“If Governor Mickelson could see what has transpired in our state because of the South Dakota Community Foundation during the last 30 years, he would be overjoyed, and he would be confirmed in his belief that the people in our state could come together and do great things.” -LINDA MICKELSON GRAHAM

Since November 11, 1987, we have been working with communities, schools, nonprofit organizations and individual donors ever since to preserve South Dakota values and provide for the future. Celebrating the big 3-0 gave us an opportunity to reflect on all that you have helped us accomplish. As the year unfolded, we connected with our past, highlighting stories, events and people that were instrumental in making the Foundation South Dakota’s premier philanthropic organization. If you haven’t done so already, we encourage you to check out these stories at www.30southdakotastories.org. The South Dakota Community Foundation was established 30 years ago to connect people who care with causes that are important to them, and we are proud to report that your generosity reached record levels in 2017. We received nearly $54 million in contributions— including the single largest gift in our history--and awarded over $14 million in grants to communities and nonprofit causes across South Dakota. The year was also marked by strong investment returns of nearly 15%. What a great way to celebrate our 30th! Nearly two-thirds of the dollars we received in 2017 were a result of planned gifts—both current gifts and estate bequests. We are uniquely equipped to accept a variety of gifts including real property, IRA rollover gifts, life insurance policies, in addition to stocks, mutual funds and of course cash. In addition to helping you accomplish your charitable goals, careful planning can offer current tax benefits and even provide current income opportunities. Strong markets performance and tax reform present some interesting opportunities as well and we are anxious to work with you to maximize your giving. Thank you for allowing us to work with you to improve the lives of South Dakotans across our state. So much good has been spread across South Dakota over the past three decades. The good news? Because of you, we’re just getting started.

OUR HISTORY The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) was created as a public, nonprofit corporation on November 11, 1987, as part of the late Governor George S. Mickelson’s vision for South Dakota’s second century. To establish the SDCF, the McKnight Foundation and 3M Corporation issued a $5 million challenge grant to the state of South Dakota. The grant memorialized the life of South Dakota native William L. McKnight, a former CEO of the 3M Corporation and founder of the McKnight Foundation. The state of South Dakota committed $2 million, and within twelve months, SDCF leadership raised the additional $3 million from private donors to fulfill the challenge grant. Today, the SDCF, a public nonprofit organization, holds approximately $333 million in total assets and manages 850 funds. The earnings from those funds support charitable needs and causes throughout the state. With the continued generosity of South Dakotans and solid investment returns, the SDCF will continue to serve individuals, families and communities across the state for generations to come.

Planned Giving

What is planned giving? How can it benefit you?

Planned giving is a way for you to make a gift to your favorite charitable causes. The right planned gift can provide you and your loved ones with tax and income benefits. There are many reasons why a planned gift might make sense for you this year.

Are you looking for a way to avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your home or investments? Are you thinking about how to build your income for retirement? Would you like to create an inheritance for your children and also help charity? Do you need a tax-efficient way to sell your business this year? Would you like to receive a stream of fixed payments for life and even some tax-free income? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a planned gift can help you achieve your goals. To learn more about the benefits of planned giving, please contact us or visit our website.

Investing in South Dakota’s Future

THE SOUTH DAKOTA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S OBJECTIVE The aim of the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) is to make giving back simple and effective by providing trustworthy guidance and investment management to South Dakotans who want to benefit communities and charitable organizations. How the giving process works: When you establish a fund at the SDCF, the principal of your charitable donation is invested. Each year, a percentage of your fund’s value is made available for distribution through grants to charitable causes. As investment returns accumulate, the fund can continue to impact South Dakotans forever. We put the power of endowment to work for good.

Where your donations can go: We work with you, your family and/or your financial advisor to make giving to causes you care about a seamless process. We offer a variety of fund types to meet your charitable goals. For example, you can designate specific charitable organizations, set up a scholarship for local students, support your local community savings account or make a broad impact on culture, economic development, education, health and human services. Who we serve in addition to donors:

What you can give: You can donate a variety of assets to benefit others. We accept: Cash Gifts

Cash, Check or Credit Card

Non-Cash Gifts

Planned Gifts

Bequests, Life Insurance, Charitable Trusts and Gift Annuities

Nonprofit Organizations: In 2017, nonprofits received nearly $1 million from the SDCF through the South Dakota Fund, Community Innovation, and Nonprofit Savings Accounts grant programs. In addition, $13 million was distributed to nonprofits through funds the SDCF manages for donors. The SDCF also offers agency endowment funds to help nonprofits create long-term funding sources. Communities: The SDCF has a fund type specifically for communities called Community Savings Accounts (CSA). A CSA will help support basic needs and enhance the quality of life within a community through grant awards to local organizations for years to come. Today, there are 77 CSAs across the state. Advisors: We partner with professional advisors to help clients accomplish their charitable goals through estate planning.

A Legacy for Webster-Phyllis Hanse ESTATE PLANNING: An Impact Beyond Your Years

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster and was a large part of their music program. In June 2017, the Day County community announced they had received a $4.2 million estate gift from the former piano teacher. The dollars are endowed with the South Dakota Community Foundation and Phyllis’ passions are reflected in her wishes for the endowments.

Ms. Phyllis Hanse’s generosity will give back to the Day County community for years to come through her careful estate planning.

Her estate established four funds for the Day County area. One will be utilized to support

“It’s an amazing gift,” said Sannes. “It’s going to be a game-changer in the community for decades to come.” Through SDCF, Ms. Hanse was able to provide a longterm funding source to the community, charities and nonprofits she cared about most. Her love for the Webster community will live on through these endowment funds and she will be remembered forever.

Phyllis Hanse was a beloved member of Webster, South Dakota and taught piano lessons there for many years. She passed away in 2016, leaving a legacy of generosity for the Webster community that will last for generations to come. “She was a kind and loving woman who lived a modest and meaningful life,” said Tom Sannes, former piano student of Phyllis and Chairman of the Day County Community Foundation. “She made a big difference for our community’s youth and understood the value of frugality.” Phyllis was an only child herself with no children of her own but was a favorite among Webster School students. She would frequently attend local youth sports and events and was passionate about supporting youth education and other programs. She also was an active and engaged member of the local

the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster. In line with Phyllis’s passion to support youth education, the second and third funds will provide scholarships for youth in the area based on criteria that she established. The fourth and final fund was established for the City of Webster to support the public library and youth programs in the area at the recommendation of the Day County Community Foundation.

Mansour Karim is a man intent on giving back Having immigrated to the United States from Iran in 1950 with just $27 in his pocket, this year Karim celebrates his 90th birthday—and more than $2.5 million in philanthropic gifts to his adopted country. “Mansour is truly an example of the spirit of generosity—of what it means to be a South Dakotan,” said Stephanie Judson, president of the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). “He has embodied what our mission is at the Community Foundation and we are confident we’ll be watching the effects of his generosity on the people of this state for decades to come.” Karim first partnered with SDCF in 2014, making a $25,000 gift

to establish an endowment fund for the Boys and Girls Club of the Capitol Area in honor of his parents, Jafar and Zahra Karim. Later that year, he announced his goal to build a $1 million endowed fund to for the Club by offering matching gifts of $100,000 a year for five years. The summer of 2018 will culminate in the celebration of his 90th birthday and his fifth and final pledge to the Boys and Girls Club. “The milestone will be a celebration not only of Mansour’s life, but the legacy he has forged in this state,” Judson said. “His life history is a testament to the characteristics he and his family have demonstrated their entire lives— kindness and generosity.”

Karim grew up in poverty in Tehran, Iran, with two loving parents, whom he credits with a happy upbringing. Mansour faced many challenges alongside his family’s economic outlook. At age 10, he was stricken with a skin infection on his head and missed a year of school battling the disease. Despite many hardships, his parents focused on helping Karim secure an education in the United States. In 1950, he made the long journey to South Dakota with very little English, but very big dreams. He secured a job in the seed lab at South Dakota State University (SDSU) and worked his way through college, studying at Huron College. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in engineering

at SDSU in 1956 and his master’s degree in 1961. Mansour went to work for the Department of Transportation as the leader of their Hydraulics Section, a position he held until he retired in 1991. Soon, he met the love of his life, Ruth, in Pierre while working for the Department of Transportation. He has been giving back since, Judson said, both in financial investments and in acts of service. Recently, Karim also established funds for the Cultural Heritage Center museum in honor of his children and scholarship funds in both his name and his late wife Ruth’s name.

“His life history is a testament to the characteristics he and his family have demonstrated their entire lives—kindness and generosity.”

Pierre Post 8 of the American Legion honored Karim as the 2016-2017 “American Legion Good Samaritan of the Year.” In 2016, he was awarded the George S. Mickelson Award by the South Dakota Teenage Republicans. “Mansour’s humble beginnings have played a role in his perspective and the way he treats others,” Judson said. “He knows the sacrifices his parents made for him and he is focused on not only honoring them but doing so in a way that sets an example for future generations.”

Mansour is pictured with his two sons, Jafar and Monni Karim. Mansour recently established funds for the Cultural Heritage Center museum in honor of his children.

Pictured with his family, Mansour’s legacy of kindness and generosity will continue for generations to come. “He is truly an example of the spirit of generosity—of what it means to be a South Dakotan,” said Stephanie Judson, president of the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). GRANT RECIPIENT SPOTLIGHT

Red Cloud: The Place Where Dreams Come True Building a Better Community for Everyone Nestled in between rolling hills and pine trees, the campus at Red Cloud Indian School is pristine. It is a private, Jesuit K-12 school serving nearly 600 children who attend daily. The school lays claim to a 94% graduation rate, which is way above the national average. Students learn about their language, culture and spirituality and are prepared to strive for fulfilling careers in the future. Celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, the school was founded at the request of Chief Red Cloud himself. The school’s location is in the city of Pine Ridge. Pine Ridge is in Oglala Lakota county situated in southwestern South Dakota and is the second poorest county in the United States. While its

students and their success remain the primary focus for Red Cloud, the school wants to give back to the community and area that has long been their home. AN ECONOMIC ENGINE….

The Heritage Center began in 1968 as an art show. It was founded to demonstrate the talent and skills of local Native American artists and to afford them an entrance into the art world. The purchasing of award winning artwork each year from the art show and the receipt of donations from local families and private collectors necessitated the need for an actual space to exhibit these works. The Heritage Center opened its doors in 1982 and merged with the Red Cloud Indian School in 1997 becoming a department within the overall institution.

It soon became clear that the Center was more than just a museum or art gallery. With unemployment rates of up to 80 percent, the Lakota community faces many challenging economic and social conditions. The Center’s gift shop and on-line store have empowered local artists by increasing their economic self-sufficiency and making their work available to a global community. THE HÓWAŠTE (“TO HAVE A GOOD/ BEAUTIFUL VOICE”) PROJECT….

In 2018, The Heritage Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a year-long celebration. Three exhibits will occur throughout the year including the Hówašte project. This project supports local artists, develops educational programming and culminates in an exhibit

“Our strong partnership with the South Dakota Community Foundation is allowing Red Cloud to create truly transformative change here on the Pine Ridge Reservation,” said Fr. George Winzenburg, Red Cloud’s president. “ Through the Foundation’s support, we are creating new opportunities for local Lakota artists— and driving needed economic development on Pine Ridge. And in our schools, we are revitalizing the Lakota language, and ensuring this endangered language survives for future generations. This work simply wouldn’t be possible without the South Dakota Community Foundation—and we are so deeply grateful.” Students visit The Heritage Center exhibits

that will elevate artforms that are historically and culturally connected to the Oglala Lakota people. SUPPORTING COLLABORATION….

Red Cloud Indian School wants to do what it can to support collaboration across the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to build tourism and provide a vehicle for economic growth. Plans are underway to conduct asset mapping and sponsor input sessions in each of the nine districts of the reservation as well as network with regional tourism leaders. They will continue to promote the region at both the state and national levels.

PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT….

The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded Red Cloud Indian School two grants in 2017. A $20,000 South Dakota Fund Grant was awarded to support the Hówašte project. A $10,000 Community Innovation Grant, offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, will help foster their efforts to network and build partnerships to promote regional tourism and increase the area’s economic base. “The South Dakota Community Foundation is proud to partner with the Red Cloud Indian School and support their work to expand the market and income for potential artists along with

promoting tourism in their area.” Says Ginger Niemann, SDCF program officer. “They are doing valuable work with implications for replication in other areas of our state.”

The South Dakota Fund is an unrestricted fund that makes grants in support of culture, economic development, education, health and human services. To find out more about this grant, visit https:// sdcommunityfoundation.org/fornonprofits/sd-fund-grants/ One of the South Dakota Community Foundation’s goals is to help communities that have identified a need reach a solution that is effective, equitable and sustainable. Nonprofit Savings Account Grants SUPPORT FOR NONPROFITS NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE The SDCF is committed to strengthening nonprofits in our state. We recognize the value of committed staff and volunteers and understand the importance of consistent funding to support their work. We look forward to partnering with interested nonprofits and their supporters to build endowment funds that will support their mission now and in the years to come. Nonprofits apply to the program, and if awarded, the organization receives a $20,000 challenge grant from the SDCF after successfully fundraising $80,000 in endowed funds from donors. The total of $100,000 is added to a designated fund at the SDCF and provides perpetual funding to further each organization’s mission. One of the benefits of this program is that it removes administrative burdens from nonprofits. Community Savings Accounts A L AS T I N G C O M M U N I T Y I M PAC T

The SDCF has partnered with 77 communities across South Dakota to form Community Savings Accounts (CSA). A CSA provides current, past and future residents with the opportunity to give back to the town they call home. With SDCF’s careful investment, a community’s CSA will continue to grow and support annual awards and grants in perpetuity ensuring the town continues to thrive for years to come. CSAs are under the control of a local board of directors. The board directs fundraising efforts and distribution of available funds. Under this local control, the money raised in your community, stays in your community.

Greater Lyman Foundation C o m i n g To g e t h e r f o r t h e C o m m o n G o o d

The Greater Lyman Foundation (GLF) was established in 2006 as a community savings account (CSA) to provide financial support to charitable causes in the Lyman community at the recommendation of a local board. The Lyman community consists of the entirety of Lyman County, SD and its five communities along Interstate 90. Herb Sundall, Kennebec, SD attorney and chairman of the GLF, was there from the beginning. “We sent out letters explaining GLF - who we are and our purpose,” commented Sundall. “We also made one on one contacts with community residents, included articles in the local newspaper and attended public events like tailgates at football games.”

GLF Board Member Jim Fulwider presents grant check to members of Iona Community Club.

With many communities to benefit from the CSA, the GLF board had a challenge ahead of them to bring an entire county together. In 1969, the county was involved in an extremely contentious school reorganization fight. “Not only were these communities mad at each other, it even divided families,” said Sundall. “Those wounds, to some extent, still existed when we formed GLF. We heard comments from potential donors asking if the GLF was going to spend money in that “other” town?” The GLF worked together to overcome the divisions. “We had Directors representing the entire area, people who were respected in their town or their area,” said Sundall. “We showed each community that we had greater goals than just our individual towns and were careful to spread our grants around.” The GLF also brings the communities together with their annual spring event. “The banquet type dinner provides a short GLF informational program followed by entertainment,” said Sundall. “We have between 125 to 225 attend and usually raise a few thousand dollars but that is not the primary purpose of the event.” GLF wants the event to provide entertainment for their donors, prospective donors, and to keep the community informed regarding GLF’s progress and grants given.

At their May 2013 event, the GLF accepted a generous challenge to raise $50,000 in two years for $25,000 from Gary and Connie Grittner of Pierre, SD. They were successful in reaching the challenge in May 2015.

baseball and softball, libraries, senior meals, thrift stores, fire departments and more.

The CSA works to include the younger generation in their decision making. “We have high school age representatives on our board”, noted Sundall. “It brings a perspective to the board that older members do not have. It also brings technology expertise that we didn’t have before, and a level of energy we may not otherwise have.”

“We went several years with our largest single donation being $10,000. Instead, we received $1,000 or $2,000, but we received a lot more $20 or $100,” said Sundall. “Not having a large starting donation, in my opinion, may have turned out to be a blessing because our community members all got the feeling that they were a part of our growth. I honestly believe that it being OUR Foundation, has helped us grow faster than we might have if we had received a large donation starter. And without a doubt it will help us grow in the future.”

To date, the GLF has awarded grants totaling over $80,237. Their grants have grown since inception and are starting to make a large impact in their area. Small non-profit entities utilize their funds for projects that improve the quality of life in the greater Lyman area. Over the years, GLF has contributed to the local legion, cemeteries, museums, community centers, youth

Some CSAs have been established with a larger estate gift. This was not the case for GLF.

Mr. Sundall and the GLF Board have great plans for their CSA. “My hope is we will not only increase the quality of life impact in our area, but we may be able to move into the area

of community development as well,” commented Sundall. “GLF has had a very positive impact on our area. It has brought our communities together for common purposes which benefit our entire area. Hopefully its impact will only increase.” GLF lives by the motto, “Don’t give until it hurts, rather give until it feels good.” “People have bought into “our” foundation and consequently we grow. Only one’s imagination limits what GLF’s impact may be in the future,” says Sundall. Currently, the GLF is working to raise $80,000 for $20,000 from the SDCF by May 2018. Their hope is to exceed $500,000 in their fund. To learn more about the GLF or starting a community savings account in your area, please visit https://sdcommunityfoundation.org/ for-communities/
