How Does Sugar A ect Your Teeth?

Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums.

Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out:

Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings –anything high in fructose.

What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health?

- Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste

- Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth

- Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean

- Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment
