SAMFORD STATE SCHOOL CELEBRATES 150 YEARS

YOU’RE INVITED!!

From slate boards to iPads, Samford State School has seen it all in its prolific 150 years of teaching local kids. Revelling in this history, the school will hold a 150 Year Celebration on Saturday 10 September.

With gates wide open, the school will welcome all past, present and future students, staff, families and the greater community, to this milestone event.

Kath Downs is part of a group of dedicated parents and staff organising the celebrations including rides, food, a bar, stalls, stage performances, a bonfire, historic classroom and history display.

“After the last couple of years, COVID provided so many restrictions for celebration, so this year is all about providing something special the whole community can join in,” she said. “There will also be a historic café where all past students can see how the school has changed and share wonderful stories.”

Principal, Nicole Collins, notes the school has vastly matured from its humble beginnings in 1872.

“Back then, Samford State School had a one teaching principal, in one room with

18 students. Today the school boasts 30 classrooms, 88 staff members and 720 students,” she said. “The school now has state-of-the-art facilities, air-conditioning and iPads. Definitely no wood fire stove to be seen; imagine the risk assessment that would have to be completed today!”

Equipment, curriculum and the role of a school has evolved with the times, with modern-day Samford State School implementing support for positive behaviour for learning and student well-being.

“Once upon a time slate boards and chalk filled classroom desks, whereas now our children are growing up in a digital world.

The School and Festival Committee are grateful for community engagement received so far and would like to hear from other groups and individuals keen to contribute on the day.

“We are working with local community groups such as Samford Lions, Samford Rotary, Samford CWA and Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association to ensure this is an event for everyone.

Without these groups lending a hand it wouldn’t be possible to put on an event of this size,” Kath Downs said.

VILLAGE PUMP UPDATES NEXT SDPPA MEETING Wednesday 15th June 2022

WEATHER FORCES SHOW CANCELLATION A meeting of the Samford Show Society committee on Wednesday 25 May dealt with sobering assessments of the state of the waterlogged Samford Showgrounds and, with great reluctance, recommended unanimously that the 2022 Show could not go ahead.

The committee noted that many other show societies throughout Queensland are facing the same dilemma along with landholders and farmers encountering the problem of access to their properties.

The meeting began with a professional assessment from Showgrounds Resident Manager Terry Rowbottom, about the current condition of the site and what might be expected over the next few months with current rainfall forecasts.

“Every passing shower seems to just top up the underlying sogginess,” he said.

Holding any kind of large public event at the grounds for at least the next few months, regardless of rain that might fall in the meantime, would mean substantial damage and expensive repairs, even assuming that vehicles could get access to the grounds in the first place. Heavy vehicles coming on site for the rides and fairground area and car parking for Show patrons would quickly turn the prized Samford Showgrounds into an impassable bog.

Chief Cattle Steward Bronwyn Betts also confirmed that cattle judging, which has become a premier regional event for our Show, simply could not proceed in these conditions.

“The committee also considered the impact on stallholders and exhibitors, who will soon start pre-ordering supplies for food outlets and other features of our Show,” said Show Society President Terry Hogan. “We can’t ask them to carry the risk of the weather on top of what we already know about the state of the grounds and in particular the public parking area. If nobody can park, nobody can get to our Show.”

“The great irony for us is that we decided to confront the Covid challenge last year and went on to have the greatest Samford Show ever, and now we are dealing with something else we simply can’t control.”

The Show Society thanks its sponsors and supporters across the community and is actively exploring other options for events that might be able to use the grounds in coming months, but everything will be conditional on the weather. So, it’s fingers crossed, but with a strong dose of realism.

LOCAL NEWS MODERN RAT POISON IS KILLING POWERFUL OWLS (and potentially your pets!)

Chris W’s letter to the editor in the 27 May edition of the Pump about the tragic death of a young Wedge-tailed Eagle near the Samford Showgrounds is both shocking and very timely. BirdLife Australia has found that owls, frogmouths, eagles and other Australian birds are dying after eating rats and mice exposed to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). (NB: Warfarin is relatively ‘safe’, by comparison.)

It’s not just birds: any animal that eats rodents is at risk, including native mammals such as quolls, native reptiles such as snakes and goannas, and even your pet cats and dogs.

Key problems: • SGARs often don’t kill instantly (as claimed); poisoned rodents can move into new areas and spread the threat around.

• Rodents remain contaminated with SGARs for many months, even after they die.

Recent research has revealed that these rat and mice poisons are having a devastating impact on Powerful Owls. Livers of deceased birds were analysed and 37 of the 38 samples showed the presence of rodenticide, particularly brodifacoum, which is the most persistent and most common SGAR used in the rat poisons available on hardware and supermarket shelves. Nearly 60% had levels high enough to cause impairment (putting them at greater risk of being hit by vehicles) and 10% had levels high enough to kill the bird outright.

These are shocking statistics and we need to act now to save these magnificent birds.

Are you inadvertently killing Powerful Owls with rat pellets?

BirdLife Australia has a current campaign to ban the sale of SGARs to the general public, just as they already are in the US,

Canada and the EU. You can find the full details here: https://www.actforbirds.org/ ratpoison.

How you can help: • Use rat and mouse traps instead of bait.

• Rodent proof your home with wire mesh.

• If you must use rat bait, make sure the ingredients are warfarin, coumatetatryl or diphacinone.

• Only purchase baits that come in block or paste form, and deliver them in tamper-proof bait stations.

• Avoid bait pellets as these can be easily eaten by other animals.

• Sign the petition asking Bunnings to remove SGARs from their shelves (this outlet has around a 50% market share for rat poison).

LOCAL NEWS The weeks are passing by so quickly and it is amazing to think we are nearing the end of Term 2. The children are settled into their routines and are establishing wonderful connections with their teachers and friends. The play based structured learning environment has accelerated friendships, routines and parent interaction.

Both children and parents alike are enjoying the fast tracking of familiarity which the Samford Community Kindergarten inspires.

Recently the children were lucky enough to participate in the ‘Henny Penny Hatching Program.’ The program brings a little piece of the farm right to the classroom, allowing students to experience the wonder of nature first hand. The children were able to observe the eggs hatch and then enjoy the antics of the newly hatched chicks for the duration of the program.

Needless to say, the children loved watching the chicks grow and took wonderful care of them. It was such a great learning opportunity and it provided the chance to have many open-ended discussions about the life-cycle process.

The chicks have since been adopted by our families here at the Kindergarten and are now in their forever homes.

The Samford Kindergarten will be holding an open day for future enrolling families on Saturday 18th June from 10am to 12noon.

LOCAL NEWS CREATIVITY AND ACCESSIBILITY WINS TOP PRIZE Local artist Pia Robinson recently took out top gong at the Moreton Bay Region’s inaugural Creative Industries Demo Day with her ambitious project ‘Martin and Friends: Enabling Through Augmented Reality’.

The project aims to transform Martin Edge’s 2D artwork into Augmented Reality (AR) which can be accessed anywhere. This will create an inclusive cultural experience for young people on the spectrum or with sensory processing sensitivities.

The first iteration of the ‘Martin and Friends’ exhibition will launch at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery in early 2023. This will include a targeted, diversified engagement program to include working with local creatives, NDIS providers, publishing a children’s book, transforming Martin’s artwork into animation and activating through augmented reality outcomes.

Martin’s AR artwork will be accessible from the gallery, at schools, in hospitals, in communities or at home.

Pia has been working hard to secure a growing number of interested partnerships including Children’s hospitals and Samford State School.

“This is a very ambitious project which will make a massive impact, especially to the increasing number of all ability children at our local schools who identify as on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing sensitivities,” she said. “Diverse representation impacts aspiration – I want all kids to see their superpower and learn how to harness it.”

This project is also the only QLD and only visual arts initiative as part of this year’s Creative Partnerships Australia – Australia Cultural Fund MATCHlab recipient – whereby they will match funding raised of up to $5,000 until 14 June, as well as participating in a philanthropic professional development program.

QCWA Samford Craig Bauer North Brisbane Trees Local business North Brisbane Trees may be known for safely felling trees, but their services branch out to all other areas of arboriculture including tree maintenance. A love of the outdoors is what spurred director, Craig Bauer, to extend his knowledge in this field, qualifying as a consulting arborist to provide customers with the best information possible, helping them get to the root of their tree problems.

How did you get into tree removal and maintenance?

I obtained a business degree and worked in an office for 6 months and quickly realised I needed to be outdoors. I started a lawn care business which I enjoyed, however I was looking for more of a challenge. As I’ve always loved trees and tree climbing, I bought a brand new chipper in 2008, dove headfirst into arboriculture, and haven’t looked back.

Why was it important to attain your Certified level 5 Consulting Arborist qualification?

I wanted to increase my knowledge and provide a higher level of service to our customers, so in 2014 I commenced studying for my Diploma of Arboriculture and received the qualification 18 months later. I also completed my Tree Risk Assessment Qualification in 2017.

What other services do you provide that others may not be aware of?

Aside from tree removals and pruning, we also do tree consultations and reports and advanced tree planting. All of our tree waste either gets turned into aged forest or grinded mulch which we supply and spread, or firewood which we split and season at our Yugar Depot.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley LUNCH FOR UKRAINE No symbol or logo has become more recognisable this year than the Flag of Ukraine. When war broke out in Ukraine early this year, local resident Laura Iseppi reached out to her past work colleagues in the Ukraine. Their homes and their lives were being destroyed.

One friend, Inga from Kharkiv and her family had been forced to flee as their home and livelihood was destroyed by bombing and gunfire. The showcase horses which had earned them their livelihood were being scattered and left without food, water or shelter in the freezing winter. Inga and her family were continually moving across Ukraine to escape the gunfire. With many nights of no shelter, limited food and water, whilst helping as many others around her in need, action here was needed.

Over $20 million dollars has been donated

by Rotarians and friends to the appeal so far, with 70% of that money already spent in aid. The Rotary Foundation operates on less than 3% costs for administration hence providing effective, sustainable and proper use of all money raised.

Thank you to everyone who supported the appeal and the ongoing works of the Rotary Club of Samford.

The horses in this photo (left) are the ones that were recaught - the last ones left from the 25 Inga had. The horses were moved to elsewhere in Ukraine after this for their safety. Inga is currently trying to get them to Germany.

ROTARY AT WORK Last month three Samford Valley Rotarians headed down to a warehouse in Kingston to help load a truck bound for Suva with medical equipment.

Laura contacted the Rotary Club of Samford Valley and they agreed that a Lunch for Ukraine would take place. With 17 days to organise, everything went into overdrive.

Offers from local business like the Samford Garage and from other residents to help the lunch took place.

The Rotary world kicked in and Rotarians came to support the Samford Rotary Club from Boonah to Kingaroy. Over 50 people attended the lunch on a day that threatened to rain all day, but stayed away until just before the last clean up was done. $6,500 was raised from the lunch with proceeds shared between help for Inga and the Rotary Foundation Ukraine appeal. Between relief efforts and the funds raised at this lunch, Inga and family are now in a refugee camp in Poland.

This warehouse is the centre of Rotary’s Donations in Kind - a program by which donated items such as hospital and school equipment and books are collected, loaded into containers and sent to our Pacific neighbours for distribution by our sister Rotary Clubs in those countries.

Rotarians across Australia participate in regular rosters at a number of centres, donating their time to sort and pack this equipment. Over the several decades this program has been in place, thousands of containers have found their way to the likes of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, where Rotarians in those countries arrange distribution to many needy organisations.

Such an interesting and worthwhile experience.

GET INVOLVED FEEDING THE SOUL Generosity shows up in many ways – and in this case every day.

This group photo is just some of the 72 strong volunteers whose generosity of time provides connection and sustenance to more than 64 community residents each week. In fact, last month, these volunteers delivered 940 meals to clients across the village, valley and surrounding areas, up to Mt Mee, Mt Nebo and out to Warner, Cashmere, Eatons Hill and Dayboro.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, Samford Service Coordinators Tanja and Dee hosted a thank you morning tea at the SCHUB. Volunteers shared stories over a slice or two of pizza, lasagne and some lovely salads. The pizzas were kindly donated by the local Domino’s store in the Country Trader Centre, Main Street, as part of their community-based ‘Feed the Knead’ program.

Residents who receive meal deliveries are often isolated and very grateful to see a friendly face and the nutritious meal that comes with it.

“So many clients say they just wouldn’t have the time or energy to cook a balanced meal for themselves each day, and it’s ‘a god send’ for them,” said Dee. HELP NEEDED Tanja and Dee are looking for more volunteers to fill the roster throughout the week and provide back up to current

volunteers. Volunteers are required from 11am to 1pm weekdays, and volunteering frequency is completely flexible (monthly, fortnightly or weekly). You can also volunteer with a friend or family member to catch up on the latesst news while you drive around.

“It would also be great to have some kitchen volunteers to assist with tidying up and getting the delivery volunteers on the road,” said Tanja.

In addition to this, they are seeking funding or a generous donation of a 4WD, as deliveries to some of the more remote areas can only be accessed by this type of vehicle.

The continuous rains have highlighted the safety issues for volunteers, especially on the Dayboro and Kobble Creek runs.

“There is a client who lives alone, in an isolated location, and very much appreciates the deliveries. Unfortunately, he can only receive them when one of our volunteers with a 4WD is available.”

OUT & ABOUT MAKING BEAR TRAILS If you go down to the woods today, you may stumble across a uniquely made Bear Trail. Jonathan Dury, a.k.a. ‘Bear’, has crafted handmade walking trails from a young age, and now creates them on local properties.

After losing his corporate job during the pandemic and with a baby on the way, Bear’s neighbours and his wife Sonia inspired him to start Bear Trails, which he credits for finding a sense of purpose again.

“My love of land and country allows my creativity to be utilised. I began to create trail projects within the Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo community. People’s land that was once unusable or non-accessible now had new possibilities. Word of mouth spread about Bear Trails and my work has expanded to Samford Valley and the surrounding regions,” Bear said.

Bear’s trails have a unique rustic style, enhancing the natural beauty of his clients’ landscapes.

“I focus on getting a feel for the land and let the environment dictate the best course to take with trail work. Reading the land is like how an experienced surfer learns the best way to ride the waves. It has taken

more than thirty years to master this,” Bear said.

To keep his environmental impact low, Bear uses basic hand tools and no pesticides to clear the way for usable land.

“My main tools are a sharp shovel, which allows me to cut through the earth and a carpenter saw. I use whatever natural resources I find on the land such as timber, logs, boulders and stones. This helps erosion control and allows me to highlight and create particular features such as river crossings, fire pit areas, camping spots, artwork display zones, chill out/meditation zones, lookout points, wildlife and bird watching areas,” Bear said.

“A vital technique of Bear Trails is to allow for water to flow over the trails with minimal erosion. Due to all of this current rain, I’ve had many projects that have concentrated specifically on the diversion and channelling of water flow on clients properties.”

Despite using basic techniques, Bear’s years of experience allows him to work at a steady speed.

“I often get remarks about the pace and efficiency at which I am able to work. This is probably due to decades of experience,” Bear said.

“The most encouraging feedback is clients telling me how they are healthier as they enjoy the exercise of safely walking on their Bear Trails. Recently, I finished a very adventurous trail in Camp Mountain where the client’s inspiration was to walk their dogs on the property,” he said.

“One very positive feedback has been that clients feel safer when they can visually see where they are walking without the fear of stepping on snakes. Bear Trails can also be regarded as a firebreak on properties.”

By turning in the office for this outdoors venture, Bear has strengthened his connections with the land, his community and himself.

“I would wholeheartedly like to thank my neighbours, community and wife, because Bear Trails allows people to love their land even more. It brings me a sense of joy and purpose into my life, so I don’t take Bear Trails for granted. It is a real privilege to be able to do this.”

YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS How to protect your assets in a new relationship If you are starting a new relationship, you may be concerned about safeguarding your assets. This is particularly the case for people who’ve already been through a divorce and are wary of losing their property a second time around.

A financial agreement – also called a binding financial agreement, a BFA or pre-nup – can be used to quarantine most assets, including your home, an inheritance you have received or expect to receive, your business and your superannuation interests.

You can enter into a financial agreement before starting a new relationship, during the relationship or after you have separated.

A financial agreement can be made between de facto and married couples alike.

It is essentially a contract between you and your partner which sets out the property that each person is to retain in the event that you separate.

In order for a financial agreement to be considered binding, it must comply with the Family Law Act. Both parties must receive independent, specific legal advice prior to signing the agreement, and each person’s lawyer must sign a certificate to that effect.

A financial agreement can be used hand in hand with estate planning if you wish to protect particular assets for children from a previous relationship.

SAMFORD SCOUTS ARE 60!

This year, Samford Scout Group is celebrating their 60th Anniversary.

Launching in 1962, the subdivision of Samford area farms into acreage homesites had commenced and many new families moved into Samford Valley seeking new outdoor adventures.

Since then, the S a m fo r d S c o u t Group has been providing plenty of adventure for generations of young people and adults. Scouting is now more than ever providing a

welcoming environment for boys and girls from 5 years and upwards that is fun, challenging, inclusive and adventurous.

At their recent Annual Report night, Group Leader, David Reed led a presentation of the history of the Group to invited guests and parents. Samford Bowls Club Winter has arrived and the brave players who took to the Green on Tuesday morning (31/5/22) were set a task of trying to hold onto their hat and coat while putting a bowl down the rink. As usual with this group, there was plenty of laughter and lots to chat about over a welcome morning tea.

Some exciting bowls events have taken place at Samford. The Golden Valley Mixed Medley was played on Sunday 29th May with 14 teams of 4 - Ladies Pairs and Men’s Pairs in the morning and mixed Fours in the afternoon. All teams were playing for the generous money prize donated by QUANTA and the BDBA sponsors of the day. Barry Maher’s team won first prize, Rod Palmer’s team came second and Chris Campbell’s team, third. Lunch was prepared by the ladies of the Samford CWA. On Tuesday morning 24th May the club held a combined day with all club members invited to join the combined U3A/social bowls group. The Movement Team from Samford sponsored the morning with Zarni, Courtney and Kelsey coming along to offer some of their expert advice. The ladies had our members up and moving during their morning tea break. After the break, our club

was then able to turn that around when we coached The Movement Team ladies in how to bowl. Who knows, we may have a new team for the Village Barefoot Bowls!

LOCAL HISTORY Samford Museum Museum Musings From a large poster – ‘Samford Railway Estate’ - donated by the Currell family to the Samford Museum’s collection in late 1980s, we learn some of the “promotional speak” Isles, Love & Co Auctioneers of Brisbane were using prior to their Saturday 13 November 1920 auction.

‘Samford Railway Station Estate contains 56 valuable township blocks in this new important centre.” “Close to Mt Glorious; Glorious scenery; Mountain air and climate; Brilliant Future and Rising values a dead Cert.; Must become popular and populous.’

(These predictions were correct) ‘Only an hour away.’ (from Brisbane by train?) The estate was bounded by Station Street, Main Street and Samford Creek.

Close to Mt Glorious in 1920? Information from Brisbane’s Back Door by Helen Horton (published 1988) access to Mount Glorious in 1920 was via a track from Cedar Creek.

On the day of the auction, a free rail journey to Samford and back by McKeen rail car leaving Central Station at 1.30pm was provided: ‘Payment Terms – 1 pound deposit; 10/- per allotment per month; Interest 6%.’

A more formal identification of the land is described - ‘Being Subs 1-56 of Resub1, of Sub.1 of Por.60, Parish of Bunya, County of Stanley. Note - Area of creek frontages approximate only. All dimensions subject to deposited plan.’

The business centre that had established along Main Street close to the station included the Baker, Butcher, Hotel, Blacksmith, Farmers Co-op store, Farmers Social Hall, Post and Telegraph Office and Samford Public Hall. Gayford & Co’s office (Gayford & Shepard Auctioneers - from Trove) is also named. Two private homes had been built.

Within the railway grounds was the Station, Station Master’s house, goods shed and trucking yard. Today’s links with the past are the butcher shop (which is now Samford Hire), the Samford Hotel (many times renovated) and the extended and modernised Farmers Hall.

More historical information can be found on the plaques of the Samford Heritage Trail or at Samford Tourist Centre in John Scott Park (the park is the former railway station grounds).

GET INVOLVED SAMFORD HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT Under the umbrella of Samford Lions SMALL THINGS TO KEEP US CONNECTED On Friday 10 June at 3.00pm, Don’t Ever Think All Is Lost, facilitated by Kim, is meeting at the SCHUB. This group welcomes everyone, especially those who have experienced anxiety or depression.

This month a psychotherapist is talking about where our sense of self comes from, and how we can develop a stronger sense of who we are.

DETAIL follows our regular cuppa and chat which starts at 2pm as part of Friday Afternoon at The SCHUB, which now offers a writing support group on the first Friday of the month, DETAIL on the second Friday, Crafting Kindness which begins on the 17th, the third Friday, and the Good Stuff Ideas Forum on the fourth Friday.

Lucie, the facilitator of Crafting Kindness, is seeking wool, crochet hooks, knitting needles, scissors, old cards, card, material, buttons, sequins, glue and any interesting bibs and bobs to make small and larger gifts and cards. These will surprise folk who might need something to brighten their day, or to thank folk who always give a little extra care in a shop, surgery, neighbourhood, or community group. We hope the idea of random acts of kindness will further blossom in our community which has always had a giving heart.

A kindness can be as simple as a smile, a hug, a compliment, or as energising as a surprise left on a table, or a counter, or delivered to a home. Crafting Kindness is a chance to learn new skills or share your own expertise in a craft. It will run from 3.00pm to 5.00pm on the third Friday, but you are welcome to come and create while you chat, on any Friday afternoon. Hope to see you there.

Samford Pickleball Open Days!

Come and try the fastest growing sport in Australia – Pickleball - a paddle sport you can learn in minutes and can play for a lifetime. A mixture of badminton, table tennis and tennis, create a sport that’s fun for everyone – and you can play this right here in Samford!

“All of our new players can play a match within about 20 minutes of practice and now enjoy our round robin match play sessions twice a week,” said Zak Davidson, who started Samford Pickleball off the back of his tennis centre, Samford Valley Tennis.

“Pickleball is more versatile than tennis, because you can have 4 players of different skill levels enjoy a competitive match. The rallies are generally longer, while still being less physically demanding compared to other racket sports.”

Along with their match play sessions, Zak runs occasional training sessions where players can improve their skills, preparing players for the many pickleball tournaments held throughout the year.

The next tournament is at Shaw Park, Wooloowin on June 25th - 26th. This will be the first pickleball tournament for Zak and many other Samford Pickleball players.

The tournament is expected to see around 150 players compete in a variety of age and ability divided divisions with singles, doubles and mixed doubles played.

Samford Area Mens Shed FAREWELLING FRIENDS When a tree eventually falls back to earth to rot and return to the soil from where it had originated, it is considered lifeless. But that is not always the case. Quite often, out of the debris that had once been a tall and majestic tree, there grows a beautiful, young green sapling. Such - a tree isn’t actually lifeless at all: it is still alive – but in a different way!

That analogy comes to mind when thinking of two Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) members who recently passed away.

Barry Minter left this life on 4th May 2022.

Barry was elected as Chairman of SAMS in 2014 and participated in many of SAMS activities including Tuesday Talkfest, Friday Fellowship, Golf and RDA Poo Patrol. He also contributed his horticulture skills to the SAMS stand at the 2014 Garden and Lifestyle Expo. Barry was also an active member of SAMS lawn bowls team in the community competition hosted by the local lawn bowls club.

Trent Horton passed away on 20th May 2022. Trent was admired as a true gentleman and was well known as being a very kind and generous man, who loved to tell humorous stories with the other men as he got involved in the fellowship and activities at the Shed.

Although both men have left this life, they are still very much “alive” in the memories, hearts and minds of the men at SAMS and their families.

DAYBORO HISTORY View from “Myola” looking towards Brisbane City Thursday 2nd June 2022 will see the end of an era with the last members of the Bond family moving from Bond Road, King Scrub.

Graham Bond sold the last section of his property in April 2022. The original property was selected by his Great-grandfather William Henry Bond on 7th February 1878.

William Henry Bond acquired a number of other properties over the years. The property was originally known as Rossmoyne and later Willow Valley.

Robert Bond selected Portion 14V Parish of Pine, further up the hill, on 9th January 1888, 134 years ago. He died of dysentery in the Brisbane Hospital on 1st November 1888, aged 33 years. His brother John Thomas Bond took up residence on the property about June 1890. This property was known as Myola. The last owner of the property was his grandson, Robert James (Bob) Bond, who passed away on 25th November 2021.

In the distance, you might be able to see the high-rise buildings in Brisbane CBD on the horizon.

ARANA HILLS LIBRARY SPECIAL EVENTS

Automated Weather Stations for Division 11 Lindsay Road, Mount Glorious will be the location for one of the regions new Automated Weather Station (AWS) unit to be installed by Council’s Emergency Management and Public Safety Department.

This station will be able to provide important weather data above 500m and will allow better weather forecasts for planned burning and bushfires along the D’Aguilar Range.

A second AWS will be installed at Samford Parklands which has historic weather data from the old manual weather recordings from the CSIRO Research stations days. This will improve weather forecasts between Samford and Dayboro. Installation will occur during June and it is estimated this will take around 2-4 days to complete, however, the actual dates for work will be dependent on weather conditions at the time and completion of installation stages.

This project is part of Council’s disaster management and preparedness services for the provision of enhanced localised weather observations and monitoring of bush fire and flood weather conditions. The weather station units are a compact design requiring minimal space, they will be solar powered and positioned to ensure minimal visual intrusion, however, they are required to be positioned in specific locations to provide optimal site condition requirements, to allow them to work as they are designed to do.

There will also be weather stations constructed at Delany Road Park in Burpengary which will provide weather data to improve forecasts between Murrumba Downs to Elimbah, with other stations to be located in Woodford and Bribie Island. With these five new weather stations coming on board, there should be valuable data being collected across the region.

11th June: Music with the Rock n Roll Stars with About Face is planned. This event will be taking place in the Dayboro Community Hall so it will definitely be going ahead!

Pizza, hot dogs and a bar will be available from 5:30pm with the band starting at 6:30pm. 23rd July: Christmas in July Music Under the Stars with the Bluesuites Quartet (playing jazz tunes and unique renditions of some classic Christmas carols) at Silverwood Cafe. Come and enjoy a special Christmas Menu. Bookings are essential if you wish to dine so have a chat to Jess.

Music Under the Stars enjoyed entertainment from Jazzy Chats with their awesome mix of classic jazz, swing, and rock pieces. Thanks to all those who attended this brilliant evening.

LOCAL NEWS MULTIPLE AWARDS FOR LOCAL ARCHITECTS Samford Village based Architectural practice Bligh Graham Architects was thrilled to receive multiple awards at the recent Australian Institute Architects Awards for the Brisbane Region. Chris Bligh and Sonia Graham’s project, ‘Live Work Share House’ was awarded in two categories New Houses and Sustainability, as well as being named House of the Year.

The Live Work Share House is their house (5 bed), office (7 seat) and secondary dwelling (1.5 bed), which they built in the heart of the village. The experimental house was designed as a test case for the way in which flexible living and working could be achieved on a suburban block.

The need for such housing types is pressing, given the issues of housing affordability and the need for more smaller homes, following the reduced prevalence of the nuclear family. Additionally, the increasing numbers of people working from home (especially now in these Covid times) and the need to densify the suburbs to sustainably house a growing population, requires new types of housing designs.

The principle aim of the design was to ensure that the live, work and share components happily co-exist, whilst achieving for each an obvious entry and good engagement with the street, as well as excellent passive thermal performance, a direct connection to greenery and an outdoor area.

Leaving space for gardens was a key part of the design which, despite accommodating a house, office and flat, has a smaller footprint than that allowed under as of right provisions of the Qld Development code.

Much to their delight, their garden was recently visited by Costa from Gardening Australia during the Edible Gardens Trail weekend.

The above recognition builds on the previous awards received by Bligh Graham Architects including for their Cedar Creek House and Studio and the Samford House, the latter being awarded the top Architects Institute prize for residential architecture in 2008. Recently, the Samford House 2 project in Currell Circuit, sold for what is a record amount for the Samford Valley.

LOCAL NEWS LIGHTING HORSE ARENAS Is it possible to light a horse arena with solar lighting?

If you ask Jeff Florance from BlackFrog Solar Lighting, the answer is yes, but you need to consider multiple factors.

Jeff has 20yrs experience in solar lighting, has his own stock horses, as well as competition riding in the South Burnett region. He says the first thing you need to know is how much you want to spend.

“Solar horse arena lighting (whether solar or mains powered) can cost between $5000 to $150,000 (or more.) The cost depends greatly on the amount of light required, the type of installation and your personal expectations,” he said.

The next thing to consider is what lighting level is needed. Lux levels - the measurement of light reaching the arena surface - vary greatly and using measurements such as Watts or Lumens will not tell you how much light will be provided at ground level.

“Green grass absorbs the light, while white sand reflects the light providing greater brightness,” he said.

Pole height, surface reflection and light overlapping need to be considered as well as whether you need the lights to perform general groundwork in your arena, or if there is a commercial application and compliance to Australian Standards is required. Although there is no set standard for horse arena lighting, there are guidelines and safe lighting recommendations depending on each arena.

Do you need poles and if so what type and height?

“This is a ‘how long is a piece of string’ type question. Many factors affect the pole design - height requirement, location, type of light distribution, size of arena, required light levels, reflective surface, soil acidity and off course your available budget,” said Jeff.

There are lots of solar lights on the market and many factors to consider including warranty, maintenance and lighting distribution.

“The light type and brightness levels will also determine how high your light can be mounted. Sports stadium lights can be 30m or more, community sports fields around 12 to 15m, but residential horse arenas can achieve good results with poles around 7 to 8m.”

Blackfrog Solar is looking for one private horse arena owner in SE Qld to test a new range of arena solar lights and tilt poles to install at cost price for a case study.

OUT & ABOUT BOOK REVIEW THE LOST MAN Jane Harper Capturing the true Australian p s yc h e , J a n e Harper paints a believable picture of what life is like in the outback: the freedoms, challenges and responsibilities of owning a cattle station.

Her novel encapsulates the complexities of relationships and friendships among those whose survival depends on relying on those around them. It also encompasses the isolation of those living on large family properties where contact with the outside world is minimal.

When Cameron is found dead, Harper takes the reader on a journey to discover the truth surrounding the circumstances that led to his death. With many characters and their stories intertwined, the reader is kept in the dark as to the truth behind what really happened.

Was it suicide? Was it murder? Or was it a death brought about by his harsh struggles with the land?

Throughout the novel, I thought Cameron’s death may have been murder due to the personal circumstances in which he found himself in, leading up to his disappearance.

As much as I enjoyed reading this book, I found it very slow at the beginning, difficult to get into. As I persevered, it became a page turner that made me anxious to have the puzzle solved. The clues and complexities along the way, especially when it related to the investigation into Cameron’s disappearance, kept me engaged in the story. The characters had a depth to them which made them believable and human.

Not one of my favourite novels, but I would still recommend it as a good read.

Brendale Evening VIEW Club Celebrates 100 Years of The Smith Family This night was truly a celebration of friendship and community as members of the Brendale Evening VIEW Club joined together to celebrate The Smith Family’s Centenary of commitment to improving the lives of Australian children.

Members came together for a fun filled 1920’s themed Flapper night, dusting off their pearls, feather boas, long gloves and all things roaring twenties, to make this another amazing fundraising evening.

There was some work to do beforehand, personally decorating their 100-year celebration glasses to kick off the night - the spectacles were a spectacle!

To keep the fun alive and the brain working, a quiz was played, followed by a little bit of retail therapy with a Bring and Buy table organized by the Event Co-ordinators Gerry and Judy.

As the night was a celebration of The Smith Family, it was only fitting

that our guest speaker was the Zone Councillor, Lyall, who played some short videos and spoke about the foundation, the values of The Smith Family and how it has been creating better futures for young people for a century. We are proud to contribute to the ongoing legacy of The Smith Family by sponsoring eight students through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program.
