MITCHELL TIFFANY BATDORF, DIRECTOR MITCHELL AREA CHAMBEROF COMMERCE/CVB

Outside Expectations

Mitchell, located in southeastern South Dakota, embodies all the characteristics of a typical Midwestern Town. The community icon, the Corn Palace, enjoys more than 300,000 visitors annually, our hospitality, trendy boutiques, thriving business community, and jam-packed event schedule keep them coming back.

The World’s Only Corn Palace, our whimsical community icon, has attracted the unusual, the notable and the road-weary to Mitchell’s Main Street for more than 125 years. The Corn Palace undergoes a majestic transformation each year, some 325,000 colorful ears of corn are painstakingly sliced and nailed into place. A local labor of love, the corn – 13 colors! – is grown and harvested by Mitchell farmers, and the murals are designed by students at Dakota Wesleyan University. It is a year-round process of removing redesigning and recreating.

Mitchell is also home to the Prehistoric Indian Village on the shores of Lake Mitchell. It is the only active archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. In the Thomsen Center Archeodome, summer visitors can watch archeology students and interns uncover clues about the people who lived here 1,000 years ago.

With recreation indoor and outdoor, there is fun to be had by all. Just minutes from downtown, Lake Mitchell is a source of fun and activity, surrounded by 13 miles of hiking and biking trails in a beautiful, tranquil setting. The Mitchell Activities Center ice arena offers open skate and ice bumper boats. The Indoor Aquatic Center has fun for all ages, and the adjacent Mitchell Recreation center has whatever you need to get your heart pumping.

Mitchell offers the best of small-town living with biggercity possibilities. Experience the Mitchell difference: in our schools, our vibrant family-centered amenities, the hundreds of jobs we offer, the quality of life, and affordable living. With unbounded possibility, Mitchell is a community of people who outthink, outproduce and outperform. We’re a unique and surprising place. In Mitchell we take pride in our rich history and Midwest tradition, and we set high expectations for our future – a future of local prosperity and inclusion, secured by our diverse economy, robust technology, and awardwinning educational options. In Mitchell, we are committed to creating possibilities and that starts early. Whether you choose public or parochial education, you’ll love watching the possibilities that grow with your child. Two higher education institutions, stateof-the-art technology, and an affordable, safe, friendly lifestyle making Mitchell a great place to live and visit. ■
