Groton, South Dakota, was founded in 1881 as a railroad stop, located at the junction of US Highway 12 and SD Highway 37. With a growing population of 1,458 people in the 2010 census, Groton serves as a hub for smaller outlying towns and the surrounding agricultural community. Groton has become a full-service community, providing electrical power and other utilities as well as business and recreational opportunities.

Groton has a small but healthy business district along Highway 12 and downtown. The Groton business district will meet all of your family needs. A new grocery store along with an adjoining strip mall is an impressive new addition to the city. Within that strip mall is a clinic with a full-time physician’s assistant. Across the street from the strip mall is a drug store and a chiropractor’s offi ce. A fully staffed and certifi ed nursing home with an Alzheimer’s unit as well as an independent senior living facility is located within the city limits. The Groton Transit bus system is available to transport individuals to the bank, grocery store, school events, etc. It is also used daily to take pre-school children to and from day care and school. The transit bus also provides medical runs to doctors in Aberdeen. The City of Groton has many unique businesses that provide employment for many individuals and service to the entire community.

Groton is a family friendly community, offering a large range of recreation activities. An impressive baseball/softball complex is located on the west side of town along with the soccer fi elds and ice-skating rink. The 2009 swimming pool has tennis and basketball courts located on its eastern edge. The city park has a playground and a walking path as well as places to camp overnight. Volunteers work with the Scouts, 4-H clubs, and youth football. Visitors will also fi nd an excellent nine-hole golf course with a driving range, club house, and cart rentals.

The Groton Area School District extends into five counties and includes nearly 600 students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. It has been identifi ed as a “Distinguished District” on the 2010 NCLB Report Card. To achieve this top rating, the school must meet several high standards, met only by four other school districts in the state of South Dakota.

Groton is a small but growing community that provides a relaxed and friendly living environment. Groton shows continued growth as a great place to live. ■
