Samford State School held their annual Easter Bonnet Parade in the last week of the term. How wonderful to see all the children get involved in making their hats and sharing the joy and laughter with their classmates and older year level buddies. Deputy Principal John Mauch had all the kids yelling ‘Happy Easter’ to see if they could break the record for being the ‘loudest’. Also fabulous to see so many parents come and watch the parade and share all the excitement!

ANZAC DAY

A big day is planned at the Samford Museum on ANZAC Day, Tuesday 25th April, from 9am to 2pm. You are all invited to enjoy the events on this special day including a huge display of relevant information, photographs and stories relating to our local ancestors who served in the two World Wars.

Hear what the Australian Remembrance Army is doing to attend to the unmarked graves of soldiers from World War One here in Queensland. One of our Highland Soldier Settlers, Henry Randall was one such soldier whose unmarked grave is at Lutwyche Cemetery. These soldiers made many sacrifices during their service to give us a better life.

Animals such as horses and dogs also played a considerable role in the success of our endeavours in these wars. You can also learn about the Comfort Fund and the Land Army which operated during the war years.

Charlie Nolan our War Researcher, will be present to present his slide show giving a brief history on the ANZAC Day traditions, such as The Last Post, The Ode, The Red Poppy, The Rising Sun Badge and The Puggaree (the hat band on the Slouch Hat). Charlie will also help you to research your own defence family members. There will also be a Treasure Hunt for the children.

Morning Tea will be on sale, with good Aussie fruit cake and freshly made damper. At lunch time, savour our sausage sizzle.

Entry is FREE on ANZAC Day –however your donation would be gratefully accepted. Please contact Bev on 0405 104 331 for further information.

SEASON WRAP

It’s a wrap for Samford Stingrays 22/23 competition season. On Friday 24 March, in place of their lycra togs, the team put on their party clothes and headed to Arana Hills Leagues Club for their Club Championship awards night.

What really sets Samford Stingrays apart from other clubs is the enthusiastic leadership. From volunteers to the committee and most confidently for the future, the leadership of their senior swimmers. The night kicked off with multiple thank you’s to those families who contribute each week in big and small ways to make sure the swimmers are on the blocks every Friday night and at away meets.

Stingrays President, Anna Wilson announced her retirement from the role and has called upon the families of younger swimmers to throw their swim caps in the

ring for hers and other committee roles. Anna has a heart the size of the planet and has put in 8 years in various roles with Stingrays and, in thanks, was awarded Stingrays Lifetime Membership, an accolade awarded only three times before since the club’s inception 30 years ago.

It takes courage to climb onto the swim blocks every week and race against your personal times and your swimming competitors. Every swimmer in the club deserves recognition for that.

Some swimmers had particularly excellent seasons, and the following awards reflected that.

• Female Club Champion – Grace Christensen

• Male Club Champion – Nate Hodgetts

• Female Distance Champion – Olivia Shea

• Male Distance Champion – Noah Ritchie

• Carol Bizzell Award of Excellence –Nate Hodgetts

• Jackie Phillips Cup – Hudson Poppy

• Belle Property Most Spirited Stingray Family – McKeever/Bizzell Family

If you’d like to join Samford Stingrays for their 23/24 season which kicks off in Term 4, please follow the ‘Samford Swim Club’ Facebook page or visit their website. A club never operates on fees alone. It relies on the hearts and generosity of their members and volunteers.

Nestled amongst the trees on Camp Mountain Road is where you will find Samford Community Kindergarten, a notfor-profit organisation providing a rich, play based program for children in the year prior to Prep.

Community is a core component of Samford Kindy which is guided by a volunteer Parent Committee. Working bees, fundraisers, grants and donations all play a crucial part in maintaining the kindergarten and its resources.

The teachers at Samford Kindy have created a welcoming and nurturing environment, with flexible spaces for the children to discover, create and explore in. This year’s Kindy groups have just completed a term of learning, growing, and connecting with one another. The first weeks of Term 1 focussed on routines and establishing positive relationships. The children engaged in group time activities, music and movement and many opportunities for play, where personal interests, skills and ideas have been supported and extended. The mornings were spent barefoot in the generous

outdoor area. The children investigated the environment and sustainability in a hands-on way, saving food scraps for the compost and worm farm, planting vegetable and sunflower seeds and watering them to help them grow, observing the “tickle” bees in the native beehive and tasting the honey produced.

A highlight of Term 1 was a visit from Geckoes Wildlife. The children were introduced to a variety of Australian animals including a green tree frog, squirrel glider, tawny frogmouth owl and a baby saltwater crocodile, that will grow up to 8 metres long!

A special celebration concluded the term, with the children inviting a family member to join them for a picnic and an afternoon of Easter art and craft activities. We can’t wait to share what the children at Samford Community Kindergarten get up to next!

What on Earth?

Over one billion people support Earth Day. It is held on 22 April each year and in 2023 its theme is ‘Invest in the earth’. What on earth does that really mean we should do to show our climate consciousness and truly value the planet?

The Earth Day website www.earthday. org sends clear messages to businesses, investors and financial markets on how to drive value for their institutions and society through green innovation and practices. And governments are encouraged to incentivize the community, businesses and institutions to create and innovate while advancing our interests and creating a more equitable and sustainable global economic system.

In Samford, we have been working away on this for quite a few years and our local government authority is almost ready to launch its new sustainability policy which will add to the impetus for climate consciousness and the green economy.

The Samford & Districts Progress &

Protection Association (SDPPA) has established a Sustainable Samford Working Group in an effort to combine the work of the many groups in the Valley that have a special energy to build an even more climate conscious community.

For over 12 years our locally grown Green Street and Sustainable Business Network have been prompting and supporting what on earth we can do to invest in our planet. Go to www.greenstreet.org au to find out more about what to do and contact Green Street on info@greenstreet.org.au or mobile

0407 190 162 if you’d like to ‘invest in the earth.’

Sacrifice for wellbeing

On ANZAC Day especially, we remember those who sacrificed for us all. At times that has been a sacrifice of life. At other times it has meant a sacrifice of wellbeing for those who served and for those in their families and circle of friends.

We may often take for granted the quality of the lifestyle we live and the relatively low stress, low trauma experienced in our day to day existence when compared to the extraordinary challenges of those in our defence forces.

Members of the Samford Sustainable Business Network and Green Street join with the Samford community to remember that our service people have sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice, their own wellbeing so that we may enjoy ours in our families, in our businesses, in our communities and in ourselves.

On ANZAC Day and all other days – ‘Lest We Forget’.

EARTH DAY –Invest in Our Planet

Saturday 22 April is a chance to pick up a shovel, recycle some cans and buy green at the supermarket for Earth Day. This year’s theme is Invest in Our Planet, and the team at EARTHDAY.ORG invites everyone on the planet to get involved in environmental protection through a number of ways.

Increasing climate and environmental literacy is one focus this year, aiming to create environment-focused jobs and build a green consumer market. For our local schools which are luckily surrounded by natural bushland, teaching kids about respectful environmental practices is embedded in the curriculum, allowing for children to experience and engage with environmentally-friendly practices from a young age.

Planting more trees is another idea to get involved on the day. EARTHDAY.ORG works with global partners to reforest areas in dire need of rehabilitation, including areas with some of the world’s communities most at-risk from climate change and environmental degradation. The group also conduct broad tree planting in the wake of environmental disasters.

Fighting fast fashion is one more way Earth Day can be kept top of mind over the weekend. EARTHDAY.ORG notes that behind every piece of clothing in a store, there is an industry stripping the planet of its limited resources and exploiting the labour force that works in its garment factories. Tremendous waste characterises the fast fashion industry as it depletes healthy soil, contaminates fresh water sources, pollutes the air and damages eco-systems and the

health of their biodiversity.

On the flip side, sustainable fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. It looks to reorient the industry and consumers toward sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, marketing and consumption.

If you’re thinking of becoming involved in 2023 you will not be alone; each year more than 1 billion citizens participate in Earth Day.

“In 2023 we must come together again in partnership for the planet. Businesses, governments and civil society are equally responsible for taking action against the climate crisis and lighting the spark

to accelerate change towards a green, prosperous and equitable future,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY. ORG.

For anyone looking to take further global action on Earth Day, a number of petitions are available to sign electronically at EARTHDAY.ORG. There is also the opportunity to donate money towards trees being planted in ecosystems that need them most.

If you’re looking at something to do closer to home, this is a great day to plant a tree, switch off unused electricity and keep up our excellent recycling track record.

BANNERMAN CUP 26 MARCH 2023

A PERFECT DAY FOR CRICKET

Sunday was a fitting celebration of the legacy of David Bannerman. Highlands Recreation Reserve had a decidedly carnival atmosphere. Generators made all sorts of things possible: gelato and EFTPOS! Through the efforts of committed volunteers, there were multiple shaded areas under marquees where people could catch up.

People rolled up. There was a big crowd in attendance to hear from local national, state and council representatives Peter Dutton, Nikki Boyd and Darren Grimwade talk about their experiences with Dad and how he’d contributed to the community. Proceedings concluded with the official announcement of the naming of the Bannerman Oval, that expanse of grass that hosts competition and comradery through the year.

Then on to the cricket. Two teams were picked out of a hat: Red and Blue. The forms and conventions of cricket in these parts are so well-formed it felt strange coming up with something new. How long should this game go for? Who’s playing for who? What score do you retire at?

The beginning was frantic as the rules were written as we went. Shai and I opened the batting, fittingly facing the bowling of Ben Winn. The first wicket fell when Mel Wilkinson fielded Shai’s shot and ran me out well short of my ground. Charlie Geddes looked likely until holing out deep to Ben’s bowling. Chris Binkhorst didn’t trouble the scorer and then Andrew Firns was out to one of the best catches that will likely ever be taken on Bannerman Oval. Off balance right on the boundary, Neil Morey stuck his left hand out and snared the ball. After David Hegarty was given out, the Reds were 6 down for hardly anything. There were some worries expressed, this game might not go long enough to sell all the raffle tickets.

Will Conway and Harry Stavarakis brought some stability to the innings, both chalking up 30s until Will was sharply stumped by Ben Jordin. Two generations of the Workmans went to the crease, with Dean, Percy and Reese extending the innings up to 101. A respectable total, almost seeing out the allocated 20 overs. We were going to have a game of it.

Father and son, Jordan and Peter Lane opened the Blue batting until there was another run out. Ben Jordin, Nic Stanley and Malcolm Bannerman all made contributions

– hitting boundaries, seeing out Harry’s bowling – doing all those things that build an innings. The Red bowling was tight, keeping the asking run rate reasonable. Then Steve Pickering came into bat and started hitting. With impeccable timing, he hit boundaries around the field, not afraid to hit over the fielders. It came down to the last over, needing 7 runs to win. Pickers did it with style, hitting a 6 to win the game for the Blue team.

A shower of rain came over the grounds, bringing happy cricketers together and creating a reflective atmosphere. It was a day that Dad would have appreciated. It felt good for everyone involved.

A heartfelt thanks to Tim Nelson, Chairman of Trustees for the huge effort in bringing it together. There was a massive team of people involved in pulling it off: from selling raffle tickets in the village to putting up the marquees. It was a special day in bringing people together, exactly what Dad wanted.

Memorial Game at Bannerman Oval

A great day was had by all who attended the Naming Ceremony and Memorial game on Sunday 26th March. We were fortunate to have all three levels of government present for the Naming Ceremony - federal member Peter Dutton, state member Nikki Boyd and local member Darren Grimwade, who all spoke of their memories of David and his impact on our local community.

The trustees would like to thank MBRC for the new sign that was in place for the day and the expediency of getting the oval named after David. It was a different format for the game - with the teams being made up of all who love cricket, it was decided to have the Red & Blue teams play for the inaugural Bannerman Cup. The game was played with great enthusiasm and went down to the last over, which saw some lusty hitting by the Blue team to win the day.

Nikki Boyd was present to award the trophy to the Blue team, give the medallions to all the Blue players and help in the raffle draws. All raffle winners have been happily notified. A big thank you to all who bought tickets that helped raise much

needed funds for the ground; to all who helped with the set up and pull down, who stayed to watch the game and enjoy the food and drinks. Thank you to Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank) for the loan of the EFTPOS machines, marquees and donation, without which we would not have had the success we were able to achieve. We would also like to acknowledge these Samford businesses (right) who very generously supported our fundraising efforts for the day.

Understanding Sugar.

Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for your body and brain. But as the saying goes: too much of a good thing can be harmful. It’s scientifically proven that a diet high in sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.

How Does Sugar A ect Your Teeth?

Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums.

Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out:

Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings –anything high in fructose.

What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health?

- Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste

- Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth

- Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean

- Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment

The Bottom Line

Healthy gut = healthy mouth. Say YES to a diet rich in..

- Plants and vegetables.

- Lean meats (limit red & processed meats)

- Unsaturated fats

- Vegetable oils

- Nuts

- Full fat fairy products

- Consume water after every meal to help wash away lingering food

Say NO to diets that are high in fructose and refined sugars and low in fibre.

Our Autumn Plants Market at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 1 April was a huge success. By 8am there were 93 trestle tables in the barn brimming with native plants, which started disappearing quickly as soon as the first customers arrived. Samford Branch sold all its 230 plants by lunchtime, which is a great reward for all the hard work put in by our propagation team over the past several months. Our stock was boosted by a last-minute donation of native orchids from member Roman Buzianczuk and these were snapped up avidly.

Total sales for the market were up by a massive 30% over the previous year, which smashed the record for all locations (NPQ also runs markets throughout the year at Logan, Belmont, Gold Coast and Rosewood: see website npq.org.au). Detailed analysis showed that the average price per plant hadn’t changed much, nor had the average purchase per customer. Instead, the increase was solely down to the increase in the number of paying customers.

So, we thank the Samford community for supporting this fundraising event so enthusiastically. We really appreciate it and hope that your plants thrive in their new homes. For those who missed it, we hope to see you next year.

Big turn up needed ... Monthly bushcare

Unfortunately, our March bushcare was cancelled at the last minute because of approaching thunderstorms, so we need a big turn up of volunteers from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 16 April to catch up on the lost work. We will be planting a new area at the top of the river bank (pictured right), as well as dealing with 2 months worth of emerging weeds, so there is a lot to do. Just a reminder for existing volunteers to complete the annual online WHS induction.

New volunteers are always welcome, including someone to provide afternoon tea using the Eco-Corridor equipment (vacuum flasks, cups, spoons, etc.). In the meantime, BYO and join us at the picnic table afterwards.

Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday 7 March, the Samford Landcare team organised a walk to pick up litter, starting from John Scott Park, then along the Avenue of Honour, past the soccer fields, crossing under the road to return via track past the archery and dog park. Along the way there were information stops, including

our own Eco-Corridor where participants heard a 5-minute talk on the project before walking along the Eco-Trail towards their next destination.

Bird survey

On 26 March we recorded 59 species. Some summer visitors were still hanging around: a young Oriental Dollarbird was perched on the powerlines, we heard both Channel-billed Cuckoo and Cicadabird, and saw a lone White-throated Needletail overhead. Other highlights included seeing

New arthritis treatment available in time for winter

A new monthly injectable for osteoarthritis has arrived in Australian veterinary clinics. Dr. Jess Pickett, Dayboro Village Vets’ newest veterinarian, said that Beransa offers a potential solution for dogs experiencing osteoarthritis and decreased quality of life.

“Older dogs commonly experience osteoarthritis, and it may look like increased sitting during walks, taking more time to get up and lay down, or being more irritable towards other dogs and family members. In fact, more than 80% of the dogs that are referred to me for behavioural concerns have underlying pain as a contributing factor,” she said.

“Osteoarthritis is not curable but there is plenty that can be done to identify and manage pain, and to modify lifestyle. This treatment works like your dog’s naturally made antibodies to reduce pain signals. It can be given in conjunction with other medication meaning we can develop a comprehensive comfort-focused senior care program for our ageing patients; my geriatric Golden Retriever, Oscar, (pictured)

has just started on it!”

Dr. Jess stressed that any dog can develop arthritis, and knowing the signs will help pet owners determine if veterinary attention is required.

“Winter can be a difficult time for dogs with arthritis,” she said. “Aside from annual health check-ups and good veterinary care, dog owners can also modify their pet’s lifestyle to help them cope better in the cold. This may include bringing them inside at night if they sleep outside during the warmer months, adding raised bedding, non-slip floor coverings, maintaining a healthy weight to avoid excess pressure on joints and including massage or acupuncture treatments in their healthcare regime.”

If your dog is showing signs of stiffness and soreness, unexplained changes in mood, and hasn’t responded to other osteoarthritis treatments, talk to your veterinarian about Beransa.

FRIDAY AT THE SCHUB

Emergency First Aid

Although some of Samford district live within the village and close to medical services, most of us live on acreage or rural properties where getting quick emergency help is sometimes a problem. From time to time, emergencies happen. We know that with stroke, heart attack, snake bite and serious wounds, timing is vital. What can we do until our highly skilled first responders and paramedics arrive? What do we definitely not do in our state of heightened anxiety, shock or distress?

On April 21st at 3pm, Nurse Margie is going to give us simple, practical advice on how to recognise and what to safely do in the case of stroke, heart attack and snake or spider bite.

On April 14th, Samford Scribblers starts at noon, followed by Crafting Kindness at 2ish. We are slowly building a good collection of scarves and rugs for the homeless to be sent away in May. If anyone would like to knit or crochet rugs, beanies or scarves at home to add to the collection, we can provide some lovely, donated wool - great project for busy children’s fingers.

Our Cuppa and Chat starts each week at 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome.

Kids Get to The Root Cause of Wellbeing

Helping kids understand the fundamentals of healthy living is key to helping them learn in the classroom, which is why Samford State School has partnered with children’s health program The Root Cause.

up for a successful day/week/month/year of learning,” Samford State School Deputy Principal, John Mauch said.

“The Root Cause empowers our children to have a positive life-long relationship with food and sleep, which underpins optimum health, behaviour and academic performance.”

The program will include workshops for students, parents and staff, plus classroom resources, professional development and an online portal for families to access from home.

Kids will also undertake a Mad Food Science incursion in Term 2 allowing them to get involved in hands-on activities to reinforce the key health messages delivered.

The incursion encourages students to get their hands dirty through experiments, observations, and discussions to reinforce key health messages.

For the teachers and school staff, the program will provide data on food and waste at the school, which can be used to develop and enhance the school’s strategic plan. Parents will also have an opportunity to learn through a parent-focused information seminar.

Engaging with The Root Cause supports local, with the program led by Alana Maxwell, a Samford-based nutritionist supporting schools, children and teenagers to improve behaviour, learning, social and emotional wellbeing.

For anyone interested in also becoming engaged with The Root Cause, a series of recipes to try at home are available at: therootcause.com.au/recipes

A considerable number of organisations including some major community groups, have come on board to present the opportunities available to Seniors, to get the absolute most out of living after retirement.

We are also very grateful for the support and encouragement given to us by two of our local members of Parliament, Tim Mander and Peter Dutton. Having our community leaders behind us is very important.

The theme of the Expo - As the Sun Goes Down the Fun Begins - has captured the imagination of the exhibitors and we look forward to meeting you all on 26th May. Further announcements on the exciting and interesting experiences this will bring, will be made prior to the event. www. hillschamber.org.au

WONGAM KOALA GULLY PROJECT

Pine Rivers Catchment Association (PRCA) has received funding for the Wongam Koala Gully (WKG) project with the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Minister for the Environment and Water, and David Smith MP, Member for Bean announcing the Koala Conservation and Protection Community Grants earlier this year.

For this project PRCA has partnered with the local Traditional Owners, Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC), Griffith University, Koala Action Inc (KAI), Qld Koala Crusaders (QKC), Bunya Residents Association (BRA) and Landcare community groups to act toward creating a corridor of high-quality habitat connecting two separate Koala metapopulations found in Bunyaville and Samford Conservation Parks.

The WKG project intends to deliver a high-quality habitat for koalas through the local parks, the residential area and along the Wongam Creek and adjacent waterways. The project also aims to deliver a methodology that can facilitate the opportunity for residents, koalas and other wildlife to coexist.

Amongst the project outcomes are:

• Improve the quality, extent and connectivity of the koala habitat along the 5.4km corridor and plant approximately 17,000 koala food trees.

• Support an ongoing program to maintain the Wongam Creek Gully for koala movement by leveraging the Moreton Bay Regional Council asset maintenance planning complemented by local volunteer bush-care organisations and the local BRA.

• Monitor the Koala usage of the corridor via applying an innovative artificial intelligence program based on applied research.

• Community and school education programs.

• Promote the protection and recovery of the listed koala.

• Coordinate weed control over the corridor area of approximately 166,000 square metres, to encourage the corridor to be utilised for koala’s migration between Bunyaville Conservation Park and Samford Conservation Park and provide a reduction in pressure on the listed koala populations currently living in isolation in the two parks.

• Coordinate pest control (feral cats, others).

Dr Trish Moloney

Dr Carol McPhail

Dr Ammara Chaudhry

Dr Michelle Ledbury

Dr David O’Regan

The PRCA team will schedule numerous community events associated with this project and we would like to invite everyone to keep an eye on how to get involved with the Koala activities planned in the year ahead.

If you would like to be considered for the broad array of community engagement to achieve the outcomes listed above, please have a chat with our Project Director, Aurelia Noran at manager@prca.org.au or call her at 0423174215.

Last week I met an old friend who told me that he’d given up on life. “What’s the point, I’m old, retired and no longer any use to anybody”. It’s a scene that is played out so often in so many places around Australia. A man has worked all his life and has all those years of knowledge and skill and now suddenly he is “put out to pasture”. No wonder there is a loneliness pandemic amongst older men in our society. The saddest part is that this loneliness can lead to depression, substance abuse and even to self-harm.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way. The Mens Shed Movement was born out of a desire by men to address the issues of loneliness and depression and to re-ignite that spark of purpose and usefulness that many men thought had fizzled out.

At Samford Area Mens Shed (we call it SAMS), it’s not just about what you do, but also who you do it with. True: it is a place where men can learn new skills or re-hone old skills again and it is a place where men can engage in all kinds of hands-on activities such as woodwork, metalwork, art and even photography, but it also a place where men can enjoy friendship, fellowship and fire up again with a new vigour and enthusiasm for life.

Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along to the SAMS Shed on any Tuesday morning at 9am and see what SAMS is all about. We’re at the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale - just near the high voltage power tower.

SAMFORD’S LOCAL FAUNA

BLUE TIGER (TIRUMALA HAMATA)

This striking black and blue butterfly with a wingspan of about 70mm is most often noticed in late summer when it may migrate in large numbers from its rainforest ‘home’ (e.g. Mounts Nebo and Glorious) to spend the dry season in coastal rainforests or on islands where it overwinters in crevices. This species also used to be abundant in the Brigalow Belt further inland, but is all but extinct there now because of extensive habitat clearance.

The adult is long lived and can be a strong, direct flier when migrating, but will also flutter slowly when seeking nectar or host plants. As well as visiting flowers for nectar, male butterflies can sometimes be seen extracting toxic alkaloids from the leaves of Monkey Rope Vine (Parsonsia straminea), which deters birds and other predators from eating them. The female seeks out the host plant Corky Milk Vine Secamone elliptica, which is a twining vine found on the edges of our local rainforests and in wetter eucalypt woodlands, on which to lay her yellow eggs.

The rather striking larvae to 55mm are greenish grey with black and grey bands. The pupa (chrysalis) hangs from the underside of a leaf and is pale green with a prominent row of golden dots about a quarter of the way down.

Butterfly numbers are well down in 2023 owing to the dry conditions, but it is still worth keeping your eye out for this local beauty and sending your sightings to The Village Pump.

The Multicultural Peace Fire at Kupidabin Wilderness

Traditional Protocol

Participants are smudged (cleansed) with Sage before entering the Fire Circle.

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Garumngar people, Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather tonight and pay my respects to their Elders past and present. I extend that respect to First Nation and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We have an area of land on our property which is protected under the State Government (E.P.A.) Environmental Protection Act as a Rare Eco Region and it is Maureen’s vision to keep this land in its natural state and to honour the land as a Place for Multicultural Inter Tribal Gatherings. The land was blessed by Aboriginal Elder Uncle Tex Chapman (now deceased) representing the Garumngar Tribe who were original inhabitants. We honour ourselves on this land and invite members of all cultures to join us to develop the land for cultural activities in keeping with the environment.

On the 7th day of each calendar month, we hold our Multicultural ‘Peace Fire’. The Fire Ceremonies are an old North American Indian tradition. The chiefs of 32 tribes gathered to smoke the peace pipe to make peace between the tribes. Ashes from the fire they shared were distributed amongst the chiefs and taken back to their tribes. Peace Fire ceremonies were started in Queensland at Tuchekoi near Gympie when Beautiful Painted Arrow (Joseph Rael) came to Queensland and re-kindled the traditional idea of the Peace Fire.

The Peace Fire is traditionally built in a square using a total of 32 sticks, representing the 32 original tribes, with 8 in each of 4 piles crossing over each other in layers. These sticks represent the Eight Sacred Directions: Within, Without, Above, Below, East, South, West and North.

Ashes from the fire in Tuchekoi were brought to the Lyell Deer Farm at Mt. Samson by Toki McDonald in 2005 and the fire has been lit every month since and now at Kupidabin.

The Peace Fire Ceremony is to honour worldwide peace and is commemorated on the 7th day of each Month at 7pm, performed on all continents. There are

DID YOU KNOW?

approx 80 fires around the world with 22 here in Australia. Others have since been started in Victoria and New Zealand.

The Fires start in New Zealand and are lit at 7pm, following the timeline around the world to end up in Hawaii 22 hours later. Consequently, as the earth rotates, there is a constant stream of thoughts and dedication rising from the traditionally constructed fires with Prayers of Peace for our loved ones and for peace around the world.

I will open the circle by calling in the Spirits from the directions. We will meditate while the fire burns down, casting our prayers and intentions into the fire using wild tobacco grown on Kupidabin land. Soft flute or drum music can be played (optional). Then our Talking Stick is passed around for participants to share their thoughts and visions if they wish.

We close the circle with a prayer - It is with much love and gratitude that we thank Great Spirit for the opportunity to hold our Peace Fire again. It is with love that we have sent forth our Prayers for Peace and we also know they will be heard.

AHOH!

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

Road Works Update

There is certainly a lot of activity happening at a number of locations along Mount Samson Road lately, which is great to see after delays to works which has generated a lot of feedback over many months. There are four projects currently underway at various stages of completion.

Rectification works to the guardrail at the Mt Samson Road/Postmans Track/ Kobble Creek Road intersection, and the completion of the road resurfacing should be completed by the end of April. The road resealing between Postmans Track and Kobble Creek Road has had one seal coat, and once guardrail works are completed at the intersection, the final seal along this section of Mt Samson Road will also be completed, anticipated the end of April, early May.

Works between Old Mt Samson Road and Marshall Lane have so far seen a holding seal applied to the road. There is extensive kerb and channel works to be carried out, asphalting here should happen around August/September. This particular section

of road through the cutting, historically holds water, leading to potholes. By fixing the pavement, applying asphalt and making changes to the current drainage, this problem area should be greatly improved.

The last section of asphalt works to be completed is around 144m of road between 1876 and 1894 Mt Samson Road. I know the community will be pleased to know that line marking will be completed to all these sections of Mt Samson Road, with the exception of the area between Old Mt Samson Road and Marshall Lane where line marking will take place once the final asphalt coat has been carried out.

I appreciate the level of frustration felt by the community during the delay in works and reduction in speed limits. I travel this area on a regular basis and like you, look forward to being able to travel along these sections of Mt Samson Road knowing that they will be safer for all road users.

HOW DOES STRENGTH TRAINING ASSIST YOUNG PEOPLE?

• Protect muscles and joints from sports-related injuries.

• Improve performance in almost any sport.

Strength training isn’t only for athletes.

If your child isn’t interested in sports, strength training can still:

• Strengthen your child’s bones.

• Promote healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

• Help maintain a healthy weight.

• Boost your child’s confidence and self-esteem.

In short, there are really no downsides to introducing kids to strength training at a young age as long as it is in a controlled and supervised environment. There is plenty of research to support the physical advantages of strength training at a young age, but it’s also proven to lead to a greater overall interest in fitness, which can pay lifelong dividends.

Have you ever heard the old tale that strength training at a young age can stunt growth? Well, we’re here to tell you different!

Strength training as early as 7 or 8 years old can greatly benefit your child. However, it is important to not confuse strength training with weightlifting, bodybuilding, or powerlifting. For kids, it is important to first focus on proper technique and safety when performing exercises. Building this foundation enables children to progress to exercises with light resistance or harder movement patterns.

But what are the benefits of strength training for kids?

When performed properly, strength training can:

• Increase your child’s muscle strength and endurance.

Congratulations to all of our riders who travelled to Bundaberg for the State Pony Club Championships. Charlie placed 4th overall on destiny in the Equitation, Charlotte 5th in the 90cm Showjumping, Ella taking home a 6th on Spirit for 60cm. Chloe and Frankie competed in tough groups representing their club. They did a great job also cheering on their pony club friends and teammates.

games and sporting fun on their ponies.

Congratulations Caitlin for taking home her first Championship rug. April Musters: 16th and 30th at 8am. All welcome.

of our past by disrespecting and mistreating the men and women who proudly wear the uniform in defence of our flag, values and country.

Vale David Bannerman

Many in our community will be deeply saddened by the passing of David Bannerman, former president of SDPPA, and a man who made a significant contribution to our local community.

The Cedar Creek Public Hall has been an iconic gathering place in the district since 1925. The Hall remains a widely recognised part of the area thanks to the ongoing support from the community and the halls members.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to unwind, connect with the community, and support the Cedar Creek Public Hall at the next TGIF. We hope to see you there!

DICKSON NOTES

I hope you were able to enjoy a break over Easter and the school holidays and are ready and recharged for a few big months ahead.

David was a tireless advocate for local causes and worked diligently to improve the lives of those around him. His contributions to the community, including the restoration of the Farmers Hall on Main St, the recycling stations at the Samford Tip, and the Chronicle Cup cricket match will be remembered for years to come. On Sunday 26 March, together with family members, local representatives and cricketers, we celebrated David’s community service and officially renamed Highvale Oval to Bannerman Oval. I send my sincerest condolences to his wife Helen and his three sons, Gavin, Keith and Malcolm.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is our chance to let our servicemen and women – past and present – know that their service and sacrifice is remembered, appreciated and honoured. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam war. Between 1962 and 1972 almost 60,000 Australians served in the conflict, and we pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice as well as those veterans’ still with us, many of whom continue to bear the wounds seen and unseen. We must never repeat the mistakes

CHEERS TO THAT!

You might recall a few editions ago we introduce you to John Clark and his hobby of brewing his own beer – a skill he has been honing for over 20 years. John was keen to connect with other likeminded home brewers, offering a ‘share and sip’ get together for anyone interested. Great to report that in late March, nine keen brewers came together for a few hours at John’s place to share knowledge, tips and tricks – 5 new brewers, I past brewer (happy to get back into it) 1 novice brewer and 2 experienced brewers.

John shared his expertise, showing the group how he puts down a new brew, the advantages of using tank and filtered water, and the added advantages of using different types of hops. There was a lot of consideration for the aromas of the four different hops on hand. The benefit of a hot

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I would like to make the general public aware of how the government is treating seniors on family properties. A week before Christmas I had a letter from Centrelink advising my husband and myself that our assets had increased in value and that our pension of $550 a fortnight each (on which we were able to live comfortably and pay our household bills) would be reduced from the next payment to $139.00 a fortnight each. They are talking about an increase coming up for the seniors – but how can that help us?

Des and I bought 40 acres of virgin land in 1979 and worked 7 days a week to develop this land from lantana, blady grass, groundsel etc. I am 87 now and still working – but much slower now!!

We developed the Deer Farm registered in 1984 – subdivided the land in 2004 and changed the name to Deer Sanctuary and opened to the public as the demand for breeding stock had slowed down. The land was divided into 5 lots, we had to sell 3 to pay for the road ‘Lyell Court’ to be built to MBRC specifications. Lot 3, now Kupidabin Wilderness, came back on the market – I knew we had to buy this block back again which was still virgin bush. When walking on the land it felt very ‘special’.

With the help of my son who went guarantor for our loan, we bought the land, paid double the price we sold it for 12 months previously. Prices were starting

and humid day, exacerbated by a few brief showers, assisted with the (responsible) sampling of three different brews (1 x lager and 2 x ales) which were enjoyed by all.

Special thanks to Pauline and Carole who provided afternoon snacks to accompany the beers.

The plan is to have these brewers’ meetings every month or so hosted by

to rise in Samford and surrounding areas. The mortgage was $3,000 a month which we paid from our deer leather business until we sold the sanctuary in 2016 and paid the mortgage out.

We began developing Kupidabin Wilderness in 2005 when first nation elder Uncle Tex Chapman blessed the land and said he could see all cultures coming to our land. This land healed me and has healed many other people coming for workshops and retreats etc.

I sent an email to our local MP Peter Dutton explaining our situation. When he arrived back from overseas, he took the time out of his very busy schedule early February to arrange a meeting with me at Kupidabin. He was very impressed with what we had achieved for the community and others who needed help. I was very impressed with his consideration and interest. Peter sent his recommendations to the Minister for Social Services and sent me a copy of her reply to him.

one of the brewers, so everyone gets to showcase their brews, brewing systems and methods.

As John says, “I think the two main benefits of brewing your own beer is firstly, the cost. You can brew top quality beer for a fraction of the cost. Secondly, there’s a sense of achievement when you make something of quality that tastes really good!”

The minister stated she did not have any discretionary rights to change the government regulations and she could not see any reason why I (Mrs Pickstone) could not sell the land and live on a comfortable income.

Des and I have registered a charitable trust with the ACNC to protect the land. The Trust deed states the land is to be kept in perpetuity for charitable purposes and cannot be sold. This is our legacy – a place of peace and harmony we are leaving to the community and those who need to absorb the energy of the land to be healed. We are all volunteers – my advisory committee are all volunteers, we do not derive any income from the property. How many other families have been forced to sell or lease their properties?
