WOW! RECOGNITION FOR LOCAL BUSINESS At the Samford Chamber of Commerce March breakfast meeting, guest speaker Caroline Lovett from Credible Source Solutions gave an excellent presentation on recognising and rewarding excellence in the workplace. Caroline has over 20 years experience in team leadership, employee development and the positive customer experience. Her knowledge of how to get the best out of teams was a valuable learning for the local business leaders who attended.

Caroline also partners with the International WOW! Awards to promote and assist with managing the employee recognition program in Australia, complementing her training program. Incorporated into the breakfast was a special presentation to Joanne (Jo) Pollard, owner of Samford Design & Print.

The Samford Chamber committee were asked to select local businesses who were worthy recipients of this award.

Specifically looking for a business with evidenced support to the business community, they chose Samford Design & Print.

“The Chamber acknowledged that Joanne is always ready to step in and offer help, support and guidance to Samford and

surrounds businesses. She spends time with new businesses giving advice and sharing her business experience to help them be successful,” said Chamber President Mandy Bell.

Jo was surprised and humbled to receive the Award.

“It was a huge surprise to receive this award, very unexpected. I am one of the lucky people who has the pleasure of doing what I love every day in a community of the most supportive customers and businesses.

This recognition is not only for me but my amazing staff, Jo (2) and Stacey. The support

and hard work that they bring to the team allows me to do what I do,” she said.

Located in the Country Centre in Main Street, the business serves customers from all over North Brisbane and beyond, providing graphic design, printing and stationery services at fair prices and with fast turnaround times.

“We are a business that is very people focused and our goal is to make positive connections with everyone we deal with, from our customers through to our suppliers. VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD LAND VALUATIONS COMMUNITY MEETING PLANNED As many of you will be aware, the Valuer General of Queensland has released Land Values which are used to calculate Council rates, State rent and Land Tax. According to the Qld Government (Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy), for the City of Moreton Bay local government area, this revaluation included 161,982 properties, with a total value of $84,451,783,500, an overall increase of 36 percent since the last valuation issued in 2022. Rural Residential makes up $16,536,098,300 or 19.6% of total land value.

There has been many comments and concerns raised on our local social media pages and emails to the SDPPA. By now most residents will have received a letter advising of their new land value. Some residents are reporting upwards of 50% increases. This does not directly correlate to the same percentage increase of your Council rates. (See Cr Grimwade’s article on Page 18).

The SDPPA is planning a public community meeting and has requested the Valuer General attend, with the assistance of a local resident Neil Murphy. We will update you on the date and time as soon as this is locked in. Please keep up to date on our Facebook page and through this newspaper.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley MARCH FOR MALARIA Friday 19 April The Earlyact Club of Samford State School, together with the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, is anticipating a great crowd of Samford locals to join them in the March Against Malaria – an Australia-wide event to raise awareness of the impact of malaria around the globe. It is part of a Rotary campaign to “Finish the Fight” and contribute to malaria elimination.

The Earlyact Club (a Rotary-sponsored lunchtime club committed to community charity projects) is collaborating with Samford Rotary to organise this event on Friday 19 April. Students and their parents are asked to meet at John Scott Park in Main Street, and after a brief talk by local Rotarian, Dai Mason, (a RAM Global Board Member), about the need to eliminate malaria and the importance of this event, they will assemble and walk the 1.7km to the school. There is an open invitation to the community to attend – look for posters in the Village for more details.

Samford School Chaplain, Josslyn Cathcart, who co-ordinates the lunchtime club with support from local Rotarians, said that each term the students choose a community project to get involved in and support.

“The students are very enthusiastic about this project. They are busy making posters to promote awareness of the event and its importance. They are also making placards which they will carry on the day of the march through Samford Village,” Chappy Joss said.

Samford Rotary supporters Carol Robinson and Katie Wilson have also organised for special edition March Against

Samford State School students read about Malaria in the lead up to the walk.

Malaria wristbands to be made and the Earlyacters are selling them at school to raise money for the cause.

On 19 April you too will have the chance to join the Samford community in walking to raise awareness and funds for Malaria elimination. All funds raised will support Malaria elimination programs run by local experts in the Western Pacific Rim region of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.

Samford Rotary Club President, Rob Robinson said: “Rotary is committed to joining the fight against Malaria and help the children, pregnant women and the elderly who are most at risk. Together, with you our local community, we can eliminate this disease in the Western Pacific Rim region, saving lives and helping communities thrive.” Mr Robinson hopes this will become an annual event.

LOCAL NEWS Therapy Dogs Help on Ruff Days Training service dogs is no mean feat, but local dog whisperer Nikki Bignell has dedicated her life to this passion, with her most recent venture helping others to realise the benefits of working alongside therapy and support animals in various environments.

Therapy and Support Animals Australia brings therapy animals into a range of situations to help people remain calm. This includes disability and mental health sessions, airport crowd calming, at funeral homes, and in learning institutions.

Nikki’s unique experience in police dog operations and working with explosive detection dogs in Africa has resulted in her developing a Therapy Training Course. The course certifies therapy dogs and handlers for placement in diverse settings, including medical practices, schools, and hospitals.

Her Puppy Stay and Train and Intensive Obedience program has benefited over 800 puppies and 600 adult dogs nationwide.

Nikki’s career in the Queensland Police Service spanned over two decades where she trained and handled police dogs across various disciplines, including general purpose, accelerant detection, narcotic detection, and explosive detection. She also established a Labrador breeding program, ensuring a steady supply of highly skilled detection dogs within the Service.

In Nairobi, Nikki spearheaded the establishment of the first explosive detection dog program for a prominent security company, enhancing security measures and improving employment opportunities for local women.

Back home with our current fight against fire ants, Nikki was asked to train fire ant detection dogs by the Queensland Government. Through this endeavour, she realised there was a shortage of appropriate dogs for this activity, leading her to acquire two American Labradors with exceptional work ethic and drive.

These dogs have most recently had their first litter of pups, with each puppy receiving an array of various training. Some pups have already done well enough to join the Queensland Corrective Services detection team.

Despite some puppies heading into their next stage of working life, others from this litter have temperaments that would better fit living with sporting families or families that are active and have space to run. LOCAL NEWS WHERE’S MY OTHER SOCK? On any given day in the land of washing, there is undoubtable heard the words – “Where’s my other sock?”

This regular conversation has culminated in a simple but clever idea. This is the story of ClipSocks, a start-up born out of a shared frustration with the perennial problem of mismatched socks.

With a dream to solve the age-old problem of lost socks globally, Samford Village locals Tialyn (Ty) and Sheldon Loechel found themselves amidst a sea of single socks.

The arduous task of sorting through them led to a moment of epiphany.

“There has to be a better way,” said Sheldon, “I have the same problem every week!” Thus began the genesis of ClipSocks—a solution to the age-old dilemma of sock management.

The concept was elegantly simple: clips that snap together, keeping socks paired from the laundry to the drawer. With this idea in mind, the founders embarked on a journey of dedication and innovation.

Over the next six months, they meticulously crafted prototypes, working tirelessly to perfect both the clip and the sock itself.

WATER WISDOM Water. It’s something gardeners often lament not having enough of, but, due to recent plentiful rainfall, many of us are currently faced with the opposite problem – too much! If you have experienced unwanted water in your garden, or just watched it run off knowing in the months to come you’ll wish you’d captured or at least slowed it down, then come to the Samford Edible Garden Trail on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May. We have knowledgeable garden hosts bursting to share their water management insights and successes with you – they may even divulge what didn’t work, saving you the same experiment – whether it’s: • diverting it away from where it’s not wanted to where it is (Keith and Sarah’s contouring, pictured, and Ruth and Tony’s berms), • slowing it down to seep through

a garden bed or into the natural ground (Trent’s raised beds, Anna and Dave’s swales), or • making too little go further (Lee’s wicking beds).

In the meantime, here are some hot tips from some of the SEGT team about water management methods they’ve implemented and why: • Flooding in 2022 at Chrissy’s saw her put in a small diversion bank and an extra underground drainage pipe that pops out of the ground and waters her citrus and banana trees, which are now thriving! She also uses a lot of mulch to slow down water flow.

• Beck has found that using raised beds has made a huge difference in stopping her veges from drowning.

SEGT is a project of the SDPPA

You’d think that this would be a group of wise heads, philosophers, or elders sitting in the Lyceum, debating the human condition, drawing on art, literature, music and personal experience. Well, in a way it is, but you can be absolutely sure that not one participant would describe themselves as a scholarly philosopher. The exact opposite, in fact.

Sometimes when a concept is presented, a look of confusion passes around the table, but as an idea is explored, probed and reflected upon, the room fills with energy, generated by intense sharing and animated discussion. Everyone leaves with a spring in their step, uplifted and revitalised by participating in ‘the good stuff’ discussion.

Some topics investigated so far include renewal, resolutions, silence, opportunity, humour, and humility. What a treasuretrove of experience and insight to enrich our ordinary lives!

On Friday, 26th April at 3pm, after Anzac Day, the topic is Peace. Pop in to join the discussion or come a little earlier to meet the group.

Before you start imagining all sorts of shenanigans, this group focuses on a different idea each month – a word with the potential to enhance our common humanity. ‘The Good Stuff’ discussion takes place on the last Friday of the month. (3pm – 4pm)

SDPPA SUPPORTED PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Bushcare The persistent morning showers on Sunday 10 March resulted in a much lower than usual turnout for our Councilassisted bushcare working bee, although, ironically, the weather cleared to a very pleasant, dry afternoon (as forecast by BoM). Our priority was to spread a mound of forest mulch on the flatter top of the bank of revegetation zone P4, but first we had to weed around our plants.

After completing those tasks, we began planting and watering additional trees and shrubs in the area badly scoured by the recent floods. These included a few advanced plants in prominent positions. The diverse species mix included Brown Pearwood (Niemeyera antiloga), Muttonwood (Myrsine variabilis), Hollywood (Auranticarpia rhombifolia), Round Lime (Citrus australis) and Bluntleaved Tulipwood (Harpullia hillii). We have now replaced all plants lost from P4 in the recent floods and added a few more. Afterwards, our volunteers enjoyed the refreshments kindly provided by our parent body, the SDPPA. Our next Council-assisted bushcare working bee at the Eco-Corridor will be

on Sunday 14 April from 2pm to 4pm. This month we aim to plant a few more trees and shrubs in the river bank planting P4 and some advanced trees near the picnic site. The rain just keeps coming, causing rampant weed growth across the whole site, so we are hoping for a solid turn out. We welcome new volunteers (if you contact us first, we can speed up the on-site induction process).

Contractor work on site On 19 March, our local contractor, Bushtekniq, worked on site to remove prolific ‘sun weeds’ in hillside planting P3. This area has been rather neglected because of the recent focus on restoring the flood damage in the rainforest zones on the alluvial flats below. The weeds were mainly the usual suspects, but Jono pointed out some Coral Creeper (Baleria repens), which may be new for the site and one for our volunteers to watch out for.

Bushtekniq also chopped and dropped some fallen trees to create habitat for lizards and invertebrates, and lopped the branches along the boundaries of all plantings to ensure that the adjacent grass can be mowed by Council. Finally, they did some weeding around our new trees and shrubs in riverbank zone P4, so it was a very

productive day. This essential maintenance is funded by our parent body, the SDPPA, as part of our 3-year plan.

The most common mistake is potential investors simply don’t do the numbers before they buy. They assume that even if you lose money on a month to month basis, the eventual capital gains will easily offset this loss. Maybe that will happen, but what if it doesn’t?

Finally, too many would-be property investors fail to properly understand the property market or suburb they are buying into. This can lead to either paying too much for a property or spending too much money on renovations and over-capitalising.

There is an old saying that no investment is as safe as a bricks and mortar investment, but is that really the case or is it something that we just like to believe, spurred on by what appears to be the never-ending increase in property prices?

How much money will you lose if the rent doesn’t cover the outgoings on the property while you own it? And how much capital growth do you need to achieve after tax to make a profit?

While it’s easy to think investing in residential property is a fail-safe way to make money, there are endless traps for anyone hoping to get rich quick by buying into property.

It’s also imperative to get good advice from the outset. If you are investing in property to minimise your overall tax bill, then its important you have a tax agent walk you through the key numbers.

Over-capitalising refers to a situation where a property owner may spend $100,000 improving a property by undertaking renovations or landscaping only to find when it comes time to sell that they have only added $50,000 to the final price buyers are prepared to spend on a property in that area.

Most economists believe the steady price rise in Australian housing during the past two decades is due only to two factors.

If you are simply trying to minimise your tax bill, you might consider buying a new house or apartment, where you can potentially claim a raft of non-cash depreciation charges, which in turn may significantly boost your tax deductions, and with it, the likely financial success of the investment.

EASTER CELEBRATIONS Hand-made gifts and treats were delivered to delighted Meals on Wheels Samford (MOW) clients and volunteers in the lead up to Easter, thanks to local crafting group ‘Crafting Kindness’, and regular volunteer and cook extraordinaire Margerite Ungerer. Margerite never misses an annual event to bake and donate delectable cakes and beautifully hand decorated biscuits for volunteers and clients – they are works of art!

The Crafting Kindness group had very busy fingers, creating 80 crocheted baskets, lovingly filled with Easter eggs and lollies.

Crafting Kindness meets at the SCHUB on Friday’s where another amazing volunteer Julie Martin supports the group of lovely ladies including Sharon, Lucy, Doris, Lyn, Lois, Jen and Julie. These cleverly handmade creations were so thoughtful and loved by all who received them.

Never having idle hands means Crafting Kindness has now moved onto their next project - donating warm rugs and beanies to those in need for the winter ahead. If anyone has leftover wool to donate, this would be gratefully received by the group, and can be dropped in to Meals on Wheels at the Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) on any weekday.

Following the easing of the rains, our year started with our first major event catering for Native Plants Qld Annual Plant Market at the Samford Showgrounds.

Once again, the event was very enjoyable and a great success. The Lemon Myrtle punch was very popular as was the BBQ and loads of homemade biscuits, cakes, preserves and sauces. Thanks go to Trevor Bacon and his team for the invitation and ensuring all our needs were met.

Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th will see BindersKeepers at Bunnings Keperra with the orange book wagon full of fiction and non-fiction books for both children and adults, plus extra tables laden with jigsaw puzzles and games for all ages and some children’s toys.

A fortnight later on Saturday 20th April, the wagon will be present at the Samford Valley Community Church with items similar to above.

The month of May will see the crew back sorting the main collection of books in the containers.

An annual event, the two-day Book Sale is planned for later in the year.

EASTER CELEBRATIONS Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members The SSN Friday Social outings group celebrated an early Easter with a delicious morning tea provided by Anthony from The Samford Patisserie - a wonderful and long term supporter of the SSN. Thank you, Anthony to you and your staff. The food was delightful, substantial and sincerely appreciated.

The morning tea was held in the Samford Rangers clubhouse. The Rangers kindly allowed the SSN to use their fantastic facility which provided us with plenty of space and a beautiful outlook of the area - and it wasn’t raining!

Our clients were encouraged to wear a hat, bonnet, or some creation on their heads with a prize awarded to the best creation. A very difficult choice as there were many great hats, but Diane’s was particularly clever with light-up eggs on the top. Volunteer Carolyn (pictured above) came a close second with her very brightly coloured hat. Talented professional photographer Joep Buijs was

our judge and photographer. Joep is also a long time volunteer of the SSN and his passion and expertise in photography is always welcomed so we can record our special events. Thank you, Joep.

We played a couple of tricky Easter word games, the clients chose a small easter basket crocheted by Shaz and the day finished with a bunch of easter goodies handed out by our volunteers. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you to all our drivers and other helpers too. Happy Easter everyone!

In the challenging task of selecting three winners, Clarissa enlisted the expertise of Kat from Pilates Emporium Samford. Each submission showcased commendable effort, making the decision a tough one.

WHO STARTS? Lots of events, activities and groups exist in Samford. But where do they come from.

Who starts them? And who says who can start them?

Perhaps anybody and nobody.

In the previous Village Pump, indeed as in most Pumps, we invited people to suggest an idea that may be beneficial to the community and maybe to our society and nature itself. So, in the past few days one of our community members touched base to see if something might be done locally about the use and abuse of soft plastics.

A process of connecting with interested groups and individuals has started. Who knows where that may end up, but it’s safe to bet that something will happen merely because one person decided to raise the issue. Ideas don’t need permission. They need energy and persistence.

Other cases in point range from the Carers Foundation and Givit to the community garden and the Eco Corridor…. plus many more in Samford. All coming from committed and passionate people who started the ideas and followed them through. They didn’t stop to ask ‘who starts’, they just started!

Who starts the process is up to

individuals having a dream and the courage and capacity to come out of the recesses of their mind and into the open spaces of the community. Is this you?

GOLD FOR GOLDEN FOX Dominating their first ever event, Golden Fox Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitors rolled away with numerous medals from The Qld BJJ Circuit South East Qld Championship. Four team members represented our local area at the Runaway Bay event on 3rd March.

Outfoxing the competition, placings were awarded to Eamonn Cox (2x Gold), Drew Hyde (1x Gold and 1x Bronze), Ella Watson (1x Gold and 1x Bronze) and Felix Woolmer (2x Bronze).

Seven team members then competed in The Caloundra Open on 24th March with Golden Foxes again no strangers to the podium: Eamonn Cox (2x Silver), Drew Hyde (2x Gold), Sok Callum Stewart (1x Gold and 1x Bronze), Samuel Spicer (1x Gold) and Felix Woolmer (2x Bronze).

Head instructor and Golden Fox founder, Eamonn Cox, was over the moon with these results, particularly for four students who had never competed before, each winning gold.

“I am so incredibly proud of not only our team’s performance, but simply that they were willing to step onto the mats and give it a go,” he said.

“Our gym has only been open since August 2023, so a lot of these competitors don’t even have a year of BJJ under their belt. Their grit and determination to give it a go and leave it all on the mats to represent Golden Fox makes me honoured to be their coach.”

While winning medals recognises the skills and fortitude of those who participate, there is more to be taken away from these two competitions.

“Another important highlight from these events was that it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, there is always something to gain from competing and testing your BJJ. You either earn a medal or you learn where to improve and the latter is often more valuable,” Eamonn said.

Anyone looking to transform their exercise regime this year may want to consider donning a gi (traditional uniform) and testing their grappling prowess in an encouraging environment.

“The hardest part of BJJ is making that first step into the gym and onto the mats.

We know it can be an intimidating sport to try, but please don’t feel scared to come into the gym and say hi,” Eamonn said.

“The Golden Fox family is incredibly welcoming and supportive and we love having beginners in the gym. We would absolutely love any Samford locals to come down and have a free trial to see if BJJ is the sport for them.”

OUT & ABOUT A New Better World Garden Coming Scouting exists to bring positive change to the world, both to individual members and to our local community, and the Samford Scout Group has been doing that for more than 61 years now.

The Scout Movement has a strong commitment towards “Creating a Better World” which is literally about community involvement through Scouting. The Better World Framework was developed by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement in partnership with the United Nations, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals initiative. It allows Scouts to take action to create a better world, by focusing on community development in Scouting with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals – towards a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

Further to the Scouts Queensland aim of ‘Sustainable Scouting in Sustainable Communities’, Samford Scout Group is building the Scouts Better World Garden to promote the aims of creating a better world for all. This will be located at the eastern end of the Samford Scout Group property area alongside Cash Avenue North Samford, to provide an additional activity area for Scouts and to promote Scouting to

the local community.

The Garden will include table seating, a signature flagpole, garden planters and feature native plant displays. Also included will be interpretive signage and a surprise inclusion for smaller children.

Construction will be occurring alongside development works for the Samford Laneway Project with completion expected mid-year.

In addition to this, the Group recently secured a Queensland Government grant to provide nestbox homes for Samford Wildlife. Shortly after the first nestbox building workshop was held, nearby a squirrel glider was seen to have been displaced from its home in a fallen black wattle tree and the Scouts sprang into action to provide a solution.

The Scouts selected one of their newly made nestboxes suitable for gliders, a bed was made inside with the softest leaves and then the nestbox was mounted in the closest tree.

Sometime later, when a suitable pole camera was constructed for nestbox inspecting, the first nestbox to be checked was that erected for the little glider.

To everyone’s delight, the nestbox was providing a home for three squirrel gliders.

Nestboxes are artificial structures that mimic natural hollows and provide wildlife with a comfortable and safe place to rest in and raise their young. They are an important aspect of wildlife conservation in areas where not enough natural nesting hollows are available, or they have been removed by land clearing.

Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Brian!

Of all the Crime Investigation Photographers you’ve met in your life, the moment you meet Brian in person is guaranteed to be the most recent. His highly respected photographic career spans half a century, and includes weddings, funerals, publicity images, surgical ops in the ER, still life in the morgue, and of course forensic snap shots of human remains for the Victorian Police Service’s calendar.

Then, after shifting to Brisbane in 1990, he developed a keen interest in taking professional photos of diamonds and highend jewellery, becoming the go-to guy for moguls of the jewellery industry wanting to evaluate, market or simply drool over their precious artefacts.

Unfortunately, none of the glittering merchandise in that arena accidentally found its way onto his person as he had hoped, which meant he was forced to find a legitimate source of steady income. So

for 10 years he slaved away at a major warehouse chain, while dreaming of the good times when he freely roamed the Samford countryside capturing birds, animals, flowers, trees, landscapes and other people’s food, on his trusty camera.

Although he wields state of the art photographic equipment and experience galore, he admits that the humble mobile phone is just as capable of producing

excellent pictures, even in the hands of those of us who admit to being one or two levels below competent.

Meanwhile, he went to TAFE, qualified as a Microsoft Certified Engineer, and set out on an altruistic journey of helping others with their computers and mobile phones, and has earned the envious reputation in his retirement village as the IT Guru.

Joining SAMS in 2019, he began solving all our computer problems (even those we didn’t know we had), editing our newsletter, writing articles on SAMS for the Village Pump, and leading The Shutterbugs Group who gather every Monday and are often let loose on photographic field trips armed with their camera phones and the 000 number just in case. For years he looked forward to a quiet, restful retirement. No chance, Brian!

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES SONGS OF PEACE What is it about special events that make us want to mark them in song? Christmas Carols, International Women’s Day - the list goes on. For a while now I have been feeling the call to create an event around Anzac Day in which we can listen to and sing the songs of war (particularly the personal stories from the trenches) and also sing the songs that dream of the possibility of peace.

It has sometimes been perceived that those who wish to advocate for peace are disrespectful of the sacrifices made by those who have fought in war, but this is not always true. We can listen fully, hear and acknowledge the stories of the horror of war. ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’

by Eric Bogle is one such story in song that comes to mind.

By sharing songs of peace, we can wave our flag and hold onto our hope and our prayers for a world where the parade doesn’t need to happen, the unmarked gravestones don’t exist, because somehow, humanity has managed the impossible dream and found a way to keep the peace.

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one (thanks John Lennon!). These words echo my sentiments and are just as relevant today as they were when they were first written. If you feel inspired, grab a friend and a ticket from the link below (partnered with Samford Live) and come join us at 7pm at Zen Space on 27 April. New Members Welcome If you would like to help the bush along Cedar Creek regenerate itself and save critically endangered species, new members are always welcome. This month we continued removing fishbone fern which had infested a large stretch of the creek’s upper bank. Our intrepid leader Stefan from City of Moreton Bay was elated when he found what he later identified as Rhodamnia rubescens or Scrub Turpentine, a critically endangered species.

This shrub will now have a greater chance of flourishing along the creek as we remove the competing weeds.

Thank you, Samford!

With your support, our Autumn Plants Market at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 23 March was another great success, with more native plant enthusiasts coming through the door than last year.

The crowds arrived early to ensure they found their most desired items. The plants left steadily, and the long queue hurried through the checkouts. By lunchtime, the Samford Branch had again sold all 249 plants.

Our local Plant Propagation Group supervisor, Peter Storer, said it is due to “the combination of having the right highquality plants at fair prices, well organised on the stall, and providing the right advice to customers.” Our team’s A4 plant information sheets were understandably

in demand by gardeners, given the more than one thousand species on offer! Our buyers tend to come back to us every year.

Altogether, over 6,000 plants were sold.

Our gratitude goes to the twenty plant growers who trucked their plants from as far away as Northern NSW and the Sunshine Coast. They made the event exciting with some rare, much-sought-after plants.

Thankfully, they reported satisfaction with their sales. Some commented gratefully on the kindness of all those who helped carry their plants in, acknowledging that everyone present was smitten with a passion for growing native plants. They praised the smoothness of the overall organisation, including the efficiency of the electronic checkouts. One grower said he was less interested in profit because his plant devotion enriched his life alongside

his intense day job.

The buyer numbers continue to increase annually, some travelling from further afield. One chap from Monto said he came because he plants trees. Another from the west of Brisbane bought to complete the landscaping of his park, adding to the 6,000 native plants already in the ground.

Delicious sustenance was kindly supplied by the Samford local library team, Binders Keepers, who were happy with their stall’s fundraising results. Many thanks to your team, and I recommend their Lemon Myrtle Punch. This recipe and others are on a list from the Bush Tucker Table and are available through our Samford NPQ branch.

QCWA Samford We had a great time learning all about Sugar Easter Egg making at the Samford Bowls Club recently, thanks to the North Brisbane Cake Decorating Group. Mutual members Trish, Victoria and Marguerite patiently taught us how to decorate sugar eggs. It was a great experience.

Guest Speaker at our March meeting was Paul Ryan from Paten Park Native Nursery, a not-for-profit community Nursery whose purpose is to protect and restore the ecological values of south-east Queensland.

We learnt so much about edible local flora thanks to Paul. I think I want an Elderberry tree or maybe go bigger with a big Bunya nut tree.

Our last and by no means least fun times was a trip to our sister CWA group at Dayboro where we learnt all about Pumpkins. Did you know the biggest recorded pumpkin was over one thousand kilograms? The local pumpkins were certainly edible as we tried all delicious pumpkin recipes - brownies, cheesecake, chutneys, salads and of course pumpkin scones. Delicious!

THE SAMFORD VILLAGE BLACKSMITH Henry Wa d s w o r t h Longfellow (27 February 1807 – 24 March 1882), an American poet and educator, wrote The Village Blacksmith, a tribute to a hardworking blacksmith, his ancestor, Stephen.

The blacksmith, with these many skills, displayed toiling at his forge, hammering out horseshoes, strength and skill using his anvil, and production of necessary implements, and services to the surrounding community. He was a confidant to many and a social outing for others.

As for our very own blacksmith shop now at The Samford Museum, official opened on 10 November 2001, it was originally situated in the south-west corner of the now defunct CSIRO land, on the corner of Burton Lane and Dayboro Road (Mt. Samson Road). The Elder family originally owned this shop.

It was managed by their two sons, three days a week, mainly for repair work for the farmers. The shop closed in 1914, as both sons enlisted in WW1.

In 1918, it was moved by Harry Keylar between Cash’s store and the hotel, making it closer to the railway. When delivering bananas and timber for Brisbane as well as cream for the Kingston butter factory, farmers with their wagons and horses frequently required his services. Jim McGinn joined Harry in his business.

The shop was sold to Fred Schmidt in 1926; a year later, in 1927, his brother Jerry purchased the blacksmith shop. Jerry’s two sons, Fred and Vivian continued the business until 1942, as Fred joined the A.I.F. Bill Greg was the next owner. His brother Charlie also had a blacksmithing business at Red Hill. Brotherly competition caused

Samford Museum so much fun! Charlie at Red Hill and Bill at Samford. 1948 saw the closure of the business. Thankfully, our museum was the beneficiary of Bill’s blacksmith tools and anvil, which are still in use to this day. Now the blacksmith stands with pride within the museum grounds.

Blacksmith shops nowadays I would say would mainly be in museums. Present day versions of this particular service would be equal to a garage for our modern-day vehicles, although blacksmiths operate in a small role and support the equine and bovine industry.

Our blacksmith building and contents are well patronised and a much appreciated area of the museum, with groups, school children, people from all walks of life and especially overseas visitors.

We personally have a blacksmith who visits on the first Sunday of each month and special occasions, where he demonstrates and displays his skills, chiefly creating works of art e.g. rings, bangles and poppy flowers. All pieces are very popular.

The museum opens on Wednesday and Sunday 10am – 4pm. Groups welcome.

LOCAL CLUB NEWS VICTORY FOR THE STAGS The scoreboard may point to an easy victory but the path to the 2024 Pine Cup was fought with grit and determination characteristic of the Samford Stags. At 36 to nil, Samford defeated the Dayboro Cowboys in the Cup final, with tries scored by Brian Waigana, Ethan Chapple, Bailey Robinson, Christopher Moriarty, Jordan Hillhouse and Todd Shelton.

Coach Colin Saukuru was proud of the team’s efforts both on the night and in the lead up to the final game.

“After three weeks of pre-season footy, the boys went into the final prepared to play a tough game. From the onset, they were physical and played simple footy to lead 14-0 at halftime,” he said.

“After the break they continued to grind and play eyes up footy and ran away from Dayboro winning 36-0. I couldn’t pick any standouts as all the 19-man squad contributed to the win.”

This is Samford’s first victory since 2006 and only their third final win since the cup began in 1996.

Round 1: Samford defeated Dayboro 22- 4 • Round 2: Samford defeated Pine Central 36-6 • Round 3: Samford defeated Pine Rivers 76-0 Securing the Pine Cup kicks off another promising season for the Stags, with sporting teams in all age groups from under 6 to Under 16 in the juniors. Fixtures will begin on Sunday 21st April. Three senior teams will take the field, including an under 19 team for the first time. Fixtures begin with a double header on 6th April at Alan Cash Oval.

League tots for all kids aged 3 to 5 years will commence on Wednesdays just after Easter. More details can be found on the Samford Stags Facebook page.

To keep up with Samford’s sky-high scores, a new scoreboard now graces the Stags’ home ground thanks to a City of Moreton Bay grant.

“This is great addition to our club and we will be the envy of the league. A big thanks to Councillor Darren Grimwade and COMB,” grants coordinator and life member Mick Hughes said.

DIVISION 11 UPDATE Land Valuations & Council Rates I have been contacted by many residents recently after the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) issued land valuations for properties across the region. This valuation is based on site value which essentially is the market value of your land in its present state. It is important that residents understand that Council has no input or ability to influence property valuations. The increase in land valuations in some suburbs has been quite substantial, but this is not a direct correlation to a potential increase in

your Council rates.

Land value is only one factor in determining what your property rates will be. Your potential rate increase will generally be much smaller than your percentage increase in land value, due to other factors that are taken into consideration when determining the rateable value of your property.

However, in the event that you do have a large increase in rates due to your land valuation increase, Council has implemented an upper limit on the rate of rise per annum that can be charged. Currently this is set at a 9% cap to residential properties.

Residents and businesses in Moreton Bay pay rates. This is the main source of income for Council, and these funds are allocated through Council’s budget process each year to a vast range of community services and programs.

Your rates not only go to maintaining roads, footpaths, parks, gardens, sporting facilities and grounds, they also help provide library services, public health services, disaster response and management, dog and cat control processes, food safety regulations, waste management and land care - the list is extensive. In the 2023/24 budget, the general rate rise was 4.45% which was well below the CPI inflation rate, and I am proud to say that City of Moreton Bay is one of the lowest rating Councils in South East Queensland.

If you disagree with your valuation, you can lodge an objection with the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines & Energy (DNRME). It must be lodged within 60 days of the issue date of the new valuation. Details can be found on your land valuation notice. ‘Topspin’ The rain held off long enough for the Samford red ball and orange ball tournaments to proceed on Friday 22 March.

Red ball is a beginner grade for the Club’s very youngest, littlest, players. It is played using a larger, softer ball that is slower with less bounce. From a starting group of 13 players, Sebastian K and Sophie H made the final, with Sophie H claiming victory. Great job all players (and parents!).

Next was orange ball, the next grade up, with players aged usually between 8 – 12. The focus and enthusiasm of players in this grade is always a delight, and the high quality of play from all participants provided a thrilling tournament. After some hard-fought rallies, Zoe O took out the final against Sienna H. Thank you and well done again to all players, parents and coaches for these fun events.

While on the subject of junior players, the second week of tennis holiday ‘camp’ is running between 8 to 12 April. This offers a daily fun and skills program to younger players at all levels. Even in dry conditions, the court surface will still impact a player’s game.

STC is fortunate to offer a range of surfaces including synthetic grass and a brand of cushioned hard court (plexicushion).

While it is grouped with other ‘hard’ court surfaces, plexicusion is formed using an acrylic surface over a rubber cushioning layer. It provides reduced impact on joints

while still providing the speed and bounce of a hard-court surface. The synthetic grass courts offer an even lower impact option, while maintaining good ball speed. The main trade-offs are less bounce and lower grip levels, due in part to a dusting of sand that forms part of the synthetic grass surface.

The range of courts on offer at the STC provide options to players of all ages and skill levels. Of course, the best playing surface will not compensate for a lack of practice, or skill.

Season Wrap It’s a wrap for Samford Stingrays Swim Club 23/24 Swim Season. On Friday 22nd March the team put on their party clothes and headed to Samford Stags for their Club Season Awards Night, photographed by the talented Joep Buijs.

The club is unique to have so many volunteers, committee members, supportive senior swimmers and amazing parents. The night kicked off with multiple thank yous to those families who contribute each week in big and small ways to make sure the swimmers are on the blocks every Friday night and at away meets.

It takes courage to climb onto the blocks every week and race against your personal best times and your swimming competitors.

Every swimmer in the club deserves recognition for that and they should be proud.

Our club has also been so fortunate to have so many generous sponsors of which

Samford Bowls Club Competitions. We’ve had a break from the BDBA competitions over the Easter holidays but we’re now back into the finals run. The Ladies Autumn Pennant’s semi-finals will be played at Toombul Bowls Club on 12th April. Samford Powerful Owls will play the Toombul Kookaburras for a finals position at Everton Park Bowls Club on 19th April.

Round 8 of the K M Smith Cup was played at Samford against Everton Park who are first on the ladder of Pool A. We managed to have wins in the Pairs and Fours but lost in the Triples. Samford is now 2nd on the ladder of Pool A. Our next game, round 9, will be played against Kallangur Reds at Kallangur on their grass greens. Round 10 will be against Caboolture Lakes Blue at Samford, giving us the home advantage playing on our carpet greens.

Winter Pennants. Members are now being asked to nominate for these competitions.

The ladies will be competing in the midweek division 3 plus a division 2 Saturday morning. Our men will have a division 2 plus a lower division yet to be decided.

Next year we are hoping to have a mixed ladies and men’s team.

President’s at Home Day will be held on Monday 27th May, sponsored by Belle Property. Our Ladies President Lesley Maher, invites bowlers from all bowls clubs to join her for a day of fun, fellowship and frivolity with lots of prizes to be won. The day will commence at 9am with morning tea followed by a game of bowls (4’s) then lunch. Gentlemen are allowed to play, but the ladies are to play Skip.

A Special General Meeting will be held at the Bowls Clubhouse on Sunday 7th April at 10am. All members are welcome to attend. The aim is to discuss options for undertaking much needed restoration work

Lawn Bowls is a game of skill and tactics based on Laws of the sport of Bowls and an old fashion term called Etiquette. Dennis O’Toole (Qld State Coach) has an article in the Queensland Bowler magazine (February 2024) detailing some of the etiquette that all bowlers are expected to abide by. Bowls is a sport that encourages social interaction and friendship. Individuals treat one another the way they expect to be treated. “The springs on the Reformer offer us feedback” these help us engage certain muscles to make the carriage move. On the Mat we must discover that feedback from our Core engagement and resist against gravity, this takes deeper focus and concentration.

The movement of the carriage gives us the “false feeling we are moving in space” whilst focused on our leg, arm or torso movements. On the Mat we are creating the movement in space especially when we do balance or standing work.

“We all love a boundary to push against” and the Reformer is perfect for providing this. Unfortunately it is this boundary that can cause discomfort to clients after their sessions.

Samford’s very own Emily Odgers has been nominated as a Miss Universe Australia (MUA) 2024 state finalist. Emily is a current member of SEG and Samford Pony Club, and a volunteer at RDA. She has lived in Samford for the past 8 years, working at local businesses, babysitting and enjoying this beautiful Samford Valley lifestyle which enables her involvement with horses.

In March, Elsa and her family attended the 2024 Show Horse Council of Australasia, Grand National Saddle Horse & Rider Championships held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Elsa and her pony degree at USC, as well as a model with Chic Management Brisbane, which is where she was approached by MUA last year to apply. Having completed the application, Emily didn’t have any expectation that she would get in, so it was a wonderful surprise when she was announced as a state finalist.

If successful on 7th April, Emily could progress through to the national finals.

Emily has chosen Toybox Australia as her charity. This children’s charity supports disadvantage and sick children around Australia by purchasing vital, industry leading equipment, funds exciting distractions from treatments, provides funding to families so they can support their sick child appropriately and funds research.

Family Car Tax Labor’s attempts to put its vehicle efficiency policy into reverse does nothing to stop price rises for Australia’s most popular vehicles because of its tax on existing models. The minor changes announced in March will not provide relief from Labor’s family car tax that is still aimed squarely at the country’s top selling vehicles. The Coalition instead stands firmly with families, farmers, tradies, and small business owners who will be forced to pay more for new cars after the next election.

HARRY NEEDS A SPONSOR S a m f o r d R DA’s newest herd member, Harry (pictured), is looking for a sponsor. Harry joined the herd at the RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds last month after an extensive trial to ensure his suitability. He passed with flying colours and is now working in the RDA program providing riding-based therapies to support adults and children with a disability.

The former showring and show jumping horse takes everything in his stride – wind, noises, games on horseback, and volunteers walking close beside him to support his rider. He is affectionately referred to as ‘Harry Spotter’ because of his distinctive white ‘Birdcatcher spots’ along his sides.

Samford RDA is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on horse sponsorships to help meet the cost of horse feed and veterinary care.

Apart from Harry, all horses at the centre are currently sponsored by local representatives, community groups and businesses. The volunteer group thanks Federal Member Peter Dutton, State Member Nikki Boyd, Cr Cath Tonks and Cr Darren Grimwade from City of Moreton Bay, Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank), Airforce Pty Ltd and Pine Rivers NFP Accountant & NDIS Plan Management. BOOK REVIEWS BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM Kate Atkinson In 1995, when Behind The Scenes At The Museum was first published, it was touted as a family saga of Yorkshire working class life, another coming of age story — ho hum, why would I read that?

Then it took out the Whitebread ahead of Salman Rushdie so I read it and found it was something more. Now it’s one of my favourite re-reads.

Every time I immerse myself in it, I find a compelling new think.

Ruby, youngest in the family, is a sort of omnipresent first-person narrator. In the opening paragraphs of this tragi-comedy, Ruby interprets her mother’s dreams shortly after her conception. Her cheeky commentary on life is cynically gripping.

She knows her father’s whereabouts at the time of her birth. She uses footnotes (yes, in a fiction work) to recount her greatgrandmother’s elopement with a French photographer more than half a century before her entry into the world and the troubles her grandmother faced during the First World War. But her insights fail with her inability to unravel her greatest secret, a mystery that haunts her and the reader all the way through the book, even though the carefully planted clues are there.

The writing style takes a while to get used to, but please persevere. It’s a flick-back-and check plot, crammed with detail that a firsttime reader can easily miss, like the complex intergenerational ties. That doesn’t mean a first-time reader won’t have the reading light on until two in the morning. The themes explore intergenerational trauma, the complexities of parenting, the guilts children carry, the impact of an untimely death of a child, and the compulsion for some women to enter unhappy marriages.

In the end it is my belief words are the only things that can construct a world that makes sense.

PROPHET SONG Paul Lynch Imagine a rightwing political party seizing total control in response to trade unionists lobbying for increased wages. Imagine a country slipping into totalitarianism as civil liberties erode and civil war breaks out. Imagine people not realising their freedoms have been obliterated until it’s too late.

“All your life you’ve been asleep, all of us sleeping and now the great waking begins.”

Lynch’s Man Booker-winning Prophet Song, describes a dystopian nightmare in which the Stack family endure the horrors of the “great waking” in the Republic of Ireland, but his imagined grim reality rings true for war-torn countries, past, present and future, where refugees take to the sea to escape their country’s persecutions, as

the injustices of the political regime and the growing business in bribery strikes the core of inhumanity.

The book’s style is a breathless, claustrophobic fear captured without paragraph breaks or recognition of direct speech. It begins in Dublin where Eilish Stack’s husband Larry, a senior trade unionist, disappeared, leaving her to make impossible decisions to protect her family.

How can she leave her demented father, even though he, in his brief moments of awareness, implores her to escape with her children? Has she the fortitude to run across no man’s land to see her injured son at a hospital, risking execution by snipers shooting at civilians? Can she face a morgue of nameless bodies to find a truth?

Through projecting the reader into the fraught life of Eilish, Lynch reveals a plausible, modern-day descent into the fascism which festers slowly, then suddenly poisons the society Eilish knows. The reader is entrapped in her swelling panic. It’s a hard but necessary read. From the opening sentence, “The night has come and she has not heard the knocking,” you begin to live Eilish’s nightmare.

If there was ever a crucial book for our times, Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song is it.
