Community Bank Samford has reached the incredible milestone of providing more than $1 million in grant and sponsorship funding back to the local community. This funding has supported a vast range of community groups and clubs, bringing new projects to life and fostering existing local activities. Nationally, since 1998, $320 million in profits from Community Bank partnerships has been reinvested in Australian communities.
Community Bank Samford is owned by Pine Rivers Community Finance (PRCF) and operates as a Bendigo Bank branch, offering the full range of Bendigo Bank products and services. This ‘profit-with-purpose’ model means that Community Bank Samford returns up to 100 per cent of profits back to the local community.
Grants encompass a spectrum of initiatives, from supporting programs that enhance veterans’ psychological well-being as they engage with animal shelters, to providing specialised equipment for the local Meals On Wheels division. The Bank has also garnered a reputation as a prominent patron for numerous local sports clubs, fervently advocating the development of our upcoming generations to achieve life goals.
Board of Directors Chairperson, Malcolm Frizzell said the bank is proud to fund projects that directly impact the everyday lives of local people.
“It’s a wonderful thing to be able to give back to the community in this way. By providing over $1 million in grant funding so far, we have ensured local groups who do so much for the community, have the funding they need to keep up the wonderful work they do,” he said.
“Everyone at the Bank is extremely proud of the fact that we contribute directly to the community that supports us in the first place. Everyone benefits, as our customers gain competitive rates and a full range of banking services, while the community receives enhanced resources and financial support.”
“Our vision is to build sustainability and resilience into our community where we serve.”
Community Bank Samford provides grants to charitable and not-for-profit organisations connected to the Samford, Pine Rivers and northern regions, furthering activities that
enhance the immediate community. The bank’s primary focus is to contribute towards projects supporting families, youth, health, education, the environment and the arts.
Community Bank Brendale was one of the first Community Bank branches founded in Australia, with 324 branches in operation today. In 2009, the Samford branch was established and in 2022 Brendale and Samford merged, consolidating operations at the Samford location.
“With heartfelt thanks to customers who have taken out a mortgage, saved with a term deposit or opened a bank account at Community Bank Samford; we couldn’t have reached this million-dollar achievement without you,” said Senior Branch Manager Mandy Bell.
To celebrate this milestone, the bank will launch a very special grant round later this year, seeking significant projects and programs in the Samford, Pine Rivers and Narangba regions. Projects from $50,000 commencing from July 2024 will be considered.
“These projects will be identified by PRCF Directors and staff, however, if you have a project that meets these criteria, email grants@ prcf.com.au and tell us about it,” said Mandy. “Multi year funding will be considered and our regular grant round will also open mid September this year.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
As a regular visitor to Samford Village to catch up with family, I am dismayed that Samford does not have a regular public bus link to and from the train station at Ferny Grove. Samford Village appears to me in lacking this essential means of transport.
When I visit my family, they drive to Ferny Grove to pick me up or take me to the station. Sometimes I have to get an Uber. Surely there are lots of commuters who would use the train on a regular basis and would appreciate a regular service throughout the day.
If this support was provided, it would save the locals of having to find a car park at the station. I have been advised that the car park often fills up.

PETER THE RE-STORER
Samford owes a great deal to New Guinea’s Birds of Paradise ... in a way, they brought the remarkable Peter Storer to our district. Having a post graduate degree in biology, he edited science journals in Oxford before moving to Papua New Guinea in the 1980s as Editor-in-Chief of the Education Department’s Curriculum Unit.
“The lure of seeing Birds of Paradise was irresistible and the level of crime in PNG was not reported in the UK.”
Peter’s liaisons with Australian publishers about printing PNG’s textbooks led to him joining the prestigious John Wiley & Sons in Brisbane, where he was Managing Editor for 16 years, before becoming a freelance science editor, then retiring in 2019.
In 1994 he moved to Samford district where he joined, and is now a Life Member of, the local branch of Native Plants Queensland, studying, cultivating and promoting Australian’s diverse flora. His revegetated property in Wights Mountain boasts over 600 native species and cultivars.
In 2011, the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association initiated Samford Futures: a community consultation program that spawned the Eco-Corridor, Creative Samford and Millen Farm, among others. The program showed that residents wanted to rehabilitate and revegetate along the South Pine River in the Parklands. Peter became Coordinator of the Eco-Corridor, initiating plantings, workshops, bird walks and educational experiences for primary, secondary and tertiary students.
“I find education to be the most rewarding aspect of the Eco-Corridor project, although watching the site develop would come a close second. I became involved because of my long-term association with Native Plants Queensland. As well as co-funding the initial grant with the Queensland Government, Moreton Bay Regional Council
immediately recognised the benefit of integrating the Eco-Corridor into its monthly bushcare program and has provided other valuable support. The project is still run by the SDPPA, which provides funding for contractor maintenance during the hot summer months when the Council program doesn’t operate.”
Peter’s first involvement in citizen science was the site monitoring of the Eco-Corridor, comprising regular bird, spider and butterfly surveys. Collaboration with QUT’s Samford Ecological Research Facility at Camp Mountain led to Peter and his team working with the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network to carry out quarterly surveys to help develop the bird module of their citizen science national fauna monitoring program.
Peter, a founding member of Creative Samford, writes about and photographs Samford’s wonderful plants and animals for the Village Pump. He also publishes articles in the Native Plants Queensland, Birds Queensland and Butterfly and Other Invertebrates Club newsletters and journals and is a member of the MBRC Biodiversity Stakeholder Reference Group.
When asked about protecting the local
environment, he said, “We need to stop clearing land (other than that essential for bushfire management). We need to understand that understorey vegetation provides critical habitat for a myriad of creatures that are the base for the whole food web. We need to identify and preserve areas with high-value re-growth. Wattles and she-oaks are often perceived as ‘rubbish vegetation’ yet are vital components of the environment. For example, the threatened Glossy Black Cockatoo relies entirely on just two species of she-oaks for food.”
Julie Martin
The SDPPA is grateful to Peter for his ongoing stewardship of the EcoCorridor, an important project of the SDPPA.

International Blind Sports Federation 2023 Games
Samford Valley Target Archers member, Janelle Colquhoun, was the only Australian blind archer attending the 2023 International Blind Sports Federation games, in Birmingham, UK from 18th to 27th August.
The Australian contingent consists of 100 blind or vision impaired (VI) athletes, but Janelle was the only Australian archer. In fact, it was the first time that archery has figured in the games with Janelle competing against ten other international archers.
Janelle and her spotter Paul Fruwirth took to the field in calm sunny conditions, reports Blind Sports Australia. The spotter’s role is an important one which is underpinned by certain restrictions. The spotter is responsible for checking and informing the VI archer of safety issues and can assist in the set up of the sighting aid, by adjusting it in any way when scoring arrows are not being shot. They may also assist the archer with the tactile sight when arrows are being collected, however, they must not adjust the tactile sight between the whistle to start the scoring end of arrows and the whistle to collect those arrows. Once the scoring arrows have begun, the spotter may only
pass on information required for safety, timing information and the fall of each arrow.
After the qualification round, Janelle ranked 11th in the VI division. She competed against Trish (ranked 6th) from Great Britain in the 1/8 elimination. An exciting round of matches followed, where they tied before Trish finally triumphed 6 sets to 4. (Blind Sports Australia)
Congratulations Janelle – another great achievement to add to your bow.

CYCLING TO RECOVERY
Conor Te Kloot was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2016. Although he is now in remission, it still has a big impact on his life and his family’s life. This year, he and his wife Liz will be competing in the Noosa Triathlon in November, to raise funds and awareness for Arthritis Qld.
Conor shares his story here.
‘2015: Before having kids, I was big into triathlons and was very fit. Similar to many people, when kids came along fitness took a back seat in my life. However, my heath declined for an unknown reason. Initially I had sore feet when I woke in the morning, but it gradually spread to my ankles, knees, hands, elbows and shoulders. I struggled to sleep at night and as a result, was very tired during the day. I lost a lot of weight. I specifically remember Christmas 2015 as being mentally and physically very tough, but unfortunately it was only the start of what was to come over the next 12-18 months.
Eventually I got a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and I was able to start the very long journey of medications, doctors, surgery and most importantly, a change in diet and lifestyle. All while being unable to work for 12 months and having our second child.
In October 2022, I was back at the start line of the Noosa triathlon, shedding a prerace tear with my wife who’s been there at every step. The tears were those of gratitude that I could be there. I knew the race ahead would be easy compared to what I’d faced and what we’d both been through. I was also very aware that not everyone living with arthritis is as fortunate as me.
1 in 7 Australians live with some form of arthritis. In some cases very mild, a slightly sore joint on a bad day, in other cases, completely debilitating and in constant pain. And this isn’t just “old people”. It doesn’t discriminate based on age or gender - kids get it too!
I’ve worked very hard and we’ve sacrificed a lot to get my health back but I know the journey is ongoing.
And so, this year Liz and I are both heading back to Noosa, the biggest Olympic distance triathlon in the world, raising money for Arthritis Qld, an organisation that has such a massive job to help so many people. Exercise and fitness has been key to rebuilding my broken body and broken mind, and I want people to know that with the right tools and support (Arthritis Qld), it can be done.

MT SAMSON WORKING ON THEIR PILLARS
Mt Samson State School has been very busy this year, working through a range of curriculum and activities to fulfill the school’s social ethos which is encapsulated in their Six Pillars of Character – Respect, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Responsibility and Caring. Here is just some of what they’ve been up to.
CHARACTER BUILDING
The school recently held their Year 3 –6 ‘Character Builders’ day with all classes from those years involved. Students worked in teams (mixture of all grades working together) to solve some trivia challenges and then participate in the Big Race (each team had to complete the physical challenge before moving to the next one). Points were awarded to each team for completing the fun challenges, listening and working with one another, persevering, showing initiative, problem solving altogether and communicating clearly.
The end of the day was celebrated with their ‘Big Ups’ where students encouraged each other and shared openly a positive personal comment to someone else in front of the whole group. This demonstrated courage, listening and open communication towards each other. Students’ comments summed up the day’s success.
“One of the Year 6’s was a natural leader in our group. She was the best!”
“It was a great way to make new relationships. I wish we had more time to keep doing it!”
“It showed me how to NOT be shy.”
BOOK WEEK 2023
This annual ‘Booktacular’ event involved many different celebrations of literacy.
The Scholastic Book Fair visited the school for a week and the school’s annual ‘Great Book Swap’ was hosted by the P&C, utilising donated and re-used books to read at home. The whole school participated in a “Where’s Wally” scavenger hunt and of course there was a dress up parade, as well as a special Meerkats performance for the P-2 and 3-6 classes on a shortlisted book of the year.

LOCAL NEWS
Over the years since 1986, members of the Samford Museum have raised funds in numerous ways. For years we held street stalls in Main Street on the footpath outside then Speedy Store and other group names the grocery store traded under, on election days and other occasions. Homemade cooking was the focus of items sold.
A lady who loved history, Marilyn Thomson, generously donated jams she had made with fruit from her own garden. Marilyn also supported the Museum on Australia Day by demonstrating her spinning wheel and items she had knitted with wool she had spun. Marilyn also played a behind the scenes role by recording our local history.
To have grown our collection on which members today continue to build, we must always remember the contributions made by generous supporters such as Marilyn. Sadly, Marilyn was recently farewelled but not to be forgotten by her family and friends.
Thank you, Marilyn. Rest in Peace.
Members find it gratifying our resources are sought by researchers of various aspects of Samford and surrounding districts’ history. From school children on excursions comparing olden days technology with
today’s, family history researchers, university students, current property owners wishing to learn more about their property’s former uses, organisations enquiring about the formation of the group, are just some of the enquiries we receive.
Often the answers are found in Samford Reminiscences, the collection of six books produced by The SDM Soc. Inc. These are collections of reminiscences written or told firsthand by the family or individual.
If you have a family story from the 1970s onwards (or earlier) to tell, please visit on Wednesdays or Sundays 10am - 4pm, or contact The Samford Museum by email info@samfordmuseum.com.au or phone 3289 2743. www.samfordmuseum.com.au You will be welcome.

THE BASICS OF BUILDING LITERACY
Did you know that owning books is associated with higher literacy and overall academic achievement? This is probably for multiple reasons, including parents who have the time, money and value systems to invest in literacy, but part of it is probably the child’s ability to return to the same stories repeatedly over an extended period of time. That picture book you read to them as a baby, will potentially be something they read to themselves once they are at school. Like language skills in general, literacy builds over time, but it comes back to stories.
I start at (or possibly before) birth, but it is never too late to start reading to or with your child. Even just telling stories and talking about your day helps to build literacy skills.
Repetition, word sounds, rhyming, all help connect the sound of the words to the words on the page, which leads to brain connections required to make sense of the words on the page.
School readers are usually pitched to be fairly easy, as they are about repetition and building fluency, so when buying books to stretch your child’s reading level, you might want to find something a bit more (but not too much more) difficult than your child’s school readers.
What to do if your child isn’t a reader?
First, check to see that there isn’t a physical or neurological block to their reading, like needing glasses, or dyslexia. Assistive technologies, audio books and image-based reading might be really helpful for a child who struggles.
Are they super active or very visual? Finding books that speak to a child’s personality can help to bridge the gap of literacy.
Remember that age guides are just that, guides. It is more important to pay attention to your child’s own reading level and better to stretch their skills than choose one that is too easy, but it will depend on the confidence level of your child (and if you have a younger child who will get the books next).
If you would like to find out more about choosing a great book for the little people

Welcome Hercules and Peppy
Two horses from the former McIntyre Centre at Pinjarra Hills now have a home at Samford RDA.
Hercules and Peppy are currently settling into their new lives at the Samford Showgrounds’ RDA centre before they are progressively integrated into the program.
The McIntyre Centre closed last month after almost 60 years of operation. Fortunately, Samford RDA was able to purchase two of the horses to add to their eight-strong herd. The newcomers will help make up the numbers after several Samford RDA horses retired from the program in recent months.
Hercules the Clydesdale and Peppy the Quarter Horse are experienced in working with adults and children with a wide range of disabilities. Horses with the right temperament and who are proven to be safe and reliable are difficult to find; and potential RDA horses are trialled for their suitability. However, Hercules and Peppy are ‘tried and true’ RDA horses, allowing them to be easily introduced to the program.
Samford RDA operates four days a week thanks to dedicated volunteers who care for the herd, maintain the centre’s covered arena and paddocks, and support riders in lessons. With the closure of the McIntyre Centre, Samford RDA is experiencing increasing demand for its services, especially for children – so volunteers are always welcome!
President Rebecca Clemmey said Hercules and Peppy were adjusting well to their new surroundings.
“Both horses are taking an interest in everything around them, including their new paddock mates,” she said. “They already have many admirers too, with participants keen to meet them and make them feel welcome.”
Donations towards the purchase of these two valuable animals, and costs associated with bringing them into the program, can be made via Samford RDA’s secure donation link: www.givenow.com.au/ samfordridingforthedisabled.
Hercules and Peppy will be available for sponsorship in the coming weeks, once they are integrated into the program. Annual sponsorships from businesses, community groups and individuals are greatly
appreciated as they help to meet the cost of the RDA horses’ feed, care and veterinary services, as well as offering various sponsor benefits. For sponsorship enquiries, contact sponsorship@samfordrda.com.au.

Celebrating live music and Queensland Fathers of Music
Happy Father’s Day! Who are some Fathers of Australian music? Here’s my purely personal local take. What’s yours?
• In classical it’s Brett Dean, Brisbane raised award-winning viola player and composer. Brett has appeared with the world’s top orchestras, including fifteen years at the celebrated Berlin Philharmonic.
• Kev Carmody, a Darling Downs raised stole generation member, gets my singer/songwriter nod. We’ll always remember the song From Little Things Big Things Grow, co-written with Paul Kelly, an Australian classic.
• In country it must be Caboolture raised lad Keith Urban. Four Grammys and six ARIA awards say it all!
• OK with rock we’re right back in our own valley. Guitarist Ian Haug was a founding member of Powderfinger, one of Australia’s most loved rock bands. They toured widely, were active in philanthropy and won a
staggering 18 ARIA awards. Ian also leads his own band The Predators, tours widely with cult outfit The Church and runs Camp Mountain’s respected Airlock Studios.
All these fine Queenslanders are also proud fathers – Dad’s enjoy your day!
COMING SOON
Coming up at Samford Live in September we return to our social evening shows. On Saturday 23 September we present The Gypsy Cats, a fast-moving intoxicating blend of European jazz, swing and gypsy bossas. From busking in Brisbane streets in 2016 The Gypsy Cats have become one
of Queensland’s finest gypsy jazz bands. With an eclectic repertoire of originals and standards: uptempo swing, jazz ballads and French waltzes, the Gypsy Cats energetic sets will have you spell-bound. They are also loved by the swing dancing community, who enjoy performing their skillful moves to the quartet’s fast paced tunes. Get those dancing shoes on!
And be ready for a blast in October when The Seven of Ska hit the stage. We’re not the least bit parochial, but this talented group really are a local success story! was engaged by the railways. He had a T. Ford car in 1915 and he was engaged by the Paymaster and John Wilson, the Engineer of the Railway. My father used to take the timekeeper, the pay clerk and two constables on pay days (to the work sites). They were paid in cash from half a sugar bag of sovereigns and half a sugar bag of half sovereigns and another bag of various silver coins.”
Harry believed some of the first galvanized roofing iron used in ‘Vale (Samsonvale) was at Krieschs in 1888. It and the first barbed wire came from Germany. In Harry’s childhood he witnessed the introduction of dairy cattle breeds from Scotland and the Channel Isles and cream separators from Sweden and Belgium.

Nearly 200 people gathered to pay their last respects to a remarkable local identity when he was laid to rest beside his wife Emily in Samsonvale Cemetery, November 1989.

Wilheim Harry Kriesch (Harry) was born at Mt Samson in 1898.
“Around 1909, Dr CF Marks, in his motor car, brought the Premier and the Minister for Education out to the Provisional School. Our lady teacher drove a horse and sulky.” Harry and his mates used to feed her Shetland pony and take it to the gully for water. “There was no tank at the school so we carried our own water.” In 1985 Harry told the Sunday Mail: “By the time I went to the districts one teacher school just after the turn of the century, there were 48 childrenmostly of German parentage - being taught there.”
At the age of 10 he rode to Strathpine where he caught a train to the RNA Exhibition with a sovereign ($2) to spend.
“In my boyhood days the nearest railway stations were at Enoggera and Strathpine. Building the line to Samford was taking place during the First World War. There were 45 nationalities working on the line and the reason I know all this is my father
“My courtship began at a Christmas Eve house party at Mrs Armstrong’s bush humpy. I married Emily Woodward in 1919 on her birthday.” Harry and Emily raised their family of five sons and one daughter at Mt Samson.
Harry spent his life farming in the area growing maize, sorghum, lucerne and other crops, dairying and pigs. Keeping crows and cockatoos off the crops was a daylight to dark job for a person and a dog. He’d leave home at 4am with his horse and wagon loaded with potatoes, corn and pumpkins, travelling Samsonvale Road, via Strathpine, arriving at Roma Street at 10am.
Harry reminisced about the Americans camped at Strathpine who bivouacked at the top of Mt Kobble and Mt Samson. Krieches gave their hospitality and Emily’s sponge cakes were favourites.
The North Pine Dam/Lake Samsonvale created big change in the district and to the Kriesch family and their lands. Over 100 acres went under water. Harry pulled the old house down before the waters came and used the good timber to build another house in 1977. He loved to stand on his front porch and see, quite clearly, Moreton Island, the Glasshouse Mts and the TV towers.
In his notebook of memoires written in 1981 he wrote: “I have a good memory and am proud of “Ask Harry.”
The Senior Committee of The Hills and Districts Chamber of Commerce would like to invite you, your friends and family to our first Information / Education session on: DATE: 7th September 2023
VENUE: Hills District Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills
TIME: 9.45am for a 10.00am start – until noon.
We have seen a need for seniors and people thinking about retirement to be better educated about all future challenges to give them the confidence to tackle life ahead in this third age. Often it is the small things that we need to know that will keep our lives as uncomplicated as possible.
Anne from Services Australia will present the first session. She will be outlining the role of their Financial Information Service. Following on from this, there will be a presentation on the topic of My Aged Care, all three levels will be discussed: Commonwealth Support, In Home Care and Residential Care. A general overview of how the fees and charges are calculated will be provided. There will also be plenty of time for questions as we’re sure there will be many. A small morning tea will also be provided for attendees.
Please contact: Carolyn 0448 328 914, John 0448 186 115, or Dianne 0410 516 628 if you are able to attend.

Samford Community Kindergarten is a community owned Kindy that is managed by a Volunteer Parent Committee. Parents of attending children nominate for different roles and work closely with staff to support the running of the Kindy each year. This year we have worked together to achieve many positive things for our Kindy.
Fundraising has been a group effort with a few different parents organising fundraisers throughout the year. These have included a Hot Cross Buns Easter Fundraiser, Containers for Change Recycling Drive, Honey Pot Fundraiser, Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser, Picture Plate Keepsake Fundraiser and both a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Stall. Funds this year have gone towards purchasing new learning and teaching resources. Our much loved Home Corner will be getting a refresh in the coming weeks!
We were very lucky to receive a Junior Landcare from Woolworths and Landcare Australia. The funds received were used to establish two Frog friendly habitats in our outdoor play area.
We have acquired donations from local members of parliament to split our Native Bee Hive into two hives and to establish a designated area for a Yarning Circle.
Our social media pages are up and running! Please follow along to see what we are up to at Samford Kindy. The Village Pump has included several articles from us this year. The children particularly enjoy seeing themselves in the local newspaper!
Working Bees are integral to the maintenance and improvement of our indoor and outdoor spaces. Time spent gardening, cleaning, tidying, fixing and other odd jobs are what these mornings are all about.
The social calendar this year has included an Easter Egg Hunt, a Family Picnic at Kumbartcho Sanctuary, a Play Date at Flip Out, a Mother’s Day Dinner at Little Tree
our breakfast
and many an important Coffee Catch Up after Kindy drop off.
A word from this year’s President, Clarissa Rudolph
“When I first nominated for the role of President, I wasn’t entirely sure what I signed up for. Eight months in and I can honestly say it has been an amazingly rewarding experience. Being on the Committee enables you to be actively involved in your child’s Kindy experience. Your opinion is appreciated and valued, you help organise fun social events for the children and parents and help make decisions about how to improve the facilities, program and environment.”
“This year we have many wonderful parents on board who go above and beyond to support, promote, maintain and raise funds for our Kindy. We are very lucky to have this treasured Kindergarten within our community. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, we welcome any donations or support from local businesses within the Samford community. Please reach out if you’d like to be involved by emailing president@samfordkindergarten.com.au.”

Tick Season is Here: What to do if you find a paralysis tick on your pet.
Queensland is the perfect environment and climate for paralysis tick breeding. Paralysis ticks are small, eight-legged, egg-shaped ‘arachnids’. Despite their small size, just a small amount of their toxin can be fatal to domestic animals. If not fatal, the injected toxin can remain active in your pet’s system for 1-2 weeks after it has been removed. For some pets, the effects of a tick bite can be seen for months.
Preventative products are always a pet owner’s best line of defence and there are some excellent options available on the market. Pet owners should follow the product instructions carefully to ensure there are no gaps in protection. Additionally, daily checking of pets, particularly during the peak months of August – December, is vital.
How will I know if my pet has been bitten by a paralysis tick?
The early stages of tick paralysis may present in your pet as:
• More lethargic, listless, or quieter than normal.
• Disinterest in food or ‘picking’ at food.
• Occasional vomiting or retching.
• Dilated pupils.
It is recommended that you check your pet for ticks immediately and reach out to your veterinarian for immediate advice. Sometimes the symptoms progress quickly causing rapid deterioration. Don’t wait to seek advice. More pronounced symptoms can occur as the paralysing toxin advances to muscles in the body. This may look and sound like:
• Changes in your pet’s ‘voice’. Their bark may sound softer or at a pitch that sounds odd to you.
• Changes to breathing style and rate.
Your pet may have difficulty breathing, faster breathing or have noisy breathing such as grunting or coughing.
• Inability to blink. Paralysis ticks commonly attach to areas around the face and neck. As the toxin takes hold, eyelids can become paralysed. This can lead to excessive dryness which can result in eye damage.
• Lots of drooling. Sadly, paralysis can create difficulties in swallowing which leads to a build up of saliva in the mouth.
• Difficulty standing and walking. You may notice your pet is wobbly, especially in the back legs.
• Complete paralysis. Once the toxin takes hold, your pet may be unable to stand, walk or jump. What should I do if I notice one or more of these symptoms?
Take your pet to your vet immediately. Paralysis tick toxin is aggressive, and symptoms can appear ferociously and fast. Research shows that the earlier the treatment, the more likely it is that your pet may recover.
It is important to:
• Take the tick with you (if removed). The size of the tick will help determine how long it has been feeding on your pet.
• NOT give food or water to your pet. If
they are struggling to swallow, giving food and water may lead to aspiration pneumonia (the food and water goes into the lungs instead of the stomach) causing additional issues for your pet.
• Keep your pet cool and quiet as you travel to the vet.
Depending on the severity of the paralysis, your pet may spend multiple days in hospital receiving intensive care. This will include administering tick anti-venom serum to neutralise the toxin and sedation. Your pet may also require oxygen therapy and fluid therapy if symptoms are severe and prolonged. Your pet will be monitored closely, and the nursing team will conduct multiple tick searches each day. This is because many pets have more than one tick attached at the time of their vet visit, but they may be too small to have been found by the pet owner.
Whilst there have been significant advances in the treatment of tick paralysis, every pet will respond differently to tick toxin. Many pets need to stay in hospital for more than 5 days which can be hugely stressful for pet parents and families. At this time of year, we urge you to ensure their tick prevention routines are up to date and you are using a high-quality product.
For more information about tick prevention, identification, and advice, contact Dayboro Village Vets on 07 3171 2227.

Rare Talents of Samford
One of the exceptional things about folk music and dance, is the opportunity it presents to perform in remarkable places. Recently, we were invited to lead a Scottish dance (ceilidh) at Parliament House. Rosie, our youngest dance teacher, and Roland, lead musician of Phillip’s Dog, were guest artists with Ishka Celtic Rock to present an evening filled with lively jigs, vigorous reels and spirited strathspeys. It’s fantastic to have such talented young people in our community, continuing a dynamic tradition of music and dance.
Are you interested in folk?
Roland and Rosie are active participants at our regular Community Folk Dances. We dance regularly in Samford and Arana Hills, and our dances are part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy & Active. Our vision is to connect people through folk dancing and sustain a vibrant community where everyone is welcome.
We feature Anglo/Celtic/Bush dances with an historical twist - light-hearted, lively social dances with awesome acoustic music by Phillip’s Dog and friends. All dances are taught and called, with an emphasis on fun and participation, rather than fancy footwork. No partner, costume or experience required. We encourage folk musicians to join us too – send us a message and we will send the music. Join us for tea/ coffee, cake after the dance.

Green Street not as you knew it!
Those who have been around Samford for a dozen or so years will know that the Green Street online service www.greenstreet.net. au has been involved in plenty of activities helping homeowners and business people to ‘have a go at being sustainable.’
Not everyone knows that Green Street is a Samford homegrown service that has supported businesses and communities in many locations across the State. It has also been presented at conferences in Korea, Hong Kong, UK and Germany, as well as at events in other Australian states.
More importantly, what we are most proud of is facilitating local projects such as Changing our Bag Habits, Climate Smart Business Clusters, helping with communities affected by the 2012 floods, resilience during Covid 19 and setting up the Samford Sustainable Business Network. We’re very happy too, to be part of the Sustainable Samford Working Group of the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association.
Though the old site had thousands of members, we thought that with changing needs in a more climate conscious world we would totally revamp www.greenstreet. net.au to upgrade help given to people, so they can live more sustainably at work, at home and in the community.
It provides a way to calculate your impact on climate change and find guidance on how to reduce this impact.
Green Street also connects people and organisations who are having a go at being sustainable.
Households and micro businesses can sign up for free and all businesses can pay a small fee to access some unique services to help to ‘have a go at being sustainable.’
After signing up you can calculate a Green Street Score, achieve some badges and be listed on a business profile and community list. Businesses may access the Sustainability Roadmap, quizzes, purchasing surveys, planning guidelines and more. We’ve tried to make it as user friendly and connected as possible, so please have a look at Green Street as you will now know it on www. greenstreet.net.au
Let us know what you think and how else we can add value!

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB Rejuvenation
Chair yoga, crafting, conversation, escaping into books and the act of giving are great ways to feel rejuvenated. After two energizing sessions of chair yoga with Ruth Campbell, our little group are much rejuvenated. On every third Friday of each month, Ruth will be running chair yoga sessions for anyone who wants to join in. Those of us who attended are overjoyed. The sessions will start at 3ish with Cuppa and Chat from 2pm. A donation of $2 is requested to cover hall costs. The next session is on Friday 15th September, at 3ish. Everyone is welcome. Each week sees a different Friday afternoon program, and don’t forget the free SDPPA Book Swap. Everyone is welcome.
Again, the incredible ladies of the Lions Creative Charity Crafters delivered small mountains of much needed clothes, rugs, beanies and peanut pillows for
premmie bubs. Crafting Kindness added rugs, ponchos, shawls and scarves. The beanies and scarves are packed away for next year. These gifts were for the Mental Health and Maternity Units at Caboolture Hospital, Caboolture Community Care, and the Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre, all of whom do amazing work to help the vulnerable, the ill and the homeless.
Plans are underway to assist with Christmas on Main, thanks to Judy, Lucy and Wendy. Also for Christmas, we are seeking good quality early childhood picture books to be included in gift bags for little ones in need. These can be dropped off to the SCHUB on a Friday afternoon. The Lions CCC ladies and Crafting Kindness have already made beautiful stuffed toys for our gift bags. Little miracles are created by working together.

ORGANIC GARDEN COACHING
Our business, My Food Garden, has operated a one-on-one coaching service for food growers over the last 12 years. I wanted to share some insights from this experience, as I have worked with 200 clients over that time, with coaching on properties ranging from balconies, backyards, acreage, hobby farms, commercial urban farms and school community gardens.
The clients are around Australia, with Samford and Brisbane area clients faceto-face and further away using video over Facebook Messenger. The largest proportion of new clients were at the stage of seeking to recommence food gardening, after stopping due to lack of success or change of life circumstances.
Key insights
Location of garden – This requires core conditions for success such as sunlight, drainage, ease of access and lack of tree roots. No space is the same and there will always be some compromises needed. Being objective in this process is helpful, as well as weaving in beauty and biodiversity.
Soil – This is the foundation of plant vitality and establishing a consistent rhythm of activity to activate and balance soil life is essential - and yet many gardeners tend to be re-active rather than pro-active with this critical issue.
Staging of project – Blending level of experience, time available, space to grow food and resources needed all become part of a staging decision in the project. Starting small to build skill levels creates a platform to expand. Time needed reduces in relation to output with skill improvement.
Plant and care selection – Planting out of season is a common issue for food gardeners. This issue makes it very difficult to achieve success. Appropriately enlivening plants to get through their sensitive early stages is also very helpful as well as planting stock and appropriate watering.
Pest and disease management – This is the most common reason for food gardeners to stop and yet the answer to this challenge is not garden coverings and toxic sprays, it is in building the vitality of your plants, so they do not become a target for insects and animals as well as diseases.
Well being – Recognising the healing
aspect of the garden is a very common reason for gardeners to start and keep going.
A successful food garden is never about one thing, it is a combination of factors and the points above create a platform for plant vitality. I use organic methods and make these more potent for life processes in soil and plants with biodynamic methods.
Our coaching service guides food gardeners through the key insights above. It can be one session, multiple sessions and a package that runs over a year. We also run educational workshops in biodynamic gardening and these are often attended by our coaching clients. More information on coaching at our web site www.myfoodgarden.com.au.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
Be on the Lookout
Living in rural areas is a great way of life, but it also comes with issues that can be on a much larger scale than more suburban communities. It is Fireweed season again, and Council’s invasive weeds team are out treating Fireweed with herbicide while they are in bloom and easier to detect. Fireweed is a restricted weed, an annual or bi-annual herb that can be anywhere from 10-60cm tall. The flowers are small, yellow, daisylike, about 1-2cm in diameter with up to
15 petals. This flower then turns into a puffy head that is very easily spread in the wind. If you are on a smaller block of land and come across these weeds, they can be removed by hand and disposed of with your general waste.
If you have a larger area of land, Fireweed must be sprayed with herbicide as part of the property owners General Biosecurity Obligation. If you would like assistance with creating a Fireweed management plan, contact Council’s biosecurity officers on 3205 0555 which is also the number to report sightings of Fireweed on Council land.
Are you prepared?
I am sure you will agree that the days seem to be getting warmer already and with the onset of an El Nino, there is no better time to start getting prepared for storm season, and for what is being highlighted as a possibly bad season for bushfires. There are a few things you can do now to ensure you are prepared, such as having a clean up around your property, clean out your gutters, have an emergency plan for your family, make sure any visitors who might be staying with you are aware of the plan as well, and don’t forget about pets and livestock.
There is loads of information available regarding bushfires at www.qfes.qld.gov.au.
Most importantly, please sign up to Council’s Moreton Alert so you are up to date with severe weather warnings, bushfire warnings, planned burn notifications or potential flooding within our region. Go to Council’s website www.mbrc.qld.gov.au or scan the QR code to sign up for Moreton Alert.

Nev first became interested in orchids around the early 1970s when he was given a King Orchid ( Dendrobium speciosum ) which turned out to be from Mt Mee. About a year later he joined the now defunct ‘Native Orchid Society of Queensland’, gaining life membership in 1989. In 1974 he joined ‘The Orchid Species Society’, the first species society in the world, and has been heavily involved ever since. Visitors are welcome and attendees are encouraged to bring along labelled native plant specimens for our ‘show and tell’ segment. This month we will be featuring native ferns. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash).
Our August meeting featured top nurseryman Russell Young who gave us some great ideas for the best native plants to use as screens, hedges and windbreaks. Hedges are a formal feature for a sunny position and should be pruned regularly to a ‘tent-shaped’ structure, which maximises the light for growth and guides water to the drip zone. A mixture of small-foliage species, such as lillypillies or westringias works best. Pruning can be carried out with sharp cutters, a pruning saw or loppers, depending on the size of the branches. Screens are wider spaced and require less maintenance. A good windbreak has multiple rows of well-spaced plants of various heights that filter the wind to avoid turbulence, rather than blocking it. Windbreaks can create a useful corridor for the movement of wildlife.

Bushcare
On Sunday 13 August, we had a fabulous turn out (the best since before Covid) for our monthly bushcare working bee. One team of volunteers watered the young plants at the top of the river bank using watering cans filled from Council’s new water trailer, while another group swept through revegetation zone P1 to clear Madeira Vine and Cat’s Claw and the worst infestations of Creeping Inch Weed. We even found a new weed on site: ‘Arsenic Weed’ Senna septemtrionalis, identified by our new MBRC Bushcare Officer, Daniel. Afterwards, our volunteers enjoyed a convivial afternoon tea at the picnic site, kindly provided by the SDPPA. We thank everyone who came along and contributed. What a great effort!
Our next bushcare working bee will be held on Sunday 10 September from 2pm
Arsenic Weed Bird survey
On 22 August, our birdwatchers recorded an impressive 65 species during our monthly survey. Highlights included seeing a Pacific Emerald Dove flying low over hillside revegetation zone P3, a White-faced Heron over the South Pine River, and wonderful close views of two Shining Bronze-Cuckoos in a eucalypt at the top of the hill. We saw all three local species of fairywrens (Superb, Red-backed and Variegated), with the males now in colourful breeding plumage. We were alerted to a raptor by raucous alarm calls and saw a soaring Brown Goshawk being mobbed by Blue-faced Honeyeaters and magpies. The grand finale P1 on the return leg was finding a very cryptic Russet-tailed Thrush foraging in the leaf litter of zone P1 (this species is usually found in upland rainforest). The full details of the survey can be found on eBird.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club
Samford Golden Valley Pony Club hosted its annual Tetrathlon event last weekend. The weather was perfect, and all competitors had a great day. As well as being a club event, it was also the QLD Hub event for the 2023 Tetrathlon Nationals. We had the Australian Pentathlon Champion and Olympic hopeful Rhys Lanskey there on the weekend, which was great for our young SGVPC riders to see him in action.
Pony Club Nationals are held every two years in different States. This year they’re in Western Australia so some disciplines are holding hub events for riders to attend with their own horses. They all compete over the same course layout, they’re built to the same plan in each state. The QLD riders will fly over to Perth later this year to compete in the other Tetrathlon phases - Running, Swimming and Laser Shooting. As well as competing individually, the competitors can also enter team classes and compete with a friend or family member.
OUT & ABOUT
Samford Pony Club would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers and the Tetrathlon sub-committee representatives for their help running this event.
Thank you to our generous event sponsor Queensland Off the Track, and also Petstock Keperra for sponsoring the Highest Points prizes. Best of luck to the Qld riders going to Perth!

Dayboro against Samford Rangers has become the traditional starting fixture of the Chronicle Cup. This dependable game was set against a backdrop of new arrangements. A sincere thank you to Andrew Green for pulling the season’s fixtures together.
Getting results.
Another key figure in making this season possible, Bert Binkhorst, oversaw the toss and Dayboro captain Ben Winn elected to bat. Julian Heap’s bowling is fearsome. It reached a new level on the weekend, coupled with his newly-grown beard. A sign that his days in the armed forces are nearing an end. He quickly struck and had Rangers’ spirits high.
The Dayboro team had a few new faces. Chronicle Cup debutants with Warehouse cricket experience featured prominently in the batting lineup. Kevin Crawley looked assured at the crease and found boundaries frequently on the leg-side, notching an unbeaten 52. Jackson Jennings, a star to watch for sure, cut an assured figure with bat in hand. 13 years old but playing shots older players have no hope of ever playing. He was unlucky to get out.
Brendan McDonald struck up a healthy partnership with Crawley and pushed the total close to 100. Some disciplined bowling from Jeremy Trost, Nick Kirk, Ryan Willemse, Malcolm Bannerman and Mick Draper kept the scoring contained.
Good fielding allowed Rangers to take their catches, including a sharp run-out to dismiss the dangerous Charlie Geddes. Just when it looked like a partnership could form, it got snuffed out. Martin Willemse took an early contender for catch of the year when he took the sharpest of reaction catches to dismiss Ben Winn. In the end Dayboro were all out for 127.
Tim Vandermeer took the new ball for Dayboro. With the orange Keith Dudgeon in hand, he was a threat, swinging it in the air and asking questions. He removed one of the openers and challenged the more capable batsmen.
Andrew Middleton has probably faced more balls this winter than any other player in the comp. He played strongly in front of the wicket, hitting the new fencing hard. Jackson got Julian caught behind with a beauty. Cooper Lush batted calmly, now a stalwart of Chronicle at 15 years of age, before falling to Cassimaty’s bowling. Martin Willemse showed he’s also classy with the bat in hand, working with Rangers’ talisman Mick Draper to get the required runs.
Earlier this year, my Dad expressed worry that Chronicle may not keep going without him around. At the time I told him it was bound to carry on. People want to have a good game of competitive social cricket and Chronicle continues to satisfy that demand. At the end of play on Sunday, Mum told me she had been speaking with some of the new Dayboro players that had played Warehouse. They said they’d never experienced any cricket game like this before. A game played in good spirit, competition between bat and ball, old friends catching up. A perfect start to the season.

The First Five Years Lasts a Lifetime
If you’re a new parent who’s forgotten how the wheels on the bus help its forward propulsion, or what the nutritional choices are of five little speckled frogs, Baby Rhyme Time sessions at your local library have you covered. For toddlers and young children, libraries also offer Storytime and Playtime activities, helping both kids and parents socialise, while also providing a learning opportunity for the littlies.
Offered as part of the State Government’s First 5 Forever program, these free sessions aim to give kids early literacy skills, and provide parents with tools to practice these skills at home. One little piggy at a time.
First 5 Forever cites research showing that over one million new connections form in children’s brains every second during their first few years of life, with 90 per cent of brain development occurring within the first five years. This period is critical to building strong and healthy neurological pathways.
Sharing stories, singing, talking and playing with children from birth, helps build a foundation for their future development and encourages a lifelong love of learning.
Local mum Christina Gilbey appreciates the active nature of Rhyme Time sessions at her local library.
“I really enjoy learning new songs and the actions that go with them. They’re very easy to follow along to and I can do them with my bub at home. It’s also great getting up with all the other mums and bubs, dancing along to a few songs at the end,” she said.
Mum to two children under five, Monika Kulig, experiences a range of benefits in taking her youngest to Rhyme Time sessions.
“It is always such a positive experience. Everyone has been friendly and welcoming and it’s so stimulating for the babies,” she said. “Interacting with other local mums and bubs is also a huge plus. My bub is always ready for a nap afterwards!”
Closest to Samford, the Arana Hills library runs regular Rhyme Time, Storytime and Playtime sessions throughout the week. There is also a dedicated children’s reading area and toys available to borrow.
If you can’t make it to a library, there are plenty of opportunities to foster early connection and education with the newest member of your family. Babies and young children learn best by listening and interacting with the important adults in their lives during everyday activities. This
can include talking about what you see on the way to the playground, singing during bathtime, or reciting your grocery list as you push a trolley with them down aisle 3.
For a refresher on the tenacity of the incy wincy spider as it waits for better meteorological conditions, 2023 local session times are below.

BOOK REVIEW IN THE CLEARING
J.P. Pomare’s ‘In The Clearing’ is a fictional retelling inspired by factual events referred to in the acknowledgements at the end of the book. I first learned of the cult known as The Family when I watched a documentary of the same name. My interest piqued when I came across a new Australian series on Disney+ called ‘The Clearing’ and was compelled to start watching. So, when I started reading Pomare’s novel I had high expectations, and of course, immediately made comparisons to the screen adaptation.
My first impressions of the novel is that it has far more powerful and sinister undertones than the screen version. The pacing, rising tension and suspense all combine to make this an intriguing read and genuine page-turner. The story is told through inter-weaving timelines, from the point of view of Amy as a child and from pages of her journal, and through the eyes of Freya, the woman Amy would become.
What struck me initially is that Freya is
portrayed in the novel as being mentally stronger, more independent and calculating than she is depicted in the screen version, although equally battling the demons of her past. The flashbacks, journal entries and present day narration dovetail seamlessly, with details implanted by the author to ensure the story makes sense as it culminates to its dramatic conclusion.
The story telling, character development and setting are masterfully done, but it is the depth, complexity and evolution of Amy / Freya’s character that sets this story apart from others. The spider’s web of deception, brainwashing and narcissism by the cult leader and her followers who espouse the key value of ‘protect the queen’, play into the manipulation and cruelty towards innocent children who are forced to endure and commit unspeakable acts.
Ultimately the reader is left to contemplate key questions - Who is responsible? Who is pulling the strings? Is there one mastermind or is this a conspiracy to ensure the survival of the cult by a new generation of devotees?
Now, as far as comparing the novel to the screen adaption, well the novel wins hands down. It goes far deeper and unravels the story in logical steps, with the narration driven by Amy and Freya. The Disney+ version bounces around with annoying and confusing flashbacks, and tells the story from the points of view of many characters, some who don’t even exist in the novel.
In fact, the screenplay deviates from the novel to such an extent there are times you have to wonder if the producers were cutting corners or significantly changing key aspects of the plot and characters in order to make their own point of difference. In my view, the deviations from the novel were to the detriment of the screen version.
My advice is to read the novel first and then make your own mind up when you watch the screen version. Even the meaning behind the term ‘The Clearing’ is significantly different between the novel and the screenplay and you will quickly notice other significant differences such as character personalities, descriptions, gender and names, as well as deleted scenes or implanted backstory scenes.
I read ‘In The Clearing’ in two days. I was hooked, and simply had to keep reading to find out what happened in the end, to unravel the mystery of one child’s murder, and the disappearance of another. I highly recommend it for fans of Australian crime and drama fiction. Five stars from me.

"Leigh had to work really hard for us to secure the sale of our property in a specified timeframe. She stayed very close, provided awesome communication throughout and remained calm and professional whilst supportive and helpful! We really appreciated Leigh's no-nonsense approach, honesty and sense of humour too! Having been a purchaser and a vendor with Leigh now we highly recommend her for both.
