Friends Office:

Drama Fans Rejoice for Downton Abbey III SDPB1: Sundays, Jan. 6-Feb. 17, 8pm (7 MT)

Will Mr. Bates get out of prison? Will Lord Grantham face bankruptcy? Will Mary and Matthew find happiness? What is the evil O’Brien up to now? Masterpiece Classic Downton Abbey begins its third season this month with seven fantastic episodes beginning on Jan. 6 at 8pm (7 MT). Last season closed with the reluctant heir to Downton, Matthew Crawley, recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with the eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, Lady Mary. But in a shocking development, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil, has eloped to Ireland with the political-minded chauffeur, Branson, and is expecting a child. Meanwhile, Bates is in prison for allegedly killing his first wife, while his beloved Anna struggles to find a way to free him. All is not tranquil at Downton Abbey. The season also brings together two foes – Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham and guest star Shirley MacLaine as the American mother of the Countess of Grantham. Sparks will fly. Don’t worry if all your questions aren’t answered. A fourth season of Downton Abbey is in production. Downton Abbey III airs over seven Sundays, featuring 9 ½ hours of drama, beginning with a two-hour premiere on Jan. 6 and concluding with a ninety-minute finale on Feb. 17. As the United States headed for civil war in the mid-1800s, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown led the most important civil rights crusade in American history. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, American Experience presents The Abolitionists. The three-part series brings to life the epic struggles of the men and women who fought to end slavery. The three-hour series weaves drama with traditional documentary storytelling to show how the abolitionists exposed the flaw in the land of the free – a republic founded on liberty for some and bondage for others.

Part One: 1820s-1838 •

• • •

Angelina Grimké, the daughter of a wealthy plantation family, abandons her life of privilege and moves to the North, becoming a persuasive public speaker against slavery. Frederick Douglass, a young slave, finds hope when he hears about the abolitionists. William Lloyd Garrison founds the newspaper The Liberator. Harriet Beecher Stowe witnesses the brutality of slavery in her first trip to the South, and shares this impression through her writing. John Brown is galvanized by the murder of an anti-slavery activist.

Part Two: 1838-1854 •

Frederick Douglass escapes slavery and becomes a powerful orator, reaching tens of thousands more with the publication of his autobiography. When threatened with capture by his former owner, Douglass flees to England, where he experiences life as a free man for the first time. John Brown reveals his radical plan to

raise an army, attack plantations and free the slaves. Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852.

Part Three: 1854-Emancipation and Victory •

• • • • •

Slave states and free states fight over which side new territories will take. Kansas is the front line of a bloody battle between pro-slavery and freesoil contingents. John Brown attacks Harpers Ferry and is captured and executed, becoming a martyr for the cause. Abraham Lincoln is elected president. The country descends into chaos as Southern states secede. War breaks out. The Emancipation Proclamation is signed. In December 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment is ratified, banning slavery in all states. January 2013

dirt track auto racing association. Hang Gliding – Devin Wagner of Yankton (pictured) and Perry Volden of Sioux Falls take to the skies over Southeastern South Dakota. • Parkour – Parkour is essentially about running an obstacle course, but the obstacles are those found in whatever environment the runner happens to be in. Dakota Life looks at the fascinating faces, places and stories that make living in South Dakota so interesting. Tune in, because you’re living the Dakota Life. •

Programs Explore Women’s Contributions Women – in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy – have helped shape America over the past 50 years through one of the most sweeping social revolutions in our country’s history. NOVA Doomsday Volcanoes

SDPB1: Wednesday, Jan. 2, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Thursday, Jan. 3, 6pm (5 MT) & 11 pm (10 MT)

The eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 turned much of the northern hemisphere into an ash-strewn no-fly zone. But Eyjafjallajökull was just the start. Katla, an Icelandic volcano 10 times bigger, has begun to swell and grumble. Two more giants, Hekla and Laki, could erupt without warning. Iceland is a ticking time bomb: When it blows, the consequences will be global. Meet scientists trying to understand those consequences – for air travel and for the global food supply and Earth’s climate. Could we be plunged into years of cold and famine? What can we do to prepare for the coming disaster? Life on Fire

SDPB1: Wednesdays, Jan. 2-Feb. 6, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Thursdays, Jan. 3-Feb. 7 7pm (6 MT) & Midnight (11 MT)

Volcanoes are among the most spectacular and powerful forces on our planet. They create new land, change landscapes and destroy civilizations, but more than 2 billion years ago, they also breathed life into our world. This six-part series explores volcanoes and how they have and will affect life on earth. From the ocean abyss to snow-covered summits, this ambitious series paints a detailed picture of the struggles and amazing intimacy required to survive around volcanoes. Spectacular scenery provides the backdrop for the extraordinary animals and plants that have learned to juggle with fire. Fragile and engaging, these creatures teach us lessons in survival in a world as fascinating as it is dangerous. Great Performances Paul Simon’s Graceland Journey SDPB1: Friday, Jan. 4, 9pm (8 MT)

Paul Simon’s Graceland album, an experiment in cross-cultural collaboration, was also commercially popular, selling 14 million albums worldwide and winning 8

Grammys for “Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for the title track. Today, it’s considered one of the most significant recordings of its time. But why was Graceland so controversial in 1986? Why did Simon face such vehement criticism? In 2011, filmmaker Joe Berlinger accompanied Simon on his return to South Africa to reunite and perform with several of the musicians involved in the original album, capturing Simon’s unique homecoming as he reflects on the landmark events.

Frontline Inside Obama’s Presidency

SDPB1: Tuesday, Jan. 15, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Wednesday, Jan. 16, 5pm (4 MT) & 8pm (7 MT)

As Barack Obama is sworn in for his second term, Frontline takes a probing look at the first four years of his presidency. With inside accounts from his battles with his Republican opponents over health care and the economy to his dramatic expansion of targeted killings of enemies, Frontline examines the president’s key decisions and the experiences that will inform his second term.

Sunday All Things Considered Time Changes

Radio’s All Things Considered has moved to 4pm (3 MT) on Sundays. The awardwinning newsmagazine now starts at the same time seven days a week. Since its debut in 1971, All Things Considered has delivered in-depth reporting and transformed the way listeners understand current events and view the world.

Every weekday, hosts Melissa Block , Robert Siegel, and Audie Cornish present 2½ hours of breaking news mixed with compelling analysis, insightful commentaries, interviews, and special – sometimes quirky – features. Guy Raz hosts a one-hour edition of the program on Saturdays and Sundays. January 2013 19
