SDML Statement of Policy Review Begins

SDML Statement of Policy Review Begins, Committees Seek Member Input

Over the next few months, the South Dakota Municipal League will be conducting its annual review of the association’s offi cial Statement of Policy.

The policy guides the League staff and lobbyists during the legislative session and functions as a reference for the League’s position on various issues affecting local government.

In June, SDML President Steve Allender appointed policy committee members - representing all sizes of cities and all regions of the state - to serve on four policy committees. (See pages 12 and 13 for a list of committee members.) The committees review and recommend changes to the Statement of Policy which are submitted to the Resolutions Committee. The SDML membership votes to accept these recommendations at the annual business meeting in October.

Input from SDML members is a crucial part of the process. Members can review the current policy, view committee members, and submit their suggestions online at sdmunicipalleague.org/statementofpolicy.

Suggestions may also be brought up from the fl oor on Oct. 7, during the Annual Business Meeting held at the SDML Annual Conference, October 4-7, 2022, in Watertown, SD. ■

CHRIS HILL | SDML DIRECTOR OF MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC SERVICES

The annual SDMEA Golf Tournament was held June 7 at the Madison Country Club in Madison, SD. It was raining on my way to Madison from Plankinton, but when I arrived at 7 a.m., the weather took a turn for the best and it ended up being a wonderful day for us to visit with businesses throughout the electrical industry.

The day could not have been possible without our sponsors, and I would like to give them some recognition in this article as each of them made the day better by participating in our tournament. Our sponsors for the 2022 SDMEA Tournament were: Border States Electric, Dakota Supply Group, Dave’s Construction, Deb Birgen, DGR, Electrotech, Farmers and Merchants State Bank, First Bank and Trust, Frieberg, Nelson, & Ask, Graybar, Guggenmos & Associates, HDR, Heartland Consumers Power District, Milwaukee Tool, Okonite, Olinger Law Firm, RESCO, Terex, Tom Heller, T & R Electric, Wesco, Yvonne Taylor. Some sponsors were only there in spirit as we had 16 total teams.

T&R Electric were the defending champions again this year. Kylie Westover, Keaton Westover, Wesley Heimstra, and Ryan Schnieder from T&R shot a 59 to win the tournament. Congratulations to T&R and thank you to all of sponsors!

With the summer finally here and our golf tournament over, the next thing on the agenda is member visits! I will be reaching out to you all to set up times to get together and visit about your hometown and projects for the summer. I have also been compiling the Comparison of Operations Survey and will be able to present the results of that for you as well. I look forward to seeing you all and finding out what has been happening since I last saw you.

Russell Halgerson and Chris Hill welcome golfers to the SDMEA Golf Tournament June 7.

We also have one more event scheduled that I would like you to put on your schedule. We are going to do a trap shoot Sept. 21 at Hunters Pointe near Humboldt, SD. I’m hoping for another great turnout and to have great representation from our members. Please consider

attending and having a great time with us.

Finally, the primary elections are complete. Please visit with your local legislators and explain the importance of municipal electric utilities in your community. The general election will be Nov. 8. There will be some new faces up in Pierre next January and chances are that you know your local representatives better than we do. We will also be reaching out to our legislators, but it is always great when they have some understanding of electric utilities and why they are important to your community. Let them know how hard you work to make your HOMETOWN great! ■
