Each year the South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors elects up to ten people in the State’s Hall of Fame. Over 40 years ago a group of people in Ft. Pierre decided to honor the people of South Dakota to bring attention to those individuals who were making a statewide impact. Today, that tradition continues to honor, celebrate and recognize South Dakotans so that our youth and all generations make a pathway to their dreams for all in South Dakota to share. Please submit your nomination at sdexcellence.org to help Build a Culture of Excellence in South Dakota!

New Exhibits Open at the Hall Excellence in Health Care: Education and Medicine through the Ages South Dakota Health Care includes a number of trail blazers in their medical professions that citizens throughout our state were the beneficiaries. South Dakota has a long history of “making its way,” by inventing and/or collaborating with other experts so that we have one of the leading health care states in the country. This one-of- a-kind exhibit brings to life some of the pioneers that made health care of today, built upon their stories. Did you know that Lyle Schroeder worked in laundry to get his start as Sioux Valley’s (now Sanford) CEO, and Karl Wegner was a leader in establishing the University of South Dakota’s Medical School? Did you know that airplane flights were at one time the primary means of transportation for autopsies? Pathology education is a primary source of determining medical successes and John Barlow was the Educator of Pathology in South Dakota. Holistic Medicine has always been Rick Holm’s passion, long before yoga, meditation and health supplements. You can see him weekly on TV and radio. He lives what he teaches. Don’t miss the first of its kind, Excellence in Health Care: Education and Medicine through the Ages.

Inductee Dr. Rick Holm visits with inductee Duane Sander at the Exhibit Opening, Sept. 2017

Business & Trade through the Generations Joy Ranch, located in Watertown is a place where dreams happen. Inductee Joy Nelson built a place for all generations and families to spend time in the outdoors, particular those with special needs. It is a magical place in the beauty of South Dakota that makes being outdoors possible for everyone. Daktronics started in a garage with two professors from SDSU. Inductees Al Kurtenbach and Duane Sander feed their passion for inventions and South Dakota to make a place for engineering students in an international company of digital signboards lighting up stadiums and arenas across the globe.

Inductee Dave Geisler started out with his father over 50 years ago making Murdo the place to stop for all things auto. Pioneer Auto Museum is known across the U.S. for its unique exhibits coveted by auto and farm enthusiasts. The exhibit is a must see for the 1955 Pink Chevy that still brings an envy eye to many.

The Making & Meaning of Dignity Permanent Collection South Dakota Hall of Fame Education and Visitor Center Designated as the Permanent Collection for the Statute of Dignity The Making and Meaning of Dignity The statute Dignity stands 50 ft. tall on the bluff of the Missouri River in Chamberlain. During the 2017 Honors Ceremony the permanent exhibit for Dignity was opened at the Hall for telling the story of the making and the meaning of Dignity. Norm (Inductee 2010) and Eunabel McKie funded the statue and commissioned Artist, Dale Lamphere (Inductee 1987) to design and construct the statue. Dignity is an honoring of the Lakota and Dakota Native American cultures for unity of our conversations about our people and its landscapes.

Commemorative items pictured here are available for purchase at the Hall of Fame Giftshop in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Honoring a Legacy

Ilo Vanderboom remembered by his family

Steve & Julie Vanderboom’s donation of $125,000 to the South Dakota Hall of Fame Vision 2020 Endowment Campaign will build a lasting legacy of Steve’s father Ilo Vanderboom and his journey in building excellence for South Dakota.

Steve & Julie Vanderboom’s donation of $125,000 will provide support to the mission of the Hall in Building a Culture of Excellence. Steve and Julie, through their careers and community support demonstrate what this means. Steve founded Pace in 1978, and has provided over 39 years of experience in the analytical services industry specifically in the areas of environmental testing. The national industry employs more than 1,800 people in 50 locations. Julie has over 32 years of diverse nursing background, working in hospital, clinic and health plan settings in a variety of staff, manager and director roles. Both are actively engaged with their church, community and organizations. Their entrepreneur heritage is important to South Dakota and globally. Their generous donation will share inspiration, mentorship, and leadership by sharing Ilo’s story of excellence.

Ilo Vanderboom Ilo immigrated in 1921 at four years old from his mother’s Dutch heritage. Ilo was an entrepreneur and a lifelong supporter of Platte, the state of South Dakota, and his country. His story is one of service above self, and he has been a role model for countless young people. The family businesses over the years employed more than 1,000 people. Each of these individuals owes some part of their success to Ilo Vanderboom’s unselfish support. During his 60-plus years of service to Platte, Ilo was the mayor, led civic and church organizations, and most importantly mentored many youth who have started their own businesses. Ilo passed away in February, 2009. His energy, enthusiasm, and love of people and life are an inspiration to many and a part of South Dakota lives today and for the future.
