Process for nominations

Who may nominate an individual?

Complete and submit the online application — Only electronic submission of nominations will be accepted.

Begin at our website, sdhalloffame.org, and click on the Nominations button.

Anyone may nominate an individual, living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Self-nomination is not permitted, and those currently serving on the South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors or it's staff are not permitted to nominate individuals.

Complete the application fully — Carefully review the required information, and complete the application fully to present the best case for the candidate’s nomination.

Please review the application carefully, as incomplete applications cannot be reviewed.

Submit on time — Online applications must be submitted by midnight MST on February 1. Please leave adequate time as late applications cannot be reviewed.

Selection and notification — The South Dakota Hall of Fame Board Members will review all timely and complete nominations. Each year, up to ten individuals whose nominating application best presents the achievement of excellence will be selected. The selection criteria for excellence is based on the information provided within the nomination for an individual’s statewide contributions, outstanding leadership, achievement in their chosen category, their skill development, and growth.

Notification — Individuals selected for induction will be notified in writing. Honorees will also be announced in public press releases and on the Hall’s website.

Recognition — Inductees receive recognition at the annual Honors Ceremony held each September, on the Hall’s website and in various publications.

Who may be nominated Nominees must have resided in South Dakota during their lifetime. The nominee must exemplify the meaning of excellence, demonstrating qualifications, attributes, and achievements in the selected category that are exemplary and distinguished.

Eligible fields of accomplishment To showcase South Dakota’s finest, we accept nominations in six broad categories to cover any area of accomplishment. The following are general descriptions of each category: Agriculture — Includes all aspects of agriculture Arts and Entertainment — Encompasses actors and actresses, film, photography, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, communications including radio and television, etc.

General — Includes fields such as education, military, politics, religion Historical — Includes those who contribute to the fabric and culture of South Dakota Professional — Includes professionals such as business leaders, scientists, inventors, technology computer science experts, medical professionals and pioneers, researchers, philanthropists, legal experts, and others Sports — Includes athletes, coaches, and others in the field of athletics.

The South Dakota Hall of Fame hosts the Annual Honors Ceremony, recognizing up to 10 individuals who contribute to to a culture of excellence in South Dakota.

John Barlow

Medical Advancement Rapid City, SD

John F. Barlow was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey in 1933 and attended Montclair Academy, where he was fortunate to encounter excellent teachers who instilled in him the love of learning.

At Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, John endured a challenging pre-med experience and discovered that he much preferred rural life to an urban environment.

He completed two years of medical education at Dartmouth's Medical School, which was a two-year institution at the time. His Professor of Pathology and Microbiology, Philip Nice, sparked his lifelong interest in these two fascinating fields.

While attending Dartmouth, John met a Medical Technology student from New Hampshire named Anne Woodbury, who later became his wife. In spite of all the many wonderful things Barlow has experienced, he notes that marrying Anne was the best thing that ever happened to him, and gives Anne credit as the person responsible for his many successes and achievements.

After completing the two years of Medical School at Dartmouth, John transferred to Harvard Medical School for the remaining two years. He then entered a Pathology Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA. The outstanding example set by Staff Pathologist Dr. Robert Scully instilled a love for the field of Laboratory Medicine which has continued throughout Barlow’s life.

During these years at MGH, John met Dr. Karl Wegner, a fellow member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame, and a Grandson of Peter Norbeck. Karl recruited John to join his practice in Sioux Falls, teach Laboratory Medicine at the Medical School, and Pathology residents and Medical Technologists at Sioux Valley Hospital.

Medicine, and then Dean at South Dakota Medical School. John will always be grateful to Karl for bringing him to South Dakota. Under his leadership, the two-year Medical School was converted to a four-year degree granting institution. During this time, John was also able to practice Laboratory Medicine as Director of the Laboratory at Sioux Valley Hospital and the Laboratory of Clinical Medicine.

Laboratory Medicine is an ancillary field of medicine not noticed by most patients, but very important in quality care. Barlow endeavored to instill this in his students, and encouraged them to become interested in this fascinating and ever-changing field.

In 1985, John’s family moved to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, where he continued to teach and practice. They have been extremely happy to have lived in this beautiful part of the state, where Anne now has mountains and trees that remind her of New Hampshire.

Although John and Anne are from the East Coast, they now love South Dakota and have considered it their home for over 50 years. The Barlows have lived on both sides of the state, and John has worked at both Sioux Valley and Rapid City Regional Hospitals. He has served on many boards and committees, both East and West, and served as Chief of Staff in both places. John always found it challenging, but rewarding to keep the Medical Staff and the Administration on the same page.

Scientist, scholar, & teacher changing the face of medicine in South Dakota

John has always felt it’s important to take part in professional boards and organizations in your community. His parents taught him the value of giving back to your community. He has enjoyed the support of his wife and two daughters, Deborah and Karen, in these efforts. Anne and John have always been interested in theater, and have supported performing arts not as active participants, but as off-stage support. They’ve enjoyed working with both the Black Hills Community Theater and the Black Hills Playhouse. Ten years ago, they were honored with the Governor’s Award for the Arts by individuals. They continue to be advocates for importance of the environment, and have been active with the Black Hills Nature Conservancy.

John feels that inductees do not make it to the Hall of Fame without tremendous support from others. He appreciates Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Milton Mutch, Sioux Valley Hospital Administrator Jon Soderholm, Black Hills Regional Hospital CEO Dr. Charles Hart, and fellow arts advocate Dr. Ron Reed for nominating him to the Hall of Fame.

Bob Burns

Education Brookings, SD

Robert (Bob) Burns was born in Flandreau in 1942, the youngest of six children of the late Joseph and Marie Burns. Bob credits his sister Mary with protecting him during his early bratty years, when his older brothers had good cause to cage him.

His high school leadership roles and academic success paid dividends in the form of a four-year Briggs Scholarship awarded to him by SDSU in 1960. Prior to receiving the SDSU scholarship, Bob hoped to study accounting, but the financing was uncertain. Although everyone encouraged him to earn a college degree, the cost of higher education was beyond the means of his family. The gift of low-cost public higher education and a generous scholarship made college enrollment possible.

Bob gravitated to student leadership roles and enjoyed academic success while attending SDSU. He entered college with the goal of becoming an engineer, but lacked the aptitude and interest. He was soon convinced that designing bridges or advancing the computer age was not his future. Fortunately, he found an American Government class taught by Professor JP Hendrickson.

He became a student of political science, where his aptitude and interests were better suited. Bob graduated from SDSU in 1964 with a BS in Political Science, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Army through ROTC. 1964 also marked his marriage to Donna Bozied, who he was very fortunate to meet early in his senior year.

Bob’s ambition as an SDSU undergraduate would ultimately lead to his MPA and work as a Federal civil servant. He was, in fact, headed to Syracuse University with a scholarship to earn this degree when his direction shifted with a University of Missouri-Columbia full three-year National Defense Fellowship in their Political Science Doctoral Program.

Bob subsequently earned his MA in 1966, and a Political Science PhD in 1973 from the University of MissouriColumbia with the financial support of his Fellowship and Donna’s earned salary. Their time in Missouri was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Cari. Bob’s fourth year of graduate study included his first experience as a classroom instructor, and the seed was planted.

Following four years of graduate study, Bob reported for active duty at Ft. Benning, GA as an officer in the US Army. Bob’s two-year active duty time from 1968-1970 included one year as an Army Captain in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster while serving in Vietnam. Donna gave birth to their second child, Tim, while Bob was in Vietnam. She still laughs about the stares she and her elderly father received while at the

Brookings Hospital to greet the baby that night in 1970.

While serving in Vietnam, Bob was invited by his mentor Professor Hendrickson to join the political science faculty of SDSU for a one-year appointment.

This was formalized when Bob signed a loyalty oath from his station in Vietnam. The appointment turned into a 38-year career thanks to circumstances and the endorsement of students, colleagues, and superiors.

His second year of teaching at SDSU was highlighted with the birth of their third child, Jonathan. During his tenure at SDSU, he received many teaching awards including being named College of Arts and Sciences “Teacher of the Year” seven different years, receiving the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching (1989), honored as Distinguished Professor of Political Science in 1994 by the SD Board of Regents, and being named the 1995 South Dakota Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

He served as department head for the Departments of Political Science and Philosophy and Religion for nearly 20 years. He served as Acting Director of the USD Farber Center in 1998 while on leave from SDSU. During the last ten years of his tenure at SDSU, he served first as Director and later as the first Dean of the SDSU Honors College while continuing his teaching and department head duties. He also assumed many leadership roles on several key campus organizations during his SDSU tenure. Early in his career, his nine-month teaching contract allowed him to conduct policy research for Governors Kneip, Wollman, and Janklow, also serving as a Humanist-in-Residence for the South Dakota Committee on Humanities three separate summers.

Upon his retirement in June, 2008, the SD Board of Regents honored him with the titles Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Dean Emeritus of the SDSU Honors College. He was also honored as a SDSU

Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science

Distinguished Alumnus for Service to Education by the SDSU Alumni Association in 2008. He continues to be a well-known print and broadcast media commentator on South Dakota and national government, politics, and legal issues. Bob has also received recognition for community service. He served on the National Commission on the Cost of Higher Education (19971998), and served as a State Commissioner on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

His belief that democracy requires active citizen engagement and a strong civil society has prompted him to serve on, and sometimes lead multiple state and local civic and government boards, commissions, task forces, and councils during his professional life. His service mentality continues in retirement, evidenced by his chairing the Budget and Policy Institute and the SD World Affairs Council, in addition to teaching OLLI courses in Sioux Falls and Brookings.

Bob and Donna’s three adult children, spouses, and 11 grandchildren are first in their hearts. The couple enjoys domestic and international travel, walking, reading, musical performances, grandchildren’s events, University events and sharing time with family and friends.

Bob recognizes that his direction in life was set by both foreseen and unforeseen circumstances, deliberate choices and default choices, good and bad fortune, positive encouragement from many individuals, and a strong desire to stay in South Dakota. Bob is ambitious and confident. More than once, the failure of one ambition resulted in the creation of a new path for professional and personal growth.

Giving to the Hall of Fame Why do our donors support the SD Hall of Fame financially?

Donors support a culture of excellence in South Dakota by inspiring people to connect to, learn from, and celebrate the achievements of inductees. To learn from them and build the future, funding enables us to: •

Continue our traditional purpose of selecting and honoring new inductees each year. The Annual Honors Ceremony raises enough money to cover the cost of the event, but it does not cover other annual expenses.

• Support and expand our programs • Legends & Learning • Legacy of Achievements • Acts of Excellence • Support the centrally-located museum in Chamberlain. The museum serves as a home for inductees, their rotating exhibits and archives, and connects us all at the annual honors weekend.

Additional Budget Information The annual budget for the Hall’s programs is approximately $375,000, including $25,000 for growth in these programs.

The South Dakota Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 corporation, able to accept taxdeductible and tax-advantaged donations.

We have no debt, and continue to continue to secure our financial future through: • An endowment campaign with targeted earnings that will cover at least half of annual costs. The plan includes growing the endowment fund through planned giving.

• Annual Board of Directors and Staff contributions.

• Ongoing relationships with living inductees, who financially support and participate in the mission and programming.

Taking these steps will insure that our annual appeals serve broad-based and long-term goals.

Until these goals are reached, we need and appreciate your continued substantial support.

Programming is funded through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, an annual fundraising campaign with the Honors Ceremony, foundation grants averaging $10,000, and an endowment with the South Dakota Community Foundation generating approximately $5,000 of interest dividend annually. Planned giving and bequests will be an important piece of solid endowment funding.

Christine Hamilton

Agriculture Kimball, SD

Christine Hamilton grew up as an only child in Kimball, South Dakota, garnering curiosity and work ethic like only a kid growing up in farming and ranching can. Her family settled the ground in the 1880s and dreamed across generations to see it grow. The adventure that it can be, rural life also brought it’s obstacles.

Her Great-Uncle was killed by cattle rustlers on his homestead near Iona, and her Grandmother, Christine fought through that night to keep her own life.

The family persevered, becoming successful merchants and landowners.

Christine’s mother and father worked hard throughout their lives to grow their businesses. She took great pride in their work, and felt responsible for her heritage that spans many generations. Her roots run deep.

One strong value her mother held was a good education.

She also believed that Christine should enjoy broad horizons, and never felt she couldn’t accomplish something. Helen, one of South Dakota’s first women attorneys, provided Christine with many lessons including piano, accordion, golf, swimming, skiing, ballet, and French. Helen also instilled her love of travel in Christine. Together they explored many far-flung places.

Christine’s father, Dewey, was a self-made cattleman who understood the business from the ground up, and loved the sight of cattle grazing on rangeland. He also enjoyed listening to opera. He gave Christine her sense of place and deep connection to the prairie landscape he loved.

Christine’s life journey has taken her many places, but she ultimately returned to South Dakota and built a life that she loves. She is the owner and managing partner of Christiansen Land and Cattle, Ltd. The fourth-generation farm and ranch business includes several thousand

acres of farm and ranch land dispersed throughout South-central South Dakota both East and West of the Missouri River.

The company is consistently at the forefront of innovation, embracing new technologies and participating in developing opportunities such as a wholesale meat business in Las Vegas and a livestock biotech venture in Sioux Falls. Christine knows that none of this would be possible without like-minded people who share her passion for growth in leadership development activities, as well as growing cattle, crops, and businesses.

At Christiansen Land and Cattle, she led the development of a customized sustainability management plan that is regularly evaluated and adjusted. The philosophy at the heart of their sustainability goals is striving for continuous improvement. The farm has been involved in conservation programs, and is always looking for ways to balance yields with inputs by using practices such as rotational grazing, variable rate technologies, and taking measures to improve soil health.

Christine’s passion for agriculture and vitality in rural South Dakota doesn’t end at Christiansen Land and Cattle’s fence lines. In 2000, she and her family formed the Matson Halverson Christiansen Hamilton Foundation (MHCH), a not-for-profit foundation established to promote South Dakota and its future in the changing global economy.

Given the reality of declining rural populations, MHCH believes that rural communities with educated citizens are in a better position to create job opportunities, generate income, and attract families, business, industry and retirees.

The programs they support provide opportunities for all ages, from post-secondary educational opportunities to increase earning capacities to the opportunity for intellectual pursuits in lifelong learning. By providing these opportunities, they hope to also enhance the vitality of these communities for future generations.

By creating new adventures and experiences, Christine and her family help provide rural residents an opportunity to grow and have more fun in life. Christine believes that following curiosity leads to a well-rounded life. Her impact is widely felt as her interests and expertise span several industries including banking, agriculture, and biotech.

Advocate for excellence in agriculture & rural development

Christine is the founder of Dakota Packing, Inc., a company based in Las Vegas that provides center-ofthe-plate protein products to both Nevada customers and national accounts. She was involved in founding two South Dakota-based venture capital organizations, and currently serves on the Board of SAB Biotherapeutics, Inc., a South Dakota-based biotech company that develops polyclonal antibodies to treat human diseases.

She became involved in the South Dakota State University Foundation governing board to support agriculture education, and was appointed to the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission by former Governor Bill Janklow. She currently serves on the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of the Ninth District and chairs the Audit Committee. Christine serves on the Discovery District Board—a USD research park in Sioux Falls, and the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund Board, along with supporting many cultural and civic organizations and activities.

In the past, she’s served on the boards of directors of a number of entities, including Dakota Resources, Inc., South Dakota Biotech Association, and the South Dakota Symphony. Ms. Hamilton also previously served as a director of the HF Financial Corporation and Home Federal Bank based in Sioux Falls.

Christine has a degree in Philosophy from Smith College and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from the University of Arizona. She and her husband Dr. Eddie Hamilton live on their ranch near Chamberlain, SD, and in downtown Sioux Falls. They also travel frequently, and always enjoy time with four step-daughters who live in Houston, Texas, and seven grandchildren.

History An organization to honor South Dakota pioneers and outstanding leaders was established in 1974. Two years later, it was named the Cowboy and Western Heritage Hall of Fame, but in 1986 it was renamed the South Dakota Hall of Fame. In 1996, the South Dakota Legislature designated the South Dakota Hall of Fame as the State’s official Hall of Fame.

The original Hall of Fame was an overcrowded log cabin in Fort Pierre. The organization later moved to a small office in downtown Chamberlain. On June 3, 2000, a 25-year dream was realized with the Grand Opening of the new 10,000-square-foot building in Chamberlain.

Funding The Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 corporation, set up to accept tax-deductible and tax-advantaged donations. Programming and operations are funded through the generosity of steadfast annual individual and corporate donors, annual fundraising campaign donors, foundation grants, event sponsorships, and planned giving.

Rick Holm

Medical Brookings, SD

Richard Powell Holm was raised in DeSmet, South Dakota. He attended the University of South Dakota, where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree and two years of medical education. In 1981, he returned from final medical training in Atlanta, GA to establish his life in Brookings.

His Father Earl returned from WWII to his wife Jody. In DeSmet, Rick’s father worked for IDS while Jody worked at home, then later at the DeSmet News and DeSmet Farm Mutual Insurance. They raised two children, Susan and Rick, but lost Susan in a tragic motor vehicle crash in 1964. Rick has since embraced his two cousins and their families, considering them as close as brothers.

Grounded in the work ethic his parents displayed, Rick grew through their firm discipline and unconditional love. The loss of his sister has stayed with him throughout his life, reinforcing the value and importance of savoring each moment while understanding the fragility of life. He loves to share memories of his family, his DeSmet football team, the High School Band experience, the Debate team, and his role in the High School play Oklahoma. He often shares beloved memories of cruising Main in “the Bomb”, Teen Town, his rock and roll band Lov’n Blu, the dear friends from his great home town, and his perfect experience at Boomer High School.

Rick has lived his life around the practice of internal medicine, working as a hospitalist at Brookings Health System, and in Outpatient Medicine at Avera Medical Group of Brookings. He has concentrated on care of the elderly, since this is the time when people are most often sick and experiencing end of life issues. He has been the Medical Director of the local Hospice since it’s inception, and Directs the Hopeful Spirit Chorale, a mixed chorus visiting nursing homes, hospital beds, and homes of those who could use a little hopeful spirit. Dr.

Holm’s proposed book is titled Boomer Burden: How to Care for Your Elderly Parent. He’s worked with Doctors Bonny Specker and Teresa Binkly of SDSU on a research project to determine whether strength and diet protects elderly and obese patients from falling, failing, and other problems as they age.

Dr. Holm is forever indebted to his teachers, educator physicians, and the state of South Dakota for educating him from the beginning of his stellar career. He has always felt that his education was an enormous gift for a small-town boy. He believes his ethical responsibility is to return this gift by passing on great education to others.

Rick enjoyed full-time faculty for three years at Emory in Atlanta, and his favorite role has been educating residents, medical students, PA and NP students, and pre-med students while practicing medicine in South Dakota. He was Director of two hours per week of continuing medical education from 1983 through 2013.

He’s also served as Full Clinical Professor of Medicine at the USD Sanford School of Medicine. He has given countless lectures on the topic of providing health care at conferences through the years.

Dr. Holm has been a contributor in four published medical text books, and has had numerous articles published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and The Pharos, an Honor Medical Society ethics and literary journal. In addition, he is a regular contributor to the South Dakota Journal of Medicine. In 2008, Holm authored the book The Picture of Health, A View from the Prairie, through South Dakota Agriculture Heritage Museum Publisher, with illustration by Dr. Judith Peterson.

Although teaching medical professionals about clinical medicine has been important to Rick, his greatest impact has been teaching the general public about health. He got his start as a guest on local AM radio station KBRK with a weekly call-in talk show more than 25 years ago.

He is now the host and medical editor of On Call with the Prairie Doc. This prime-time, one-hour show has aired on South Dakota Public Television every week since 2001, for over 10,000 viewers. Rick and his volunteer physician guests address topics of interest such as stroke and heart attack, high blood pressure and kidney failure, depression and suicide, the over-use of antibiotics and narcotics, genetics and transplants, colon cancer, breast, bone marrow, prostate, and more. His public education efforts are not only aired via radio and television, but on the internet, social media, and weekly newspapers.

In spite of this broad coverage, he’s continually looking for opportunities to expand outside the current service region. With so much medical misinformation making the rounds, Rick feels it’s imperative that people hear more honest science, and less marketing malarkey.

South Dakota’s voice of healthcare

He has served as Chief of Staff at his local hospital, President of the South Dakota State Medical Association, and Governor of the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Physicians. He has also earned designation as Master of the ACP. Rick married Joanie Smith, a Registered Nurse and Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from Jacksonville, Florida. He fell in love not only with Joanie, but also with her family. Together they guided her Mom and Dad, as well as his own parents, through the end of life process.

Joanie’s two sisters and brother remain very close, although they live far away on the East Coast.

Joanie and Rick have raised four amazing, creative, and caring children. Eric lives in New York, NY, and is a Theater Director. Carter enjoys his career at a Nursing Home in Brookings. Preston is a musician in New Orleans, and Julia is a bank employee and part-time SDSU student in Brookings. Rick’s best parenting memory was reading aloud every night to the kids, and setting an example of how to treat one’s spouse and parents.

Rick is grateful for the nomination by life-long friend and fellow South Dakotan Dave Hyink. He is honored and humbled by his induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

The South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors encourages all forms of achievement, and we champion a culture of excellence in several ways. Our annual Honors Ceremony inducts a select group of new Champions for Excellence each year. Our Legacy of Achievements program tells the continuing stories of our inductees.

The personal stories of over 700 inductees are available online and in the museum. Special exhibits focus on areas of achievement such as Agriculture, Business, Native Americans, Education, Political Leaders and Women. Their stories can inspire, educate, and build local connections in our fast-paced, global world. Our Legends & Learning program offers teachers a South Dakota history curriculum using online, interactive tools for storytelling and learning. Our Acts of Excellence program recognizes individual deeds and actions that demonstrate excellence throughout the state.

Nominations are open to the public at our website, sdexcellence.org, with a deadline of February 1 each year.

The Hall’s Board reviews all nominations in a thorough and serious competitive process. The selections are made by secret ballot. Nominations are considered for three years.

Marcus King

Business Leader Platte, SD

Marcus King was born September 10, 1942 in Platte, SD. He was the third of eleven children born to Lester and Anna (Majerus) King. During his time at Platte Public High School, starting in 1961, he went to work for a local grocery store.

Little did he know this would be the start of his long and prosperous life’s work.

Marc had planned to join the Army in 1963. When his father was killed in an accident, he became the head of household with his mother, helping to raise the family.

He joined the Army National Guard while continuing his steady work at the grocery store. In 1967, Marc married Dianne De Haan, and was promoted to a management position at the local grocery store. Their family grew, welcoming baby Kristine in 1968, and Marshall in 1972. Their family has since grown to include three granddaughters with Kristine, plus two grandsons and one granddaughter with their son Marshall.

In 1973, the Vander Boom family, Dianne’s parents, and the De Haan family encouraged them to step out on their own and build their own grocery store. Ilo Vander Boom, owner of Boom’s Drive-In, had given them the land on which to build. They opened a new laundromat with Ilo and Eudora as well, to attract more customers to the area. They lived on Dianne’s salary from her work at the Platte Hospital, and did not draw a salary out of the fledgling grocery store for the first three years.

Within five years, Marc’s Market was doing well enough to allow the opening of a second store in Canton, South Dakota. They promoted a nineteen-year-old recent graduate from Platte, who had worked with them since he was in the sixth grade. This particular store had failed several times, and the new manager’s youth and inexperience made the local Canton banker nervous.

Marc reassured the bank that previous failures were

because of a lack of local involvement in the community.

The bank was convinced, and the Canton Food Center proved very successful.

Based on their success, Marc understood the formula for success in the grocery business and continued expanding.

He opened numerous stores, naming them to identify as local businesses. They also implemented policies of strong community support. The chain of stores included Wagner Food Center in 1982, Parkston Food Center in 1986, Winner Food Center in 1989, Freeman Shopping Center in 1991, and Mobridge Food Center 1992.

At one point, Marc was running seven stores in seven different towns across South Dakota. An expanded store was built in 1994 in Platte, turning the existing business into a successful farm supply center to support the City of Platte.

Marc worked to create future managers from young people he employed. Workers were grateful for these opportunities, and in turn have created the same type of opportunity for others. All of Marc and Dianne’s stores have been sold to the young managers who got their start as young trainees.

Marc and Dianne both believe that one of God’s greatest gifts is the ability to give back what they have been blessed with. Platte has been the primary beneficiary of their philanthropic activities covering everything from remodeling historic buildings to pushing for new improvements in the town. Marc and Dianne strive to lead and inspire others to invest in their community through their own example.

As members of the First Reformed Church, Marc and Dianne served terms as deacons and elders. They were active in building a new church and paving a new parking lot. They purchased and remodeled an old motel, which they then sold to another local couple.

They tore down several old houses to build accessible condominiums for the elderly. When the Platte livestock auction farm burned down, they invested in rebuilding the facility, and personally helped with re-construction of the holding pens.

In the 1970s, the Platte theater on Main Street closed. In 2003, they invested around $250,000 of their own money and led the 20,000 volunteer hours to restore the theater, then donated the theater to the City of Platte. This state of the art movie theater and live performance venue serves over 16,000 attendees annually. This has been a unique addition to the social and arts scene for the Platte community, providing a much-needed venue for school and community meetings as well.

Marcus served as co-chair of a fundraising effort for the local hospital. He and Dianne made a large contribution, then worked to secure other contributions. They met and surpassed their aggressive goal of $2 million to construct a new hospital addition in Platte.

Grocery entrepreneur & champion of rural South Dakota

In September of 2015, Marc retired as Chairman of the Board of Affiliated Foods Midwest of Norfolk, NE, Elwood, KS, and Wisconsin. He served on the board for 29 years, 19 of these as president.

Marc has been recognized in many ways. He was named South Dakota Retailer of the Year in 1989, awarded the Affiliated Foods Outstanding Award for helping young people get their start in business, and the Affiliated Award went to Marc and Dianne for Community Involvement. Marc and Dianne received the Pride in Platte Award from the Chamber of Commerce in Platte and were featured twice in the South Dakota Magazine.

Despite the routine demands of family, church, and a growing business, Marc and Dianne have always found time to support young people in business, giving back to their home town and church. The community will continue to benefit from the efforts of Marc and Dianne, as they plan to live out their golden years in the town they love; Platte, South Dakota.

JoEllen Koerner

Medical Advancement Sioux Falls, SD

JoEllen Koerner has enjoyed a lifelong nursing career in diverse settings from a rural hospital in South Dakota to a ‘Primary Care Clinic in the Cloud’ reaching from Africa and Switzerland to the Great Plains Reservations.

A third-generation descendant of Mennonites migrating from Russia to homestead in the Dakota Plains, her family survived their first winter only with the support of the Lakota Sioux Nation. The respect and friendship between their cultures spans generations, bringing understanding to her world view, and meaning to her work.

Born in 1946 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, JoEllen grew up in the small town of Freeman, where she spoke only German until learning English in Grade School. At age 5, she cared for a cat in the home of a 93-year-old neighbor. As JoEllen fed the cat and asked questions, the quiet elderly woman would shift to an animated and storyteller. Cloudy eyes would sharpen, and delight would fill her face. JoEllen realized that a caring presence quickens another’s life force; sparking the primary source of healing.

JoEllen attended the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing, where she quickly discovered that tapping into curiosity, wonder, and creativity was the key to an exciting professional career. She never applied for a job, but instead was always open to what was in front of her.

She took risks, knowing that wise mentors would show the way.

Health care reflects new discoveries in the social and scientific aspects of society. The USD School of Medicine appointed JoEllen to help establish telemetry-based cardiac care in South Dakota. After extensive training, 20 monitored cardiac beds were opened at Sioux Valley Hospital. Next came trained coronary care teams rural

hospitals throughout the state. Twenty years later, one of those very units saved her father’s life.

JoEllen returned to the farm to raise twins with her husband, Dennis while providing primary care in a rural medical clinic. Turning her attention to education, she served as Nursing Chair at Freeman Jr. College, and then Executive Secretary to the South Dakota Board of Nursing. She helped pass legislation to provide licensure for Advanced Practice Nurses at a time of physician shortages and an aging population. The presence of APN providers enhanced primary care access throughout the state.

JoEllen returned to Sioux Valley Hospital as Patient Services Vice President, designing and delivering patient care in a time of advancing technology, changing roles, increasing illness statewide, and decreasing insurance funding. Patient-Centered Care Units were established, making the patient and family active members of every health care team. Collaborative Care Teams made sound clinical choices, and translated care into a individualized plan for each patient and family. Home Health was then launched to safely monitor care in a home environment.

Case Management offered a better alternative to months in a hospital bed for chronic patients. Exceptional clinical and cost outcomes attracted national attention, and a Healthcare Study Abroad Exchange from Beijing China explored this new rural care system. This resulted in a Professional Partnership Program to help with skills and administrative programming.

Her focus then shifted to the virtual world, as society became web-savvy. Telehealth became the new caredelivery horizon. In 2013, JoEllen joined a five-member interdisciplinary team at CareSpan to develop a ‘virtual clinic in the cloud’. The CareSpan Clinic is a fullyconfigured medical care delivery system that meets or exceeds standards of an in-person exam. Web-based primary and specialty care consultation, via a computerbased ‘clinic in the cloud’, serves remote and underserved

rural communities and South Dakota reservations. The Great Plains Regional Tribal Chairman’s Council is a consortium of 18 reservations in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. The Council now serves 415,000 people with unparalleled access to care. JoEllen works with the SDSU College of Nursing, training a new generation of APNs in digital health care delivery. This network of APNs addresses shortages of primary healthcare providers in remote areas across the globe.

Throughout her career, JoEllen made significant contributions to the advancement of nursing.

She authored 4 books, 26 professional book chapters, and 90 articles focused on nursing science and ethical leadership development. She was invited to the White House to represent South Dakota nurses during the Bush Administration. As President of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, she was the third recipient of the AONE Lifetime Achievement Award, based on the Sioux Valley Hospital’s Patient Care Delivery Model and exemplary clinical outcomes.

People admire a flag waving in the breeze, but JoEllen knows it’s the invisible wind which unfurls the flag for viewing. Countless members of society such as nurses, teachers, and volunteers, are often unrecognized for their innumerable contributions which weave together the fabric of society. Elizabeth Meyer

Medical Advancement Sioux Falls, SD

Elizabeth was born in Montana to George and Ruth Wadsworth in 1947. When her family moved to Gayville, SD, they became the 4th generation to live on and farm the family land. Her mother Ruth grew up in Tulsa, OK, and was a member of the Cherokee Nation Tribe.

Elizabeth graduated from High School in Alexandria, SD in 1965. She enjoyed a trip to the United Nations with her church group, and cheerleading at the South Dakota State B Basketball Championship Tournament for three years.

She met her husband Don while attending Sioux Valley Hospital School of X-Ray Technology. They married in 1967, and in 1970, their daughter Lisa was born followed by son, Michael in 1975.

In 1983, Elizabeth helped develop South Dakota’s first Breast Cancer Screening program. Medical history changed when the American Cancer Society recommended age guidelines for routine screening mammography. This was the first medical test that did not require a physician’s order. With the state’s first dedicated mammography equipment in hand, and training at the University of Oklahoma Breast Cancer Program, Elizabeth began to make a real difference.

Guidelines and screening mammograms were a new concept. Elizabeth presented over 80 educational programs in her first year as Program Manager. The Program flourished because of increased diagnosis and a decrease in mortality as a result. Elizabeth proceeded through her Mammography Certification Board exams, and was selected to attend the American College of Radiology “Train the Trainers” program in Bethesda, MD, training in new techniques to improve imaging.

In 1985, Sioux Valley Hospital purchased the state’s first mobile mammography unit and began offering services

statewide. Another mobile unit was purchased a year later to keep up with the high demand.

Elizabeth initiated a private One-Stop mammography service for the OBGYN, LTD. Clinic. This successful concept offered convenient scheduling of mammograms paired with annual physical examinations. Elizabeth learned that South Dakota was lagging behind in screening and insurance reimbursement policy.

Following a meeting of local legislators to appeal for support, she helped push insurance companies, the South Dakota Medical Association, the South Dakota Hospital Association and legislators to remedy the situation.

In 1988, the first of three bus trips left Sioux Falls with 40 Breast Cancer survivors ready to testify on the benefit of life-saving screening mammograms. The first stop was the Governor’s Mansion, where Linda Mickelson tendered her support and continued with the cause for years. Catherine Piersol also contributed as an attorney, mentor, and political advisor. When Governor George Mickelson signed the bill into law in 1990, the survivors celebrated the gift they had given to South Dakota women, and also made monumental strides in their personal healing process.

In 1992, the OBGYN Mammography service and Medical X-Ray Mammography service merged with Sioux Valley Hospital Mammography program. This partnership became the State’s first Comprehensive Breast Cancer

program; Sioux Valley (later Sanford) Breast Health Institute. Elizabeth was fittingly named the Director.

At this same time, Dr. Thomas Cink, M.D. completed a Fellowship in Breast and Chest Imaging to become the first physician in the state with this distinction. Soon Marilyn Quayle (wife of Vice President Dan Quayle) toured and granted her approval.

Challenges arose in merging three competing mammography services to become one strong team.

When Central Plains Mammography Service became part of Sanford, merging had become easier. Watertown Prairie Lakes Hospital and Sanford Clinic of Aberdeen also successfully merged their mammography services and staffing with Breast Health Institute.

Elizabeth was most proud of the Breast Health Institute team for the support and encouragement each patient received. Team members were empowered to “do the right thing; whatever will make the experience positive”, and they did! Elizabeth received support and encouragement from Physicians and Administrators, and passed this same support along to the staff.

In 1994, Self Magazine named Breast Health Institute as one of the top 10 innovative Breast Centers in the United States. The groundbreaking services that earned this honor included Stereotactic Breast Biopsies, four Support Groups, Educational Programming, Focus Groups, three Mobile Mammography Units, the Comprehensive Lymphedema Program (MLD therapy and Exercise/Support Group), an Osteoporosis Program (Diagnostic and Support Group), Digital Mammography, Scintimammography (nuclear medicine), Genetic Breast Cancer testing and counseling, Dedicated Breast MRI, weekly team discussion of all new patients, R.N. Nurse Navigators, R.N. Nurse Educator and the Survivorship Center.

To fund these important programs, Elizabeth won grants between 1997 and 2000 from Avon Corporation ($80,000 mobile mammography van, breast health library, education to rural mammography technologists and a breast cancer survivor post-surgery video production); Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary (training and certification for Physical Therapists in Lymphedema treatment); and SD Health Research Foundation ($250,000 OsteoporosisSoybean Research).

Elizabeth served as a Board member of the South Dakota Division of American Cancer Society from 1984 to 1992.

She led as Board President, Vice President, Grants Chair, and Race Sponsorship Chair for Susan G. Komen, South Dakota between 2005 and 2011. She helped raise over one million dollars for grants and mammograms through the South Dakota “All Women Count” Program.

As a Trustee with the National Consortium of Breast Centers from 2000-2004, she authored the first National Breast Center Accreditation.

Personally, Elizabeth has been recognized with countless awards including the South Dakota American Cancer Society Division Volunteer of the Year in 1991, the National Conference of State Legislators Women’s Network Unsung Hero Award in 1991, the Y.W.C.A. Leadership Award in Education in 1998, Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Promise of One honor in 2007; BMW of North America, LLC & Susan G. Komen for the Cure Honorable Supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness in 2007; U.S. Postal Service Because We Care Award in 1996, Sanford Clinic’s Management Employee of the Year in 2008, and the Sanford Health/American Cancer Society Champion in the Fight Against Cancer Award in 2009.

Elizabeth retired in 2010 and enjoys spending time with her Grandchildren, family and friends. She credits her meaningful life’s work to the love and encouragement from her own Grandparents, and pays it forward every day through her Grandchildren.

Joy Nelson

Philanthropy Watertown, SD

Joy Nelson is passionate about many things, but she is best known for her love of horses, selling real estate, giving back go her community, and helping people with special needs. She accomplishes this through Joy Ranch, a nearly $12 million western village on the bluffs overlooking a small lake Northwest of Watertown.

Born in 1955 to Carol and Harry Nelson, Joy was a visionary from a young age. Ideas, she learned, can spring from the South Dakota prairie and become reality. She loved horses from about the time she started walking, even though horses were not part of her family's life. As a young girl, her mother would clothe her in fine dresses, but Joy would add a cowboy hat and boots to complete the outfit. Eventually, she laid a sales pitch on her father that he could not refuse, and one day he came home with a horse. Nelson had learned the art of selling as a young girl, and eventually hit road in the early 1960s with her father. She later became the advertising manager for KELO television.

Joy regularly appeared in commercials. Because of KELO's relationship with WCCO in Minneapolis, she spent time hanging out with Festus from Gunsmoke, and the girls from Petty Coat Junction. This exposure to the television industry gave her insight into the world of sales, where creativity and ideas combined to make things happen.

In Junior High, Nelson organized the neighborhood kids and started a night-crawler sales business. The kids gathered the night crawlers, and Joy developed a list of clients. Her father dropped off the worms at various resorts while he was on sales trips, and Joy later would distribute profits to all involved. “I always loved to sell,” she said. “It was like a shot of adrenaline.”

After graduation from Watertown High School in 1974, Nelson entered the business world as a banker. Eight years later, she joined her long-time business partner Peggy Haugan in what would become a stellar real estate career spanning more than 34 years. "Joy and Peggy", as they are known in Watertown, are the City's primary residential developers. The team turned country dirt into paved streets, sidewalks, and new neighborhoods full of children. Over the years, she helped countless people find new homes and businesses. Joy and Peggy helped the City expand by more than 400 acres, and have created more than 450 building lots in Watertown.

Joy never forgot her primary passion, raising horses.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, she spent many days traveling with her show horse, Angel. In 1995, the duo won a national championship. Along the way, the lifelong Watertown resident built a ranch with a riding arena, corrals, and a barn on the Eastern shores of Lyle Lake. She relocated a historic one-room school house

and a country church from Erwin, South Dakota. These historic buildings would have been lost to the ages, if not for Joy’s love of South Dakota history. Eventually, she opened her ranch for special events and horseback riding. She noticed the incredible interaction between the horses and people with disabilities. “I really believe that horses are spiritual. They are so therapeutic in every regard and so intuitive. They pick up on things in people,” she said.

Spreading joy to special needs youth & adults Humanity, Prairie Lakes Healthcare Foundation, Jenkins Living Center Foundation and governing board, the Codington County Historical Society, and the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation and Church Council. She is on Lake Area Technical Institute’s Building Trades Advisory Board, and in that capacity has helped provide opportunities for hundreds of students to learn skills necessary to succeed in the construction industry.

Nelson realized that her many blessings were meant to be shared. She lives a simple life, and has always felt a need to help take care of people. Material things, other than those necessary to support a horse ranch, have always meant little to her. As more people came to visit, she realized her ranch was a special place, and it needed to be made more broadly available. She saw how horses interacted with military veterans suffering from post- She was honored by U.S. Congresswoman Kristi Noem traumatic stress, and how they responded to children with the Congressional Challenge Coin for Spirit with disabilities or autism. Jack Redden

Scientist Rapid City, SD

Jack grew up on a farm in Alvin, Illinois as the youngest of five children. He was an excellent student and athlete, and played baseball on a traveling team when he was in high school.

He left the farm at seventeen and worked for the AFL-CIO Common Laborers Union before joining the Marine Corps at 18. While in the Corps he boxed, which earned extra money and kept him in shape so that he could afford extra “chow”. His company commander at the time saw potential in Jack, and encouraged him to apply for the V-12 Program which would allow him to attend college rather than serve overseas. He was accepted, and chose to attend Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. He finished his Geology degree in three years, and continued working to earn his PhD at Harvard. Both degrees were covered as part of the GI Bill.

Growing up on a farm during the Depression taught Jack many things. He credits it for teaching him to build things and develop three-dimensional concepts and visualizations. His upbringing also taught him the importance of working hard and provided a good background in practicality.

Jack met his wife Harriet while he was at Harvard. They were married in 1951 and moved to Custer, South Dakota while Jack was finishing up his PhD and working for the US Geological Survey. He continued on to work for USGS in Lakewood, Colorado until 1959, when he obtained his first teaching position at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech). In 1964, Jack was part of the team who developed a new university in Ohio; Wright State University, where he served as Dean for five years. In 1969, Jack had the opportunity to return to the Black Hills to serve as a professor of Geology at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. This was where he remained

until his retirement in 1991, continuing as professor emeritus. After retirement, he continued to work on the geology map of the Black Hills for the USGS and as an independent consultant until the age of 82.

Jack’s real love was field geology. His informal, supportive ways created many bonds and affected his students in very positive ways. He managed numerous summer field camps and conducted field trips for countless visiting students and professors. The Black Hills were a safe haven for a metamorphic geologist like Jack. His passion was evident to his students, and everyone else who engaged in his connection to this science.

Former mayor of Rapid City Don Barnett claims Jack as one of his heroes. “Dr. Jack Redden and his associates gave the City Council the first statement of wisdom involving the recovery from the 1972 flood and regarding evacuation of residential housing on the banks of Rapid Creek throughout the City.” Jack and his associates wrote the press release featured on the front page of the Rapid City Journal, just days after the flood, pointing out how detrimental it would be to reoccupy the flood plain. This had been the first attempt to educate the public on what the 100-year urban flood plain means, pointing out that the flood in 1907 was even worse and that the area will undoubtedly flood again.

Jack was a big supporter of the arts, and especially of his wife Harriet and her many contributions to the Rapid City Community Theatre and Children’s Theatre. He helped out whenever he could; first building sets, then later contributing in a few small performing roles himself.

Some may remember him back in the 1980s; Group Theatre’s drunk Porter in Act 2, Scene 3 of Macbeth.

Through a partnership with the School of Mines, Jack spent countless hours developing a realistic slice of the Black Hills at the Journey Museum in Rapid City. This lifesize illustration depicts all of the geological formations spanning 2.6 billion years of geologic history of the Black Hills. This was just one of the many examples of Jack’s community leadership.

Unraveling the Black Hills’ secrets for 50 years

Jack’s most prized accomplishment was his completion of the USGS Geologic map of the Black Hills, published in 2008 with colleague Ed DeWitt after almost 25 years of work and research. Even when government funding dried up, Jack continued his work with help from others to finish what he had started. He was 82 when it was published, and joked that he could die in peace knowing it was finally finished!

Jack has always expressed gratitude for many blessings in his life. He is thankful for his family, friends, colleagues, the values of growing up on a farm, and the opportunity he received to attend college and graduate school. Most of all, he is grateful for the privilege of doing a job he dearly loved, in his favorite place in the world – the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Bill Russell

Arts & Entertainment Spearfish, SD

Bill Russell was born in Deadwood and raised in Spearfish.

His paternal grandparents were Wyoming ranchers and his father was known as “Cowboy” to all.

Somehow, in that Wild West context, Bill was unexpectedly bitten by the theater bug at an early age.

He attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, for two years and spent summers directing shows at a resort in northern New Jersey. There, he met an Oberlin student, Janet Hood. Inspired by Hair, he asked if she’d like to write a rock musical together. They accomplished the task entirely via mail, and Bill Becvar, a professor of Bill’s from Morningside, directed the show at the University of Kansas. That show, a modern version of the Icarus myth titled Sun, Son, won the National BMI InterVarsity Show Competition for original musicals.

Bill took a detour into pop music while continuing to write with Ms. Hood. When Linda Langford and Janet Hood formed a duo called Jade & Sarsaparilla, Bill managed the partnership and wrote their lyrics. He was the impetus behind the formation of Monteith & Rand, a comedy team who first performed as an opening act for Jade & Sarsaparilla. He directed and stage-managed their act for fourteen years, on and off Broadway and at theaters around the nation.

In 1980, Bill made his off-Broadway writing debut, penning book and lyrics for Fortune, featuring music

by Ronald Melrose. The show ran for 241 performances, and was subsequently performed around the US and in Rio de Janeiro. In 1985, he teamed up with Albert Evans and Frank Kelly to create The Texas Chainsaw Musical off-Broadway. In 1989, he directed his AIDS piece titled Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens with music by Janet Hood in New York. Subsequently, he

directed productions around the country and in London including the West End. Elegies has been produced all over the U.K., in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Israel and Australia, among many other countries. An all-star benefit performance in New York in 2001, with a cast of 52, was recorded by Fynsworth Alley.

In 1991, another collaboration with Evans and Kelly titled Pageant opened off-Broadway where it ran for over a year. In 2000, Bill directed a fringe production in London which transferred to the West End. It received two Olivier Award nominations. One award was for costumes and the other for “Best Supporting Performance in a Musical”.

Miles Western won this award for his portrayal of Miss West Coast, competing against three real women! Bill directed productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, Stoneham, MA, Atlanta, the University of Kansas, and at the Black Hills Playhouse. An off-Broadway revival in 2014 received a Drama Desk nomination for “Best Revival of a Musical”, and Jay Records released an Original Cast Recording.

In 1997, Side Show, with music by Henry Krieger, marked Bill’s Broadway debut as a writer, though he had contributed material to Monteith & Rand’s show in 1979. Bill received a Tony nomination for Best Book, and shared one for Best Score with Henry. The show was also nominated for Best Musical with rare joint nominations for Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner as Best Actress in a Musical for their portrayal of the conjoined

Hilton Sisters. The Original Cast Recording was released

by Sony Classics.

A Broadway Revival in 2014, directed by Oscar-winning screen-writer and director Bill Condon, received great critical acclaim and five Drama Desk nominations, including “Best Musical Revival.” The Original Cast Recording of that production was released by Broadway Records. Prior to Broadway, it played at the La Jolla Playhouse and the Kennedy Center, where it won three Helen Hayes Awards, including “Best Musical.” Bill directed a production at the Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2002. The show premiers in London in October, 2016 at the Southwark Playhouse.

Bill and Henry’s Everything’s Ducky; a wacky version of the ugly duckling idea (Hans Christian Andersen was not consulted), premiered with TheatreWorks of Palo Alto in 2000. It received the Will Glickman Award for Best New Play in the S.F. Bay Area, and Garland Awards for Best Score, Set, and Costumes. A majorly revised version under the title Lucky Duck premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2004. Bill directed a production at the Boston Conservatory, and consulted on one at Black Hills State University in his hometown. The Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, presented a version adapted for young audiences. That production played the New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street in New York City in 2012.

Mr. Russell also collaborated with Henry Krieger on Kept; their version of Camille set in and around Studio 54. It premiered with TheatreWorks of Palo Alto. The show was performed at the Edinburgh Festival by students from Oxford University.

Bill and Henry were commissioned by the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to adapt the story "Boonah — the Tree-Climbing Frog" as part of a Japan Festival in 2008. Working with distinguished director Amon Miyamoto, the musical is titled Up in the Air.

Exceptional playwright, lyricist, & director

With Henry, Bill wrote “Santa’s Gonna Rock and Roll,” the opening number of the Radio City Musical Hall Christmas Spectacular for a dozen years, starting in 1994. They were commissioned to write “Take the Flame” for the opening ceremonies of Gay Games IV. This work was subsequently selected as the official anthem of the Gay Games.

The Last Smoker in America, with composer Peter Melnick, premiered off-Broadway in 2012, with the Original Cast Recording released by Yellow Sound Label.

Bill wrote lyrics for Brave New World, an adaptation of the Aldous Huxley novel, for it’s world premiere production at NC Stage in Asheville in 2016.

He also wrote the book and lyrics for Unexpected Joy, music by Janet Hood, which enjoyed its world premiere in July on Cape Cod. Bill married his long-time partner, Bruce Bossard, in 2009, two days before their 30th anniversary. Mr. Russell was given honorary degrees by Morningside College in 2003 and by the Boston Conservatory 2007.

James Dunn 2002 General June 27, 1927 – Aug 11, 2016 Jim was a lifelong resident of Lead, SD. After serving honorably in the military, he enjoyed a 38-year career with Homestake Mining Company, and earned his college degree 1962. On top of his numerous creative and philanthropic endeavors, he served 30 years in the South Dakota State Legislature.

Robert Duxbury 2005 General Mar 14, 1934 – June 6, 2016 Robert “Bob” Neil Duxbury died in June, after dedicating decades of his life to public service. His commitment to cattle and agriculture is evident in the countless honors he received. Regardless of political affiliation, he was always called a humble friend, and will be remembered most as a great family man.

Kimball native Ekstrum took farming to a new level, accepting challenges and implementing new technologies throughout his life. His prestigious involvement in numerous nonprofit, government, and civic organizations showed him the world, but he never lost his love of church and the farm.

Wilbur Peder Foss of Scotland, SD was a teacher, coach, hardware store operator, bank officer, athlete, musician, and beloved family man of unlimited interests. His sharp memory for detail served him well as he wrote about everything from horse trading to politics, demonstrating his love of rural South Dakota life and the many fascinating people he knew along the way.

Long-time religious and civic leader Roger Fredrikson peacefully departed this world at age 95. Educated in divinity, he served humanity and God without fail. He was especially passionate about “the dandelions” and marginalized people everywhere, and helped found and support countless humanities organizations.

Earl Nordby 1997 Professional Dec 8, 1930 – Mar 1, 2016 An entrepreneur from age 12, Earl also earned a Purple Heart in the Korean War, operated the family bottling business, and founded a successful real estate enterprise. Earl was known for his generosity and financial support of Huron, and many organizations throughout the state.

After growing up during the Great Depression, Wayne finished High School and served honorably in the military. Following work in banking, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career serving the University system in English, Theatre, Speech, Literature, and countless creative nonprofit organizations.

Terry Redlin 2001 Arts and Entertainment July 11, 1937 – Apr 24, 2016 One of our state’s most famous artists passed away this year at the age of 78. Redlin rose to national prominence in the 1970s and 80s for wildlife art, which remains on permanent display in Watertown as a symbol of his gratitude to the community that launched his career with a $1,500 Arts Institute scholarship.

• Your gift to the Endowment will help insure the program will continue and grow beyond your lifetime.

• Who oversees the collection and management of these funds?

• The Endowment Funds are managed by the SD Community Foundation.

• Will the Endowment accept gifts other than cash?

• Yes, generally any asset that has value and can be sold will be accepted. Stocks and bonds are typical of this type of gift. Less liquid assets, such as real estate, crops etc. must first be approved by the SD Community Foundation.

If you have real property that you want to donate to the SD Hall of Fame, but want to retain the right to continue living in the property, this plan will work for you. A strong Endowment Fund at the Hall of Fame will ensure a flourishing future. Interest and earnings from the endowment can supplement income for programming.

The Endowment Fund, established in 1991, is managed by the South Dakota Community Foundation.

You can designate the SD Hall of Fame as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Tax benefits vary depending on policy terms.
