WHO MAY NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL? Anyone may nominate an individual, living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Self-nomination is not permitted, and those currently serving on the South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors or its staff are not permitted to nominate individuals.

WHO MAY BE NOMINATED? Nominees must have resided in South Dakota during their lifetime. The nominee must exemplify the meaning of excellence, demonstrating qualifications, attributes, and achievements in the selected category that are exemplary and distinguished.

WHAT FIELDS ARE ELIGIBLE? To showcase South Dakota’s finest, we accept nominations in six broad categories to cover any area of accomplishment. The following are general descriptions of each category: AGRICULTURE includes all aspects of agriculture.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT encompasses actors and actresses, film, photography, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, communications including radio and television.

GENERAL includes fields such as education, military, politics, and religion.

HISTORICAL includes those who contribute to the fabric and culture of South Dakota.

PROFESSIONAL includes professionals such as business leaders, scientists, inventors, technology experts, medical professionals and pioneers, legal experts, researchers, philanthropists, and others.

SPORTS includes athletes, coaches, and others.

SELECTION The South Dakota Hall of Fame board members will review all timely and complete nominations.

Each year, up to ten individuals whose nominating application best represents the achievement of excellence will be selected. The selection criteria for excellence is based on the information provided within the nomination for an individual’s statewide contributions, outstanding leadership, achievement in their chosen category, their skill development, and growth.

NOTIFICATION Individuals selected for induction will be notified in writing. Honorees will also be announced in public press releases and on the Hall’s website.

RECOGNITION Inductees receive recognition at the annual Honors Ceremony held each September, on the Hall’s website and in various publications.

CHAMPION OF THE TECHNICAL EDUCATION SYSTEM OF SOUTH DAKOTA

After retiring a U.S. Air Force Colonel, Mike Cartney returned home and helped transform the state’s technical college system.

character with faith, honesty, responsibility, hard work, mutual respect and putting others first.

Today, with Mike’s influence, not only does Lake Area Tech consistently garner top-in-thenation honors for student graduation, retention, and placement rates; South Dakota’s technical education system is also recognized as the top system in the country.

Icons of secondary education like Marv Sherrill, Bill Zubke, and Ernie Edwards honed Mike’s competencies and character. As a four-year varsity wrestler and top academic student, Mike had several options following graduation from Watertown High School.

Fellow 2020 SD Hall of Fame Inductee Larry Pressler started Mike’s career by appointing him to the United States Air Force Academy.

When Mike was born his father actually took a day off from farming just north of Presho to escort his mother to Pierre. The “middle child” of six, Mike’s early years were spent in agricultural communities outside Presho, Pukwana, Draper, Murdo, and Pierre before his family moved to Rapid City in 1966 and to Watertown in 1970. Mike remembers trips through “South Dakota gumbo” to help with harvest, calving, or to celebrate holidays with relatives. This rural upbringing formed Mike’s 8 • 2020 HONORS CEREMONY

The Academy launched his 30-year career.

Mike was the first person to earn varsity letters at two military academies in Rugby and the first Watertown alumnus to graduate from the Academy. Mike returned as the Academy’s intercollegiate Men’s Rugby head coach, leading them to a national runner-up finish.

Coined by a US President and thanked by a Prince of Saudi Arabia for his service, Colonel Cartney is highly-decorated for his duty during six wars and many other conflicts.

Mike also led teams with the Drug Enforcement Agency, US Marshal Service, and FBI. A National Fellow to Harvard University, Mike’s work became reference materials for Presidential policy. While standing battle-staff following 9/11, Mike was hand-picked to also developed Department of Defense’s futuristic 2020 operational concepts in communications, as well as cyberspace.

Mike’s longing to return home prevailed, and they moved to Watertown in 2007. Mike hit the ground running at Lake Area Technical Institute as Vice-President before assuming the Presidency in 2014.

His leadership and vision provided the perfect segue for an impact of epic proportions in South Dakota and nationally.

Mike modestly led the college to a litany of success, most notably the Aspen Prize for Community

College Excellence and hosting President Barak Obama as their 2015 commencement speaker. His work in student success, industry partnership, community-partnering, and advocating the value of community colleges has been featured in White House summits, Forbes, New York Times and TIME magazine, to name a few. US Senator John Thune invited President Cartney to testify before the US Senate Commerce Committee on addressing the skilled workforce gap.

A highly respected legislative and public spokesman for technical education, Mike’s advocacy was foundational to the landmark passage of Constitutional Amendment R, establishing technical education as the third form of education in South Dakota. He was instrumental in legislation to create the first South Dakota Board of Technical Education, align instructors’ salaries with industry, and rename ‘technical institutes’ to ‘technical colleges’.

Modelling lifelong values of mutual respect, putting people first, and empowering individual to “do the right thing,” Mike indemnified student success at Lake Area Tech by fostering a culture of caring and redefining student success. Mike’s

ditties of: “College is a pathway, not a destination”; “success is placement not just graduation”; and “Although student-focused, we are industry and community facing” became national mantras. Mike is a featured national speaker for conferences like the Western Governor’s Associations and US News & World Report, and was one of only seven presidents to serve on a national committee to define college student success.

Governor Daugaard nominated Mike to President Trump’s American Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

Mike and his late wife, Harriett, raised two great children, Trisha and Byron, and have five grandchildren, Natalie, Andrew, Alex, Alyssa, and Austin. Mike grew up enjoying the outdoors and is an avid pheasant hunter. He is involved in community service, energizes multiple community boards, and founded Watertown’s Sea of Goodwill and Veteran/First Responder Appreciation Day.

A CULTURE OF

Inductees of the South Dakota Hall of Fame hale from all over the state, and are as unique as the geography of South Dakota. They come from different backgrounds, differ in gender, race, political orientation, vocation and avocation. But they share one strong quality in common, and that is their pursuit of achievements and excellence.

Our class of 2020 was unable to have an in-person Honor’s Ceremony last year, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, but the South Dakota Hall of Fame Inducted them in a Virtual Medallion Celebration, which was a huge success. We were able to share these Inductees’ stories with a wider online audience than ever before and we are thrilled to celebrate the Class of 2020 in person this year, during this Honors Ceremony in September.

We hope these stories serve as inspiration and motivation, especially to the younger generation of dream chasers here in South Dakota. The South Dakota Hall of Fame is supported solely by the generosity of our supporters who understand that together, we will have a profound impact on our state by championing a culture of excellence.

INNOVATIVE EDUCATOR DEDICATED TO HELPING STUDENTS ON THE MARGINS

Glenna (Schauer) Fouberg was an innovative educator with a firm commitment to helping students on the margins of the state’s education system. Glenna received a Bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Northern State University in 1963 and a Master’s degree in counseling from South Dakota State University in 1968. Over 38 years, Glenna taught at Eielson AFBAlaska and in Sisseton, Bristol, Webster and Aberdeen, South Dakota; the last 13 years as the director of the Alternative Learning Center in Aberdeen.

As a teacher, she saw that barriers to students earning their diplomas existed both inside and outside the classroom.

In Aberdeen, she created a team of educators who pushed the limits to care for students. Fouberg and her staff helped kids find clothing, paced the school day to accommodate students’ work and family commitments, and provided expectations and discipline. The ALC had an 86 percent graduation rate during Fouberg’s tenure.

Glenna also mentored other school districts on creating alternative education programs.

Changing lives through her work in alternative education at the district and statewide levels was Glenna Fouberg’s top achievement. She molded Aberdeen’s Alternative Learning Center (ALC) where she changed the trajectories of hundreds of lives.

Glenna extended the ALC to middle school, the Juvenile Detention Center, and the New Beginnings Center (a home for at-risk youth).

Glenna dedicated her career to improving the quality of education in South Dakota.

In 1994, Glenna was honored as the South Dakota Teacher of the Year. In 1998 she was appointed to the State Board of Education where she served 19 years (4 as president) under 3 governors and 5 Secretaries of Education. Glenna helped start the annual Indian Education Summit, which continues

today. She helped lead the South Dakota Indian Education Advisory Board for 10 years. She co-founded the South Dakota Teacher Summit.

Teach for America, which places teachers primarily on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, was brought to South Dakota with her leadership.

As an educator for 38 years, Glenna championed students who otherwise might have failed.

Glenna was relentless in her support for marginalized students in the state’s education system, “We had to push to create new programs to help all students,” she said.

Glenna was also dedicated to community service and was a passionate and persuasive fundraiser. She fundraised millions of dollars for organizations including the Aberdeen Area YMCA, Northern State University, and the United Way. She served on statewide boards, including the Ronald McDonald House and Fairy Godmothers. She created the charity lunch group in Aberdeen, served as president of the NSU Foundation, co-chair of the United Way Rails Club, and moderator and assistant organist of Plymouth Congregational Church. She served on dozens of local boards and served on the boards of the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony, YMCA, and Aberdeen Area Community Foundation. She and her husband, Rod, co-chaired the capital campaign to build the YMCA. Glenna and her husband had two sons, Robert and Dan, two daughters-in-law, Erin and Nancy, and four grandchildren, Margaret, Henry, Abigail, and Andrew.

What does it mean to be an artistic director, a cultural leader, in the 21st Century? At a time when entertainment is ubiquitous, it can be difficult to know how seriously to take the “arts.” Arguably, artists and leaders of arts organizations have more influence over the populace than policy makers in houses of government. Indeed, many of the decisions made on a political level are guided by popular opinion which has been shaped, often almost imperceptibly and over long periods of time, by the music we listen to, the books we read, the movies we watch.

How to channel that potential in ways which positively influence our society, is Delta David Gier’s challenge and calling.

Delta David Gier came to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra in 2004. He brought with him a conviction that an orchestra, rather than being simply an arts institution, should be an agent for positive

change, for community-building. Without preconceptions as to how this would translate to South Dakota, he has over many years as Music Director of the SDSO guided its transformation into an ensemble which serves the people of this state uniquely; from reservations to refugee communities, he has brought people together through the sharing of something which we all love: music.

He grew up in an academic home, his father a biochemist. Music was always present, as both of his parents were amateur musicians; his father played several instruments (badly, alas) and his mother sang (also not particularly well ...). A love for music and art was instilled in Delta David through classes and lessons from an early age. While he originally imagined following the well-trod scientific path (his father was one of four brothers with PhDs in the sciences), it was clear where his sensibilities lay.

Musical training afforded him many opportunities; in addition to completing a Master’s degree at the University of Michigan School of Music, he spent summers participating in the festivals of Tanglewood, Aspen, and Interlochen.

A Fulbright scholarship allowed him to begin a professional conducting career in Europe. After an apprenticeship at the Philadelphia Orchestra, he served for many years as an assistant conductor at the New York Philharmonic, where he conducted several seasons of the New York Philharmonic’s famous Young People’s Concerts. Guest conducting engagements have taken him to many of the major orchestras in the US as well as in many parts of the world, such as China, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Italy, Norway, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and other European countries.

While celebrating with sheer joy a symphony orchestra’s core purpose of playing the greatest music accumulated over centuries of Western culture, Gier has been able to infuse both the mission and the programming of the SDSO with an ethos of service. The Lakota Music Project was developed carefully over the course of several years to address racial divisions. After many successful tours of that program, the project has been expanded

into Bridging Cultures, which seeks to facilitate understanding among all South Dakotans through appreciation of who we are and who we are becoming.

professionally, Gier is often quite busy speaking, writing, and working with various global ministries such as Crescendo International and the European Leadership Forum.

Permeated with music composed during our time, Gier’s programming honors tradition with an eye towards the future. Beginning with his first season at the SDSO, he instituted a series of concerts based on the Pulitzer Prize, welcoming many leading American composers to residencies with our orchestra—an idea the Wall Street Journal praises as “an unprecedented programming innovation.” Investing in the future of the art form has always been one of Gier’s priorities, and the SDSO has benefited greatly both in the enrichment of its repertoire and its reputation as a leading regional orchestra. Gier has chaired the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for music, as well as serving on the boards of the American Composers Forum and Soli Deo Gloria, a Chicagobased foundation dedicated to the commissioning of new works of sacred music.

Gier’s approach to programming and service has brought significant positive attention to the State of South Dakota.

Publications such as the Washington Post and the New Yorker have also noted the innovation and impact of the SDSO.

The integration of faith with music has been a lifelong passion and pursuit, which has led naturally to his dedication to promoting intercultural/intergenerational communication through classical music. When not conducting

Ben Hunhoff grew ill from cancer and died in 1927, leaving his wife Mary with nine young children on their Yankton farm. Those years shaped the Hunhoff family for generations.

The Great Depression was beginning, and times were tough. Banks and doctors tried to confiscate the farm due to Ben’s medical expenses. Mary hid her work horses at the neighbors, so they weren’t taken by creditors.

Friends urged her to send a few kids to various relatives, but she was determined to keep everyone together. Gay and Bernie, ages 12 and 11, were the oldest; they worked the land and helped raise their siblings.

Bernie left school in the 8th grade and started farming. He eventually married a nurse and aspiring poet, Margaret Modde, and together their raised seven boys on that same farm.

Their legacy of determination, good works and family have since spread far beyond.

Their son Mark became a farm implement dealer and leader in the hospital, church, and college. Dave served 36 years as county sheriff. Dan is an entrepreneur and physical therapist. Randal became a newspaperman and Brian is a journalist and register of deeds.

Patrick has developmental disabilities and serves as example of fortitude.

A middle son, Bernie Jr. — the 2020 inductee to the Hall of Fame — says it would be impossible to tell his story without going back to 1927 and the death of the grandfather he and his brothers never knew. Their grandmother’s resilience and the family’s love for the land and South Dakota have impacted their lives and careers.

Bernie Hunhoff Jr. married Myrna Mulloy in 1974, the year he graduated from Mount Marty College. He worked for U.S. Rep. Frank Denholm and for newspapers in Madison

and Watertown. He assisted Dr. Karl Wegner in promoting a fouryear medical school at USD. In 1978, he and Myrna started a weekly newspaper, The Observer, aided by Brian. Bernie and Myrna started South Dakota Magazine in 1985, hoping to capture the essence of South Dakota. Though they struggled for subscribers and advertisers in the early years, they recognized that stories were important to readers.

“We discovered that stories of hardships like our family and so many families endured — plus true tales of adventure, humor, nature, politics and business — gave people a better sense of place,” Hunhoff said. One reader, who had moved to another state, wrote to say that the Hunhoffs should help her find a job because she was homesick from reading the stories and moving home to Menno. She wasn’t alone.

Newcomers to the state sent the magazine to relatives — many of whom had never lived in South Dakota — and soon they wanted to visit. Some hoped to move here.

Parents urged their children to read the magazine so that they would

better understand the state, and businesses subscribed for customers and employees because they recognized the value of the stories.

Hunhoff says he’s come to believe that “sense of place” is one of the great gifts a person can receive. “When you better understand the place you live, life becomes more interesting and more meaningful. You also understand the world as a whole when you know your own place.”

South Dakota Magazine is now the state’s largest print publication, with 40,000 subscribers and an estimated 160,000 readers and a talented staff of 10 that publish in an 1875 brick house in Yankton built by Territorial Governor John Pennington. Hunhoff has written and co-authored four books on South Dakota. He also

served in the state legislature (19931998 and 2009-2016), championing farmers, workers, small business, and victims of discrimination. He is also a staunch protector of our natural resources.

But his favorite role has always been to wander South Dakota with a Nikon and notebook, eyes alert for an interesting person or place. As he grows older, he’s often accompanied by his grandchildren, all of whom have inherited the family passion for South Dakota’s outdoors. Few South Dakotans have so extensively traveled and written about the state over a career now spanning 5 decades.

In 2015, the Hunhoffs’ daughter, Katie, became publisher of the magazine; their son Chris is the CIO for Mount Marty. Chris and his wife Betsy also operate Yankton’s Boat House. The grandchildren are Steven, Laura, Maiya, Alex, Ben, and Maggie.

Our annual Honors Ceremony inducts a select group of new Champions for Excellence each year. Our Legacy of Achievements program tells the continuing stories of our inductees.

The personal stories of over 700 inductees are available online and in the Visitor & Education Center. Special exhibits focus on areas of achievement such as Agriculture, Business, Native American Heritage, Education, Political Leaders and Women. Their stories can inspire, educate, and build local connections in our fast-paced, global world. Our Legends & Learning program offers teachers a South Dakota history curriculum using online, interactive tools for storytelling and learning.

Our Acts of Excellence program recognizes individual deeds and actions that demonstrate excellence throughout the state.

Kitty Kinsman is a passionate advocate who has used her voice to positively influence the health and quality of life in South Dakota and her community. She is known for her strong leadership and for her ability to energize, engage and support others to get things done.

Kitty grew up in Watertown SD, the oldest daughter of Earle and Connie Kinsman’s of six children. Her father ran a successful insurance business and was active in community and service organizations. Her mother was the family and office organizer, church volunteer and a person who could make anyone feel welcome.

Kitty’s foray into public policy and advocacy began as part of the high school debate team where she learned to research issues, cultivate persuasive skills and work in teams.

returned to Watertown where she met the female Chamber CEO whose mentorship influenced Kitty’s early career. She encouraged Kitty to create a position as the first Executive Director of the SD Glacial Lakes Association. Kitty became the first Chair and volunteer lobbyist for the SD Tourism Caucus, a new statewide tourism advocacy group formed to advance legislation making Memorial Day a Monday holiday. That experience was impactful on two fronts -- the legislation passed and Kitty met her future husband, Steve Zellmer.

In 1993, Kitty was hired as Assistant to the Secretary of the SD Department of Health (DOH) to spearhead its legislative efforts and special projects, including chairing the Governor Bill Janklow’s Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Advisory Council. Janklow appointed her Secretary of Health in 1985, one of the country’s youngest health officers.

She was reappointed by Governor George S. Mickelson.

While at the DOH, she and her team advanced several policy initiatives including: making all state facilities smokefree; creating the Office of Rural Health, a collaboration with the USD School of Medicine; placing a moratorium on nursing home bed construction to shift investment into noninstitutional options for persons in need of long term care; and launching the HEALTH

2000 initiative, an ambitious public/ private effort to improve the health status of South Dakotans.

In 1989, Kitty received a Bush Foundation Leadership Fellowship and left state government to pursue a master’s degree at Stanford University Business School. The Stanford experience led to cofounding a health sciences software company to support pharmaceutical and biotech research in Silicon Valley with two classmates. The start-up venture underscored the importance of building effective teams and how technology could be used to support teams working remotely.

Kitty returned to South Dakota in 1996 and was asked by a local Rapid City physician to help organize tobacco-free efforts. Kitty’s passion for health policy was rekindled.

She formed The K Group to use her coalition building and advocacy skills to advance smokefree and other health policy initiatives. Kitty led the formation of the South Dakota Tobacco Free Kids Network in 1998, a coalition of 50 statewide organizations whose efforts over 12 years resulted in one of the country’s most comprehensive indoor smokefree laws. Kitty’s ability to build consensus and organized advocates continues to have a positive impact on access to healthcare in rural areas and services to persons with disabilities.

Kitty has served on many boards, often contributing her leadership as chair to provide stability during critical times of executive transition and organizational change. Some of those organizations include the Black Hills Area Community Foundation, Rapid City Chamber, South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation, Children’s Care, LifeScape Foundation, Junior Achievement, Black Hills Air Service Task Force, Community Health Center of the Black Hills and Wellmark South Dakota.

She currently chairs the state Recreational Trails Advisory Council, is a member of Elevate Rapid City’s Public Policy Committee,

and serves on the non-partisan HER VOTE HER VOICE Centennial delegation appointed by Governor Kristi Noem to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment and preserve and promote women’s history in South Dakota.

A 2010 Athena Leadership Award recipient, Kitty’s leadership extends beyond her professional career. She championed downtown revitalization in Rapid City and engaged donors to support projects that included relief to ranch families following the Atlas blizzard, completion of the Mickelson Trail, building Outdoor Campus West, and LifeScape’s center for children and 2020 HONORS CEREMONY • 27

One hundred ten Native American families have had jobs for 30 years in South Dakota because of the work of Bruce Long Fox and the team at Rural America Initiatives. Support from the RAI family and Board reaches to another 300 families in Rapid City and the Fort Thompson area. Bruce knows his efforts will help the next seven generations to survive and thrive. When families are centered in Lakota values of generosity, courage, respect, and wisdom Lakota Culture survives and grows. Bruce’s life and work have shown this.

In 2010, the dropout rate for Native American students at Rapid City Central High School was 63%. That year a Lakota Fatherhood mentoring project developed by Bruce Long Fox and his RAI team entered the High School. Just ten years later the dropout rate was cut in half, to 31%. The Ateyapi program brings success for Native students. In its 25th

year of operation it serves over 1000 Native students, grades 4 through 12 in the Rapid City School System. Bruce has been Executive Director of Rural America Initiatives since 1992. The non-profit organization employs Lakota and Native community members to serve needs of families who move to Rapid City by employing cultural strengths and Lakota language. Bruce has guided a muchappreciated Urban Head Start initiative supporting Native children and families.

“He is like a buffalo,” his wife Paula says when she speaks of him, “He stands strong in a storm and he feeds the people.”

Born in Pierre, SD in 1956, Bruce lived in East Pierre where American Indian people from all

the Great Sioux Reservations came to live and work. It was a rough and tumble place. Kids learned survival skills and got in trouble with the law.

When Bruce was 9 years old a judge told him, he would be a rapist and murderer by the age of 15 and sent him away to St. Elizabeth’s Boarding School in Wakpala, SD. When Bruce was at Wakpala the school staff thought something was wrong. He slept through school every day. Mrs. Sherwood, his fourth-grade teacher requested special testing for her student. The testing showed her fourth-grade student had a 10th grade reading level and knew 9th grade math.

Life changed for Bruce. He was no longer labeled a special education student. Now he was gifted and talented! His teachers pushed him to achieve! Mrs. Sherwood and her family cared for him during the summers and as far as he was concerned, they adopted him.

Father Vine Deloria, Sr., the family’s Episcopal priest, arranged for Bruce to attend St. James School, a private college preparatory school in Maryland. He attended for five years and graduated in 1975. While there Bruce was honored with induction into the century-old fraternity of the Colonel Ringgold Society. At St. James Bruce received the education of a Southern gentleman.

From the day he arrived at the Prep School, his football coach, D.I. Barr knew Bruce would attend Dartmouth College. Dartmouth was chartered as a school to educate Native Americans and Mr. Barr was proud to be an alumnus. Bruce applied for college admission to one school. Dartmouth College accepted him with an early decision. While at Dartmouth he learned much from Professor Michael Dorris, author of Yellow Raft In Blue Water and Native American studies professor. Dorris inspired Bruce to have a good heart for the People.

After three years at Dartmouth College Bruce transferred to the University of South Dakota at Vermillion where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Master of Business Administration. His business school Dean said he could go anywhere in the world and be successful. It turns out the place Bruce wanted to be was Rapid City, near the Black Hills. It was elders in the Lakota community of Rapid City and the men on the basketball court at the YMCA who sustained and encouraged Mr. Long Fox forward. These were the people who recognized Bruce as a human being and knew he had important gifts to share with the community.

A lifelong journalist and First Amendment champion, Jack Marsh is a South Dakotan by choice rather than birth. Since the Marsh family moved to Sioux Falls from the Northeast, Jack earned distinction in the state and nation, working inside and outside journalism and the news industry as an effective, credible voice for truth, fairness, justice, equity, education and excellence.

Jack has led or launched several organizations, initiatives and programs aligned with his principles and interests.

Those efforts have had an enduring positive impact on countless individuals and on society, in South Dakota and beyond. A crowning achievement occurred in 2017, three years after retirement, when Jack and colleague Randell Beck co-founded South Dakota News Watch, a publicly funded, nonprofit, independent news organization.

Jack was born and raised in the thenbooming industrial city of Niagara Falls, N.Y., the youngest of four children and the only son. Named John S. Marsh Jr. after his father, he was nicknamed “Jack” at his mother’s insistence because she didn’t want anyone calling him “Junior.”

As parents, John Sutherland Marsh and Muriel MacLaren Marsh were consistent in the behavior they modeled, the values they instilled and the expectations they set: unconditional love and loyalty to family and friends; unwavering honesty; kindness; quiet generosity; open-mindedness; and civic and social responsibility.

Muriel Marsh, a former teacher, was dedicated to raising her children. John S. Marsh was arguably the most prominent public figure in the community, the former district attorney and a distinguished jurist. He

held elected office in New York State for 39 years.

The government-service career of John S. Marsh also shaped aspects of family life, or what Jack’s father referred to as “Public Life.”

Growing up as “Judge Marsh’s son” in the 1950s and early 1960s, Jack was schooled about personal responsibility, accountability and consequences. Jack learned about significant societal issues, about justice and about the legal system during many family discussions and by frequently accompanying his father to court on days off from school. Father and son developed a shared interest in government affairs, politics, current events and the watchdog role of newspapers.

By his mid-teens, Jack was contemplating two career paths, either law or journalism.

With support of his father and encouragement of a “newspaperman” who was a family friend, Jack chose journalism.

Jack became a high school correspondent for the Niagara Falls Gazette, where later he was a newsroom summer intern for three years. Jack then had a reporter internship at the Chicago Daily News

the year before earning a B.A. in government from Baldwin-Wallace University, Berea, Ohio.

After graduation, Jack joined the Rochester, N.Y., Times-Union, where he was a reporter and an editor for 11 years. He moved to Utica, N.Y., to become managing editor and then executive editor of the Daily Press and the Observer-Dispatch for nine years. Jack was publisher of the Daily Journal and president of Times Graphics, a commercial printing company in Vineland, N.J., for two years before moving to Sioux Falls in 1992. Jack was executive editor of the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls for nearly six years and an employee of the Gannett Co. for 27 years.

In fall 1998, Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth and CEO Charles Overby hired Jack at the Freedom Forum and its Newseum affiliate, where Jack held various executive roles for 16 years.

From 1998 to 2001, Jack was director of the Newseum’s NewsCapade, a Freedom Forum mobile exhibit that visited all 50 states to promote a better understanding between the news media and the public.

Jack is married to his college sweetheart, Betty Poreda Marsh, a retired school counselor. They have two daughters and sons-in-law: Dr. Elizabeth Jensen and Matthew Jensen; Colleen Olson and Drake Olson. Their seven grandchildren are: Libby, Claire and Muriel Jensen; John, Ainsley, Broderick and Brooks Olson.

IMPACTING THE LIVES OF NEARLY EVERY SOUTH DAKOTAN THROUGH PHILANTHROPY

Theologian, police officer, paramedic, firefighter, trustee, husband and father: these are the many titles, vocations and advocations of Walter Panzirer. What he is, above all else, is a servant who spends his life sharing his talents and treasures with others; those gifts will affect lives for generations.

Born on December 23, 1976 in Los Angeles, California, Walter’s early childhood and education was much like many kids of the era.

Looking toward the future, it became clear that improving lives and saving lives was a top priority. That desire led Walter to a theme of continual learning and improving in service.

The lifesaving began when Walter became a paramedic and firefighter in California.

Walter’s thirst for knowledge brought him to South Dakota where he studied business and history at Black Hills State University.

His call to duty remained strong and that led to more posts as a police officer in Sturgis

and Mitchell, South Dakota. While working in law enforcement in Mitchell, Walter felt a higher calling, so he began pastoral studies at MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Walter would have been content spending his life serving as a police officer and saving lives as a paramedic, firefighter or a pastor, but fate led another calling; a calling that has impacted the lives of nearly all South Dakotans. When Walter’s grandmother, hotel magnate Leona Helmsley passed away, she named Walter one of five trustees of the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, who were tasked with improving lives by creating programs funded by the Helmsley fortune. Walter had to make the difficult decision of continuing his career path or honoring the wishes of his late grandmother.

He chose the Trust.

Walter’s collective experience in a variety of vocations and life situations told him there

was a great disparity in healthcare, between people who live in rural communities and those who live in cities in the upper Midwest. Simply put, it seemed a zip-code could determine whether a patient lived or died. Walter wanted to level the playing field.

Armed with research that South Dakota and its neighboring states were among the lowest philanthropic funded healthcare states in the nation, Helmsley Trust dollars could make a tremendous impact almost immediately.

The Rural Healthcare Program for the Helmsley Charitable Trust was conceived, built and operationalized under Walter’s direction. The program could have been based anywhere, but Walter knew in his heart that South Dakota should be home to the program.

As a trustee, Walter does not simply issue checks to worthy recipients, he determines the greatest needs, then conceptualizes a plan to create a partnership that best benefits all.

Walter is a hands-on visionary who has funded over $120 million in SD through the Trust with lifesaving and life-changing technology, workforce, and training. It is safe to say that virtually every person in South Dakota has been personally affected by the generous, lifesaving and lifeimproving programs developed by Walter Panzirer.

South Dakota is a much better place because of his giving spirit and dedication to collaborative philanthropy and initiatives that largely lessen the gap between rural patients and top-quality medical

care. In oncology, with major gifts to the Avera’s Prairie Center in Sioux Falls and the Helmsley Center in Pierre, SD and other gifts to smaller facilities, all South Dakotans are now within an hour of digital mammography and within ninety minutes to comprehensive cancer care.

Every first responder, EMT and ambulance in South Dakota carry the latest, cutting-edge technology like AEDs, mechanical CPR and lifesaving devices for cardiac and stroke due to Walter’s vision and generosity.

Among the most impactful investments for Walter and the Helmsley Trust is telemedicine.

Over a decade ago, Walter learned of Avera’s innovative and aspirational approach and he knew that funding from the Trust was needed to accomplish the mission.

Ten years later and investments of over $100m, Avera is now seen as the gold-standard with its suite of eCare services and is used in more than thirty states in America. Walter was and remains a guiding force in pioneering telemedicine.

Walter Panzirer’s mark on South Dakota is immense, but his humility would tell you that he is just a regular guy who wanted to make a difference. He acknowledges good fortune, blessings and partnerships as major reasons that he has been able to accomplish so much, and he is not done yet. Chief among those partners is Walter’s wife Tina, who as been an equal partner in all his endeavors. Walter, Tina and their five children call South Dakota home and they still return to their ranch and hunting lodge in rural Sully County.

LOOKING BEYOND WHAT IS AND PURSUING WHAT COULD BE

Former Sen. Larry Pressler, a Rhodes Scholar with a law degree from Harvard, served two combat tours in Vietnam and spent 22 years in Congress, including 18 in the U.S. Senate, where he chaired the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committees.

At heart, though, the Humboldt native remains a farm kid who loves Class B basketball and knows how it feels to sleep on straw in the State Fair’s 4-H barn. For more than two decades in Congress, his focus, always, was on helping the people of South Dakota.

After his election to the Senate, he wrote a book, “U.S. Senators from the Prairie.’’

Researching the lives of past South Dakota senators prompted Pressler to model his career after Sens. Richard F. Pettigrew and Peter Norbeck, both of whom devoted their service to improving their home state and its

people. “I wanted to be a senator for South Dakota,’’ Pressler said. And he was.

His work on the Telecommunications Act involved efforts to bring fiber-optic cable to South Dakota, giving residents of farms, ranches and small towns access to the Internet and connections to the rest of the world, a critical advancement for rural communities.

Think, for example, how South Dakota school children would have struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 without distance learning capabilities.

Pressler’s early 4-H experiences (he has a photo with President Kennedy, whom he

met because of his work as an allAmerican 4-H member) influenced his Senate efforts to increase funding for county agents and assistant agents, enhancing 4-H clubs across the state.

Pressler secured aid for projects in every South Dakota county. He championed funding for research and professorial staffing at South Dakota colleges, and he played a key role in starting Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown and enhancing programs at Mitchell Technical Institute. When Yankton College struggled, Pressler helped find a replacement, a federal prison that continues to operate today.

Pressler entered politics in 1974, running for Congress during the post-Watergate reform era. When he first reached the U.S. House of Representatives the next year, he quickly became known for his aggressive service to constituents back home. He participated in hundreds of meetings annually in counties across South Dakota and made it a commitment to meet each year with leaders of Native American tribes in the state. In fact, he devoted one staff member’s full time to working on Native American

issues and problems.

Pressler’s advocacy was essential to the creation and growth of the D, M&E Railroad, a vital transportation link that serves such various entities as the cement plant in Rapid City, bentonite plants in Belle Fourche and grain and ethanol operations across the state. A rail connection in Rapid City, “Pressler Junction,’’ recognizes his efforts, without which rail service might not exist in the state today.

Pressler also played a key role in improvements to visitor safety and convenience at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, particularly on the highway leading from Keystone and the memorial. Throughout his career he worked on programs and projects to assure air service to South Dakota and on numerous projects that benefited Ellsworth Air Force Base. He helped to create the Earth Resources Observation and Science Data Center (EROS), a national archive of remotely sensed images of Earth’s land surface near Sioux Falls. From his first years in the House, he worked on projects to move Missouri River water to communities both West River and East River.

All of those things he did for South Dakota while maintaining a national presence. He is famously remembered as the senator who couldn’t be bribed during the FBI sting called ABSCAM. He briefly ran for president in 1980, focusing his campaign on Vietnam veterans’ issues. After the Senate, Pressler remained active in state and national issues, lecturing at universities across the country and around the globe. He serves on the Jericho Project’s Veteran Homeless Advisory Council, which has recently opened two homeless facilities for veterans in the Bronx and Harlem.

Pressler and his wife, Harriet, have a daughter, Laura, and four grandchildren: Addison, Bethany, Julia, and Ryan. He divides his time between his farm in South Dakota and Washington, D. C. and still follows Men & Women’s Class B basketball in South Dakota. He played for the old Humbledt Eagles Basketball (now West Central).

CHAMPION FOR THE WOMEN OF SD DURING THE WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT

Mary (Mamie) Shields Pyle was born in 1866.

She moved to Dakota Territory as a young girl and worked as a schoolteacher in Brookings and Hand counties. In 1889, she moved to Huron with her husband, John Pyle. John died in 1902, leaving Mrs. Pyle at age 36 with 4 children (John, May, Nellie, and Gladys) and little money.

Since 1868, suffragists had been working towards securing the right to vote for women. Multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to pass a women’s suffrage provision when this area was part of Dakota Territory. An unsuccessful effort was made to include a women’s suffrage provision in the original constitution for the State of South Dakota. And after becoming a state, three statewide votes were held trying to amend the constitution to add a women’s suffrage provision. All these efforts were unsuccessful.

After the woman's suffrage amendment was defeated in South Dakota in 1910, Mrs. Pyle was elected president of the South Dakota Universal Franchise League. As president of the Franchise League, Mrs. Pyle successfully lobbied the South Dakota legislature to pass a women’s suffrage amendment three times and place it on the state-wide ballot for ratification. She made several changes to the League’s strategy—most importantly delinking the suffrage movement from prohibition.

Additionally, instead of having district organizers, Mrs. Pyle implemented county leaders. The county leaders were responsible for finding township workers. Under this method, every household in South Dakota was contacted by someone locally who was committed to suffrage. During that period, the most persuasive argument against woman suffrage was that some women were opposed to having the right to vote. To counter this

argument, the League under Mrs. Pyle’s direction organized countyby-county petition drives. In 1918, 95% of the women in South Dakota to whom a suffrage petition was presented signed it, indicating they were willing to assume the responsibility of being voters. The League then printed and mailed the signed petitions, along with two suffrage pamphlets, to each voter in each county.

Along with these efforts, Mrs. Pyle traveled the state giving speeches, writing about suffrage for newspapers, raising money, and recruiting volunteers in each county and township in South Dakota. On November 6, 1918, the Citizenship Amendment passed with 64% of the vote cast, and the disenfranchisement of half of the citizens of South Dakota ended. Mrs. Pyle, with the help of many others, was able to successfully complete a 50-year effort so all women across the state of South Dakota could vote in all South Dakota elections, as well as run for and hold public office. Women today are still able to benefit from the efforts of Mrs. Pyle and the early suffragists.

When voters passed the amendment in 1918, South Dakota became the 15th state to grant women the right to vote. Two years later, again with Mrs. Pyle’s assistance, South Dakota became the 21st state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, making women full citizens with the right to vote and hold government office.

Mrs. Pyle gained national recognition as a result of the victory. In 1915 and 1917, she was a delegate to the National Suffrage Convention in Washington, D.C., and in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1919.

On February 16, 1920, she was placed on the Honor Roll of the National Woman Suffrage Association for her distinguished service to the cause of Woman Suffrage in America.

She served on the College Board of Trustees for Huron College for 45 years, a college that she and her husband had helped establish. She earned the South Dakota Mother of the Year honor in 1947, recognizing her homemaking and child rearing philosophy. Her daughter, Gladys Pyle, used the rights her mother had fought for and was elected by South Dakota voters as the first female member of the state House of Representatives and the United States Senate.

Mrs. Pyle died in 1949, following an extended illness. The Pyle family home in Huron has been turned into a museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

She was one of the first women to become a presidential elector in 1921.
