Unfortunately, we are unable to proceed with submissions to the grant program for FY2022, however, there is always next financial year.

Discussions are ongoing with NBN Co. and MBRC on how we - as a community - can best formulate a strategic plan on tackling digital inclusion across remaining under-served 4520 suburbs. Representatives from the above suburbs will be involved in group discussions and planning steps required for the next phase.

In the months ahead, we want all 4520 residents to remember one thing. Previous and ongoing efforts to obtain true broadband and improved mobile phone services in the area was, and continues to be, fought by residents from the community for the benefit of the community. All successful outcomes are due to the work and backing of local residents and we’d like to thank all of you who have supported us so far.

We look forward to your ongoing support, as together we can make meaningful change for everyone in our community who still has sub-standard communications access.

It is frankly unacceptable that thousands of community members who live within 30km of the CBD don’t have a usable internet service or can’t make a mobile phone call in 2022.

As we kick off 2022, it’s heart-warming to see residents across Samford Valley, Highvale, Wights Mountain and Camp Mountain enjoying the fruits of our hard fought efforts.

Over the course of the last 6 months, NBN Co. has deployed almost all remaining fibre to the curb or premises connections in these suburbs, nearing completion of this phase of the local rollout. Recipients of fibre to the curb are reporting 100mbit speeds and fibre to the premises residents are revelling in 900+mbit speeds - a world away from 1 to 12mbit ADSL speeds.

For locals still patiently waiting, particularly in Camp Mountain, it’s only a matter of time for your connection to be completed. Rest assured; it will happen.

Behind the scenes, our attention has been focused on other areas currently serviced by satellite and fixed wireless. Our thanks to residents in Cedar Creek, Mt Glorious, Mt Nebo, Mt Samson and Clear Mountain who successfully submitted community registrations on the Federal Government Regional Connectivity Program noticeboard over the Christmas break. 2022 DICKSON AWARDS The 2022 Australia Day Dickson Awards have seen outstanding local residents rewarded for their hard work and dedication to our community and our country.

Presented by Hon Peter Dutton MP, many local residents were again amongst the list of wonderful individuals who are acheiving great things for themselves and their community. We congratulate them and look forward to sharing more about them in coming editions.

DICKSON VOLUNTEER AWARD There were two local recipients in this category: Diane Bell, a hardworking member of the Dayboro community, is described by other members as the “soul of the Dayboro Pony Club over the last 15 years”. Diane served as the uniform officer, committee chairperson, instructor, secretary, nominations officer and more. Teaching, encouraging, and cheering on members, she organised many events over the years including fortnightly musters for children to come and learn.

Joan Cullen from Samford Valley has been a member of the Samford Tennis Club for over 25 years and served as Treasurer on the committee for 18 years. In 2010 Joan was awarded life membership – one of only four people in history to receive this award.

As Treasurer, Joan was involved in all aspects of managing the finances of the club including invoicing, bookkeeping and record keeping. An enormous task for a volunteer. Joan has also been a Samford Farmers Hall volunteer as both a coordinator of the hall and secretary.

INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH AWARD Harry Van Der Ark of Cedar Creek should be familiar to our readers, as we let you know about his amazing achievements as the organiser of a successful TEDx at Hillbrook Anglican School last year.

Academically, Harry (pictured below) has achieved an SAT result of 1550 which is in the 99th percentile. He founded the Hillbrook Science Club and was one of only two students in 2021 awarded the prestigious Archbishop’s Badge for attaining

the Chairperson of the School Board Award in every semester during 6 years at Hillbrook.

Harry is working towards his dream of studying at an Ivy League University, starting the extremely arduous enrolment process 3 years ago. We have some exciting news to share about Harry’s journey in the next edition.

IAN ‘WATTO’ WATSON GREAT MATE AWARD Armstrong Creek resident Glen Friedrich received this award through his loyalty, friendship and willingness to lend a hand to anybody in need; in the spirit of the late Ian ‘Watto’ Watson. Glen has been involved for many years in the Dayboro Men’s Shed - a friend to all, answering questions, recruiting new members, secretary duties and lots of work done behind the scenes – as well as the Dayboro RSL, assisting many local veterans in the community. Glen is described as “a fine example of the type of key people that communities need if they are to prosper.”

YOUNG SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR Outstanding gymnast Toby Armstrong from Clear Mountain was the worthy recipient of this award. Last year we let you know about Toby’s rise through the ranks of this elite sport. Split into 10 levels, Toby (pictured below with his family) is a level 7 gymnast nearing the elite category.

After winning both the Regional and State Championships in 2021, Toby was selected to compete at the National Championships.

Competing in the Open Level 7 Category, he beat 39 of the best gymnasts from around the country to win the nationwide title. In

addition to this, he won gold in the Vault and silver on the Parallel Bars. We can’t wait to see what Toby achieves in the future.

COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR This award was presented to the combined Lions Clubs of Albany Creek, Dayboro, Golden Valley Keperra, Kallangur Pine Rivers, Samford and Warner.

Collectively, these clubs have undertaken projects right across our region ranging from environmental care through planting or weeding at local parks to assisting those with disabilities receive equipment or transport to improve their life.

Well known for supporting those in need, these community clubs have also contributed to the Campaign 100 initiative to rid the world of preventable blindness, assist youth, provide disaster relief and support humanitarian efforts and help those suffering diabetes amongst other things.

There are many hours spent volunteering, organising events and fundraisers, and assisting people in need.

The Dickson Citizen of the Year was awarded to John Hardgrave for his dedication to our country and our community.

Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton congratulated all the awardees. “Thank you to all nominees and awardees for everything you do to make our community a better place.”

LOCAL NEWS SAMFORD AVENUE OF HONOUR WAR ANIMAL MEMORIAL OPENING SOON As we reported in the last edition, thanks to the incredible generosity of Samford organisations and government, the Samford Avenue of Honour War Animal Memorial is underway with an anticipated opening on 24 February 2022. This memorial represents stage 7 of Samford’s landmark Avenue of Honour.

Many may not know that over 16 million animals were used for transport, communication and companionship in the First World War, which is why stage 7 is a significant addition. In 2019, Australia joined with the United Kingdom, New Zealand and others in recognising war animals with a National Day of Commemoration. Australia’s first National Day for War Animals was 24 February 2019.

In 1914, large cavalry forces were used widely during the war. Horse and camelmounted troops were used in the desert campaigns throughout the war, but on the Western Front, new weapons like the machine gun made cavalry charges

increasingly difficult. Nonetheless, animals remained a critical part of the war effort.

Horses, donkeys, mules and camels carried food, water, ammunition and medical supplies to men at the front, and dogs and pigeons also carried messages. Canaries were used to detect poisonous gas, and cats and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches. In recent times Explosive Detection Dogs (EDDs) have been employed in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan all with great success.

The memorial is being constructed opposite the main memorial with the design theme incorporating the existing design in its integrated artwork elements, thanks to the exceptional talent and hard work of our artisan Mr Jamie Maclean.

The memorial will portray the five animals recognised by the Australian War Memorial – the Donkey/Mule, Camel, Pigeon, Horse and Dog and will facilitate spectators’ understanding of the project and the underpinning values of animals and humans.

The War Animal Memorial is made of cast concrete with a stone finish and incorporates relief-carved bronze, signage and plaques. The 20 columns representing each of the Samford Fallen are incorporated

in the design. Five panels with four up-lit columns will be in keeping with existing Avenue lighting. The public will be able to purchase and place purple poppies into designated locations on the memorial as well.

Sincere thanks go to the Queensland Government, Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association, Samford Community Bank (Bendigo Bank), Brisbane North District RSL, Cr Darren Grimwade, Wes Mortensen and the Moreton Bay Regional Council who have all played a significant role in making stage 7 possible.

LOCAL NEWS Community support keeps local businesses COVID-resilient COVID-19 has made it tough for small businesses in recent years, with the latest Omicron wave and changed government regulations complicating operations once again.

Elyne Osborne from the local handmade collective, Makers on Main, has experienced some downturns due to people staying at home more.

“We’ve had to close the doors on a couple of occasions and this obviously impacted sales,” she said.

“We also run a variety of classes, and the attendance at these will be impacted as people contract COVID. We will have to reduce numbers in each class to make sure we stay within the government guidelines,” she said.

Samford physiotherapy practice, The Movement Team, has been concerned about reduced consultations due to clients unsure about attending the clinic.

“We have noticed a reduction in new appointments and an increase in unavoidable cancellations due to clients having symptoms, having to isolate or getting tested,” Practice Manager, Sharn Freier said. “It is our responsibility to adhere to current guidelines and be diligent with cleaning to ensure the safety of both staff and clients. We want our clients to feel safe and comfortable when they attend our clinic,” she said.

“Many of our major client’s businesses are also suffering and accordingly their demand for our services is significantly reduced. With many businesses still feeling the effects of the last two years, it makes business nervous with every outbreak, so the ebb and flow of profitability is unpredictable,” she said.

However, support from the local community has been pivotal in keeping business doors open through the tough times.

“We are fortunate that all of our clients have been extremely supportive and adhere to current guidelines regarding COVID, including not attending appointments if they are feeling unwell and wearing masks to attend the clinic,” Sharn from The Movement Team said.

Jo from Samford Design and Print agrees that there is an overall sense of community support for local businesses.

“Many of my customers, some of whom have also been affected significantly by the pandemic fallout, are sympathetic to its effects on my business and continue to support us as much as possible,” Jo said.

“The community has also responded positively by supporting local businesses, possibly in response to the Samford Chamber of Commerce’s “Support Local” campaign and in recognition of the benefit there is in having local access to the products and services many of the small businesses in the Valley provide,” she said.

Makers on Main is also grateful to the community for backing creative endeavours.

“We have some very loyal customers who always seek us out to buy that special gift including custom made items. Because our products are mostly made by local artisans, there is a feeling of community support,” Elyne said. “And a big shout out to our fabulous landlord. Without his support we wouldn’t be operating.”

One local sporting team scored big in a recent round of the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) grant funding, to create more opportunities for a new generation of Goal Attacks. The Samford Netball Club offers the community a chance to join a netball team and has used SDPPA grant funds to help kids in particular to get active.

Without as much as a step offside, the Samford Netball Club has set its sights on a bright future.

“Current development plans for the Club include updating the court lighting, fencing around the courts to increase safety, improving the car parking facilities and building new courts. Weather-proofing the courts is on the roadmap as well. We are looking for further grants and sponsorship over the next couple of years to assist us in achieving these plans.”

THE POWER OF GIVING AND RECEIVING The SSN is all about community supporting community. Currently, the organisation receives support from many community members either through their volunteer work, financial donations or through business donations. Every donation that is made is received with much gratitude as it means that the organisation can continue to provide support to the community.

Right now, the Management Committee are blown away by the delightful and enthusiastic efforts of Thomas and Riley who are participating in a #paperclipchallenge.

The idea of the challenge is to trade up from a paperclip without buying anything over a 30-day period, then the final item is sold.

During their #paperclipchallenge the boys were gifted a 2002 signed Broncos Jersey.

As this jersey was gifted rather than traded, they will be auctioning the framed jersey instead of continuing the trading. As of the 26 January, the bid is at $350 and bidding will continue until 5pm Sunday 6 February.

Thank you to all of the people that have contributed to date.

SSN President Barbara Kienast met up with the boys to thank them for their efforts and asked them what they enjoyed most. “We love the excitement of seeing items traded and then going and collecting

the items from people and helping our community,” they said.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Thomas and Riley (and Bronwyn) for their enthusiasm and generosity and feel very blessed to be the recipients of this generosity.

We would also like to thank the continued generosity of some local business’s - Margo Collens from Samford Fruit and Veg who donates produce to the SSN weekly, Flametree Financial for their donation of two Square’s that enables the SSN to receive payments via card transaction, and not to forget Jason Delisser when financial services are needed - there are of course

many others!

The SSN consists of local unpaid volunteers (run by a volunteer Management Committee) and it does rely on the generosity that comes from many sources to continue to offer local support.

QCWA Samford Technology wins the day! Covid 19 sent us to our computers to meet and that’s just what we did at our January meeting, with many members learning how to tackle the online video link up. We can proudly say this pandemic did not deter this meeting from taking place, with about 15 members joining online - it was refreshing to see all the faces on our screens. Well done Samford members!

SAMFORD MUSEUM UPDATE Samford Museum SCHOOL DAYS OF OLD The delayed 2022 school year has some similarities to 1932. Then, children under 10 years were debarred from attending owing to the prevailing epidemic of Infantile Paralysis (polio). By February 24, 1932 the IP Campaign Committee decided that public schools should remain closed to children under 12 until 14 March.

1932 was also Samford School’s 60th anniversary. During the 1972 centenary celebrations, 1930s teacher Mr Karoll recorded: “One of the outstanding incidents I remember about the 60th birthday celebrations in 1932 was the hilarious laughter of the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson and the Director of Education, Mr B J McKenna when they were reading one of the school’s earliest Corporal Punishment Registers.”

2022 marks 150 years of primary school education at Samford. The curriculum has changed greatly and so has getting to school.

A 1905 pupil recalled not remembering starting school but remembering well the

long walk through the scrub and along dirt tracks. A railway worker’s son attended Samford School in 1918 while the line to Samford was being constructed. The family moved to Samsonvale, and he travelled back to Samford by train.

He was on the train that derailed just beyond Samford, May 13, 1919.

He and other children were taken home on a pumper. Floods often made getting to school difficult, if at all. Some crossed the flooded river on a flying fox along with the milk cans and were then driven to school in the milk truck.

At Bunya, the school year was delayed on occasion when, for reasons unknown, a teacher had not arrived. Children were known to shimmy up the wall to look through the window to see the time on the clock before heading home. The clock had stopped, having not been wound for six weeks.

SAVE THE DATE: 14 & 15 May Yes, you read it right – TWO DAYS! We were bombarded with positive feedback last year, and the number one request was to open the gardens over two days. Visitors said they would appreciate more time to see the gardens and many of them said they would like to stay overnight and make it a weekend. So…we listened.

If you are new to Samford, or perhaps you missed it last year, (how is that possible?), here is a little background to bring you up to speed. The Samford Edible Garden Trail is a community effort and it came together on the back of a lot of goodwill and generous spirit from everybody involved (including the people who came along on the day).

It is a not-for-profit event with the ticket sales distributed back into our community (there are whispers of a community garden coming…watch this space).

We started with three intentions for the Trail: 1. To inspire more people to grow food in their backyard; 2. To connect with and support our local growers; and 3. To let people outside Samford know that as a region we value locally grown produce, plate to paddock experiences, and sustainability.

We see the Open Day Weekend as an opportunity for the Samford Community to shine and local businesses to prosper. It is a volunteer effort held together by shared values and is dependent on community involvement. If you would like to see the weekend flourish (and possibly make it an annual event) please get involved in one of these ways: • Do you have a veggie patch or an orchard tucked away behind the house that you would be prepared to open to visitors for either Sat/Sun or both days? Division 11 Council Report Renewal Works at Showgrounds Works will be commencing this month on the Judges Kiosk at Samford Showgrounds as part of Council’s Building Renewal Program. Structural improvements will be carried out to the sub floor support system, works to re-fix the decking, the stairs will be renewed and compliant balustrading battens will be installed. These improvements are expected to take around ten weeks to complete and are necessary to ensure the safety of everyone using the building. There will be no access to the building while the works are taking place and if you are on the grounds, please take notice of any restrictions to access and signage that is in place.

GET INVOLVED SPIDER SURVEY 12 FEBRUARY/ BUSHCARE TO RESUME 13 FEBRUARY On the hot sultry morning of 17 January, our birdwatchers recorded 59 species during the monthly survey. On arrival there were large numbers of Welcome Swallows, Whitebreasted Woodswallows and Fairy Martins hawking low over the soccer fields and cow paddocks, with White-throated Needletails higher up.

We again heard Pale-vented Bush-hen somewhere along the riverbank below the Bowls Club. Good numbers of small birds persisted in the revegetated areas near the picnic site, including Rufous Fantail.

Interesting flyovers included 3 each of White-headed Pigeon and Great Cormorant.

Samford Bowls Club Australia Day: Due to COVID 19 being all around us, we decided to do an in-house celebration with members and household members only. Our morning got underway with the fun SPIDER game. Our Social Club ladies have a fun sense of humour as the prize for being closest to the Spider was a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kit and rolls of toilet paper for the touchers - very sort after items in these pandemic times!

Unfortunately, the rain that was forecast as showers turned into a downpour forcing us into the club for our Aussie style morning tea of Lamingtons, Vegemite Scrolls, Anzac Biscuits, Aussie Chocolates and Australian grown fruit. We may have been washed off the Green but sometimes it is nice to have the time to relax with likeminded friends over a cuppa. A different but an enjoyable Australia Day at the bowls club. Alex Gow competition: A Brisbane District Bowls competition commencing 5th February. Ten clubs will play home and

away games for seven weeks followed by the finals. This competition gives members a chance to play at different clubs on different playing surfaces in teams of Pairs and Triples.

Tyrepower Everton Hills Cup competition: Commencing 5th February. This is a competition for the more experienced bowler. Six weeks of home and away games then finals.

Ladies Autumn Pennant competition: A Brisbane District competition, commencing Friday 25th February. Two Bowls Triples played by a side comprising three teams. This is a fast game of 2 sets of nine ends with a one end tie-breaker if required. Our ladies travel to different clubs meeting other bowlers that they then get to play with on other social inter club days. This is a great way to make friends with bowlers they would not have had the opportunity to meet.

Samford Area Mens Shed There’s no way we can ignore what’s happening all around us. Since the Queensland/New South Wales border was opened, Covid has come to our State in previously unheard of numbers.

The vast majority of the population have either contracted Covid-19 and its variant Omicron, or have been in close contact with someone who has. Sadly, there are people with Covid being admitted to hospital and even sadder is the number of people who have lost their lives due to the pandemic.

Like most businesses, clubs, cafés and shops, Samford Area Men’s Shed (aka SAMS) had had to put vigorous practices in place in order to not only protect SAMS members and their families, but also the wider community. This has been particularly critical for SAMS because most of the men are of an age where the dangers of contracting Covid could be most dire.

Despite this, the men have not been idle. For instance: the art group may have stopped for the moment but members such as Dennis Arnold have still been busy turning their imagination into impressive works of art for all to enjoy. In the meantime, SAMS Chairman Neil Krosch and the other

DRINK BEER, RUN, REPEAT The 5th annual Dayboro Lions Australia Day International Beer Mile was on again at the Cowboys footy grounds, kicking off at the early hour of 8:30am to beat the heat and as it happened, the continuous downpour for the rest of the day. Each entrant was signed in by 8:20am, with a Sober Bob or minder and relevant health issues listed.

This event is not for the faint hearted as competitors are challenged to run and speed drink between laps, in accordance with international event rules. Each competitor drinks four cans or bottles of beer and runs four laps around a standard 400m running track (start with chugging a beer, then run a lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap finish). Beers must be consumed before each lap begins and results are submitted to the official international website.

The main race was followed by familybased, shorter, three-legged and piggyback races, with some competitors confused about who should piggyback who!

To cap it off, $84 was donated to go towards changing room upgrades for the new female footy team. Sounds like Dayboro Lions have a great tradition going!

BEGINNER COURSES Courses for people who wish to try archery are beginning for the 2022 year at the Samford Valley Target Archers grounds in February. To accommodate the large number of enquiries about archery which occurred during 2021, the club has decided to trial increasing the numbers taken into each course from 18 to 24. Beginner courses are held on the first Saturday of each month, February to November each year.

Brisbane in the future, it is not impossible that there could be an archer starting these courses who goes on to be a member of the Australian Olympic team.

For those who do not wish to put in that much work, Target Archery is still a great sport for just about everybody from young to old, totally fit to some disability to consider, and from the competitive to the purely social member.

The Samford club is beginning preparations to host the Archery Australia’s National Target Archery Tournament in September/October of this year, when it is estimated some 200 archers and accompanying people will come from around the nation and possible from overseas.

Samford Valley Markets February 12th Weather allowing, the February Markets will go ahead. There has been plenty of interest from stall holders. The parish run stalls will not be operating (morning teas, sausage sizzle and jumble stall) and we won’t be placing stalls inside the hall.

OUT & ABOUT Local Golfers Raise a Record $100,000 At the end of last year, The Village Pump shared the story of The Keperra Golf Club’s ambitious shot at raising $80,000 for the Cancer Council by taking part in the Longest Day golfing event. The team teed off at sunrise on the longest day in December, chipping their way around 72 rounds of golf to finish in just over 12 hours.

Donations kept flowing on the day, taking the club up to $91,000. As the shoulders grew sore, club President Rod Rhodes pledged to top up the donations to an even $100,000 lifting Team Keperra to the top of the national donation leader board.

Local members Chrissy Booth and Allison Maguire were part of the squad that had a lot of laughs along the way while raising money for a serious cause.

“Some highlights of the day were seeing players turn up at 4.30 in the morning with a smile on their face in anticipation of the challenge ahead,” Allison said. “The only hole in one made on the day was by Alana Griffiths and hearing the cheers across the fairway when it happened was inspiring for us all,” she said.

of 24. “Karen, who drove the food and drinks cart, dispensed on-the-spot fines for sun safety breaches, offered Va s e l i n e a n d Band-Aid services for chafing and blisters, and put a little toy toilet on one of our ladies tees in case of emergency.”

“We are so proud of the team at Keperra for their amazing efforts in raising $100,000.

Your unwavering support of campaigns like The Longest Day brings us closer to a future free from the burden of cancer.”

To raise their record-breaking amount, players not only had to work on their putting skills, but also had to stretch themselves personally.

“I raised nearly $4,000, something I have never done before, and it took me out of my comfort zone a bit asking friends, family and work colleagues for donations,” Allison said.

Allison has been a member at Keperra Golf Club for 14 years and appreciates the community feel she experiences there. “I feel that the Club is committed to ensuring its members are looked after in terms of equal opportunity for men and women to play golf together every day,” she said.

“I think Brisbane is very lucky to have a 27 hole golf course so close to the city that is welcoming and affordable.”

While this was Team Keperra’s maiden Longest Day event, their efforts were far from green. Congratulations on a remarkable achievement!

For local students, it is an exciting time with the school year just beginning. A special mention goes to those students entering Year 12 for their final year or beginning their schooling in Prep, I wish you the best of luck and every success.

While it has been a difficult few months living with COVID, our high vaccination rates have helped protect many Australians from serious illness or hospitalisation. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the latest jobs figures demonstrate the strength and resilience of the Australian economy and how the government’s response has saved lives and livelihoods. Our unemployment rate nationally is now down to 4.2% - the lowest it has been since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. 65,000 jobs were created in the month of December and two thirds of these are full time positions.

SurePact Visit Recently I had the pleasure of visiting SurePact, a start-up founded and led by Wights Mountain resident Megan Avard.

Many of you will know Megan and how dynamic and inspiring she is.

SurePact is doing some great things and has developed software solutions to help make project management and grant tracking easier. No more tracking on messy spreadsheets!

The Morrison Government has supported their growth through a Boosting Female Founders Grant to help Megan and the team develop a new product which is almost ready to hit the market. This will help SurePact create more jobs and opportunities.

Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations On 21 January 2022, the Foreign Minister Marise Payne and I hosted Foreign Secretary Truss and Defence Secretary Wallace in Sydney for the Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN). This was the first meeting of AUKMIN since the COVID-19 pandemic. Our relationship with the UK is longstanding and we held important discussions regarding our shared commitment to sovereignty, resilience and prosperity for the Indo-Pacific.

Samford RDA’s 2022 program starts this month with volunteer inductions now underway and lessons from 14 February. The centre has been in recess since early December to allow the RDA horses to be spelled in readiness for the new year. The break was also welcomed by volunteers who operate all aspects of the centre’s operation.

Places are still available at a volunteer induction tomorrow (Saturday February 5) from 9am to 11am at the RDA’s covered arena at Samford Showgrounds. Volunteers must be over 14 and do not require a knowledge of horses. Closed in shoes are a must.

Samford RDA thanks Samford and Brendale Community Bank - Bendigo Bank for its ongoing support as it restarts its program. As well as providing practical support since the centre was opened, they have once again sponsored RDA horse Paddington Bear (pictured).
