PUMP VThe The

Almost 12 months ago, Community Bank Samford merged its Brendale and Samford branches and undertook a major refurbishment of the Samford site. Since then, the idea of a community mural to enhance the side of the building facing Station Street had been planned. On Friday 2 June after many, many months of collaboration, the bank’s gift to the community was unveiled.

“When the concept of a community mural was discussed, we knew we wanted it to be created by local artists, to depict the past, present and include our indigenous connections, as well as all the things that are unique to Samford – our flora, fauna, buildings and lifestyle,” said Senior Branch Manager Mandy Bell.

It was a big ask for a big space and so Mandy and the Pine Rivers Community Finance Board approached Creative Samford to discuss the potential of bringing the concept to fruition.

Creative Samford’s then President, Marie-Ann Coyle was excited by the idea, seeking interest from their members to paint the five panels. The creative

process began, designs for the five panels were finalised and the artists collaborated throughout to ensure the panels flowed and connected.

“On behalf of the PRCF Board and Community Bank Samford team, we are thrilled to finally unveil this mural – our gift to the Samford community,” said Pine Rivers Community Finance Board Chair Malcolm Frizzell. “We wanted to give something back to this community that had not only come together to start this community bank, but has supported it’s development by banking with us, since we began in 2002.”

Bendigo’s Community Bank model was developed 25 years ago and there are

now more than 300 Community Banks throughout Australia. These local banks deliver the full range of traditional banking services, but unlike traditional banks, up to 80 per cent of all profits are returned to shareholders and granted to local communities. Last financial year, across the 49 community banks in Queensland, $7 million was distributed to local community groups and clubs.

So far, Community Bank Samford’s grants program has distributed almost $1 million dollars. As part of its 21st birthday celebrations, the Board will announce a very special grant round later in the year, which they hope will make a huge difference to local community projects, and in turn, many people in this region.

Next time you’re walking in the village or enjoying a coffee and a bite to eat at The Long Yard Larder, who by the way did an awesome job of canapes and drinks at the launch event, check out the mural and drop into the branch while you’re there. The team would love to help you with your banking needs and when they do, you’ll be helping the local community too.

A very busy fortnight on the Brisbane Airspace front.

As SAAAG and the BFPCA prepare to ramp up for their first protest, we have been letterbox dropping to local residences aligned with flightpaths. Unfortunately, we did not get to everyone before we ran out of pamphlets. I was more than impressed with the overall support from friendly residents asking what we were up to and the inquisitive questions they were asking. A lot were happy just to know we were out there working on their behalf and were keen to join our groups.

Special thanks go to our residents Kate, Don, Simon, Sandi, Anne, Craig and Greg who volunteered their precious time and energy to deliver pamphlets. You are all amazing!

In the lead up to the protest, the BFPCA has received an influx of members and RSVP’s. It’s not too late to get involved.

Saturday 10th June – 9am. Brisbane Airport Corporation, 11 The Circuit, Brisbane Airport. (Near DFO)

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind the community to be courteous to each other online or when sending messages and emails. Flight path issues are often raised on our local Samford Valley Noticeboard Facebook page. Whether you are affected or not, please remember to offer a little empathy to those that are. A GUTSY WIN AT EUROPEAN TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Max Neumann’s recent victory in the PTO (Professional Triathletes Organisation) European Triathlon Championship in Ibiza, Spain is a true testament to his exceptional athleticism, resilience and dedication. Possessing the trifecta of swimming, cycling and running abilities, as well as an indomitable spirit, Neumann has solidified his place among the elite athletes in the world of triathlon.

28 year old Neumann, who is coached by his brother Mitchell, attributes his significant career milestone to the unwavering support of his close-knit family and his straightforward training approach. The ex-Marist College Ashgrove student grew up in Mt Samson, developing a passion for cross-country racing from an early age.

The PTO European Triathlon Championship features a standard distance race covering a total of 100 kilometres, including a 2-kilometre swim, 80-kilometre cycling leg and an 18-kilometre run. This innovative middle-distance contest held in Ibiza in May, marked the first time that reigning Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt, along with London and Rio gold medalist Alistair Brownlee, and the Beijing Olympic champion Jan Frodeno had competed against each other in the same race.

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Max Neumann emerged as the victor, outlasting the late charge from PTO World #1, Blummenfelt. Notably, Neumann managed to keep Frodeno (4th) and Brownlee (6th) at bay throughout the race.

The race began with the swim leg in the calm waters of sunny Ibiza, with Max emerging from the water within 20 seconds

of the race leader, Aaron Royle. The 80km cycling course saw Alistair Brownlee take the lead, forming a group alongside Neumann and Kyle Smith. Brownlee and Smith were the first to dismount their bikes.

The outcome of the race hinged on the 18km run leg. Initially, Brownlee had gained a significant advantage of nearly half a minute over his competitors. However, Neumann displayed extraordinary determination and gradually closed the gap, surpassing the British athlete around the midway point. This pivotal moment shifted the dynamics of the race in Neumann’s favour.

Despite Blummenfelt’s intense late surge, almost catching up to Neumann, the 27-yearold, ranked seventh in the world, managed to maintain his lead, sealing a memorable

victory under the Spanish sun. With this remarkable achievement, Neumann not only secured a well-deserved $100,000 prize, but sees him climb the world rankings to No. 4, and named PTO’s May Athlete of the Month. As Max’s journey continues to unfold, we eagerly anticipate even more extraordinary achievements and inspiring performances from this emerging champion.

TALES OF MYELLA

Jean Smith could work in a muddy dairy all day and still be well-groomed at dusk. At 95, sparky Jean, resident of Myella, Highvale since 1950, still babysits grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her children, Janice, Lois and Malcolm, brought up to follow the ten commandments which Jean thought were excellent guidelines for being a good mother, live on portions of the old family farm near her.

Jean chose Alan, who she’d known all her life, as her life partner. She waited until he stopped flirting with other locals, before marrying him in 1949. In 1950, Jean and Alan partnered with her parents-in-law to buy Myella. The agent showed them the place from the top of a hill. They saw mountains and lush green grass, a dairy and pineapples, a place of beauty. They didn’t see how run down the place was, despite the valiant efforts of the inexperienced previous owner.

The Smiths survived a perilous journey from Montville. The truck carrying most of their worldly goods, finally bogged to the axles on the wet road outside their new home. Three generations moved into the old place as Alan’s grandmother joined them. Janice, first of the fourth generation, arrived in ’51. In ’53, Jean prepared for her next child. She travelled to Newmarket for checkups as there was no doctor in Samford. Janice, on seeing a cot and pram in the bedroom, asked Jean if two babies were coming. Jean assured her there was only one. After Lois arrived, the midwife told Jean to keep going as there was another bub tucked away. Half an hour later Lois’s twin, Malcolm greeted the world, shocking his mother. Jean who already ran all day, became a super-organised marathon athlete working all day between farm and house.

The old house was a bit crowded so Alan, his father and a carpenter built a

small place for Jean and their little brood. The old house, thirteen steps high, was lowered, and an annexe built for Alan’s grandmother. When she passed away, Jean and Alan swapped houses with his parents as the old place was bigger.

Myella had no electricity until 1956. Nappies were hand washed and boiled in a kero tin on the stove for which wood and chips had to be chopped. Cooked meals revolved around farm chores. Water was piped to the houses from the hand dug well. The kerosine refrigerator was a constant fire hazard. A copper boiled bed sheets and dirty clothes clean but not together. In the dairy a hand pump wound up the machines for milking each morning and late afternoon. Alan’s ute with a tank in the back brought water from the creek to the dairy so it could be scrubbed scrupulously clean after every milking. The dairy was redesigned to have a ramp built for the cows.

Then there were the pineapples which were handpicked, put into baskets and carried, with as many under the empty arm as possible, to the ute, to be taken for packing by Alan and his dad. Lucky

they were smooths not roughs. Everybody worked. When Alan took the pineapples to the cannery, he picked up pineapple pulp and broken and burnt Weetbix from Sanatorium for cattle feed.

Entertainments were simple: tennis, an occasional dance and special treats at the Exhibition speedway. The family and their neighbours made their own fun, building a close community. They fought bushfires and built sports field fences together. When the Smiths were hit by an URTI virus, the neighbours pitched in to help with milking. Jean was proud when Alan stripped to his underwear in the middle of winter as they were heading home, giving his warm clothes to Alan Morrison, who, in only a singlet and shorts, was rushing to attend to a serious accident nearby.

Jean and her family ran a very successful dairy and pineapple farm, based on love, cooperation, respect and hard work: values have lasted through another two generations.

MAIN & JUNCTION ST DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Over the last few months, there has been much discussion in our village and on social media about the proposed new development on the corner of Main and Junctions Streets. Residents of Junction Street and many concerned local residents formed their own working group and have fought very hard to maintain the integrity of their street and their lifestyle. Concerned residents attended Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) meetings to voice their concerns and seek support from them, on behalf of the community, to assist with a response to the DA (MBRC DA 2022/4057).

SDPPA Vice President Don Cousins reviewed the DA and engaged a Town Planner to review the application. Subsequently the SDPPA submitted a formal response to MBRC re the DA, it was one of more than 300 submissions received, the vast majority of which opposed the Application.

On 31 May, Don was invited to address the MBRC Council Meeting on behalf of residents. He stated that while supporting appropriate development aligned with community needs, the SDPPA argues that this particular development deviates from Council zoning codes and fails to embrace the rural ambiance and local township character of Samford Village. The main concerns raised by residents are as follows:

1. Material Change of Use: The proposed development aims to convert residential properties on

Junction Street into commercial premises, thereby transforming quiet residential streets into busy thoroughfares. The SDPPA emphasises that the commercial development should not take priority over the residential precincts of Samford Village, which were purchased with the understanding that zoning would not be impacted by a commercial business.

2. Traffic Issues and Car Parking: The submission highlights significant concerns about increased traffic along Junction Street, Progress Street, Ingrid Street, Bergman Street and Cash Avenue. The anticipated traffic volume, including up to 200 vehicles per hour, significantly exceeds current figures and will disrupt residents’ lifestyles. Additionally, the logistics of truck access to the proposed loading dock and limited parking provisions pose further challenges.

3. Height, Form, and Use: The proposed building exceeds the maximum height limit and does not align with the character and heritage of Main Street or the residential nature of Junction Street. The removal of existing trees and lack of substantial landscaping exacerbate the building’s imposing presence, which contradicts the low intensity and small-scale outcomes desired by the community.

4. Needs analysis: A number of the submissions to Council disputed the DA’s Needs Analysis, they noted that there are ample respective services available within the Village to meet the needs of the Valley and surrounding Districts going forward. In conclusion, the SDPPA emphasised that Samford Village’s essence lies in its Main Street, which reflects the natural character, history and relaxed semi-rural lifestyle of the area. The proposed development’s oversized nature and failure to integrate with the existing streetscape and village vibe are major concerns. The core issue with the development lies in its material change of use, converting peaceful residential streets into busy thoroughfares to accommodate a commercial premise. The SDPPA strongly opposes this transformation and urged the Council to consider the community’s perspective when making a decision.

MBRC advised that it had written to the developer on 30 May, addressing many of the aspects raised in the various submissions. We will continue to update the community on this application.

Protecting our Local Rainforests for the Future

World Rainforest Day is celebrated on 22 June and as the land rises from the floor of the Samford Valley up to the peaks of Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious within the D’Aguilar National Park, we reflect on the fact that rainforests are essential to life on Earth.

Not only do they provide air, water, medicine, food and shelter to a multitude of living beings, they are also one of our best natural defences against climate change, because of their capacity to absorb greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Within central Samford, a project has been underway to regenerate the bushland site alongside Cash Avenue and the Samford Creek. This area is of very special significance within the Moreton Bay Region as it contains remnant riparian rainforest and is at the very highest level of the Government’s endangered fauna classification. It is also an important area for local wildlife!

Samford Landcare has been overseeing this project with the Samford Scout Group. It will have two primary areas - the Scout Trails Garden; and multiple smaller gardens on the Cash Avenue border. When construction commences on the nearby footpath linking Cash Avenue north to south, this will also provide a safe, all-weather pathway for travel and access to the garden areas.

Another group that has been of great assistance with this project has been the team from the Marist180 traineeship program, creating the trail paths and building creek viewpoints. The trainees are able to be trained in landscaping and construction skills working on the site, as they progress towards further training or an apprenticeship.

The gardens are all open for viewing and new recruits are always welcome at Samford Landcare and Marist180.

2023 DAYBORO DAY PARADE

Dayboro District Historical Society Inc was formed in February 2004. Since then, we have participated in the Dayboro Day Parade every year and have also had an historical display, initially in the old Bank building. This was re-opened on Dayboro Day after substantial renovations and has been re-named the Dayboro Meeting Hub. More recently our display has been at “Dayboro Cottage” where our Society runs the Dayboro Information Centre.

We are joined in the parade by descendants of Dayboro district’s early pioneering families. This year, the following families were represented. The year they settled in the district is shown after their name – McKenzie (1866), Rohlf (1867), Bond (1869), Dietz (1869), Warburton (1871), Nugent (1872), Lacey (1879), Kenman (1879), Heathwood (1886), Francis Williams (1887) and Kelly (1905).

The first Dayboro Day Festival was held in June 1992. In 1995 a Dayboro District Resident of the Year Award and a Junior Achiever Award were introduced. The first Dayboro Resident of the Year was Marj Barnett and the Junior Achiever was Timothy Reid. In 2001 a Business of the Year Award was also introduced with the first award going to Gramma’s House.

Marj’s husband Verne received the Dayboro Resident of the Year Award in 1999. Between them they were involved with many organisations in Dayboro. It is only this month that Marj, at the age of 92, has sold the home in which she has lived for the past 42 years and has moved to Seasons at Mango Hill.

In 2023, the Dayboro Resident of the Year award was presented to Di Evans, the Junior Achiever was Rohan Sweeney and the Business of the Year Award was presented to Craig Doyle Real Estate.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

John Scott Park –SEEKING FEEDBACK

In response to multiple requests to Council to have a gate installed at John Scott Park on the entrance to the park facing Station Street, I am now seeking feedback from the broader community to ascertain the level of support or otherwise to this proposal. (Image indicates gate position)

Concerns have been raised in regard to the close proximity that this entrance has to the carpark and road (Station Street). Consideration needs to be given to the safety of children and families using the playground, the existing BBQ and seating area at this location, access to the playground for people with disabilities and parents with prams, the ongoing maintenance costs to Council to service the gate and any amenity impacts that a gate may have.

I am seeking your feedback regarding the proposal to have a gate installed at John Scott Park on the Station Street side only (noting all other access points to the playground will remain without a gate and fully accessible). If you would like to provide feedback, please email me at darren.grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au

LOCAL LAWS CONSULTATION (Round 8)

Public consultation has commenced for the proposed Signs Local Law and will go through to 25 June 2023. This is a topic that I regularly receive feedback on from residents. Issues such as signs blocking footpaths, signs on trees and fences or on the side of the road. What Council is trying to achieve with this latest consultation is making it easier for residents, businesses and community groups or clubs to understand how and where they can advertise events

or services, by creating two clear categories for signs that will be regulated under the Law. Self-assessable signs that won’t require formal approval provided that they meet minimum conditions; and licensable signs that will require formal approval. Signs play an important role in the region, they are a great way to get the word out, but we need to make sure they do not impact public or road safety or amenity. Go to yoursay. moretonbay.qld.gov.au and provide your feedback.

FINDING LIFE’S GOOD STUFF

We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t experience sadness and disappointment at some time in our lives. Admittedly, some people have more than their fair share of tragedy and grief, but life isn’t fair, is it? What do we do with the challenges life hurls at us? Here is one person’s journey.

When The Good Stuff Ideas Forum started at the SCHUB, the aspiration was to discuss positive concepts. The initiator of this had faced an unspeakable family tragedy. She said, ‘Good stuff happened before. Good stuff will happen again. The bad stuff is now woven into the tapestry of life. You don’t get closure. You don’t get over it. You cradle it gently and respectfully – not letting it define who you are.’

After the horror, she wasn’t the same as she had been before. As shock subsided, she questioned the values she had lived by all her life and was scared by the angry person she was becoming. Counselling, love and collaboration with family, along with incredible community support helped her get through, but something else began to emerge: she began to see that there is

beauty and hope in small moments. Over time, she gave herself permission to be open to love, growth and healing.

As leader of the discussion group, she helped the participants uncover new perspectives on ideas like friendship, honour, love, belonging and resilience, though sometimes less positive aspects have been revealed. The challenge has been how to find the “light” in the idea.

For example, while exploring Carpe Diem, the group knew the modern Hollywood interpretation of the phrase: ‘seize the day’. Australian philosopher Roman Krznaric points out that “Seizing” invokes images of people taking what they can get in an instant-gratification-obsessed consumer culture. However, the original meaning of Carpe Diem is to ‘pluck’ the day, like gathering flowers. In simple terms, it means to enjoy and make the most of each moment.

As the group dug deeper into the idea of Carpe Diem the ‘light’ or insight came from a cancer survivor. We should be aware of the uniqueness and beauty of every moment in life. Past and future are only relevant in how they relate to the present moment. What a privilege it was to sit around the table that day.

Through our discussions we have discovered each other’s stories and responded mostly with empathy. We are learning to see the world in a more positive

way through discussion and reading. If you would like to join us, The Good Stuff Ideas Forum takes place at the SCHUB from 3pm on the last Friday of each month.

Show time is fast approaching and exhibitors will be checking schedules against their growing gardens.

Gardening for food production has been a priority for residents of Samford and surrounding districts from the earliest days of settlement. Both Melva A Welch and Brian Hansford in their respective publications Bergin Beauty, pub 2014, and The Elusive Archibald Young, pub 2016, mention Samford Run homestead’s well stocked garden.

From stories recorded in Samford Reminiscences Vols 1-6 and unpublished and in newspaper articles (trove newspapers) of the 1920s & 30s we learn how important vegetable production was to the local economy. Several examples follow.

In 1913, George Brown was planting potatoes when the bush nurse delivered his wife a daughter; loadings at Samford (railway station) for Melbourne during August 1923, included 585 cases tomatoes, 191 cases beans, 3 cases peas, 2 cases squash, 2 cases marrows.

1930: A special line of peas arrived from the Samford district and being of a special

class in well-filled bags, brought 11/6d per bag.

1932: A shapely line of Carmens (potatoes) from Samford cleared at 5/7d.

In the 1930s, Sterns grew tomatoes and peas at Highvale. ‘Dad sat me in the shade under a tree and gave me a little bucket of peas to shell and eat while he worked. Mum used to pack the peas into sugar bags for market. One day she lost her wedding ring; it must have gone in a bag of peas. ...’

During the 1940s Philip (Binks) Walker and his family were small crop farming on part of Herron’s Closeburn property. Seeds and packaging costs recorded in Phillip’s diary notes - ¼ bushell of bean seeds 17/6d

(approx. 6.5 Kgs cost $1.75); 2 ½ ozs tomato seeds 8/3d - (almost 71gms cost 83cents). Packaging -2 dozen sugar bags 9/- (24 sugar bags cost 90c); 1 hank sewing twine 1/9d (a hank could be approx 25 metres long and cost 19c). Phillip took the vegetables to Closeburn Railway Station in a horse drawn cart to meet the goods train.

For more small crops stories please visit the Samford Museum Wednesday or Sunday 10am-4pm. Copies of all 6 Vols of Samford Reminiscences as well as Bergin Beauty and The Elusive Archibald Young are on sale at the museum. MORE PLANTING

Bushcare

On Sunday 7 May, a small contingent of very productive and enthusiastic volunteers (all members of Native Plants Qld) planted, mulched and watered around 100 trees and shrubs on the top of the riverbank along the Eco-Trail beyond the powerlines. We started work much earlier than usual to carry out some initial weeding of the area and ensure plants were laid out before the water tank arrived. Even a brief unexpected shower didn’t slow proceedings, with the last plant going in the ground just before 4pm, after which everyone enjoyed afternoon tea kindly provided by Karen Reid of the SDPPA.

There has been a longer than normal gap until the next working bee (because Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday), so on 11 June we will need many more hands on deck from 2pm to 4pm to ensure we stay on top of emerging weeds in the older

revegetation zones as well as around our young trees in the more recent riverbank plantings. New volunteers welcome, who will be briefed by a MBRC environmental officer on site.

Bird survey

During our latest monthly bird survey on 3 May, our birdwatchers recorded 60 species, which is impressive at this transitional time of year. Winter visitors included Spotted Pardalotes, two Rose Robins and numerous Grey Fantails (although a few of these would be resident). It is good to see the numbers of the woodland birds recovering 4 years after they were decimated in the summer of

2019/20 bushfires. Other highlights included seeing all three local finches feeding on grass seeds (Double-barred and Red-browed Finches and Chestnut-breasted Mannikin). Waterbirds were on the move with both Little Black and Little Pied Cormorants both flying over.

Albeit at late notice, the Library joined the Millen Farm weekend markets as part of the Samford Edible Garden Trail in May.

Saturday was a beautiful day and the markets were hugely busy. It was a lovely social day with lots of interest in the cookbooks, plants, home baking and the preserves. Sunday was a totally different story. The morning started with light winds increasing to wind gusts, with one especially sneaky wind gust clearing goods off several stall tables. Due to safety concerns, all the marquee vendors were shut down.

One lovely family took advantage of the shelter provided by the trailer to enjoy a picnic, while waiting for Costa to show up.

Thanks to the Library trailer, goods of

books, plants, cakes and preserves were all able to be easily protected from any effects of the windy day. The Library crew stayed until 2pm, when inbound visitors had mostly ceased.

All in all, the two days were a huge success for fundraising and the dollar target achieved. Many thanks to Millen Farm for the initiative in holding the markets for the first time. One suggestion was for the weekly Ferny Grove markets, which have been moved to Chermside since being removed from the Ferny Grove Train Station, be continued on the Samford Parklands site instead.

In other news, the Library trailer is away having the canopy cover fabricated. Completion date is expected to be mid-June.

In the meantime, Samford Area Mens Shed steelies have also designed the frame for the generator and fridge to sit on the

trailer A frame. Fabrication and fitting of the frame will take place on the trailer’s return. Although all the boxes of Keepers books are now in one place, shelving of the books is yet to take place in the containers, as some prior sorting is completed. A few more small steps forward for the Library.

TGIF

The Cedar Creek Public Hall has been a hive of activity over the past month! We were overjoyed with the offer from local resident and film Director Randall Wood to host the Flyways film at our May TGIF. The untold journey of the migratory shorebirds, a visually stunning and insightful film highlighting the importance of saving habitat to protect our wildlife from extinction. If you have not had the chance to see Flyways, we encourage you to attend a screening.

Winter has arrived at TGIF and we are warming the event up with our fabulous fire pits! Over the past 12 months we have seen many new faces attend Thank Goodness it’s Friday (TGIF) and lots of regulars returning and we want to thank everyone for joining in this monthly event.

The donated sweets have been a real delight and we have seen many people at TGIF pitch in with packing up at the end of the event and jumping on the BBQ to assist with cooking, as well as helping out in the kitchen. This shows a real community spirit and in the fast paced world we live in, a real treat to see everyone coming together. We hope to see you at our next event on 30th June.

FRIDAY AT THE SCHUB OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Winston Churchill once said, ‘A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty’.

Jenni Guse, one of our locals who seizes every opportunity offered, is leading a discussion in The Good Stuff Ideas Forum on OPPORTUNITY and how it influences our lives. Come along on June 30th at the SCHUB at 3.00pm ish. Jenni, who has been heavily involved in community activity since moving here many moons ago, is a linguist, sustainable farmer, writer, teacher, reader, accomplished musician, mother and wife. She has found, even in the most dreadful of life’s challenges, an incredibly positive outlook which she helps others to discover. Through an exploration of literature, poetry and experience, she enlivens these monthly discussions.

Crafting Kindness is on 9th June at 2.00pm. Mother and daughter team, Jean (95) and Lois (21 and some months) have been knitting madly to contribute to our next load of warm gear to go to Caboolture. Come along to knit, crochet and chat over a cuppa. Wool and needles provided. Giving to others is the greatest art there is.

Lottie Cole, extraordinary gardener and long-time volunteer, planting and weeding at the Eco-corridor, is going to take us on a gentle walk around the great work Peter Storer and his team have done to rehabilitate this lovely area on 16th June at 2.30pm. If you are into indigenous native plants or watching our incredible birdlife this is a must. Bring some food to share and a drink, your favourite closed gardening shoes and your broadbrim hat.

As winter descends, many of us who are north of a certain age, begin to have one or two twinges and creaks. On 23rd June starting at 3 ish, we will partake in a series of gentle movement activities, led by Robert, that will help our bodies cope.

Cub Scout Receives Highest Award

Samford Cub Scout Wyatt Crane has been awarded the coveted Grey Wolf Award, the highest award a Cub Scout can receive. To achieve his award, Wyatt had to complete a number of

achievement badges covering areas such as first aid, cooking, canoeing, community involvement, bushcraft and camping. Not all easy to do and it required a lot of dedication.

Samford Scout Group Leader David Reed said, “Wyatt has excelled within the Cub Scout program and shown to be everything that we admire in a Cub Scout. Always enjoying adventure, Wyatt never gives up and is always a willing participant in every activity.”

“He is very active also and can do anything he puts his mind to. I am looking forward to seeing where his journey takes his as he moves up to the Scout Unit.”

Wyatt received his Grey Wolf Award at a recent ceremony at Samford Scout Den, during which he reaffirmed his Cub Scout Promise and got to share with his fellow Cub Scouts the largest celebration cake he has ever eaten.

Also occurring on the same night was the Samford Scout Annual Report Presentation which covered the many activities run throughout the year. With over 200 members and parents linked to the Scout Group, there is always strong interest in having young people enjoy adventure and get skills for life.

If you are interest in your child joining Scouts and making new friends, contact David Reed at the Samford Scout Group on 3040 6400 or via www.samfordscouts. com.au.

Our Ladies ‘President at Home’ day held on Monday 29th May was a great success. Ladies President Lesley (not a person to look for attention) was bowled over with the support she received to hold this important day. There is always a solid amount of work before the day to make sure everything runs smoothly and Lesley is just the person to oversee that it all happens. Her quiet but calm disposition keeps everyone on the same page.

Teams came from Windsor, Chermside, Red Hill, Aspley, Northern Suburbs, Everton Park, Ferny Grove and a team representing the Brisbane District Bowls Association. Five teams from Samford completed the teams. The club house sparkled with the red and white table theme and the multi colours of the many different uniforms and bowls on the greens added to this great day of bowling, made even better with the superb autumn weather. Our thanks to Belle Property for sponsoring this important day and the club volunteers for their support.

Mac Patterson Shield second round was played at Woodford Bowls Club on May

25th. Dayboro bowlers won on the day with Samford a close second. The next round will be played at Kilcoy on June 22nd. These games are always hotly contested but in the friendliest way and to be chosen to play for your club is highly sort after.

The Pennant Season will soon be here. The forms are up on the board and selectors are checking out the names that are going on the lists. Our men and ladies will be entering teams for mid-week (ladies) and Saturday competitions.

Our first Rapid Fire Pairs afternoon for 2023 was played on Saturday 3rd June. A BBQ started the afternoon before some hotly contested competition. Great prizes for the winners (and the not quite winners) and a bigger than usual raffle completed a pleasurable afternoon of bowls.

Sunday 11th June. Golden Valley Mixed 4 Medley. This day of bowls will bring out the competitiveness in all that play. Why? They are playing for MONEY!

Club competitions are played each week with Pam Campbell defeating Jeff Himstedt in round one of Open Singles. Jeff played some superb bowls, but Pam was on fire, able to weave her way into the jack to win more ends and the higher score.

COASTAL ROSEMARY

Coastal rosemary (Westringia fructicosa), as its name suggests, is naturally found in coastal regions. It is endemic to NSW but has become naturalised in Queensland where it grows on sand dunes, cliff faces and in the heavier shale-enriched soils of dune forests and woodlands. It also has a similar appearance, although the leaves do not have a strong aroma, to true rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) to which it is closely related.

Westringia fructiosa have small, simple leaves that form a whorl around the stem. They are hairy, giving them an attractive silvery sheen, and blue-green to grey-green in colour. The solitary flowers have five petals of varying size, fused at their base, and are heavily clustered in the leaf axils. The colour of the flowers ranges from pale mauve to white with orange to purple spots in the throat of the petals. Native and exotic

bees as well as butterflies, other insects and small birds are attracted to the flowers which, in warm regions, flower throughout the year.

Although less flamboyant than bottlebrush, grevillea and banksia, Coastal Rosemary is a versatile plant that can be used as a formal hedge or topiary, a path border, an ornamental shrub, an expansive ground cover or in box gardens or containers. It will retain a healthy, bushy appearance for many years but benefits from regular tip pruning. In garden conditions it can reach a height of 2m and width of 1.5m but can be pruned to the required size. It

will grow in a range of soils as long as they are well drained and in full sun. Since they will survive on steep northern and western sites, they provide a useful buffer for more tender plants in exposed regions. Once established, these plants tolerate drought, heat, humidity, wind, cold and slight frost. Pests and diseases never seem to trouble this species.

There are a number of different cultivars and hybrids of the 25 different species of Westringia endemic to Australia. ‘Zena’ and ‘Blue Gem’ are low-growing forms about a 1m tall whilst ‘Wynyabbie Gem’ is a medium shrub that makes a good screening plant.

FEMALE FOOTBALL WEEK

Samford Rangers FC recently participated in Female Football Week, which is a celebration of Australian women’s football. This year’s theme is #LoveOurGame, encouraging all participants (players, coaches, and officials) to embrace their love for the world game and its positive impacts.

Rangers hosted a mid-week training session for our female players of all ages, including skills exercises, game-based trainin, and fun games, led by our team of senior players and coaches. More than 90 of our female players took part, and the evening concluded with a sausage sizzle for all players and families.

Rangers are proud of the growing level of female participation across all levels of the club, from our Miniroos players (starting at 3-years) to our currently undefeated senior women’s team, with a former Matilda as captain and mentor. We are fortunate to also have a strong female presence on our committee and in many important roles within the club.

A few years ago, the club set itself a target of having at least one all girls team in every age group of Miniroos and Juniors, and a clear pathway into both social and competitive senior female football. Whilst not quite there yet, we are very close, and will continue to invest to grow our female participation. Female football at Rangers is led by a dedicated Director of Female Football, a Women’s and Girls Ambassador, a Female Development Officer and a strong support group of coaches, team managers and club volunteers and staff.

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup just around the corner, there’s no better time to harness the power of football to build an inclusive and diverse game that embraces and elevates women and girls and supports them to own and drive the future

of women’s football.

Rangers is actively engaged with local schools and will be hosting ‘come and try days’ towards the end of the year to give girls (and boys) the opportunity to come down and have a kick! If you are keen to get involved, please send an email to dofw@ samfordrangers.org.au

THE VILLAGE PUMP 09 JUNE 2023– Page 23
OUT & ABOUT

One of the unique features of Samford Valley Steiner School, and the Steiner pedagogy in general, is its focus on practical, project-based learning. If students are doing, they are more engaged, more responsible for their outcomes and are working in the collaborative manner which the 21st Century world demands of our alumni today. We are always looking for practical ways to teach our subjects and support our students learning, beyond the abstract theory they meet in the classroom. This can sometimes be an extremely difficult task, especially in such topics as mathematics, which are inherently abstract concepts at the more advanced levels.

This year, our Class 10 students have studied their Ancient Cultures and Surveying Main Lessons in a combined opportunity to fuse the subjects of history and mathematics into a practical and tangible experience. This is a great example of holistic education and demonstrates how we need not always compartmentalise learning into neat boxes.

The students began their experience in the classroom, learning some archaeological principles, discovering the timeline of the Earth and, more pertinently, the evolution of our ancestors to where we are today. We investigated early technology, how different cultures around the world were shaped by their environment, the Neolithic Revolution and of course discussed the concept of Civilisation and how one could separate the concepts of civilisation and culture, if indeed one ever can. We are so fortunate to live in a country with one of the oldest, still living, indigenous cultures in the world, and a lot of time was spent learning about the Yolngu people of North Arnhem Land and

comparing and contrasting their beliefs and living practices to those of other cultures including modern western culture.

After this very cerebral introduction, we changed tack and went on camp. We were hosted by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in their Samford Ecological Research Facility (SERF) in Camp Mountain. You do not have to go far to have a rich experience, and the students spent two weeks here on a residential camp, mapping a parcel of QUT land to support their tertiary research.

During this work we inquired: How did people manage before maps? How were great ancient structures built? What surveying and measuring techniques were possible throughout history?

We learned more about the technology of the Ancient Babylonians who created the 360-degree circle and how this described and influenced our current measurement of time, time zones and the coordinates system of latitude and longitude. The students witnessed shadow sticks, a working southern-hemisphere astrolabe (an instrument thought to have been developed around 250 BCE) and measured the angle of true north from the sun using theodolite projection techniques.

Many of the students dubbed this ‘math camp’ as they learned to use optical

theodolites to identify accurate grid points in the area, and then used tacheometry techniques to pinpoint features onto their map. Angles were measured to an accuracy of 4 decimal places, work was checked, and errors investigated.

This learning experience moved forward, including a short camp to Girraween, learning off-track navigation and the reading of topographic maps. At QUT they were observing the land and taking abstract mathematical data from it. Then in the bush, they had to use a 2D diagrammatic representation of the world to inform their 3D perspective, identifying the features in front of them to decide which way to go. We then returned to the school where the students returned to the data they took from their time at SERF, and each created their own map of the space surveyed. The concept of mapping, laying grids and reading angles… all the trigonometry… it suddenly falls into place as a northreferenced, professional map springs off the page in front of them.

When complete, a final copy (physical and digital) of the map will be presented to QUT for use with their tertiary students’ research into the fauna occupation of dead standing trees in remnant forest. This has been a wonderful, holistic and fulfilling experience for the students, enabling them to engage in practical, real word experiences that support their curriculum learning and the staff involved all feel honoured to have been a part of it.

We are very grateful to the staff and institution of QUT, especially Marcus Yates and Lorelle Graham who manage the facility, and to Dr David Tucker, landscape ecologist, who took time out of his schedule to share his work with the students and who will ultimately be using the map they produce.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

PINE RIVERS UPDATE

Queensland Day Awards

June 6 is Queensland Day, and to celebrate I held the first annual Pine Rivers Queensland Day Awards. These awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the many great Pine Rivers individuals and organisations who go above and beyond. Any individual or organisation in the Pine Rivers community could be nominated to recognise the above and beyond work they do for the community. Winners in our Samford, Highvale, Dayboro and surrounding suburbs included:

• Sergeant Ken Robinson – Dayboro Police Station

• QAS Dayboro First Responder Group

• Samford Scout Group (pictured)

• John Blake

If you have any individuals or organisations who make our community extra special, please nominate them in 2023.

Cost of Living Survey

I know a lot of people in Pine Rivers are struggling with the rising cost of living right now. High inflation and interest rates mean a lot of locals are doing it tough. For some families, difficult budget decisions

are needing to be made. I’ve set up a survey to hear from you firsthand on the effects of the rising cost of living and to make sure our community’s voice is heard. The results of this will help me lobby on behalf of locals. You can find the survey at: https://nikkiboyd.com.au/campaigns/ cost-of-living-survey/ Vaping

Survey

The Palaszczuk Government has launched a parliamentary inquiry into the availability and prevalence of vaping, with a focus on younger Queenslanders, and the health risks associated with e-cigarettes. This parliamentary inquiry will help the Government chart a path forward to address this important health issue. I’m keen on hearing from the community on their concerns on vaping. That’s why I have set up a survey to hear all feedback on the matter. https://nikkiboyd.com.au/ campaigns/vaping-inquiry/

A link to both surveys can also be found on my Facebook Page: @NikkiforPineRivers

WHICH BODY ODOUR DO MOSQUITOES PREFER?

Ever wonder why you and your distant cousin are targets for mosquitoes while the rest of your family seem largely immune? It may partly come down to what you ate for dinner.

A recent study published in Current Biology found that mosquitoes appear to prefer certain body scents over others, which can be affected by diet.

People whose body odours contained more carboxylic acids and lower levels of eucalyptol were deemed the tastiest targets for mosquitoes. Eucalyptol is a chemical that is likely derived from plant-based foods and flavourings in a person’s diet. Those with high eucalyptol levels were the least preferred human subjects in the six-person cohort, meaning if you ate a garden salad for dinner you may be less likely to be mosquito fodder than someone who ate a rib eye steak.

To achieve these findings, researchers trekked to Zambia where they built a 20m square flight cage in which they released 200 hungry mosquitoes and tracked their activity using infrared motion cameras.

Humans were typically hunted between 10pm and 2am, which is worth keeping in mind when you zip up your tent on your next camping trip. Researchers were surprised by the effectiveness of mosquitoes in locating and choosing their human meals within the large experiment space.

Sport Club Power Bills

We’re giving our local sporting clubs a $650 energy rebate! This $650 rebate is part of the Energy Bill Relief Fund, jointly funded by the Albanese and Palaszczuk Governments and will be automatically applied to your club’s electricity bill starting July 1st! Eligible clubs must consume less than 100MWh of electricity per year and must be on a separately metered business tariff.

Next edition I look forward to providing our 2023 budget announcements.

Previous research found that mosquitoes identify targets using visual cues as well as body emitted heat, carbon dioxide, odour and moisture. There were different spatial ranges for each cue; warmth reached up to 50cm while visual cues could be perceived up to 15m. Mosquitoes could zone in on carbon dioxide and body odour as far as 60m.

Samford Area Mens Shed

There is that old saying that “time flies when you’re having fun”. So often when we’re doing something that we really enjoy, we wonder afterwards at how quickly the experience is over and we’re just left with the memories – or photographs. Contrast that with the phenomenon of time dragging on when we’re engaging in onerous tasks or duties that must be done rather than done for pleasure.

For the men at the Samford Area Mens Shed (aka: SAMS) the experience of time going so quickly comes to mind when they realise that it’s the middle of June already! So much has happened since the beginning of the year – a new Chairman and Executive Committee elected at the AGM, a change of coordinators, some men leaving SAMS to go into new adventures and new members joining SAMS. Although the time seems short, it has also been exciting as well. With new changes come new challenges and opportunities to explore new ideas and ways of doing things.

One of the objectives at SAMS is to offer a range of activities that will develop men’s

hobbies, pastimes and interests. To achieve this, the Woodies and Steelies are embarking on a range of skills development initiatives. Activities are designed to help the men gain new skills or improve existing skills and to add fulfillment to their shed experience. Pre-existing knowledge is not required, just an enquiring mind and a desire to learn.

Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along to the SAMS Shed on any

Tuesday morning at 9am and see what SAMS is all about. Look for the shed at the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale - just near the high voltage power tower. Want to know more? Visit the SAMS website at samfordshed.org.au or email samssecretary1@gmail.com

How Can Exercise and Fitness Impact Mental Health?

The 3144 push-ups in 23 days Challenge is a great opportunity to support an important cause. Did you know that we lose more than six men to suicide in Australia every day? The benefit of challenges such as this is the awareness and connection it creates.

As a personal trainer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible impact that fitness and exercise can have on not just our physical health, but also our mental wellbeing. It’s not just about building muscles and losing weight; it’s about finding inner strength, improving self-confidence, and even preventing the unthinkable. There is undoubtedly a profound connection between fitness, exercise and mental health, and its role in suicide prevention.

It may seem unachievable, but as with any new goal, the secret is breaking it up into bite-sized actions that move us toward our goal. 3144 push-ups in 23 days means an average of 137 push-ups a day or 15 pushups at hourly intervals throughout the day. Although the challenge has already started, we can use it as inspiration to keep the

conversation going through all of June. Scan the QR code to download our 3144 Push Ups in 23 Days Challenge Tracker so you can track your progress by crossing off each completed set.

The Science Behind the Connection

When we engage in physical activity, our brain releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, our “feel-good” chemicals. These neurotransmitters help reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and promote feelings of happiness and relaxation. Regular exercise also improves blood flow to the brain, enhancing cognitive function and overall mental well-being.

Stress Relief and Emotional Resilience

Whether it’s a high-intensity workout or a calming yoga session, physical activity helps us channel our emotions, release tension, and clear our minds. It boosts our

emotional resilience, allowing us to cope better with daily challenges and bounce back from setbacks.

Boosting Self-Confidence and Empowerment

As we set and achieve fitness goals, we witness our bodies and minds transform, instilling a deep sense of empowerment and self-belief. Feeling strong and capable, we become more resilient against negative thoughts and better equipped to overcome difficult times.

Fitness and exercise are powerful tools that positively impact both our physical and mental well-being. So - lace up those sneakers, find an activity you enjoy and let fitness guide you towards a healthier mind, body and soul.

Understanding Sugar.

Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for your body and brain. But as the saying goes: too much of a good thing can be harmful. It’s scientifically proven that a diet high in sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.

How Does Sugar A ect Your Teeth?

Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums.

Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out:

Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings –anything high in fructose.

What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health?

- Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste

- Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth

- Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean

- Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment

The Bottom Line

Healthy gut = healthy mouth. Say YES to a diet rich in..

- Plants and vegetables.

- Lean meats (limit red & processed meats)

- Unsaturated fats

- Vegetable oils

- Nuts

- Full fat fairy products

- Consume water after every meal to help wash away lingering food

Say NO to diets that are high in fructose and refined sugars and low in fibre.

A MOLECULE AWAY FROM MADNESS: Tales of A Hijacked

Brain. Sarah Manning Peskin

Do you enjoy true mysteries?

Immerse yourself in this amazing book where researchers struggle to unravel why brain illness occurs. Dr Sarah Peskin, Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, gives readers a glimpse into the complexity of medical science as she reveals how many brain illnesses are related to three causes of molecular decline: DNA mutations, rogue proteins, and ingested invaders.

DNA mutations such as those causing Huntington’s Disease are a change in the DNA sequence of an organism. A breakthrough came when the exact nucleotide sequence of Huntington’s was identified by a Huntington’s sufferer and scientist Nancy Wexler, leading to a drug that in trials proved 85% successful in

short-circuiting the mechanisms setting Huntington’s in motion.

Rogue proteins that attack brain cells causing cognitive malfunction posed another mystery for determined medical scientists. A bright student suddenly lost her sense of time, descending into a fantasy world of the walking dead because the protein molecules created by her body to protect against infection went berserk.

The invaders, “environmental toxins, illicit drugs, and pharmaceuticals that are not normally part of the human body”, can cause immense brain function disruption. Perskin speculates that Abraham Lincoln’s unpredictable behaviour before his election to presidency was related to his ingestion of “blue mass” prescribed for his bowel problems. The medication would fail the guidelines of the Office of Drug Control today.

Through this book, the reader, whether layman or expert, steps into the complex world of medical research, where sometimes great leaps forward are assigned to the wrong scientist, where scientists work tirelessly together often for little reward, building on each other’s discoveries, always questioning. This is a wonderful work — a must read for the curious.

POTATOES AND OTHER CRITERIA: A MEMOIR OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND RECOVERY. Kim E Garthwaite

Who would believe the ability to peel potatoes was a criterion for judging sanity? Throughout this hard-hitting, very personal and sometimes funny memoir, Kim E Garthwaite, a registered nurse, uses the many incarnations of a potato as a metaphor for her state of health during her eightyear struggle with mental illness. Her style reflects the sharp insightful wit of Kathy Lette or Liane Moriarty.

Kim had her normal brain function hijacked after the birth of her second child when the post-traumatic effects of her childhood abuse swamped her. Her memoir is unputdownable, fascinating, shocking in its descriptions of the many therapies and treatments she endured, learned from and challenged, as she battled to survive. At each stage of her journey, she augments her story with excerpts from the clinical notes made by her nurses, counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists. Her commentary, hilarious at times, gives a patient’s view, overlaid with her own medical knowledge, of the complexities of mental health treatments. The book haunts me, even though it is filled with hope.

Kim is now a clinical nutritionist, yoga teacher, speaker for Beyond Blue and founder of Don’t Ever Think All Is Lost (DETAIL)® a support for those with an experience of anxiety and depression. She has found a way out of the black maze of despair through her persistent, analytical searches: a holistic balance of traditional medical therapies, other disciplines, connection and service to others which sustains her mental health. Through open discussion of mental health conditions, we, as a society, can overcome the associated societal stigma. This is one of the most powerful and haunting memoirs I have ever read. I highly recommend it.

THE CROSSING Sophie Matterson

Early last year, we published an article about Sophie Matterson and her 5000km trek across Australia, from West Coast to East Coast, with 5 camels which she caught and trained from the wild.

Sophie has published a memoir about her journey, which is out now. This is an epic story of leaving everything behind to find purpose, adventure and love. Sophie, a former Samford Steiner School pupil and one time member of Samford Golden Valley Pony Club, trained as a photographer and film maker. She spent four years learning all about camels both in Australia and overseas, before deciding to embark on her adventure.

Sophie trained her camels, Jude, Delilah, Clayton, Charlie and Mac, while working at Uluru Camel Tours. She also made her own camel saddles in the workshop. In March

2020, Sophie trucked the camels from Uluru to Shark Bay in Western Australia - in itself a 5-day adventure, before setting off on her trek, just as covid had begun to take hold.

The most challenging section of the trek was the 1,400 kms from Laverton to Coober Pedy, following the Anne Beadell Highway which is nothing more than a grader track through the Great Victoria Desert. With only one roadhouse along the track and up to 20 days walk between water points, she arrived at Mount Clarence Station north of Coober Pedy in October 2020.

Sophie decided to split the trek into two halves, resting the camels over the summer months when it is too hot to walk through Central Australia. The camels were trucked to Beltana Station in the Flinders Ranges for summer agistment, and then returned to Mount Clarence in May 2021 having gained condition from rest and good feed.

Her thirteen-month solo crossing was the ultimate test of resilience and selfsufficiency – with each State in various forms of lockdown, Sophie would often walk for weeks without seeing another soul. She crossed harsh, remote deserts, navigated treacherously beautiful salt lakes, and visited country towns and isolated cattle

stations.

Along the way she survived life-and-death situations, fell in love in the middle of the Outback, and slowly began to trust herself and her own abilities.

LIGHTING FIRES IN QUEENSLAND

As a landholder in Queensland, you are ultimately responsible for managing fire on your property. The following advice is for persons planning to burn vegetation or use fire on the property.

REMEMBER:

Your fire – Your responsibility! Do you need a Permit to Light Fire?

A Permit to light fire (permit) is required for most fires and must be obtained from your local Fire Warden. There are significant liabilities for failing to obtain a permit or failing to comply with permit conditions.

The aim of a permit is to ensure your fire will be managed safely and may include certain conditions on how the fire is lit and maintained. It also informs fire services on when and where you intend to burn ensuring that adequate measures are in place so that fires remain under control.

A permit application can be made through your local Fire Warden by using an application form, available from your

Fire Warden or the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) website.

Before applying for a permit, you need to make reasonable attempts to contact your neighbours and inform them of your intent to apply, allowing a reasonable timeframe for your neighbours to contact the Fire Warden to lodge an objection, or to assist with a more coordinated property burn.

On receipt of your application, the Fire Warden will assess the intended burn and if a permit is issued, impose a range of conditions to reduce risk or nuisance to people, property, and the environment. The Fire Warden can also refuse an application if they believe that appropriate safety measures cannot be reasonably achieved, or if neighbours have not been given enough time to raise any concerns about the intended fire.

Fire can be a useful tool for managing weeds, pastures and reducing bushfire risk. Fire can also be used for ecological outcomes such as the regeneration of some plant species or the improvement of habitat for wildlife. However, if used inappropriately, fire can endanger lives, properties and the environment.

Note: Smoke from your fire can negatively impact on your community and neighbours and can contribute to local and regional air pollution issues. Many Local Government Authorities have local laws in place that restrict or prohibit the lighting of fires in part or all the local government area. Always check with your local Council if you can use fire on your property.

DICKSON NOTES

On Thursday 11 May, I delivered my second Budget in Reply speech in Canberra, where I laid out my plan for a stronger economy and a stronger Australia and easing the cost-of-living crisis on struggling Australian families and small businesses. As Leader of the Liberal Party, I will work hard to hold the Government to account and to ensure the interests of our community and every day Australians are put first and foremost.

Vale Dr Sam Ginsberg

I was saddened to hear of the passing of WWII veteran and well-respected Samford RSL sub-branch member, Dr Sam Ginsberg. I recently caught up with Dr Ginsberg and his amazing daughters at an ANZAC Day Service in Samford which he led. I send my sincerest condolences to Dr Ginsberg’s

family and to the Samford RSL Sub-Branch. Dr Ginsberg’s legacy will live on through the many important stories he shared.

King Charles III

On Saturday 6 May, King Charles III and Queen Camilla were crowned. The ceremony brought together thousands of dignitaries from all over the Commonwealth and the world to witness the historic event in London. Many millions tuned in to witness history in the making.

The Monarchy has a long history in Australia. It serves as a unifying symbol of stability and tradition and will continue to hold an important place in the hearts of many Australians for many years to come.
