Long time owners of Gleam O’Dawn Rural Store, Alan and Louise Sivkoff, have decided to sling their last bale of hay and retire between the valley and Macleay Island.
“We arrived with our children Fiona, Armonde and Marcus in Samford 27 years ago to start what for us was an almighty leap into the unknown. Neither of us had any hands on experience at running a retail store and business and with three young kids it was quite daunting,” said Alan.
However, despite some early set backs, the family business persevered and grew into the business we know and love today. Along the way, new sheds, concreted customer car parking and improved retail facilities were built, providing improved services and a pleasant customer experience.
Over the last 27 years, enduring friendships with Samford Valley and surrounding districts residents have been built.
“In fact, we still have customers who have been with Gleam O’Dawn since the very early days when Clem and Val Gillies owned the business,” said Alan.
“Samford has been fantastic. Where else in a capital city will you have such an attractive rural environment within 20kms of the CBD.”
Louise and Alan are proud of their achievements, particularly with the business support of local riding groups, schools, football clubs and other fundraising ventures. They are so appreciative of the staff, majority of which are Samford locals or nearby. “In particular, a big thank you
to John McClenaghan who has been with us for 15 years.”
The store has been purchased by Brookies Rural Traders, a leading family owned and local provider of produce, pet, hardware and saddlery services in Brookfield. They will take over from 7th August 2023.
“Brookies Rural Traders has a longstanding commitment to supporting acreage dwellers and have a strong focus on customer satisfaction and choice, with a comprehensive range of products,” Alan said.
CEO of Brookies Rural Traders, Damien Effeney said that under the new ownership, Gleam O’Dawn will continue to operate with the current team of employees with the added benefits of Brookies Rural Traders extensive resource and marketing expertise.
“We want to assure all of Gleam O’Dawn’s valued customers that the acquisition by Brookies Traders will only strengthen our commitment to providing the highest quality products for your animals and your property,” he said.
Gleam O’Dawn were one of the original advertisers of this newspaper back in 1977. We are very grateful for their support over the years. We wish Alan and Louise all the best as they put their feet up and enjoy the sleep ins. Thank you - we will miss your friendly, knowledgeable service.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor
Many Samford residents would have been subjected to Sleep Torture when Brisbane Airport Corporation and Air Services Australia sent aircraft noise across our valley during the night of 17/18 July. Hourly flight noise amplified by our valley topography and rain clouds manifested in seriously disturbed sleep for those affected. We would all have been ineffective at school and work the next day.
Air Services continues to disregard the health impacts of increasing aircraft noise and has been ineffective at both handling complaints and managing their post implementation review. Air Services engineers have admitted they overflew our valley because it looked like green space on their maps. Few Air Services staff could even point to Samford Valley on their maps at the most recent community consultation event in Samford.
Infrastructure Minister Catherine King has told Brisbane and surrounds to suck it up but she looks after her own electorate in every way. The Prime Minister fought for an airport curfew for his electorate years ago but ignores the same issue we face with Brisbane Airport. The Labor Premier is proairport and her government has corporate shares in the airport. The Liberal party seems to be looking the other way and hoping the problem goes away.
With flight paths converging over Samford Valley and no acceptable alternative being put forward to reduce noise and tank water pollution in our lovely valley, now is the time to let the politicians and Air Services know how much this shift to making Brisbane an “aerotropolis” is adversely impacting on our lives and our health. There is a state election around the corner and many seats could yet be lost over this issue.

A WORTHY EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
There’s a certain kind of magic about someone who loves their job as much as Hannah Worthy does, making it no surprise that the General Manager of The Store of Requirement took out the Employee of the Year Award at the 2023 Moreton Bay Business and Innovation Awards.
The Awards celebrates outstanding achievements of businesses and individuals throughout the whole Moreton Bay region, with the Employee of the Year Award recognising an individual for their extraordinary professional achievement and contribution to their organisation.
“I feel blessed and humbled to win Employee of the Year. There were some amazing and inspiring people also nominated for the award and it makes me very proud to be a part of it,” Hannah said.
“I have the best job in the world. I get to share my passion for all things Harry Potter with fellow enthusiasts.”
Hannah has been part of the Store of Requirement story for more than four years. In her role as General Manager, she runs the physical shop as well as the online store and warehouse, but ensuring strong relationships with her staff and customers is where she particularly shines.
“Within my role I get to have hands on communication with my staff and understand their strengths and ensure they are reaching their goals and full potential. We are a family run business and sharing our passion for all things magical and involving the community is our main priority,” she said.
“I also have the opportunity to continue to learn and be part of programs such as EnAbled; an initiative with Spinal Life and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) to encourage businesses to become more inclusive.”
Through MBRIT, Hannah has participated in events including First Nations people education and customer service programs that have supported company growth. The Samford community has been welcoming and encouraging to this magical shop which Hannah and her team continue to appreciate.
“We engage with many other local businesses and work harmoniously with local suppliers and the community,” Hannah said. “Being able to encourage people to visit Samford and bring tourism and enrich the economy in the area is a wonderful opportunity that we embrace.”
Though the Harry Potter book series has come to an end, the demand for sorting hats remains high, as future generations unveil the magic held within the covers of each of these books. A magic that Hannah and her team are keen to keep sharing.
“We are continuing to grow The Store of Requirement and bring the best service and magical experience to our customers,” Hannah said. “I am sharing this award with my team as they continue to show their dedication and passion for The Store of Requirement and our wonderful customers.”

Thanks for your support
Samford Show is over for another year, and Samford RDA would like to sincerely thank all show goers for their wonderful support.
Samford RDA’s show stand had a very successful weekend with funds raised through its $5 horse gear sale, a raffle comprising generous donations of goods and wine, and its association with the popular pig racing.
We sincerely thank our volunteers for giving up their weekend to promote the centre to the Samford and broader community. The stand generated a number of enquiries from potential participants and volunteers.
The Samford RDA program operates from the Showgrounds’ centre and is now back in full swing following the Show.

IS AIRCRAFT NOISE AFFECTING YOU?
It’s been a while and sadly, for people living under the current flightpath corridors, life has not improved.
AIRSERVCES COMING TO SAMFORD
Airservices Australia has announced their next round of “Drop In” style meetings for Phase Two of their Noise Action Plan for Brisbane. Samford’s Drop-In Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 24th August, between 3pm and 7pm at the Samford Community Hub, Mt Samson Road, Samford. This time around there will also be a couple of online sessions in August. You must register your interest to attend at a particular session, at a particular suburb that suits at https:// engage.airservicesaustralia.com
Airservices Noise Action Plan Phase Two topics for this next meeting are:
• Extending the use of (SODPROPS) Simultaneous Opposite Direction Runway Operation.
• Additional Segregated Operating Modes.
• Increased Operational Reporting.
• Options for night-time over land departures to the north.
This last option of night time over land departures to the north will have the biggest impact on the Samford area, whilst Airservices seek to share the noise over existing and new communities.
Airservices are commencing an advertising campaign and letterbox drop for the commencement of Phase 2. This will be a limited opportunity for you to have your say and give feedback.
If you are concerned or have any questions about the information that will arrive in your letterbox, please get in touch with us contactSAAAG@gmail.com
Special thanks to our Federal MP, Peter Dutton for sparing time in his busy schedule to meet with me on 10th July. Mr Dutton has made assurances he will meet with MP Bridget McKenzie, the Shadow Infrastructure Minister and also Infrastructure Minister Catherine King MP, to see if anything can be done to ease the suffering of Brisbane residents who live under flight paths. We await his response.
Special thanks to those Samford Area Aircraft Action Group volunteers who offered their precious time to work at the recent Samford Show. Also thank you to the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association for their support.

National Record for Local Swimmer
Bunya local Sam Short has continued to make a splash on a global scale after winning 400m gold at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Sam followed this up with a second in the 800m men’s freestyle, beating Grant Hackett’s Australian record in this event.

Short’s success bodes well for his performance at next year’s Paris Olympics, where we have no doubt he will do Australia (and Bunya) proud.

QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP
Following his successful performance at the South-East trials, Samford State School Year 6 student Dan Fowler was delighted to be selected as a member of the Brisbane Region Schools Orienteering Team who competed at the 2023 Queensland Schools Orienteering Championship. These championships were held in Miles and Gurulmundi State Forest in July.
young orienteers set to building a palatial stick cubby, proving that although rivalry is fierce out on course, their camaraderie is indisputable.
The 19-year-old former Prince of Peace student swam the fourth fastest time in men’s 800-metre freestyle history with a fast-paced 7:37.76. He was achingly close to Tunisia’s Ahmed Hafnaoui’s gold medal time of 7:37.00.
In winning the men’s 400m freestyle, Short joins the ranks of Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins as Australian event gold medalists, clocking the fourthfastest winning time ever of 3:40.68.
Sam capped off an epic meet by winning bronze in the men’s 1500m freestyle after leading the race early on. His time of 14:37:28 was a personal best, quicker than the fastest times of Kieran Perkins and Mack
Competing in three events in the Boys 13 and Under class, Dan placed 9th in the first event, a Sprint held on the Miles State School Campuses. The second event was a Hagaby (a 1-person relay) set in the Gurulmundi State Forest. Dan crossed the finish line in 11th place, he and his fellow competitors reporting varying degrees of concern in relation to a cattle stampede while they were out on course!
The Long Distance was the final event held on Sunday morning and was set in a different part of the Gurulmindi State Forest. Due to the staggered start times, competitors don’t necessarily know the final results until everyone in their age group has completed the course. While waiting, the
Once all 19 competitors had safely navigated their way through the course, it was clear that Dan had retained the winning time – he was incredibly proud of his achievement. “Seeing his resilience, determination and his love of the sport sustain him through the championship was a complete delight,” said proud mum Jo. Well done Dan!

Frog Hotel Project
Samford Community Kindergarten recently received a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant! Junior Landcare grants help to provide opportunities for children across Australia to get hands-on with nature and to take an active role in caring for local environments.
The aim of our project is to give the Laughing Tree Frogs, currently hiding in our outdoor play area, a safe place to live, reproduce and thrive in. We have made two frog friendly habitats, also known as Frog Hotels, in our garden. Our Grants Officer has cleverly dubbed these - Hotel De SCK and The Amphibi-Inn!
The children began the project by exploring different ideas about living things, their basic needs and how we can help to protect and care for them here at Samford Kindy.
They discovered that a suitable habitat for the Laughing Tree Frogs would need food, water to lay eggs in and swim in, and somewhere to hide. A design was chosen and construction began!
For our two Frog Hotels, we needed two very large pots that would hold water. PVC piping in various widths, was cut into different lengths by the children using handsaws. The Tree Frogs can climb the pipes and also hide safely inside.
Next, the children helped carry buckets of gravel and rocks which were poured into the large pot. The gravel helps to hold up the pipes in a vertical position and creates a flat surface for larger rocks and plants.
Native Water Plants were carefully arranged in the pot and then the pot was filled with water. Frogs prefer a damp environment, so the water levels will be checked and maintained. We will also be including solar garden lights in our Frog Hotels to attract bugs at night.
4th Saturday of the Month
August 26th 3pm-6pm
This hands on learning project provided opportunities for our Kindy children to take an active role in caring for local biodiversity and develop respect for the environment and a connection to Country.
We look forward to watching and listening for signs that the Laughing Tree Frogs have found a safe place to live in their Hotels!

Sport, Culture and Connection to Country
Combining First Nations’ culture, sport and community relationships, the inaugural Anglican Schools Commission Traditional Games Festival recently attracted 700 students from six schools, including Ferny Grove State High School as the only state school to participate.
Hosted by Hillbrook Anglican School, the all-day sport tournament allowed students to compete in two Indigenous ball games that were historically played throughout the state. Buroinjin was traditionally played by the Kabi Kabi people of Southern Queensland, and is a running-and-passing ball game like touch football. Keentan was originally played in the north west central Queensland, and is a running, passing and catching team game similar to netball.
Students from participating schools competed for both Keentan and Buroinjin trophies, with Fair Play trophies also awarded based on each team’s rating of their opposition’s team play, sportspersonship and on-field skills.
With a strong connection to Country, the games were played on the same fields the Turrbal, Yuggera and Ugarapul people played on over 6000 years ago. The day also showcased cultural heritage activities including traditional singing, dancing and arts and craft pursuits.
Participating Ferny Grove High School Students enjoyed the friendly competitive atmosphere and cultural learning that the day offered.
“They were really fun, we all had something in common and everyone was really nice. The game was fun and it was just really good. I really liked the turtle shell trophies that the Quandamooka artist created!” said Year 8 student Anna.
“It was pretty fun. It was a nice experience, it’s always good to get to know other people,” said Meelis in Year 8.
Sport and leisure games are deeply embedded within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, and traditional forms of the games were often played to enhance children’s everyday cultural learning. By having fun and learning about Indigenous cultures at the same time, the aim of the day was to give participating students a sense of connection and belonging.
Discussion is already underway for next
year’s festival which is set to feature even more participating schools. After this year’s successful event, Ferny Grove State High School is keen to take part again.

THANKS SAMFORD
The weather gods smiled on Samford for the weekend of the annual Show on 15 and 16 July. The result was yet another record crowd from all over South East Queensland and interstate enjoying the sublime weather and the amazing natural environment.
One visitor from Mexico was overwhelmed by the friendly atmosphere and the location.
Comments from visitors were universally complimentary – “your showground is a hidden gem – don’t let anything happen to it”; “brightest and best country show I’ve ever been to”; “why bother with the Ekka”; “my kids give it the thumbs up –they’re pretty picky so there’s no greater compliment”; “amazing variety of attractions and fun things to do”: “I’ve rarely seen so much quality horseflesh in one place at the one time”; “love the country feel”; “as a stallholder at many shows I’ve seen a lot, and this one takes the cake”; “the woodchop is terrific”; “I’ve never given cattle much thought but they’re actually
quite interesting” …. and so on. There were also positive suggestions for improvement and these will be taken on board by the volunteers on the Show Society Committee.
Every year is a learning experience. A highlight of 2023 has been the alliance with Samford State School to form a Junior Show Committee, giving the kids a role in what is essentially an event held for their enjoyment. Thanks Principal Nicole, deputy Principal John and P&C president Jo.
This year we also implemented new arrangements for parking which took cars off Showgrounds Drive, so queuing was virtually eliminated, much to the relief of drivers and local residents. The Samford
Rover Scouts did a fantastic job directing traffic. Discounted on-line ticket sales continue to grow and we also took great care to attract only high quality food outlets - the satisfied smiles of patrons in the Food Court told their own story.
Behind the scenes, the Committee was able to draw on the goodwill of local politicians and the practical support of sponsors in the business community such as Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank), Samford Garage, the SDPPA & The Village Pump and Samford Variety Store, to mention just a few. Sponsors benefit directly and indirectly through their connection with such an iconic community event. Other volunteer organisations such as the CWA, Rotary, Lions, the Stags and Rangers, the Rural Fire Brigade and others also contributed to what is fundamentally a celebration of the extraordinary place in which we live.
A PRIZE FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
All suggestions for improvement happily considered. Next year, for example, we will have another look at the location and functioning of the entry gates. You could win a family pass to the 2024 Samford Show (13 and 14 July) by providing comment. What did you love about Samford Show 2023? What would you like to see done differently in 2024? Complete the survey on our website www.samfordshowsociety. com.au by 16 August 2023 and you will be in the draw to win.
If you’re looking for a satisfying volunteer experience, please get in touch. Putting this together is a huge logistical exercise and the more help we have, the better it gets.

Samford Museum
Our day at the show was to make the public aware of who we are and what we do and to praise the dedicated volunteers. This was displayed with photos of past members. Paying homage to each and every one for their years of commitment, hard yakka and devotion to reach their goal. The volunteers were the instigators who toiled for years to get the museum “up and running”. You could say it was and still is a never-ending adventure. The women also worked tirelessly alongside the men as well as maintaining the substance of the working group.
Each year they witnessed a slow progression on the site. As old members passed, new people were welcomed with open arms. The diverse group of dedicated volunteers continued to showcase their individual skills, continuing to receive, restore, maintain and display a remarkable exhibit of local memorabilia from years gone by. The store holders chatted with many people interested in how the museum started and how it has flourished as the years go by.
Many visitors, including local school
children, travel across Brisbane to enjoy their educational tour and involvement, always so engrossed with all aspects of the exhibits. Comparing the “old ways” with “present day” way of life. It is very common for the children to arrive dressed in period clothes. Visitors travel by bus, groups from community centres, clubs, overseas visitors as well the general public, all anxious and curious to see our display. They are never disappointed and always write positive reviews.
We must show appreciation and thanks to the local community who supported us with
generous gifts and vouchers. Our members donated items of goodies and assisted us at the show. Saying thanks never appears to be adequate.
Maybe you would also like to join us and help to support our ongoing activities at the Samford Museum? New volunteers always welcomed and needed.

To our customers, suppliers, and the broader Samford community,
After more than 27 years of owning Gleam O’ Dawn Rural Store, it is now time for us to move on and enjoy some downtime and, as such, Louise and I have made the decision to retire.
To everyone that has come along with us on this journey we offer our most sincere thanks and gratitude for your most generous support.
From 7 August, new owners, Damien and Breanne Effeney of Brookies Rural Traders, will be taking over. All existing Gleam O’ Dawn staff will be retained in their current positions so the transition will be seamless. Once again, our sincerest thanks to one and all, and in particular, our long serving staff member, John McGlenaghan who has been with us for 15 years. We wish everyone in the community all the best, and, as we plan to stay on in the valley, we will see you around the village.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
Keeping the Character of our Townships
At the general Council meeting on July 19, I am pleased to say that a report was endorsed that will protect the character of our rural villages and townships which
includes Samford Village and Dayboro. The “Township and Coastal Communities Character Investigation” surveyed the unique character of townships and communities across our region, studied the elements that go into making them the way they are and investigated the heritage that has been such an integral part of establishing these townships of today.
I have been a huge advocate of Council focusing on both the heritage and character of areas such as Dayboro and Samford to ensure that these are respected as part of the Planning Scheme Policy - Township Character, which will in turn help inform a new planning scheme.
During the investigations for this report which were undertaken in 2021 to 2022, a character profile was put together for each township or coastal community that took into account such things as the landscape, community life and activities, as well as special places and buildings. Results from one of Council’s online Moreton Says community surveys in July-August 2022 focused on the place value and character features that you as a community highlighted and valued and these were also considered in the investigation.
Some of the comments from this survey targeted directly around areas in Division 11, were that residents enjoyed the rural feel of their community, allowing them to feel like they are getting away and enjoying things that were unique and specific to their area, such as parks and conservation areas. It is this type of ‘character’ the report has highlighted which will help to shape future planning for Division 11 and the region. The report can be viewed online at www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au by searching ‘Great Places Program’ and for more information on the broader planning reform program, this can be found at www.moretonbay.qld. gov.au/Services/Building-Development/ Reshaping-Planning.
John
Scott Park Playground
I have previously received feedback from residents about the installation of gates at the John Scott Park playground. Concerns have mainly been around the exit from the park that faces onto Station Street near the shelters and the proximity of this exit to the road. I consulted with staff on a number of occasions regarding the installation of a gate at this location and it was decided that further community consultation be undertaken, to gauge the broader community support to have a gate installed at this location. I am pleased to say that after conducting the community consultation, the result was that 67% of respondents were in favour of a gate and after further consultation with staff, a customised gate and panels have been installed.

Bushcare
Our next bushcare working bee will be held on Sunday 13 August from 2pm to 4pm. We have a massive amount of weeding to do, so would love a big turn out. Please consider volunteering for this successful community project (contact: samfordecocorridor@gmail.com).
Site signage
During the week commencing 17 July, work began on installing our two information signs: one facing the netball carpark and one next to the concrete path at the top of the hill. The large concrete bases are to enable easy wheelchair access. The signs comprise site maps, photos of progress and a brief summary of our aims and achievements. They were funded by MBRC after the Parks Planning Dept agreed to our initial concept in October 2020.
Installation
of our information signs Bird survey
On 19 July, our birdwatchers carried out our 100th bird survey at the Eco-Corridor and we plan to hold some sort of celebration of this major milestone, perhaps by holding a workshop. We carried out the first survey in May 2013 before any planting was done, so this decade of data shows how the birds have changed as the site has developed. This month we recorded 59 species, which is a solid list for the winter months. We had hoped to find the Russet-tailed Thrush, which was new for the site just last week (bringing the total to 154 species), but to no avail. There were plenty of Grey Fantails and Scarlet Honeyeaters around, but we didn’t find our favourite winter visitor, the Rose Robin. We saw Superb and Variegated Fairywrens past the top of the hill, as well as Double-barred Finch and Australian Pipit and Golden-headed Cisticola. The full details of the survey can be found on eBird.
Citizen Science project
On 25 July, our project leader, Dr Katie Irvine of the University of Adelaide, joined us at QUT SERF to test the beta version of the TERN fauna app for data collection (this will replace our paper data sheets). We also re-marked trees along the boundaries of the vegetation plots with Eco-Corridor blue paint to aid navigation during our quarterly bird surveys here. On 27 July, Katie presented a paper outlining our citizen science project at the TERN National Science Symposium at the Qld State Library, which raised awareness of the Eco-Corridor to many top ecologists from all around Australia.

Samford Live’s acoustic afternoons
The atmosphere was magic at our July show with The Long Johns – great crowd, fabulous band, kids dancing and a beautiful afternoon. As a local community based, grass roots project, we’re very thankful to our community for your support.
In August we showcase two rising talents on the Queensland acoustic scene, both accomplished singer songwriters and guitarists – and both with Samford roots.
Chalking up a million streams on Spotify is no mean feat, but that’s what Kobble Creek local Kelsey Berrington has achieved. With his fellow co-conspirator Pat Kenny, their duo - Freight Train Foxes, perform beautifully crafted original acoustic songs, contemporary melodic folk, now enjoyed around the world. Emerging from Brisbane’s open mic scene in 2019 and armed with the sonic influences of Passenger and Stu Larsen, the pair wield their unique brand of suburban acoustic folk, which manages to wound and soothe simultaneously.
Hailing from Eatons Hill, Zoe Quinn is increasingly in demand on the live music and festival circuit. She has appeared at Woodford Folk Festival, The Triffid, the Anywhere Festival, Redcliffe Kite Festival, Nerum Creek Music Festival, Caboolture Festival, South Bank Parklands, Redcliffe Festival of Sails, and in 2022 played her London debut.
Her growing fan base loves her compelling voice, skilled guitar playing and spirited folk/pop songs: … “what a beautiful voice, a true gift!” … “great music”…” Thank you for the music tonight – “you gave me goosebumps”.
And now you can see both these acts live – right here in Samford at the same show.
In September, our evening series returns with fast moving four piece The Gypsy Cats – get your swing dance shoes on!

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB
Double the Activities
Flexibility of both mind and body is built into programs at the SCHUB on Friday afternoons. On the first and third Fridays, the hall will be divided into two, so two activities can run concurrently. On August 4th, Samford Scribblers, a response group for our aspiring local writers, starts at noon. This is followed by a cuppa and a chat at 2pm with Chair Yoga, led by the wonderful Ruth Campbell starting at 3pm on one side of the hall. On the other side, a Mah-jong group will start at 2pm, running until 4pm.
Crafting Kindness, led by Lucie, Judy and Wendy, swings back into action on 11th August at 2pm. A cuppa and lots of chat run with it. Apart from our knitting and crochet of scarves, caps and rugs, and the creation of lasting roadside memorial flowers, we are also collecting good quality children’s picture books to go with lovely little stuffed toys made by the CCC ladies as a Christmas “Books for Bubs” project for new mums in Caboolture and Redcliffe.
Chair Yoga, led by Ruth, returns at 3.00pm on August 18, preceded by Cuppa and a Chat on one side of the hall. On the other side starting at 2.00pm is Mah-Jong.
Jenni is back from her rescue missions for the Good Stuff Ideas Forum on 25th. Cuppa and a Chat will start at 2pm. The free SDPPA Book Swap is open each Friday afternoon and on some other afternoons. Everyone is welcome.

The Samford Community Hub has meeting rooms and a large event space for hire. Centrally located on Mount Samson Road, Samford, spaces for hire include meeting rooms, a boardroom, a hall, kitchen and verandah area.
With plenty of onsite parking and accessible to all, why not get in touch?

Samford Community Hub is manager by the SDPPA.
As small steps of progression continue to take the Library forward in re-opening the main collection to the public, a new service to members of the local community has been proposed. The proposer has also offered to be the Coordinator for the service.
A similar service “Library Bags” when CLS was unincorporated and called Samford Commons Community Library, operated through Samford Support Network back in 2017 to SSN clients. This updated service idea is further opened up to the Samford Valley community.
What if CLS can provide a mobile book delivery service, similar in concept to Meals on Wheels?
What: The service would deliver books, DVD’s, CD’s to the sick, frail, elderly or anyone struggling to get out and about. Community & Recipient Benefits:
• Free access to reading and visual materials.
• Mental health addressed through increased community engagement, social connections and alleviating stress (includes volunteers).
• Enhancing knowledge, learning, memory.
How: Recipients would register with CLS and complete a short survey of likes/dislikes in materials.
CLS Delivery Coordinator manages the service.
CLS registered volunteers (free registration with Personal Accident insurance coverage) would deliver items using their personal transport to registered recipients. Hopefully those volunteers would also stop for a short social chat if helpful to the recipient.
Books would be provided from CLS surplus stocks (hence the free service).
The program would run on a fortnightly/ monthly basis.
To gauge interest in such a service, CLS is asking anyone who would like to become involved in the service, either as a recipient or volunteer, to please email info@ communitylibrarysamford.org.

SPADEwerx Theatre’s very own Santa lookalikes?
One of the many things l love about belonging to SPADEwerx Theatre is the entertaining variety of its friends and members.
While this photo may look like an audition for Santa’s grotto – three likely candidates plus a Santa’s Helper-elf – the occasion was actually the informal presentation of $2,500.00 profits from SPADEwerx’s recent Agatha Christie show to Peter Adams of Anglicare’s Women’s Homelessness Shelter in Toowong.
While we were relaxing in the courtyard outside “All Things Nice” boutique, elsewhere in Samford other actors were diligently rehearsing for our next production – Calendar Girls – opening in early October. We’re confident audiences will find it joyously delightful.

QCWA Samford
QCWA Samford members saw a lot of each other this month. It was a busy but productive July of activities and meetings. The highlight was the baking, catering and cuppa, scone and cake stall at the Samford Show. But we also had our AGM, catering functions, our monthly general meeting plus our Division Day.
Well done to all our CWA ladies who competed in the Show and Division Day with handicraft, sewing, cookery, art, patchwork. Special mention to Anne Hadlow who won the Samford Show Inaugural Trophy/Cup for the Cookery Competition.
At our own Show stall, baked goods were plentiful with over 50 bar cakes, more than 70 bags of fudge and brownies made, in excess of 20 special cakes and more than 700 scones were freshly baked. Thank you members.
Our AGM was well attended despite it being the next day after the show. Thank you members who never fail to help when asked to ‘bring a plate” and support by attending. Congratulations to Lilah for receiving the Quiet Achievers badge for the
year, for all the many jobs you take on Lilah!
Welcome to the 2023/24 Executive Members, especially yours truly (Marnie) as Vice President. We say many thanks to Jill for all she has done as VP over the last few years.
Our wonderful guest speaker Diane Hodge (pictured) delighted us with her photography shoots in Africa and her stories were great. She also judged our photos and gave great tips for better photography.

Samford Lions Club
The Charity Craft Creators (CCC) is a project of the Lions Club of Samford and our objective is to get together, have a chat and a cuppa whilst making items to be donated to various non-for-profit community organisations. The group believes that while fundraising to donate money to organisations is worthwhile, the donation of a handmade item is more personal.
We make quilts, library bags, teddy bears, toys, cushion covers, pillowcases, clothes, toiletry bags, knitted scarves, beanies and lap rugs, dream catchers, hero capes, fairy skirts, baby swaddling and burp bibs, and much more.
The CCC was very excited to win a first place in the 2023 Samford Show Quilting Category for a collaborative quilt made by more than two people and especially thank Julie Oliver and Coral Hallinan from CCC and Linda Boylan from Hemmed Inn.
Over the years, numerous boxes of handmade items worth many thousands of dollars have been donated to Lions InPlace, Bush Kids, ABC Christmas Toy Appeal, Caboolture Community Care & Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre, Share the Dignity, Mater Mothers Hospital NICU, Caboolture & Kilcoy Hospitals, the Galawinku & Ramingining communities in Northern Territory, Knitting for the Needy and lots more.
Ladies from the local Samford community and surrounding areas come along for craft and sewing projects, which in turn gives them a sense of achievement and personal satisfaction in knowing that their efforts
will benefit someone less fortunate than themselves.
The group has been successful and very thankful in obtaining grants from:
• Samford Lions Club
• Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank
• SDPPA
• GCBF
• Moreton Bay Regional Council as well as donations from people in the community such as fabrics, wool etc.
We meet on the second Thursday and fourth Saturday of each month between 9.30am and 2.30pm (except for December and January) at the Samford Anglican Church in Mt Samson Rd, Samford.
If you would like to come along to visit
our group and either join in the crafting or donate supplies, phone the facilitator Colleen Whiting on 0428 893 130, email colleen.toora@bigpond.com - or just drop in.

Those present who knew the cast members were surprised at how well they suited their roles. Santa had a very mischievous eye and some of those ladies (all club members) performed roles in such a manner we will all think of them in a different light! Very cheeky they were. A huge thank you to Jan Thompson for directing, producing and running the night, very much appreciated. Sponsor for the event was Ray White Samford. Competitions. Pennant season continues for the ladies and men’s teams. Samford has two teams in both the ladies and men’s competitions which for a smaller club is commendable. Unfortunately, although we have some very good bowlers, we don’t have the depth of excellent bowlers that the larger clubs have.
Our Division 1 ladies team played against a team with a number of district and state players. We went down but were happy with our performance and hope for a better result next time. Playing in a Pennants team is a way of representing our club and gaining valuable experience. Enquiries: info@samfordbowls.com.au

DID YOU KNOW?
Early Intervention For Better Mental Health
Researchers at University of the Sunshine Coast recently suggested the future of preventative mental health may involve offering brain scans to 12-year-olds. By mapping the uniqueness of an adolescent’s brain development, an indication of whether they’ll experience future mental health problems may be possible.
Local clinical psychologist Dr Angie Randell notes that earlier identification and management of mental health issues can work to provide better outcomes.
“Certain mental health issues like anxiety and depression can be thought of as involving negative mental habits. These mental habits form neural pathways in the brain, and these pathways work just like physical paths we walk along,” Dr Randell said.
“If you were in the bush and you worked out a way to walk through it, the first time might be rough. But if you kept walking down that same path over and over again, it becomes easy to see the path next time you are there, and you’re more likely to take that same route because it’s easy to see and follow.”
“When we are able to identify a negative mental habit early, it’s only a fairly new path. It hasn’t had many journeys on it yet, so the ability to form another new path should be easier than if there’s been many years of use of the same old path.”
Dr Randell noted that anxiety and depression are the most common presenting mental health concerns, with populationlevel data indicating these conditions are on the rise.
Parents may wonder what they can do to help their child increase their resilience. Dr Randell identifies empathy and a supportive network as key factors in helping children bounce-back emotionally after an adverse event.
“One of the first things that allows the bounce-back to happen is feeling that the emotions that were experienced from the knock have been fully understood and processed. Kids who feel seen and understood for who they are will have a better chance to be resilient,” she said.
“Relationship quality is one of the strongest determinants of mental health. Fostering positive family/friend/school/ community relationships and connections will be a significant protective factor that builds resilience in children and teens. It’s also why we need to develop a positive relationship with our SELF as we are able to learn to give ourselves empathy and compassion too.”
As children navigate life, they will inevitably face challenges that can affect their behaviour.
“When your child is having a difficult time with something (including when they are behaving in a not-so-ideal way) you can see it as a potential moment of resilience building. Parents can help kids by listening to their point of view, staying calm, and simply staying with them when they are in distress, and maintaining an attitude of curiosity and empathy with their kids about
their feelings,” Dr Randell said.
“Many times, when feelings are able to be identified and named, emotions are calmed and kids will be ready to shift gears into any problem solving that might be needed.”
When life gets tough, open communication with our children also provides an opportunity to connect with them.
“While protecting children from negative information is an understandable parenting instinct, having open, age-appropriate discussions about difficult topics can help your child learn that difficult things happen - and we can talk about them and deal with them. It can engender curiosity and confidence. These are other important mental attitudes that help people be resilient in life.”
Dr Angie Randell practices in Samford on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays (drangierandell.com).

Save the Date for an Evening of Dance and Fun!
Mark your calendars for a special event on Friday August 25th. Our Thank Goodness it’s Friday (TGIF) gathering will be an evening filled with music and dancing. We invite you to join us for a fun night as we host this event of dancing inside the beautiful hall.
Cedar Creek Public Hall was once renowned for its lively dance nights. History notes it also once played a pivotal role in raising funds for the Brisbane, Dayboro and Samsonvale Ambulances during its heyday. These days, the hall relies on events such as TGIF to generate funds for its own maintenance and operations. We sincerely hope that you can join us, enjoy a burger, hit the dance floor, and contribute to our fundraising efforts. In addition, for this event, we are pleased to offer a selection of beer and wine for your enjoyment as well as our usual burgers, sweets and soft drinks.
The August event provides another reason to celebrate. Thanks to the generous support from the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s grants program, we were able to secure funding for the hall’s improvements. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Council for granting us the opportunity to construct a new concrete path alongside the hall (pictured). We would also like to express our appreciation to Heathwood Concreting for their collaboration on this project.
In addition to the Council’s contribution, the diligent efforts of our committee and dedicated hall members have allowed us to enhance the hall even further. We have adjusted the panels enclosing the area beneath the hall, resulting in a visually appealing transformation. This minor alteration has not only improved the hall’s aesthetics, but has also made the space more versatile and accommodating for our events.
We invite you to join us at the August TGIF event, commencing from 5:30pm on Friday 25th August. Come and see the wonderful changes that have taken place in our hall, catch up with friends, as well as enjoy dinner and a dance. For this special TGIF event, the kitchen will close at 7.30pm with sweets, snacks and drinks available unit 10pm.
PM us via our Facebook page if you have a special song request.

NEW BOOK CLUB
We have a new book club beginning in August that will be meeting on the second Tuesday of each month at 10am instore. The lovely Leeanne who is instore most Saturday mornings, will be leading the group in reading genre fiction. Genre fiction covers crime, fantasy, romance, historical and science fiction – any fiction where people like their stories to follow the predicted format ie. the murder gets caught in the end or we at least find out who did it.
These are all huge categories of fiction, with so many new books coming out each month on top of all the great authors that we all need to catch up on, so The Second Tuesday Book Club will have fun exploring a diverse range of both new and classic titles, but while you’re waiting, let’s take a look at crime.
Do you love a crime novel, but are stuck waiting for a new one from your favourite author? Do the sheer number of authors in this genre overwhelm you so you don’t know where to start? To find your next favourite book, it’s probably best to get an understanding of all the different types of crime novels out there, so you can steer away (or towards) the really gory and frightening ones. Here are just a few examples: Cosy crime – Agatha Christie, Ricard Osman, Alexander McCall-Smith. Locked room – Alex Hay, Benjamin Stevenson.
Police procedural – Ann Cleeves, Louise Penny, Peter May, John Banville. Bush noir – Jane Harper, Chris Hammer, Peter Papathanasiou.
Legal - Claire Bayliss, John Grisham. Spy thriller – Mick Herron, LeCarre.
Psychological – Nicci French, Rose Wilding, Luke Jennings, Peter Swanson.
Humorous – M.C Beaton, Janet Evanovich, Parini Shroff.
Pop in and chat with us about your criminal fixations or sign up for The Second Tuesday Book Club and discover some great authors and books!

BOOK REVIEWS
If you’ve ever wondered what a trip to Antarctica would be like, or why artists are given sponsored journeys to the southern most continent, the The Art of Breaking Ice is for you. It provides rich and evocative descriptions of this vast icy wonderland, but also so much more.
This is the story of Nel Law, the first Australian woman to step foot in Antarctica. An artist and wife of the captain, Phillip Law, Nel longed to paint its beauty from life not just from her husband’s photos. Rachel Mead expertly takes us into Nel’s world on board the Magga Dan as well across the ice, to capture its physical beauty and its many inhabitants, while dealing with long held prejudices, not just against women, but also artists.
This is a fascinating and enjoyable read and as Pip Williams wrote, “Even more than a great read about a remarkable woman, this is the story of a continent and the men who tried to keep it to themselves.”
The blurb on the back of Lioness by the New Zealand author Emily Perkins reads like just another book about a woman’s midlife crisis, but don’t be fooled by the cover. Inside is an unusual tale of a woman’s slow awakening to the reality of the world she inhabits. She is a woman full of rage, confusion, love, fear and hope. She is a good person and an awful person. Perkins captures the reality of being human and our mixed attempts at achieving a good or meaningful life in a unique style and voice.
For fans of the Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt has a new novel, The Librarianist which will delight and warm you in equal measure. In the spirit of A Man called Ove, Bob, a retired Librarian and
longtime loner is brought back to the world of people, through a chance encounter with an escapee from the local aged care facility. As Bob looks back over his life, he finds a new way to move forward. DeWitt writes with humour and compassion for his odd cast of characters and celebrates the value of the ordinary life.

ASK NO QUESTIONS Eva Collins
Ask No Questions traces Eva’ Collins’s unexpected migration from Warsaw in 1958 to Australia when she was twelve years old. Her Jewish father who survived the horrors of World War Two, needed to escape the antisemitic violence of a country overcome by Communism, but he did not explain this to his daughter. The book follows Eva’s circular journey to Melbourne with her displaced parents, then back to her birthcountry, Poland, as an adult, and her return to Melbourne.
Through this coming-of-age story tracing Eva’s complex trauma caused by her sudden swift removal from the country and culture she loved, to her family’s name change to fit in to Australian society, to the bullying and lack of acceptance she faced in her new home, this young woman seeks and finds an identity that marries both cultures and an acceptance of herself. The title reveals the key theme of the book—that of being silenced for the sake of safety.
The magic of this delightful little book is that it is written simply in sparse poetry that is engaging and accessible without doing an injustice to the complexity of Eva’s trauma.
Short-listed in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year, this verse memoir is far too fine a piece of literature to have a limited audience. Everyone should read it to enjoy the poetry and to gain a perspective on the uncertainty of migration under duress. The verse-story lays bare the emotion a person who had no say in a family move nor any explanation of why it happened.

BRISBANE DETECTIVE TURNED FULL TIME AUTHOR
Jack Roney handed in his police badge to become a full-time crime, thriller, and speculative fiction author. With years of experience as a police officer and child protection detective, Roney is able to produce gripping, raw novels inspired by authentic experiences.
Roney was profoundly affected by some investigations and cases he was involved in on the job. He demonstrates this through expertly-paced, emotionally-charged storytelling, initially as a way of thought expression, and now as a career.
Author Jack Roney said his novels are not recreations of real cases but draw their authenticity from his many experiences and investigations. “I wrote this scene which was loosely based on a real event I’d experienced, and from that I developed a whole fictional storyline.”
Through genuine investigation procedure description and police officer dialogue, Roney’s personal involvement in detective work is evident and brutally honest on paper, providing candid insider perspectives into the fictional Australian-crime scene.
The Detective Jarrod O’Connor series, featuring the novels; The Angels Wept, The Demons Woke, and The Shadows Watch are Roney’s most recent novels, Reviewers describe them compelling, hang-on-fordear-life thrillers. Roney’s gripping writing immerses readers into a world of authentic fiction inspired by the people he has met, and real-life events he has experienced.
The series is being launched on 5th August through Brisbane-based Hawkeye Publishing. Director Hawkeye Publishing, Carolyn Martinez, said it’s a priority of Hawkeye’s to bring authentic Australian stories to readers. “In Jack Roney’s case, I knew within the first hundred pages of his manuscript that I wanted to sign him.
