CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS

Running isn’t just a lunchtime activity for Samford State School students Flynn Banner and Lucy Frawley, both of whom placed at the North West District Cross Country event after winning their age races at school. At District level, Flynn won his event while

Lucy walked away with second place.

“I felt very proud because I’ve always placed well but haven’t come first before. I was also very happy with (the Regionals) result because the competition was very tough,” Flynn said.

Lucy was similarly thrilled with her efforts. “I am honestly just really amazed and happy because I didn’t know I was able to even achieve what I did. I am extremely grateful because I was never aiming for a top ten place let alone second place and getting the chance to go to Regionals for the first time,” she said.

Both students subsequently ran their hardest at Regionals with Flynn placing 11th and Lucy crossing the line 21st in this high-level competition.

To reach this level of endurance, both Flynn and Lucy dedicated many hours to training. Lucy ran twice a week in the lead up to cross country, splitting her time between intervals and distance, as well as participating in Saturday Parkruns.

Flynn can often be seen on local streets, training five days a week with the Be Energetic Tri and Run Club. He also entered extra running competitions during cross country and track season.

“The tri group is mainly high school kids and most are national athletes. This pushes me to train hard and become a better athlete myself,” Flynn said.

Running isn’t the only sport Flynn and Lucy focus on, with both students involved in an array of other activities. Lucy can be found at the netball courts and swimming pool as well as running around her street.

“I love being active and I enjoy the feeling of getting better at everything I do. Doing sport makes me feel really happy because I love challenging myself physically and there is nothing I’d rather be doing in my afternoon,” she said.

Flynn’s main sport is triathlon which he trains for throughout the year, but he also competes in swimming and track and field.

“I have made it to States for Aquathon (swim, run) twice and am the state Duathlon Champion (cycle, run). I love getting outside and have made lots of friends because of my sport,” he said.

While both Flynn and Lucy have a phenomenal drive to be the fastest runners they can be, there are other reasons they love lacing up their running shoes.

“I enjoy long runs in the Samford forest or when we’re on holidays. I love the feeling of knowing I’ve done a good job and tried something hard. I also like competing and having days out with all my friends,” Flynn said.

For Lucy, running gives her space in life to enjoy, “the feeling of freedom and the time to think.”

Congratulations Flynn and Lucy and we can’t wait to see how far running takes you both.

VALE: ROBERT PERCY

It is with great sadness that we learned that Robert Percy, one of our long-term members, passed away during the last week of June. Robert was involved in the nursery industry for well over 40 years and had an unsurpassed passion for plants. He was co-owner with his brother of Aspley Wholesale Nurseries based in Burpengary and Morayfield until his recent retirement. Our Branch was lucky enough to get a personal guided tour of the impressive facilities in 2021.

Robert will be remembered for his major contribution to growing plants for largescale landscape designs in Australia and overseas. He was heavily involved in the success of Brisbane Expo 88 in what is now the Southbank Parklands. He also supplied many of the mature native trees for the Samford Avenue of Honour. He won the prestigious Queensland Nurseryman of the

year in 2013. Robert was a key figure in the International Plant Propagator’s Society and was always keen to develop new propagation techniques for difficult species. Samford Branch appreciated his plant and propagation knowledge and the enthusiasm with which he shared it. He was a very generous man, always quick to offer help to a friend in need. Robert will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Scouts Build Samford Bridge

Samford Scouts and Wahminda Park Scouts recently held a joint Samford outdoor skills camp which featured pioneering and construction skills.

Pioneering is the art of using ropes and wooden spars joined by lashings and knots to build structures that are used in a wide range of Scouting and camping activities. The name comes from the 18th and 19th Century military engineers who went ahead of an army to “pioneer” a route, which could involve building bridges and towers with rope and timber (for example the Royal Pioneer Corps).

Pioneering skills include knot tying (tying ropes together), lashing (tying spars together with rope), whipping (binding the end of a rope with thin twine), splicing (joining or binding the end of a rope using its own fibres), problem solving, team building and skills related to the use, care and storage of ropes, spars and related pioneering equipment.

This is just one of the outdoor skills taught to Scouts throughout the year and is used for constructing small items such as camp gadgets like tables, up to larger structures such as gateways, bridges and towers.

The final project of the weekend was constructing a pedestrian bridge and having completed this, the Scouts are ready to tackle any project! If you wish to learn more about Scout pioneering skills for young people aged 5-15 years, contact www.samfordscouts.com.au.

CAFÉ LAGARTO LIVE MUSIC EVERY WEEKEND

There’s lots happening at Café Lagarto this month. As well as their regular daily breakfast, brunch and lunch meals on offer, the café hosts very popular monthly 3-course dinner events featuring cuisines from around the world on the second Friday of every month.

On Friday 14th July, why not imagine yourself dining on the Champs-Elysees for a night, by celebrating Bastille Day with their specially created menu. Book now so you don’t miss out.

Live music on Sunday this month features Old Semeil on Sunday 16th July. Old Semeil (Gav) is a singer-songwriter from Mt Glorious. He’s been making music for the last 10 years as both singer/guitarist of West End rabble-rousers ‘The Mouldy Lovers’

and as leader of the alt-folk collective ‘Old Semeil’.

On Sunday 23rd July, be entertained over lunch listening to Danny Mose and Friends. Danny learnt to sing formally with the church choir and is self-taught, bringing a smooth and soulful style to your lunch experience. Both performances commence at 10am – 1pm and all you need to do is book a table for lunch. No cover charge applies.

If you’re into Jazz, don’t forget to book for dinner on the last Saturday of every month for Saturday Night Jazz - three hours of live jazz music featuring professional musicians, many who are local and with many years of experience. You can grab a special cocktail, a wine, beer or cider and your choice of 4 gourmet platters to pre-order. The café has already featured a great line-up of musicians this year with many more to come. All Saturday Night Jazz performances are either a trio or a quartet – they choose who to jam with on the night.

On Saturday 29th July, don’t miss Gemini Blue’s repertoire of popular R&B songs of the 70’s and 80’s, easy listening jazz and blues favourites. The band’s intimate and diverse style has been enjoyed by Brisbane audiences for about two decades.

Young Entrepreneurs

If you’ve recently called out a plumber or attended a local yoga class, you may have noticed that Samford is home to a range of young entrepreneurs who have taken a chance on themselves and their ideas to start their own business. Over the next few weeks, we’re taking the opportunity to find out how some of our young locals are forging their own way in and around the Valley.

Rachel James | Grounded Wellness Company

the last seven years and the opportunity came up for me to jump both feet into my own business and I decided to take it,” Rachel said.

“The timing felt right for me to begin to practice in a way that aligned with who I was as a person and to create a business around my values. It feels great working for myself and building something that I am putting my heart and soul into.”

Rachel’s clients often tell her they feel like they’re floating out of the room after one of her sessions, and even find her deep tissue techniques relaxing.

“I am so grateful and fortunate for the clients who come to see me. They are so supportive and so far they have said that they love the clinic space I have created. They have shared with me that they think I look very happy and they enjoy seeing me grow,” Rachel said.

Once Rachel completes her degree, Grounded Wellness Co will also offer acupuncture services as well as massage therapy.

More information on Grounded Wellness Company can be found at: groundedwellnessco.com

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB KEEPING WARM

Combing years of practical experience in massage therapy with further study, Rachel James took the chance to branch out on her own, starting Grounded Wellness Company within the Samford Chiropractic Centre. Using various techniques to help patients, Rachel takes a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, addressing various contributing factors to a person’s pain.

Prior to opening Grounded Wellness Company, Rachel worked in the massage therapy industry for seven years, where she learned as much as she could from other workplaces and their owners. During that time she also studied multiple courses and is currently working towards a Bachelor of Health Science Degree in Acupuncture.

“I decided to start my own business as I had accumulated a lot of knowledge over

“I am very content with how Grounded Wellness Co. is growing, and I intend to continue practicing where I am. For the distant future, I plan to complete a few other courses in order to continue to expand my knowledge and to be able to provide a wider range of services,” Rachel said.

For anyone else feeling inspired to take a chance on their own business, Rachel only has words of support.

“I would love to encourage anyone who is thinking of taking the leap into business ownership to do it! It is very important to have a great support network around you who you can lean on and a belief in yourself; it is through trying that we learn what we want or don’t want. As long as you stay true to yourself, you will create something beautiful for yourself and others and that is what we need more of in the world.”

A huge thank you to the nimble-fingered knitters and crocheters of the SCHUB’s Crafting Kindness group and the lovely ladies of Lions Charity Craft Creators who together filled three large boxes and four bags with good quality warm clothes, scarves, beanies, wraps, blankets, pyjamas and handwarmers which were delivered to Caboolture Community Care in Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre recently. The demand for warm things has escalated due to the increasing number of displaced folk in our region. The contributions from Samford are greatly appreciated.

On Friday 14 July, Crafting Kindness is meeting again at the SCHUB if you would like to join us. Our object is to create warm things and other necessities for living in tents and cars.

On 21st July, we are exercising our brains with entertaining puzzles. Very small prizes will be given for those who can solve them.

On 28th July, Jenni will lead our discussion at the Good Stuff Ideas Forum.

At each Friday gathering starting at 2.00pm for a cuppa and a chat, with activities starting at 3pm, we ask for a $2.00 donation which covers afternoon tea and rental. All welcome.

Samford Village Vets Animal Hospital: A Journey of Passion and Compassionate Care

The story of Samford Village Vets Animal Hospital begins in 2003, when two veterinary students, Erin and Daniel, embarked on a friendship that grew into love. Their shared sense of humour and passion for animals laid the foundation for their veterinary careers and a commitment to providing exceptional care.

After graduating, Erin and Daniel began their veterinary journey at Samford, working under the mentorship of the esteemed veterinarian Brian Sheehan. Erin’s path led her to specialise in small animals, particularly in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, with a focus on cruciate ligament repair. Meanwhile, Daniel developed a keen interest in small animal internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and emergency care, honing skills in diagnosing complex cases and managing highly anxious clients.

Based on their diverse experiences in both private practice and large corporate vet settings, the duo formed a philosophy centred on integrity and compassion. Their mission is to provide judgment-free and personalised veterinary care, offering a range of options tailored to each patient’s specific needs. They emphasise preventative care, including tick and flea prevention, heartworm management, vaccinations and regular diagnostics, to ensure the well-being of pets throughout their lives.

As a startup business, Samford Village Vets Animal Hospital focuses on treating small animals but remains open to expanding their services based on demand and available resources. While they don’t provide afterhours care, they accept emergencies during their weekday and Saturday opening hours. The team aims to foster a strong bond with both pets and their owners, reuniting families with their beloved companions after illness or injury. Their commitment to kindness, compassion and integrity, aims to rejuvenate the veterinary industry by providing exceptional service to the Samford community.

Samford Village Vets Animal Hospital is poised to become a trusted destination for pet owners in the Samford area, offering top-notch veterinary care, specialising in surgery, internal medicine, diagnostics, and emergency services - all delivered with a heartfelt dedication to the well-being of pets and their families. Located in Station Street, you can book now on 3521 3422.

Government Impersonation Scams

Be wary of calls, emails or SMS claiming to be from an Australian government agency that asks you to urgently update personal information, claim a refund or make a payment. This could be a scam.

Government impersonation scams are increasingly common, and can be delivered by phone, email or SMS. Callers may threaten to cancel your services or detain you if you don’t make payments or provide personal details.

Emails and SMS might ask you to click on links to receive a refund, submit tax information or view correspondence. These scams can appear trustworthy, with government logos and genuine contact details to trick you into believing they are real.

Common impersonations include MyGov, the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the Department of Home Affairs, or the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

If you receive a call or message claiming to be from the Australian government requesting personal information, offering a refund or asking you to make an urgent payment, visit their website or contact them on their publicly listed number to validate the request.

• Do not rely on the contact information provided by callers or in emails and SMS.

• Do not provide your personal information or make payments to callers over the phone.

• Do not click on any links in emails or SMS. These may be phishing scams designed to steal your personal or financial details.

Scammers target everyone. We encourage Australians to discuss how to identify scams with friends and family. Learn more about how to protect yourself and those close to you on the ACMA website and make a report to Scamwatch. If you’re concerned that your identity has been compromised or you’ve been a victim of a scam, contact your bank immediately and call IDCARE on 1800 595 160.

REMEMBERING KEVIN HICKEY

Special event days held at the Samford Museum like Australia Day, feature some aspects of our local history. For several years prior to 2010, a crowd favourite was the construction of a panel of post and rail fencing by Museum members, which was auctioned on completion. None other than member Kevin Hickey was able to excite the crowd into spirited bidding before ‘knocking it down’ at a good price to the highest bidder.

Kevin also used his auctioneering talents at the ‘Young for Old’ evenings prior to 2008. ‘Young for Old’ was the name given to a group of younger Samford residents who wished to support Samford Museum’s projects. They did this by organising several annual, social fundraising evenings in the Museum grounds. Numerous items were donated by generous businesses and auctioned by Kevin Hickey.

Margaret Hickey wrote in Samford Reminiscences Vol. 3, published 1995, of the highs, lows and changes Kevin, she and the family experienced, since moving their herd of 90 stud Friesians from Spicer’s Gap to a property at Bunya (now Draper) which they named Limerick, in September 1964.

In February 1974, Kevin and Margaret sold their milking herd and continued rearing Friesian heifers to sell on point of calving. Photos and details of two of Kevin’s multi award winning cows are included in Samford Reminiscences Vol. 4 (pictorial) published 1999.

Thank you Kevin for your support in many ways, especially bringing enjoyment to visitors in your unique way - auctioneering.

Copies of the 6 volumes of Samford Reminiscences are available for reading or purchase at Samford Museum, Wednesdays and Sundays 10am-4pm. Admission Adults $5; Children $1.

Scholarships Support Mature-Age ChangeMakers

Three worthy recipients of Community Bank Samford’s Scholarship program have each taken the plunge to change careers later in life in order to help others. The scholarship provides financial assistance to mature-age students enrolled at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Moreton Bay campus.

Each scholarship seeks to offset costs associated with tertiary study that can significantly impact a student’s ability to further their education.

Lynda Aldridge is in her third year of a Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/ Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies. Her goal is to become a local teacher focusing on environmental education, enabling students to cultivate positive relationships with themselves and the world around them.

“Whilst am I studying full time, I also undertake casual work as an Outdoor Leader for a school camp facility; therefore, the thought of not having any income for such long periods of time has been a little daunting,” Lynda said.

“The bank’s support has however alleviated the financial burden which will allow me to focus on my studies and continue to strive towards my goal of achieving at least 80 per cent for each subject, which I have managed to achieve so far.”

After working in a paralegal firm and being the sole carer of her mother for much of her life, Zoe Gayton is studying Bachelor of Nursing Science, looking to specialise in

Mental Health. “This scholarship means so much to me and takes a lot of stress off my shoulders,” Zoe said.

“I recently started work as an AIN, however looming ahead is my fourth 4-week placement, and a 6-week internship, which even working 7 days a week will leave me without sufficient income. This scholarship will give me some breathing room to just focus on my studies and learning to be the best nurse I can be,” she said.

As a single mum of five, Rachael Thurlow is also studying a Bachelor of Nursing Science. After 20 years of prioritising motherhood, she decided upon a new career path as a registered nurse and possibly a midwife.

“The wonderful gift of this scholarship will enable me to maintain my focus on my learning. Last year was a tough adjustment for me. However, I am a problem-solver, a capable woman, and a role model to those who look my way,” Rachael said.

Congratulations to these inspirational change-makers who have uprooted their

lives to shape future generations and support those in need of medical assistance.

Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank, provides three UniSC scholarships per year valued at $5000 each, and also offers 3 TAFE scholarships each year, taking the Bank’s annual commitment to $30,000.

June was a busy month at the Samford Valley Target Archers.

First, a group of twenty enthusiastic senior students from the Samford State School completed nine Friday afternoon sessions of archery instruction under some of the Club’s coaches. At the final day, the students were presented with medals signifying their growth in archery competency, as well as a certificate to acknowledge the completion of initial training.

On the second last weekend in June, the Club hosted the South Queensland Archery Society’s Target Championship for 2023. The Saturday tournament consisted of a round of 36 arrows shot at each of four distances – a total of 144 arrows. The distances varied with the age and gender of the archers, and the type of bow used, from longbows to compound bows.

The Sunday competition consisted of the “Canberra” rounds of 90 arrows. These rounds are of 30 arrows shot at each of three distances depending on the criteria mentioned above.

In archery terms, the South Queensland Archery Society is comprised of 11 Clubs from Casino in the south up to Hervey Bay in the north. For this Championship, 74 archers tested their expertise.

18 members of the Samford Valley Target Archers club competed, and the medal tally for those was 12 Gold medals, 3 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal - a very commendable achievement.

The next big project for Samford Archery is hosting the 2023 Archery Australia National Target Championships commencing in late September.

The last of “all good things” for the Club, the Committee is grateful that the State Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council have approved a grant for the completion of the shooting line shades, and the improvement of wheelchair access.

Bird surveys

During our monthly survey on 17 June, our birdwatchers recorded 56 species. It was a very slow start owing to the very cool conditions, other than a couple of Brown Cuckoo-doves feeding on fruiting Trema tomentosa (Native Peach) along the Eco-Trail.

Highlights included seeing three species of hirundine hawking together over the grassland (Welcome Swallow and Tree and Fairy Martins), and an adult White-eared Monarch near the waterhole. A pair of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos and a Brown Goshawk flew over during morning tea, rounding off the session nicely.

On 22 June, some of our team also carried out a quarterly bird survey of two vegetation plots at QUT SERF Camp Mountain, using the 2 hectares in 20 minutes protocol. This is part of our citizen science program with

TERN. The only ‘new’ bird recorded in the plots was Varied Triller and we encountered three winter migrants: Grey Fantail, Spotted Pardalote and Rose Robin.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

SAMFORD PARKLANDS DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

I am pleased to say that things are moving forward in this development of land acquired by Council more than 20 years ago, which is well known as an iconic part of the Samford Valley landscape and which has the potential to become great area for the community.

In 2022, a lot of positive community feedback was received as the vision and values for the proposed Village Green in Samford Parklands was developed. Since then, Council has been working with a team of designers to refine the concept plan. The plan is underpinned by a strong rural heritage and identity, shared values of education, sharing, teaching and connecting.

The new spaces build on the uses and functions already present on site (SCHUB, Eco-corridor, walking paths, agistment etc) and are designed for reflection and connecting to nature in a communal environment.

The Village Green (concept plan below) will include a large lawn for big gatherings,

small event spaces, picnic shelters and seating, productive planting beds and trees, a play space for children and additional carparking with access road. Council is now in the detailed design phase of the Village Green project, following which a tender will be advertised to construction contractors.

It is anticipated that construction of the Village Green area will be undertaken over two years, beginning in late 2023/early 2024. If you would like more information on the journey so far for the Samford Parklands, Village Green concept, go to Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au and search ‘Village Green’.

Lively Bluegrass and alt Country at Samford Live

Our winter afternoon live music series continues every fourth Saturday in July and August at Little Tree Bake and Brewhouse here in Main Street Samford.

For our next show on Saturday 22 July, we present the four-piece, toe tapping, festival favourites The Long Johns. From Woodford, Maleny and Brisbane Festivals to the Gympie Muster and Wallaby Creek, The Long Johns are heading to Samford for the hottest hoe down in town!

Be prepared for upbeat, alternative country and bluegrass with an old-time swing – a real four-piece possé! The Long Johns original material is peppered with the spiciest of flavours - songs of hope, loss, and hauntings. Fresh from launching their brand-new EP Bones on 8 July, The Long Johns are ready to ride shotgun and bang out their show right here in our valley.

With a line-up of banjos, sousaphone, national guitar, and pots and pans, they are Sian Evans, Steve Buchanan, Skritch and Paul Watson. A tincture of dark country, hillbilly roots and barnyard bangers.

“Brilliant...great talent”…”wish I had the words to tell you how much I love this” …”an awesome gig” – just a few of their fans.

Grab some friends and soak up the atmosphere at an afternoon at Little Tree. Enjoy tasty, shared plates, seasonal produce and beverages from the bar. Book soon to be sure of securing tickets – most Samford Live shows have been sell-outs.

Coming in August don’t miss two local greats – indie/pop singer Zoe Quinn and folk favourites Freight Train Foxes. Part of Samford Live’s community-based mission is to promote local artists, and these are two standouts. Both perform original material with Zoe Quinn having recorded

at Samford’s famed Airlock Studios, and Freight Train Foxes have chalked up two Queensland Music Award nominations.

participants and volunteers with two accessible toilets (one with adult change facilities), a shower and a laundry room. Currently, there are no amenities in close proximity to the centre, and the washing of horse rugs and other equipment is carried out off-site.

Samford Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) President, Rebecca Clemmey, thanked the Council and acknowledged Cr Grimwade’s unwavering support for the project over many years. She said the funding commitment would fill a ‘gap’ in vital infrastructure at the centre and was greatly appreciated by all who used or worked at the centre.

Samford RDA is recognised as a leading RDA centre in Australia with a covered arena and dedicated administration and tack sheds.

“I was very excited to announce the funding for this important piece of infrastructure that will assist the volunteers and members of Samford RDA,” Cr Grimwade said.

Long-awaited amenities block for RDA

Moreton Bay Regional Council has allocated $345,000 in the next budget to build an amenities block at the Samford RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds – a welcome announcement that will meet a long-awaited need.

According to Cr Darren Grimwade, the Council will fund the project through his divisional Local Community Infrastructure Program. The work will provide RDA

“After visiting the facility at Samford Showgrounds and personally seeing the difficulties the group has with no amenities suitable for their members, I was compelled to ensure that this project ranked number one on my list of local projects to be included in the 2023/24 financial year budget. I look forward to working with the committee of Samford RDA to ensure that the final design is perfect for the requirements of the group.”

DRY JULY – LET’S (NOT) DRINK TO THAT.

Having a month off alcohol has great health benefits, such as sleeping better, having more energy and of course, no hangovers! Dry July is also a fundraiser aimed at challenging social drinkers to change their habits for a month and make some healthy lifestyle changes, while also raising funds for people affected by cancer. So you’re not only helping others, you’re helping yourself. It’s a win-win!

If you’ve decided to take a break from alcohol for the month, here are some statistics that might help keep you on track.

• There is an increasing number of deaths from alcohol per year, a whopping 1,559 in 2021 alone.

• 77% of Australians 14 years and older consume more than the recommended amount of alcohol.

• Up to 1 in 5 emergency department presentations are due to alcohol/ alcohol related injury.

• 21% of drownings occur secondary to alcohol.

• Each week, 180 family violent assaults occur because of alcohol.

The campaign encourages people to drink responsibly and stick to the recommended daily guidelines for the rest of the year also. So, when August comes around and you’d like to have a social drink again, here are some tips from Dr Lindsey Jones, one of the doctors at Doctors at Samford Valley.

• Stick to a maximum of 10 standard drinks in a week with no more than 4 in one day.

• Set a spending limit before going out.

• Plan for a few alcohol-free days per week.

• Consider swapping your usual pub meet up for an alcohol free picnic.

• Reduce the amount of alcohol you keep at home.

• Trial the low alcohol or alcohol free drink alternatives.

• Try a new hobby to help change your routine.

NATIVE VIOLETS

We are fortunate in Australia to have a variety of native violets, three of which ae found locally. Two of these, the native violet (Viola banksii) and the Helidon violet (Viola perreniformis) are superficially alike. They are perennial herbs that produce stolons. The leaf shape of the native violet is almost circular with a narrow v-shaped sinus at the base, whilst that of the Helidon violet is semicircular with a deeply indented, wide base. The main difference, however, is in the flower colour, with the petals of the native violet being white with a blue-violet centre. The Helidon violet has petals that are fairly uniformly blue-violet, with the anterior petal having a white base streaked with violet veins. The native violet, which flowers throughout the year, is naturally found on the east coast from near Brisbane to Bateman’s Bay. The Helidon violet flowers from October to April and is found from North East Queensland through to coastal,

central New South Wales in shady places in eucalypt forests and woodlands or on rock faces.

Both of these species form a wonderful ground cover in moist locations that range from light to heavily shaded. As part of a cottage garden, courtyard or poolside garden, they are a low maintenance plant that provides a perennial, evergreen background with splashes of colour. They grow well in containers and are particularly attractive in hanging baskets. These violets tolerate light frosts, a wide variety of pH and soil types, from clay to loam. The native violet is playground friendly and the flowers, which are edible, are great in salads.

The third local species, the arrow-leaf violet ( Viola betonicifolia), has a wider distribution – from Cape York along the east coast to Tasmania. Although often found in moist, forest areas, they can also be seen in more open eucalypt forests and grassy hillsides. The plants occur singly or in clusters. The basal rosette consists of dark-green leaves that are lance-shaped and about 70mm long, with slightly scalloped margins. Purplish-blue flowers are produced on erect stems in spring and summer. This perennial herb will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions – moist to dry soils, in lowlands to alpine fields, in semi-shade or

full sun and is frost tolerant. It is wonderful in rockeries or planted in pockets of deep soil to form a drift through a garden bed. The arrow-leaf violet is the host plant to the endangered Laced Fritillary butterfly. Learn more at Paten Park Native Nursery. www.ppnn.org.au

THE NEED TO REHUMANISE CYCLISTS

While wearing high-vis seems like a good idea for cyclists to keep safe on the road, recent research from QUT found cyclists that wear safety vests or helmets look ‘less human’ compared to those who do not. This latest research was inspired by a 2019 Australian study that found more than half of car drivers thought cyclists were not completely human, which could trigger road aggression towards them.

“One female respondent said she deliberately left her long hair out when she cycled as she thought it helped her avoid some of the abuse her male counterparts received,” said QUT lead researcher and Brisbane urban planner Dr Mark Limb.

“We also asked people their overall view of cyclists and found that 30 per cent of respondents considered cyclists less than fully human,” he said.

Local cyclist and editor of Australian Mountain Bike magazine, Mike Blewitt, is not surprised by the findings, but says that there are other options to wearing high-vis that can promote bike safety on the roads.

“Often as a cyclist, if you have had a bad altercation and you do confront the driver it

can deescalate very quickly. But not always. Some people are angry and upset, probably about something else, but a lot of people will be apologetic,” Mike said.

What Mike has found in his day-to-day riding is that a greater threat to bike-rider safety is a lack of driver attention on the road.

“Driver distraction to me is the biggest concern. Even if someone uses handsfree, they’re often concentrating on what they’re saying in the call. It is easy to be distracted even without touching a phone,” Mike said.

roads in this area also become a crossing point from one trail to another.

“There are road connections everywhere, so it’s important to understand that cyclists as another user group will be on and off the road as well. This includes families, young kids and older people, so it’s quite a diverse group using bikes,” Mike said.

When it comes to safety, there are a few things cyclists can do to reduce their vulnerability on the bitumen.

“Indicating is important. When you’re on a bike you need to make your actions known to other road users. If possible, I try to make eye contact with a driver if there’s someone behind me and I need to move across,” Mike said.

“There are places where unfortunately the cycling infrastructure in the Valley is lacking. Main St is particularly bad with the amount of people pulling out. It’s tricky as people want to get past you, but there’s not anywhere to go without the risk of being car-doored, so I tend to avoid Main St if I can,” he said.

Despite these hazards as a cyclist on the road, those behind the wheel in Samford and surrounds tend to be a conscientious lot.

“The majority of drivers are fantastic, particularly locally. However, you do get some very close calls and it would be great if it didn’t happen as much as it did. In general though, drivers in our community are really very good,” he said.

“Unfortunately some of our roads aren’t great for cycling but there’s no other way through, such as going to Dayboro. There are some backways, but in some sections using the main road is unavoidable.”

With an array of trails appealing to mountain bikers and recreational cyclists,

“Also the turn into Gibbons Rd, while it could be an excellent piece of infrastructure, at the moment it’s just got too many blind corners and turns across traffic, so again sometimes I just modify the route.”

Infrastructure that separates cyclists from motorists is something QUT researcher Dr Limb believes is important for a city to consider as it evolves.

“It’s essential that we provide safe facilities for people to ride on and keep expanding our infrastructure. A city that has active transport is safer, healthier, quieter, and more environmentally friendly.”

Understanding Sugar.

Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for your body and brain. But as the saying goes: too much of a good thing can be harmful. It’s scientifically proven that a diet high in sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.

How Does Sugar A ect Your Teeth?

Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums.

Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out:

Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings –anything high in fructose.

What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health?

- Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste

- Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth

- Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean

- Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment

The Bottom Line

Healthy gut = healthy mouth. Say YES to a diet rich in..

- Plants and vegetables.

- Lean meats (limit red & processed meats)

- Unsaturated fats

- Vegetable oils

- Nuts

- Full fat fairy products

- Consume water after every meal to help wash away lingering food

Say NO to diets that are high in fructose and refined sugars and low in fibre.

SHOW UPDATE

Countdown to the 2023 Samford Show (and watching the skies)

Planning for the 2023 Samford Show is now in the final stages, getting ready for 15 and 16th July!

Members of the Show Society Committee confess to developing new morning rituals to go with their coffee. They start by looking up the long-range weather forecast for the July weekend. Then they go outside and scan the sky for any meaningful signs of impending cyclones. So far, the forecasts and the signs are all good – the weekend of the Show looks like shaping up as a perfect Samford winters day.

President of the Show Society Terry Hogan reminds patrons that the days will be warm but as the sun goes down over the Showgrounds before the fireworks on

Saturday evening, the temperature drops and winter woollies will be needed. After the fireworks, the famous Baker Boys Band will get the crowd warmed up again in the Forecourt and the Rotary Bar will provide various substances to keep limbs moving.

This year the Show Society has paid particular attention to providing a range of high quality food outlets in the Food Court area. Experience in recent years shows that patrons want a full day out with the family, including good food.

For the first time, the Showgrounds are connected to the district water supply to allow patrons to refill their own water containers at taps in in the Food Court.

Plastic containers are not allowed to be sold at the Showgrounds.

Show Society Treasurer Ingrid Hutton reminds patrons to get in early and buy their tickets online. These online tickets for adults, children, families, concessions and with children under 5 free, have not increased from last show, in recognition that some families might be doing it tough.

“Our Show gives families an affordable, high quality and safe experience in a setting that is unparalleled for its natural beauty,” said Ingrid.

Check the website to secure your online tickets - www.samfordshowsociety.com.au/ tickets/

Thank you to our Sponsors

The growing success of the Samford Show is directly attributable to the support of businesses in our community, both local and further afield. Without this critical support there would be no annual Show. The organisers of the Show take great pleasure in thanking our 2023 sponsors.

DICKSON NOTES

The Dickson Seniors Expo is just over a month away on Tuesday 22 August, so mark your calendars for an event that promises to be informative, engaging and fun.

The Expo provides seniors an opportunity to connect with healthcare providers, retirement and assisted living facilities, community organisations, health and wellness as well as federal, state and local government services. There will also be plenty of entertainment, carparks, prizes and your chance to win a $500 grocery gift card. Entry is free!

The Expo will be held at South Pine Sports Centre, 620 South Pine Road Brendale. Whether you’re a senior yourself, a family member, or a caregiver, I look forward to seeing you there!

Supporting local community groups

I’ve always been dedicated to supporting local community organisations and initiatives, so I am delighted to announce that through Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Programme, I was able to assist the Samford Area Men’s Shed and the Samford and District Show Society with securing funding for upgrades to equipment and facilities.

The Stronger Communities Programme was an initiative of the former Coalition Government and assisted many grassroots organisations with financial support for small capital projects. The decision by the Albanese Labor Government to cut the programme following the allocation of Round 8 funding is very disappointing to many communities right around Australia including ours.

If you’d like to stay up to date with federal grants and programs, you can subscribe to my grants mailing list. My contact details are below.

Sporting Grants

Applications for highly sought after Local Sporting Champions Grants and Local Para Champions Grants are now open! Successful applicants receive financial support to help cover costs associated with attending championships (successful Local Sporting Champions applicants receive $500-$750; successful Local Para Champions applicants receive $750-$1000). For more information, including eligibility and application, head to:

https://www.sportaus.gov. au/grants_and_funding/ local_sporting_champions

https://www.sportaus.gov.au/ grants_and_funding/local-para-champions Applications close 31 July 2023.

Congratulations Max

Congratulations to Mount Samson local Max Neumann on his recent win in the PTO European Triathlon Championship in Ibiza, Spain. I also want to give a shout out to Max’s coach and brother Mitchell – well done. It is a fantastic achievement and I look forward to hearing about Max and Mitchell’s continued success.

Stay connected

If there is anything I can do to help, or any local issues you’d like to raise, please send me an email at peter.dutton.mp@aph. gov.au or call my office in Strathpine on 3205 9977.
