A night of energy and enthusiasm hosted jointly by the SDPPA and Community Bank Samford on 16th August, saw more than 85 people come together to brainstorm ideas for future projects for Samford and surrounds at a facilitated Community Forum. Guests from local community groups, businesses and churches were invited as representatives of their communities, for the first stage of what is hoped will be a larger community collaboration. Discussions were focused on projects that could be considered for co-funding by the SDPPA and the bank, or possible seed funding for larger projects that would also require support from various levels of government. The community representatives on the night were asked to prioritise the ideas discussed. A survey was emailed to all attendees with the results currently being analysed. Feedback from the night as well as the results of the survey will be shared with the wider community in the coming weeks. The next steps for engagement and consultation will be expressions of interest sought from anyone in the local community interested in forming working groups to progress the ideas further. Back in 2010, the Board of the Samford Community Bank hosted an event, seeking ideas from the Samford Community which would serve our great community for the long term. Similarly, many will recall the Samford Futures project back in 2013, which grew out of an idea from the community and was taken on as an initiative of the SDPPA. It aimed to gain consensus about a vision for the Valley that reflects the strengths, beliefs, needs and aspirations of theThecommunity.SDPPAand the Community Bank Samford Board look forward to what comes from this new list of ideas and in turn, the future of our community. We will keep you updated in future editions and through our social media pages.

ILLAGEThe We are thrilled to let you know that after 3 years of amazing work which began prior to covid, the State Library of Queensland has finished the immense task of digitising every edition of The Village Pump back to the first edition in 1977. We first started talking about this project with the Library in November 2019, so this has been quite a long haul - extended by substantial periods of COVID and flood related library closures and the Library’s move to a new digital archive. We are so grateful to Specialist Librarian Libby Fielding and Gavin Bannerman, Director, Queensland Memory and his team who championed this project. Thanks to SDPPA member David Bannerman who facilitated the introduction that kicked it all off. You can now search each edition at: viewer/283363379.https://collections.slq.qld.gov.au/

LOCAL NEWS Hayley

CHANGES AFOOT Dear Samford Valley Community, it is with a very heavy heart that, after 11 years as Founder and President, I announce my time has come to step away from the SSN. Most of you will be aware that the SSN has been my primary focus and passion, since founding the organisation in 2011. The service that the SSN provides, thanks to each and every one of you, means that so many people in our wonderful community can get the care and support they need whilst receiving the benefits of human connection.TheSSN is such an important part of my life and this has not been a decision that I’ve taken lightly or made swiftly.

Unfortunately, my work commitments have changed and my new full-time role requires more international travel. This means time away from Samford and time away from the level of commitment required for the SSNOurpresidency.nextAGM, to be held on Saturday 1 October, provides the opportunity for a fresh team to sculpt and grow the SSN. Our other Management Committee members (Mercedes, Steve and Damian) have also made the difficult decision to step down at this AGM. We realise this is not ideal to have all MC members step down at the same time, it is unfortunately the way it is due to individual members circumstances. All four current MC members have enjoyed and valued their time on the MC and highly recommend others think about stepping up into these roles. The Samford community is very lucky to have the SSN in place as a support network - it has often been referred to as a life saver.

| Mortgage Broker

I am sincerely hopeful that either some of our members, or people from the broader community, will be able to continue this important service for our 200+ clients.

If you, or anyone that you know, is interested in leading the SSN, then I encourage you to nominate for a Management Committee position. If the SSN does not fill the President, Treasurer and Secretary positions (minimum requirement) then sadly, the service will cease operations. Obviously, this is something that I don’t want to see happen and I hope that the organisation can welcome new people to the management roles, with fresh ideas and direction, so that it continues to succeed well into the future. Myself, as well as the other Management Committee members, will be available to transition to a new team and provide support on an ongoing basis if required.

violinist Gloria Foley travelled to Camp Mountain to try ten of Tom’s violins, saying, “they are more than very good. One in particular, a violin with a belly of European wood and the remainder of Australian timbers, was excellent.”

By the time he was 89, Grandfather Tom had constructed 100 violins and violas and a half-size cello, which he added to his collection or gave away. During World War II he donated a number of these instruments to the Red Cross. Not restricting himself to stringed instruments, he also donated over 1,000 handmade walking sticks to convalescent warBushwhackingveterans. to make violins and mobility aids was not without its dangers however, after Tom severed two toes and partially severed a third when a piece of wood rolled under his foot as he was chopping it. Again Tom’s concept of limitations meant this was no obstacle. He promptly removed the partially severed toe and applied Stockholm tar to the affected areas which healed without further medical assistance.Tomwas known for singing while he worked, understanding that a secret to happiness was to be busy at something he loved. Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022 FATHER’S DAY SUNDAY 4 SEPTEMBER

Celebrating Father’s Day With ‘Grandfather’Samford’s Father’s Day on Sunday 4 September provides an opportunity to appreciate the generous natures of our local dads, granddads and father-figures and indulge them in getting away with a few dad-jokes. It also gives us an opportunity to share the story of a historically well-known and loved personality known to everyone in Samford in the mid 1900s as “Grandfather”. Tom Richards was born in 1866 in Camp Mountain where he worked as a banana farmer. After retiring at the age of 65, his real story began. Tom spent the next 30 years handcrafting violins and walking sticks from wood he sourced locally, losing toes along the way, without any musical background, and with his left hand turned almost back-to-front due to a badly-set broken bone. Tom had been told that a violin could have no tonal quality unless it was made from imported timber. Evidently not one to understand the concept of limitations, Tom set about studying craft books to teach himself how to carve and assemble violins. He used timbers including pink ash, Queensland pine, silver ash, wattle, sandalwood and tulip wood; harnessing hair from his draft horses’ tails for the bows. “Each fiddle I have made I designed myself. I have never copied any other maker,” he said in a newspaper article in 1957.Musicians who played his resulting instruments acclaimed their tone and craftsmanship, equating them to many top EuropeanQueenslandmakes.concert

“When I started playing at Samford Rangers I knew almost nobody in the Samford Valley. Karen knew school parents from Samford State School and had built a group of local ‘mum friends’, but I would disappear into Brisbane for work and then home with her and the kids; after living here for almost nine years I actually knew almost nobody from our community.” “Now I have a huge network of locals I know, and a large group of local blokes I’m mates with. I hadn’t realised how much I missed ‘bloke time’ until I had it again. When I duck down to Drakes it can sometimes take me 45 minutes to get back to the car because I run into so many people I know!”

Further supporting the benefits that the club provides to the community, Andrew and Karen’s printing business, Worldwide Queen Street CBD, has been a Silver Sponsor of the Samford Rangers in 2020-22 and will be a Gold Sponsor for the 2023-25 seasons.

Andrew is dad to Milly (15), James (13) and Grace (11), all of whom play or have played at the club, creating opportunities for him to step into the role of coach and referee.“Iabsolutely love being part of creating a positive team spirit, within which, the kids feel free to stretch their limits, enjoy exercise and the outdoors, and to have a heap of fun overcoming challenges and improving,” he said.

Robbo is just one of many dads and parents who volunteer their time each week to facilitate fantastic outdoor opportunities for others. Happy Father’s Day!

“Our club fulfills an incredibly important role in our community; it provides health and fitness, outdoor activities, social opportunities and all of the character building that comes with learning, trying, practising, being tested and being part of a team for over 800 players across more than 600 families. Think about that for a moment, that is a huge impact!” he said. “I find it extremely rewarding to play a small part in bringing those benefits to all those families.”

“Our three kids are also experiencing this enjoyment; they are at the club at 8:15am every Sunday to help with the club’s Miniroos kick-off program for the 3-5 year olds. They absolutely love it, and the little kids have a blast.”

credits his involvement in the club for a sense of local connection and fulfilment that comes with being active with a group of mates, and is grateful to his wife Karen for kicking him out of the house one Monday night to join a Masters training session at Harold Brown Park.

A Dad of Players As a parent, player, coach, manager, coordinator, sponsor and referee at the Samford Rangers Football Club, Andrew “Robbo” Robertson has been kicking goals for the community for the last eight years, and represents everything we want to celebrate about Father’s Day. He is currently the Masters Coordinator, as well as Assistant Coach for two of the club’s younger teams, but rates “Dad of Players” as the best role of “Robbo”all.

From previous page One of Tom’s violins can be seen at the Samford Museum, donated by Ruth Monro who was given the violin at the age of 9 from Tom himself. She recalls Tom and her grandfather George McLean as being the best of friends with Tom spending many Sunday afternoons on their veranda playing tunes on one of his “fiddles”.

INDIGENOUS CARE AND ANIMAL WELFARE Wayne Coolwell is on a mission which he hopes will benefit both animals and indigenous people. A Mununjali man from Beaudesert who now lives in Ocean View, Wayne is looking to lease 15 -25 acres of farming land to provide care for farm animals who have done their time and are of no more use to farmers, and at the same time improve the lives of incarcerated indigenous people. The land will be used to create a haven where animals will be cared for by low-risk indigenous prisoners or parolees who would come to the farm to be re-skilled. With a farm management team and volunteers, Wayne believes that connecting animals and people in this way will help to build confidence and skills, reducing the risk of re-offending.According to ABS, between 30 June 2020 to 30 June 2021, the total number of prisoners in Queensland increased by 15% (1,295) to 9,952. This was the largest annual increase, both numerically and proportionally, of any of the states and territories. Sadly, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners increased by 15% during the same period (441) to 3,479, more than a third of the total prison population. This is a shocking statistic that Wayne wants to change and while he accepts there will be plenty of challenges along the way, he believes this idea canWaynework.is a former journalist and has been involved in animal welfare for about 30 years. His love for animals and his sadness at the increasing incarceration of indigenous people is his motivation to make a difference.

“There’s been a long association of indigenous people with animals on country for thousands of years. Animals have always paid an important role for our people as totems and as a food source. Programs like this have worked in other states,” he said. Initially, the work undertaken would include building fences, feed sheds and housing and Wayne has been speaking to Qld Corrective Services about the potential for rehabilitation of prisoners under supervision with this project. His plan is for the first stage to not only include indigenous people, but also community groups and volunteers who would be willing to come together to start the develoment process and bring Wayne’s vision to life. Down the track, there would be potential to incorporate students who could come on tours, learn about caring for animals, indigenous care and conservation principles. All he needs is to find someone willing to lease their land and work with Wayne to give animals and parolees a second chance of life, so the healing work can start. GoFund Me, community support and Government support are all being investigated to make this project a reality.

‘Don’t Ever Think All Is Lost’, or DETAIL, provides an empowering community for those experiencing anxiety and depression. The initiative was founded by Kim Garthwaite, a mental health nurse, clinical nutritionist, yoga teacher and Beyond Blue speaker, after her own experience struggling with severe depression.Kimwasthe mother of young children and working as a registered nurse when unresolved past trauma triggered a mental health collapse and she was hospitalised for nearly a year. Her mental health battle continued for the next eight years, with doctors eventually saying there was nothing else they could do for her. At one point Kim was taking 18 pharmaceutical drugs a day and facing her 34th ECT (shock treatment) with no end in sight. “Seeing a loved one experiencing a mental illness can be heartbreaking. Family and friends often don’t know how to respond, especially to the duration of the illness. SING IT SAMFORD! Free Workshop

PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING

Learning the Basic Principles in combination with the basic exercises, allows the participant to gain strength and flexibility over time. With this progressive understanding and gained core strength, an ability to achieve the exercises demanding greater control, balance and flexibility is achieved. We address postural needs and body alignment relevant to the exercises, therefore creating awareness around how participants hold and move their bodies on a day to day basis. We encourage our clients to practise one or two exercises, relevant to their needs, at home. When this is taken on, a remarkable increase in postural awareness and strength is gained. This awareness remains with the client even if they do not continue attending classes.Pilates created his mat exercises to be used on a daily basis without the necessity of equipment. Along with other common sense thoughts around health, he offered the interested person a way of staying independently healthy in body, mind and spirit. At Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing, we aim to continue his philosophy. Beginner’s classes run on Wednesday and Thursday at 9am. If you are interested in an evening Beginners class, please contact Dorothy on 0432 269 472.

Why attend a beginners Pilates Mat class?

The aim of our Beginners mat class is to provide the attendee with knowledge and understanding of the 12 Basic Principles applied when executing the exercises created by Joseph Pilates. These Principles are the cornerstone of all the exercises.

Come along to a free workshop on Saturday 24 September at Samford Farmers Hall. The workshop will be led by local resident and choral professional Nick Tyler.

During the latest monthly survey of the Eco-Corridor on 31 July, our birders recorded 62 species. Highlights included a large number of Silvereyes (with one flock comprising 19 birds), a Spangled Drongo in hillside planting P3 and a flyover of two Great Cormorants. Raptors again featured, with a Grey Goshawk seen below the powerlines and a White-bellied Sea-Eagle flying overhead was being mobbed by Masked Lapwings. Fairy and Tree Martins provided an identification challenge in the poor light (the former have a rufous crown and the latter a dark crown).

THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022– Page 9

The Eco-Corridor is now being used by education business Outdoor Spirit. Most children are 5 to 10 years old, but there are plans for an older group of 10- to 15-yearolds. The kids undertake bushcraft and re-connect with nature. They don’t go into the revegetation zones, but instead use the area by the waterhole past the water pump. As part of their environmental activities, they have already removed 3 trailer loads of rubbish from the river bank, which is a wonderful outcome. We will work with proprietor Guy Le Strange to determine how we can best use the Eco-Corridor to help educate the children about the environment.

PROJECTUPDATE The rotten wood on our much-loved Eco-Corridor sign has been kindly repaired by the Men’s Shed and the sign put back into place facing the carpark. We wholeheartedly thank the Men’s Shed for supporting our community project in this way.

Our monthly bushcare working bee on Sunday 14 August was basically a weeding blitz. Volunteers began weeding around the new plants on the riverbank planting P4 where there was a large variety of weeds emerging in the bare ground. Our priority was removing the Guinea Grass which can quickly overwhelm young trees (in good conditions, it can grow 0.5m in a month). After an hour, half the team moved to the hillside where there were many larger weeds threatening to run to seed. We didn’t get the chance to sweep through rainforest zones P1 and P2, so this will be a priority at our next working bee from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 11 September.

Volunteers Needed Like many groups, the average number of volunteers coming along each month hasn’t bounced back to pre-Covid levels and we need more volunteers to return or come forward, if we are going to achieve our goals. We encourage everyone to stay behind for afternoon tea and socialise. On 10 September, we will take part in the Samford State School Festival to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary. We will be putting on a joint display with the Samford Branch of Native Plants Queensland, so come along and say hi and find out more about our SDPPA community project. You can contact us via email (samfordecocorridor@gmail.com) or follow our Facebook or Instagram pages. Storer

LOOKING BACK Not 150 years ago, but a 1920 snapshot of the district can be gleaned from some real estate advertising. The 1920 advertising poster, promoting the “Samford Railway Estate” by Isles Love and Co, shows businesses established along Main Street including a bakery, hotel, the Gayford & Co office, blacksmith and co-op store. A search of Trove newspapers in 1920 shows Gayford & Co were auctioneers, Gayford and Shepherd. Gayford & Shepherd, Union Bank Chambers, Brisbane and Samford (opposite the station) had a number of fruit and dairy farms in that prosperous district between Samford and Dayboro listed for sale and advertised in the Daily Mail 13 July 1920 inviting readers to “Pay a visit to the Samford Office and we will show you around.”

The advertisement reads –A grand AGRICULTURAL FARM 1 mile from the station, 60 acres of which 50 are under plough, and 10 acre paddock watered by 2 creeks, up to date house with 3 verandahs, telephone, out buildings, oil engine, wagon and harness, splendid returns, proved by books. 50 pounds per acre.BANANA FARM, 4 miles from station, 50 acres, 8acres bearing, 8acres planted, 1 acre maize, 2acres potatoes, 4 acres under the plough, 2 cows and 2 good horses, house 4 room s and front veranda. 550 pounds cash, Rent one fifth of returns. DAIRY FARM-3 miles from station,350 acres, permanent creek through centre of property, half under grass, scrub land, about 9 acres cultivated, cattle, 2 horses, usual implements, house, and outbuildings, Terms. Thanks to Judith Hall who responded to our ‘Compare the Pair’ article by Peter Storer in the last edition. Judith emailed these lovely butterfly images taken at her home in Cedar Creek. “This type of vine has recently gone up a big, dead, old tree trunk (a widow maker as the old blokes say) and we’re likely to see the butterflies that like that vine again. We had dozens of them on a post near the house,” said Judith. From Peter Storer: The butterfly on the wall is a female Orchard Swallowtail, which is one of our largest local species. She lays her eggs on native citrus (Round Lime, Finger Lime) and other members of the Rutaceae family, including introduced citrus. The other butterfly is a Blue Tiger, which is very fond of the flowers of the Monkey Rope Vine (Parsonsia straminea) as shown. Its most common host plant is the Corky

CHECK IN ON A FRIEND

R U OK Day, Wednesday September 8, is a reminder that every day we should ask, “Are you OK?”, if we see a friend, acquaintance or even a stranger who seems confused, moody, unable to switch off, overly concerned about the future, worried they are a burden, concerned they are trapped, or is lonely or lacking selfesteem. We should ask if we see behavioural changes or find out about traumatic life experiences. Having listening ears can help tremendously.

The National Target Championships promise to be the largest target archery tournament held in Australia in recent times and Samford Valley Target Archers is thrilled to be hosting the event, from Thursday 29th September to Monday 3rd October 2022, at the club grounds on Mt Samson Road. Archers, including para-archers, will compete with recurve bows, compound bows and longbows. At the time of writing, 233 archers from Australia and overseas have registered for the events and many more are expected to register in the coming weeks. In fact, registrations have been so popular, an additional venue will be used for shooting the round of 144 arrows on Friday 30th September, at the Mount Petrie Bowmen club grounds at Belmont. At Target Archers in Samford, you will be able to watch two rounds of 90 arrows on Thursday 29th September, and two rounds of 72 arrows on Saturday 1st October. The 72 arrow rounds will form the qualifying rounds for the archers who then progress into the match play - an exciting element for the sport where archers or teams of archers go head-to-head in elimination matches. Team match play and Mixed Team match play will be held on Sunday 2nd October, and the individual matches and medal finals on Monday 3rd.

Samford Rangers Under 13 Girls (Division 3) completed a remarkable unbeaten season on Sunday with a victory against second placed UQFC. This great bunch of girls only formed as a team at the beginning of this year and immediately bonded under the guidance of super-coach Matt McGarry. The girls have played an entertaining brand of attacking football and have scored an amazing 93 goals in 14 games, and only conceded 9. Female participation at Rangers is on the rise, with around 50% more players this season than last. With the FIFA Womens World Cup being co-hosted in Australia next year, we expect this growth to continue and look forward to welcoming more female players to our club next season. The Dayboro Village Vet is now open, establishing a much-need accessible and advanced veterinary practice on Mount Mee Rd. Led by Ashley Young, Holly Goldring, and Rosie Overfield, the practice will provide routine healthcare consultations, advanced surgery, dentistry, medical care, second opinions, and comprehensive senior pet care.

Dr. Ashley Young grew up at the base of the Great Diving Range in a pioneer ‘timber town’ which is probably why he feels so at home in the region. A well-respected surgeon, he has the credentials, experience and skills to master complex orthopaedic and surgical cases, and is a sought-after coach to other veterinarians looking to improve their skills. Dr. Ashley is joined by his wife Dr. Holly who, like Ashley, has worked in Dayboro previously. Holly is a brilliant integrative medicine practitioner and has a special interest in geriatric medicine and supporting aging pets. Their partnership with Rosie Overfield, a well-known practice management and customer service specialist, will ensure Dayboro Village Vets provides a high-quality experience for the pets and people of Dayboro and its surrounds.

Dr. Slade Walker, owner of Old Mill Equine Service and the former Old Mill Veterinary Clinics, says, “I am incredibly grateful to see Holly, Ashley and Rosie head up a new team to reinstate Dayboro with the excellent veterinary care the community desperately needs and deserves. Dr. Holly and Dr. Ashley worked at Old Mill vets back in 2008. Together with Rosie, I couldn’t ask for a better leadership team to jolt life back into the clinic. Their surgical, medical and customer care is second to none. Out with the Old (Mill Animal Clinic) and in with the New (Dayboro Village Vets) while retaining the core values of a family-run business. The community will be delighted with the new team and services.”

PRODUCE ON SHOW Mini Farm produce was on display at the recent Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival. Such a thrill to have French-Australian chef, Manu Fiedel using our produce for his demonstrations over the weekend. The aim of the festival was to showcase the amazing local produce in the region, and with Alistair McLeod of Al’FreshCo as Ambassador, produce from Samford and surrounds was also on show. During Manu’s demonstration he used fennel, white salad market turnips, chard, kale, parsley, as well as our red salad market turnips, as shown in this picture. This was an amazing opportunity for our local charity to showcase what they do in the community to thousands of visitors to theMinifestival.Farm also had the opportunity to interview Manu, which will be up on our website soon. Head to www.mfp.org.auand if you sign up to our newsletter you go into the draw to win a free produce box to the value of $35.

It’s a shame that more people in the world don’t take the time to do jigsaw puzzles and learn the lessons that such activity has to offer. The world is made up of all different kinds of people: different sizes, shapes, colours, genders, political and religious persuasions, yet together they all make up the big picture. No one people are more or less valuable than another. Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) upholds these same principles and values. There are all kinds of men at SAMS. They come from different backgrounds, personal ideas and beliefs, yet all are welcomed, accepted and treated with respect, dignity and equality at SAMS. This becomes evident as soon as anyone steps inside the Shed: all the men welcome each other, and new visitors as well, like long lost brothers. If you didn’t have many mates before coming to SAMS, you’re guaranteed to have dozens once you step through that door. SAMS is the ideal place to meet old friends and make new ones as well. Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and see for yourself? Meet the men and make new friends at SAMS. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. New recruits for 107 ACU Samford completed their basic recruit course recently, resulting in another 20 young Samford teens joining the unit. The weekend started off wet and cold, but the weather cleared for a great day on the Sunday. As my old Commander used to say, “if it’s raining, we are training” so a little water didn’t stop the weekend. New recruits learn how to live in the bush, camouflage and concealment, and other basic field crafts. The senior NCO’s of the unit were there as well training the new recruits, doing a great job. Our Monday night training is gearing up for the Annual Field Exercise coming up next month, with a large contingent of our cadets going to this week long camp at Enoggera and Canungra. Samford’s 107 ACU parades from 6pm to 8:30pm every Monday excluding holidays. If you are interested in joining, please come along or contact the Officer Commanding by email: armycadets.gov.au/ArmyGeneral107ACU@armycadets.gov.au.informationabouttheAustralianCadetscanbefoundat:https://www.

COST OF LIVING REBATE Earlier this year, the Palaszczuk Government announced a $175 Cost of Living Rebate would be applied onto electricity bills to help ease cost of living pressures. The Cost of Living Rebate will start being applied to electricity bills from 31st August. The exact timing of the rebate varies depending on individual billing cycles. If a household has not received their Cost-of-Living Rebate by the end of November, they should contact their electricity retailer. We are able to do this because Queensland’s power assets are publicly owned, so Queenslanders are able to share in the dividends. DIVISION 11 REPORTCOUNCIL Do It again shine light a 2023 Australia Day Anyone can be nominated for an award with categories and eligibility criteria that ensure everyone’s contributions can be celebrated in any area of community life. The two categories are: Citizen of the Year Award and Mayor’s Community Spirit Award. This is your opportunity to make sure that people in our region are recognised and congratulated for all they do, whether they are involved in sports, arts and culture, the environment or the community. Visit mbrc. qld.gov.au/aus-day-awards. Nominations are open from 1 September until 28 October.

Road safety is a top priority, to make sure every Queenslander gets home and can enjoy our great Queensland lifestyle. Some safety works had been undertaken while this project has been under consideration. Skid resistance treatments and additional speed signs have been installed through the area to make the road a safer place for drivers while we work through the design process. We expect to have a new design for locals by early next year (2023), which will consider some of the great feedback we received throughout consultation. This project is just another example of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to delivering safer roads right around the state.

It goes to show how important it is for locals to get involved in community consultation, because no one knows what the roads need better than those who drive them daily. Thank you to every person who provided their feedback, and I trust that the revised design will be a better fit with community expectations.

you know a local hero?

The works planned between Lomandra Access Road and Camp Mountain Road intersection involved removing an overtaking lane, which locals overwhelmingly disagreed with. Based on this, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has set to work examining other design options to retain the lane while improving safety. 13,000 locals use this section of Samford Road daily. With so many people using this road, and the current crash data on the road, I know it is sorely in need of safety improvements. That’s why an additional $1.8 million in funding has been committed to progress a bigger, better design for an upgrade through this section.

The original edition reached Sir David Attenborough who sent Laura a handwritten letter praising her work: “Your lovely photographs are splendid reminders of how beautiful fungi can be.”

Passionate about environmental education, Laura has released the second edition of her book ‘A Glorious World of Fungi’, featuring more than 150 high-resolution photographs which she took across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America.

Laura holds a Bachelor of Environmental Management and Master of Environment, but her initial love of fungi started when she was five.

“I remember seeing all of these random ‘soccer balls’ popping up on the lawn from the kitchen window. Dad and I went to investigate to find they weren’t soccer balls at all, but were actually growing out of the soil,” she said. Laura is currently working on her next book, ‘A Glorious World of Insects’, exploring another vital component of our ecosystem.“Unfortunately, insect populations globally are declining, but there are many simple ways we can help insects in our own backyards, such as by turning off lights at night, planting a variety of natives and avoiding pesticides in garden sprays,” Laura said.“The natural world is just so full of amazing wonders, not to mention extreme beauty, and a lot of bizarre curiosities. From the constantlychanging landscapes to all the critters and creatures that we share planet Earth with.”

A Glorious World of Fungi is available by emailing: gloriousworldoffungi@gmail.com

“Fungi are such an important part of life on Earth and they provide enormous benefits to people, plants and animals. They play a vital role in keeping the environment, ecosystems and humans healthy,” Laura said. “The book is for a general audience, both adults and kids alike. It is packed with interesting facts and general information. My book is already in many homes (it makes a wonderful coffee table book) and is also being used in both schools and kindergartens across Australia and New Zealand.”

Many of us may absent-mindedly kick at the white caps that sprout from the lawn some mornings, but for Mt Glorious resident Laura Hewitt, these mushrooms are part of a whole other world of overlooked beauty.

Books are $36 each, with a $2 discount if you mention ‘The Village Pump’. Local pick up is available from Mt Glorious or books can be shipped Australia-wide.

Denise then demonstrated how to build a beautiful floral arrangement from scratch using Australian native specimens collected from her own and member gardens. This was fascinating to watch. Our next meeting on Tuesday 6 September in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford, 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, will feature former Queensland Nurseryman of the year and Branch member Russell Young, who will introduce us to ‘the best native plants for the home garden’. This will be a wide-ranging talk, including plants suitable for various situations, including sun, shade and different soil types, and will also cover any pruning or watering requirements. We consider Russell as our ‘walking encyclopaedia’ of everything to do with gardening, and his talks are always very informative and entertaining. Come along and discover some new native plants suitable for your property. We encourage attendees to bring along native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle while socialising. On 10 September, we will be taking part in the Samford State School Festival to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary. We will be putting on a joint display with the Samford Eco-Corridor team, so come along and say hi and bring your native plant questions. Later in September, Branch members will visit a local native garden in Mount Glorious. To find out more about our friendly group, check out the website (npq.org. au/samford/) and join our mailing list at samford@npq.org.au.

At our August meeting, Denise Turnbull explained how florists categorise flower arrangements into ‘traditional’, ‘tropical’ and ‘native’ and that, in this context, ‘natives’ can include South African proteas (this sometimes causes confusion about the ‘Australian native flower’ category at local shows).Denise said that foliage is very important to provide a framework for a floral arrangement. Widely used Australian foliage include Silver Dollar Gum, Foxtail Fern, Umbrella Fern, Woolly Bush and Gymea Lily. Feature flowers may include banksias, kangaroo paws or waratahs. ‘Highlighters’ (or fillers) include Geraldton Wax, Thryptomene or various nuts and berries.

A wonderful Happy 96th Birthday to our oldest member Pat Dixon who attends often. Thank you for being a wonderful CWAFabulousmember.guest speakers at our August meeting with sisters, Olive Gilby and Hazel Henders sharing their life in Samford with us, which included riding horses to school and much milking of cows, growing bananas and also raising their families locally. Hazels’ family are fifth generation Samford School and Olive’s just one generation less. Many thanks ladies for reminiscing with us. We also had the pleasure of hearing from our talented “baker extraordinaire” member and Treasurer, Marguerite, who told us of her early life living in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Many of us have arrived here from far away. Thank you Marguerite. We also welcomed new member Robyn and visitors Deidre, Roslyn and Matilda. Did you hear that Judith, Anne and Fiona did very well at the Ekka recently, entering their creations in Embroidery, Scrapbooking and Cookery respectively. First, Seconds and Thirds were plentiful. Well done ladies. Thank you to those local businesses and other services clubs for honouring our Centenary of QCWA and to Rotary for the beautiful flowers. It was a wonderful excuse to share a Scone-versation with the community – delicious! Fiona is looking for catering volunteers in September. The Sunshine Coast Social Club has been visiting our club for several years and the bowlers are now well known to each other. This annual event will hopefully continue for many years to come. Fashion Parade: A great day was had by over 116 ladies at the Fashion Parade held on Monday 22 August. The Samford Bowling ladies did themselves proud decorating the tables and catering for the Devonshire Tea. Several of the bowling ladies also modeled the clothes on the day, provided by Portofino. Some lucky ladies went home carrying the lucky door prize, donated by Portofino, and raffle prizes. Peter Dutton’s office donated a hamper and BWS Samford donated 3 bottles of wine for the raffles. Grateful thanks for these donations and the ones donated by club members. The Samford and Districts Chamber of Commerce offers business people from all walks of life the opportunity to meet and network, share knowledge and build strong business relationships. Our members work together to support each other, promote business growth, community development and regional prosperity.

While Limberlost, Robbie Arnott’s third novel, doesn’t utilise the magical realism of the first two, the beauty and simplicity of his writing continue to astound. He can conjure up a landscape, a mood and a fully formed character with the barest of sentences. This is a book about a quiet masculinity. About how to read the subtle displays of love, pride and fear felt by men too often dismissed as distant and unfeeling. It is impossible not to fall for Ned, the boy and the man.

Ned is too young to enlist alongside his brothers, who he longs to impress, and is left to work the family’s orchard with his father and older sister. He dreams of escaping his thoughts by sailing along the river in a small but beautiful dinghy. Losing himself in the flow of the water, the rustle of the trees, and the contours of the land. But he doesn’t own a boat. The simple goals he sets himself in this long summer are mirrored in the adult life the reader is given glimpses of along the way.

When the author of a much loved and admired book finally releases a new story, it is nearly always greeted with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Will it live up to expectations or hopefully, exceed them?

“You’re a funny fella. Nothing wrong with working towards a goal. One of the better things a man can do. Long as you earn what you’re after.” Ned’s father tells him after he has finally revealed his secret dream to buy a boat. Ned keeps a lot to himself, as does his father and sister and the author, Robbie Arnott, expertly illustrates the worries, the dreams and the love that can exist unspoken within a family and between friends.

A WINNER Another wonderful weekend of Samford Harvest feasting was enjoyed by hundreds of diners over four events on the last weekend in August. Held at the eclectic Loop Growers in Draper, Alastair and Ash McLeod and the team from Al’FreshCo were back in full swing presenting Samford Harvest. This is always a keenly soughtafter event, celebrating the local, seasonal produce of Samford and surrounds. This time attracting a wider audience as part of the Tastes of Moreton Bay Feastival, it was great to see so many in the community enjoy a superb and innovative five course feast, celebrating winter produce from a variety of producers including Blue Dog Farm, Loop Growers, Little White Goat Cheese and Lot 81 Micro Farm – and let’s not forget the opportunity to have a wee tipple from Laceys Hill Distillery. Alastair has done a fantastic job promoting the Feastival as the official Ambassador this year. It’s not too late to enjoy more events, including the 4521 Feast on 2nd September and the Mystery Farm Dinner with Tony Tierney at The Acres in Camp Mountain (not a mystery any more) on 9th September. This and more until 25th September. Event tickets: www.tastesofmoretonbay.com.au/ ticketsIfyou’re keen to attend the next Samford Harvest, don’t forget to register at www. samfordharvest.com.au.

Page 34 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 19 AUGUST 2022 DAYBORO AERIAL PHOTO – 2001 A lot of development has taken place in Dayboro in the past 21 years since this aerial photograph was taken. The two estates that had been developed before this time were the Rodeo Drive area near the Showgrounds where development commenced in 1984 and the Alcheringa Estate off Hay Road and to the right of Terrors Creek which was developed in the mid-1990s. The Showgrounds and football oval make a good landmark. The bowling green can be seen and if you look closely, you can make out the route of the railway between the bowling green and Terrors Creek. And isn’t it dry? There is very little green to be seen anywhere.
