Orange County
Orange County Colleges Offer Jewish Curricula
BY ILENE SCHNEIDER
Orange County’s colleges and universities make Jewish studies a community-wide experience while addressing the needs of their students
UC Irvine | uci.edu
At the University of California, Irvine (UCI), the Center for Jewish Studies serves as the hub for the interdisciplinary and comparative study of Jewish and Israeli culture and society at UCI and in Orange County There are public programs and lectures, research opportunities, and ties with Israeli academic institutions
Courses in Jewish Studies give students an opportunity to grow intercultural literacy and study Jews and Judaism within the broader context of dominant societies and the spectrum of the arts, humanities and social sciences A Jewish Studies minor enables training for Jewish community service or Jewish education careers, learning about Jewish issues and opportunities for Jewish service, and developing a deeper understanding of American and world Jewry .
Chapman University | chapman.edu
Chapman University’s Holocaust program includes the Barry and Phyllis Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education It sponsors a series of lectures and events that offer distinguished scholars, innovative filmmakers, and inspiring survivors and rescuers of the Holocaust, as well as those who are voices for justice and human rights in our world today . The late Elie Wiesel lectured there
Chapman offers a minor in Holocaust history . Students take courses with faculty in the history department
The Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Art and Writing Contest at Chapman provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to engage with a Holocaust survivor or rescuer testimony and respond creatively to a specific prompt The Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library’s non-circulating collection includes photographs, documents, oral histories and books
Cypress College | cypresscollege.edu
The only Holocaust History course at a community college on the West Coast is coming to Cypress College in fall 2025 . History 120C is “a study of the history and events of the Holocaust, including the birth of anti-Semitism, the rise of the Nazi Party, the events of World War II, the Nuremberg Trials, and the legacy of the Holocaust, including present-day anti-Semitism on college campuses, and anti-Zionism .” The class will use primary and secondary sources, film, and guest speakers It will explore such topics as the historical roots of anti-Semitism, Hitler’s persecution of marginalized groups, and the impact of the Holocaust on the contemporary world
Cypress College also offers an annual Yom Ha-Shoah program, a portrait gallery of Holocaust survivors, and an educator’s guide to Holocaust programming for younger students .

BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY
On Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, the local chapter of Veterans for Peace, along with the Palm Springs’ American Veterans (AMVETS), hosted their 19th annual award luncheon at the Cimarron Golf Resort in Cathedral City
The event was organized by Tom Swann Hernandez, the founder and commander of the local American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 66
In 1978, while Tom was serving in the Marine Corps, he toured the Nazi Dachau Concentration Camp and was shaken by the horrific scenes . In 2000, Tom worked with the U .S . 6th Army Color Guard to hold a memorial on the 55th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau by the U .S . Army .
The award recipients included four local Holocaust survivors: Goldie Jacoby, Ruth Lindemann, Susan Juhasz, and Rickie Taras .
Additional award recipients included Retired Captain Army Green Beret Scott Grasser; WWII Veteran Bernard Surgil; Silver Helmet Award winner Watson Connolly; Secretary of the General Patton Memorial Leslie M . Cone; and Palm Springs City Councilmember Jeffrey Bernstein
102-year-old Dorothee Irwin, WWII Marine Corps Veteran, was present, and cheered the audience while clapping to the music
The event was accompanied by music and songs by Eve Holmes and JB
JFed of the Desert Screens ‘Ask Dr. Ruth’
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY
TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY
Karola Ruth Westheimer, better known as Dr Ruth, was an American sex therapist and talk show host, born in Germany to a Jewish family . She was an only child
A week after Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Dr . Ruth’s father was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Dachau Concentration Camp
Terrified by the growing antisemitism and violence, Dr . Ruth’s mother decided to send her on the Kindertransport, an organized Jewish children’s rescue, to Switzerland . In addition to Dr . Ruth’s parents, all her other relatives were murdered during the Holocaust
In 1950, Dr . Ruth moved to Paris, where she studied psychology at the Sorbonne Immigrating to the United States in 1956, she worked as a maid to put herself through graduate school, earning a Master of Arts in Sociology from New York’s New School in 1959 and a Doctorate in Education (Ed .D .) from Columbia University in 1970 .
In 1965, Westheimer became a U S citizen Over the next decade, she taught at several universities and had a private sex therapy practice .
Dr Ruth’s media career began in 1980 with the radio call-in show “Sexually Speaking,” which continued until 1990 . In 1983, it was the top-rated radio show in the country’s largest radio market She then launched a television show, “The Dr . Ruth Show,” which by 1985 attracted two million viewers a week
She died at her home in Manhattan on July 12, 2024, at the age of 96 .
On November 10, 2024, The Jewish Federation of the Desert partnered with Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai to screen “Ask Dr . Ruth .” The event was very well attended, and followed by a Q&A with Patti Kenner, Dr Ruth’s long-time friend .
Monthly Cafe Europa Gathering Held in Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai
STORY BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY PHOTOGRAPHS BY MAISIE LENTZNER
Café Europa is a monthly gathering inviting Holocaust survivors and second-generation Holocaust survivors to participate in social activities . It acknowledges the fact that survivors share similar memories and experiences . Even though lunch is served, the true nourishment is from the connections with others who have endured similar hardships
Inspired by a café in Stockholm, Sweden, where survivors would gather after the war hoping to find lost relatives and friends, Café Europa is now replicated in more than 100 venues around the world .
Locally, Café Europa is organized by the Jewish Family Service and sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the Desert . Programs are held at various locations
On February 2, 2025, Café Europa members and families were invited to a special private screening of the award-winning film “Call Me Dancer,” followed by a Q&A with the director, Leslie Shampaine, at Temple Sinai in Palm Desert
Prior to the screening, the guests enjoyed brunch . The Community Religious School students from Temple Sinai walked around the social hall, chatting with the survivors, discussing their Hebrew and Judaic knowledge, and performing Hebrew songs while engaging the survivors to follow the songs’ directions .
Temple Sinai’s Community Religious School was founded in 1976, and after 49 years . It is the longest operating Jewish religious school in the Coachella Valley Our school welcomes all children, regardless of their families’ temple affiliation .

All In: San Diego’s Call to Action for the Jewish Future
BY CARLY EZELL LOBENSTEIN
This is a defining moment for the Jewish people A convergence of challenges — rising antisemitism, Israel’s post-war trauma, and the need to deepen community connection — demands an unwavering, unified response That’s why this year, the Jewish Federation of San Diego is going All In .
All In: We foster meaningful Jewish connections — building vibrant, inclusive spaces for Jews of all backgrounds to engage proudly with their heritage and values
All In: We stand against hate With antisemitism surging, we’re acting with urgency in securing our local institutions, empowering our community with tools to stay safe, and advocating fiercely for Jewish safety
All In: We help rebuild Sha’ar HaNegev and all of Israel . In the wake of Oct 7, we’re supporting efforts to restore lives shattered by war — healing trauma, rebuilding infrastructure, and strengthening Israel’s social fabric for long-term resilience
Jewish Federation of San Diego is the backbone of Jewish life in our city, channeling the collective strength of our community into tangible impact With your partnership, we will meet this moment—ensuring a vibrant, caring, connected, and resilient Jewish future here and around the world

Jewish Family Service Keeps Seniors
Connected with “On The Go”
When Cheryl Abelowitz steps into the car with volunteer driver Mark James, she feels more than just safe — she feels cared for
“‘On the Go’ takes me everywhere, including doctor appointments,” said Cheryl, who has taken nearly 400 rides “It’s always a pleasure when Mark’s driving me . I feel very safe .” Cheryl is one of hundreds of older adults who rely on “On the Go,” a free transportation service run by Jewish Family Service . Designed for adults 60 and older, the program connects seniors in 47 San Diego zip codes with volunteer drivers who do more than just offer a ride—they offer friendship . It’s like Uber with a heart
For driver Betty Carroll, volunteering has created lasting connections . She’s built a close bond with Mark Passavanti, a rider who is visually impaired and travels with his companion dog, Luca . “Mark isn’t just a rider anymore,” she says “He’s been a friend for two years ”
With the senior population growing, so is the need for compassionate volunteers and community support
To become a volunteer driver, visit jfssd .org/GiveARide, email volunteer@jfssd org, or call 858-637-3050
To donate, visit jfssd .org/GiveOnTheGo or call 858-637-3300 Donations cover mileage reimbursement for volunteer drivers and other program expenses .

Kindness Initiative/Kindness G’MACH —
The Jewish Gift Closet
BY KEREN-DEE HAMUI
At Kindness Initiative, we ensure that no Jewish individual or family in San Diego faces hardship alone We provide customized, conciergestyle case management, financial assistance, job coaching, and access to essentials through our Jewish warehouse, kindnessG’MACH
Whether it’s preventing eviction, providing clothing for a new job, or making sure every child has a toothbrush, we help community members move from crisis to stability—and ultimately toward longterm independence
As the only Jewish nonprofit solely dedicated to supporting San Diego’s Jewish community, our impact is powered by donors and volunteers who help us serve hundreds of families each year. Yet many people don’t realize that Kindness Initiative and kindness G’MACH even exist — and take their gently used items to places like Goodwill instead We ask you to bring them to us . Your donations won’t just meet physical needs — you may never realize just how many lives your act of kindness will touch
You can also sponsor a family, dedicate a section of the G’MACH, or name part of our building We accept donations every Monday and Thursday from 9:30 a .m . to 3:30 p .m . at 9372 Cabot Drive . Volunteers are always welcome — whether in the warehouse or on our kindnessCARES committee .
Together, kindness changes everything — one act of kindness at a time If you have a calling to do a mitzvah, we need you .
