MATILDA WALTZES TO PREMIERSHIP

Samford Rangers Women FQPL3 team, captained by former Matilda Pam Bignold (nee Grant), completed a rare double this year. In only his first year with Rangers, Head Coach Fiore Bartilomo assembled a team with a balance of experience and youth, including several players who have come through the junior ranks at Samford such as Club Captain Ella Bennett. This great group of players not only won the FQPL3 Premiership, losing only one game all season, but were also crowned Champions after a nail-biting victory against close rivals Springfield FC in the Grand Final.

Consequently, the team has been promoted to FQPL2 for next season, which is the 4th highest level of football in

Australia and has been awarded Football Queensland’s Metro Community Team of the Year. Captain Pam Bignold and star striker Emma Woods have both been nominated for FQPL3 Metro Women Player of the Year, and Emma has won the Golden Boot award thanks to her haul of 39 goals! Fiore has also earned a nomination for Coach of the Year. Amazing achievements and massive congratulations to all involved!

Our club’s commitment to female football is an important pillar in our strategy for success and growth and there are now welldefined pathways into advanced football available to our younger female players at Rangers. We have an established girl’s and women’s program and are excited to

announce that Pam will be overseeing the girl’s program in 2024. As well as playing with the Matilda’s, Pam has played and coached at Brisbane Roar and coached the Matilda’s U17 team. She is a talented and passionate footballer and coach, and a great mentor and role model for all our female players. Rangers is planning to enter teams into the advanced ‘Girls Academy’ competition in coming seasons, as well as continuing to offer community football for all ages and abilities.

COME AND TRY On 1st and 2nd November, Rangers is hosting ‘Come and Try’ days for girls aged 11-17 years and all levels of experience at our home ground, Samford Parklands.

Girls aged 11-13 years are invited along from 5pm, and 14-17 years from 6.15pm.

We would love to see all the local young, aspiring Matilda’s come down and have a friendly kick in a safe and welcoming environment, meet our coaches and players and hear about opportunities to play football at Samford Rangers in 2024.

LOCAL NEWS ONE GIANT LEAP FROM SAMFORD Exploring the final frontier is no mean feat, but local stargazer Holly Stovold launched herself into the unknown, taking part in a Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Centre in Alabama. The program is based on NASA astronaut training, building teamwork and leadership skills.

Apart from learning about the far depths of the universe, the Samford State School student also found some likeminded friends along her journey.

“Overall it was one of the greatest weeks of my life and I made a lot of friends along the way. My instructors, Sadie and Connor were really nice and spent each day with us. They took us around the grounds, going on rides, talking to us about the history of space, giving us challenges to do around the museums, and always stopping for snacks,” Holly said.

Refreshments were well warranted for the astronomical amount of endeavours participants engaged in.

“Our group, Capricorn, did activities and challenges each day. A couple of my favourites were the rocket launch where we made mini rockets powered with gunpowder, and then launched them later that day,” Holly said.

“I also loved the MAT (Multi Axis Trainer).

I got spun around in every direction you could imagine. It was three minutes long, but it felt like three seconds.”

Holly’s camp highlight was taking part in a simulation of the Orion Mission. Orion is NASA’s spacecraft designed to send astronauts farther into space than ever

before. A capsule returns the astronauts to Earth at speeds over 32,000 km/h making for a bumpy landing.

“Everyone got different roles. As the Commander, I was in a simulation capsule for lift-off. The people at Mission Control were going way too fast, and after 20 fun (and stressful) minutes, we landed, where we got out of the capsule and walked to the space station. I did a chemical experiment and gave the results to Mission Control. I definitely came away wanting to be an astronaut!” Holly said.

Working as a team, participants confronted mission scenarios that required them to engage in problem solving and critical thinking. By adapting NASA’s astronaut program, the camp provides astronauts-inwaiting real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

After her interstellar experience, Holly would recommend this camp to others with a similar cosmic interest.

“Not only does it change the way people think about space, but it also teaches us the importance of space exploration,” she said.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Centre offers space, aviation and robotics camps to kids from the age of 9, adults, families and educators.

LOCAL NEWS Samford’s Past Preserved for the Future The Samford Museum showcases the phenomenal change Samford and surrounds has undergone throughout the years, with the museum itself evolving greatly with Geoff Harris at the helm. After 11 years as President, Geoff has stepped down, but not without overseeing the continued growth and development of a Samford icon.

“Many people will remember the museum for our big days where we filled John Scott Park with car clubs and the steam roller going up and down Station Street,” Geoff said.

During this time, the museum began attracting schools who were keen to bring history and the pioneering lifestyle to life for their students.

“We now get schools from all over Brisbane, many coming year after year.

From July 1st last year until July this year we had over 2,000 pupils visit for the day.

We have even had former pupils who have become teachers bring their classes back to experience what they did,” Geoff said.

“Sometimes we get pupils come back another day bringing their entire family

because they had such a great time.”

The Samford Museum is staffed entirely by volunteers, and Geoff has made some likeminded and lifelong friends as part of the time he generously gave to preserving the area’s history for future generations.

“The museum is always a works in progress, and I have been privileged to work with a great team also to meet some incredible, and incredibly generous people,” he said.

for President after the previous incumbent held the role for 14 years. He worked with Stan Chambers who was elected as Vice President when Geoff stepped up to his new role. Stan was the Museum’s Providore at the time of the last Annual General Meeting when they both stood down.

“We wish the new President and Vice President every success and yes Stan and I will still be there helping,” Geoff said.

“Thank you one and all for making the museum what it is today from a bit of bare parkland.”

STEINER’S ODYSSEY In the closing week of Term 3, the Samford Valley Steiner School (SVSS) community witnessed an unforgettable odyssey. Enthusiastic audience members embarked on a whimsical voyage through the school grounds over four nights, guided by the creative brilliance of the High School students and the community in a production aptly titled “The Odyssey”.

At SVSS, Year 12 students undertake Senior Research Projects (SRPs) alongside their electives, allowing them to explore a topic of personal interest. Mehdi Shajirati, a Year 12 student with a passion for acting and directing, came up with the idea for the play “The Odyssey” during the planning of his SRP. Inspired by Homer’s epic poem of the same name, which was deeply studied in Year 5 at SVSS, Mehdi saw an opportunity to fuse his artistic passion

with the captivating narrative of Odysseus’ journey home.

Collaborating with Nicole Ostini, High School Speech and Drama teacher, the duo transformed Mehdi’s vision into an extraordinary nighttime, outdoor walking production that guided the audience through fifteen captivating scenes set within the school’s premises. This enchanting four-night production took place during the week-long “The Odyssey Spring Festival,” which also featured a range of activities for the High School students such as workshops, keynote presentations, discussion sessions, the Spring Festival Markets, and the entire school Spring Festival. It was an undeniable success.

The entire High School cohort contributed to various aspects of the production, including grant applications, puppet and prop creation, costume design, choreography, composition, abseiling, acting and musical performance. The play also featured collaborations with alumni, community member, and groups like The Nighting Guys and the community choir.

The enchanting score for the play was composed by Dale Jones and Thor Morrison, a Year 12 student, while giant puppets came to life under the artistic guidance of teacher Vanessa Chadwick and Helen Stephens from the Dead Puppet Society, along with the Year 10 cohort.

What began as a simple idea blossomed into a breath-taking once-in-a-lifetime performance that left the community in awe. Featuring 10-foot-tall sea monster puppets, a water-spraying Poseidon, fiery sequences, captivating fight choreography, ethereal lighting, and intricate costumes, “The Odyssey” was an indescribable event that left spectators spellbound—a true testament to the creativity, determination and energy of all involved.

LOCAL NEWS LOCALS RACE TO SUCCESS The Queensland Historic Road Racing Championships were held recently at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick. Two local motorcycle enthusiasts, David Reed and Brian Wood, had great success on the track, taking out third and second place respectively in their chosen races.

Historic motorcycle racing aims to preserve the heritage of the sport, by enabling older motorcycles to be viewed and enjoyed in a competitive racing environment. The competition is divided into motorcycle age brackets or ‘period’ categories for both

solo machines and sidecars. For these championships, the youngest period age limit was 1999 and the oldest period was for machines manufactured before 1919.

David successfully raced his 1978 Yamaha RD400 two stroke motorcycle into third place and Brian’s second place came, racing his 1999 Yamaha R6 four stroke motorcycle.

Brian also runs the TeamBWR racing team, helping young riders complete in the current Australian Superbike Championship.

The Annual General Meeting of the Samford Show Society will be held on Wednesday 8 November at 7pm in the Committee rooms at the Showground.

The Show Society’s constitution imposes term limits on the four executive positions - President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer - in order to encourage new blood and new ideas and these positions are up for election. There are eight other Director positions to be filled on the 12-person committee.

Current President Terry Hogan said that the Show Society has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with record attendances and a healthy bank balance to protect the Society from the vagaries of the weather and other unforeseen events.

“It costs a motza to mount the Show before we even open the gate. We have had to cancel two of the past four Shows because of weather and Covid, but this just made the 2023 Show more popular than ever. It is firmly established as a major event in the valley calendar, and it has strong support from the whole community.

Planning for 2024 started the morning after the 2023 Show.”

The Show Society acts as Trustee for the beautiful Samford Showgrounds in Highvale. While the Show itself only takes up two days of the year, maintaining and developing the site to meet ever increasing demands for a wide variety of other uses throughout the year (such as music festivals, antique markets etc) is a labour of love for the committee.

“We’re really keen to welcome new members of all ages and talents,” said Terry, “and particularly people with marketing, sponsorship, website management and related skills. We’re a pretty laid-back bunch and always on the lookout for new ideas. We have a strong core of committed members and like all voluntary organisations, we need to keep attracting new faces to ensure we stay on top of our game.”

LOCAL NEWS ‘34 YEARS AND ONE METRE FROM WHERE I STARTED’ Brisbane’s ever-evolving hospitality landscape has witnessed its fair share of changes over the years, and one individual who has weathered these transformations is Samford local, Andrew Baturo. Andrew’s journey began in 1989 as the youngestever Duty Manager at Friday’s, setting the stage for a remarkable career in Australia’s hospitality sector. From Brisbane to Sydney, the 2000 Olympics and the challenges posed

by COVID-19, he’s experienced quite a lot.

Andrew’s passion for hospitality ignited during his time at Friday’s, working first as a ‘glassie’ and working his way up. Armed with a background studying marketing and business, he found himself drawn to the idea of hosting events and the prospect of ascending to leadership and management roles.

Enticed by a friend to help open a restaurant, his journey took him to Sydney before the 2000 Olympics, encountering a steep learning curve in restaurant management and finance.

The Olympics ushered in a wave of big venues and hospitality groups, leaving regular restaurants struggling to compete.

The restaurant was doing well prior to the Olympics, but there was a ‘financial hangover’ after the Olympics and so many small venues couldn’t compete, including his.

Approached to run Wagamama in Australia, a concept that had already found success in London, he embarked on a journey to the UK to immerse himself in the business. Returning with the knowledge of all that’s required for restaurant management, the first Wagamama opened in Kings Wharf, Sydney in 2002.

Understanding the industry’s demands and with a desire to step out on his own, Andrew opened Libertine Restaurant in Kings Cross in 2005. In 2009, he extended his success to Brisbane by launching Libertine at The Barracks, a venue that has since become a local institution.

“In an industry that often prioritises the novelty of new establishments, longterm restaurants like Libertine sometimes struggle to garner attention,” Andrew noted. He drew a parallel to the medical profession, where trust often comes with experience.

“A lot of media surrounds new restaurants, but very little time and effort is given to

restaurants that have been around for a long time. One of the few industries that longevity can work against you.”

Despite the challenges, Andrew emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards and not bowing to the latest trend to survive in a competitive market.

In late 2022, Andrew unveiled his latest venture, Tillerman Seafood Restaurant, a meticulously designed 120-seat establishment in Brisbane’s CBD and the first restaurant he has built from top to bottom since Libertine. As it turns out, the location is about one metre from Friday’s, where it all started.

Alongside friends Dennis Sheahan and Paul Piticco, Andrew co-owns several successful venues in Brisbane, including Walters Steakhouse, Popolo and The Gresham, under the banner of DAP & Co. Despite their shared ownership, each venue maintains its unique identity, ensuring that

returning customers always know what to expect.

COVID-19 posed significant challenges for the hospitality industry, but it also offered opportunities for reflection and adaptation.

“It gave us a unique chance to pause and reassess our core business. At The Gresham, for instance, we took the opportunity to shift to a New York-style bar with table service, a transition that might not have happened without the pandemic-induced environment for change.”

“There’s a quiet confidence in hospitality in Brisbane now that there hasn’t been before,” he added.

Andrew emphasised the importance of customer feedback in shaping their venues. While they continually assess their establishments, sincere customer feedback provides invaluable insights for ongoing improvement.

“Customer satisfaction and loyalty are the foundations of profitability,” he said.

Looking ahead, DAP & Co has ambitious plans to reinvent the Polo Club, a historic Brisbane CBD building which once house the McDonald Hamilton Steam Navigation company. This multi-level venue will be reinvented as Naldham House, featuring restaurants, bars and function spaces. It will pay homage to the city’s rich history and Andrew’s passion for heritage buildings and their stories.

Andrew Baturo’s journey through Brisbane’s hospitality scene is a testament to his resilience, adaptability and unwavering commitment to delivering memorable dining experiences. Cheers to that!

WHAT’S ON IN SENIORS MONTH QLD SENIORS MONTH Don’t miss this FREE local event!

Throughout the month of October, Qld Seniors are celebrated with events and activities held all across the region. Now in its 63rd year, the aim is to provide opportunities for people across all generations to connect and challenge our own stereotypical views of ageing and the aged. It also provides opportunities for people to discover local programs, services and volunteering opportunities, which may assist in reducing social isolation.

Meals on Wheels Moreton Bay Region Inc. (MoW) is actively involved in providing an essential service to the Samford and surrounding community and has identified new residents as well as socially isolated clients in this community who would like to engage in activities.

To celebrate and promote Queensland Seniors month, they will be hosting a morning tea community event on 26th October from 9am-12pm at the Samford Community Hub, 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford. Seniors are invited to drop in, meet local interest groups and learn more about the events and activities they can participate in.

“Our community has so much to offer seniors who are socially isolated. We extend this invitation to groups to participate. On the day, you are welcome to have a table with brochures, and/or set up your activity

problems, especially when we fear any loss of independence.

There are several ways we can improve our mental health. We can socialise as often as possible to overcome our loneliness. As outlined in the MoW article, come along on Thursday 26 October to Connectfest, which gives seniors a chance to enjoy a free morning tea, meet new people and old friends, and to see what amazing groups are in the Village for the young at heart.

Volunteering and giving back lifts our spirits. Meals on Wheels and Samford Support Network always need volunteers.

On Friday October 13 at 2.00pm, Crafting Kindness is working on preparation for the Wish-mas Tree for Christmas on Main Street on 2 December, as well as wrapping parcels containing books, and the bibs, burpers, bunny rugs and beautiful toys made by the Creative Charity Crafters for the mums and bubs in the maternity units at Caboolture and Redcliffe Hospitals.

On Friday October 20, join in the Big Blue Table Morning Tea at Long Yard Larder from 10.30am to 12.30pm to raise funds for Beyond Blue’s services to overcome depression. There will be raffles.

Exercise not only helps the body keep moving but fires up the brain cells too. On Friday October 20 at 3ish at the SCHUB, Cuppa and a Chat is followed by free Chair Yoga with Ruth Campbell. We ask for a $2 donation to cover hall rental costs and tea/ coffee. Join a walking group or become involved with the CMB (MBRC) sponsored activities to promote fitness.

LOCAL NEWS A LEARNING JOURNEY Yoga Australia trainer, teacher of Yoga teachers, and specialist in therapeutic yoga for the injured and the elderly, Ruth Campbell believes “we are not just what we eat, but how we move, how much strength and flexibility we maintain in our bodies and how well we control our minds. Yoga encourages us to balance all aspects: our physical body, our mental body, our energetic body (breathing), our intellect and our opportunity to find peace amongst the challenges of the 21st century.”

Ruth was not always an adherent of Yoga.

She grabbed opportunities to follow many diverse professions, each contributing to her present career. Ruth teaches beginners’ courses supported by City of Moreton Bay, multi-level classes for all body shapes and fitness levels, and a more advanced class based on alignment principles at Pine Rivers Yoga.

Her free Chair Yoga session every second Friday at the SCHUB at 3pm is magic. Not bad for a senior in her seventies.

When she left school to join the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1968, Ruth wanted to travel, become a leader and further her sporting career. Military training seemed a great preparation for life. Ruth became an officer with the Signal’s Corps, managing military communications centres, ensuring secure, concise message transmission.

“I learnt to be pedantically accurate in Signals to ensure military precision. Good communication is the key to everything we do. If we communicate effectively others will understand our message.”

Realising that ‘Words are the containers of meaning’ has carried over to her teaching as has her training for confident handling of challenges.

“We learn from our mistakes as well as our successes—each time I discover something has gone radically wrong I stop, think about it, and choose to move on with a more positive mindset.”

Ruth met her future husband when delivering a “secret” message to his unit in northern Scotland. After marriage Ruth left the Army. She was commissioned by the UK Sports Council to encourage participation in “minority” activities, like women’s sports and leisure pursuits including Yoga. The mindfulness rather than the competitiveness ignited her ongoing interest in Yoga.

Whilst skiing in Austria, her husband received a posting to somewhere called the Land Warfare Centre, Canungra. Back at their German base, they discovered they were off to Australia for two years. Return to the rainy UK and the potential for more Northern Ireland tours inspired a move to the Australian Army.

With three pre-school children, without family support, the family emigrated.

“I loved the opportunities to develop a career outside the constant postings that were the hallmark of the British A r m y. M y h u s b a n d ’s job hardly changed: one day he was wearing a British Army uniform, after flying across the world, the next day he was wearing an Australian Army uniform: same rank, similar tasks, and career security.

I was no longer confined by the traditional expectations of a British Army Officer’s wife.

I became a real estate agent.”

Prior to the GFC in 2007, Ruth and her business partner sold the business after many years in the industry to move on to other things—take a holiday, retire… Yoga!

“I had done a yoga teacher training course in 2001, thinking it may be an interesting retirement hobby. Little did I realise that this career change would evolve into another “full time” job!”

Ruth is proof that for many seniors, retirement is a misnomer.

Stingrays Open Day a Great Success The sun shone brightly on a beautiful day as the Samford Stingrays Swimming Club hosted their much-awaited public Open Day. The atmosphere was electric, the pool invitingly warm and the swimmers were brimming with enthusiasm to showcase their strokes and skills to a new audience.

The event saw an influx of new faces eager to experience the excitement of swimming and camaraderie at Samford Stingrays. The organisers had prepared a delightful surprise for attendees, with show bags and a free sausage sizzle and poppers to add to the festivities.

The day was filled with fun and laughter as swimmers of all ages and capabilities participated in both traditional stroke races, together with exciting pool noodle races, adding a splash of friendly competition to the mix. Some senior swimmers took the opportunity to showcase their skills and gave new members a taste of the thrill of competing in the water and what is possible

with persistence and commitment.

As the sun began to set and the day drew to a close, the focus shifted to the upcoming club nights, which commenced on 6th October. With a club vision to instil a lifelong love of swimming by providing a safe and fun environment to achieve individual goals, Friday club nights are all about having fun and enjoying the sport of swimming with your mates. The Seven of Ska – from local student to band leader On Saturday 28 October, Samford Live presents The Seven of Ska, a polished ska and reggae group – and local success story.

In the lead up, we chatted with frontman and Steiner graduate Emile Regano. Emile completed his entire schooling at Samford Steiner, finishing in 2018. Music was a big part of his school education, kicking off in year three with the cello.

This music education was complimented by informal learning at home where Emile’s dad taught him guitar. Their home was filled with music: classical, rock and roll and Latin. These early influences shaped Emile’s growth as a musician. As a teenager he became interested in reggae, and its precursor ska, particularly the music of the Jamaican greats Bob Marley and the Skatalites.

“This music had a whole different kind of rhythm and pulse” he notes, “you can pour all sorts of other influences into it.”

Playing in a ska band became a natural progression, with connections nurtured with Emile’s school music teachers retained.

Three are now band members: Brendan Hook on Tenor Saxophone, Highvale local Dave Rule on bass and Kieran Kuskopf on drums. They are joined by fellow Highvale resident trombonist Tim Lefever.

The band’s repertoire now includes over 80 percent originals, much written by Emile.

This creative input is taking ska in a new direction. Emile’s interest is writing good music that happens to be ska. Vocals have also been added since he took up singing lessons.

Throughout covid with the band unable to play, they continued to rehearse weekly: “the boys are invested creatively, this allowed us to build our repertoire” he said. Increasingly in demand, their monthly shows now feature in larger venues.

Emile is unsure if it is unusual for a young musician to play with his former teachers.

He does note, however, that increasingly the teachers defer to him! “It all works at a friendship level” he observes. While officially band leader, Emile says The Seven of Ska, are very much an ensemble, and

“the talents of each individual are drawn to audiences’ attention.”

We will have three speakers. First, Peter Storer will review the first decade of the project and show what we have learned from our 100 bird surveys. Then Stefan Hattingh will talk about the rehabilitation of injured Barn Owls. Finally, Josiah Rossic will introduce us to the frogs of the greater Samford district.

Council is introducing a new app that will make it easier and quicker to report issues.

Snap Send Solve will replace the existing MBRC app - it is free to download and a really easy way to report a large range of issues to Council. Using the app you can take a photo of the problem - whether it is a pothole, graffiti, road or parks maintenance issue, road signs or even parking issues this way Council staff know exactly what the issue is and importantly, where it is.

A selection of drop down options will allow you to categorise the problem, complete the information and send the request on its way. You receive a reference number, you can track the request and you will be notified once the issue has been resolved or actioned; the request will not be closed until this happens.

Most of us carry a mobile phone. Now you can lodge a request with Council quickly and easily while you are on the go.

Mount Samson Road, Closeburn I have received a lot of enquiries recently about the seemingly never-ending works along Mount Samson Road, Closeburn, between Hills Road to Old Mount Samson Road. I am pleased to say that things are moving along and the final seal should be going down from Monday 23 October,

weather permitting, taking around 5 days to complete.

VMS boards will be in place prior to the commencement of works to let drivers know. The initial holding seal on the road has been down for a number of months waiting for the weather to warm up to allow the final seal coat to be laid. The kerb and channel upgrade/renewal to this section has been designed to improve the road safety and drainage so that the road pavement is not damaged by water pooling, which has been an issue previously.

If all goes to plan, Mount Samson Road should be smooth sailing by November.

Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Phil!

It’s 2009 at Caloundra beach and a light aeroplane trailing a twisted banner behind it, unintentionally swan-dives into the surf, ending belly up in front of a gaggle of action-starved tourists. The pilot with 35 years experience clambers out, pleased with the adrenaline rush yet trying to figure out how he’s going to get home now, with more water in the fuel than usual. That’s our Phil.

He made international headlines that day.

Now he makes headlines at SAMS instead. It’s easy to understand why he’s our Chairman, he’s no stranger to a microphone and knows how to herd a bunch of cats who’d rather talk over him. Born in Melbourne, he moved to Nambour as a baby when his dad wanted to grow pineapples. Later, he variously

became an electrical fitter, Health & Safety director, got married and finally moved to Samford in 2021, joining SAMS soon after.

As a motorsport enthusiast with over 1000 laps of Mt Panorama under his belt, these days he rebuilds 70’s era muscle cars, yet still finds time to play with wood and steel at the Shed while amusing us with tales of his heroic piloting skills.

Samford Bowls Club Back in 2016 our club member, Mac Patterson thought it would be a great idea to have a competition with our fellow rural bowls clubs of Kilcoy, Woodford, Dayboro and Samford. Mac is not shy when it comes to a challenge having been the force behind our transition from grass greens to carpet plus shades. Mac was our Chairman through some difficult decisions, so getting these clubs together would be easy!

Each year, rounds are played at each club.

This gave all the clubs’ members a chance to experience the different ‘Greens’ while learning how each clubs does bowls and meeting and getting to know our country cousin bowlers.

On Thursday 28th September the 2023 final was played at Samford. We usually play three sets of ten ends with lunch after the first set. All was going to plan until the second set had to be abandoned due to the storm which flooded the greens. The scores were tallied giving Samford enough points to retain the Shield with Kilcoy coming second, Woodford third and Dayboro fourth.

This was the last year for the Mac Patterson Shield but not the end of our clubs getting together, as from 2024, we will be playing for the D’Aguilar Range Challenge Cup. We look forward to the continuing friendship and comradery. Many thanks to Mac for his idea and for his continued support of the Samford Bowls Club. This year he has accepted the role of Club Patron once again.

If you are interested in giving bowls a go but not sure if you want to commit to joining the club, there are some alternatives.

Village Barefoot Bowls on Thursday nights is a fun night with all levels of experienced players involved, from novice to those that have been participating for 20 years. Most players are not regular bowlers and not club

members. Players can use our club bowls - a quick lesson and they are ready to roll. Eight weeks, twice a year, once a week from 6pm till 9pm. Green fees each night with supper included. Contact Allan on 0429 919 486.

We also run a U3A bowls class as part of our Tuesday morning social bowls group.

All that is required is for you to join the U3A group or our club after you have had a couple of coaching lessons. No uniform, flat sole shoes and comfy clothes. Green fees each week which includes morning tea. Contact Janice on 0407 875 596.

World Bowls Championships was held on the Gold Coast from 29th August – 10th September. After 1,244 matches our Aussies did well. Out of the 44 competing nations, Australia claimed five of the eleven gold medals on offer, two silver and three bronze. All bowlers (if good enough) can work their way up from club to district to State then Australia. Like all sports, it takes commitment.

TGIF UPDATE Thank you to everyone that joined us for our special Thank Goodness it’s Friday’s Dance Night! The hall looked amazing with all the decorations and lighting; it was a great night. With the recent changes to the downstairs area, the new doors are making our TGIF events even better - the connection from the grounds to the dinning and kitchen areas is fantastic.

The next improvement on our to do list is some screening and garden area to beautify the area around the toilets We look forward to seeing this come to fruition.

OUT & ABOUT Samford Museum Displaying their gold for all to see are the Silky Oaks dotted throughout the greater Samford Valley.

So striking were their blooms in 1954, hotel licensee Geo Jago advertised the grand opening of the newly modernised hotel at Samford as the Golden Valley Hotel.

The name was in use until the late 1990s.

A survey directed towards discovering payable occurrences of another gold along the eastern scarp of the D’Aguilar range was carried out in July 1868 by geologist D’Oyly Aplin following James Nash’s discovery of the precious mineral at Gympie in 1867.

Aplin noted on 29th July 1868 how excited his party was when washing a few small fragments of quartz in the creek, two specimens were found with specks of gold in them. The outcome of the journey was disappointing. Fossicking continued on and off over the years without any significant discoveries being made.

If there is gold in those ranges, it is yet to be found. Not so shy are the Silky Oaks which put on their magnificent display of gold each spring.

Bouquets and many thanks to all those who helped in so many ways to make the Samford Community Singers Spring Concert such a success. On Sunday 1st October we filled the Farmers Hall with an enthusiastic audience, many of whom sang along with the familiar and cheerful songs presented by the group, led most capably by Monica Haworth and accompanied by Maureen Pears. Several soloists were featured. Interval was time for a delicious afternoon tea which included a range of tasty muffins to fit with our first song ‘The Jazzy Muffin Man’.

Men’s Shed The Australian Men’s Shed Association recently celebrated 30 years of the Sheds.

The Sheds provide a place for men to meet, learn, work and collaborate on meaningful projects. They are a place where friendships have been formed, ideas shared, support given, and jokes had over ‘smoko’. I’ve been proud to support our Men’s Sheds for many years and we’re lucky to have six Shed’s in several locations throughout our community.

Day for Daniel Day for Daniel, which is the largest child safety awareness day in the country, will be held on Friday 27 October 2023. Denise and Bruce Morcombe have done amazing work in highlighting the importance of child protection since tragically losing their son Daniel in 2003. KUPIDABIN NEWS Exciting News for everyone! At a special meeting the Trustees held in August with our Advisory Committee, it was suggested the Committee make application to the Qld Office of Fair Trading to become Incorporated and revive our original Committee name Kupidabin Cultural Association Inc. (KCAI) 2008 -2016. Our application was approved on 13 September. We have a Certificate of Incorporation certifying Kupidabin Trust Advisory Committee is now legally Kupidabin Cultural Association Inc. This has taken a very big load off my shoulders – KCAI will have their own executive committee and members to run their own meetings, fundraise and apply for grants etc. We are looking to increase our membership to run the Association as in previous years. The inaugural committee meeting for KCAI will be held at Kupidabin Cultural Centre, 7 Lyell Court Mt Samson,

Sunday 22nd October at 1.30pm. Do you have the time and desire to be part of a fast-growing ‘not for profit’ organisation to form a strong committee and make sure my vision to develop Kupidabin Wilderness as a Place of Peace and Harmony for all people for generations to come? Some of you have heard about the documentary film Vanessa had been working on to ‘Tell My Story’, interviewing people and videoing our gathering during the weekend in September 2022. This film was launched on 3rd September 2023 and will be shown around the world. I hope it will create more awareness of Kupidabin and my vision. INSPIREFLIX a charitybased film production had heard about the gatherings that we hold and loved capturing my story to share with the world.

The documentary was to be called ‘Maureen’s Story - The land that healed her’ but along the way, the title was changed to ‘The Gathering’. Thank you, Vanessa.

PLUNKETT MALLEE Mallees are small, multi-stemmed trees belonging to the Eucalyptus group. The trunks grow from a lignotuber which is a woody swelling of the root crown. The lignotuber stores food supplies and protects the stem from damage such as caused by fires.

The Plunkett mallee (Eucalyptus curtisii) naturally grows sporadically from Plunkett (hence its common name) south of Beenleigh, west to Dalby and Theodore and north to the Glasshouse Mountains, areas prone to bushfire. Much of the tree’s habitat has been destroyed due to clearing, timber harvesting, inappropriate (less than three years) fire regimes and poor grazing practices. As such, the Plunkett Mallee is listed as Near Threatened.

This attractive tree grows rapidly to its 4 - 6m height, with smooth grey to silvery bark that sheds in short, curly brown

fakes. The alternate leaves are generally lanceolate with glossy green upper and pale under surface. It has honey-scented, cream blossoms in spring. Like all eucalypts, these flowers form a cluster.

The petals and sepals of each flower are fused to form a bud cap or operculum that is shed when the flower opens to expose the many stamens (male, pollen-producing parts) that surround the single, central female carpel.

The tree is a significant wildlife habitat as the blossoms attract birds, butterflies, bees and gliders. The fruit, a woody capsule

or gum nut, can be found on the tree throughout the year.

Although naturally growing in shrubland and open forest, the Plunkett Mallee will grow in a range of soil types in full sun.

It has two growth forms, depending on its habitat. The shorter mallee form occurs most often on poorly drained, lowland sites, whilst the larger, single-stemmed form is found in better drained soils such as shale and sandstone and is invariably found in cultivation. A Plunkett Mallee will make a lovely, ornamental garden tree that usually flowers within three years of planting and is frost and salt tolerant.

by Dayboro Cowboys. Adam Heathwood retired on a fine 64, and handy scores down the order saw the Cowboys reach 177.

Aiden Halin’s bowling (3 for 14) and a breathtaking running catch from Rhys Gray were the highlights for the fielding side.

The Samford Village People’s batting was dismal, and Kane Zalewski’s 5 for 15 rivalled

Adam Heathwood’s knock for man of the match honours.

But they say ‘catches win matches’ and the Cowboys caught everything that was not already on the grass. Trent Leis with sure hands reminded us of when he was an NRL fullback with the other cowboys – the North Queensland Cowboys – in a different century.

It was a good game much enjoyed even though it was a smash up.

PS. In the Leg Ends v Samford Rangers game held in Highvale on 24 September, the arrival at the field was met with overcast skies and cooler weather. Rangers won the toss and elected to field.

A light but short shower passed over as the teams were warming up. Thankfully that was the last of the rain for the day which allowed for a very entertaining game.

Leg Ends took control despite good bowling from Rangers who fell short at the end by 7 runs.

SEASON OF CREATION Blessed be the Pets

from 1st September until 4th October which is the feast of St Francis of Assisi. We usually transfer that festival to the nearest Sunday.

This year it was on 1st October.

Each year there are themes that run over the four Sundays of September. This year we considered our relationship with the forests, the land, the outback/wilderness and rivers.

On St Francis Day, we celebrate the animals with which we share this planet.

Each year on St Francis Day our services are held in the courtyard between the church and the hall, rejoicing in the fresh air and the noise of the passing traffic. Also at this service, parishioners are invited to bring along their pets to be blessed. A couple of dogs are in fact regular attendees with their companion humans.

There is also an opportunity to have pets blessed at the October Samford Valley Markets. Due to a conflict of events, this will only be able to take place up until 10am.
