th E ro DE o f AMI ly

Summer has arrived, and with the season change comes our own changes. You may have noticed a slightly lighter magazine. The page count of our magazine has reduced, but the content within remains extensive! While this might seem like a significant change, we continue to work hard to bring you local content, great stories, listings, and more!

Our feature continues to be on pages 3 & 4, and this month we will showcase a family from Wall, SD, with a talent for the rodeo. You can find our listings on pages 14-19; local content is spread throughout. Please visit our website for additional resources you may want to see, including signing up for our Passport Newsletter for the latest streaming options.

Additionally, the annual sustainer challenge has begun. You’ve already said yes to helping SDPB deliver news, programming, science, and the arts to people throughout our state, making a huge impact. Now you can take your membership to the next level by simply switching to an automatic monthly contribution. When you become our newest SDPB Sustainer, Tom and Kathy Dean will add $100 to your donation. Your ongoing monthly support allows us to plan for more trusted news coverage and exceptional programming.

Lastly, we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed producing it for you. Continue to check the letter every month for exciting news and announcements.

Bright lights, voices over speakers, the hustle and bustle of livestock and people, the smell of popcorn, and belt buckles galore – some things you might experience on a summer night at the rodeo. For people in the Midwest, the rodeo is a summer staple. We gather with the rest of our community over numerous nights to support our local cowboys and cowgirls. We experience the hard work and dedication they put into their sport – and for a family from Wall, SD, they've committed even more.

The Blasius family captures the heart of South Dakota through their community involvement. Parents Brett and Paula and their children Lane, Josie, Blair, Burk, and Jace all participate in the rodeo, which started with their dad when he was younger.

"He [Brett] did the rodeo when he was younger," says one of the sons, Jace, "But he never had the luxury of what we have, of having his own arena and going to a rodeo every weekend." Brett shares that he wants his kids to have those same experiences. "I wanted to pass that opportunity on to my kids. To let them experience that Western way of life and the Western experience. Even though I'm not an expert, these guys all rode better than I ever did. It was neat to be able to give them the opportunity to do it."

Along with the rodeo, the family plays numerous sports. Their sons are involved in wrestling and football, and their daughter, Josie, played basketball and volleyball. Blair (19), Burk (17), and Jace (16) all played for the same football team in 2022 when they won the 9AA State Championship. They have also taken home championships in State wrestling. With such heavy activity involvement, it takes a lot of structure and a strong family bond to keep it all going.

"Balancing three sports is tough," Blair explains. "They all don't fall at the same time, but they're one after another. It's football in the fall, wrestling in the winter, and rodeo in the spring and summer. But I wouldn't trade it for anything, even though it's stressful at times. It's a lot of fun, and I know I'll look back and smile." Brett shares what it is like for him as a parent. "It's sure challenging with these boys being multi-sport athletes. We get stretched pretty thin from time to time, but we try to keep it all in perspective. Faith is important to us, next comes family, and then fun. So, we try to approach it that way. It's challenging, but we do the best we can."

While the family focuses on hard work, good grades, and connection, their faith is most important to them. Brett and Paula explain how faith is the foundation of their closeness as a family and is at the core of everything

they do. Even during the busiest seasons and times on the road, they always attend Sunday Mass.

"We believe that our faith is most important," says Brett. "Things don't always go perfect, and sometimes things go great. In the good times and the challenging times, we just have got to have strong faith and believe it's for a reason and keep charging forward. Our faith is strong. It's behind everything we do." Paula continues the conversation. "There is a lot of pressure and expectation. But to get better, you have to be dedicated. What's most important to me, and I think they've done well, is their faith life. That's the key to everything."

Along with their parents, the oldest brother Lane has played a considerable role in inspiring and supporting his younger siblings. Lane has an MD from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and will start a residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, in July. He will specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

"Lane kind of paved the way for me and my brothers," says Jace, "he kind of paved the way for all three of us." Burk continues by saying "There's a lot of people I look up to, but my other brother, Lane, I'm kind of trying to follow in his footsteps."

Lane expresses what it is like to be a role model and his experience now that he doesn't live at home. "It's pretty special for me to be a part of their lives like that. It's fun for me to come back, help guide them, and be a part of their lives. To be able to kind of go through the trials of their life, the sports, academics, all the things. It kind of comes back to what we talked about previously. Our family is a big thing for us, so me being here with them is special to me.

The Blasius family inspires a close-knit and involved South Dakotan family. Paula ends by saying, "My hope for all my kids, number one, is that their faith base is solid. To continue that, get through school, meet the right person, raise a family, and make a difference in this world. That's what my hope is for my kids."

Be sure to tune into all the rodeo highlights and see which South Dakota athletes punched their ticket to nationals on SDPB1 Thursday, July 6, 8pm (7 MT).

SDPB IN THE COMMUNITY

A videography workshop was held with SDPB’s Director of Entertainment, Brad Van Osdel, at the Veterans Memorial Youth Center in Agency Village near Sisseton. Whether filming interviews, documenting events, or just getting people to laugh - the goal of this primer was to start participants on the path to telling their own stories through video.

SDPB offered coverage of the inaugural SDHSAA Softball Championships in June. Congratulations to all South Dakota athletes!

WAGoN MAStEr: hANSEN’S hAND-crAftED hIStory

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” That is a phrase that Doug Hansen takes to heart. Doug has been custom building and restoring ox, mule, and horse-drawn vehicles from the 1800s and early 1900s since 1978. He and his team make everything from scratch, using many original 19th-century hand tools and techniques that those who mastered this craft during the heyday of emigrant trails also used. It's an intensive effort, from designing by eye, to shaping the wood, blacksmithing the iron, upholstering, painting, and detailing. A Concord Stagecoach takes 1200 hours to build, no small feat.

Every member of South Dakota Public Broadcasting is promoting our mission to educate and entertain. Our hope is that our younger members understand just how important they are to the future of our mission. The upcoming generations will play an invaluable role in our ongoing abilities. With this in mind, we highlight one of those members, Sarah Miller, who, even though she is just in her early 30s, has noticed the impact of public broadcasting and has supported it since she was only 19.

"When I started college," shares Sarah, "I became more aware and began to form my own opinions around my political and foundational beliefs as a young adult. I realized how often I would be out searching for updated stories on things that were happening in the climate at the time. Whether it was online or just hopping in the car to commute from college on the weekends, I would have SDPB on in my car, and it always had eye-opening and solid news. It's really a non-biased news source. That got me inspired because I just had that young, burning heart for becoming involved in different things and trying to figure out how I could start giving back. It felt really good that I could give as little as $5 a month, all my college budget could afford. I thought, 'I can make a difference with this.' I felt like I was gaining so much and like it was an easy starting place.

Sarah explains that engaging with SDPB's content helps us get out of our comfort zones and quickly learn about other communities.

"I really think that connection is a big thing that SDPB gives to the community. I appreciate how much I have learned about other areas of South Dakota, and I think it's easy to stick to that one community you grow up in and be used to it. If you drive on I-90, you kind of feel like there's nothing between Rapid and Sioux Falls, but the reality is there's so many cool, interesting communities and stories. I think the connection is a really big thing that SDPB offers."

With a wide range of members from all corners of the state, Sarah shares what it has been like being of the younger demographic and the benefits of knowing those of all ages and backgrounds.

"It is funny because I'm often the youngest person that comes to some of the events SDPB hosts, but it's fun because I think you can learn so much from different people and different age groups. I enjoy it when I go to an event and I'm the youngest person; I sit and talk to like all of these wonderful older people I may never talk to otherwise. It's eye-opening, and it reminds you, 'Wow, I live in a really diverse community with different opinions."

SDPB understands the importance of every one of our members and appreciates the roles our younger members bring to the future generation of supporters.
