s is customary for this publication, Full & By documents a few of the most recent chapters in the life of our Museum and of our entire Museum family. You’ll read about San Salvador’s latest series of California voyages, the connections we’ve made with Star of India’s birthplace in Isle of Man, the experience of being part of the massive effort in getting an entire fleet of Museum tall ships, Museum escorts, visiting ships, volunteer safety escort vessels, tugs, pilots, press boats, shore support, and guests: all told the participation of more than 800 people over the course of a weekend. You’ll also read about the far reach we extend thereby – from visitors around the world, to the ports we visit in San Salvador and to our fellow Pacific voyagers sailing with us in Hokule’a who have restored to present day practice incredible feats of Pacific navigation conducted more than a thousand years ago.

This may be an issue of the Full & By, but it’s really one snapshot of ongoing culmination in achievement through celebration of Pacific seafaring heritage, the passing of knowledge from one generation to another, the appreciation for all the generations of voyagers past and generations since as caretakers of that heritage, and the presentation of that entire process in performing difficult tasks in homage to that legacy. No other museum has a publication like Full & By because no other museum in the world is capable of anything like what these pages record. Why? Perhaps it’s partially because our Museum is unique in getting its start as part of a zoo, and now finds that being the caretaker of ships as living things has always been part of its institutional DNA. So Full & By is partly a document of things we did, and it’s also an opportunity to express appreciation for the enormity of effort that made those things possible, building upon the devotion of five generations of San Diegans who have given their time and resources in passing an institutional gift to the future. I think it’s safe to say that these pages reflect something that all our members of years past would have been proud to be part of. So as our undertakings reflect effort, skill, devotion, teamwork and generosity of our members, volunteers, donors, and staff, it’s not just for the joy of achievement in the moment that we are doing this, but because we are also building on a well-established momentum so that future readers of the Full & By will someday take satisfaction in achievements we ourselves can scarcely now imagine, and perhaps reflect back on how the efforts and generosity of our own moment made those future achievements possible.

So, in the joy of moments reflected in these pages, and in best wishes to everyone for a fantastic new year, thank you!

New Faces in New Places My name is Kate O’Neill and I am very excited to be the new Membership Manager with the Maritime Museum of San Diego. I moved to San Diego two years ago from the Boston area and have been enjoying the abundance of sun and lack of snow. My background is in nonprofit programming and membership. In my new role, I am most looking forward to engaging with the membership community through new events and programming and updating the systems surrounding member data and communications.

San Salvador’s Pacific Heritage Tour 2023 Susan Sirota

S

an Salvador set sail on August 1, 2023, and returned safely back to the Maritime Museum one month later, on September 1, 2023. With all the masts at the Museum, visitors might not even have noticed that San Salvador was missing, but to the host ports of the Pacific Heritage Tour (PHT), San Salvador was a superstar attraction. This year’s PHT consisted of

two port stops with public dockside tours and then two adventure sail legs with passengers through the northern and southern Channel Islands. This year’s tour, like PHTs of the past, garnered record-breaking crowds, fantastic sailing, and a whole lot of unique situations that engender admiration, attention and gratitude from the port cities and their communities.

San Salvador’s Pacific Heritage Tour 2023 Continued The weather, prevailing winds, and currents that Cabrillo likewise navigated back in 1542, make the voyage north uncomfortable, if not impossible. However, unlike Cabrillo, our San Salvador has two John Deere diesel engines, and we can power our way north. While the weather was for the most part cooperating, we did take on some large swells over the bow, completely submerging our first mate Alex Saikowski in the beakhead while green sea waterfalls flowed down the forward deck ladders. The ship suffered only a few broken deck planks that were quickly fixed once we got to port. If one surveyed the crew, they would say it was actually good fun and between all the deadhead legs to get the ship north, the crew rose to every challenge, with laughter, comradery, and remarkable seamanship.

For the first port stop, we were invited to Santa Barbara during “Old Spanish Days Fiesta” celebrations to offer free public tours and be the host venue for two private events, each with live entertainment on board. To help us with the day-tour crowds we enlisted the help of a Cabrillo National Monument interpreter who gave history introductions to visitors. According to our host, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, we had over 800 visitors each day touring San Salvador. The tours had two-hour lines from the moment we opened to the moment we closed for private events, which unfortunately, left many disappointed visitors unable to see the ship. To add to our exhaustion, the Port of Santa Barbara required us to move the ship back and forth from the marina to the public dock each day.

Visitors would be lined up before we even had a chance to catch our mooring lines or our breaths. After two grueling days, Captain Ashley left Santa Barbara for Morro Bay at exactly the right time finding the wind window around Point

Conception. We were lucky, unlike many other vessels in the area.

Arriving two days early to Morro Bay gave us our voices back and time to return the ship to exhibit mode. The crowds of visitors in Morro Bay exceeded 1000 per day, and just like our visit in 2017, the folks at the Morro Bay Maritime Museum were exceedingly warm and welcoming and able to successfully garner the resources of their small community to put on a big event. To help make Morro Bay’s event a truly magnificent experience, the Morro Bay Maritime Museum invited the local indigenous tribe, the Salinan people, to exhibit educational booths alongside San Salvador.

The tribal elder, Pam Flood, fed everyone elderberry jam and acorn bread while Donnie Pierce and other tribal members engaged the public with crafts and tribal education. Between the MBMM’s fundraiser event and the ticket sales from dockside tours, the Morro Bay Maritime Museum will now be able to expand their museum’s footprint and build another building extension. This was particularly satisfying because it was San Salvador’s first visit to Morro Bay that allowed the organization to break ground and start their physical museum.

San Salvador’s Pacific Heritage Tour 2023 Continued Hurricane Hilary prevented us from leaving Morro Bay as scheduled, but it did not prevent the adventure legs from taking the ship through the remote and beautiful islands of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Our passengers were up for crew training, they learned their seamanship and were seamlessly worked into the crew by the time we were homeward bound. On the first leg, passengers had the perfect weather for hiking and a surprise fishing bonanza. Everyone who wanted to hook a fish did, while our cook, Carter Sirota, single-handedly filleted and prepared fresh fish tacos for the entire ship. Between the expert lectures, sailing lessons and all the laughter, the crew and passengers had a unique tall ship Channel Island adventure that made coming home a sweet yet somber affair.

So how do we justify taking San Salvador away?

Well, it helps to remind us that the State of California was the single largest financial supporter of San Salvador’s construction, likewise San Salvador was awarded the coveted 2017 Governor’s Award for State Historic Preservation. For these reasons, we have internalized an obligation to make San Salvador a state resource and although our debt in many ways has been “paid,” we continue to get record-breaking attendance and attention away from our homeport of San Diego every time.

This year’s Pacific Heritage Tour and Adventure Sails were no exception; not the crew legs, the public tours, nor the adventure legs, each part of the voyages was a reminder of the power and pull that a unique state symbol continues to capture and captivates people’s attention and imagination. San Salvador is something to be proud of, and it’s an impressive reminder of how San Salvador moves our mission beyond our shores.

Star of India Sails into History Celebrating 160 Years of Maritime Glory

he historic Star of India set sail on San Diego Bay on November 11th and 12th, embarking on a remarkable journey to celebrate her 160th anniversary. The iconic vessel, a living testament to maritime history, once again took to the open seas, evoking nostalgia and excitement as she set sail for the first time in five years.

The occasion was not merely an acknowledgment of her age, but a celebration of the enduring spirit of exploration and adventure that has characterized her remarkable journey. Over the years, the ship has weathered storms, explored distant lands, and bore witness to the ebb and flow of history, embodying the resilience and tenacity of the human spirit.

o mark the 160th anniversary of the Star of India, 14 members of the Clodieryn theatre group from Ramsey, Isle of Man, made a special trip to San Diego. Their musical performance, which paid tribute to the history of the Star, was met with tremendous excitement and enthusiasm. Their infectious energy added an extra layer of joy to the weekend festivities, making an already memorable occasion that much more unforgettable. Any chance to showcase their talents through performance or song was eagerly embraced, further enhancing the overall experience.

A Highly Functioning Band of Weirdos

s I reflect on a successful Star sail weekend, I think of all the details that came together in order for this unique and odd experience to work and work well. As a crew, a volunteer crew at that, which I will touch on later, we made the weekend

look easy. Often more than not, something that looks easy on the outside, took way more effort, planning, time, talent, and practice than an outsider gets to see.

And although the Museum has pulled off this feat in the past, it’s never the same act at the circus when it comes back to town. There might be the same tents, but the faces have changed. Except for a few. You know who you are…

And with the change in faces comes a change in knowledge and skill level. The only thing that carries on unchanged is the physical acts of hands on lines and the spirit and attitudes of those manning those lines.

From an organizational/project management perspective, going from the idea of “let’s sail our 160-year-old tall ship with two other tall ships using a volunteer crew” to making it happen is a mountain of work that takes a village. There have been many leaders whom have stepped up to help teach Sail 101. These leaders not only passed along the knowledge of tall ship handling, but also helped motivate, mentor, and pass along the attitude and mindset of a good team member. There has been ship maintenance, inspections, permitting, event planning, sched-

uling up the wahzoo, catering, ticket sales, volunteer tracking, and the list goes on. None of these tasks are particularly fun, but it happened. And for each task that was checked off the list, a face, or many faces, were behind its accomplishments. Which brings me next and lastly to our volunteer crew.

Without our volunteer crew, our Museum is just another dock side attraction. And there is one thing we all have in common.

We all showed up. For whatever interest you had and whatever your expectations were when you arrived, you took that first step to start something new. You stepped into a whole new world with new faces and new challenges. You may have had sailing experience in the past or came as a blank canvas. But here you are. You worked hard to learn. You worked hard physically, you worked hard mentally. You gave your time and efforts to do something demanding and different. And for those of you whom have been around a while, you passed on your knowledge to the new crew and kept this experience going. Every one of you should be proud of your accomplishments.

Although I am trying by writing this, I don’t think I

could accurately express the level of which I have seen the highest of dedication, determinism, pride, and camaraderie that comes with being one of our volunteer crew members. We’re all a bunch of weirdos. A group of finer people don’t exist.

As I’m out on San Salvador shouting orders loud enough for my crew, and apparently the rest of San Diego to hear, I am often approached by guests that all have the same thought. They ask if I’ve been sailing all my life. They are always surprised when I tell them that the Museum taught me everything I know. That when I started, the only thing I knew was that I liked the way tall ships looked. Then they are amazed when I tell them that our crew are all volunteers. I’ll often have the crew members nearest to me announce what they do/did for a living. The answers are always so different and diverse. It’s a reminder of how great the sail program is and the people in it. I consider it an honor to work with all of you. So, take a moment to be proud of all that which you have accomplished and let’s keep this good thing going. Three cheers to you!

Hokule’a Voyaging Canoe Visits MMSD

he iconic voyaging canoe Hokule’a made a historic visit to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, captivating visitors with its rich cultural heritage and remarkable seafaring legacy. The arrival of Hokule’a, renowned for its voyages across the Pacific using traditional Polynesian wayfinding techniques, marked a significant occasion that celebrated the spirit of exploration and the enduring traditions of Pacific Island navigation.

The Hokule’a, meaning “Star of Gladness” in Hawaiian, is a symbol of the renaissance of Polynesian voyaging and a testament to the ingenuity and skill of ancient seafarers. Led by a crew of dedicated navigators and sailors, the vessel has undertaken ambitious journeys, reviving the art of wayfinding without modern instruments. Hokule’a’s voyages have fostered cultural exchange and environmental awareness, promoting the concept of “Malama Honua” or “caring for our Earth.”

As the Hokule’a arrived at the Maritime Museum of

San Diego, it brought with it a sense of reverence for maritime history and the interconnectedness of diverse cultures across the Pacific. Visitors had the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the craftsmanship and seafaring traditions that have been passed down through generations.
