Recognising an exemplary young professional, Samford local Flynn Clark was recently awarded the Young Professional in Logistics Award by leading industry professional network, the International Forwarders & Customs Brokers Association of Australia (IFCBAA).
With a current skills shortage within international trade logistics and supply chain management, the IFCBAA has been eager to highlight the positive impact young people have within the industry.
Flynn said he felt, “very honoured to be recognised by such a large industry organisation.”
“Thanks to Chris Roberts and the team at 3DL Customs & Consulting.”
For the last four years, Flynn has worked at locally based 3DL Customs & Consulting starting as a postgraduate (International Business) intern, before working his way up to the role of Business Manager.
Flynn was nominated by his colleagues for his relentless pursuit of professional outcomes, positive attitude and leadership skills, co-founding the national Young People in Logistics Networking events, client satisfaction and community service.
Flynn also became the Treasurer of the Samford and Districts Chamber of Commerce last year.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity
“I was actually put forward to become Treasurer and thought ‘why not’!”
Chris Roberts, Director of 3D Logistics is very proud of what Flynn has achieved so
this achievement. It goes a very long way to showing what us Samford locals of all ages are capable
of on the national stage when we give it a good go!” ILLAGE

THANK YOU
In April, I heard Sephanie Hinrichs speaking about the charity, Care Kits for Kids. Her story was so heartbreaking of these children in such need of love and support I resolved to help them. Care Kits for Kids provide a backpack with emergency needs: two sets of new clothes, toiletries, school needs, soft toy, age appropriate storybook and a rug for children from birth to 17 years old.
The children have come from Child Services, Police, Domestic Violence shelters. People heard that there would be a box to collect donations at the CWA during a Samford Support Network morning tea recently.
I was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the Samford community. Mercedes from Samford Quilters brought a huge bag of lovely quilts, the Crafting Kindness ladies arrived with two enormous bags, one of soft toys and another with crocheted scarves, beanies and rugs.
The Samford Support Network group came along with nappies, boxes of storybooks, toiletries, school supplies, clothing, dress material and cash donations. I was close to tears at everyone’s kindness, never imagined such a response. My neighbour Clint and I delivered the donations to the Care Kits for Kids base at Camp Hill.
Thank you, thank you so much to everyone for your kindness and generosity to these young people who are doing it so tough, your efforts were truly appreciated.
Warm wishes

TRAGIC WALLABY DEATHS
Sadly, residents along Lochinvar Rd Upper Kedron have experienced more wallaby deaths on this road in recent weeks. This has been an ongoing issue for some time. It is extremely distressing for the baby wallabies who are losing their mothers and for other wallabies who are losing family and mates, as well as for local residents who keep seeing this happen.
The wallabies graze on the grass verge on the side of Lochinvar Rd and are easily spooked by passing cars, suddenly and unexpectedly darting out into the path of an oncoming vehicle, especially at night. They also have a number of particular areas where they cross the road.
These collisions can happen any time of the day, but it is a particular risk in the early morning and late afternoon/evening. These times unfortunately coincide with the busiest times for passing traffic. There are also koalas active in the same area.
We are wanting to alert people who travel along Lochinvar Rd about the wallabies and ask for your assistance in looking out for them. It is such a short distance, about half a kilometre long, and should not greatly inconvenience drivers who show extra vigilance and slow down their speed for a few minutes along this road. Thank you for your love of our beautiful wallabies and koalas.

COMMUNITY PUSH BACK ON AERIAL FIRE ANT BAITING
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program (NFAEP) commenced an aerial baiting program on May 26th, 2024. This method has raised serious environmental concerns in the Samford community.
A 10km wide band of land for hundreds of kilometres around Brisbane is planned to be treated with aerial baiting including areas such as ours with no significant fire ant activity reported. The scale is massive, and a world first. The chemicals used are also not specific to fire ants in any way, and to be effective must also kill native ants and other arthropods. No one knows the implications of this strategy as it’s never been done before.
At a very active Samford community meeting held on Thurs 30th May, NFAEP officials informed the community that no Environmental Impact Study of the effect of the program chemicals on soil, waterways, flora, fauna and humans had been done prior to implementation of the aerial baiting program.
The two chemicals used for the aerial baiting have the following application guidelines. The actual application did not follow these guidelines.
1. Pyriproxyfen - Permit Number PER 87728
• Do not apply directly onto water
• Do not apply within 8m of waterways when using ground based equipment, or within 20m of waterways when applying aerial application.
2. S-methoprene- Permit Number PER 81094
• Do not apply where fire ant populations are not evident or no longer evident.
• Do not contaminate wetlands or watercourses with this product or
used containers. Very toxic to aquatic life.
Filming was done by Samford residents of the aerial baiting being dropped by helicopter into Dawson Creek. The granules, covered in the chemical, also landed in water troughs, house roofs and over the land of Highvale, all areas where no fire ants have been discovered. There are many land owners in Samford Valley who never use any chemicals on their land, grow organic food and drink their tank water.
The eradication program to date has faced much criticism from experts such as Dr Pam Swepson, former Bio Security Department spokesperson, who has told Samford locals that eradication of fire ants simply isn’t possible.
The chemicals used as baits are also not normally used in winter, as the ants go dormant and don’t actively forage, which would mean it’s a total waste of time and money. The baits are also quickly denatured with water, and can wash into waterways, which also renders them a waste of time. So why are we treating now in the cold weather, within hours of predicted rain?
I am a member of the Fire Ant Treatment Alternatives Group - Samford. All local people seeking a more responsible way to work with this fire ant issue can find the group on Facebook by searching: Fire Ant Treatment Alternatives Samford Group. Some positive closing news.
On Saturday 8th June, most likely due to communications from very concerned residents, Mark Furner, Agriculture Minister responsible for the NFAEP Program, stated that the aerial baiting by helicopter had been suspended. He did not indicate if this was permanent or temporary.
Peter Kearney concerned local resident
The following press release was received from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program on 04/06/24.
FIRE ANT TREATMENT IN SAMFORD VALLEY
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is aware of and investigating a claim that product used to treat fire ants may have inadvertently been used in an area of Samford Valley containing water bodies. The product used to eradicate fire ants is an insect growth regulator and contains pyriproxyfen – commonly used to control household and agricultural pests.
The program is working with an independent local company to test and analyse water sample results to determine if there has been any impact on the waterway.
This information and all other required documentation has been provided to the appropriate regulators and the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation for further consideration.
After being alerted to the matter in Samford Valley, the program changed its treatment approach and will now use a product containing S-methoprene for the rest of this season. S-methoprene is permitted for use around waterways and streams and is used extensively in mosquito control programs and other common pest control products. It is also permitted for use on certified organic properties by the Australian Organic Industry Standards and Certification Council.
The program appreciates the community alerting us to this situation and has adjusted internal controls to ensure safe operations of the vital eradication activities can continue this week. Eradicating fire ants requires a whole-of-community approach, and this matter highlights the importance of everyone working together, particularly in areas where eradication activities are being conducted. #Ends

Citizen Science Project
We are now in the fourth year of our TERN citizen science project. Our team leader, Dr Katie Irvine from the University of Adelaide, recently visited Brisbane to attend the launch of QUT SERF’s Engaging Science Trail at the Camp Mountain property. The next morning Katie was able to join some of the EcoCorridor birders for the quarterly bird surveys of the 2-hectare woodland plots at SERF. Katie acted as timekeeper and plot navigator for the two 20-minute surveys. She witnessed first-hand how traffic and aircraft noise make it difficult to hear some birds, particularly at the Camp Mountain Road side of our two plots.
Nevertheless, the team recorded 21 species in the first plot and 23 species in the second plot, although a couple of species were judged to be outside the plot boundaries. The summer migrant species had long departed to be replaced by winter migrants, such as the Rose Robin and Spotted Pardalote. Some of these birds move northwards from southern states in the cooler months and others come down from the mountains.
The number of Grey Fantails also increases significantly at this time. Besides these seasonal changes, it is still too early to determine any long-term trends in bird abundance in our two plots (we have completed 14 surveys in each).
On the way back to the SERF barracks for a sumptuous morning tea kindly provided by TERN, our birders noticed a Spotted Pardalote leave a tree hollow then gather nesting material, but didn’t see it return to the hollow (this species normally nests in holes in banks).
Later, on a casual walk around the property, they saw a female and immature male Regent Bowerbird in the denser vegetation bordering Samford Creek. This is another winter visitor from Mts Nebo and Glorious to the valley below.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB Celebration of Survival
We are working towards having a Celebration of Survival on Friday 9 August: a day when we recognise that despite life’s many and varied challenges, we are still here, not beaten, living to appreciate another day.
It will be Open House in the Hall of the SCHUB from noon till 5pm, for anyone - or friends of anyone - who has got through any blip that may have changed the way they approach life. It might be cancer, abuse,
migration, divorce, the passing of a loved one, the failure of a business, disability, aging, getting through parenthood or bringing up Mum and Dad - the list goes on. The idea is to promote the positives. I haven’t found anybody who celebrates getting through life’s trials, so this may be a Samford first.
There will be music, singing (Jenni Guse and Ray Adams are the magic for this), and maybe some dancing. If everybody brings a plate, we’ll share a feast. Tea and coffee will be provided. Kim Garthwaite will give a little talk on survival. Ruth Campbell will run a session of Therapeutic Chair Yoga mid-afternoon. Hopefully we can dig up some simple games (suggestions please). $2 from each person to cover hall hire. An ‘official’ invitation will be published later here and on Facebook. Watch out for it.
Upcoming Friday afternoon program:
14 June: Cuppa and Chat at 2pm followed by Therapeutic Chair Yoga with Ruth at 3pm.
21 June: Crafting Kindness with the usual Cuppa and Chat at 2.
28 June: Cuppa and Chat at 2, followed by Good Stuff Ideas Forum talking about Survival.
5 July: Samford Scribblers at noon followed by Cuppa and Chat at 2.
12 July: Cuppa and a Chat followed by Therapeutic Chair Yoga with Ruth.
9 August: Celebration Of Survival EVERYONE IS WELCOME. $2 covers costs.

SDPPA SUPPORTED EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
Another busy month on the Aircraft front fighting for worlds best practice for Brisbane and the greater Samford Area Community.
Airservices May to July Engagement includes the following:
• Standard Instrument Departures for Archerfield Airport. Once aircraft depart Archerfield, they will radar vector to their destinations which will include overflight of the Samford Area. As to what plus or minus heights and impact that will have on our area is yet to be seen.
• Alternative over-water departures progressed from Phase One. This option includes night time departures over water for our communities as aircraft travel over Cashmere, Dayboro and Lacey’s Creek towards Waypoint WACKO. Over flight at Waypoint WACKO is projected to be higher at 17,000 feet.
• Additional Segregated Operating Modes progressed from Phase Two. This option will automatically progress to design stage and even up the Segregated Runway Mode Operations between the NPR and Legacy Runways.
• Simultaneous Opposite Direction Parallel Runway Operations (SODPROPS) Plan. (Aircraft arriving on one runway over water and departing on the other runway over water). Airservices have been under pressure to deliver SODPROPS as the primary mode of runway operations 24/7. This mode gives Brisbane the best opportunity for peace and quiet, but is heavily constrained by weather conditions,
air traffic from other airports over Moreton Bay and capacity numbers. Any increased use of SODPROPS will be welcomed, but SODPROPS will cease in (approx) 2035 when it is outstripped by capacity.
For more information https://engage. airservicesaustralia.com/nap4b/news_feed/ design-options-june-2024.
Feedback closes 16th July.
What happened to Noise Sharing?
Airservices Noise Sharing Options which came out to our community in Phase Two nearly a year ago are not lost and forgotten. Airservices have handballed this responsibility for design to TRAX International. It has become apparent that Airservices do not have the resources to look at the Brisbane Aviation Bowl in a holistic view. Hopefully this will mean the predicament of the narrow and converged flight paths over us will be addressed professionally now. Unfortunately, this will take many months to come to fruition.
Legacy Runway Closure for Maintenance
On 24th June the original Legacy Runway at Brisbane Airport will close to heavy widebodied jets for approximately three months. The Runway is expected to be shortened in order to lay new landing pavement at each end of the runway. This means heavy widebodied jets will be using the New Parallel Runway 24 hours per day, seven days per week during this period. We may see more heavy jets than usual over the Samford Area.
Senate Inquiry Submissions
Thankyou everyone for your submission to the Senate Inquiry. The Senate Committee was inundated with submissions. The Inquiry Secretariat had elected not to publish those using BFPCA Campaign Template Submissions. After our advocacy, this decision has now been overturned by the Inquiry Committee as the campaign submissions included a substantial amount
of unique information. Therefore, any public submissions of 200 words or more will be published and those submissions less than 200 words will have their names published only.
Silent Killer: New Research Reveals Hidden Health Risks of LowFrequency Aircraft Noise
We already know Aircraft Noise is annoying, has an impact on children’s learning ability and comes with certain health risks like cardiovascular disease. But emerging science from the United States, Europe and now the BFPCA’s own Committee Member, Dr Sean Foley, is warning us of the hidden health dangers of Low Frequency Noise emitted by aircraft. The BFPCA is advocating for new Noise Maps and Health Impact Studies to bring not only Brisbane, but the rest of Australia into the 21st Century.
Media Release 5 June 2024 https://bfpca. org.au/dbh/
If you or anyone you know is impacted by Aircraft overflight. Please email SAAAG at contactSAAAG@gmail.com and we can direct you to your local advocacy group. Thank you to Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association and The Village Pump for their continued support!

NEXT SDPPA MEETING
Wednesday 19th
Samford Community Hub (SCHUB). 7pm start. Come along and hear about what’s going on in your community. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au.
The sodden ground didn’t dampen spirits at Samford State Schools’s recent Autumn Carnival, drawing crowds from all corners of the local community.
The school’s positivity was reflected in the afternoon’s weather, as homemade baked goods sold in droves and rides spun kids around at full velocity with the sun shining upon festivities.
“A massive shout out to the team of very dedicated parents and staff who forged on, through the morning’s pouring rain, continuing to set up with fingers crossed,” Acting Principal John Mauch said.
“With 10 minutes before start time, the rain stopped, the clouds parted, and the sun came out. We were underway and what a carnival with a big turnout, and lots of smiles, fun and excitement.”
Year levels and local dance groups commanded the stage area, with a range of performances that drew audiences in. A wide range of food was on offer from various food trucks as well as the traditional BBQ sizzling away in the heart of the school oval.
Side show alley proved to be a direct hit, as kids tested their ball-throwing, duckcatching and quoits-tossing skills for their chance to win a prize.
Sustainability was also kept in mind with a second-hand toy sale breathing new life into old wares. An outstanding 160 bags of second-hand goods were sold at the carnival.
“A big thank you to all the families that supported the day. We, as a school, are always grateful to have such positive connections with our parent community. Thank you to our amazing P&C including P&C President Ailsa McAuley and her team of hard-working parents,” John said.
COMMUNITY CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS
“To the school staff, thank you for your support in the lead up to the Carnival and on the day. To our sponsors, your generosity to support us financially is always very much appreciated.”
The night ended with a bang as a flare of fireworks lit up Samford Valley as well as the faces of wide-eyed kids and grownups alike.

Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing
What a busy month May has been. Instructor Jacqueline Dalmau is a certified Mat and Reformer instructor under Merrithew Training out of Canada. She has just returned from overseas attending courses to complete her Repertoire of
Pilates Equipment Exercises - 3 weeks of nonstop learning.
Now we will need to help her clock up many hours of teaching, observation and self-practise of these new modalities of instructing on equipment, before she is ready to take her exam. Jac, as we call her, is a delight in our studio and we have missed her fun filled classes.
In Jac’s absence, I was fortunate to have Charlie Barksdale step in to instruct some of Jac’s classes. Charlie is making up her teaching and observation hours under the Pilates Training from Body Organics here in Brisbane. All this whilst also studying Law, so Charlie comes in to instruct when she can between assignments and exams, adding another wonderful element of enjoyment to the classes she delivers.
I introduced the “Reformation Class for Men”, with a maximum of four clients. All the spaces have been filled and progression is being made. Slowly working back to balanced postures and pain free bodies.
If there are any ladies out there also needing a Reformation type class, I will be happy to entertain a “Reformation Class for ladies only.” We are looking forward to the month of June and all we can achieve within it. If you are interested contact me on www. pilateslifestyle.com.au or on 0432 269 472. Dorothy

How rights are we?
We all know that Universal Human Rights apply to everyone on the planet and every organisation on the planet. We expect that every human being has the right to live with freedom, dignity, safety, equality and respect - according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948. This landmark document laid out fundamental human rights to be protected worldwide. So, in our first world community, what does this mean for businesses and community run enterprises?
We probably think we have a pretty good understanding of what human rights implications we have for businesses. And by and large most businesses probably meet the aspirations of human rights. But sometimes human rights may not be observed by others in our supply chain. How do we know if they do, or not?
In 2011, the United Nations published the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. These principles provide human rights standards for businesses.
A number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relate to human rights. And we can contribute to achieving these and other goals by identifying our business impacts and adjusting policies or practices. These may relate to areas such as recruitment, workplace safety, marketing, purchasing, and how to use and share resources fairly, to ensure fairness in
meeting human needs.
Probably the hardest thing to monitor is our supply chain, which has an impact on human rights up and down the line. To be doing the ‘rights thing’ we need to find out about the working conditions of people employed by our suppliers, and of their suppliers. For more info on risks and what to look out for, see the posts on www. greenstreet.net.au about both Human Rights and Modern Slavery.
We can also look at the positive impacts we can have on human rights.
If you have thoughts on this topic, please write an article for the Village Pump or contact Green Street on 0407 190 162 or info@greenstreet.net.au

Every purchase you make at the Farm Gate helps The Mini Farm Project achieve its mission to “Build Farms to Feed Aussies in Need.” With two operating farms already providing free produce to charity partners for meals and hampers, your support is crucial as financial pressures tighten.
By buying our fresh produce, you’re not only nourishing your family with healthy, spray-free food, but also making a positive impact on the community. Bring your shopping bag, fill it with nature’s fresh
bounty, and know that you’re helping to feed those in need. From potatoes and carrots to broccoli and fennel, they have all your in-season farm favourites covered.
Join us every Saturday to make a difference. Your support is vital, and together, we can tackle food insecurity one fresh vegetable at a time. See you at the Samford Farm Gate! Real food at real prices with a purpose.

KIDS GROWING FOODLOVE IT!
We just finished our first term of Little Green Thumbs - a play based program connecting children with growing food and composting. Can you believe we had 94 families enrolled in our free program over 8 weeks!
We welcomed Mums and Bubs with their little babes in arms, to children up to 5 years of age - and we loved seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they played in the dirt - starting a worm farm - planted their
garden - and watered it each week.
Thank you to our volunteers who made it all happen! Behind the scenes we have had a small team of people working away each week on jobs. Thank you to Mary, Ian, Rick, Lyn, Michael, Deb, Susanne and the homeschooling crew, and Reclink volunteers. A special thank you to Costa Georgiadis, host of Gardening Australia who dropped in to offer his support for Green Thumb Farm.
We are taking a few weeks break, not to rest but because we want to expand our Little Green Thumb program for next term! We are raising money to buy native bee hives, and to make a community compost area and we would love any support, small or large! Your contribution will make a real difference. You can visit our website to find out more about our programs and to donate toward our Little Green Thumbs Program.
Thank you to the support of the City of Moreton Bay Healthy and Active Program for supporting our Little Green Thumbs Program.
See you at Green Thumb Farm this Saturday from 9am - 11am when you can enjoy a wander, grab a coffee and buy some of our organic produce. All proceeds go back to supporting our educational community farm.

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Beven!
If you thought Beven – whose traceable ancestor is William the Conqueror from 18 generations ago – spent 1½ decades in the Army to prove himself worthy, then you’re right. And as he was born a Kiwi, he chose the NZ Army Royal Engineers to reap the benefit of his expertise as a hands-on sparky. His family heritage stems from Surrey, UK, and has its own unique Coat of Arms. No doubt they mix with the gentry, but listening to the antics of his new life in the Samford area, you’d be forgiven for thinking maybe he was adopted.
In early retirement he was so bored that he bought and operated a marine tourism business (as you do), which quickly grew into two marine tourism businesses (as you shouldn’t). Having sold those, and finding real retirement, he works harder than ever, especially since joining SAMS. Being our resident electrical guy, he volunteered to upgrade the PA system from its town crier’s bell and rolled-up newspaper, to
an 8-speaker quadraphonic work of art. Rumour has it, Taylor Swift’s roadies are in negotiations to hire it ahead of her next tour downunder.
As a self-taught goat breeder in Dayboro these days, his achievements include collecting eggs (no mention of chooks, which is worrying), slashing the paddocks down to cane toad height, avoiding electrical shocks and evading speed cameras.
One exciting episode occurred recently when battling the backyard jungle on his quad bike, the one with the mower attached to the back. He somehow managed to speed-wrap himself around a perfectly visible tree, with everything ending up at 90 degrees to everything else and going nowhere. It took a winch, a car jack, not enough rope, too many colourful words, and three hours, before he was forced to deploy heavy artillery in the shape of a reluctant chain saw.
He’s been a Justice of the Peace, has a USA Green Card and a collection of military medals for service in Vietnam, Singapore, Fiji & India, yet his proudest certificate is the one proclaiming his marriage, 55 years ago. Onya Beven, but none of those heroics will fix the fluoro above the Shed’s lectern, will they.

LET’S GO BACK IN TIME TO SAMFORD 1924
Saturday 29th June
1pm - 5pm
Wow! This is turning out to be bigger than Ben Hur. A day hardly goes past without another of our fabulous community groups signing up to be a part of this Centenary Celebration of St Paul’s Anglican Church. It’s a great way to meet the local community groups who are the heart, soul and social glue of the Samford Valley.
This is just some, but by no means all, of what’s happening:
• Horse-shoe hurling (such fun – and yes, the SDPPA are taking great care!).
• Gypsy fortune-telling by Madame Elaine with cosmic support from Ronnie and Valda.
• Face painting with Naomi and SPYwerx Theatre.
• Cos-play photo-booth with props –courtesy of Rotary Club of Samford.
• Relaxing in the “Flappers’ wine den” (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks).
• Sack-racing with the “Samford Urchins”.
• Try milking Buttercup the Pantomime Cow, stabled at the Samford Lions’ tent.
• Browse the Book Wagon while sipping your hot chocolate, chai or coffee and nibbling on home-made
treats from QCWA and others.
• Bowl like a pro on the Samford Bowls Club’s specially prepared grass pitch.
• Lots to look at with Samford Museum’s display, The Men’s Shed activities, and the Crafters from the Slab Hut.
• Look around Werner Kroll’s amazing Dakota AirBus – the roadworthy vehicle he made out of aeroplane fuselage. Have you seen it around Samford?
• Meet with Samford Firies and check out their amazing new tech capability.
• Add music (Bruce Colledge, Feed Lucy, Samford Singers), mulled wine, pumpkin soup, syllabubs and sumptuous BBQ snacks and you have the perfect Samford Winter afternoon.
Feel free to costume up for the 1924 look – but stay warm too! It’s at St Paul’s Church in Samford, Cnr Serendipity & Mt Samson Road – where the monthly markets are held. Jo Roberts

PINE RIVERS UPDATE
Energy Rebate:
We have passed the legislation to make sure that all household power bills will receive $1000 off from July 1. For seniors, concession card holders and pensioners this is $1372. The Federal Government has just announced $300 off in their budget which takes the general household relief to $1300 off and vulnerable Queenslanders $1672 off their power bill.
The credit will continue to roll over on the bill and will mean households won’t pay an electricity bill until well into 2025. We can do this because we are making big multinational mining companies pay their fair share. Driving down bills is important to Queenslanders, and it’s important to me.
The rebate will be automatically applied from July 1.
50c Public Transport Fares
In a measure to cut the cost of living, get more commuters on our network, and bust congestion, from 5 August Translink public transport services will be slashed to 50 cents, no matter where you live or how far you travel.
Existing commuters stand to save thousands of dollars. If Queenslanders
switch from driving the savings could be enormous.
Significantly reducing the cost barrier to public transport will encourage more people to leave the car at home, leading to a reduction in road congestion. A single bus takes 50 cars off the road and a train takes 600 cars off the road. The initiative will be in place for six months. Customers will still need to ‘tap on’ and ‘tap off’ for their journey using Smart Ticketing, a go card, or by purchasing a paper ticket, in order to access the reduced fare.
Small Business Awards

ABOUT
OUT &
A MORNING AT THE SAMFORD MUSEUM
A group of residents from Samford Grove Retirement Village recently visited the museum. After welcoming our visitors, cuppas were served by our volunteers, alongside a Devonshire morning tea, homemade scones, strawberry jam, and a large dollop of fresh whipped cream. While enjoying the food and chatting, our resident swaggie, Ray, arrived, all dressed up for the part. With a tale or six, he entertained them all with a repertoire of his well-versed poems. His presence was very much appreciated, and laughter could be heard from the audience. The groups were divided into two and the tour began as we showcased the museum.
The visitors were amazed at the size of our establishment. They were even more awestruck at the size and number of displays and buildings. Memories flooded back for so many of the people no matter where they looked. One man made the comment that his wife did not like museums, but this is the
exception. With each exhibit, I could hear her say, “This place is amazing - so amazing. Most museums are boring, but not this one.”
I explained that the volume of displays at the Samford Museum is more relevant to the area of the Samford Valley. In its heyday, there were a variety of different sustainable services such as timber, gold, cattle, dairying, pineapples, bananas, fruits, etc. and therefore all of the above information plus photos, written words and memories were collated.
A large amount of valuable paraphernalia was in good condition. More of the salvaged and retrieved items required restoration which was carried out by our valued volunteers. A majority of the items and goods were bequeathed by locals or their families. All are entrusted to our care and are much appreciated, valued and well looked after. Each piece has its own story to tell, no matter how small or large. Personally, I would love a dollar every time visitors say to us all, “And to think
of what I threw away.” Positive comments, both written and spoken, congratulated all the volunteers for their dedicated work in displaying fabulous times gone by, and the cleanliness of the entire area.
When visiting such places, reminiscing and stepping back in time is always good for the soul. I hope our visitors had a pleasant and memorable time at the Samford Museum. Thanks must also go to the helpers on the day.
Opening times: Wednesday and Sunday - 10am to 4pm. Adults $5, children $1. Perhaps your group would like to visit the museum? 21 Station Street, Samford Village. Ph: 3289 2743. Bev Campbell

Ladies Presidents Day is always a special day at the club. Over the previous twelve months, ladies representatives from our club have attended many such days at other clubs in the greater Brisbane area. Our ladies President, Lesley Maher is held in high regard with everyone that has the pleasure of meeting her and she has no problem in attracting many other clubs to help celebrate this day with her and the other Samford members.
Held on Monday 27th May, there were teams from Northern Suburbs, Aspley, Red Hill/West Toowong mix, St Lucia, Toombul, Pine Rivers, Chermside, Windsor plus our own Samford players. We were grateful for a fine day so everyone could enjoy our beautiful valley with plenty of raffle prizes, a very tasty lunch, and 15 lucky prize draws sponsored by Belle Property. Plus, we had a game of bowls to top off a great day.
Another day on our bowls calendar that is always celebrated is the annual Patron and Club Representative’s Day. This year it was held on Saturday 1st June. Our Patron, Mac Patterson attended along with the sectional representatives, Lesley Maher and Rod Palmer. The rain threatened but held off long enough for the day’s activities to be completed. Lunch was prepared by our ladies. We are grateful to Denture Square who were our sponsor of this day.
It is hard to believe we are half way through 2024. We are busy playing club competitions, choosing teams to represent us in the pennant season and district competition. Some of our members are just
content to come along and play social bowls with no pressure. Win or lose they enjoy their time on the green, having a cuppa or a beer but most of all socialising, which we are told is a must for our health. If you are interested in giving bowls a go, we will be having a ‘Come and Try ‘morning in July. More info in the next edition or contact Janice 0487 875 596.
Mah-jong is played at our club every Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 1pm. Contact Jan 0402 623 794 for more information.
Our Tuesday morning social bowls, which is a combined U3A and club members
group, recently went on one of their bus trips. This time they met very early and headed off to North Stradbroke Island for a day of sightseeing. These days are all about enjoyment. No bowls. Morning tea was at Blue Lake then a walk along the boardwalk at Point Lookout followed by lunch at the restaurant at Amity Point. Following a tour of the museum it was back on the ferry and home to Samford by 6pm. A great day was had by all.

The SGVPC has been blessed by community support in the last month and members are fortunate and appreciative of being on the receiving end of this assistance for the club.
Firstly, support from members and family saw the Dressage and Combined Training Day successfully run without a hitch and secondly, the financial support to run this event from community businesses including: Samford Valley veterinary Hospital, Samford Garage, Lockyer Hay and Chaff.
We also thank the following local businesses for their generous raffle donations: Dominos, Brumbys, Flight Centre, Ken Green Equine, AZA Equestrian, Inline Equine, Terry White Chemist and Belle Property. The money raised will help to fund up and coming projects the club wishes to complete, making it a better space to be enjoyed by all.
The club is overjoyed at the recent assistance from the Samford Area Men’s Shed, who collaborated with our President Rhys to design and build a fabulous frame for our trailer. This now fits the show jump
set in a small standard box trailer.
The hours spent by the Men’s Shed to make this trailer were truly appreciated and very much needed to store and move these jumps around the club. Thank you to our fabulous Samford community.

CENTRE IMPROVEMENT
A double carport to accommodate a horse float and a large vehicle is the latest improvement to the Samford RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds.
The newly completed structure was built as part of a $96,000 grant provided through the State Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The funding was also used to purchase an angle-load float and a 4x4 utility, which has relieved pressure on volunteers to use their own vehicles for RDA purposes.
Samford RDA thanks State Member, Nikki Boyd, for supporting their successful application for the funding; and Craig Hoolihan of Titan Garages and Sheds, Morayfield who discounted the cost of construction and provided free certification and a workbench. Underground services were scanned at no cost by Samford local Kevin from K&S Scanning.
Samford RDA is officially recognised as a Centre of Excellence by Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia (RDAA). The carport complements a range of modern facilities such as a covered arena with adjoining saddling area, an office and dedicated tack shed.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATION FOR SAMFORD GROVE
A line-up of special guests joined residents of Reside Communities’ Samford Grove village recently to celebrate the official completion of an $80 million expansion of the popular community. Local Federal Member for Dickson and Liberal Party Leader Peter Dutton was on hand to cut the ribbon on the project that has delivered more than 100 much-needed new homes for local retirees and a brand-new luxury clubhouse.
Mr Dutton was joined by Bruce and Denise Morcombe of Reside’s charity partner, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, as well as Reside Ambassador and leading journalist Kay McGrath. Samford Grove is the only retirement community in the picturesque Samford Village and is now home to more than 160 residents after the extensive 3-year redevelopment.
Reside Communities CEO and Co-Founder Glen Brown said he was delighted to have Mr Dutton along to Samford Grove to meet with residents, take a tour of the village and cut the ribbon to officially mark the project’s completion.
“Until now, the Samford Valley region has been very limited in terms of new housing options designed specifically for seniors, so the completion of our Samford Grove expansion is a great outcome for thelocal community,” Mr Brown said.
“The overwhelmingly positive feedback we continue to receive from our residents
is a testament to what Reside has delivered here and we are extremely proud of the new Samford Grove.”
Mr Dutton said communities such as Samford Grove allowed more people to live their best lives in retirement while enjoying the great lifestyle on offer in the Samford Valley.
“Call me biased, but there’s nowhere in Australia better to live than my electorate of Dickson and Samford has always been one of the most attractive locations within this great region,” he said.
Acquired by Reside Communities in 2018, the expansion included the addition of more than 100 new villas and townhomes, 12 apartments and The Homestead – a deluxe community centre with café, lounge, bar, cinema, indoor pool, gym, beauty salon, consultation room for visiting practitioners and alfresco barbecue areas and gardens.

City of Moreton Bay is calling on cat and dog owners to update their pet information before animal registration renewal notices are issued in late August. Mayor Peter Flannery highlighted the importance of keeping pet details current.
“Moreton Bay residents love their pets, with over 84,000 cats and dogs registered in our city,” he said. “Taking a few minutes to update your pet’s details ensures you will receive the correct registration renewal notice and helps keep your animal safe.”
Registration discounts apply for desexed animals and concessions are available for eligible pet owners, such as pensioners. Residents can also opt to receive their animal renewal notice by email, ensuring they never miss important information.
Please inform Council if:
• you have changed address or contact details;
• your pet has passed away or been rehomed;
• your pet has been desexed (a reduced fee may apply);
• you are now eligible for a pensioner discount; or
• you would like to receive registration renewal notices by email.
To update your pet’s registration details, visit Council’s website or call 3205 0555.

Brendale Evening VIEW Club
Enlightened about Cyber Scams
The Brendale Evening VIEW Club May dinner meeting was fascinated by guest speaker Police Officer Jose Sarmiento, who held our attention as he outlined the many cyber scams to be aware of. Home and mobile phone scans, email scams and even personally to your door were discussed, making us very aware of the seriousness of this subject. After the presentation, members kept Policer Officer Jose very busy with questions throughout the dinner.
Our evening club supports eight children through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program. Students from Primary to Secondary levels have the opportunity
and confidence to move forward with the support we can provide. This happens through our annual fundraising activities including our monthly dinner meetings, where it’s great to have updates on our student’s progress
In addition to our fundraising, members come together every year and donate blankets, pillows and other personal items to the Women’s Refuge. This is a very vital and worthy cause as the Refuge has a great need to make sure women are made welcome, safe and comfortable.
Upcoming events:
18 June dinner meeting: guest speaker will be Spencer Howson from ABC radio 1993-2020, including 15 years as host of the top-rating ABC Brisbane Breakfast show.
6th July: Brendale Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. Come along and support us.
If you are unable to make the dinner meeting, what about joining us for a ‘Coffee and Chat’ on the first Saturday of the month, 10am. At White’s Coffee Co. in the Bracken Ridge Tavern.
Our dinner meetings are held at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start on the third Tuesday of the month at Aspley Hornets Football Club, Carseldine. Bookings required by contacting our President Shayne on 0409 991 428.

Arana VIEW Club
May was a very busy month for Arana VIEW Club, with our very successful Zone Conference. In June we had a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings and coming up in August there is the Bake & Grow.
Our members can look forward to outings to Aspley 10 Pin Bowling, Mt Coo-tha Botanical Gardens Guided Tour and lunch at Portabella Restaurant in Albany Creek.
Our July guest speaker will be Leanne Clark from SafeMate who will tell us all about personal QR codes for medical emergencies.
As you know, VIEW is the largest sponsor of The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, a vital initiative that provides students with financial and personal support. In the current economic climate, this assistance is crucial so young people get the best start in life.
The club welcomes women of all backgrounds and ages to join our meetings, held on the first Wednesday of each month at Arana Leagues Club, Keperra. We start at 10.30am for 11.00am, offering a delightful two course lunch, tea and coffee for $35.00. To learn more or confirm your attendance, contact Carol at 3355 5349 by noon the Thursday before the meeting. We look forward to welcoming you. Trish
