Building a Culture of Excellence theme

The primary constituency of the SD Hall of Fame is our inductees, their descendants and their related organizations. This is an influential group. We believe we can harness this potential for the purpose of fostering a culture of excellence in South Dakota. The SD Hall of Fame is a unique organization with the mission to influence culture statewide. Our inductees and their supporters demonstrate the value of excellence and have created a culture of excellence within their communities of influence. We are asking our supporters to join with us to embrace this mission of

excellence through stories of persistence, success as a means of learning from challenges and compassion to mentor others. Together we want to impact our state for innovation and civic conversations that can improve job opportunities, provide for healthier families and increase educational outcomes. All of this and more is possible as more individuals and organizations embrace a culture to pursue excellence. Hopefully, you will want to join with us for the potential of this opportunity and share the enthusiasm for pursuing a big dream.

“ ...embrace this mission of excellence through stories of

persistence, success as a means of learning from challenges and compassion to mentor others.” Greta Chapman, President/CEO

Inductee Achievement Updates Dwayne Beck, Ph.D. (2007, Pierre), and Bob Fanning presented an agronomy session at the popular farmer-focused Sorghum U, which helps producers successfully produce sorghum. Beck’s research responsibilities at Dakota Lakes Research Farm emphasize developing no-till systems for irrigated and dryland areas in central South Dakota. Beck was presented with the American Agriculture Editors’ Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2008.

Spokesperson Johnny Brockelsby has announced that Reptile Gardens is now listed in the 2004 edition of the Guinness World Records book as the world’s largest collection of reptiles. Currently home to more than 200 species of reptiles from around the world, founder Earl Brockelsby (2000, Rapid City) started Reptile Gardens with a sack of rattlesnakes he'd caught himself. Its collections include species from around the world including crocodiles and alligators, lizards, snakes, turtles and tortoises. Other collections include amphibians, insects, arachnids, birds and plants from across the globe. Earl's son, Johhny Brockelsby, is spokesperson for Reptile Gardens, and worked hard to get this recognition. Known worldwide for its collections and expertise, the popular tourist spot is often entrusted with the care of rare species from around the world. Internationally recognized opera star Johanna Meier (2006, Spearfish) has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Opera Association in New York City, recognizing Meier's singing career of more than 37 years including leading roles in performances in Europe, North and South America, Israel and Japan, and 15 seasons with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She was also recognized for her educational program for young opera singers, the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute on the Black Hills State University campus which she started in 1997 to further the musical education of aspiring opera singers. The daughter of Clare and Josef Meier, founders of the Black Hills Passion Play, Meier and her late husband, Guido Della Vecchia, directed the famed production from 1991 to 2008, until the play closed in 2008 after a 70-year run. Carmen Meyer, wife of the late Don Meyer (2012, Wayne, NE) will lead fundraising efforts for a proposed new $11 million Avera St. Luke's cancer facility in Aberdeen. The new facility will bear their names. The cause is personal. Mr. Meyer was diagnosed with cancer in his liver and intestines, receiving treatment from Dr. Richard Conklin in Aberdeen. His experience with other cancer patients created his desire to expand cancer services in Aberdeen so that families would not have to travel for treatment. "It is just a great project," said Don Meyer. "Do what you can do. If you can't help financially, pray for the successful completion of the project." Don Meyer is nationally known as a coach, retiring as the all-time winningest coach in NCAA men's basketball history with 923 wins. After coaching at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., for 24 seasons, he coached at Northern State University for 11 seasons (1999-2010). ESPN analyst Buster Olney wrote about his life in How Lucky You Can Be: The Story of Coach Don Meyer. The South Dakota State Fair's new exhibit hall will be named after Earl Nordby (1997, Huron), to honor his $1 million kick-off gift to their $4 million capital campaign. The exhibit hall provides more than 35,000 square feet of exhibit space, multiple classrooms, kitchen for food competitions, yearround concessions and a performance stage. "The Nordby Exhibit Hall for 4-H, Youth and Community will be a major asset to the State Fairgrounds,” said Jerome Hertel, SD State Fair director. “4-H events are a cornerstone of the State Fair and this facility will propel 4-H into the future.” The Nordby family has a long history of community support, giving many educational, recreational and performing arts facilities in South Dakota. Mr. Nordby has worked with the South Dakota Community Foundation to support the South Dakota Hall of Fame in Chamberlain, among other projects.

Acts of Excellence: Honoring Excellence Everyday AREAS WHERE YOU CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

HONORS CEREMONY Annual Honors Ceremony Tribute to Honor Inductees

Every day throughout South Dakota people are doing Acts of Excellence that change our lives and state to benefit many. It is that everyday activity the SD Hall of Fame wants to recognize, honor and contribute to building a culture of excellence in South Dakota. The Hall of Fame will invite nominations of individuals, groups and organizations to receive the designation as a Champion for Excellence. The recognition of this achievement will include presentation of a certificate, recognition online and in the media, and a directory of Acts for influence and research. Look for a launch date coming soon on our website! An online nomination was recently finalized and will be available for public access. In addition to recognition for Acts of Excellence, an online directory will provide a record and access to everyday excellence in South Dakota. We are excited to offer this programming and look for a launch date soon!

The Barger Memorial Foundation in Chamberlain, SD, approved a $10,000 grant that will provide global access to inductee achievements. The digitization of the inductee stories will provide resources for programming at a local, state and global level. Dr. Tom Stone, Richard Ekstrum, Dr. Don Messer, Bart and Pat Blum are examples of inductees in the Chamberlain area whose stories of excellence are examples for the grant. Forty years ago Mike Sougstad, executive director for the organization, stated, “We anticipate providing some of the best research materials in the upper Missouri region.”
