Enjoy!

Samford Joey Scouts recently joined over 600 other Joeys and Leaders, at the annual Joey Jaunt in Baden Powell Park Samford. This Statewide event brought Joeys hopping from the far reaches of sunny Queensland.

Tired and happy at the end of a long day, the Joeys came together around the campfire where they sang a few songs and listened to a yarn or two, before heading home for a well-earned rest.

The Samford Joeys chose to start the morning with archery where they all mastered the art of using a bow and arrow and hit the bullseye on many occasions. Kestrel (Neil Mennie, Joey Leader) said, “One of the best activities of the day, and the one they loved the most, was the Air Activity base, where the Joeys flew a Boeing 737 in a flight simulator, then went on to operate a drone and fly high up over BP Park.”Samford Leaders and helpers ran an activity of their own called the slippery pig (pictured), which was extremely popular and a favourite once again this year with many of Joeys Units.

The Joeys had a fabulous day with a full catalogue of activities on offer including rocket launching, archery, craft, bridge building, solving puzzles, abseiling, rock climbing, visiting the Scout Heritage Centre, communicating with Scouts around the world and navigating a rope bridge and low-ropes course.

“When that final siren went it was my proudest moment as a coach. Over the year we had 33 on our list which was an amalgamation of effectively four teams. Over the course of the year they had come together as one and it took all 33 players to get us to the Grand Final and win the premiership; an enormous achievement,” coach, Ben Odgers, said.

Grit and determination was strong from both teams from the first whistle, with the first quarter fought hard to keep points low with Everton 0.1.1 to Springfield 0.0.0. Springfield lifted in the second quarter, but

Yeronga played host to the grand final match, with Everton stepping onto the field after placing fourth overall and surviving two weeks of elimination rounds. The girls from Everton had faced off with Springfield in proceeding games this year, each walking away with a win a piece.

Grow your savings Understand your cash in ows and out ows so you can work out how much can be set aside as your savings. It is recommended to set realistic goals and a concrete plan to reach your targets. If you’re not yet ready to make investments, at least have your current a airs sorted.

Build multiple sources of income Whether it’s through your business, a side hustle, or investing, building your income network can help you secure your nancial future.

Starting early means you can compound over a longer time period and can take on more risk as you have more time to recover from mistakes.

Avoid bad debt Bad debt is something that leeches money from you over the long-term, including credit card debt or interest for late bill payments. It is also important to note that too much bad debt can impact your credit score and prevent you from borrowing in the future.

Live below your means Living below your means requires suppressing your desires at a certain point. This is probably the most underrated personal nance skill, but one that actually works. You may be tempted to show o your peacock feathers to keep up with your peers. However, those who enjoy enduring nancial success have a propensity to not care about what others think or what others are doing with their lives.

Set aside an emergency fund Your rainy day fund, which could be around 6 months worth of your living expenses, should be one of your priorities. Even just saving 10% of what you get each paycycle can eventually get you to that target amount.

The Conversation (7 September 2022) asked 130 children aged between seven and thirteen what makes a community strong, supportive and fair. Their answers included feeling safe through knowing neighbours, having safe inclusive places to play and having infrastructure that caters for community needs. Samfordites work hard to meet these requirements in a community spreading over mountains and valleys.

The 1884 School Committee included John Delaney Bergin, William Bynon, John Fitzgerald, John Fitzgibbon and James Scott Wight.Awell recorded fact is that many local farmers sent their cream to Kingston Butter factory (KBF). Logan City Library and KBF Historical Society have shared with us a list of 61 suppliers names from 1916-1933 sourced from the now digitised huge ledgers (preserved at Queensland State Library) from the factory. Many names are familiar when looking at local school’s admissions registers and photos.

Vehicle related criminal activity is one of the most prolific, from car break-ins to car theft. Yet we can reduce the incidence of motor vehicle crime by employing some practical strategies. Not leaving valuables in a parked car, always locking your car when it is left unattended and stowing your car keys in a secure place when at home, are just some things that come to mind.

A quote from the Chairman of our Players Coordinating Committee sent to our members.

Our club was the venue for a wedding on 2nd September from 3pm. We were all a bit concerned about the grey skies as the time for the bride to arrive got closer, as it was to be an outdoor service. All went as planned and the guests came around to the greens to enjoy a game of Barefoot Bowls while the all-important photos were taken. Our group of volunteers got the action going, an unusual activity for a wedding but from the smiles and laughter it was a hit. The rain arrived as the group headed indoors for the main event, food, music, dancing and a few drinks. Our indoor volunteer group reported it was a great night.

CREATINGCOMPOSTCRACKER

Roz Azizi is also known among local gardening circles as the ‘Compost Queen’ after unearthing much research and undergoing trial and error to crack the secret to creating compost so good it’s like having Costa Georgiadis as your personal gardener. She is keen to share her knowledge of

“I picked a little corner, not too far from the back door so its quick to take out the kitchen scraps, but close to the vegetable gardens and citrus trees so I don’t have to carry the compost far when I’m putting it on the garden.”

Roz uses a pitch fork to turn her compost each time she takes out the kitchen scraps, saying that this added oxygenation is key to speeding the composting process.

compost to help more people get hands-on with this regenerative process and to make the most of their edible gardens.

While it may look like a big mound of dirt, compost is called ‘gardener’s gold’ for a reason, working wonders to help seeds and plants flourish. Perfect compost has an earthy smell and a fine texture with no sight of the original food scrap ingredients. If you’ve ever tried the art of composting, you may have run into typical problems of the mixture being too wet, or too dry, or too acidic for the scraps to breakdown effectively.Compost requires a mixture of green materials (dried leaves, hay or newspaper) and brown materials (food scraps and grass cuttings). Three parts brown materials to one part green material makes for a generally accepted successful compost recipe. If your compost pile is wet and smelly, add more brown material or aerate the mixture. Alternatively, if the compost is extremely dry and brown, moisten it with green items and water.

“We put the grass clippings on top which creates a bit of seal on the compost underneath and boy do things heat up in there. I try not to disturb anything for a few days because getting that layer of grass in there is when the actual composting process appears to be at its peak,” she said.

“We only put vegetable and fruit scraps in the compost; no meat products, no citrus and no onions. When I harvest the compost I never take more than about four plastic tub-fulls at a time, that’s enough for what I need at any one go. It takes time for the

microbes to build up in a new system, so making sure there is plenty of compost still left behind means I’m never starting from scratch.”Apart from improving soil quality and reducing landfill, Roz has found other benefits to getting involved with the art of composting.“It’swonderful to see the grandchildren being so thoughtful about putting their vegetable and fruit scraps in the little kitchen compost bin under the sink. They love being able to go out and pick yummy things straight from the garden, so learning about the important part that composting plays in all that is a great life lesson.”

Black Apple (Planchonella australis) is a fast-growing tree native to the Illawarra region of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The large, leathery, somewhat diamond-shaped leaves emerge alternatively along the stems. They are shiny, dark green above and paler on the underside and form a dense, evergreen canopy. Growing to 25m in height in its natural, rainforest habitat, this tree usually only reaches 10 – 15m in garden situations. The beautifully fluted trunk is covered in rough brown bark.

is easy to grow and adapts readily to cultivation in a variety of sandy, loamy or clay soils with a pH from mildly acidic to mildly alkaline. It does, however, prefer moist conditions with good drainage. It may be grown in full sun or part shade and responds well to extra fertilising.

Black Apple trees are protogynous – they have separate male and female flowers on each plant. The small, white female flowers appear first in early spring and are followed soon after by the male flowers. This promotes pollination between different trees and thus genetic variability within the species. The fertilised female flowers produce fruit that ripen to a purplish, blue/

Black Apple is prized as one of the best carving woods in Australia and is a source of high-quality commercial timber for cabinet making and so is often cultivated as a specialist timber crop. Since the tree fruits between 3 to 5 years of age, it also has potential as a commercial bush food crop.

The Black Apple will tolerate mild frosts. Although a wonderful shade tree for a large garden or acreage property, the tree can be pruned to moderate size or grown in a pot. It is excellent in revegetation projects as it provides wildlife habitat. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, the fruit

supported by 20 volunteer members ranging in age from 17 – 80 years old. So far this year, this busy team of sewers and packers has distributed 440 kits to Timor Leste, PNG and the refugee camps in Somalia. The kits consist of shields (made from cotton and PUL waterproof fabric) flannelette liners, undies, a washer, soap and a waterproof pouch (for dirty liners), with an instruction sheet for use and to track period dates - all packed in a brightly coloured cotton carry bag.Importantly, distribution of these kits is accompanied with a lesson in hygiene, menstruation and the empowering messages of “No means No” and how to recognise “childCathyslavery”.isseeking more volunteers to help sew the kit components. If you’re not a sewer that’s okay too, as they need people to help with other tasks like packing, cutting and ironing, in preparation for the kits to be transported where they’re needed most. These markets in the grounds of St Paul’s Anglican Church are staffed by a small band of willing volunteers and have been a valuable outlet for local stall holders. After a cold wet winter, spring is here and we are hopeful of renewed energy at the markets, which have raised valuable money for many charitable causes, both local and for the wider community.
