Last year, Edward Snowden downloaded tens of thousands of top-secret documents from a highly secure government computer network. The revelations that followed touched off a fierce debate over the massive surveillance operations conducted by the National Security Agency. Now, Frontline investigates the United States of Secrets in a two-part, three-hour program.. Through exclusive interviews with intelligence insiders, cabinet officials and government whistle-blowers, part one reveals how the U.S. government came to monitor the communications of millions of Americans and to collect billions of records on ordinary people around the world. They build dams and change ecosystems. A growing number of scientists, conservationists and grassroots environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools in the effort to reverse the disastrous effects of global warming and worldwide water shortages. Nature examines the lives of these industrious rodents in Leave It to Beavers. Once valued for their fur or hunted as pests, beavers are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands. The half-hour show premieres on Thursday, May 1, at 8pm (7 MT), with an encore on Sunday, May 4, at 1pm (Noon MT). Left: Actors help illustrate one of the stories depicted by music in “Scheharazade.” Right: Delta David Gier explains the meaning of music during the Young People’s Concert.
Music Comes Alive for Young Students
The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Delta David Gier unravel the meaning of classical music each year in the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s Young People’s Concert. This year’s concert, airing on SDPB1 Television on Sunday, May 11, at 2pm (1 MT), features portions of “Scheharazade.” Classical music tells a story, but sometimes the nuances are not clear to novice listeners. The lesson on “Scheherazade,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s passionate and exotic retelling of the ancient literary classic “Arabian Nights,” combines music, explanations from Gier, and actors who help children, as well as adults who tune in the program, visualize the stories in the music. The Symphony’s annual concert for kids reaches 5,000 elementary school-aged children in the Sioux Falls region directly via three concert presentations over the course of a day. Via SDPB Television, it reaches a statewide audience. The concert was taped on Feb. 24 at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. May 2014 17

Listeners are invited to read the book in advance of the hour-long interview or get a copy by joining the Dakota Midday Book Club. The book club is open to Friends of SDPB supporters who dontate $300 annually, or $25 per month.
