2017 Municipal/School Election Workshops
Presented by: South Dakota Municipal League • Office of South Dakota Secretary of State Associated School Boards of South Dakota
One in-person workshop and five webinar workshops are scheduled to assist election officers in conducting elections. The Secretary of State’s office,Associated School Boards of South Dakota and the SouthDakotaMunicipalLeaguewillagainco-sponsorworkshopscoveringallaspectsofelections –from notices to the final canvass – including question-and-answer sessions.

Municipal finance officers and school business managers have statutory responsibility to conduct elections in their local jurisdictions. Properly conducted elections are an integral part of the democratic process.The many hours of diligent work on the part of the election officers enhances candidate and voter participation, andprovidesforaccurateandconsistentelections.

State Historical Society Announces Fall Deadwood Fund Grant
The South Dakota State Historical Society announces that the applications for the next round of the Deadwood Fund grant program should be postmarked no later than Oct. 1 for work beginning no sooner than Jan. 1, 2018.
The program is designed to encourage large-scale restoration or rehabilitation of historic properties by individuals, organizations or public agencies, according to JayD.Vogt,directoroftheStateHistoricalSociety,whose historic preservation office administers the program.
Grantswillbeawardedinamountsrangingfrom$1,000to $25,000. The grant amount must be matched on a dollarfor-dollar basis from nonfederal and non-state sources. Nonprofit organizations will be allowed to use in-kind services for one-half of their match.
In 2016, $108,204 was distributed among 11 projects, which had matching funds of $291,301. This resulted in a total public-private investment of $399,505.
Funding for the program is from Deadwood gaming revenue earmarked by state law for historic preservation projects throughout the state and distributed by the State Historical Society.
