Good bye James Heron

On August 5th James Heron was enjoying a long push bike ride that was to culminate in a good hill-climb up Mt Coot-Tha and down the other side to join his wife, Jane for a coffee and the rest of the day. It is an immense loss to his family, friends and community that he had a collision with a motorbike travelling in the opposite direction, and his life was ended at the scene.

his rides in the countryside, delighting in seeing his two ‘boys’, James and Callum grow into fine men and planning a relaxed and adventurous life with his wife, Jane. He was loved and respected by his community having been the postmaster for 20 years and giving a helping hand whenever he could. His father, Jim Heron, still lives in the family home at Samford where James would visit and help out.

His departure from our lives has left a gaping hole and a longing to see him again. To be kind to each other on our roads through thoughtful driving is a message that he would surely pass to all of us if he could.

JUSTICES OF THE PEACE

James was an avid and highly experienced bicycle rider; easily completing 150 kilometres in a morning with the team from the Warwick district near his home town of Killarney. He had been riding since he was a child in Samford where he grew up, with rides to and from school the common form of transport for the Heron kids. As a teen he would ride to Ferny Grove for the train and ventured to Sydney and back to visit an Aunty! Rides up and down Mt Glorious were greatly enjoyed; ‘Love the hills’ was his mantra!

At 65 years old he had just retired from work and was regularly helping out the aged and needy in Killarney, enjoying

We celebrate Biodiversity Month every September and promote the importance of connecting with nature and caring for nature in all its diversity – its biodiversity!

Nature is valuable - we need nature. It provides the building blocks for our survival such as food, clean air, water and shelter. Nature also supports our health and wellbeing and our economy. And while we need nature, nature also needs us.

Biodiversity is the variety of all life forms on earth – the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, and the ecosystems that are their homes.

We live in a very special place – full of diversity. Australia is one of a group of only 17 ‘mega-diverse’ countries. These megadiverse countries cover less than 10% of the world’s area but have more than 70% of its biodiversity. Many of our plants, animals and places are unique and are not found anywhere else in the world.

September also is the start of the Spring season so here are some fun biodiversity activities for the whole family to do during the school holidays:

• Go on a Bush Blitz expedition to your backyard or a local park. Learn more about your neighbours – the local species in the nature areas near you!

• Keep a nature journal by recording the animals and plants you have seen over the month and illustrate with drawings and photos. (Send them into the Village Pump)

• Look at ways to avoid and reduce waste and increase what you recycle. For more information on what you can recycle in your local area, just

web search Recycling Near You.

• Start your own compost bin or worm farm for food waste if you have space. Organic matter like vegetable scraps is great for your garden.

• You can also create a natural habitat in your backyard. Look at plants that are native to our region, find out if any are threatened, and help create a backyard sanctuary for local birds and wildlife - and extend this to your nature strip.

• For a fun holiday activity for kids to explore more about local plants and wildlife, you can all visit the Kumbartcho Environment Education Centre Sanctuary and Nursery at 15 Bunya Pine Court Eatons Hill.

Give a Box and Feed Families in Need

The Mini Farm Project, a local charity committed to addressing food insecurity, has launched the ‘Give a Box’ initiative to alleviate hunger in the community. With the alarming statistic that 1 in 5 households is experiencing daily food scarcity and over 1.3 million children went hungry last year, The Mini Farm Project aims to bridge the gap by providing farm-fresh produce to families in need.

Founder of The Mini Farm Project, Nick Steiner, shared his motivation behind the initiative. “I wanted to fill the shortfall of available food and ensure that no family goes hungry. The dire situation has prompted us to take action and make a meaningful impact.”

Through the ‘Give a Box’ initiative, individuals can make a significant difference with a $20 donation. Each donated box of farm-fresh produce serves as a lifeline to a family in need, while also helping to fund the organisation’s farms at LuvaBerry in Wamuran and Millen Farm in Samford.

“We believe that community support is vital in tackling the hunger crisis. For just $20, anyone can directly contribute to feeding a family and support our ongoing efforts to provide fresh, nutritious food,” said Nick.

Nick’s dedication to eradicating food insecurity has seen him recently awarded

the 2023 Moreton Bay Citizen of the Year. This honour reflects his tireless commitment to building new farms and expanding resources to meet the ever-pressing need for food.

The Mini Farm Project’s ‘Give a Box’ promotion addresses the immediate need for nourishment in the community. To participate in this initiative and make a tangible impact on families’ lives, you can donate $20 by heading to: https://mfp.org. au/products/give-a-box.

Nick Steiner and The Mini Farm Project encourage everyone to embrace the spirit of giving and join hands in the fight against hunger. All donations are fully taxdeductible, making it easier than ever for the community to support this critical cause.

A CONTAINER THAT LED TO A DANCE PARTY

Samford and surrounds community rallied together late last year with donations of goods to ship to a Ugandan school and orphanage, not without a few hiccups!

Draper local Kerima Smith shared the joy with 132 children and teachers when the goods finally arrived in mid-March at the school in Buwambo, just outside the Ugandan capital of Kampala. After some government red tape and hoops to jump through, teachers were so excited to receive the shipment, they held a little dance party in the school yard!

Kerima and husband Andrew, heard of the dire needs of the school and orphanage some years ago. Their charity, Christian Destiny Limited, has been supporting them ever since. They spent six weeks in Uganda over February and March, staying with friend and school founder Gidoen Kabenge, also an orphan, and his family, to meet the container and help at the school and orphanage. This was their second visit and they intend to return every six or so months.

“We knew as soon as we heard of the need at Ararat Christian Junior School that we had to be involved. It has been a dream of mine since I was a young adult to help children who are needy in Africa,” Kerima says. “The level of poverty even surprised Andrew and I - the one meal a day, one set of clothes and less than adequate living environment - we knew we just had to help.”

The 20 foot shipping container took five months to pack with every nook and cranny filled with a range of items including clothing, underwear, shoes and toilet paper. Kerima estimates that 70% of its contents were donations from the Samford and surrounding community, including around 30 school chairs from Dayboro State School. Bookshelves, books, school stationery, crockery, toys and toiletries including sanitary items were donated as well. Another 70 school chairs, hair salon basins, chairs, scissors, clippers, nail polishes and barber equipment were also sourced to contribute to a new salon in Buwambo. There was even a welder and accessories to create further employment opportunities.

Christian Destiny has created a microfinance program operating out of a local church in Buwambo, to provide small start-up capital loans with low interest, for the unemployed to create their own business. A chapati vendor, four snack/

grocery shops, a custom knitwear business and a boutique, are just some of the businesses now operating. This will continue to increase, lending more funds as the program grows.

Andrew and Kerima are most excited to have Gideon stay with them here later this month and together, host an awareness and fundraising dinner at Café Lagarto in Samford, 6.30pm Friday 29 September, to support the orphans.

NEW RECRUITS PASS TRAINING

107 completed Exercise Ground

Zero recently, with new recruits passing the training to be promoted to cadets. This was held for the first time at the Samford Baden Powell Park, which allowed for good navigation and radio training in a local area.

During the weekend, cadets covered survival training, communications, first aid and navigation. Food was ration packs for the weekend, except Father’s day morning, where the parent support group came and cooked up excellent bacon and egg rolls that we really appreciated, a hearty breakfast for the days patrolling activity. For some, it was the first time sleeping under a hoochie, cooking their own food and understanding the need for sound techniques in a military like scenario.

The cadets will attend the Annual Field Exercise for South East Queensland over the school holidays, this year held between Canungra Military Training Camp, Greenbank, and Enoggera, where they will hone their skills, get to train with 500 other South East Queensland cadets, and undertake live firing exercises.

Interested in joining cadets? We are currently looking for adult helpers to support the unit. If you are ex defence member, ex cadet, or just a motivated member of the community, we would like your help to deliver the Australian Army

Cadets program. Adult Officers, Instructors and Defence Approved Helpers are the backbone of the organisation. We are seeking people who have a keen interest in working with young people to develop their potential and deliver an outstanding youth development program. If you are interested, please email 107@armycadets.gov.au, or look at our website www.armycadets.gov. au. We are also actively recruiting new cadets - get a jump on next year. If you are 12 or 13 years old and want to come along, you can try it out for next term.

Australian Army Cadets (AAC), a youth development program for 13-18yrs, acts to promote pride in the self, community and nation. Against common belief, although the AAC has strong affiliation with the Australian Military, cadets are not part of the Army nor obligated to join when they come of age.

The AAC, however, aims to be an inclusive environment where one can experience adventurous activity and cultivate the values of courage, respect, teamwork and integrity. Army Cadets is founded on strong community partnerships which involves parents and other organisations such as the RSL.

We parade from 1800 to 2030 every Monday excluding holidays. If interested in joining, please contact the Officer commanding on 107ACU@armycadets.gov. au. We are taking new recruits now, so if you are between 13 and 16 years old, send an email, and then come on down on Monday night to have a go. We Want You for the Samford Army Cadet Unit.

STEM CHALLENGE

Year 5 and 6 STEM teams participated in the Bray Park State High School STEM Challenge earlier this year. Mount Samson entered two teams to participate in a full day of challenges — with both teams successful amongst 36 teams from across this region, winning both first and third places overall. Students competed in two teams of four (8 in total attended) across the day. The Maths and Science challenge involved the students completing some maths questions and problems. They then needed to build a boat out of different materials and test its buoyancy with different weights. Students participated in a Kahoot challenge online with a mixture of science and maths questions.

Students responded well: “It was a great time.” “It was fun and taught us more about Science and Maths; it was a great thinking challenge as well and extended

our thinking further.” “Our teamwork skills also developed because of the boat building – such as listening to one another and working as a team”.

“We are very proud of this achievement and look forward to continuing our collaboration with our local high schools as part of our STEM education. We also note, most commendably, our students’ personal thank you to the principal of the hosting high school for the day,” said Jodie Beverley, Head of Department Curriculum.

More horse power for Samford RDA

Samford RDA supporter and local Member, Nikki Boyd, regularly visits the RDA Centre to see her sponsored horse, Misty – but this month she was keen to check out horse power of a different kind.

A new Ford Ranger 4x4 utility was purchased by Samford RDA (Riding for the

Disabled Association) as part of a $96,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant provided through the State Government with Nikki’s support. The funding will also purchase an angle-load horse float and a shade structure to protect both vehicles.

Up until now, Samford RDA volunteers have used their own vehicles to transport horses to the vet or spelling paddock, pick up hay and stock feed, and cart loads of soil and vegetation during working bees. The dedicated RDA ute and a float which is currently being built, will relieve pressure on volunteers to use their own vehicles for RDA purposes.

Samford RDA President, Rebecca Clemmey, thanked Nikki and the Queensland Government for their continuing support of the work of RDA to improve the lives of children and adults with a disability. Funding from all levels of government over many years has helped to grow the Samford centre at the showgrounds into a leading RDA facility, complete with covered riding arena and dedicated office and tack shed.

Samford RDA is actively recruiting volunteers to join their ranks and is keen to see more local businesses and individuals become involved with the centre as sponsors or committee members in 2024. For volunteer enquiries, contact volunteer@ samfordrda.com.au; for other enquiries, contact rdasamford@gmail.com.

Pre-Loved Books in New Hands

Samford State School

P&C had the novel idea of holding a second hand book sale, raising funds for the school, expanding kids’ reading and encouraging sustainability.

Over 4,500 books were donated by both those at the school and the wider Samford community, with 3,500 books sold at the event. Students booked out time in their day to fill a bag for $5, ultimately raising over $1,500 for the school P&C.

Help on the day came from volunteer parents, grandparents, friends, students, staff and members of St Paul’s Anglican Church. Local bookstore Baffies Oan Books also donated book vouchers as raffle prizes.

Parent organiser Janette Zlamal was thrilled at how many people contributed to the event, and how much positive feedback volunteers received around the trestle tables.

“There was pure excitement from the students when they were told they could fill a bag with books,” she said. “Some parents bought multiple bags of books

and a local grandfather almost filled his boot full of books to serve his retirement project; his grandchildren. And opposite to that, some students were buying books for their grandparents,” said Janette.

“After the sale, I had parents telling me that their kids loved their books. One boy had brought home a cookbook and spent the weekend making things out of it with his mum.”

Visitors were impressed with the range of books on offer and were particularly grateful at how affordable the sale was. While immediate benefits of the event are vast, how this sharing of knowledge may

shape the next generation is yet to unfold.

“I’m always curious about all the hidden benefits that may occur because of something like this; the unseen ripples of change and flow on effects of kindness,” Janette said.

“Who knows, maybe a young student discovered a book that day that will spark an interest which will grow into a passion and then that child will do something extra amazing in the future.”

All remaining books were donated to Community Library Samford to live out their next chapter.

SERVICE SIDE BY SIDE

When the Hallinans moved to Port Moresby in 1961, they made a joint commitment to serve. Coral established a welcoming home in the grounds of a prison. Visionary dynamo “tradie” Brian had been “appointed to start workshops in the PNG Native Corrective Institutions (jails) for inmates to learn tank making, brick making, machinery use and to supply building materials” for new schools. Coral joined the Country Women’s Association and started a dressmaking business. In 1962, after their second son’s birth, Brian transferred to Wewak, an isolated townlet on the edge of the Bismarck Sea, to establish another workshop for the incarcerated.

“Two other families lived on the (prison) property. We had a play group with the army base women living close to the jail. All our cleaning... was done by a trusted inmate. My eldest boy started school in Wewak. I supported the wives of the native wardens who had to keep the different tribes working together in harmony while they did their jail time. The inmates learnt skills they could later use in their villages.”

In 1964, Coral gave birth to a girl in Wewak. PNG’s infant and maternal mortality rates were very high, and re-purposed army huts formed the hospital. Gentle, serene,

highly-principled Coral had a backbone of top-quality tensile steel.

The couple moved twice more before returning to Brisbane for their children’s secondary education. Both strongly supported the children’s schools. Coral voluntarily altered and repaired boarders’ uniforms at Marist Brothers College. Brian helped the boarders with homework.

In 1972, when Brian began his long association with the Lions’ Club in Ashgrove, Coral became a Lady Lion. While she helped establish the gardens at the Men of the Trees headquarters, Brian became involved.

“Finding lots of garden clippings dumped

into the waterways starting from The Gap and working their way through to Ashgrove’s Marist Brothers College, Brian founded SOWN (Save Our Waterways Now).” Brian convinced Men of The Trees to back his grant applications.

While Brian re-organised Bretts Joinery after the 1974 floods and established the Salvation Army rehabilitation workshop at Red Hill, Coral worked with the disabled at Wooloowin Mercy Centre, helped people experiencing mental health issues, taught life skills at the then New Farm Spastic Centre, and supported Lions projects. At a Salvation Army Christmas party, Coral’s children spoke with people going through treatment for drug and alcohol abuse — an intense learning experience.

For fifteen years from 1979, Brian was a Brisbane Alderman because he loved making a difference - like with Brian Hallinan Bikeway and SOWN, an incredible influence on revegetation in Queensland. When Brian retired, the family moved to Samford where he was a founding member of the Samford Lions Club in 1998, later a Life Member. Coral and Carmel Mazzeo, with Brian’s help, founded the CCC (Charity Craft Creators), to make clothes, quilts, beanies, toys etc for the community’s vulnerable. The CCC’s beautiful work has helped thousands of domestic violence survivors, homeless, the sick and the underprivileged for over twenty years.

Brian sadly passed away in 2021.

Coral said, “My proudest moments were helping Brian achieve his dreams, my family unit being so close, and helping others where it was most needed.”

Their selfless side-by-side service for well over sixty years, as well as their enduring love for each other, their family and mankind has made a better world.

There are just three TGIF events left for 2023 and we hope you can join us for our next event on 29th September Over the last 12 months we have served approx. 400 burgers, 400 desserts and over 160 cups of soup! Thanks to everyone who comes down to support our events.

We love seeing our returning customers and so many new faces that join us for a chat and a bite to eat. The TGIF events have been fortunate to have the ongoing support of a few musicians that take time to come down and entertain our guest, this adds a great vibe to the night.

We are gaining the support of more hall hirers with the Cedar Creek Public Hall hosting Yoga Retreat days, Women’s Retreat days, and now also hosting Creative Samford’s monthly meetings. Creative Samford (CSI) is a nonprofit group of artists of all types - ceramicists, painters, graphic designers, sculptors and mixed media. With a broad range of experience form beginners to working professionals, CSI exists to help all of its members to become better and braver in their artistic journey. They are meeting in our hall to practice their craft together and to learn and inspire one another. Why not drop in and see what they are about? They meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month between 9am and 1pm.

We are also looking forward to the Hall welcoming an upcoming wedding. Our hirers play an important role in the halls future and we just love seeing so much activity at the hall.

If you’re keen to offer a hand at our TGIF events just let us know. We run a very relaxed BBQ, we prepare the food and you make your burger your way! We love your support purchasing food and drinks and don’t forget you are welcome to bring additional nibblies and your special Friday sundowner to drink.

TGIF kicks off at 5.30pm with food for purchase until 7.30pm. After the kitchen closes, we hope you can stick around till 8.30pm and be entertained by our musicians.

CALENDAR GIRLS

- A story of courage, grief and hilarity.

Calendar Girls is based in real life – the story of a group of ordinary, delightful, wacky women in the UK in the 1980s who together did an amazing thing. The women – all members of their village’s “W.I” (Women’s Institute – similar to our CWA) bring out a calendar each year which features the usual historic buildings. They do not sell well. Having seen the sorts of calendars that actually hang in tradie workshops, garages, factories and sheds, the ladies of Knapeley WI wonder whether to have a change of subject. Their resolve is confirmed by the attendance at the underfunded local oncology unit of one of the characters. The unit needs a decent settee and that’ll cost money!

The play charts the journey they took – several of them very unwillingly at first – to overcome their anxieties to produce a calendar that people would buy - all to raise funds for the desperately underfunded oncology unit. The outcome is not what they predicted! The play is so funny, so sad and so uplifting that we are delighted to share

it with Samford Valley audiences.

Profits from Calendar Girls will be split between “Bravery Box” (a local children’s cancer support group) and Samford Support Network.

VALLEY’S OWN 2024 CALENDAR!

An exciting synergy has produced a local calendar.

Samford’s own, rather famous, wildlife and plants eco expert, Peter Storer, is gifting his talents - and 12 of his wonderful photos - to SPADEwerx Theatre’s latest fundraiser.

Samford will have its own 2024 Calendar coming out this October, featuring both Peter’s exquisite photos - all taken locallyas well as those who are involved with the “Calendar Girls” play. Profound thanks in advance to all the local businesses who are sponsoring the calendar.

You can buy the calendar at the “Calendar Girls” performances and also from selected outlets in Samford - TBA. We think people will like the results of this unusual combination!

Profits will go to Bravery Box.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN THE MUSIC WORLD

The Samford Community Singers are having a wonderful time rehearsing a delightful repertoire for their Spring Concert. How sad it was last year when Covid forced us to cancel our annual afternoon of entertainment.

Sunday October 1st is the date, 3pm at Farmers Hall. We will provide a program of choral music both from the group and from soloists and of course a sing along for all to join in.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club

On Friday 15th September, the club will host the Show Jumping, Saturday 16th will see the Combined Training and Dressage go ahead and Sunday 17th the Sporting Gymkhana will be held. Events commence at 8am each day.

Masters State Championships gives the opportunity for those riders 26 years and over, to compete in a State Championship which usually only caters for riders up to 25 years of age. Many of these riders spend the majority of the year travelling to events to allow their children to compete at Pony Club.

Organisers expect this event will be very successful, with over 200 entries from riders across Queensland competing in the various events.

OUT & ABOUT PILATES LIFESTYLE & WELLBEING

What is a Full Service Pilates Studio?

A full Service Pilates Studio offers group, private and semi-private classes, utilising all the equipment created by Joseph Pilates to enhance his Contrology work. Pilates exercises on the Mat versus on the Reformer, Cadillac or Split-Pedal Stability Chair™ offer a difference in the resistance provided to the body. When working out in a Mat Class, the only source of resistance is your own body weight against gravity, therefore by changing your position on the Mat, you can focus on the necessary muscles that have to work against gravity. A full service Pilates studio will also offer the use of the Arc Barrel, Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector plus other small equipment to complement and assist the Mat work.

The large pieces of Pilates equipment include the Cadillac (Tower), Split-Pedal Stability Chair™ and the Reformer. This

equipment all relies on springs, set at different strengths, to provide resistance to the body, depending on the direction of pull from the springs or ropes. In this way, the position of each exercise relates to the angle of the resistance from the springs rather than from gravity. Another major difference is that the resistance from the springs on the equipment can be altered to make it either lighter or heavier, whereas the resistance from gravity always remains constant.

There are no set rules to utilise or move from Mat or to any one of the larger pieces of equipment. This decision is reliant on the trained instructor’s knowledge to discern what is needed and how the work will best suit and benefit the client. The instructor must carefully consider the client’s strengths, weaknesses, posture, personal goals and needs, to create a balanced and well thought through program for each Group or Private lesson class. The Museum hosted a MBRC library, History 360 Festival Day on Sunday 27 August, in conjunction with Rotary Club of Samford. The event drew visitors from across City of Moreton Bay and beyond. Those who participated in the Rotary led Samford Village Heritage Walk thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially the sausage sizzle on their return to the Museum.

Information relating to Samford’s early history was sought recently by a film maker as he prepared a walkabout video of Samford. Only a couple of slips of the tongue during filming. Watch WalkaboutWithRob Brisbane’s Lost World - Welcome to SAMFORD VALLEY on YouTube.

I wonder how many of us, when we have shopped at Gleam O’ Dawn over the years, thought of the story behind the name. Clem Gillies, in his story “Gone Is My Valley” written in 2015, recalls the family’s arrival into the valley in 1946 and explains the origin of the name - Gleam O’ Dawn.

“A few weeks before the shift, we walked over the block. It was a showery early morning and, walking back towards the sun, the droplets of water glistened golden, and there was born the name “Gleam o’ Dawn”.

Clem’s story may be read at the Samford Museum and is one of many reminiscences being included in Samford Reminiscences Volume 7. Work on Volume 7 is progressing well thanks to Community Bank Samford’s recent grant.

Who’s Who @ SAMS? Meet Podge!

In 2020, looking to transition into early retirement, Podge joined SAMS to relax, work with like-minded people and drink coffee whenever he wanted (who wouldn’t aspire to that!). Soon, just like Robin Hood, he had collected a ragtag band of merry men who happened to be standing around, and from there he volunteered his time to teach them the finer details of his surprising craft. Now we can’t keep him down or shut him up. He’s become the dad jokes king, has the most eclectic music library any of us has ever seen or heard, and painstakingly built his own, fully-loaded workshop at home, which would put most fine furniture factories to shame. One thing’s for sure: his legacy will be how he’s quickly and quietly taken the skills and enthusiasm of the Woodies and would-be Woodies to the next level!

Want to know more about SAMS? Visit our website samfordshed.org.au, email samssecretary1@gmail.com, or drop in at 39 Showgrounds Drive, Highvale, next to the Showgrounds entrance.

You’d think being a supersonic F-111 aircraft mechanic would be the highlight of anyone’s career, but not for our Podge! Right now, he’s the “Woodies” Coordinator at Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS), and for good reason – not only does he love working with timber, but his creations are the finest quality and daringly unconventional. But it wasn’t always that way.

With his Air Force exploits and subsequent years making fuel with an Aussie owned oil refinery in Brisbane, his hidden passion and talent never got a chance to surface. In fact, working with wood didn’t come naturally to Podge at all, never having the need to make anything until 2014 when he moved to Samford. Then a Father’s Day gift of an abstract garden ornament started him down the woodworking rabbit hole, and the rest as they say is history.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB Doing Good

Maya Angelou, poet and author, said, “I’m convinced of this — good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they’re stones that don’t matter. As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good.”

Daily in our lovely valley, we see extraordinary ordinary people doing little things and some big things that make our

world better. The ladies of the Charity Craft Creators give so much to the vulnerable. Samford Support Network, Meals on Wheels and the Carers’ Foundation sustain many elderly and isolated, and those in need of connection. Our service organisations tirelessly work to help others. Individuals like the lovely Irish Grandma who donated flour and mixed fruit for cakes for Cuppa and a Chat, the boy who helped an elderly lady put groceries in her car, the woman who created tiny flower bunches as small gifts for MoW clients, the person who bought a weary ambo a cup of coffee, make a day special. Those who receive the smiles, the “Are You OK?”s, the little gifts and thoughtfulnesses, long remember that wonderful feeling of knowing someone sees them and cares.

On September 15 at 3ish, Ruth Campbell is giving a session of Chair Yoga at the SCHUB. This will be part of an ongoing monthly Chair Yoga program on the third Friday of the month. Everyone is welcome.

“Visit Childhood Through Story” is happening with Cuppa and a Chat on Friday 22 at 3ish. We will share children’s picture books stories — they are such fun they shouldn’t be limited to youngsters — as part of the Australia Reads initiative: Volume: Building a Reading Nation.

On September 29, the Good Stuff Ideas Forum is discussing “Doing Good”.

Samford Bowls Club

In the last edition of The Village Pump I wrote about our eldest playing member Joe, who is still playing at 93. Several of my fellow members commented, saying “We are not all this old!” Well done again Joe.

The 2023 Samford Ladies Novice Singles Champion is Denise Stevenson. Denise played a tense final against Cheryl Beaton to claim the title.

The Mac Patterson Shield final will be played at Samford on 28th September. This is a competition instigated by Samford to encourage friendships between the country clubs of Kilcoy, Woodford, Dayboro and Samford. We would all agree that it has done the job as we enjoy going to each of the clubs during the year to play on the different greens and to enjoy the country hospitality.

Thank you to the community for supporting our ‘Give Bowls A Go ‘evening on 8th September. This event introduces people who would like to know the basic way to play and may then go on to play barefoot bowls or at some time join a club. There will be a follow up of free coaching

on Saturday 16th September at 10.30am. Contact Janice: 0407 875 596.

Village Barefoot Bowls will commence on Thursday 5th October - Thursday 30th November. BBQ, raffles, cold beer and a fun night of bowls with teams of three. Contact Allan. 0429 919 486. If you would like to play but don’t have a team, we will find you one.

James Nash State High School, Gympie competed against eighteen other secondary schools to win for the third consecutive year, with Stretton State College second, St. Benedicts College third and Fraser Coast Anglican College fourth. Teams consist of two girls and two boys or mixed teams from the same school.

The World Bowls Championships were played at the Gold Coast from August 29th to September 10th.

HIGH TEA AT ST PAUL’S

A little bit of luxury came to St Paul’s in August. It’s not what you’d normally expect to find when entering a church but on a Saturday in August High tea came to St Paul’s. Given the response by attendees, there are distinct possibilities that it won’t be the last. Our thanks to Julie Sanderson who came up with the plan, collected the amazing crockery used and gathered a team of willing volunteers around her, making it an absolute success. A percentage of the takings will go to Anglicare’s Homelessness Services. We are very grateful for the positive comments that have been made about the event.

2024 will be the centenary year for St Paul’s. The first Anglican service to take place in Samford was on 30 December 1923 and the first church service in the original St Paul’s Church Samford was in the

SCHOOL HOLIDAY IDEAS

Samford Holiday Outdoor Experience On Again

The popular Samford Holiday Outdoor Experience activity program is being run again by Scouts Queensland 9am to 4pm on weekdays from 18 – 29 September. Drop off from 8am and pick-up until 5pm. Held at the Samford Scout Group activity centre in Cash Avenue North Samford, the program offers a wide variety of themed activities

as well as camp craft opportunities to get young people outside during this holiday period.

It provides a safe place for your children from 5-13 years to have fun while you work or take a break during the school holidays. The program is open to all children and gives them an opportunity to develop skills in areas they enjoy, solve problems and practice their social skills to make new friends.

The recreational environment helps kids to “learn by doing”, as they engage in games and activities such as scavenger hunts, hiking, swimming, canoeing, bush cooking, archery, outdoor shelter construction, pedal car races and lots of adventure games and learning of new skills.

The program can be flexible, meaning a child is more than welcome to attend for the program’s duration or alternatively, mix n’ match activity days to suit a child’s interests. Food and drink can be supplied by the organisers or provided by parents.

CHRONICLE CUP 2023

There has been a slight interruption to the regular Sunday Chronicle Cup games. The game set down for 20 August was won by the Mongrels on forfeit. Captains are very reluctant to forfeit a game, but in this case a Dayboro Cowboys team had made it to the rugby league grand final. Fathers Day is a traditional day off from cricket for all teams, but from Sunday 10 September games are scheduled for every Sunday at Highvale culminating in the grand final on 3 December.

After a somewhat late start to the match and a flip of the coin, Leg ends won the toss and sent Samford Village People in to bat. The bails were in the air early when Joey Lauze took the first wicket, but after that it was only the ball flying in the air with a great innings by Chris Neill (62) and Matt Bradley (58 not out). After the pair left, it was a new face in the Leg ends lineup, keeper David Cobbald, who made a very rare stumping for team Legends – maybe even a record for the books with Steve Simpson bowling.

Batter Aiden Halin stuck around hitting a few around the park, but Joey Lauze came back and took 3 more of his batting partners, while Andy Green picked up a couple along the way. It was a good score of all out for 191 for the new team in the competition this year, Samford Village People.

There was a quick turnaround from batting to bowling as no one had started the BBQ. Where is the team psychologist?

The Samford Village People had come to play and 3 early wickets were shared between Dane Forsyth, Matt Bradley and Ryan Beevers, leaving the top order with long walks back to the scorer.

But hope was at hand with Michael Schloss and David Cobbald putting together 60 not out and 47, with some pretty shots around the ground. But then in came SVP’s skipper, Scotty Gray, who had warmed up the arm for 5 overs in the field after years of lay off from Chronicle Cup, and along with help from Lachlan Ball and Ryan Beevers took the game away from the Leg ends.

It was close, but Samford Village People took their first win of the season by 30 runs. Andy Green (Leg ends captain) Samford Village People won by 30 runs.

WHICH SOUP WOULD YOU LIKE?

On Friday 1st September a choice of five delicious soups, made and served by our wonderful volunteers, was offered to clients of the SSN Social Networking Group at what has become our annual soup lunch. This was followed by a sweet treat, tea and coffee. Being the first day of Spring was a great way to say goodbye to winter. Our

clients had a wonderful time and enjoyed the sing along at the end. They are looking forward to the activities planned for the reminder of the year.

Thanks again to the lovely host and drivers and volunteers who make these social fortnightly events possible for our much cherished clients.

We are always looking for more volunteers both as drivers and to assist with the activities of the SSN. It is most rewarding as can be seen from a response from a volunteer to a thank you message for her assistance at the soup lunch. “I enjoyed myself very much. It is my pleasure to contribute to the network. Yes, I was tired after but such a nice tiredness!”

first event on club nights, so then the pups can relax and watch the older swimmers and hang out with their friends and enjoy a BBQ dinner. Friday nights are often a child’s weekly highlight.

Wondering what to expect at Club Night if you’re a newbie? You’ll be greeted by an experienced and friendly committee member and then introduced to our club educator, who will help your child by showing them where to present for a race, how to listen out for their marshalling, how to approach the blocks and what to do when the event starts – and other pro tips. New kids are introduced to some of our more experienced swimmers to help them feel welcome. Swimmers who have joined this club without knowing anyone soon feel part of the team.

Spring and summer are set to be scorchers. There’s no better sport in summer than swimming. Samford Stingrays are set to return to club nights on 6th October. Kick off celebrations will begin with their public open afternoon on Sunday 1st October, starting at 3pm. Come along for a free sausage sizzle, relays with mates, a warm-up race and have a chat to the organisers and to see what it is all about.

What really strikes you about this club is their focus on achieving your personal best, not on who won the race. It’s a very supportive environment for swimmers of all capabilities including those who are new to racing where they can learn the ropes. It’s a perfect place for children to develop their confidence. Samford Stingrays Pups have had kids as young as age 3 start in the 12.5m races. The pups races are our

Spectators can expect some awesome competition from the seniors this season. Insiders have seen several of the team training hard, side by side, over the last several weeks. How tight these teammates are during training says a lot about the ethos of Samford Stingrays. They give each other encouragement, tips and plenty of laughs between swim sets.

Come and see what we are all about on our public open day from 3-5pm on Sunday 1 Octoer 2023. If you have any questions about swim club, then please feel free to email registrar@samfordswimclub.com.au

Community Upgrades

Work has commenced on Mount Samson Road and Eatons Crossing Road safety upgrade. Many across the community would have seen that works and surveying has started at various points across these roads. It is through community strong feedback that the final design will see the upgrade and safety improvements of areas along this corridor.

Key upgrades and features will include:

• Signalising the Eatons Crossing Road and Lilley Road intersection, Warner.

• Widening Strathpine-Samford Road just west of Queen Elizabeth Drive to Gibbons Road.

• Installing a wide centre line treatment to provide additional separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions.

• Shoulder widening to provide additional trafficable area to pull over, assist emergency vehicles to pass, accommodate wide vehicles and greater separation between cars and bike riders.

• Providing safety barriers at various locations and removing roadside hazards (including necessary vegetation clearing).

• Modifications at several intersections including dedicated right-turn lanes at Dawneta Court, Albion Road, Lascelle Court, Boland Court, Hodge Road, Lergessner Road, Lawson Road, Alpine Drive and Gibbons Road.

• Installing a dedicated left-turn lane at Clear Mountain Road, Hodge Road, Lergessner Road, Alpine Drive and Gibbons Road to separate turning vehicles from through-traffic lanes.

• Improved bike rider safety with 2m wide shoulders marked with bike symbols and intersection conflict points marked with green paint and bike symbols.

• Provision of new police enforcement bays at identified locations.

As works progress, there may be slight delays in your day-to-day journeys, however, these works will provide numerous benefits for our community, including improved road user safety, increased traffic efficiency and provide a safer alternative for active transport.

For more information on the project visit https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/ strathpine-samford-road-route-safetyproject.

Cost Of Living Relief

Climate Smart Energy Rebate: Eligible Queenslanders can receive between $300 to $1000 to purchase energy efficient washing machines, fridges, dryers, dishwashers, air-conditioners and hot water systems. Applications opened Monday 4 September, with the program closing once funding is exhausted.

Australia

Reads wants to build a reading nation by encouraging people to read more books, more often. A comprehensive National Reading Survey was completed in 2021 and findings included that approximately 2.3 million Australians read and write below the international standard required for participation in work, education and society; and how social media reduced many people’s ability to sustain concentration when reading a long text.

To help overcome reading challenges, Australia Reads has organised a free online symposium dedicated to building a stronger reading culture in Australia. VOLUME: Building a Reading Nation is open to all. Experts in reading as well as specialists in behaviour change, research, health and social campaigning will discuss how to ‘bring the book world together - to build a reading nation’.

This all happens on Thursday 21 September. Find out more https:// australiareads.org.au/volume/

To find out eligibility criteria, and frequently asked questions, visit https://www.qld.gov.au/housing/ home-modifications-energy-savings/ climate-smart-energy-savers/about

Electricity Rebate: Queenslander’s are paying less for their electricity through the cost of living rebate. This rebate will see Queensland houses receive one of the following rebates:

• $700 rebate on electricity bills for vulnerable households, plus a further $372 through the Queensland Electricity Rebate Scheme. Meaning the total rebate for Queenslanders doing it toughest is $1072.

• $550 rebate on the electricity bills of all other Queensland Households.

Many in our community should have seen the rebate credited to their recent electricity bill; however, exact timing is specific to the retailer. To maximise on the savings and support services that are available to you, visit https://www.queenslandsavers.qld. gov.au/
