WHO MAY BE NOMINATED? Nominees must have resided in South Dakota during their lifetime. The nominee must exemplify the meaning of excellence, demonstrating qualifications, attributes, and achievements in the selected category that are exemplary and distinguished.

WHAT FIELDS ARE ELIGIBLE? To showcase South Dakota’s finest, we accept nominations in six broad categories to cover any area of accomplishment. The following are general descriptions of each category: AGRICULTURE includes all aspects of agriculture.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT encompasses actors and actresses, film, photography, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, communications including radio and television.

GENERAL includes fields such as education, military, politics, and religion.

HISTORICAL includes those who contribute to the fabric and culture of South Dakota.

PROFESSIONAL includes professionals such as business leaders, scientists, inventors, technology experts, medical professionals and pioneers, legal experts, researchers, philanthropists, and others.

SELECTION The South Dakota Hall of Fame board members will review all timely and complete nominations.

Each year, up to ten individuals whose nominating application best represents the achievement of excellence will be selected. The selection criteria for excellence is based on the information provided within the nomination for an individual’s statewide contributions, outstanding leadership, achievement in their chosen category, their skill development, and growth.

NOTIFICATION Individuals selected for induction will be notified in writing. Honorees will also be announced in public press releases and on the Hall’s website.

RECOGNITION Inductees receive recognition at the annual Honors Ceremony held each September, on the Hall’s website and in various publications.

GARY CAMMACK

VISIONARY AGRICULTURALIST AND STATESMAN

When high school sweethearts, Gary Cammack and Amy Gossard married in 1972, they shared a lofty goal - owning their own ranch.

“Being born and raised on ranches, the desire to have a ranch of our own was definitely in our blood,” explained Gary, a fourthgeneration Meade County rancher. Three of his great-grandfathers homesteaded in the area.

The Cammacks began the journey to ranch ownership with nothing but a strong work ethic, faith, and the determination to succeed.

Shortly after they married, the couple purchased the Stoneville General Store. “It was the kind of place where you sold gas, groceries, livestock salt, beer, diamond rings just about everything.”

Looking back, Gary says even though neither he nor Amy had prior business experience, they were able to succeed because of two key factors. “We like our customers, and we have a passion for solving ranchers’ problems.”

While growing the business, Gary worked construction full-time while Amy managed the store. In 1976, Amy continued managing the business while Gary went to work on the Alaskan pipeline. Their oldest son, Scott, was 8-months-old at the time.

Gary credits Amy’s can-do attitude and support for their success in family, business, ranching, and his ability to serve South Dakotans as a state senator. “I have said numerous times, a successful rancher should never own more cows than his wife can feed. In all seriousness, without Amy here, managing the store and ranch - it wouldn’t have been possible.”

When Gary returned from working for a year in Alaska, the couple was able to pay off their debt. And just in time, because a four-yearold feed mill in Union Center came up for sale. The couple took the opportunity and opened Cammack Ranch Supply in 1979.

“It couldn't have been a worse time to get into business. We shouldn't have made it,” Gary said. “One reason we tried so hard to succeed is we had everything to lose.”

Gary attributes their business success to following their customers’ lead. “Our focus will always be on problem-solving.”

Decades later, Gary applied this same approach to public service.

“In business, when someone comes to me with a need or a problem, I am convinced that somewhere out there, there is a solution. In politics, there will always be old problems and new problems. So, my approach is to look at issues, not so much as a problem, but as a solution we have not found yet.”

Gary began his career in public service when he was asked to serve as a Meade County Commissioner.

In 2012, he was elected to serve as District 29 House Representative.

In 2014, he was elected to serve in the South Dakota State Senate. He served as President pro tempore.

In 2020, Gary became the majority leader of the Senate.

Thriving Ranch Community Cammack Ranch Supply has a customer base serving five states and nationwide internet sales. It serves as an anchor business for what has become the thriving ranch community of Union Center.

A Community Center, baseball fields, church, cooperative, trucking company, beef processing plant, salon, post office, café, fire hall, taxidermy studio, and an elementary school all neighbor Cammack Ranch Supply.

Bolstering the community while growing their business has always been a focus for the Cammacks. “I’ve always felt that it’s important to do everything that I can to enhance the quality of life in the community where we live and work, so the next generation will want to call it home and want to build their life here as well.”

A Dream Realized A few years after opening Cammack Ranch Supply, the rancher who owned the adjoining land contacted Gary. “He says you need to own this place. We talked for 5 minutes and within a couple of weeks we had a contract for deed.”

While expanding their business, their family also grew. Gary and Amy have four grown sons, who now have families of their own Scott, Ryan, Reed, and Chris. “The ranch is such a great place to raise kids. It teaches them a work ethic and responsibility. Our sons have all grown up to be successful in business and family. The best part is they chose their spouses wisely and because of this, I have the best job in the world – Grandpa.”

Growing up, the boys were all actively involved in the ranch.

And Gary says without their help, he and Amy would not have been able to manage both the ranch and Cammack Ranch Supply.

“From an embarrassingly young age, the boys were all involved in the ranch work,” said Gary of their 11,000-acre, cow/calf operation.

invested energy into managing their native pastureland through conservation – implementing rotational grazing, installing countless miles of cross fencing and cattle water pipeline, and preserving riparian areas for wildlife.

Since 1984, the family has planted more than 30,000 trees. In 2018, the family’s conservation efforts were recognized with the esteemed Leopold Conservation Award.

“Our belief is that the health of range and the vitality of the wildlife population is a barometer of how well you’ll do in the ranching business. The effects of our conservation efforts, or lack thereof, will be evident 100 years from now.”

Inductees of the South Dakota Hall of Fame share one strong quality in common, and that is their pursuit of achievements and excellence. They come from all walks of life, and from every corner of South Dakota, pursuing their dreams, improving communities, and inspiring the youth of South Dakota.

On February 9, 2022 we had the opportunity to celebrate the Class of 2021 in our second ever Virtual Medallion Celebration online event. It was wonderful to be able to listen to each class member’s feelings about being inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, and testimonials from friends & family. This virtual event is shared out to a larger audience than ever before, and has become a fantastic addition to our programming at the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

The South Dakota Hall of Fame is supported solely by the generosity of our supporters who understand that together, we will have a profound impact on our state by championing a culture of excellence. We hope these stories bring insight and inspiration to all who hear them.

CAPTURING THE BEAUTY OF RURAL AMERICA

Born in New Jersey in 1948, Jon Crane grew up among the crowded cities of the East Coast. When his grandparents introduced him to the West at age 15, those wild and untamed lands so inspired him that after high school graduation, he chose to study at the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a B.A. in Fine Arts in 1971. He was commissioned in the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation and moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota to start his military assignment as a pilot at Ellsworth Air Force Base. During those years, he became irreversibly connected to the wonders of the hills.

Leaving the Air Force as a Captain in 1975, Crane resolutely began his work as an artist in 1976, painting his way into the uncertain future of a professional artist.

Using a dry brush technique with transparent watercolors, Crane became adept at finding landscapes that evoked a simpler life, telling

through his nostalgic watercolors the story of rural America. His depictions have fittingly become known as “Art That Takes You Home,” a trademark that speaks to the emotional impact his work has upon his audience.

In 1980, he opened the Crane Black Hills Gallery in Rapid City, which he operated until 1986. Despite having his own gallery, Crane traveled extensively with his artwork, showing at art festivals throughout America.

After closing his first gallery, he began to distribute his work through galleries around the country, reserving his energy for painting.

In 1995, he and his wife, Gail, opened another gallery in the little mountain town of Hill City, South Dakota, now owned and operated by Lori Nonnast.

During the span of his career, Crane has preserved on watercolor paper many of the priceless treasures that South Dakota offers, scenes of rich meaning to those who live

here. Not only has he contributed to the state as a pictorial historian, he has also used his talent to support several projects that have benefitted South Dakotans. In 1997, Crane painted the Black Hills spruce that graced the lawn at our nation’s capitol at Christmas. America’s Holiday Tree not only raised funds to transport the tree to Washington but became an important symbol of South Dakota’s pride in their natural resources and community spirit.

The following year, the historic George S. Mickelson Trail was completed in September. Crane donated the reproduction rights of two watercolor images that were used to help fund and commemorate this significant project. Throughout his career, Crane has been a regular contributor to environmental organizations including Black Hills Flyfishers Association, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, the National Wild Turkey Federation,

and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Crane is passionate about the need for art in our schools. His desire to encourage children in the arts became especially evident over the last fifteen years as he worked with the Children’s Home Society to help bolster their Arts Endowment Fund. The Jon Crane Benefit Auction for the Children’s Home Society assisted in achieving their goal for a one million dollar art endowment, assuring children the opportunity to include art in their education.

Throughout his career, Jon Crane has documented a vanishing way of life in rural America. Many of the landmarks he painted over the years are no longer standing. In 2007, he became an advocate and an activist to help preserve historic landmarks on public lands in the Black Hills.

Linking arms with a group in Hill City interested in historic preservation, Jon helped found the Black Hills

Historic Preservation Trust. This organization worked with the National Forest Service to stabilize and preserve the Meeker Ranch near Custer, the Gold Mountain Mine near Hill City, and other fragile structures on public land that otherwise would have been lost.

Many South Dakotans have benefited from Jon Crane’s artistic excellence, generosity, and vision for the future good of his state.

He has maintained high standards in his art and business practices, earning the respect of his industry partners nationwide. Entering into the forty-seventh year of his art career, Crane remains an unpretentious man, a practical risktaker, a dreamer whose hope is to bring a little peace into our world.

COMPASSIONATE BUSINESS OWNER Mike Schulte turned $40,000 worth of damages at his car dealership into a huge turnaround for two young people, instead of pressing criminal charges.

After learning more about the boy’s hardships, Mike took strides to help better their lives.

APPRECIATION IN HARD TIMES Postal worker Doug Scott received a letter of appreciation. Along with Supervisor Sara Bell, they sent the letter on to others and it became national news, highlighting the hard work the postal service does to ensure people stay connecting during hard times.

VETERANS HELPING OTHERS Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1054 continues to help others and has donated $26,000 to organizations.

They also show their respect to first responders by saluting hospital staff during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Raymond J. Hillenbrand was born August 28, 1934. He grew up in Batesville, IN where, being the adventurous lad that he was, caused a variety of excitement for the local townsfolk. Ultimately though, Ray had to grow up, and when he did he excelled at education. He graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio with a degree in Mathematics and then went on to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, NY. Immediately following his college days, he joined the Air Force where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. Ray proudly served from 1957 to 1960.

Upon leaving the Air Force, Ray moved home to Batesville where he became very active with the family business, Hillenbrand Industries, Inc. One of his first jobs was to negotiate labor contracts. It was the early 1960's and things were pretty tough back

then. Ray had many hair-raising experiences that first year and the labor talks dragged on and on. Ray, who may have been the most premiere negotiator ever, sat with the labor people and listened to the asks. The first year was long and tough. By the end of the next contract, Ray would meet the labor negotiator and they usually had the agreement worked out over breakfast in the local cafe. It remained that way for the entire time he was in that position.

Needing to take a break from the family business, Ray and his family moved west to South Dakota in 1976. They purchased the Triple Seven Ranch and tried their hand at raising cattle. That just did not scratch the itch that this adventurous family had so they switched to buffalo, bison for those who know the difference and have been raising the 1,800 animal herd ever since. The Triple Seven Ranch is now one of the premiere

herds in the United States.

A brilliant business person and a numerical genius, it is no surprise that Ray was asked to be a member of Governor Mickelson's initial SD Board of Economic Development REDI Fund.

In 1980 Ray and his wife Rita followed their passion for Northern Plains Native American art and invested in Prairie Edge, taking the business from a small chicken coop near Sturgis and turning it into what may be the foremost Northern Plains Indian art gallery anywhere in the world. Ray was so proud of the operation, from the mix of Native and non-Native artists and employees to the customer base who have become such a huge part

of the Prairie Edge experience.

Ray's daughter Margaret (Mimi) has taken the reigns of both the Triple Seven Ranch and Prairie Edge and continues the proud legacy for both operations.

From there Ray turned to doing everything he could to make Rapid City the most caring community in the US. He started by organizing the group that collectively would inspire the public/private collaboration that would become Main Street Square. Through all of the trials and tribulations of taking this on, Ray never faltered. Despite the critics that could just not see the value of having a public gathering place, Ray plowed on. When questions came up, Ray would simply say, "what a wonderful opportunity to help the people better understand what we are trying to do!” In the end, and when Main Street Square proved itself as a truly huge part of the community experience, Ray would love when people came up and

admitted to being one of the nonbelievers who had truly changed his or her mind.

After the Square, it was Legacy Park and the Promenade. Both absolutely wonderful gifts to Rapid City. As Ray started to slow down, he really turned to doing what had always been most important to him and his family, which was helping people.

He started by funding the Collective Impact movement that really helped the community re-evaluate how help is given in the community and how it could become more efficient.

Once those juices started to flow, he then began the forward motion of One Heart and a place where people could heal while they continued to move forward and better their lives.

Ray never got to see the conclusion of the One Heart campus, but he would be proud to know that they opened their doors to their first families on January 4th, 2021, right on schedule!

Dave Kapaska heard the call to service early on in life.

Accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy at the height of the Vietnam War, Kapaska rapidly adopted the code that governs the conduct of our nation’s military officers: Duty, Honor, Country. He embraced those sacred words and the accompanying pledge of service before self.

That pledge of sacrifice for the greater good came to define his career and life.

Born July 18, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lyle and Sue Kapaska, he grew up in nearby Sac City with younger siblings Marc and Jana.

He was blessed with the opportunity to enjoy school, sports, and church activities, all of which provided encouraging teachers and mentors.

At the Air Force Academy, Kapaska and his fellow cadets were challenged to live every moment at the highest level of achievement – a transformational experience that prepared him for future leadership.

Kapaska first thought it was a joke when an Academy mentor, Col. Pete Carter, suggested he consider medical school after graduation.

But the idea was planted. That advice from Carter – later, Dr. Pete Carter of Aberdeen would become a reality a decade later.

After graduation, Kapaska trained as an Air Force pilot and began flying C-141 Cargo Jets around the world. For the first time in his life, he was introduced to a variety of people and cultures.

The final days of the Vietnam War in 1975 presented an opportunity to live out the Academy’s call to service before self. Kapaska

joined other courageous pilots in airlifting thousands of desperate refugees out of Saigon before the Viet Cong took over the city.

Kapaska to join his team in 1999 as chief medical officer. That was his introduction to South Dakota and its people.

Kapaska still gets chills recalling the cheers from the cabin, over the roar of the engines, as his jet left the ground on those dramatic flights.

Lives had been saved – and freedom and opportunity in America awaited.

At Avera McKennan, “Dr. K” led the formation of Avera e-ICU, which brought virtual ICU specialists and care to every hospital in Avera’s network.

A year later, he married Mary Ann Herbst, turning the theory of unconditional love into reality. The love of his life encouraged Kapaska to follow his dreams, however unlikely, and that support served as inspiration for his medical career.

After earning an MBA degree while in the Air Force, Kapaska joined Mobil as a marketing manager. While he quickly found success, the idea of becoming a physician wouldn’t leave him.

He finally succumbed, enrolling at Des Moines University. After graduating from DMU, he completed a residency in Family Medicine. Even as his practice thrived, Kapaska’s business experience and MBA brought him an opportunity to lead – and in a place that hadn’t been on his radar.

That ushered in other breakthroughs that transformed remote care: e-pharmacy, e-emergency, e-school nurse, and e-long term care, among others.

With the critical help of the Helmsley Charitable Trust, Avera extended the technology to hospitals around the globe. Avera eCare, which IBM calls the most robust rural telemedicine network in the world, brought world-class specialty support to every Avera patient.

Promoted to regional president for Avera McKennan in 2010, Kapaska led the expansion of medical facilities throughout the region.

Those included a new Emergency Department in western Sioux Falls, a consolidated Avera Cancer Institute, Precision Oncology, Addiction

Center, and Avera on Louise.

None of those advances were possible, Kapaska notes, without the support of Avera employees and the guidance of the Presentation and Benedictine Sisters.

Kapaska, who retired in 2017, was active in the Sioux Falls community throughout his many years at Avera, serving on the boards of the Washington Pavilion, McCrossan Boys Ranch, United Way, Forward Sioux Falls, and others.

As chair of the Chamber of Commerce and later as Interim Chamber President, Kapaska worked closely with the city, county, and state to ensure forward-thinking on business and workforce development.

In retirement, Kapaska remains committed to service – and a fervent belief that helping every individual “belong” will define South Dakota and its people for generations to come.

Paying it forward, the ‘Dr. Dave and Mary Ann Kapaska New Americans in Health Care Scholarship’ is investing in men and women who dream of a better future.

When Angela Kennecke was 5-years-old, her grandfather introduced her to the tape recorder. She loved to interview family members and then listen to the recording.

When she was 12, Angela was watching a Barbara Walters Special on TV and knew she wanted to conduct interviews when she grew up. Angela pursued her dream of becoming a journalist, beginning by writing for her town paper while in middle school. She was editor of her high school newspaper and worked for a publishing company, writing grammar and vocabulary textbooks, starting at the age of 18.

Angela graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa and later received her master’s degree from Webster University in communications management. She started her career with KELOLAND Media Group as a Rapid City Bureau reporter in 1989. Her first assignment

was on the set of the movie, Dances with Wolves, filmed in the Black Hills, starring Kevin Costner. She thought it was going to be a very glamorous job. It wasn’t. After that first exciting story, she covered everything from the city council to car accidents, as the reporter, videographer, and editor.

In the spring of 1990, Angela was promoted to weekend reporter in Sioux Falls, followed by morning news anchor and producer. At the age of 25, she moved into the coveted top spot on the evening news; only the second woman at KELO-TV to hold that position. She created the franchise “Your Money Matters,” which is still a popular news feature today.

She spent 22 years on the nightshift while raising her three children, many of those years as a single parent.

As an investigative reporter, Angela has uncovered fraud and corruption, resulting in changes to state laws. For three years,

Angela investigated the “GEAR UP” grant scandal in South Dakota. She exposed a lack of oversight and accountability with federal funds.

Angela discovered that $60 million dollars had been put into GEAR UP to get South Dakota’s Native American children into college, yet there was no data to show any students attended college because of the program. Public pressure following her GEAR UP investigation led to the creation of an accountability board within state government and conflict-of-interest disclosures for those on boards and serving in public office. Angela’s investigations also helped military veterans get the Purple Hearts they were owed. Her investigation into a fake fish and vegetable farm near Brookings resulted in federal charges against the con artists. In 2018, Angela received a legislative commendation for excellence in investigative reporting in service to the people of South Dakota. In 2021, she discovered that dozens of South Dakotans had their identities stolen to obtain more than $1 million in fraudulent federal SBA loans during the pandemic.

Angela helped raise millions of dollars for the Children’s Miracle Network as a telethon host and storyteller. Angela also served as an adjunct instructor for South Dakota State University in the journalism department for four years. During one of Angela’s investigations, she met a small-town business owner, named Steve Frey, who asked her to write his life story. The Day His Heart Stopped Crying is an inspirational book of second chances, which has sold more than 2,000 copies.

Over the last decade, many of Angela’s stories focused on the growing opioid crisis. On May 16, 2018, the day her 21-year-old daughter, Emily, died of fentanyl poisoning, Angela was working on an investigation involving overdose deaths. Angela has told Emily’s story nationwide and even internationally.

Angela created a non-profit organization called Emily’s Hope because she never gave up hope on her daughter and is now offering hope to other families struggling with addiction. Emily’s Hope has pledged $250,000 to the Avera Addiction Care Center for treatment scholarships. The charity also

supports mothers in recovery, and their children, staying in the Emily’s Hope Oxford Sober Living House in Sioux Falls.

Angela’s response to the loss of her beautiful and beloved daughter has been to turn her heartbreak into action. Her work on Emily’s Hope and the KELOLAND News Special Report on the Opioid Crisis earned her two regional Emmy Awards in 2019.

Angela and her husband Jeff have three children, Abby, Jordan, and Adam.

Dan was born in Sioux Falls, among the first of the baby boomers and the oldest of five boys raised by Joe and Dona Kirby. He was among the 945 members of the last class to graduate from Washington High School before the opening of the "new" Lincoln High.

Dan developed an early interest in politics and served as chair of the SD Teenage Republicans. His support of free enterprise and individual liberty led him to become active early in the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce where, as Chairman, he kicked off the 1983 effort to market the city under the theme of "Sioux Falls-A Good Thing Going". Dan subsequently served as chair of the SD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and spent six years on the board of the US Chamber of Commerce.

Berkeley. While in college, he met Arlene Wagner on a blind date. Fortuitously, this California native had spent many years visiting her dad’s family in Wagner, South Dakota. They were married in Sacramento after he finished law school and she spent three years as an international flight attendant. Their son Douglas lives in Longmont, CO with his wife Salihah and daughters Amadine and Sagan. Daughter Sharon lives in Fairfax, CA with her husband Shem and sons Thomas and Gabriel.

After practicing corporate law in San Diego for three years, Dan spent his career as Executive VP and General Counsel of Western Surety Company, a fourthgeneration family business founded by his great grandfather, Joe Kirby (SDHOF class of 1993). Dan traveled widely in the US promoting the surety industry. As the senior member of his generation, he was in charge

of the project whereby four owners/ executives bought out 124 other shareholders, most of whom were uninvolved in the business. Over an occasionally contentious period of two years, he was able to build a unanimous consensus that the transaction was a win-win for all parties.

In the public sphere, Dan's most significant project began innocently enough as he was walking out of Downtown Rotary in August of 1989. He was met at the door by the Mayor and Superintendent of Schools, who asked him to chair a "short study " of whether the abandoned Washington High School building could serve as a new performing arts center. Fifteen months of 7:30 a.m. meetings and a quarter-million dollars later, Dan's committee reported that the old building could indeed be repurposed by peeling back the roof over its center portion and dropping in a state of the art performance center.

Concurrently, the local arts community proposed that the existing Civic Fine Arts Center relocate to one side of the building and that a new science/discovery museum be built on the other side.

This is where Dan's history of community involvement positioned him uniquely to negotiate between the competing interests of the business community and the arts organizations. By virtue of already having earned the trust of each group, Dan was able to keep the project in motion right through the grand opening featuring the New York Philharmonic one weekend and Yo-Yo Ma the next, almost exactly ten years after having been cornered by the Mayor and Superintendent. Along the way, Dan chaired the election campaign that (barely) approved the project in a huge turnout, and the capital campaign that raised $13.5 million in non-property tax funds, to which

he and Arlene made the largest lead gift. Finally, Dan served on several implementation committees that helped get the project built, and served one term on its management board before retiring to take a breath.

Dan was recruited to the board of Sioux Valley Hospital in the early 1990s and served as chair when it evolved in 1996 to an integrated health care delivery system. In that role, he hired Kelby Krabbenhoft (SDHOF class of 2017) who served as a visionary, transformational CEO of Sanford Health which is now the largest rural health care system in America.

Arlene and Dan are now blessed to be able to spend several months a year in the California desert.

Dan played competitive golf as a youngster but now enjoys golf socially. He has shot his age twice but reports that after a certain point, getting older does not necessarily make that easier.

Throughout his professional and community efforts, Dan's philosophy has always been to leave the place better than he found it.

Steve Lindquist has spent his entire professional career in South Dakota, working to improve the lives of countless individuals suffering from mental health challenges, addiction, neglect, and abuse. His focused determination comes from a sincere belief in the inherent worth and dignity of each person and the obligation we have to help others, particularly those less fortunate who have conditions that are often misunderstood, stereotyped, or stigmatized by society. As a professional social worker, Steve has worked as a direct service provider, an executivelevel administrator, a policy-maker, and an educator. Tens of thousands of people across the state have been helped through programs he has developed or directed.

After graduating from the University of South Dakota, Steve’s first job was as a Mental Health Aide at the South Dakota Human Services Center (HSC) in Yankton, SD. Only

sixteen years later, Steve would become the youngest Administrator in HSC’s over 100year history.

Steve earned a Master of Social Work degree from Michigan State University, completing a dual emphasis in mental health and administration. These areas would become twin pillars of his career. Upon graduation, Steve returned to South Dakota to work in child protection but was asked to return to HSC to join their initiative to enhance treatment services for patients.

In 1989, Steve was appointed Administrator of HSC in the wake of a tragic event that led to the termination of the facility’s two top administrators. During this time of great challenge, Steve worked to improve safety and security for the Yankton community, patients, and staff; and helped the community, staff, and the state regain

trust in HSC. Steve strengthened HSC’s treatment programs and was privileged to lead the effort to build a new 300-bed facility which, at the time, was the largest construction project in state government history.

Steve was also key to the creation of the IMPACT program which allowed individuals, formerly institutionalized at HSC, to successfully move into the community with appropriate treatment supports.

The program was a major success and received the Governor’s Award for Teamwork based on program outcomes and financial savings. That program has now been implemented in many communities across South Dakota.

Steve was additionally appointed Director of Mental Health for the State, making him one of only two people to have held these dual roles.

In 1998, Steve was asked to lead the Behavioral Health Services of Avera McKennan Hospital. He provided administrative guidance for expanded and refined treatment

services and established formal partnerships with community behavioral health providers.

Steve helped lead the design and construction of the Avera Behavioral Health Center, a world-class 110bed inpatient psychiatric facility, making him one of only a few people in the country to have led two major psychiatric hospital construction projects.

Following retirement from Avera, Steve served as Interim Administrator at HSC and later served as Project Director for The Link, a unique behavioral health community triage center in Sioux Falls created through a partnership between Avera Health, Sanford Health, the City of Sioux Falls, and Minnehaha County.

Steve has served on a variety of boards including; South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners, HelpLine Center, Southeastern Behavioral Health, National Alliance on Mental Illness – South Dakota, National Association of Social Workers – South Dakota, and served on state task force groups related to healthcare, telemedicine, and state mental health law. For many years he served as Chair of the Avera McKennan Ethics Committee.

He has been active in the education of future healthcare professionals; teaching social work, mental health, and social policy classes at the University of South Dakota, Yankton College; and assisting with the training of Psychiatry Residents through the USD Sanford School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry.

Steve was instrumental in obtaining funding and approval for the creation of a Masters of Social Work Program at USD, which produces approximately 50 graduates each year who will serve those with behavioral health and other needs throughout the region.

Steve and his wife, Patricia (who made his career possible) live in Sioux Falls and enjoy their two adult daughters, Ann and April, their husbands, and their four grandchildren.

RYAN MCFARLAND LIFELONG PASSION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Ryan McFarland is an entrepreneur with a passion for mountain biking and motor sports. Born in Valparaiso, Indiana to Joe and Sandra McFarland, he spent his early years with a grandfather who was a race car owner and a father who owned a motorcycle dealership. In 1979, the family moved to South Dakota and bought a motel in Custer, giving him his first taste of small business.

This early exposure to cars, motorcycles, and racing influenced Ryan to ride dirt bikes and mountain bikes, as well as race go-karts and stock cars. He drove his first motorcycle at age 5 and owned his first car at age 12.

In High School, he designed an all-terrain wheelchair that climbed stairs and won 1st place at the International Science Fair in Puerto Rico. His mechanical inclination, early exposure to entrepreneurship, and his competitive spirit led him to invent the U.S. Patented Thudbuster suspension seat-post

for bicycles and a U.S. Patented suspension system for wheelchairs.

After selling the Thudbuster company, Ryan spent time renovating houses and eventually formed his own mortgage company. During that time Ryan met the love of his life and he and Kristi married in 2001. They have been blessed with two sons, Bode (18) and Jesse (15), both of whom share his love of riding and the outdoors.

Ryan’s innovations really kicked into high gear when Bode was two years old. Ryan was eager to have his son join him in adventure sports and the great outdoors. Ryan modified a pedal bike by removing components and making frame modifications until the bike was light, functional, and properly sized for his son, and the Strider Bike was born.

Ryan realized that it wasn't just his son

who could benefit from his little garage creation; kids around the world could experience the same success, adventure, and freedom.

Now with over 3 million bikes sold, Strider Sports International spans across the globe with distribution in over 75 countries. Even with the astounding success of Strider Bikes, Ryan stays true to his South Dakota roots and knows that this expanding global business will always be headquartered in the beautiful Black Hills - fueling the South Dakota economy and supporting nearly 50 employees and their families.

In 2014, the South Dakota Small Business Association recognized the impact Strider Sports International was having on our state and the leadership and passion Ryan had for his staff, and they named Ryan the South Dakota Small Business-Person of the Year.

Ryan has always been an advocate for individuals with disabilities.

He has not only provided employment opportunities but also developed bikes designed specifically for the special needs community.

In 2016 Governor Dennis Daugaard recognized Ryan and the Strider staff with the Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to the rehabilitation and employment of South Dakotans with disabilities.

Ryan wants everyone, regardless of their ability, to experience the freedom and mobility that biking provides. In 2013 he committed to annually giving 1% of gross revenue from every Strider Bike sold to charity. To date, Strider donations

have surpassed $1M in cash and products. He continually supports Rapid City organizations and is well known as a community leader.

In 2017, Ryan founded a nonprofit to continue the effort to get more kids on bikes and help communities on a national scale. The All Kids Bike campaign is a nationwide movement of the Strider Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to teach every child in America how to ride a bike in kindergarten PE class. Currently, the All Kids Bike Program is in over 330 schools in 41 states, teaching nearly 300,000 students to ride. This program is expected to double by the end of 2022!

His passion for riding and giving children throughout the nation the opportunity for a healthy future has inspired donors and community leaders from all walks of life to support the All Kids Bike mission.

When Ryan isn’t changing the world by getting more kids on bikes, he enjoys touring different regions on his adventure motorcycle and brainstorming more ways to make an impact on the lives of everyone he meets.

Raised by her widowed mother, Marian Sullivan learned at an early age the value of hard work, dedication to a goal, and a lifestyle of giving back.

After graduating in 1950 from Sioux Falls College with a math major, she met, at that same institution, and married her life-long partner, Bill. Together they raised five children and in 1968 started the Sullivan Import Company. The fledgling company encountered many challenges including funding for their visionary company. Twice rejected by the SBA for funding, they finally found financial support from a bank along with money lent from family and friends.

They combined Bill’s expert selling skills with Marian’s math background and created the start of a highly successful enterprise.

Saddened by Bill’s death in 1987, Marian now faced new challenges as sole owner.

The company continued to grow as a viable business in the gift industry. Marian gave much credit to the success and growth of the business to hiring good people. The growth of her business necessitated a move to a new facility. As with all aspects of the business, Marian relied heavily on the input of her employees in designing and organizing the new facility. In 1994, Sullivans moved from two warehouses to a 137,000 square foot state of the art complex. The business continued to expand and was a highly respected global entity within the gift and floral industry.

Marian traveled extensively on overseas buying trips for her business and was respected and admired for her integrity and business acumen by colleagues both nationally and overseas. This respect was unique within the Asian culture as she was a woman at the head of a large successful

corporation. Over her 45 years in business she worked with over 150 factories, bought in foreign currency and employed over 100 local employees and 45 national sale associates.

Within the business. Marian allowed her faith to lead. Against the better judgment of her Human Resource Director, Marian offered Bible studies to her in-house employees.

Convicted by a Christian radio broadcast, Marian implemented a bonus pay structure for her employees. The implementation of the bonuses was just another way that Marian acknowledged the importance of her employees’ contributions.

In 1996, Marian’s business savvy was recognized and she was honored by Entrepreneur Magazine as being one of the top entrepreneurs in the United States and also received the Governor’s Outstanding Philanthropist award for the State of South Dakota in donating to over 160 organizations, Gifts and Decorative magazine listed Marian as one of the top 15 women in the gift industry in 2009.

Even though Marian received

many awards and accolades for her business prowess, she always kept God and family as her life priorities. She shared her life philosophy, business expertise and generosity with her community threefold - time, talent, and financial resources. Marian’s philosophy was always more about God and less about her. She also lent her talents to many boards including Volunteers of America Foundation, Children’s Home Society, Children’s Inn, Central Church, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce and the University of Sioux Falls. In 2005, The Faith and Living Center at USF was named for Bill and Marian Sullivan in honor of their overwhelming support of many projects focused on advancing Christian doctrine and education.

A feature of the center was the hosting of Bible studies to all students attending that University.

Marian sold her multi-million dollar business in 2014 but has continued to maintain an active presence in the community.

While in her life, Marian’s business expertise was highly visible, her greatest achievement may be the development of the abilities and

talents of the fortunate individuals who worked with her. Every step she took, both in business and life, was based on following God’s plan, her eyes were first and foremost focused on Him.

One of her favorite verses from John15:5 says I am the vine. You are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.

Remaining steadfast in Him, Marian’s life branched out in countless directions and bore much fruitsome in full bloom and others still in the seed stage. Marian walked her journey with God as her leader, provider, and inspiration with the future being His to cultivate.

CRAIG TIESZEN

LIFETIME DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY SERVICE

Craig John Tieszen was born October 24, 1949, the son of John and Catherine Tieszen.

The oldest of three kids, brother Reed and sister Jan, he grew up on the family farm in Canistota, SD. He went to country school for the first 6 years before finishing his early education in town school.

His character was defined by his rural roots and family, with honesty, kindness, courage, compassion, and unparalleled integrity and civility.

He went on to graduate with Honors from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. While in college, he began what became a life-long commitment with the Rapid City Club for Boys, a non-profit

46 • 2021 HONORS CEREMONY

aimed at providing support and guidance for at-risk youth. With the lure of adventure and opportunity to serve his country, in the summer of 1971, Craig enlisted in the Peace Corps and moved to Kenya. He worked as a high school teacher in science and math and applied his engineering background on school breaks to help build and repair water systems for rural villages. This two-year commitment turned into four and started a lifetime passion for community engagement and service leadership.

After the Peace Corps, he joined the Rapid City Police Department as a patrolman. He loved being immersed in the community, and this on-the-ground experience inspired him to revive the Adopt-a-Cop program, a local partnership between elementary schools and the police department. After rotating through nearly every division in the department, Craig was appointed as Chief of Police in 2000.

He was proud of the work he did to advance the formal education of young officers and strengthened relationships between the police department and the Native American community. He was a graduate of the FBI academy and led by example to hold public agencies to high standards in public service. In 2012 he was recognized for his work with an honorary doctorate from the SD School of Mines and Technology.

Following a 32 year career in law enforcement, Craig was elected to the South Dakota State Senate representing District 34. His political compass was driven by a desire to improve the lives of all South Dakotans. In Pierre, he was known for his intellectual curiosity and civil, measured response.

He was a great listener fiercely

committed to the legislative process. He sponsored progressive legislation for adult and juvenile criminal justice reform, working to expand the definition of domestic abuse to allow more victims to access assistance programs and developed rehabilitation programs for offenders. He also served on a Blue Ribbon Task Force to advance education across the state.

Craig loved to stay active and enjoy the beautiful Black Hills. He initiated the Mickelson Trail Bike Ride with the Rapid City Club for Boys, where he led groups of boys on a 3-day, 109 mile bike ride to encourage them to experience and appreciate nature. During the winter months, he worked as an official for youth, YMCA, high school girls, and boys basketball.

Craig was not only a cornerstone in the community but was a dedicated family man who was the cornerstone of his family. He married his wife Debra in 1980 and was deeply proud of his two daughters, Leslie and Laura, and their families, who shared his enthusiasm for exploring the world and service to others. A lifelong learner, Craig saw traveling as a way to connect and understand the diversity of the world and loved sharing his global experiences once he got back home.

The influence of Craig’s life can still be felt on the streets of Rapid City, across South Dakota, and around the world.
