There are many ways to support Israel and its people, but none is more transformative than a gift to Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency services system. Your gift to MDA isn’t just changing lives — it’s literally saving them — providing critical care and hospital transport for everyone from victims of heart attacks to rocket attacks. Donate today at MagenDavidAdom.org or call 866.632.2763.
Welcome to The Jewish 411 for the year 2026-2027 We have been publishing The 411 since 2011, so if you are a newcomer, welcome! And if you are a regular, welcome back!
Our annual compendium of Southern California businesses, organizations, arts venues, synagogues, restaurants, delis, caterers and bakeries, family services, senior services and day schools is here . NA’AMAT Bat Galim brings OC Jewish women together to help women and children in Israel
NA’AMAT Bat Galim is NA’AMAT USA’s three-year-old chapter, where OC Jewish women can meet, connect for fun events, and make a difference . NA’AMAT, formerly Pioneer Women, the largest women’s organization in Israel, is at the forefront of improving the lives of thousands of women, children and families through a critical network of women’s health and rights centers, a domestic violence shelter, daycare centers, youth villages, high schools, scholarship funds and legal aid bureaus
NA’AMAT USA is a dynamic community of Zionist women . With 6,000 members nationwide, it is part of a global movement that has been uplifting women, youth and families for more than a century . From operating 153 affordable daycare centers and 13 technological high schools, to supporting at-risk youth through residential villages, providing scholarships and research grants for women, advancing workplace equality, and combating domestic violence, NA’AMAT is strengthening Israeli society .
The Bat Galim Chapter holds regular events that bring together a vibrant community of Jewish women from throughout Orange County to celebrate holidays or highlight the needs of the organization The chapter has exceeded its fundraising goal for the Sderot Daycare Center, raising $28,000 to help infants and toddlers in Sderot have access to safe, nurturing care Families will receive vital support, and caregivers will have the resources to provide stability, protection and hope during an incredibly challenging time

Student to Student lets Jewish teens share experiences with their peers
When Jewish teens walk into classrooms across Orange County and openly share who they are with other teens, it makes a lasting impression far greater than textbook learning and preconceived notions That’s the premise of Student to Student (STS), a national program that just completed its fifth year in O C STS is designed to help middle and high school students better understand Jews and Judaism and bring greater awareness of religious and cultural differences and commonalities, and ultimately empower students to interrupt antisemitic comments and stereotypes when they hear them inside and outside a school setting .
“What began with 11 students, nine presentations, and visits to just two schools has grown into a cohort of 84 student presenters who, this year alone, shared their stories through 178 presentations at 27 partner schools,” explained Robin Steinmetz, Director of Student to Student and Educational Initiatives at the Jewish Federation of Orange County These students “made the brave decision” to share “their traditions, their family stories, their connection to Jewish identity, the beauty of their community and sometimes personal experiences with antisemitism .” She added that the work is more important than ever “We are living in a moment where misinformation, propaganda, and misunderstanding spread quickly — especially around Jews, Judaism, and Israel,” she said Steinmetz concluded, “The power of storytelling cannot be understated . When you share your personal story — when you allow yourself to be vulnerable — you remind people of your humanity . And in today’s world, we need more opportunities for human connection ”

Sherman’s — The Famous Deli in the Desert
Since opening their first location in 1963, Sherman’s Deli has become a landmark in the desert — a New York deli-style restaurant still owned and operated by Sherman Harris’s son, Sam, and daughter, Janet . Sherman’s offers an extensive menu for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, all reminiscent of an iconic New York deli .
Sherman Harris, a WWII veteran, moved to Palm Springs in 1953, where he worked as a cook at Laury’s Steak Ranch before opening his first deli, which became a tradition and a favorite hangout for locals and more than a few celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Bob Hope Sherman was an active community supporter throughout his years in Palm Springs, and on his 75th birthday, family, friends and restaurant devotees gathered to celebrate his contributions to the community with the unveiling of a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on Palm Canyon Drive . Sherman’s children carry on his legacy of great food and great customer service .
About the menu: All breads and desserts are baked fresh daily . Breakfasts are to die for and feature cinnamon bread French toast as well as all-American breakfasts like omelets and eggs your way The famous Sandwich Board offers more than 40 favorites including corned beef and pastrami piled high on rye, served with fresh and delicious sides Dinners really give the chef a chance to show off, and include rotisserie chicken and roast brisket of beef or BBQ baby back ribs — the locals’ favorite Wines and beer are also on offer
Whether you are a desert-dweller or a vacationer, you will be blown away by the food and service at Sherman’s Deli, and you will be sure to return again and again

With every delivery, JFS checks in on well-being and can connect to additional services, including free home-safety improvements, transportation assistance and care management
The program operates weekdays 10:30 a m -1:30 p m , with frozen meals available for weekends and holidays . To sign up for free meal delivery, call (858) 637-3230 or visit jfssd org/foodmobile

Empowering Dreams: The Lasting Impact of Hebrew Free Loan San Diego
BY MINDI FRANKEL
For many in our community, bridging the gap between financial hardship and a promising future is simply about reaching out for help . This is the key to overcoming challenges and building a bright future Hebrew Free Loan San Diego (HFLSD) is dedicated to assisting individuals in overcoming financial burdens . Established five years ago, HFLSD embodies the Jewish tradition of Gemilut Hasadim, or acts of loving-kindness, by offering interest-free loans to provide economic stability The organization offers a hand up, empowering individuals to navigate life’s pivotal moments without the burden of high-interest debt Whether it’s dealing with financial difficulties, pursuing higher education, starting a small business, or covering unexpected medical expenses, HFLSD provides the necessary funds to move forward with dignity All borrowers are required to meet with a financial planner who offers essential financial tools and budgeting strategies to ensure lasting fiscal health
The sustainability of HFLSD’s model lies in its strength: the “Recycling of Tzedakah ” As loans are repaid, the funds are immediately re-lent to the next person in need, creating a continuous cycle of communal support that has helped hundreds of San Diegans achieve selfsufficiency . In an era of rising costs, HFLSD is committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder our community’s potential By investing in people, they are not only providing financial assistance but also building a more resilient and vibrant San Diego
