Samford Arts Trail starts this weekend

30 NEW CITIZENS & 17 ‘LOCAL HEROES’ AWARDED

A REWARDING LOOK BEYOND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

In front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at the Samford Community Centre, the Rotary Club of Samford Valley welcomed 30 new citizens at its 2023 Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony. It is 31 years since Rotary conducted its first Australia Day ceremony and with few exceptions has held a ceremony each year. The conferees at this year’s ceremony represented 15 countries by birth including South Africa, the United Kingdom, Philippines and India.

Like many young women her age, 21-yr-old Samford Valley local, Sinead Skorka-Brennan dreamed of finding the perfect job. One that would build her confidence but also give her independence and job satisfaction. In a world where preconceptions about disability are still an issue, she was finding employment opportunities really difficult to come by. You see, Sinead is a young woman with Down Syndrome and because of this, she is often treated like a child, instead of a young adult.

Anticipation is building for the Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios, commencing this weekend and continuing for the next four weekends in June. Thirty five local artists will display their talents throughout the Samford Valley, Samford Village, Yugar through to Warner, Cedar Creek, Clear Mountain and Dayboro. Join the talented artists and artisans for a great day out (or several!) in our beautiful region.

You can pick up a Studio Guide (which includes a map) from the Slab Hut in Samford, Information Centres and selected retail outlets in the area, or head to www. creativesamford.com/2019-arts-trail/ for a downloadable digital version. The Guide features the artists exhibiting in the Trails, as well as a great range of workshops on offer for you to enjoy.

Ironically, Sinead is an accomplished gymnast, having represented Australia at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March this year, bringing home four medals, two of them gold in bar and beam events. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Dickson Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. You would think these achievements alone would open doors for her – but unfortunately not.

Rotary Club President, Amanda Miller said the ceremony had been an opportunity for all Australians, whether they are citizens by birth or by choice, to join national celebrations that reflect, respect and celebrate - we reflect on our history, its highs and lows - we respect the stories of all our people - and we celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people.

For the first time this year, the Arts Trail will be working with MBRIT and Mountain Wine Tours to offer a ‘Wine and Art’ bus tour. This will be a great day out with wine tasting and food experiences, while enjoying a great variety of local art. Tours can be booked on the Mountain Wine Tours or Creative Samford websites.

Following the ceremony, the 2023 Dickson Awards hosted by Hon Peter Dutton commenced. These awards honour local individuals, businesses and community groups whose contributions to Dickson make them every day ‘local heroes.’

Amongst the esteemed group of 17, it was a privilege to witness the recognition of local

Enter the award-winning and critically acclaimed ABC documentary series Employable Me, which followed the stories of nine people with disabilities as they battled to find work. The documentary, which was aired in April, aimed to show potential employers the capable people behind their condition and highlight the importance for people to feel valued. Throughout the series, participants worked with experts, job coaches and their families to uncover their skills and talents and match them to roles that harnessed their strengths.

One of the artists featured this year is Danielle B Latta, owner of Running Duck Studio in Dayboro. This year, Danielle is undertaking an Endangered Project, whereby artwork will be created to draw attention to the plight of many animals

in the wild - from beautiful big lions and elephants to the smalls of our very own endangered pygmy possum, the variety and numbers are overwhelming. As an artist, Danielle finds herself looking a lot deeper into every aspect of her surroundingsvisually, spiritually and emotionally. Drawing from these observations allows her to connect with the viewers of the resulting artwork. Danielle will donate a portion of the sale of artworks sold from this collection, to the corresponding animals’ preservation fund, in your name. Danielle’s studio is Number 23 in the Arts Trails booklet.

Sinead hoped to work in aged care with the goal of improving the lives of those she cared for. Taking steps toward her goal, she completed a Certificate 3 in Aged Care and was looking for an employer to give her a chance. That employer was Anglicare Symes Grove, where Sinead secured a parttime role, helping residents with their daily needs two days a week.

“I make cups of tea and coffee and serve meals and drinks. I feed someone if they can’t feed themselves. I help with activities like craft or physio classes, take residents for walks, or push someone in a wheelchair or wheelie bed so that they can participate in special activities, for example in a concert. I will also run activity programs in the future,”

Anglicare Symes Grove Manager Sharon Marsden said Sinead had been a welcome addition to the team at the home. “We were thrilled to offer Sinead the chance to follow her passion of working in the aged care sector. She is a valued member of our team here at Anglicare and brings a lot of joy, compassion and empathy in the way she interacts with our residents.”

Creative Samford Inc. is the organiser of the Arts Trail, and Coordinator Ann Russell is hoping that this year’s Trails will attract new visitors as well as those returning to experience them again. “This unique art experience benefits not only the artists, but many other local businesses, with visitor

We also congratulate Sportsperson of the Year, Shai Mayberry a very active and inspiring young sportsman from Mount Samson with a passion for getting involved in most sports including cricket, soccer, AFL, rugby and swimming. Sinead believes that the series has made people more aware of what it’s like to have a disability and try to find a job. “It’s so much harder to even be invited for a job interview. Being in the Employable Me series was a huge opportunity for me to show that everyone has different qualities and strengths, disability or not,” she said.

numbers increasing every year,” she said. The trails will run from 10am to 4pm over the first four weekends in June, with the fifth weekend playing host to some great workshops. This is your chance to get your friends together and enjoy a great day out in the country.

Year was awarded to Elena Stephenson, an outstanding mountain runner from Highvale, recently featured in this newspaper.

A Community Service Award was presented to Hayley Grant who is highly regarded for her ongoing efforts to raise the profile of Samford State School and in particular her amazing efforts in organising the Samford State School’s 150 years celebrations, coordinating the sponsorships, competition, signage and catering.

Asked what she liked most about her job, Sinead said, “I like helping other people. That is why I had the idea to work in Aged Care already since High School. I find it most rewarding when I am able to make the residents happy and can help to make their lives a little bit easier. I find it very rewarding to get to know each resident and know what their needs are and how they like something done. It makes me happy when they are happy.”

For more information, see the Creative Samford Website, keep up to date on Facebook www.facebook.com/ samfordartstrail, or contact Ann Russell at trails19@creativesamford.com.

Small Business of the Year Award went to Amain Gymnastics, with owner and head coach Melissa Arkell recognised for her business’ contribution to improving the health, wellbeing and fitness of countless young people in our region. Known for their inclusivity by welcoming all ages, cultures and abilities including the more senior in the community, the business also challenges their coaches to train Special Olympic athletes.

“These awards celebrate the achievements, talents and drive of ordinary people, businesses and organisations who have made extraordinary contributions in what has been another challenging year,” Mr Dutton said.

Look out for feature articles on each of our local heroes in future editions.

ANZAC DAY 2023: LIGHT HORSE TRIBUTE MARCH

Many of us will recall the amazing procession down Main Street two years ago, as a group of 16 local riders and horses marched past hundreds of locals who lined the street to honour the men, women and horses that served our country. This procession made its way to Samford’s Avenue of Honour to lay a tribute there after the official Samford RSL ceremony.

Gabrielle Garnet was the person behind this special gesture and is planning to organise this once again in 2023. The ride will commence at her house at 9.30am on Tuesday 25 April. Located just a short walk from Main Street, there is plenty of room to park floats. You can ride or walk beside your horse, and the focus is on safety, inclusiveness and honour. This means your horse needs to be quiet and reliable. If young children are keen to ride, they must be accompanied by an adult who is familiar with the horse.

If you’re interested in being involved, get in touch with Gabrielle on 0413 506 406.

Dear Editor,

Recently we discovered how little actual protection we have in our beautiful valley from environmental vandalism. There is an urgent need for education, agency coherence and accountability.

A fire involving commercial quantities of mixed demolition material containing large amounts of plastic and other hazardous material was dumped and burnt immediately adjacent to a waterway on a neighbouring residential property at Mount Glorious Road, Highvale. The owner chose this course of disposal rather than dispose of the demolition materials at a regulated, lined landfill. Burning truckloads of hazardous material, especially plastics, liberates large amounts of carcinogenic compounds, and has the potential to impact the ground water table, wildlife and people for generations to come.

warning and without a fire permit. The fire burnt intensely for most of Sunday night, smouldered and reignited unattended over the next 2 days.

The local fire warden was contacted on Monday and was appalled when he inspected the scene. He contacted his District Officer who advised someone with Hazchem experience would come to inspect.

On Tuesday the Fire Warden was told by the District Officer that no one would be attending to investigate and to ring 000 if he was still concerned.

The local RFS was mobilised but they claimed not to have authority to enter the property.

At this point we contacted DES but were told that DES would not deal with it as it was too small, and they would not spend the thousands of dollars to investigate. We were advised by DES to contact MBRC as MBRC was the lead agency for this type of incident.

residential land. How do we collectively protect our beautiful valley against this environmental vandalism by unaccountable landowners and public agencies who abrogate their responsibilities?

Dear Editor,

Recently we received a Land Tax Assessment Notice from the Qld Revenue Office advising we had an amount payable of $733.30 based on the recent increase in valuation of our property. It was due within a month and noted clearly that if ‘you pay late it will cost you more’. The entire notice looked legitimate, so in this age of prolific scammers at every turn, I called the official number listed on their website and lo and behold it was legitimate.

When the dumping was first observed in mid-December, MBRC was contacted for advice. The neighbours were told MBRC could not act and to instead contact the Department of Environment and Science (DES).

Rather than proceed directly to DES, we as concerned neighbours, did the neighbourly thing and approached the owner who agreed to remove all hazardous material. However, on a Sunday night in January, the owner lit the pile still containing truckloads of hazardous waste without

QFES inspectors and an MBRC Ranger attended 2 days after the fire, but of course all the hazardous material had already been burnt. A cursory walk around the fire was made and QFES told the owner to rake out the fire, but of course this only resulted in the fire reigniting. The owner told QFES they were on their way to purchase silt fence to install around the perimeter of the smouldering pile. One week later and still no silt fence has been installed. Meanwhile the owner claims they will continue to dump and burn because they can.

Darren Grimwade (MBRC) was contacted several times and has confirmed MBRC will not act and advised us to contact our local State member Nikki Boyd. This we have done, and hope Nikki will be able to do something.

The landowner has effectively set up an unregulated, unlined landfill, adjacent to a waterway, on a five-acre block of rural

Our property had been assessed under current valuation guidelines and was now assessable for land tax. I thought the family home was exempt, so I asked if it made any difference the fact it is our residential home and, this is the best part, it makes a huge difference as the family home is exempt. So, if that was the case, why had we, and I assume countless other Queenslanders, received this notice in the first place?

The answer was staggering - it is an automatic process. They automatically assume the house is an Investment Property and you need to prove that it is not, and the owner needs to claim the exemption. So we claimed the exemption, which, while not overly difficult, was still a painful process. We needed to download a particular form, complete it and email in, which we duly did and at this point we are still waiting on the outcome.

I just wonder how many other homeowners may have been duped, just paid the invoice, and moved on with life.

LOCAL NEWS STARRY, STARRY NIGHT

People are often attracted by the vast space in the Samford area, and we’re not just talking acres of land. Thanks to less light pollution, locals are treated to darker skies that provide a stellar vantage point for stargazing and hobby astronomy.

Local enthusiast Paul Hannah has set up an observatory in his own backyard, topped with a rotating aluminium dome. While recent cloud cover has been hiding some gems in the sky, Paul has picked out a few interesting things to keep an eye out for if a clear night emerges.

“The star attraction over the next couple of weeks will be a Comet called c/2022 E3 ZTF. It isn’t a very catchy name, but that doesn’t really matter as it is unlikely anyone will see it again. It was here around 50,000 years ago but if it does return, it won’t be for many millions of years,” Paul said.

“The comet will poke its head up over the northern horizon, early in the evening on February 4, but the full moon will spoil any chance of seeing it until the 8th. By that time it will be hard to see with the naked eye; binoculars will be your best chance,” he said.

“If you look to the north about a third the way up in the sky and slightly to the west, you will see a reddish object; that is Mars. Search the area below it and to the right for the comet.”

The comet will appear higher in the sky each successive night after February 8, increasingly becoming harder to spot until it disappears entirely.

Paul said the comet may appear like a chalk smudge on a blackboard but

depending on the clarity of the night and strength of your binoculars, there’s a good chance you can pick out some of its green colour and comet tail.

“Many comets spend most of their lives in a region called The Oort Cloud. This is a region of rocks dust and ice that surrounds our solar system,” Paul said.

“When a comet is close enough to the Sun some of its body evaporates and forms a tail.”

For the science buffs out there, Paul notes that the green tail of this particular comet is due to it comprising an unstable chemical not normally seen on Earth called diatomic carbon.

If Paul’s expertise has launched anyone’s stargazing interest, he is happy to answer any astronomical questions at: astropaul@ palindrome.com.au.

“I will do what I can to answer them, but as with every science, the exciting thing about astronomy is that not every question has an answer – yet.”

Despite a very hot and humid day, a large crowd of Samford residents and others from across the region, gathered at the Samford Museum for our annual Australia Day event.

In addition to a special variety of displays and activities for all the family, we launched our latest publication – “The Samford District Historical Museum 1986 to 2018” - which records the history of the establishment of the museum, the acquisition of buildings and displays, and the numerous activities and projects undertaken by the members of the museum from inception to the present day.

At the launch, we were pleased to welcome our Federal Member, Mr Peter Dutton, who congratulated the museum on the many years of dedicated service to preserving the history of the Samford district. Our Local Councillor, Darren Grimwade, also attended and acknowledged the hard work put in by a great many keen people from the community to achieve our aims.

Our President, Geoff Harris, introduced Mrs Margaret Hickey, who was Museum President for fourteen years from 1998 to 2012 and was a member of the Editorial Committee who worked many years gathering the records of the museum’s activities and putting them together into our latest publication. Margaret spoke on the early days living in the Samford district, “when we were all dairy farmers” and the trials early settlers faced when first settling in the district, along with the efforts of many past members of the museum society, some no longer with us but still remembered for their contributions.

Local identity Ross Pickering, was given the honour of launching the new book, congratulating the committee on its efforts and simply adding “Ta-da – Here ‘tis”. Visitors enjoyed sizzling sausages, billy

tea & damper, tea/coffee and the Australia Day favourite, Lamingtons, and lots of cold drinks to fend off the heat. Many visitors stayed on to try writing with nib-pens & ink, to make paper planes, to watch the old machinery operating, and to imagine themselves on the train heading for the Samford Railway station while admiring the railway display.

There was plenty of chatter about the reminders of the old days, and warm appreciation for the special efforts of our museum members in creating such an interesting and enjoyable activity for Australia Day 2023.

“The Samford District Historical Museum 1986 to 2018” is available for purchase at the museum at $22.00 per copy. For further information, please email info@ samfordmuseum.com.au or phone Geoff Harris on 0417 610 983.

A place to Connect, Exchange and Grow Hello Gardeners and non-Gardeners alike! If you have been following our journey, you will know that last year we created a vision for the community garden as a shared space in the heart of Samford for people and plants to be together. Our big aim is to grow a thriving garden to showcase the edible plants that grow in our area, so more of us will feel inspired and encouraged to go home and grow in our own backyards.

You may not know that we spent much of the latter part of the year applying for grants so that we can build the garden, capture water, and bring our vision of creating a beautiful community space in the heart of the village to life.

2023 PROGRAM

Samford Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) kicks off its 2023 program this month.

Last year finished on a high note for Samford RDA with the awarding of its most improved rider for 2022 and the announcement of a grant to sponsor RDA horse Paddington Bear.

Pine Rivers Community Finance Ltd, operating the Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank), generously provided a grant of $1,650 to Samford RDA through the Community Enterprise Foundation. The grant continues the bank’s long-time commitment to sponsoring a local RDA horse. Paddington Bear is one of 12 horses working at the RDA centre, and the annual sponsorship helps to meet the cost of his feed and care.

Samford RDA greatly appreciates the support from both businesses and residents of Samford Valley and surrounding areas. A big thank you goes to Containers for Change Samford Valley and Dayboro and all residents who contributed to the Samford RDA-Containers for Change Support Day last month. More than 2,500 container refunds were donated directly to the centre.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

For anyone interested in becoming a Samford RDA volunteer, induction sessions will be held from 9am to 11am on Wednesday February 15, Friday February 17 and Saturday February 18. The sessions are held at the RDA Centre at Samford Showgrounds and introduce people to volunteer activities and personal opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to meet others, stay fit and make a real difference to the lives of people with a disability. For more information or to book your place at an induction session, email volunteer@samfordrda.com.au.

Well, 2023 is already shaping up to be a BIG year for the Samford Patch - we are excited to announce that we have received notification of our first successful grantfrom our very own local Community Bank Samford - Bendigo Bank for $11,000. AMAZING LICHENS

Our first meeting of 2023 will be held on Tuesday 7 February in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. It will feature Roman Busianczuk who will introduce us to the fascinating world of lichens, which are a complex life form where a fungus forms a symbiotic relationship

with an alga, cyanobacterium or both. About 17,000 species have been described worldwide, but there would be many more not known to science. This is a topic we haven’t covered in our 35-year history, so be sure to come along. Anyone who attended Roman’s previous talks on microflowers and epiphytic orchids will know that he will provide a wealth of information, illustrated by stunning photos.

We encourage attendees to bring along native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash) while socialising.

At our December meeting, Dr Hodgon, Manager Threatened Species Coordination at the Department of Environment and Science, provided an overview of the Threatened Species Program 2020-40, its structure and functions and current work, including with First Nations groups and community groups.

The Samford Branch end-of-year break-up party was kindly hosted by the BarksdalePecoraros. Members first strolled around the varied garden habitats, ranging from a forested hilltop, rockery, terraces, pastures and seasonal creeks, including both formal and informal areas planted with natives, as well as an orchard and a large, enclosed vegetable garden. Afterwards, the group shared a delicious dinner and convivial conversation. We thank Keith and Sarah for being such wonderful hosts.

An early ‘date claimer’: the 2023 NPQ Autumn Plants Market will be held at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 1 April. To find out more about our friendly group, check out the website (npq.org.au/ samford/).

LEARN FRENCH

Would you like to learn French with others in a small group? Conversational French lessons have started back again for 2023, run weekly on Tuesday mornings at Café Lagarto in the Lifestyle centre off Mount Glorious Road.

Lise from Let’s Speak French is a native French teacher who has been running French lessons in Samford for the last 7 years. Lise said they have been popular with locals who want to learn French for travel or as a hobby, whilst making social connections.

The lessons cater for different levels and ages and because the group is small, it provides opportunities to chat in French and feel at ease and without pressure, learning French over a coffee in a casual environment. Samford’s 107 Army Cadet Unit is back parading on Monday nights at the Samford Community Hub (SCHUB), with Senior cadets having planning days to ensure the program is challenging and fun at the same time.

With a new year comes new promotions, with Harry Anderson appointed as the new Cadet Under Officer (highest rank for a cadet) and new Cadet Warrant Officer Luca Pribilovic. Cadets Van De Leur and Pelegrin were also promoted to Cadet Sergeant.

Australian Army Cadets (AAC), a youth development program for 13-18yrs, acts to promote pride in the self, community and nation. Against common belief, although the AAC has strong affiliation with the Australian Military, cadets are not part of the Army nor obligated to join when they come of age. The AAC, however, aims to be an inclusive environment where one can experience adventurous activity and cultivate the values of courage, respect, teamwork and integrity. Army Cadets is founded on strong community partnerships which involves parents and other organisations such as the RSL.

We will be parading from 1800 to 2030 every Monday excluding holidays. If

interested in joining, please contact the Officer commanding on 107ACU@ armycadets.gov.au. We are taking new recruits now, so if you are between 13 and 16 years old, send an email and then come on down on Monday night to have a go. We Want You for the Samford Army Cadet Unit.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK

Kindness in words creates confidence, kindness in thinking creates profoundness and kindness in giving creates love.

Lao Tzu (Chinese philosopher)

Between February 14 and 20 in Random Acts of Kindness Week, bring unexpected joy into the lives of others by ringing friends and family members you haven’t spoken to for a while, smiling at strangers, thanking

those who serve in shops and cafes, giving compliments to those who do a good job, helping a neighbour, cooking and delivering dinner to someone having a tough time, sitting to talk for a few minutes with someone feeling lonely or sad, filling the seven days with little acts and gifts to make others happy.

In this week, International Book Giving Day falls on the 14th along with Valentine’s Day. Surprise a loved one by buying a book from Baffies Oan, Samford’s very own bookstore, for a loved one. Keep your eyes peeled, for around the village there will be book parcels from Crafting Kindness for young and old. Read the book if it takes your fancy, sign your name inside then leave it somewhere for somebody else to find. Enjoy sharing what you read. See how far what you read will go when shared.

Samford Scribblers starts at noon on February 3 at the SCHUB, 2204 Mt Samson Road. Craft trolleys will be out every week for those who like to keep fingers busy as they talk. (Thank you to Wendy Sonnenberg and Judy Worsley who created the trolleys.) Crafting Kindness swings into action on February 10 at 2.30pm. Everyone welcome every week. Cuppa and cake and lots of chat every week from 2.00pm.

REGULAR BUSHCARE TO RECOMMENCE

Monthly Bushcare

Our monthly bushcare working bees, run in conjunction with MBRC environment officers, will re-commence at 2pm on the second Sunday of each month in 2023, with the first session scheduled for Sunday 12 February. We will make sure we work in the shade in the hotter months. Our volunteer numbers were down in 2022, so we hope to see some new and returning faces in 2023 to keep this valuable project on track.

Bird Walk

On Saturday 21 January, 38 Birds Queensland members attended their first excursion of 2023 at the Eco-Corridor, recording 68 bird species in less than 3 hours. The group first checked out the White-breasted Woodswallows perched in the large Forest Red Gum near the entrance, and saw about 30 Welcome Swallows on the wires along the main road and several Fairy Martins hawking near the culvert where they nest. The birders then set off along the Eco-trail where some people had good

views of Brown Cuckoo-Dove. After the short hill climb past revegetation zone P3, the throng followed the footpath towards the archery as far as the causeway over Samford Creek and had fabulous views of Common Cicadabird, Red-backed Fairywren and Spangled Drongo. It is wonderful to see the Eco-Corridor being used by other organisations in this way.

Spider Survey

Our nocturnal spider surveys are becoming increasingly popular, with 13 arachnophiles taking part on the evening of Saturday 21 January. This community event attracted attendees from the Samford district, but others travelled from all over Brisbane and even from the Sunshine Coast! After a detailed briefing by Greg Anderson at 7pm, the group began exploring along the Eco-Trail behind revegetation zone P1. Torches and spotlights easily located wolf spiders with their distinctive eye shine. Participants examined a multitude of webs among the branches and leaves and found a myriad of spider species, many of which needed a magnifying glass for ID. There were comb-footed spiders, orb weavers, huntsmen, crab spiders and even net-casting spiders (full details on our Facebook page).

The evening was supposed to finish around 9pm, but the enthusiasm was so strong that it continued until almost 10pm. Besides spiders and other invertebrates, roosting Figbirds, Brush-tailed and Ringtailed Possums, a carpet python and three very cute Australian Owlet-nightjars all made an appearance in revegetation zone P1 (we didn’t even get to P2). This just shows that, if you create suitable habitat, the fauna will soon move in.

SUSTAINABLE SPORT

It is Australia after all, so you’d expect sport to be ever present in our communities, no more so than at this time of year for major events and with local seasons starting for community sport and school sport.

One of the Green Street Badges at www.greenstreet. net.au/badges focuses on sustainable sport aspirations and the list of ‘to do’s’ has implications for both individuals and organisations.

The list invites us to:

• Use sportswear (eg. shirts, shorts, socks, footwear) which is made of sustainable materials and is produced sustainably.

• Use sporting goods (eg. bats, balls, nets, racquets) which are produced sustainably.

• Maintain our sporting fields in a sustainable way with minimal use of water and no use of harmful fertilisers.

• Use low energy and low emission vehicles and tools to maintain our sporting facilities.

• Use car pooling, bus transport or public transport to travel to and from sporting activities.

• Advocate for the provision of sustainably constructed and maintained sporting facilities, including sustainable lighting.

• Advocate strongly for the provision of sustainably produced sportswear.

• Advocate strongly for the provision of sustainably produced sports goods.

Fortunately, our Regional Council is conscious of the need to design and construct sustainable sporting facilities and the local tennis and netball centre and football facilities are examples of the use of renewable energy, water harvesting, sustainable building design, waste reuse and recycling. Not to forget that the Brisbane Olympic bid was won on the back of strong sustainability credentials.

While there remains a need to change to much more sustainable sporting apparel and goods, there are examples emerging of good practice even in small ways, such as the recycling of tennis balls and even the housing of tennis balls in recyclable cardboard cylinders rather than unsustainable energy consuming metal and plastic. This is a bit of ‘back to the future’ for those who recall the days decades ago when tennis balls were bought in cardboard boxes containing 12 balls.

If you have suggestions for extra items for Sustainable Sport or other Green Street Badges, either email info@greenstreet.net. au, call 0407 190 162 or sign up to the free site and interact with others on your Green Street Wall.

In mid January, a good few members from SGVPC headed to the Zone 26, two day Junior Development Camp which is held annually at Burpengary Pony Club. The weekend camp provided not only training in show jumping, cross country, dressage, mounted games, horse bio-mechanics, horsemanship and sporting to name a few, but information sessions on vet care, hoof care and an exercise physiologist also helped the riders with their riding and fitness knowledge for their sport. The camp is renowned for being a fun kick start to the riding year.

SGVPC is looking forward to hosting a lot of fun events for 2023 and providing informative musters and new visiting instructors and learning for its members. If you are interested in what pony club is like, please look at the website or follow our Facebook site for more information. At our Sunday service on 22 January, we recognised that come Thursday 26th and many of us celebrate Australia Day many of our population would have little to celebrate. For them the day represents sadness, loss and the alienation on lands on which they had dwelt for many millennia.

With the referendum on an Indigenous voice to parliament coming sometime this year, we have endeavoured to increase our understanding of “The Statement from the Heart”. To achieve that goal, we have been using the Australian Board of Mission study entitled “A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS: Listening to the Statement from the Heart”. The study resumes on Friday 10 February at midday in the church. All are welcome and we each bring our own lunch to eat as we go through the study.

The Parish Annual General Meeting will take place after the 8am Eucharist on 5 February.

“SILVER ARROW” SHOOTING

Braving the heat of a Brisbane January day, a small group of Samford archers shot the first “Silver Arrow” target shoot for the year recently.

The Silver Arrow competition started in the 1950’s as a “postal shoot” between the South East Queensland Archery Society clubs of the time. Club members either shot at their own Club or visited another Club for the experience and the social contact. What was then the Grange Club visited the Wynnum Club frequently.

The results from the various Club gatherings were sent to a central recorder by mail, and the recorder eventually advised the participating Clubs of the results and placings.

The first tournaments were for a target round, and the overall winner held an actual Silver Arrow trophy, made by Mr Rhys Williams, for a year.

Over time, Field shooting, Clout shooting,

and Indoor Shooting styles have been added to the competition, and four shoots of each style are contested each year.

Over the years there have been changes to the formats of the various divisions of the competition.

The most recent change has been the use of “Archers Diary” to record the results. Archers Diary is an on-line management program which, among many other things, can record the scores of all the archers in Australia who are affiliated members of Archery Australia. Using this program

means results are known more quickly, and archers can look at the scores of any other affiliated archer.

Samford Valley Target Archers will also commence beginner introductory courses for the year in February. The Club takes up to 24 students into each course, once per month. Courses are very popular and tend to be filled up to 2 or even 3 months in advance. If you’d like to know more, head to samfordarchery.org and click through the ‘Try Archery’ link.

COMMUNITY FOLK DANCE RETURNS!

Dance into 2023

Tired of the gym, and noisy night clubs? Then come to our community dance!

We revel in an assortment of Anglo/ Celtic/Bush dances with an historical twist. Embrace your culture (even if you didn’t think you had one) and join us for a funfilled evening of dancing. It’s social and absolutely non-competitive, but you can still be part of a team as you dance to the brilliant music of our band, Phillip’s Dog.

Community dance is important now more than ever, as people look for ways to connect. It encourages people to be more active, to socialise and develop creative and physical skills. Just a few of the physical benefits dancing can give you are: reduced stress levels, improved relaxation, stronger bones and muscles, weight control and a healthier brain. Research has shown that dancing is the very best form of exercise. We’re proud to be part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy & Active Program which encourages us all to exercise more, and it only costs $4:00!

Join us at the Farmers Hall in Samford on Friday evenings 7:30pm - 9:30pm on the 2nd Friday of every month commencing 10 February to 8 December. In June, we will have two sessions - 9 & 23 June.

We’re also starting a new series of dances at the Hills District Community Hall, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills on Friday evenings 7:30pm - 9:30pm. These will be on the fourth Friday on the month

commencing 24 February to 24 November (excluding May and June).

QCWA Samford

2023 is the Year of the Dragonfruit at Samford CWA - our product study of this interesting plant. Do any members have a dragonfruit plant? If so, we’d love to have a look. Our January meeting was very interesting as we will be learning about Trinidad and Tobago this year also. Thanks Diane for a great informative power point.

Guest speakers always broaden our horizons and we were truly entertained by an interesting talk by Mike Furminger (pictured with Judith) as he spoke to us about working with the Royal Family in the 1980s. He gave us a wonderful insight into his experiences travelling with and serving members of the Royal Family over several years. Thank you so much Mike for giving us your time and we truly appreciated starting our year so well. We also welcomed visitors Margaret and Christina who came along to check us out and surely had a great morning. More fun things to come ladies.

Reminders:

February is our Samford Branch birthday

month and as 1964 was the year we began, we will be 59 years old. Members, please keep Wednesday 15 February free as after our meeting, lunch will be at the Gaythorne RSL. We would love to see as many members there to celebrate together.

We are still collecting used prescription spectacles, stamps and coins for donation to those in need. Also, any unwanted jewellery will be appreciated for donation to ACWW. Please bring to the monthly meetings.

Catering events are going very well. QCWA Samford Branch caters for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. Please contact Fiona on 0421 353 272. If you’re interested in hiring the air-conditioned CWA Hall in Main Street, please call Lilah on 0421 709 723.

Samford Bowls Club

It is 9.30am on Australia Day as I sit at the computer thinking what I will write this article about. Sometimes there is so much going on that it cannot possibly be told in one story. Many club members have been busy and some have been lucky enough to have been away on holidays. Others who have the delightful job of minding the grandchildren over the school holidays are now free to get back to their routine and some others are now packing their bags for a cruise across the seas.

Australia Day is a day when we learn about many wonderful people and their stories that led to them being chosen for special titles such as Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero. All through our society there are many people just like them that go about giving to organisations and not expecting recognition. I would like to thank the members at Samford Bowls Club that keep turning up each week to do all manner of tasks to ensure our club hums along.

From mowing the grass, striving to

obtain grant money, coaching, office duties, bar duties, umpires, board positions, kitchen duties, selectors, doing the odd jobs and the list goes on and on.

We like to acknowledge the achievements of former members who have moved from the Samford Bowls Club. One of these past members is Denice McLean who moved to the Sunshine Coast and plays for the Kawana Thunder team. Denice and her team defeated the Broadbeach Bulls (who had won for the last eight years) to win the Women’s State Pennant Division one, 2022: 66-60. Well done Denice.

Our Coaching and Umpire teams put together a well-attended morning on Sunday 22nd January. New coaches Jeff Himstedt and Alan Clark joined Barry Maher and Janice Ridley along with Umpires Jo Ehrlich and Neil Mason to give members an opportunity to learn something new or refresh something old. We know that members will now put all they have learnt into action on the greens.

Village Barefoot Bowls: If you missed the first week don’t worry as Allan will accommodate you and your team. Ph: 0429 019 486.

Over the summer there is an abundance of sport to follow - cricket, tennis, netball, basketball and the Dakar. But did you know that the Jackaroos (Australian Bowls Team) won the three-test series against Ireland played on the Gold Coast?

IN CONVERSATION WITH BEN HOBSON

Author visits get off with a bang in 2023 at Baffies Oan Books.

Did you enjoy the Paramount+ smash hit Yellowstone 1883? Then, Ben Hobson’s The Death of John Lacey is the book for you. A searing Australian western set in the goldfields of Ballarat, a viscerally powerful story of greed, power and violence, it will grab you from the first page. John Lacey’s lust for power and gold brings him riches and influence beyond his wildest dreams. Only he knows the terrible crime he committed to attain that wealth. Years later, as Lacey ruthlessly presides over the town he has built and named after himself, no one

has the courage to question his power or how he wields it.

The Death of John Lacey is a powerful dissection of dispossession, colonisation and the crimes committed in their name. In Ben Hobson’s trademark style, showcased in his two earlier novels, To Become a Whale and Snake Island, it is also a moving and tender account of the forging of masculinity and, in this instance, the love between brothers, and a meditation on the true meaning of mercy and justice.

Join Fiona for a conversation with Ben on the costs of shaping the Australian frontier, men, power, land, dispossession and more. Enjoy a drink and some nibbles, ask your own question or just get your book signed. Ben is the delightful host of his own podcast, ‘Burgers, Beers and Books’ as well as a monthly online Book club. It’s sure to be a lively and entertaining evening. Friday February 24 at 6.30pm.

Places are limited, so book now instore or online at www.baffiesoanbooks.com.au and click on Events.

New Novel Set In Our Own Backyard

Peter Cromarty is a former air traffic controller, pilot and aviation safety regulator who is now adding author to his CV. Set in Samsonvale, Samford and Brisbane, Death or Grievous Bodily Harm is Peter’s debut fiction novel, with local book launches slated for Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February.

While our area is known for its natural beauty, Peter decided it would serve well as the scene of a bit of drama as well.

“Australian crime is popular at the moment. So, although I could have set it in any place with which I was familiar, or even a fictional location, I knew this area best,” he said.

Peter gave himself a set of criteria to crafting his novel, including making sure that the protagonist and his family were normal people but plunged into abnormal circumstances. His aim was to allow characters to react in a way ordinary people would, despite their unique situations.

Early feedback of Death or Grievous Bodily Harm is extremely promising with one of Peter’s editors describing it as, “a

thriller with heart as an ordinary bloke buckles up his hero pants – I commend this one to you.”

Others have enjoyed reading about a hero in his sixties, and that the book is a “fastmoving thriller with an old-style hero who comes out swinging if anyone menaces him

or his family”.

From the back of the book:

Tobias Richmond is quietly enjoying his retirement – until he plays good Samaritan at his local shops. Soon, he and his family are sucked into the violent world of ruthless drug dealers, police corruption, and competition for the lucrative drugs markets of Southeast Queensland.

This is a fast-paced story about a man drawn, against his will, into fighting for his life and the lives of his family. Not knowing whom they can trust or where to turn for help, the Richmonds face threats to their lives and take on the vicious killers who want what they know.

Peter will be signing books and chatting to visitors at his two local book launches which are open to everyone:

Saturday 18 February from 3pm at Baffies Oan Books, Lifestyle Centre, Samford Valley.

Sunday 19 February from 10am at the Rendezvous Cafe, Dayboro.

SAMFORD’S LOCAL FAUNA

Australian Painted Lady (Vanessa kershawi)

This striking butterfly (wingspan about 45 mm) is widespread in a range of habitats throughout eastern Australia. It emerges first in early spring, but may have several generations in a year. It is a rapid flier (usually below 2 metres), but settles frequently on flowers to feed or to bask in the sun. The males are territorial and will defend their patch from other males.

The Painted Lady is also known for mass migrations, particularly in southern states.

The larva (caterpillar) feeds on a range of plants, but particularly various native daisies such as Billy Buttons (Chrysopetalum apiculatum ) and Golden Everlasting ( Xerochrysum bracteatum ), as well as introduced thistles and other weeds. The larvae to 35mm are brownish with pale yellow lines, with numerous short spines. They hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. The brown pupa (chrysalis) with golden spots is protected by a silken web.

Regretfully the W.I.L.L.S. program run by Annie Lane for high school students with autism at Kupidabin had to close after three years at the end of school term December 2022, due to the slash in funding to the families by NDIS. Annie and her support workers are now going into the homes of the students on the Sunshine Coast giving one on one support.

The autism syndrome students are still our main charity and any donations to help build up our Trust Fund to enable us to set up a scholarship fund for any student who needs financial help to further their career would be much appreciated. A tax receipt would be issued.

Kupidabin Wilderness, 7 Lyell Court are now available for hire during weekdays and weekends for workshops and community activities. Contact Maureen email: info@ kupidabin.org or ph/text: 0402 092 741.

SNOW WOOD

When conjuring an image of the rainforest, tall trees with high, dense canopies come to mind – trees that are too large to contemplate growing in the average suburban garden. Fortunately, there is an abundance of small to medium sized trees with a compact growth habit that are also found in our rainforest and are suitable for the home garden.

The snow wood ( Parachidendron pruniosum ) belongs in this category.

Growing from 6 to 10m tall, it has dense, glossy foliage of compound leaves, each with up to eleven lanceolate leaflets whose tips taper to a point. In summer, it produces green-white flowers that are arranged in a fluffy ball shape on the end of a long stalk. As the flowers age they turn orange/ yellow. These attract bees and the tailed emperor butterfly. The flowers are followed by flattened, highly twisted orange pods which split to expose black seeds. These pods are very decorative and have given rise to an alternative common name – monkey’s earrings. It is a beautiful feature tree, and, because of its habit, it is good in narrow areas as well as fence planting and street planting. It grows well as an indoor potted plant.

Snow wood is closely related to the wattles as seen by the seed pods and the way they split to release the seeds. Like the wattles, they have bacteria living in close relationship in their roots. The bacteria are protected and supplied with carbohydrates by the plant whilst extracting nitrogen from the air which they covert to nitrates the plant needs for protein production.

As a result of this relationship, Snow wood can grow in nutrient poor soils although its

best growth is achieved in well composted, free-draining soil. It will grow in clay soils and is frost-tolerant. Its straight, cylindrical, 35cm diameter trunk provides a decorative, general-purpose timber.

HORSE Geraldine Brooks

I have long been an admirer of Geraldine Brooks’ books, both fiction and non-fiction, usually finishing them in one sitting. I raced through the first half of Horse like Pharlap at the Cup, infatuated by her research, wrapped in her story - then I propped, confronted by the cruelty of racing and the entrenched stereotyping prevalent in racism.

Geraldine Brooks, a white woman born in Australia, weaves a story from the Civil War era in the United States, about the mighty racer and stud Lexington’s bond with his trainer Black Jarret and the lack of recognition Jarret and his father received as people not goods to be owned; together with a Black Lives Matter era romance between Theo, a multiracial PhD student of Art History who discovers a painting of Lexington and Jarret in a rubbish pile,

and Smithsonian scientist Jess, a white Australian reconstructing the amazing racehorse’s skeleton. In a not-so cute meet, Jess accuses Theo of stealing her bike in the first example of stereotyped racism. Their friendship develops as they work together at the Smithsonian, but the confronting shadow of non-acceptance of their relationship haunts them. As the novel reaches its resolution, Brooks starkly reveals the worst aspect of sterotyped racism.

Cultural annexation in fiction is divisive. Brooks acknowledges the risk as Theo’s thesis challenges Frederick Douglass’s argument “that no true portraits of Africans by White artists existed; that White artists couldn’t see past their own ingrained stereotypes of Blackness.” Both Theo’s and Jarret’s characters are flat, as if Brooks is reluctant to give them flaws, while her white characters, including Jess, have faults in feeding-trough loads.

It might have taken me an age to finish this novel, but I’m glad I’ve read it, glad I’ve had time to examine my own stance of the injustices exposed. This novel with black protagonists written with best intentions by a white woman is a step that acknowledges a growing need to destroy stereotypes, to accept people for who they are.

THE WAY IT IS NOW Gary Disher

I have followed Gary Disher’s work since the publishing in 1999 of The Devine Wind , a riveting YA fiction revolving round the evacuation of Japanese families from Broome during World War Two. Disher has published in a range of genres including children’s novels, anthologies of short stories, and historical fiction. The Way It Is Now shows his mastery of rural crime noir.

On Victoria’s Mornington Peninsular in early 2020, Charlie Deravin, a policeman suspended on full pay for striking a superior officer, renews his investigation of the mysterious disappearance of his mother 20 years earlier. His obsession with discovering what happened, helped ruin his marriage and hindered his career.

His life is further complicated by his growing involvement with Anna, a whistleblower who publicly accused a jury of unwillingness to properly consider evidence against an alleged rapist — a promising young footballer with powerful connections to the local police. As his relationship with Anna blossoms, Charlie’s suspicions of some current and former local police, including his father, who were involved in the investigation of his mother’s disappearance, are extended to involve investigators of the rape case as well.

The characterisation is masterful, but the story is not fast paced. It is a why-dun-it rather than a who-dun-it. The motivation for the primary crime is the crux of the novel which explores police corruption, broken marriages and poor communication, subtly leading the reader into the twisted world of those prepared to bend the law.

If you love puzzles and enjoy metaphorically walking through people’s minds, this is for you.

PINE RIVERS UPDATE

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with their families and friends and 2023 has gotten off to a fantastic start.

As always Australia Day played an important part in highlighting what is great about our country and local community - welcoming new citizens and acknowledging many outstanding citizens, heroes, sportspeople and organisations who give so much.

It’s been great to welcome students and staff back to school recently. Over 570,000 students are enrolled in Queensland’s 1,262 state schools in 2023, with four new schools opening their doors for the first time!

More than 55,000 state school teachers have started the year with some of the best pay and conditions in the country thanks to the new pay deal. They will start the term with a pay rise backdated to July 2022. The Palaszczuk Government has delivered an updated and upgraded suite of resources for respectful relationships education in our schools. This will be the first full school year where every classroom, staff room and library in every Queensland state school is air-conditioned.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending the first few weeks of the new year travelling across the state for my Assistant Ministerial portfolio. So far some of Far North, Central Queensland and South West Queensland have been some of the locations I have spent time in. There’s no shortage of partnership projects we are delivering with local Councils across the state, so I am sure 2023 will bring even more progress on that front.

We have a number of grants and funding programs that have opened, outlined below. If you need any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. Pine.rivers@parliament. qld.gv.au or call 3448 3100.

Gambling Community Benefit Fund

The GCBF is Queensland’s largest one-off community grants program and distributes approximately $60 million each year to not-forprofit community groups. The GCBF funding helps these groups to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities. In 2023, the GCBF program has 4 funding rounds available:

1. 1$100,000 super round for all priorities—closes 28 February.

2. $35,000 standard grant round—closes 31 May.

3. $35,000 standard grant round—closes 31 August.

4. $35,000 standard grant round—closes 31 October.

our communities. This program will provide targeted funding to eligible organisations to help the sport and active recreation industry deliver new, upgraded and end of life replacement projects and works which enhance community participation.

Funding available ranges between a minimum of $50,000 (GST exclusive) and up to a maximum of $415,000 (GST exclusive) dependent on the project location.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

I am regularly contacted about the works at the intersection of Mount Samson Road/ Postmans Track/Kobble Creek Road and wanted to update the community on the latest information that I have received regarding the completion of this project.

During construction of the project, it was identified that the road safety barrier located to the north-west of the intersection restricted drivers’ visibility to the north to check for southbound traffic on Mount Samson Road.

Since then, Council has maintained the temporary speed limit whilst further investigations into the design was undertaken. Council has now updated the design and further works to widen the north-west corner of the intersection and relocating the road side barrier will ensure that the barriers do not restrict visibility out onto Mount Samson Road from Kobble Creek Road.

These works will commence in March 2023, and at this stage it is estimated that the works will be completed by the end of April 2023 (weather permitting). The temporary speed limit will remain during this time. Once this work is complete, all temporary restrictions in place at the intersection will be removed and the speed limit through the intersection will be increased to 90km/h.

Following are some questions and answers for the most common requests that I receive. Why were the works originally undertaken?

The intersection upgrade was undertaken to address identified safety concerns where vehicles waiting to turn into Kobble Creek Road and Postmans Track would be located in a shared, high speed traffic lane on Mount Samson Road, meaning there was a risk of high-speed crashes occurring. By introducing additional traffic lanes, the upgrade ensured turning vehicles could wait to turn outside of the high speed traffic lanes. What was the issue that was identified that led to a temporary speed limit reduction?

On review of the intersection at the completion of the works, it was identified that the sight distance from the Kobble Creek leg of the intersection was obstructed as a result of the road safety barriers. This led to providing a below standard sight distance on a high speed road for drivers exiting from Kobble Creek Road onto Mount Samson Road. Why were roadside barriers added to the intersection?

Whenever new road infrastructure is constructed, it needs to be built to the appropriate design standards. Where roadside gradients exceed 1:4, it is necessary

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

to implement roadside barriers in order to limit the possibility of out-of-control vehicles leaving the road at high speed. Why are the roadside barriers causing a problem?

The presence of the barriers, in the context of the steep uphill gradient to the north on Mount Samson Road, means that vehicles entering the intersection from Kobble Creek Road have limited visibility to the north, leading to a risk of accidents if vehicles slowly nudge out onto Mount Samson Road to look around the barrier.

The temporary speed limit at the intersection has been in place for a long time, was this really necessary?

The temporary speed limit that was put in place during the construction phase could not be removed once it became apparent that the roadside barriers were causing problems with visibility from Kobble Creek Road. Council is aware that the maintenance of the temporary speed limit has caused some frustration in the community. However, in these circumstances Council has to promote the safest possible road environment.
