THE JEWISH 411

Welcome!

The Jewish 411, Southern California’s annual Jewish business directory, is your source for information about everything from kosher bakeries to synagogues and day schools. Covering Orange County, San Diego County, Palm Springs and surrounding desert areas, you’ll find color-coded sections to help you navigate to your region of choice. As usual, there is also a list of performance art venues in each region, and an advertiser’s index at the back of the book to help you flip quickly to the business of your choice. For stories and information about Jewish events, organizations and people all year round, subscribe to the San Diego Jewish Journal at sdjewishjournal.com, or Orange County JLife at ocjlife.com. We hope this booklet provides useful information throughout the year, and we look forward to hearing from you with questions, comments, and story ideas. SPOTLIGHT ON... Bubbe & Zayde’s Place BY BONNIE CURKIN

H

aving worked with and studied the elderly population for the past 30 years and having created a look into the future approach 20 years ago – one word that comes to mind is DECISIONS. Throughout our lives we are constantly making decisions. What school do I attend? What job do I accept? Do I marry this person? Where will we live? How do we raise our children? Is it time to downsize? Is it time to retire? Just when you think you can relax and take a breath, another decision awaits. A parent or other elderly family member needs help. Most often the adult child (many of whom are seniors themselves), still want the parent to de-

cide upon when and where to move. In many instances this is too much stress to place upon our parent. There comes a time when the decision making process must be ceded to the next generation. It is difficult enough making decisions and changes for ourselves, let alone another person. Especially one we love and want the best for, especially a parent. It is natural to want a parent to continue to tell us what to do. After all, they made the decisions for much of our lifetime. However, age, forgetfulness and illness changes all that. The tide has changed. In lieu of making a decision to change their lifestyle we sometimes leave that parent in a living situation no longer suitable. Their own

I envisioned a place where the elderly could help in the kitchen and in the garden, a place where they may help open mail, play with children, hold a dog, join in conversations and activities. I imagined a place our elderly could continue to be productive. Based on these parameters Bubbe & Zayde’s Place was created. Throughout life we must be proactive. There is also a time to be proactive for our parents as well. Be prepared for the next stage in their life and seek out places before you may need that help. The same way our parents once lovingly made decisions for us is hopefully the way we will help make decisions for them. “L’ Dor V’ Dor” “Generation to Generation” A

home, apartment, a large assisted living community, – all serve a wonderful need – but at a particular time in their life. We sometimes leave the elderly in a living environment too long so as not to rock the boat. We wait until something happens, and there is no choice but to make a new decision. Many families are filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and who will be the sibling to make the final decision. Different needs require different decisions. Twenty years ago I had a vision of a place where the elderly could thrive and live each day until their last – a place small enough to provide extra care and attention, yet large enough to walk the secure grounds with the help of caregivers – a place where children were present much of the time, where small dogs ran in and out, birds chirped their songs and rabbits ran. I envisioned walkways between homes with fruit trees residents could

T

his summer Orange County’s Merage Jewish Community Center will host the 2018 JCC Maccabi Games and the Alpert JCC in Long Beach will partner hosting the JCC ArtsFest. Held together August 5-10, 2018, the experience will be the largest annual Jewish youth event in the world. A powerful and transforming experience for Jewish teens, the JCC Maccabi 2018 experience will be dramatic in their scale and unique in their ability to integrate sports and arts with Jewish identity and values, while strengthening bonds to Jewish heritage, community and Israel. Dan Bernstein, Merage JCC President/ CEO is the first person to lead eight Maccabi Games: “Maccabi is life-changing for many, many Jewish teens. Connecting with so many

peers from throughout the world, puts Judaism and community into perspective. It is an experience kids do not forget.” Meskie Taylor, a two-time Maccabi Games athlete, shares, “The Maccabi Games were amazing. In addition to the fun, the experience built pride, confidence and Jewish identity. It bonded me to Jews from my team, from around the U.S. and from faraway places I’ve never even heard of.” Merage JCC expects 2,500 Jewish teenagers from all over United States and even teens from Canada, South America, Europe and Israel. The teams will join together in an array of sports, arts, Shabbat dinners and meals, Hang Time—informal fun such as Jewish trivia games and Israeli dance—JCC Cares service activities and evening social activities.

The impact on thousands of Jewish teens – locally, nationally, and globally is invaluable. The memories will be cherished, by the artists, athletes and coaches, as well as their families and friends, for years to come. The sheer numbers of attendees, highlighting

the extent and strength of the Jewish community, are eye opening. The games result in our teens forming a stronger connection to Jewish Peoplehood, laying an essential foundation for them to develop into future Jewish leaders. A

al Gadot, well established now as Wonder Woman, swept into Palm Springs for the 29th Annual Palm Springs Film Festival (PSIFF) Awards Gala on January 2nd for her Red Carpet reception – followed by being honored with the Rising Star Award by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman’s director, who stirred the audience with her words of praise for this Israeli actress who knows no bounds. Gal stands out and not just because she is 5 foot 10. She fit in perfectly with this year’s Festival from start to finish. Harold Matzner, Chairman of the Board of the PSIFF proudly announced to more than 2,400 dinner guests that this year’s Festival would screen 180 films from 77 countries with 433 screenings. One of the three largest film festivals in North America, this year’s Gal Gadot with Harold Matzner, the Chairman of the Board for the 29th Annual Palm Springs attendance was more than 130,000. mélange of “Ten Directors to Watch” as the Creative Impact Awards, which lauds director, writer and actor in kudos contention with its own honors.” Gadot clearly stole the show at this invitation-only event. Born in Petah Tikva, Israel in 1985, Gadot grew up to be Miss Israel (2004) followed by two years as a soldier with the Israel Defense Forces, specializing in combat training. The star truly wowed this year’s Festival audience. Mr. Matzner, Festival Chairman, said of this financially successful film, “Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman showed us a strong, capable, poised, compassionate character and her performance has been universally praised, resonating with audiences everywhere. She plays the immortal warrior so well and the themes are especially apt for today, empowering all types of people, men and women, young and

old, the world over.” Wonder Woman was recently named one of the ten best movies of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI). Financially, Gadot’s award-winning performance has resulted in the film generating in excess of $1.4 billion, making her the highest grossing actress of 2017. “Gadot’s dive into the Wonder Woman character’s origins and her heroic fight for peace during the war to end all wars rivets audiences to the story of a woman with courage to accept her true destiny and inspire change in all those around her” was how she was described being the recipient of the Rising Star Award. Gal is married to Yaron Varsano, a real estate developer, and they have two daughters. A 2018 | 45

KITCHEN PERI PERI

with Lianne Goldsmith www.kitchenperiperi.com

I grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, where I inherited my love of cooking from my mother, Vivi. I immigrated to America in 1989 with my mom’s handmade cookbook in hand and set about creating a family and enthusiastically feeding them and everyone else in the orbit of our home. In 2014, I started a small catering company called Kitchen Peri Peri, and have been fortunate to cook delicious meals for a growing clientele that includes Snapchat, Mayor Eric Garcetti and First Lady Amy Wakeland and the Los Angeles City Council. My mother Viv’s kitchen was gastronomy central - a culinary sanctuary where she created mouthwatering delectables inspired by diverse cultures. Here, she baked, braised and brought hearty conversations to all who passed through in search of a taste of what was to come. In my own kitchen I often find myself concocting recipes inspired by these childhood memories. It’s probably no surprise that many of mom’s unique meals remain favorites to this day; Huge butter beans braised for hours in thick fresh tomato sauce and herbs; rich marrow bone and beef soup; curried chutney fish balls to mention a few. As we move through winter, I’ve chosen to share the recipe for a Yemenite Meat soup, one of my Husband Alon’s favorites.

Lianne can be found at: www.kitchenperiperi.com www.facebook.com www.instagram.com

YEMENITE MEAT SOUP INGREDIENTS: 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 3-4 pounds organic beef shanks with marrow bones 1 large onion, peeled , diced 3 cloves garlic 5 large ripe tomatoes 3 tablespoons tomato paste 6 baby carrots 2 heaped tablespoons better than bouillon vegetable base. 3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters 6 cups boiling water

Palm Springs Art Museum The Prince Of Prints, Jordan D. Schnitzer’s Andy Warhol Collection Debuts In Palm Springs Photos by Pat Krause

ordan Schnitzer, a name well-known in Portland, Oregon, began collecting art under the guidance of his mother Arlene Schnitzer at the age of 14 and today is respected for his “sense of stewardship” in the specialized area of prints. Venues that have hosted exhibitions from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation span the globe, from the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass. to the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings,

Montana. The Schnitzer exhibition and lending program continues to expand and will touch down at the Palm Springs Art Museum March 3 and stay through May 28, 2018, spanning the museum’s main floor gallery. The exhibit consists of 250 pieces by Andy Warhol, including a selection of the artist’s most iconic works, such as Campbell Soup I and II (1968), Marilyn (1967) and Mao (1972), according to the Museum. Adding a layer of glamour to the exhibit is the

Andy Warhol’s exhibit March 3-May 28.

“Enter the World of Warhol,” not your typical Gala, a January event staged at the Palm Springs Convention Center, inviting guests to think 1960s, at least wardrobe-wise, from dressing as Andy to any lookalike or pop fashion fan portrayed in Warhol’s prints. The event, honoring Arlene Schnitzer and Jordan Schnitzer, represented a new direction in desert fundraising and entertainment. The inspiring range of cultural and social philanthropy exhibited by the Schnitzer Foundation is far reaching in the Coachella Valley where mother and son, Arlene and Jordan made the desert a second home. Working behind the scenes, the Schnitzers were two of seven Major Awards Gala Underwriters of the 29th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in January. Their commitment to desert philanthropy has had a truly positive impact on the arts. That reflects Jordan’s commitment; he explained this when he said, “For me waking up each day without art around me would be like waking up without

the sun.” When you live with art around you your mind and soul are filled with the beauty of life and the creativity of the human spirit.” Additionally, the Schnitzers’ deep commitment to Jewish philanthropy is equally exemplary in their hometown of Portland, Oregon, laying a blueprint for their cultural alliance to the desert. Their enthusiasm is a touchstone for Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family’s Foundation at The Palm Springs Art Museum is sweeping the desert along with workshops, artist demonstrations and related interactive elements designed to “immerse museum visitors in the world of Warhol.” Make it a part of your visit here. New Harmony Project at the Cygnet BY BRIE STIMSON

(L-R) Cashae Monya, Allison Spratt Pearce and Kylie Acuna in Cygnet’s “The Last Wife.”

T

he Cynget Theatre in Old Town will hold the world premiere of “The Wind and The Breeze” in May. Written by Nathan Allen Davis, a New York-based playwright, the musical, about a rapper who’s forgotten his dream, is the first in a program established to showcase new work. “It’s a story about African-American role models living outside of Chicago, pursuing their dreams and what happens to dreams deferred. The lead is a rapper. Now he’s kind of given up his dream so the younger generation coming up doesn’t quite understand why. But it’s a really beautiful character driven story,” associate artistic director Robert Lutfy told me over the phone. The play was chosen at the first annual Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission. “They’re plays that are pretty much done, maybe 80 percent done. Either they were a former commission from a bigger theater that

64 | THE JEWISH 411

passed on it and it’s been sitting in a drawer and the playwright says I really think that there’s something here, I just need a week of rehearsals and some time with a director to figure it out ... or they’re like a passion project,” Lufty explained. He said most of the time when theaters commission a piece they ask for something specific, but Cygnet’s program allows authors the opportunity to create something that’s important to them. “And there’s no real theater that gives playwrights the funds to do that,” he added. “We’re saying we want you to write what you’re passionate about and not be constraining. It’s been really successful for us and a good way for Cygnet to get to know playwrights and earn their trust and have new voices come through for our audience. Three new works have been chosen to be shown this year at the second annual Commission: “Dust,” “Alone Above a Raging Sea” and “When it Comes.” A

Small Spaces, Big Productions BY BRIE STIMSON

LtoR David Ellenstein, Amanda Sitton, Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper, & Louis Lotorto in “Laughter on The 23rd Floor.”

N

orth Coast Repertory Theater in Solana Beach started the January show of their 36th season with a trip around the world with “Around The World in 80 Days,” in which five actors portray 40 characters. Other shows coming up include, “This Random World,” which artistic director David Ellenstein calls an “intimate and whimsical look at people;” “How The Other Half Loves;” “The Father,” about a prideful aging man and what happens at the end of a person’s life; and “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum,” which is a full out musical. Ellenstein said it takes him around six months to pick the shows for each season, and he tries to choose a variety of everything. “I’m eclectic and I’m all over the map and [the audience] enjoy[s] that. We try to make it a surprise every time they come.” He also usually tries to find one new play that hasn’t been seen in San Diego before, a classic and one musical. Staging is also another factor Ellenstein has to take into account since North Coast Rep is a more intimate space than other theaters and some plays simply wouldn’t work. “Cer-

tainly with a smaller play I go ‘this is good’ and I don’t have to worry about those issues,” he told the Jewish Journal. “Sometimes I’ll read plays and I just say you know what? In order to really show this play you really need a twostory set because you want to see the action going on above and below at the same time, and I rule those plays out. This is not the right venue to illuminate the author’s work.” Sometimes, though, when he sees a play that’s ambitious regarding the set, he speaks to the set designer and production stage manager and figures out a creative way to make it work. Ellenstein also believes diversity in writers, directors and casting is important. “It’s important from the standpoint of our society that we grow in that direction,” he added. “It’s something that’s always been in my consciousness growing up in a liberal household in west Los Angeles. I think that it’s something that I don’t think about because I just do it automatically.” As far as this season, Ellenstein said he’s looking forward to everything. “Usually what I’m working on is my favorite,” he laughed. “They’re all intriguing to me and they’re all challenges.” A 2018 | 65

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Jewish BigPals: a Mentor, a Role Model, a Friend

Derek hanging out with his Little Pal.

W

hen Derek’s father disappeared from his life, he felt a huge void. At age 10, his mother became concerned that he did not have a male role model and signed him up for Jewish BigPals, a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego in which adults – age 25 and older – mentor children ages 6-16 from non-traditional or single-parent families. Big Pals help their Little Pals develop self-esteem, Jewish identity and lasting relationships that can forever change their perspective on the world – and make a

80 | THE JEWISH 411

big impact in their lives. For Derek, it was a transformative experience that nurtured his Jewish identity as well as an enduring interest in science and medicine: “My Big Pal was a med student and because of his guidance, I ended up majoring in biology with an emphasis in bio-chem.” Derek, now an adult and working in account management and sales for a chemical company, decided to pay it forward and volunteered to become a Big Pal. Derek has connected with his Little Pal –

THE JEWISH 411 an eight-year-old interested in martial arts, who Derek calls “a very good, super bright kid.” Their outings together have included munching on California Burritos (the Little Pal’s first!), boogie boarding and surfing, as well as visits to the USS Midway and the Natural History Museum. Childhood can be a time of many challenges. With more than 4,600 Jewish single-parent families in San Diego, many of the children from these families have been through a divorce, death, or abandonment – like Derek. “Studies show children with adult mentors are more confident, have higher self-esteem and better relationships,” said Susan Cohn, Jewish BigPals Coordinator. “We have seen how spending just a few hours a month with their Big Pals can have a positive impact on our Little Pals that lasts the rest of their lives.” Each Little Pal is matched with a Big Pal who has been carefully screened, trained and supervised by the professional staff at JFS.

While this program is all about helping young Jewish children become more confident and secure on their journey to adulthood, the experience also leaves a lasting effect on the Big Pals. “It’s incredibly worth it and very gratifying – to know and tangibly see that you’re having an impact on somebody who’s going through a tumultuous time,” said Derek. How Big Pals and Little Pals spend their time together is completely up to them. “Go for a walk. BBQ together. See a movie. Hang out at the beach. Shoot some hoops. Or just give some encouragement and advice. However you normally spend your time, chances are you’ll have even more fun with your Little Pal – and you’ll be making a big impact,” said Cohn. A To learn more about the program, sign a child up to be a Little Pal, or volunteer to become a Jewish BigPal, visit www.jfssd.org/bigpals or call 858-637-3056.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

75 Years of Seacrest Village BY JON SCHWARTZ

Seacrest in Encinitas.

S

eacrest Village Retirement Communities is a vibrant not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) senior housing and health care organization with communities in both Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo, California. Known for our caring and nurturing environments, Seacrest Village has been serving the evergrowing San Diego community in the Jewish tradition since 1944. Seacrest Village works with over 400 clients daily through an array of programs and services, embracing their changing needs every step of the way. Through comprehensive and progressive care options and delivery systems, we encourage and support a life of dignity and spirituality. The highest possible quality of care for our residents is our foremost priority. We are proud to announce that we are soon approaching our 75th year in business. Our history originated in 1944 when the San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged was developed as a small home caring for 10 Jewish seniors. Eleven years later, in 1955 the first residential care facility was built on 54th street. Throughout the next three plus decades the

54th Street home expanded in size. The needs of the community expanded to the point where in 1989, the San Diego Hebrew Homes moved its main campus up to Encinitas, California and became Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. Since the move, Seacrest Village has become a multi-level care community including: independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. Additionally, in 1996, Seacrest Village purchased a 56unit independent living building in Rancho Bernardo that is a vital part of the organization today. To address the desire for many to age-in-place, Seacrest Village launched a non-medical home care division: Seacrest at Home. Lastly, in 2016, Seacrest Village became licensed to operate an adult day center that benefits individuals with mild cognitive impairment and early stages of dementia. As we approach our 75th anniversary, we strive to live out our mission: providing services to seniors in a Jewish environment that promotes community, independence and innovation, for another 75 plus years.
