It seems that summer has finally arrived! The sun is shining, the temps are warmer, and the trees finally have leaves. Another sure sign of summer is the increase in tourists visiting our fine state.

Tourism is South Dakota’s second largest industry, only second to agriculture, and has an impact on every city and town throughout South Dakota.

Youmaybeaskingyourselfwhatyourmunicipalitycando toensurethatthosetravelingthrough, goawaywithagreat first (or second or third) impression. That is simple, it is simply taking pride in your community!

What is the first thing that someone sees when arriving to your town? Your welcome sign, of course. The small gesture of making sure that not only your welcome sign, but all directional signs around your town are clear of brush and easy to read is a sure way to make a great first impression. You may also want to make sure that your town is free of excess garbage, weeds and anything else that may be considered an eye sore in areas common to travelers.

Tourism depends on strong local support and your local government is a key partner in growing tourism in your area. Does your city or town have a handout or brochure to pass along to those visiting the area? This is a wonderful opportunity for you to highlight all of the great things you have to offer! Whether your town is someone’s final destination orjustastopalongtheway, you play an integral part in the experience that they have while there.

Does your community have an event coming up this summer? Send your event information to Sara at sara@sdmunicipalleague.org to have it listed in the magazine. Find July ’s Hometown Happenings on page 47 of this issue.

Enjoy your summer and remember that some of South Dakota’s best tourism destinations are right next door (or the next town over)!
