The Pierre/Fort Pierre area is the heartbeat of South Dakota. In addition to serving as the State Capital, Pierre and Fort Pierre are a unique mix where the old west meets new technology, and the hustle and bustle of government is tempered by a plethora of things to see and do. Art and history abound and there’s no better place to sit back and relax. Where else can you work a satisfying eight-hour day, and still have an opportunity for an evening on the water?

Our vibrant community is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. With the beautiful Missouri River, Lake Oahe, five campgrounds and twelve parks, there’s no shortage of recreational activities. Fishing, boating, skiing, scuba diving, kayaking – just about anything you can think of to do on the water, you can fi nd here. If you like hunting, you don’t need to go far to find everything from pheasants to prairie dogs. Over 50 miles of maintained multi-purpose trails provide opportunity to walk or bike, including our nationally recognized play trail. For those that like golfi ng there are two golf courses you can take a swing at and two disc golf courses within our community parks. With a combined population just over 16,000, Pierre and Fort Pierre are large enough to meet someone new each day, yet small enough to see familiar faces at the grocery store. Our communities boast a rich heritage, and our diverse economy is anchored by state government. In addition, agriculture, healthcare, construction, technology, and tourism all play signifi cant roles.

The state-of-the-art Pierre Regional Airport has several daily flights to Denver. Our central location makes it convenient to travel both across the state and across the country. When visiting, you have many choices for sleeping accommodations. From under the stars to a luxury suite – the choices are as vast as the open prairie. If you have worked up an appetite, Pierre and Fort Pierre are fi lled with a variety of culinary treats, from home cooking style to steak house to gourmet coffee shops. The communities offer a wide variety of retail to cover most everything you could possibly want or need; an array including home décor, hardware, lumber, specialty shops, boutiques, clothing and more!

Our historic traditions are rich. Fort Pierre, the oldest continuous European settlement in Dakota Territory, celebrated its Bicentennial in 2017.
