ILLAGE PUMP VThe The

A beautiful Autumn Thursday morning saw thousands of people of all ages descend on our Avenue of Honour to commemorate our fallen and those that continue to serve our nation. The ANZAC spirit lies with these men and women who sacrificed so much for us.

From the Australians who travelled overseas to commemorate, right back here to our own Samford community, the numbers gathering to honour our armed forces increases every year. With all that is happening in our world, perhaps it is this incredible sacrifice of so many, some of whom were still in their teens, that

resonates so deeply. Spending these few hours each year is the least we can do to say thank you.

Attendees gathered along the Avenue to watch and clap as the parade marched past, with Mr Richard Harrison in the lead vehicle and many of our local clubs and groups following to show their support.

Mark Orreal, District President, RSL Qld, representing Samford RSL sub-branch, commenced the service, acknowledging Hon Peter Dutton MP, Nikki Boyd MP, Councillor’s Darren Grimwade and Kath Tonks and other dignitaries. It was a privilege to have Major General Stephen

Day, DSC AM, RSL QLD State President, deliver the ANZAC Day Address.

Introducing General Day, Mark Orreal said, “General Day served in the Australian regular army for 40 years and continues to mentor army brigade commanders. He is an author of the current ADF doctrine on leadership. His service included major conflicts in Africa, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. Major General Day has been formally recognised for his leadership by the Australian, French and United States governments.”

“In 2018, he was asked by the then Prime Minister to return to full time duty to lead the national drought response. General Day has been awarded for distinguished command and leadership in warlike operations and has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia.”

A transcript of Major General Day’s Address and our ANZAC Day feature on Pages 3 - 6.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

Kupidabin Park project

Works have recently been completed at Kupidabin Park, corner of Mt Glorious Road and Corbett Street, Samford Village. The concrete was in need of a facelift, it has been replaced with 80m2 of new concrete with an exposed aggregate finish. A 250m2 area of the park has been cultivated and restored, this included 700 plants and 3 shade trees. The park name sign was relocated as part of the project and future works to complete the facelift will include the installation of concrete cast street lounges.

BMX Track Relocation

The existing BMX track in Uralba Park Samford Valley receives ongoing maintenance and environmental damage from recent floods and weather events. Council has decided to relocate the track to Undambi Rotary Reserve, where it will be built to meet Council’s BMX Track standards. There is already carparking available at the Reserve which is a well-used rest stop for tourists before they continue on their way up the mountain range. The addition of the BMX track will complement the existing facilities and provide a great space for kids of all ages.

Residents and visitors are advised during this time the area will not be operational and for safety reasons, barriers may be installed while works are underway. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the worksite during construction. The completion of this project is due mid-May, weather permitting.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Firstly, I would like to say thank you to all those people who expressed their disappointment when we were advised that we had to get rid of many of our cows. The ranger from the Moreton Bay Regional Council paid us a visit to advise that they had received a complaint regarding the number of animals on our property. It is entirely their right to make a complaint such as this, but I can’t help but wonder about the motivation to do so.

Our beautiful cows were living an idyllic life being hand fed twice a day and moved around different paddocks to make the most of the choice grasses. Often parents and grandparents would stop at the fence with their young children and grandchildren to enjoy the cows and calves.

In previous times there were many properties around Samford which had cows, but they are few and far between now much to the detriment of our rural lifestyle.

With a great deal of sadness, we have had to send several animals to the cattle sales where their future was uncertain with the possibility of ending up in a butcher shop somewhere.

ANZAC DAY ADDRESS

A little over a century ago, 16000 Australians and New Zealanders surged ashore towards the rugged cliffs of the Dardanelles peninsula. More than 8000 would die.

Those original ANZACs fought, endured, suffered and died for something. And the men and women who have come after them, and fought in other wars in other places, fought for the same thing.

That something was you.

They gave freely of themselves for us - the people of Australia. They fought and died so that their children, their mates and their mate’s children could live in a country that was free and fair.

And we are living in a country, our Australia, that is as free, and as fair as any there is.

That is our luck, our plain good luck. We should make something of it. What we make of our today, whether we make or mar this wonderful country that is ours, is up to us.

We have inherited the traditions of every battle in which Australians have proved themselves; the ennobling qualities of self sacrifice, courage, endurance and humour. But we will not be ennobled just because they were. Their example can inspire us, they provide us with a standard. It can be a starting place. But from here on it is what we do that counts.

Think of the soldiers in the badlands of Afghanistan.

Think of what went through their minds, at midnight, as their blacked out helicopters speared them towards their assault objective; deep into the heart of Taliban territory.

They are keyed up, determined to do well. Yet, at the same time they have doubts and fears.

What the hell is this going to be like? Will

I be good enough? Is this the last thing I will ever do? For some it was.

But they overcame those doubts and fears because they put first their responsibility to their mates, their team and their country.

Some of us, as we step up to life’s challenges also have those feelings of doubt and fear. If you do, and even the bravest will, then think of those soldiers in the badlands of Afghanistan.

They did not ask, what is in this for me? They knew there was little in it for them but the likelihood of hardship and a risk to limb and life.

They did not say, I am going to take this easy. Nor did they think near enough is good enough. They were determined to put their utmost of mind, body and spirit into the challenge ahead.

It seems a good approach to take into our daily lives; let us not be afraid to put more into life than we take out.

Today we remember our fallen - in every city and in every town across our big country there are memorials to them.

But there is another memorial, just as important - us, and the way we live our lives. The memorial they would wish for.

The greatness of a nation lies not in its wealth or even its size, but in its national character. Our character.

I like to think that those who laid down their lives for our future are looking down and saying; we did not die in vain, our sons and daughters have made a good thing of the freedom and the land we kept for them.

We can, if we decide to, continue to build an Australia that will be an example to any who cares to look - in freedom, a fair go, respect for all peoples, and honest hard work.

Major General Stephen Day, DSC AM, RSL Qld State President.

ANZAC Day at Jolly’s Lookout Mt Nebo

St Paul’s Anglican Church, led by Parish Priest Revd. Robert Paget, held their traditional dawn Anzac Day Service, following the Anglican history of the Anzac Day Service.

Held at Jolly’s Lookout, approximately 200 people gathered to view the stunning sunrise, as the Last Post and Reveille was played, On Flanders Field recited, with prayers for past and current service men, women and their families who fought and sacrificed in the campaigns involving Australians and Allied forces. Indigenous members of the AIF were also remembered. Despite their service, they did not experience improvement in their treatment back home.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley

ROSEMARY FOR REMEMBRANCE

On the afternoon before ANZAC Day, a group from Samford Valley Rotary Club spent several hours trimming rosemary sprigs and attaching red ribbon and pins, ready for the next day’s commemoration at the Avenue of Honour.

Although many hundreds were made, there are never enough for the large group of people who come from all around to be part of this moving tribute to those who have fought for the freedoms we now enjoy. It is rewarding to have this small offering so well received.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club

Thank you to members and their families who represented SGVPC in marching alongside their community members in the Anzac Day parade at Samford’s Avenue of Honour. LEST WE FORGET.

The Anzac Day afternoon trail ride and BBQ was enjoyed by all that attended and thanks to our instructors who organised this fun ride. A few parents got to join in the fun and head out for a lovely ride with their kids in the local trails surrounding the club.

Next Muster 12th May 8am.

QCWA Samford

April started with sadness for our Samford QCWA members at the passing of our member Alberta. Originally from New Zealand, Alberta joined our CWA branch to meet people within her local community. She had a great sense of humour and was a fascinating storyteller. Alberta thoroughly enjoyed attending our meetings, functions and outings and will be sadly missed.

ANZAC Day Memorial Service at the Avenue of Honour was represented by Vice President Anne who laid a wreath to commemorate the solemn occasion of Anzac Day, a very important day to be involved in our community.

CWA is preparing for our Annual Mother’s Day Raffle. 3 baskets full of Mother’s Day treats will be on display outside Drakes IGA on 9th, 10th and 11th May. Money raised will be distributed to DV Connect, to support people experiencing domestic violence.

Don’t forget our Samford CWA branch for all of your catering needs. We cater for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. Please Call Fiona on 0421 353 272. The CWA air-conditioned Hall is available for hire in Main Street, Samford. Please Call Lilah on 0421 709 723.

produced by the Dayboro War Memorial Association for the Anzac Centenary in 2015.

Thomas Joseph Brundrit was born at Hamilton, North Pine on 15th October 1882 to parents William and Catherine Brundrit (nee McIvor, later Hamilton). His father was the local school master and was transferred when Thomas was young.

He enlisted at Gympie on 22nd September 1914 with the rank of Quartermaster. He embarked from Sydney on 21st December 1914, disembarking in Egypt on 1st February 1915. He landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 20th May 1915. Thomas was promoted to Lieutenant on 1st September 1915. He was made a Temporary Captain on 18th October 1915. On 8th November 1915 Thomas was in charge of an advance party on Harris Ridge, Southern Anzac, when he was killed in action. He was 33 years of age. He was buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Thomas Brundrit’s mother was Catherine McIvor who married Hugh Hamilton. Hugh Hamilton was the Receiving Officer for mail, so the mail came to Hamilton’s. After his death, Catherine was appointed Unofficial Postmistress and the “s” was dropped from the name, hence the district was named Hamilton. Catherine then married William Brundrit, the headmaster of Terrors Provisional School.

Thomas Brundrit was uncle to Hugh Hamilton III, son of his half-brother Hugh

ANZAC LIGHTHORSE PARADE

Hamilton II, who was killed in action on 20 August 1918 (his 31st birthday). He was also uncle to Donald Archibald Bond, son of his half-sister Ann Hamilton, who was killed in action on 19 December 1916, aged 22. Very strong local ties. Hugh and Donald are named on the Dayboro Cenotaph. Carmel Bond

Dedicated local Gabrielle Garnet made the call out again this year for local riders to join in the Lighthorse Honour Parade. Held at midday down Main Street, the parade was a demonstration of respect and gratitude for the amazing bravery and sacrifice of the Lighthorses and their riders. The parade finished at the Avenue of Honour. (Pictured below. Image: Gabrielle Garnet)

BRIAN HANSFORD

1936 – 2024

Brian Hansford died surrounded by family on 25th March 2024, aged 88 years. A remarkable man who was a successful academic, made an impact in the field of education, leadership and mentoring research, published author, volunteer in the wider community, and dedicated to his family.

Brian has been a well-loved character in the Samford district since 1992, when he and his wife Jean settled in Highvale. He was a man that connected with people, a great storyteller with a clever wit and big sense of humour, and an immense capacity to help others. He had wide-ranging interests and extensive knowledge in such areas as Australian native plants, trout fishing, and particularly Australian Rules Football, having been a talented player and coach, and Brisbane Lions supporter.

Brian spent his early working life as a high school teacher in Gippsland, Victoria, before completing a Masters degree at the University of Calgary, Canada, and a Doctorate at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW. He spent periods studying and working in Canada and United States, taking his family with him on these adventures. His final move was to Queensland, where he was appointed Head of the School of Professional Studies, QUT in Kelvin Grove. During his career, Brian supervised and mentored many students and staff and published extensively. He retired from academic life in 2000 and was awarded the title Emeritus Professor.

In retirement, Brian was as hard-working as ever, and wrote four Australian history books recognising the contribution of ‘everyday’ Australians. These books included The Elusive Archibald Young — Tracing his Footsteps in the Moreton Bay

District 1844–1875, which makes significant mention of the Samford Cattle Run, and concluding with Hannah & Friends — Life in South Brisbane, 1843–1870

As a member of Samford Valley Rotary Club from 2001 to 2013, Brian held many positions, from Publicity Officer to President, and was a very active member participating in club projects with energy and enthusiasm. He was involved in the Samford Historical Trail, Music by the Lake, and was regional fundraiser to eliminate

polio across the globe. Many may remember the pancake breakfasts held to help raise funds.

For a number of years, Brian wrote the club’s regular media columns in the Village Pump. Whilst definitely informative, readers were often surprised to find a cheeky turn of humour in these articles. In 2007, he received a Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of his fundraising contributions, and in 2009, his ongoing dedication led to his elevation to PHF (Sapphire).

His wife of 65 years, Jean, and three children, Peta, Craig and Nicole, would like to thank friends and members of the Samford community for their condolences and the caring words expressed about Brian, such as - kind and gentle, intelligent, good listener, leaving big footprints, and being such an exceptional man.

Brian will be greatly missed.

Peta Hansford On behalf of the Hansford family.

LOCAL NEWS

Growing Community

The Samford Edible Garden Trail is nearly here for 2024 and growing your own food – even just a few things – is a very rewarding and worthwhile pursuit! If you’ve ever heard someone say they have a “black thumb”, meaning they aren’t good at gardening, please tell them not to despair. People aren’t born knowing how to keep plants alive; it’s something that’s learned and takes a little time to get the hang of. There are many factors at play, including the season, plant and variety in question, growing medium, aspect, rainfall, just to name a few. But don’t throw in the trowel!

The key is to persist and pick the brains of those local to you who have found their stride. They are usually happy to dissect and discuss your misfires, because every accomplished gardener was once in your shoes (or maybe that should be boots!): a beginner, “green”, and almost certainly suffered numerous failures in the lead-up to finding a way to overcome their specific challenges.

Whether it’s you or a friend looking for tips and ideas that work in our corner of Brisbane, you can experience edible gardens in our gorgeous valley across both days over the weekend of 18 and 19 May. There’s still time to get tickets, however, don’t wait too long as they are selling quickly.

At the Trail, you will be able to explore a selection of inspirational local gardens and learn about wicking beds, raised garden beds, orchards, growing fruits and vegetables, permaculture designs, seed use - and lots more!

You can opt in or out to hear talks from our garden hosts, and meet other passionate gardeners in the community and from further afield. Also, some of our local cafés will again be showcasing food that includes locally grown produce, so there will be plenty of options for picking up something delicious while you’re out and about, hard at work conducting gardening research.

Birdwatching video

On 26 March, a birdwatcher named

Rob Nicholson sent us a link to a fabulous unsolicited video he had made about birdwatching in the Samford Parklands (he walked well beyond the Eco-Corridor, as far as the dog park in the Royal Estates). You can find the video on YouTube: https://youtube/jHcXfjVARts and a link on our Facebook page. We hope you enjoy watching it.

Bushcare

On arrival at our Council-assisted bushcare on Sunday 14 April, we discovered the picnic table, concrete slab and surrounding vegetation covered in thick white dust. It seems that someone had used the table as a workbench for cutting concrete (or similar). Councillor Grimwade’s office is currently investigating on our behalf.

Unfortunately, we again had a much lower than average turnout on what was a pleasant sunny afternoon, which is becoming a concern. Like many community groups, volunteer numbers have not recovered since Covid. Our priority task this month was to plant advanced trees around the picnic table to begin to create the shade lost after a large tree was felled by the January flood on the riverbank below. We also planted and watered a few more trees and shrubs in riverbank rainforest planting P4, where our small weeding team had been busily removing sun and vine weeds that had grown profusely since last month. Afterwards, our volunteers enjoyed the refreshments provided by the SDPPA.

Contractor work on site

With so much weeding work outstanding after the working bee, our contractor Bushtekniq returned on Friday 19 April to sweep through all our revegetation zones for the worst invasive weed species.

Bird survey

During our latest survey on Tuesday 16 April, our team recorded 63 species. Highlights included seeing Spectacled Monarchs foraging in rainforest revegetation zone P2, White-browed Scrubwrens taking a bath at the waterhole, the return of White-throated Treecreeper in riverside she-oaks and watching 17 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos flying gracefully over Mt Samson Road.

We counted a total of 35 Noisy Friarbirds flying north on their Autumn migration. The only remaining summer visitor was Common Cicadabird. You can find full details on eBird. As well as birds, we also saw the uncommon Bordered Rustic butterflies flying around their host plant, Flintwood (Scolopia braunii) that we had planted deliberately for this purpose. We hope that one day the Richmond Birdwing will do a similar thing with its own host vine.

Our next bushcare working bee at the Eco-Corridor will be on Sunday 5 May from 2pm to 4pm (this is a week earlier

than usual because of Mother’s Day). This month we will be focusing on weeding the rainforest revegetation zones. We welcome new volunteers (if you contact us first, we can speed up the on-site induction process).

Senate Inquiry into Aircraft Noise and Mitigation

It was standing room only at the Senate Inquiry hearing in Brisbane on 15th April. Approximately 100 people with about half staying for the whole day. Brisbane Flight Community Alliance’s (BFPCA) Chair, Marcus Foth, Health Expert Dr Sean Foley and I were first to make a presentation and a Q&A session with the four Senators –Matt Canavan, Bridget McKenzie, Richard Colbeck and Larissa Waters - on the panel.

The Senators asked incisive, probing questions and were well informed on the background to the Inquiry, particularly Senators McKenzie and Waters. The Inquiry operates under Parliamentary Privilege and all sessions are recorded and will become part of Hansard.

There was applause from the attendees during and when we finished our presentations and answered questions. In contrast, there was scattered laughter and snickers at many of the inept, slippery responses from Brisbane Airport, Qantas, Virgin, Pilots Federation and in particular the Tourism Industry Representatives.

Professor Quiggan gave the Inquiry a statistical analysis of Brisbane Airports passenger projections and house price impacts for those of us living under flight paths. Professor Morawska spoke about aircraft emissions and particulates. I will follow up with the BFPCA on more

information on these fields for you in the coming months.

The two Community Groups, namely the Chair’s from (AAB) Airspace Advisory Board and (BACACG) Brisbane Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group, were questioned at length about the criticism myself and other community representatives had for their group functions and lack of accomplishments for community. This was not received well by both Chairs. The audience was surprised to learn Mr Brent, Chair of AAB and appointed by the Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, had never met or even spoken to each other before. This further demonstrated Minister King’s refusal to engage with the Brisbane Community.

I took the opportunity to catch Brisbane Airport CEO Mr Gert Jan de Graff and his staffers when leaving the Inquiry. I will be following up with an email on behalf of all of us with specific local issues that must be addressed.

Airservices Australia, not present, bore most of the blame for Brisbane Airport and Airline shortcomings and failures. Senator McKenzie quipped by saying the Committee would need a whole day to cross examine Airservices.

The ‘community open mic session’ at the end was especially important - real people reporting their real, somewhat grim experiences. My impression, despite political differences between the Senators, is that they perceived it as an issue of social justice with serious health consequences.

FRIDAY AT THE SCHUB A WOOLY PROBLEM

Our fingers, tongues and brains are busy - much to make, discuss and plan. Rugs and caps and scarves are being produced at a great rate for those in need and the demand is always there. As a group, we rely on the community’s generosity for the wool to create the warmth for others. If you have any woollen balls, half balls, or scraps of any ply sitting unwanted in a cupboard, we can use them. Nothing of what is donated is wasted - our clever crafters turn it into something. We are the masters of scrap rugs, scarves, beanies, Easter baskets and jazzy Christmas stockings. If you can help, we would be very grateful. Our group meets on a Friday afternoon at 2pm.

Friday 3rd May: noon til 2.00pm, Samford Scribblers, followed by Cuppa and A Chat. Friday 10th May: 3ish, Chair Yoga with Ruth with Cuppa and Chat before and after. Friday 17th May: 2pm Crafting Kindness with Lucie.

Friday 31st May: 3pm Good Stuff discussion group with Jenni with Cuppa and a Chat before it.

Everyone is welcome to any of the afternoons. $2 donation covers costs. Julie Martin

Samford Bowls Club

On Saturday 20th April the K M Smith Cup semi-final Samford and Chermside played for a place in the finals at Northern Suburbs Bowls Club. Samford won all 3 games - Pairs 25-18, Triples 28-21 and the Fours 19-16. Samford played Everton Park in the finals on Saturday 27 April, again at Northern Suburbs Bowls Club. Hopefully in the next edition I will be able to write about our win.

Ladies 2024 Champion of Champion Pairs Final was played on 17th April. Jo Ehrlich (Lead) and Pam Campbell (Skip) defeated Shirley Martin (Lead) and Janice Ridley (Skip) 18 -17. A game of low scores where either team could have won.

Ladies Autumn Pennants semi-final was played at Toombul Bowls Club on Friday 12th April. Samford Owls lost in the playoff against the Toombul Kookaburras for a position to play in the finals for the ‘Plate’. Winners of the finals on 19th April were Chermside Blue (Pennant) and Ferny Grove White (Plate) - well done ladies. This is a competition where ladies from all over the Brisbane District come together at different

bowls clubs for a morning of friendship. Two short games of 9 ends are played with a one end playoff if needed to decide the winner.

The inaugural D’Agular Cup (previously, The Mac Patterson Shield) was played at Dayboro Bowls Club 18th April. This is a competition between Dayboro, Woodford, Kilcoy and Samford Bowls Clubs, with each club hosting a day of competition. It’s great to enjoy the hospitality of our country clubs and experience the different bowling greens. Bowling clubs are the heart of some smaller towns and the different personalities always make for a great day out.

As a footnote to flood story in the previous edition, a graph from the Council’s stream gauge located some 2 kilometres upstream from the club shows the dramatic rise in the rivers water level, rising rapidly to a height of 7.5 meters at the gauging station at a rate of 3 meters per hour. Council’s gauge at Samford Village recorded a height of 4.5 meters, just below the height of Minor Flood level and this flow would have added to the level at the bowls club. You can view the graph on our Facebook page.

Little Green Thumbs and Fairy Doors

The last few weeks have been a hive of activity at Green Thumb Farm. This term, we welcomed back our Mums and Bubs program, as well as introduced a new program called Little Green Thumbs for children aged 2-5 years. It was so lovely seeing the children explore in our newly created sensory garden complete with fruit trees, pollinators, raised beds, musical delights, and of course fairy doors! We are grateful to have the support from the City of Moreton Bay Healthy Active Program to run these weekly programs for the community.

Saturdays are buzzing with life at our new Samford Farm Gate Sales

Together with the Mini Farm Project, we are now selling our Green Thumb Farm organic, regeneratively grown produce to our local community every Saturday morning from 9am - 10am.

Despite the crazy hot summer and the extreme wet weather, our little community farm has shown huge resilience, and our volunteer helpers have shown great tenacity which means we can now pass on some of our abundance of seasonal produce for you to enjoy.

Plus, we kicked off our community nursery a few weeks ago which means that you can now buy our high quality seedlings to put in at your place, making it easy for you to grow food for your family at home. We are only open for sales on Saturdays so make sure to drop in - and also try one of our coffees!

To give you ideas for cooking our delicious local produce, we created a Green Thumb Farm e-recipe book called Seasonal Goodness. You can download it free by clicking this QR code. Thank you for supporting us to continue Growing Good at Green Thumb Farm!

Celebrating Love on Mother’s Day

There are so many emotions tied to being a mum or mum-figure, from celebrating your children’s wins to supporting them when times get tough. We asked some expert mothers and grandmothers residing at local retirement community, Samford Grove, for their take on this sometimes challenging, sometimes rewarding, sometimes joyous and often busy role.

Rosemary Eastaughffe, Betty Belling, Anne Kershaw, Carol Young, Gwenda Hill and Julie Gallway have 14 children and 31 grandchildren between them, and with this experience they know a thing or two about what it means to be a mum. Throughout each of their musings, love remained central to what they enjoy about being both a mother and grandmother.

“My joy is that no matter what age your children are, you are always the mother, and your children keep coming back to you whether they’re young or old,” Rosemary said.

“The emotional connection with my children and the love I get from my

grandchildren is just wonderful,” Betty said.

“I’m lucky I can be a mother and grandmother and I’m able to watch them grow,” said Anne.

“The love you give them and that they give back to you is everything. You have to give it in the beginning to get it in the end,” said Carol.

“I love all the joy you get from watching them go through life and watching them grow,” said Gwenda.

“Both roles are very rewarding. As a mum you share their strengths and weaknesses throughout their journey and being a grandparent is extremely special,” Julie said.

If these ladies could go back in time to give advice to their younger selves or give guidance to anyone else in the midst of bringing up younger children, they would encourage delighting in this time of their lives.

“Enjoy the good times and enjoy your children’s successes. I have a former Olympian daughter who supported me as much as I supported her and I’m forever

grateful for how we worked together,” Rosemary said.

“Take one day at a time and take the time to enjoy being with children,” Betty said.

“Love them and go with the times. Things change and it’s different now to when I was younger; you need to go along with change,” Anne said.

“Enjoy the journey as they go through life; there’s lots to enjoy,” Gwenda said.

“It’s important to keep open lines of communication and trust between yourself and your children and sometimes you need to step in and be the parent. But you always need to reaffirm everything with love; love remains central,” said Julie.

“Give lots of hugs, even when they’re frustrated. Hugs show your love for them and gives kids a sense of self-worth. My grandchildren love playing tricks on me and I love playing the fool for them. The love you give comes back to you,” Carol said.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful mums and mum-figures; there is so much community love and appreciation for all that you do!

Rotary Club of Samford Valley

THANK YOU SAMFORD!

What a fantastic turnout we had last Friday for the “March Against Malaria” in Samford! This was a great example of the Samford community working together for a very important cause.

The Rotary Club of Samford Valley teamed up with Samford State School to hold this Australia-wide event to raise awareness of the impact of malaria around the globe. It is part of a Rotary campaign to “Finish-the-Fight” and contribute to malaria elimination. Samford Rotary’s Club President, Rob Robinson said: “The event was a great success, and we are very pleased with the funds raised, thanks to our local community.” Mr Robinson said these funds will go directly to the group called “Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) FinishThe-Fight” for the purpose of saving lives, raising awareness and funds for malaria eradication. They raise funds for their malaria elimination programs with local communities in the Western Pacific Rim of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.

The Earlyact Club of Samford State School (a Rotary-sponsored lunchtime club committed to community charity projects) collaborated with Samford Rotary to organise this event. Many of the students and their parents, as well as teachers, met at John Scott Park in Main Street, and after a couple of brief talks, they marched 1.7km to the school, waving the placards and banners made by the children. Many local community members joined in, including the “Samford Strollers” who chose the March as their walking route on that day.

Guest speakers shared their knowledge and experiences of malaria and the need to support our near neighbours and eliminate malaria. Local Rotarian, Dai Mason, (a RAM Global Board Member and Past Rotary District Governor), spoke about the importance of this problem, globally.

“A Child dying from malaria every 68 seconds is not acceptable, we must do more to change this!” he said.

He was followed by Lara Tribel (a Preservice teacher from ACU at Banyo) who shared her recent experiences in the Solomon Islands, as part of her community engagement placement. Lara said: “During my time there I saw the devastating effects malaria had on the people,” she said. Lara

was very keen to support the cause and help raise awareness and much-needed funds.

If you would still like to donate, you may do so via the website https://finish-the-fight.

ROAD WORKERS’ HUT

From the 1940’s until 2008, the hut was used by Council employees who were employed at the Pine Rivers Council’s Samford Depot. The hut was located near Creek Street in Samford Village. The cement bunkers, which were used to store road-based products required for road construction, were actually situated on the grounds of the Museum. This area is now used to exhibit a variety of timber and samples of timber merchandise, which includes old peddle sewing machines from long ago, the toy section, and the work/ storeroom.

The road-working gangs were needed to work on specific large road jobs, which required them to live away from their normal homes and families. They received a “living away from home allowance” to compensate for expenses such as food, rent, and other costs associated with their jobs.

The small hut lacked the comforts of home. I am positive they displayed photos of loved ones, either in a frame or added to the once bare walls. The workers spent

a week on the job or travelled home on Sundays if they desired. More than likely a considerable distance from home.

The hut contained single beds, each with a wire base; the covers were whatever was available. Cooking equipment, maybe a small table and chairs, a billy and enamel mugs (a sign of the times), and a big pot for cooking a tasty stew. Ingredients of some sort were brought from home, or perhaps meat captured from the local surroundings. And why not a few packs of cards to play in their down time? It was their home away

from home for whatever period of time.

They were the survivors. The backbone of our Australia. Working under all types of conditions just to achieve things so we could enjoy their toils. The current road workers, or are they now called engineers, reside in more comfortable accommodations - and the work has not gotten any easier.

The Workers’ Hut is now located at our Museum, displaying some of the lifestyle of years gone by, plus some modern cons scattered around. A wood stove, a very comfortable squatter chair, a refrigerator and a few other decorations add to the homely atmosphere. The photos were strategically placed throughout, not to mention two beds.

The plaque displayed at the front of the building recognises that the hut was a 2008 project that received funds from the local retirement village for its removal and restoration.

The Museum opens each Wednesday and Sunday from 10am – 4pm. Adults: $5; children: $1.

Without a doubt the best pizza ever. Once you’ve had it, you’ll never go back to the others. Seafood pizza.

The BEST pizza and pasta my family and I have ever had! We have at least four pizza shops within a 5-7 minute radius of us but choose to drive 15 mins to order from Samford Gourmet Pizza. Always fresh, hot, made with love and care, the service is always great, they have a rewards system that actually rewards the customer! All of the amazing things! We are so grateful to have found this shop! Best pizza I’ve ever eaten. Big call - but Samford Gourmet Pizza consistently delivers awesome pizzas every time. If I could leave a 10 star review I would, pizza and service = exceptional. Well done team! Appreciated.

BIT SUS AT THE PUB

There’s at least two reasons to go to the Samford Pub on Tuesday 7 May at 5.30pm. Both of them are more than a little bit ‘sus.’ If you want to know the latest and greatest about what’s going on sustainability wise in the region then it’s the place to be.

Or if you have an idea or a business or a project or simply a mystery idea about what could be done to improve the sustainability of the community or planet, then come along to test the idea on others in a supportive environment.

The Council’s innovation arm, Innovate Moreton Bay, is organising for some sharp presentations on all things sus/tainable and the night will be flexible enough to hear from our community about what locals are doing or planning to do. Even if you just turn up on the night, your idea or current activity will be found a space to be presented in a way that invites great feedback in an ‘Open Mic’ format.

Samford’s own Green Street and Sustainable Business Network will be presenting, as will at least two other local enterprises, and there’s others from the region as well.

If you’d like to know more or register interest for this free event, please contact Steve Butler from Innovate Moreton Bay on 0412 911 546 or steve.butler@mbrit. com.au. Alternatively contact the Samford Sustainable Business Network on 0407 190 162.

NOVEL IDEAS WIN AWARDS

With her debut novel, Memories Don’t Lie winning three 2024 BookFest Awards in the categories of YA – Science Fiction, Sci-fi – Action/Adventure, and Sci-fi – Genetic Engineering, as well as being a 2023 Indies Today Awards semi-finalist, local author Pauline Yates found herself almost lost for words with these recent accolades.

“To win not one but three first place awards in my book’s genres is mindblowing, especially for a debut novel,” she said.

“I was relieved that the book I spent so many years slaving over and believing in has been judged worthy of its genre against hundreds of other entries. It may take me a while to come down from this happy cloud, but I don’t think I want to.”

Pauline is no stranger to praise for her writing. Her award-nominated short stories include Blood Born (Aurealis Awards Best Horror Short Story – finalist), The Best Medicine (Shadows Awards Horror Short Story – shortlist), and What It Means To Be With You (Shadows Awards – Poetry – shortlist).

She found herself drawn to the horror genre due to its broad content, which allows her to explore emotional extremes.

“Horror comes in all forms, for example supernatural, environmental, dystopian, apocalyptic, psychological, crime. But at its heart, horror evokes a strong sense of fear or dread. Many fairy tales and fables fall into the horror genre, like Grimm’s fairytales, or it could be as simple as the lights going out and a shadow moving in the corner and you’re not sure if something’s there

or if it’s your imagination playing tricks on you,” Pauline said.

“The emotional response can range from unease and uncertainty to lung-busting screaming and I love delving into the depths of those emotions so readers can experience the exhilaration of sheer terror from a safe distance.”

The science fiction genre provides Pauline with a range of real-time and futuristic possibilities.

“It’s the ‘what if’ scenario of genres, the only boundary being how far you can stretch your imagination. It can be grim, uplifting, educational, or enlightening, and encompasses an alternative or speculative view about the world we live in, our future, or the worlds we create.”

Pauline’s short story The Best Medicine also won the Robert N Stephenson Short Story and Flash Fiction Contest, with her work then being selected for an Italian translation. Riflessi di Lunare in Italy chose this story partially because they loved the isolated setting which was based on our local D’Aguilar Range.

Also venturing into poetry, Pauline’s poem, What It Means To Be With You published last year was shortlisted for the 2023 Australasian Shadows Awards, with the winner to be announced later this year. If writing award-winning novels wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Pauline is also known locally as the woman behind EquiRug, a local horse rug wash and repair service which she has been operating for over 30 years.

“During that time I must have rugged half the horses in the Valley. That was before the influx of cheap rugs onto the market and some customers still have rugs I made them from over 20 years ago,” Pauline said.

Equi-Rug has drop off/pick up points at Brookies (formerly Gleam O’ Dawn), Dayboro Produce, and Horse & Co.

“I focus more on the washing and repairs rather than making new rugs now and I take pride in my speedy turnaround times. Unfortunately, our lovely Valley is also the home of Qld Itch, so I am well aware of how important it is to get a rug washed, repaired and back on the horse ASAP.”

Pauline has more short stories coming out soon as well as a sci-fi/horror novella to make the back of your neck prickle. To keep up-to-date with everything she does visit: https://paulineyates.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ midnightmuser1/ https://www.facebook.com/EquiRug/ Tanya Hall

Samford Area Mens Shed OUT &

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Ken!

He freely admits to most likely being the real reason Safety Regulations became mandatory in the aircraft industry. As a talented pilot for almost as long as flying machines have been invented, he has seen it all, done it all and is now reliving it all through his hilarious, and sometimes scary, tales at the Shed on Friday arvos. His passion was sparked while heavily into home-made rockets as an invincible teenager, and he says it’ll cost you a nice cold beer if you want to count the scars. Not surprisingly, now in retirement he uses the same Gung Ho attack strategy with his new toys: tractors, chain saws, quad bike and flame thrower.

When not intentionally tempting fate, he loves to drive out of his way for a yummy Malaysian / Thai / Vietnamese lunch, where he practices the language skills picked up during his globe trotting career. It’s amazing how a simple “Table for one, thanks,” or

“Where’s the toilet?”, spoken in what you thought was the staff’s native tongue, can get you an extra chilli in your laksa, a fork for your noodles or the security guy

cracking his knuckles behind you. Ken has discovered that it helps to show off your Kiwi accent, provided you grin a lot and your teeth don’t have too many shallot bits between them.

On his Highvale property, you’ll often spy him joyfully running back and forth chasing the cows and chooks, yet most of his time is spent trying to fix machinery that wasn’t broken that morning, but thanks to him definitely is now. The repair shop owners see $$$$$ when Ken walks in the door. But as he says, you never know how much work you can get out of a machine, or how much fun, until you push it way past its limit and keep on pushing harder. Learning on the job is a lost art.

He likes welding busted equipment, he likes whacking golf balls, he likes keeping giant pythons in the roof of his shed and walking his dogs along the creek every day. If only life in the real world was that simple, hey Ken.

A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The Samford RDA Centre at Samford Showgrounds has once again achieved Centre of Excellence accreditation by Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia (RDAA).

RDAA Assessor, Sally Watson from Victoria, visited the centre last month to complete the three-yearly check of facilities and operational standards. She reviewed practices in governance, participant management, property management and horse health and welfare management. It is the third time the centre has received the highest level of accreditation.

Samford RDA is a charity which is part of a large network of affiliated RDA centres operating under the Riding for the Disabled Association of Queensland (RDAQ) and RDAA governing bodies. The title of ‘Centre of Excellence’ reflects exceptional standards and confirms that Samford RDA meets all the strict requirements.

Samford RDA President Michael Costello said the result was due largely to the commitment of volunteers and local community support.

“There is a need in the Moreton Bay City Council and Brisbane City Council areas for disability support services. We fill part of that need and depend on the ongoing support of volunteers, the Council and local contributors.”

Local contributions include centre and horse sponsorships, donations and in-kind support. Recently The Gap/Ashgrove Lions paid for a saddle, associated gear and a horse first aid kit. This generous contribution, which is greatly appreciated, was organised through Lions member and RDA volunteer Donal Smith.

DICKSON NOTES

Thank you to everyone who attended an Anzac Day Ceremony or Service in our community. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to the ADF men and women currently serving and our veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

Red Shield Appeal

I would like to encourage local residents to once again be involved with the Salvation Army’s biggest fundraising event of the year, the Red Shield Appeal and Doorknock. These funds are vital to meet the needs for the Salvation Army’s many community service programs from aged care, youth homelessness, counselling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, employment services - just to name a few. The Salvation Army helps more than one million disadvantaged Australian’s each year.

For more information or if you would like to assist with or make a donation to the appeal, please visit: www.salvationarmy. org.au/red-shield-appeal/ JDRF visit

It was wonderful to join families and advocates for a morning tea in Albany Creek in support of JDRF Australia, sporting my JDRF socks from long-time volunteer Alyssa!

I’m proud to have served in a government that made it easier and cheaper for young Australians to live with Type-1 diabetes. I will continue to work with local JDRF families in their efforts towards a world without T1D.

CEDAR CREEK BUSHCARE

Helping the Bush Regenerate Itself. After a delicious breakfast of egg pies, our April meeting of bushcare began with planting out Lomandra behind the new toilet block at Andy Williams Park. We then moved up along the creek bank to continue our work removing fishbone ferns. We have noticed many native species pop up since we have been clearing the weeds out of this area.

Seeking Additional Volunteers

New volunteers are always welcome to our friendly group. No experience is necessary, you work at your own pace and the knowledge gained identifying what is a weed, and the many wonderful native species, can be used in caring for your own back yard.

If you are looking for a hobby, just want to catch up with a few friendly locals, or can get a few hours off work by doing a volunteer program, we are the group for you. All tools and insurance are provided by MBRC.

We meet every second Thursday of the month 8:30am to 10:30am at Andy Williams Park, Cedar Creek. Our next meeting is Thursday 9th May. Best of all we start with a free homemade breakfast! Please phone Fiona on 0421 071 412 with any queries.

Do rodents pester you? Would you prefer an environmentally safe control instead of dangerous poisons?

Then come to our meeting on Tuesday, 7 May in the CWA Hall, Main Street Samford, at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start, and visitors are welcome. Learn how to use nature’s efficient biological controls: their predators, the barn owls, from our fascinating guest speaker, Stefan Hattingh, Senior Environment Officer with the City of Moreton Bay Regional Council. Stefan will have two special guests to introduce: Poh, the Boobook owl, who attended his acclaimed presentation at the Samford Eco-Corridor 10th Anniversary celebration last November at the Samford Community Hub, and Anthony, a frogmouth.

Stefan’s great passion for over 25 years is taking environment education to organisations, school groups, and the public, making it fun and very enjoyable. He holds a Masters of Environment Studies from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Stefan has worked as an ecology lecturer in conservation at Nelson Mandela University and as a Landcare Manager for Bulimba Creek Catchment. Now, with our Council, he continues to offer workshops to Land for Wildlife and Bushcare groups. Poh and Anthony come with his other favourite passion, where he rescues and treats owls as a registered carer with Wildlife Rescue Queensland.

Two pertinent handouts will be available. One is on Anticoagulants and Rodenticides, their unintended harm to wildlife, pets and children, and safe alternatives, such as nesting boxes for owls, from Birdlife Australia and the NSW Wildlife Council. It has a downloadable poster showing that yours is a poison-free, owl-friendly garden and links to other relevant sites. Another is by Stefan, titled Owls and Their Ability to Control Rodents. It has details for making a barn owl nesting box.

Our meeting proceeds with its agenda, a show and tell activity on interesting plants or weeds we encourage members to bring in, and Stefan’s presentation with supper afterwards. Bring a little cash for raffle tickets to win a prize you choose from several donated native plants.

Besides the plants with specific habitat contributions mentioned in his March talk, The Lantana Dilemma, Peter Storer considers native raspberries a suitable replacement for lantana. Rubus parvifolius, R. probus, and R. rosifolius are suckering shrubs with good fruit seasonally or all year and are worth trying in South East Queensland.

TWILIGHT YEARS EXPO

Friday 17th May

10am to 3pm

Hills PCYC Everton Hills

The Seniors Committee of the Hills and District Chamber of Commerce will be staging this FREE event after an overwhelming number of requests to make this an annual event. A program is being finalised and this year the committee is very fortunate to have Brisbane’s own, Rebecca (Bec) Wilson coming along. Bec is a journalist, broadcaster and expert on all things “retirement”. Her bestselling book, How to Have an Epic Retirement, has now received international acclaim. Bec will be talking about her book as well as meeting and listening to attendees.

Fitness in mind and body are key factors in achieving a happy and successful retirement. To keep the body going, there will also be a number of exhibitors including

PCYC, demonstrating the new rage to sweep Australia, Pickle Ball. Jillian Warren will be demonstrating her moves with Yoga Sol and you’re invited to join in. Enhance Fitness will be advising on a whole range of fitness initiatives too.

U3A, Creative Samford, Samford and District Historical Museum, Samford Area Men’s Shed, and Samford CWA are only some of the many exhibitors who will be there to share how their members keep their minds active. Many other exhibitors will cover, gardening, photography, local and family history and many more opportunities you can undertake whilst enhancing your knowledge and skills.

There will be a wide range of community organisations ready to welcome you, share friendship and let you know about their volunteering opportunities to make great use of your lifetime of acquired experience, knowledge and skills.

If you’re keen for some travel tips, Luke Ballard from Epic Travel and Cross Country Tours will be on hand to get you to those places you’ve always wanted to visit.

This year, the Seniors committee are supporting 4 Voices and the Coffee Brigade in the great work they are doing with those in need. This event will be a collection point for toiletries to be distributed so if you have those in your cupboard, they would be appreciated.

The Hills Chamber Seniors Committee and over 40 exhibitors look forward to welcoming you on 17th May. Look out for our flyers throughout the Hills District and Samford with further information.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO A NEW ROOF

Moving closer to the goal of renovating the heritage-listed St. Matthew’s Anglican Hall in Church Street Mitchelton, represents a significant stride for our community. The Church Hall and its roof are in need of significant repairs and replacement. The recent car boot and garage sale was a resounding success raising over $9000. However, the task ahead is substantial. Restoration and maintenance of St. Matthew’s Anglican buildings require not only financial resources but also the contribution of time and trade skills. As a small but dedicated church community, we rely on the support of individuals who

can offer their expertise and time towards this project. If you possess trade skills or know someone who does, we encourage you to reach out to the parish office. Your assistance to address issues such as roof repairs, termite damage, and repainting would be invaluable. Please contact the Parish office on 3851 0526.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported us thus far. Together, we can preserve our heritage and strengthen our community for generations to come.

WHISTLING PAST THE GRAVEYARD

26 May 2024

This event offers the unique thrill of sharing stories and songs with community in the beautiful surrounds of Moreton Bay’s historic cemeteries. For something completely different, why not spend some time with Doctor Cotterell aka Leah and Mistress McCoy aka Narelle, learning about the Irish Banshee, humanist funerals, wild wake rituals, and why every funeral needs the right song.

Leah will be familiar to many as an accomplished jazz singer and songwriter. A ‘Women in Voice’ regular, Leah has brought her warm soulful voice to many styles. Her musical memoir ‘The Pleasure of Sad Songs’ was the subject of a 2015 ‘Conversations’ interview on ABC Radio National.

Narelle is a writer, musician, academic, archivist and researcher. She is a lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University as well as presenting at international conferences on the topic of the Irish wake ritual, death and Irish mythology.

In ‘Whistling Past the Graveyard’ Leah and Narelle draw from their written memoirs

and academic research to reflect on funerals, from the truly sad to the sublime and uplifting. The music is as eclectic as the subject matter, ranging from classical and folk song to emblematic pop songs and of course, together we will sing ‘Amazing Grace’.

‘Whistling Past the Graveyard’ debuted to a great response at the historic South Brisbane Cemetery in the program of the Anywhere Festival in 2023. This year will take the team to Lawnton and Samford Cemeteries to weave in stories about these atmospheric sites.

BOOK LOVERS

Children’s Book Council of Australia

Short List 2024

Established in 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) is a not-forprofit, volunteer run organisation which aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. This year, from 656 entries across six categories, 36 quality Australian children’s books are celebrated. This year’s shortlist includes a number of dynamic debut authors (including Brisbane’s Megan Williams whose YA novel Let’s Never Speak of This Again won the 2022 Text Prize), alongside some of the most experienced names in Australian children’s literature.

OLDER READERS for 13 to 18 year-olds

A Hunger of Thorns by Lili Wilkinson, is a fantasy resonating with our uncertain times. Maude’s quest goes into deep, dark, festering places then comes back out into the light.

Grace Notes by Karen Comer is a verse novel about the meeting of a busking violinist and a street artist during the pandemic.

Inkflower by Suzy Zail, is a true story of how Lisa’s dying father, a survivor of Auschwitz, reveals his secret, making Lisa face her own.

Let’s Never Speak of This Again by Megan Williams. A highly readable coming-of-age debut novel that captures some of the traditional hardships teens experience. The narrative follows the central character Abby, over a year as she navigates change and her own insecurities. Told in a modern diary-esque style, the novel explores the challenges of relationships and dealing with tragedy and loss.

The Quiet and the Loud by Helena Fox, is a confrontational novel about George facing her estranged father and the past, helping a pregnant friend and a mate distraught over climate change, and looking after her forgetful grandfather as wildfires threaten her community.

Two Can Play That Game by Leanne Young, is a deliciously nerdy romance novel about the intense competition of Aussie

Asian gaming and finding your own life path.
