After the Dakota Uprising of 1862, 303 Dakota men were sentenced to death. President Lincoln commuted 264 of their sentences. On December 26, 1862 in Mankato, MN, 38 Dakota men were hanged until dead in the largest single day mass execution in American history. In April 1863, the remaining men, women and children were moved by boat to Nebraska and South Dakota. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children ride (MMIW) was created six years ago to raise awareness and commemorate those who were disappeared during that transition. Riders also bring their own names of loved ones who have been affected by violence since then, those who have been lost and left without a voice. Their names are not forgotten. In June, 2019, the riders extended their ride by 60 miles, originating from the Santee Reservation in Niobrara, Nebraska, to Fort Thompson and on to the state capitol in Pierre to honor the victims. The Missing and Murdered is a locally produced film, broadcast by SDPB, that tells the history and follows the journey of the riders of today. Travel with SDPB to Fort Pierre and around South Dakota on an allnew episode of Dakota Life, Thursday, May 6, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1 and SDPB.org Fort Pierre was built on Oceti Sakowin, Cheyenne, and Mnicoujou traditional lands along the Missouri River. Known as the oldest continuously occupied white settlement in South Dakota, Fort Pierre is home to natural and historic sites: the mouth of the Bad River, the Wakpa Sica Reconciliation Center, the Verendrye Monument establishing France’s purported claim to the Louisiana Purchase, rodeo grounds and the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Museum, and the Fort Pierre Chouteau National Landmark, one of the largest Great Plains trading posts in the 1830s.

Banasiak says the award is a group effort, as his art department colleagues work together to create an environment for learning and he continues to learn from his students.

BRINGING BUFFALO BACK: REDCO’S WOLAKOTA BUFFALO RANGE Buffalo are returning in greater numbers to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate. A project of the Rosebud Economic Development Corporation (REDCO), Wolakota, meaning “to live the Lakota way of life,” is building a bison herd on 28,000 acres of Rosebud Sioux Tribal lands. The multiyear build-up phase includes plans that convert the former working ranch known as Mustang Meadows from cattle to a 1,500-strong bison herd, as well as a workshop and gathering space. Wolakota is also 4

exploring a processing plant, cultural and ecotourism and educational outreach. The regenerative buffalo range is taking shape on land that was formerly under nonIndian ownership and control and is within the boundaries of the tribal nation. The plan is to build Wolakota into the largest Native-owned and managed buffalo range in the world. REDCO is partnering with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund and the U.S. Department of the Interior, working to ensure the herd is grown sustainably and tended in a culturally appropriate manner, including a diverse range of animals such as older females and bulls who regulate and govern the herd. Buffalo from Badlands National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and Montana’s American Prairie Reserve have been relocated to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate. Wizipan Little Elk (Sicangu Lakota), REDCO Chief Executive Officer, explains the origins and mission of Wolakota. “The relationship between Lakota and buffalo is one that is inextricable. Buffalo cannot be separated from Lakota and Lakota cannot be separated from buffalo. We’re one and the same people. We consider buffalo to be our ancestors. When the buffalo were taken from us, it was a massive blow. When the genocide was committed against the Lakota and against other indigenous peoples, there was also a genocide committed against buffalo – a very specific and concerted effort to wipe out buffalo from the land. With colonial expansion, they knew that if they were able to eliminate buffalo from the land that it would then be easier to take our land and to move us onto the reservations. The buffalo were everything to us. They were our food. They provided our clothing, our shelter, our ceremonial items. They were our teachers on how to organize ourselves and our society – on how to treat one another with kindness and compassion, on how to protect children, on how to honor our elders. This is an opportunity to not dwell on the past, but to acknowledge it and move forward with new vision and with new light into a

future that is healthy for our people, for our region, and for the planet. The greatest opportunity that we’re going to have with the Wolakota project is the ability to form meaningful relationships with buffalo and to bring them back – not necessarily into our daily lives, but perhaps into a part of our monthly or annual lives. We will have an opportunity to see them, to interact with them, and to form that relationship. There are opportunities to heal our land. Buffalo are a keystone species. When you introduce buffalo back into the prairie ecosystem, the original prairie ecosystem starts to rebuild itself. You see increased biodiversity. We’re going to see increased carbon capture. There are also going to be economic opportunities as well in terms of jobs that are created. This is an opportunity for us to do what we call the development and implementation of local solutions to global challenges. And this is going to be an example not only for other native nations but really for the rest of the world to look at, and say, ‘Hey, these guys are doing something pretty cool out in the middle of what we now call South Dakota. We can do that in our area as well.’ We have to be economically sustainable. Wolakota puts us on the map in a way that we’ve not been before and allows us to engage with the rest of the world in a different kind of way. It’s important to understand that that no nation can be sovereign if it can’t feed itself. This is just one component of a much larger plan and vision for the Sicangu Oyate to be able to feed itself and to not only be able to provide for our own, but for our relatives in the region. This is particularly important in the time of globalization and particularly poignant during the time of COVID where global food and supply chains have been upended. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has a constitutional provision that says that we are supposed to consider the implications of our decisions on the next seven generations. Instead of having that simply be an aspirational statement, let’s actualize that and actually make a 175-year plan of prosperity, so that informs our approach and our work. This herd doesn’t belong to any one individual, one nation, or even one generation. Dr. Jill Kruse This month, Dr. Jill Kruse, a family medicine practitioner with Avera Medical Group in Brookings and a member of the Prairie Doc® team, hosts a live discussion with Dr. Clarissa Barnes on the particular ways COVID has impacted women. Katy Beem: I’ve been working from home and remote-schooling our third grader for over a year. The role conflict can be very demanding. How are you seeing mothers in distress in South Dakota and what has it revealed about the realities of working women who are also caretakers? What can we learn from this? Dr. Jill Kruse: “It’s definitely been an eye-opener. My husband is an ER nurse. I’m a physician. We’re both essential workers, but someone needs to be with our third- and fourth-graders. We had to do some very creative scheduling with coworkers. Last April, nearly half of mothers living with school-aged children weren’t working. That’s really concerning,

especially if your job and your health insurance are tied to each other. So, I’ve been seeing a lot more stress and anxiety. And mothers tend to traditionally take a more active role in childcare and remote learning. Lots of guys have really stepped up and come a long way, but a good majority of that falls on moms – which can lead to emotional stress and isolation.” KB: What kind of societal shift can we make, as individuals and organizations, to address what the pandemic has revealed? JK: “The biggest thing is not being isolated. Getting rid of the stigma of asking for help. And with medicine, we’re doing more virtual visits, where I’m talking to patients in their own homes on their devices. During COVID, we had to take care of more people all at once that were sicker than we’re used to taking care of and so we’re using technology to monitor people from their homes safely and not having to transfer

patients to larger hospitals that were at-capacity. Not everyone can drive to Sioux Falls to get care, so we have to consider how to keep people connected in our geographically spread area of South Dakota.” KB: Many moms I know don’t necessarily reach out for care unless it’s a physical sickness, thinking anxiety and stress don’t qualify. Even though we should know better. JK: “It’s so important to find your people, to form a group of women who can support, empower, and lift each other up and feel safe to admit that you’re not perfect and you don’t have this all figured out. Facebook and the internet have helped us find each other and say ‘I see your journey and I will rally, celebrate, cry and be there for you. I’m walking the same road.’ It’s important to have another person normalize that you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed.” KB: What are other issues women are experiencing from the pandemic’s impact? JK: “This topic could be 20 different shows. For example, the changes in pregnancy and delivery with COVID, where we’re limiting people in the delivery room and visitors. Or, pregnancy is right up there with diabetes and heart disease for risk of severe COVID complications, so women are wondering if it’s safe to conceive during this (continued on p. 31)

Images of the Past Old Guitars and the Local Musicians Who Love Them SDPB goes behind the scenes of the collection at the National Music Museum in Vermillion to spotlight historic instruments and local musicians who love playing them. Gibson Explorer — The Explorer model was one of a set of modernistic-looking electric guitars developed by Gibson in 19571958. This Explorer formerly belonged to John Entwistle, bass player of The Who and a long-time guitar and bass collector. He traded the instrument to his fellow-collector, guitarist, and bandmate Robert Johnson, who performed with him in his band Ox in 1975. Martin D-28 — The Martin D-28, introduced in 1931, is an icon of American guitar-making. The D-28 is modeled after the wide, deep-bodied, style 111 guitars that Martin produced for Ditson in 1916 and called dreadnoughts after the heaviest class of British battleship during WWI. This large body, combined with steel strings, gave the D-28 a powerful sound that suited the emerging country music style, which needed a guitar that could stand up to a band and amplified voices. In 1941, when NMM 10738 was built, it was Martin’s middle-grade dreadnought, with fancier inlay than the D-18, but not including the extensive abalone decoration of the D-45, first built at the request of the cowboy star, Gene Autry. A story of immigration, assimilation and prejudice, The Donut King follows the journey of Cambodian refugee Ted Ngoy, who escaped the brutal Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Ngoy arrived in California in the 1970s and through a mixture of diligence and luck, built a multi-million dollar donut empire up and down the West Coast. Over the next decade, Ngoy sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming Cambodian refugees and offered them steady employment in his donut shops. The Ito Sisters: An American Story is set against the backdrop of the antiJapanese movement in California, a 60-year campaign by politicians, journalists, landowners, labor leaders and others that culminated in the evacuation and incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast during World War II.

The definitive story of the civil rights era from the point of view of the ordinary men and women on Eyes on the Prize. Their extraordinary actions launched a movement that changed the fabric of American life, and embodied a struggle whose reverberations continue to be felt today. Narrated by political leader and civil rights activist Julian Bond.

Shedding new light on a geopolitical hot spot, KOREA: The Never-Ending War is written and produced by John Maggio and narrated by KoreanAmerican actor John Cho, the film confronts the “Forgotten War” perception of the Korean War. In reality, the conflict was an important turning point in world history that still reverberates to this day. The documentary encompasses the present and past of the war, from today’s leaders and events to historic personalities and moments of the past. Seth Tupper Named Supervising Senior Producer Seth Tupper is transitioning from his job as an SDPB News reporter to the newly created position of Supervising Senior Producer. In his new role, Tupper oversees the newscast team, as well as In the Moment on radio and South Dakota Focus on television. “In my oversight of our growing newscast team, I will focus on planning and organization to ensure that our radio newscast slots are filled and news is flowing to our websites,” says Tupper. “Our hope is to get the newscast process operating as smoothly and automatically as possible with help from multiple sources within the organization, so that our beat reporters can focus less on filling the newscasts and more on indepth, feature and investigative reporting.” Tupper’s work with the public affairs shows will focus on upholding the new goals and standards developed as part of the recent revamp of In the Moment. “I’ll also continue working with South Dakota Focus host Jackie Hendry on a new identity for that show, which has already been under transition since she took the helm earlier this year.” “Lastly, I hope to continue some of the reporting that I’ve so enjoyed doing for SDPB,” says Tupper. He says SDPB audience may see an even greater flow of content from the journalism team and even more integration among SDPB’s various platforms, all with the goal of keeping South Dakotans informed and engaged. 18

Jen and Ty Moos are originally from Helena, Montana. They relocated to South Dakota in 2006 for Ty’s job as a fisheries biologist for SD Games, Fish & Parks. Jen is a social worker who works primarily with the elderly. She has also been active with volunteering for a local hospice, Webster Public Library’s children’s programming, the Day County Arts Center, and helped initiate Webster’s city recycling program. The Moos household recently cut the cord.

“We only have our antenna, which gets four PBS stations, and we find that quite fulfilling. Whether we want to watch the news, something cultural for music, or celebrate a holiday, watch something family-oriented that provides good information, we just turn on SDPB.” For their five-year-old daughter, Jen says she is especially appreciative that public broadcasting is commercial-free. “When my husband and I were growing up, we saw so many commercials that can affect your self-image: feeling like you had to fit in, you had to drink or be the pretty girl or not eat your meal. Those aren’t messages we want in our home for Aly. I feel like PBS has not just cartoons but kidfriendly, positive, affirming messages, like, ‘You are wonderful the way you are,’ and ‘What do you like about yourself?’ and ‘Let’s talk about racial equality.’ Just so many positive things!”

Jen says the programming is very meaningful to their family.

“We’re not paying anything for the antenna, but it’s worth enough to me that I want to make a monthly donation to make sure we’ve got it in our home and that we’re supporting it. We’re very proud to partner with South Dakota Public Broadcasting.”

Watching Nature on SDPB is a Moos family tradition. “Almost every Wednesday night, we all gather our evening treat, sit on the couch and watch with awe at the Nature program offered on PBS. Known as the Tulsa Race Massacre, a mob of white residents set fire to “Black Wall Street”—hundreds of Black-owned businesses and homes in the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma—killing an estimated 100-300 Black residents and leaving an estimated 10,000 Black residents homeless. All of our rituals of how we bring life into this world have changed and not necessarily in a good way.” KB: The ripple effect is astonishing. JK: “When the pandemic started, we stopped doing mammograms and pap smears. Now what happens to the women who missed an early breast cancer or early pap smear change? Now that we’ve started exams again, I’ve got an entire year of patients who are behind. Getting them caught up with

mammograms, colonoscopies, pap smears, it affects that work. A CDC study shows pap smears dropped 85% with California’s first stay at-home order. When that order was lifted, 25% of the exams were below normal. On the program, we’ll also talk about staying at-home and that caregiver stress. The typical caregiver for older adults is a woman in her 40s and 50s – the sandwich generation, where you’re caring for your kids, your grandkids, and your parents. That’s hard. And most frontline caregivers are women – women hold 78% of all hospital jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Women hold 70% of

pharmacy jobs and 51% of grocery store jobs. The UN Women’s World Health Organization showed violence against women increased by 25-30% during lockdown. All of these issues, I’d love to touch on in the program, which is more than one episode can carry, but because it’s a call-in show, our audience will tell us what is important to them and where we can take this conversation.
