WHO MAY NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL? Anyone may nominate an individual, living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Self-nomination is not permitted, and those currently serving on the South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors or its staff are not permitted to nominate individuals.

WHO MAY BE NOMINATED? Nominees must have resided in South Dakota during their lifetime. The nominee must exemplify the meaning of excellence, demonstrating qualifications, attributes, and achievements in the selected category that are exemplary and distinguished.

WHAT FIELDS ARE ELIGIBLE? To showcase South Dakota’s finest, we accept nominations in six broad categories to cover any area of accomplishment. The following are general descriptions of each category: AGRICULTURE includes all aspects of agriculture.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT encompasses actors and actresses, film, photography, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, communications including radio and television.

GENERAL includes fields such as education, military, politics, and religion.

HISTORICAL includes those who contribute to the fabric and culture of South Dakota.

PROFESSIONAL includes professionals such as business leaders, scientists, inventors, technology experts, medical professionals and pioneers, legal experts, researchers, philanthropists, and others.

SPORTS includes athletes, coaches, and others.

SELECTION The South Dakota Hall of Fame board members will review all timely and complete nominations.

Each year, up to ten individuals whose nominating application best represents the achievement of excellence will be selected. The selection criteria for excellence is based on the information provided within the nomination for an individual’s statewide contributions, outstanding leadership, achievement in their chosen category, their skill development, and growth.

NOTIFICATION Individuals selected for induction will be notified in writing. Honorees will also be announced in public press releases and on the Hall’s website.

RECOGNITION Inductees receive recognition at the annual Honors Ceremony held each September, on the Hall’s website and in various publications.

REUBEN BAREIS CHANGING THE COURSE FOR ELDERLY CAREGIVING

orn in Great Bend, Kansas, on February 29, 1928 (Leap Day), Reuben entered this world as a novelty. His parents, Rev. Reuben and Lydia Bareis, went on to provide a brother, Robert, 14 months later. Sadly, Lydia died suddenly when Reuben was only three. Reuben and his brother then lived with their paternal grandparents on a farm in Eastern Missouri. That time spent with grandparents led to both Reuben and Robert developing a love for the elderly and their care, leading to their working as physicians and involvement with nursing homes. A stepmother, Caroline, and half-sister, Janet, later joined the Bareis family.

Seasonal allergies meant a move to Colorado, where Reuben worked in a grocery/meat market in high school during WWII years and earned a tuition-paid scholarship to the University of Colorado in Boulder where he won several honors and awards. During school, he worked culinary jobs to cover room and board. This hard work and perseverance paid off when he graduated

from CU Medical School in Denver in 1952. There he met his future wife, Marloe Polson. After a year’s internship at Madigan Army Hospital near Tacoma, and a year in Korea at a Battalion Aid Station, they were married on September 12, 1954.

Reuben continued his medical training in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan until 1957, when he was invited to join the Dawley-Kegaries Clinic in Rapid City, and so began his 62 years of South Dakota living.

Dr. Donald Kegaries suggested joining the local Rotary Club as a way of getting involved in the community. Since 1958, Reuben has been actively involved with this organization and its outreach, including Storybook Island, and international visitation. Exchange programs with other Rotarians enriched the lives of all of the Bareis family, and many of those travelers are still in contact with Reuben today.

After ten years with the Clinic, he, with Drs. Robert Johnson and Streeter Shining, formed the Internal Medicine Group which attracted

much-needed sub-specialists to Rapid City. This clinic endured almost 30 years, surviving the flood of 1972. It later joined the University Physicians in 1995.

Reuben’s interest in nursing homes was piqued while visiting patients in Marie Sheldon’s Home—the only privately-operated nursing home in Rapid City in the 1950s. Over the next 25 years, he encouraged six more facilities to be opened, plus, after a prolonged struggle, Westhills Village (WHV), a continuing care facility, developed by a group of First Presbyterian Church (FPC) members.

He became Medical Director of three of these facilities, and as a Clinical Professor of Medicine, he joined Dr. David Sandvik’s team to teach personnel working in the geriatric field.

Reuben was involved in numerous professional endeavors and associations.

The local three hospitals, the Ft. Meade VA Hospital, the Rehabilitation Center, the SD Tuberculosis Clinic, alcohol recovery, and the BH Arthritis Association, all benefited from Reuben’s expertise. Reuben shared his knowledge on Medical Ethics, Palliative Care, and

other topics with medical personnel, medical students from the University of SD, and the general public. He supported the legalization of Durable Power of Attorney, Living Wills, and Comfort One legislation.

During a three-month Bush Fellowship in the British Isles in 1987, Reuben was introduced to the hospice concept, visiting his first hospice house.

He observed different practices in the areas of geriatrics and medical directorship.

OVER THE NEXT 25 YEARS, HE ENCOURAGED SIX MORE FACILITIES TO BE OPENED. Reuben was also president of the SD Society of Internal Medicine and the BH Medical Society, and Governor of the SD Chapter of the American College of Physicians.

Reuben has been involved with

numerous religious and cultural organizations. A long- time member of FPC, he has sung in the choir, became an Elder, and continued with Sunday School and Bible studies. He and Marloe were frequent supporters of the BH Playhouse (Reuben is an honorary Board member), local theater, music, and other artistic endeavors. Reuben sang in the Shrine of Democracy chorus and was a member of the Catalyst Club and Chamber of Commerce. He received the Good Neighbor Award in 1985.

When retired, and while caring for his wife, Marloe, he has written or edited several books, including Compassionate Caregivers, a history of the local nursing home industry, which honors the caregivers working in the trenches.

At WHV, where he now resides, he has joined the Toastmaster’s Club, Writer’s Club, Caregiver’s Group, Village Voices, and Bible and Book Club. His beloved Marloe passed away in 2016.

Today, Reuben continues to stay involved with Rotary, church, writing, and activities at WHV, as well as the lives of his children—Anne, Paul, Steve, Jean— their spouses, and seven grandchildren.

What they have in common is their pursuit and achievements of excellence. Their induction into the Hall of Fame is just the first step in honoring and sharing what they have accomplished. Their stories are archived, digitized and shared through the Hall’s unique programs to serve as inspiration and motivation, especially in helping young people understand their potential.

ony Bour was the oldest of four children of Anthony & Miriam Bour.

Nicknamed “Young Tony,” he was born on Friday the 13th, August 1937, in St. Paul, MN. Tony’s dad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, a World War II bomber pilot, an aircraft mechanic, an industrial arts school teacher in a boy’s prison after the war, and an active member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Commemorative Air Force. Tony’s grandfather was a cabinet maker. Young Tony inherited his love of building things from his father and grandfather.

Tony’s first paying job was setting pins in a bowling alley, and at ten cents a game, Tony could make five dollars on a good night.

In 1955, through an industrial arts program in his senior year in high school, Tony was able to work afternoons in an aircraft factory in St. Paul, MN. After graduation, he stayed on with Champion Aircraft for 11 years. It was there he learned to love flying, and most of all, manufacturing.

In 1966, Tony decided to make a career-

changing move from aircraft manufacturing to cabinet manufacturing, and for over 50 decades he has worked for four different cabinet manufacturing companies, three of which he started by building new plants and hiring and training new employees.

In 1979, Tony moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and with the financial resources of five friends, Tony arranged to build his second new cabinet manufacturing plant and start Starmark, Inc. In 1989, to provide an exit strategy for the original five outside investors, Starmark was sold to Masco, Inc., (a multinational conglomerate, with three other separate cabinet manufacturing divisions). As President and CEO, Tony and his team grew the Starmark division of Masco from $20 million in sales to over $76 million. In the fall of 1996, Tony’s boss of seven years suddenly died, and in April of 1997, Tony’s new boss decided to fire him. Tony had a two year non-compete contract with Masco/Starmark and he decided to make a career change when a door opened and he walked into the world of selling commercial real estate.

Tony’s venture into the brokerage world of commercial real estate didn’t last too long. In the winter of 1999, as Tony’s “non-compete” with Masco/ Starmark was running out, Tony started to think again about getting back into cabinet manufacturing. He heard that two of his old friends at Starmark were fired and third had quit. Tony reached out to the trio, and this was the genesis of what would become Showplace Wood Products, Inc. The three ex-Starmark managers and Tony knew other Starmark people that they wanted to have join them in their new company. The initial

Tony engineered the ownership of the company, and worked to provide the necessary financing with banks, investors, and the State of South Dakota REDI Fund. The new venture required personal loan guarantees

from all of them and a million-dollar life insurance policy on Tony.

The first Showplace plant was built in Harrisburg, SD. Tony says it was “built on a handshake,” with and by Gil Haugan Construction Co. in the fall and winter of 1999 to 2000. The first cabinets rolled off the assembly lines in March of 2001.

Today, Showplace has over 600 employees in three manufacturing facilities, with over 300,000 square feet of plant space in South Dakota. Since 1999, the company has manufactured over 2.5 million cabinets in South Dakota. Showplace has five companyowned stores and over 700 independent dealers throughout the United States.

In 2006, Tony and the original owner-investors in Showplace made the decision to transition the ownership of the company to the employees of Showplace through the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP. After one year of employment,

a Showplace employee receives shares of the company stock for just working for the company. Each year thereafter, additional shares of stock are given to each employee. When an employee retires or leaves the company, the shares of stock are bought back from the employee.

Tony has retired from the day to day business of managing Showplace, but he continues involvement as chairman of the board of directors.

The personal side of Tony’s life is perhaps just as interesting as the professional side. Tony and his wife Lorraine have a blended family with seven daughters, three sons, and eighteen grandchildren. Summers are spent on “Honey-Do Lists”, family gatherings, and working on fundraising activities which include South Dakota Salutes, the Boy Scout Shootout, McCrossan’s Boys Ranch Foundation, and NAMI-Sioux Falls.

The community of Faulkton invited an Australian artist, Guido van Helten, to use a local grain elevator as a giant canvas to showcase artwork visible for miles around. One town official says “the sky is the limit for the tourism boost” the massive mural could provide.

12-year-old Bria Neff is using her talent as an artist and passion for the welfare of animals to raise awareness of the plight of endangered species on the planet. She has raised more than $13,000 through her organization Faces of the Endangered.

Rapid City Regional Airport is going green in an environmentally conscious way. Working with the SD Mines, the airport is creating a rooftop that is filled with small plants. The green roof helps save water, reduce storm run-off, and reduce heating and cooling costs.

W

hen one talks to Dick Brown, there is obvious evidence of optimism, curiosity, passion for family, pride in his Norwegian and Irish heritage, love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and music and a strong sense of humor. One also quickly recognizes a compassionate rationalism that seeks to solve problems and take action to make things better.

A fifth generation South Dakotan, Richard Ellsworth “Dick” Brown was raised in Dell Rapids, the fourth of five children of Ellsworth and Catherine Briley Brown where family culture included involvement and leadership in all areas of one’s life. From the sod hut homestead built north of Sioux Falls in 1873, Dick’s greatgrandfather, Erick Berdahl, became a leader in the development of Edison Township and was elected to the South Dakota Legislature in 1892.

The Norwegian pioneer experience of the Berdahl family was inspiration for relative Ole Rolvaag’s classic novel Giants in the Earth.

Dick’s love of the outdoors was instilled

by his father, a recognized statewide wildlife conservation leader. His mother, a homemaker, encouraged education and service and was the first woman president of the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and civic leader. Dick and his wife of over 50 years, Sue Brown, a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee, have passed down their values of service and leadership to their three children: Matt Brown, a circuit court judge in Rapid City, Terra Reynolds, an attorney with an international firm and past assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago and Jeni Briley Holloway, a forensic therapist in Minneapolis. Dick and Sue are proud grandparents to seven grandchildren.

Dick received undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science at the University of South Dakota under the tutelage of Dr. William O. “Doc” Farber. A lifelong friend, mentor and matchmaker, Dick credits Doc Farber for giving him the philosophy to “Think of the Possibilities”.

In 1967, Dick pursued PhD studies in political science and also worked for US Senator Karl E. Mundt in Washington DC. He went on to be

Executive Director of the ten-state Missouri River Basin Commission in Omaha. In 1979, he and Sue relocated to his beloved South Dakota as Executive VP of the Sioux Falls Downtown Development Corporation. His business career included decades as General Agent for Lutheran Brotherhood (Thrivent), and Regional VP of Wells Fargo.

His leadership style of inclusiveness, humor and collective decision-making led others to elect him as chair or president of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, Sioux Empire United Way, the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary Club, SD Water Congress, SD Fraternal Congress and Black Hills National Forest Advisory Board. Other organizations that benefited from his leadership are Arts South Dakota, SD Humanities Council, Senator Karl Mundt Foundation, USD Foundation and USD Farber Fund, among others. His love of music and singing is evident in his years with the El Riad Shriner’s Chorus in Sioux Falls and Harmony in the House Quartet while serving in the legislature.

His impact on the state is evident in his work as a State Legislator and as a Commissioner of the SD Game, Fish and Parks. While in the Legislature, Dick served as chair of the Education and Taxation Committees and received many awards for his legislative leadership. Instead of retirement, when the couple moved to Custer in 2008 to be near family, Dick and Sue became Development Directors of

They raised more than $15,000,000 in private dollars to create public assets such as Outdoor Campuses in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, Good Earth State Park, Mickelson Trail, Custer State Park Visitor Center and the Peter Norbeck

Outdoor Education Center. Dick’s work at fundraising has been so singularly effective that he has been enticed out of retirement twice since December of 2017 to raise over $1,600,000 for an expansion of Palisades State Park north of Sioux Falls.

Whether as a husband, a father, grandfather, brother, elected or appointed official or volunteer, he measures his success by inspiring or making changes that improve the lives of others. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been changed in some way by him, from Good Earth State Park to economic development which created jobs to legislation that saved lives. As Governor Dennis Daugaard says in his 2017 Proclamation honoring Dick Brown, “all for the betterment of life in the State of South Dakota.”

J

ohn Calvin is a hard-charging, relentless business executive, advisor to four South Dakota governors, philanthropist and loyal friend. A Michigan native, the Ringneck pheasant first enticed him to South Dakota in 1962.

An innovator, he served as a key executive in national industries following his graduation from the University of Michigan.

In 1964, John went to work for Lockheed Martin for nearly 22 years. He held several executive positions in the cement lime division, residing in Connecticut, Virginia and Florida.

He later became President of Dyna Technology, a company based in Sioux City, IA, with plants in Iowa, California and Michigan. In 1984, he purchased Palm Industries in Litchfield, MN. In 1987, Gov. George Mickelson convinced

him to move his company to Watertown by offering him the state’s first “REDI” loan. That started a relationship between John and the highest levels of South Dakota’s government as he became a key business advisor to governors, U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives.

John succeeded not only because of his business acumen, but because of his commitment to his employees. Loyalty and integrity are his hallmark. “If you work hard for me, I’ll work hard for you,” he said.

He included his employees in the ownership of his company, Angus Palm Industries, allowing them to reap financial rewards when it ultimately was sold to a larger corporation. John became committed to helping others because early in his life someone helped him at a YMCA. He never forgot that the state of South Dakota helped him

move his company to Watertown.

He helped pay for his employees to learn new skills at Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI), often covering the cost of childcare. When an employee’s daughter broke her leg, he went to the hospital and paid the medical bill up front as the employee did not have the resources.

After selling his company in 1996, John created J. Scott Industries and focused on helping new businesses grow and serving governors as an economic advisor, ambassador and mentor to recruit and nurture new business.

In 2006, Gov. Mike Rounds asked him to manage a huge new department of state agencies. Rounds knew John had the skills to be the first Secretary of Tourism, State Development, Tribal Government Relations, Arts Council, State Historical Society and Housing Development Authority.

“He is a strong, quiet leader who builds coalitions, puts employees first and works tirelessly to help others,” Rounds said.

Former Gov. Bill Janklow in 2003 when Rounds named John to the newly

created department said that John “has 5,000 pounds of enthusiasm. He’s bright, he understands business, he knows what South Dakota is looking for.”

Former Gov. Dennis Daugaard later appointed John to the state’s Board of Economic Development. “John is a man with a generous heart, a mind for business, and a willingness to serve,” Daugaard said. “He has helped many businesses find their home in South Dakota, and many students find success in our state.”

John and his wife Prudy particularly are supportive of LATI, having been honorary chairs of the school’s capital campaigns to expand facilities. They also have sponsored many scholarships.

He also helped encourage one of our nation’s top young wildlife artists, Josh Spies, to pursue his dreams. In a Nov. 25, 1999, story in the Watertown Public Opinion, Spies said he was nervous about telling his parents he wanted to be an artist. Spies said Calvin told him, “If you think you can do it, then do it.” Spies said Calvin “gave me the confidence to tell my dad and mom.”

His advice to Spies squares with his

general philosophy.

“When a guy’s got fire in his belly, he should square his shoulders back and take his best shot at what he wants to do,” John said in that story.

John was recruited to serve on the Prairie Lakes Healthcare System’s board of directors helping the northeastern South Dakota hospital grow significantly and add cancer, cardiology, pulmonology and other specialties in the past 15 years Largely unseen is he and his wife’s broad philanthropy from supporting the arts, funding technology for students and helping build Joy Ranch, a Watertown area camp for special needs children.

John has one daughter and two sons. He is active in Masonry. He holds the highest Scottish Rite honor of the 33rd Degree Masonry and the highest York Right honor as Patron of the Red Cross of Constantine.

He is a member of the Watertown, SD Community Hall of Fame as well as the Bay City Michigan Hall of Fame.

A lover of books and poetry, John is best described as a “bulldozer” who plants “white roses.”

HELEN DUHAMEL TRAILBLAZER FOR WOMEN IN BROADCASTING

T

he 1929 stock market crash marked the onset of the Great Depression. The 1930s were a difficult time for women who typically held domestic roles.

This is the setting for a high schooleducated Nebraska girl and newlywed living in Rapid City, to turn around a family business she had married into, and to start building what would become a South Dakota broadcasting empire.

Helen Seidell Duhamel was born Nov. 26, 1904, in Windsor, Missouri, and raised on a Nebraska ranch on the White River north of Chadron. In 1920 Helen moved with her mother to Rapid City to run a boarding house.

Helen graduated from Rapid City High School in 1922–her last “formal” education. Although Helen’s father paid for her older brothers to go to

college, he flatly denied Helen when she asked for financial support. He thought it a ‘waste of good money’ for women to go to college. Helen was gifted in math, so she took a job as a bookkeeper and continued her education by reading business magazines.

In 1924, Helen married Bud Duhamel moving into the domestic role of homemaker and mother of small children. The trifecta of the Depression, Drought and ‘Dirty Thirties’ changed everything.

The Duhamel Company was struggling because customers ‘put it on the tab’ and were unable to pay their bills. The Company wrote off over $500,000 in uncollectible receivables in 1933.

The company was in technical default because it was unable to make the full mortgage payments to the bank.

Her father-in-law, Alex Duhamel, then asked Helen to use her business smarts as a bookkeeper to keep the family from losing the Duhamel store and building. When Helen took over, the first thing she did was abolish credit. She sublet the departments to the managers.

She transformed the first floor of the Duhamel Building into small street-front rentals and eventually secured a lease from the government for the upstairs.

The changes enabled the family to make at least partial payments to the bank.

Helen saved the Duhamel Company from the brink of bankruptcy! By 1937 the company was out of debt and she had bought out the rest of the family.

One of Helen’s keys in reestablishing the Duhamel Trading Post was advertising. While operating the business, she came to recognize the power of broadcasting as an advertiser on the local radio station KOBH (‘Kall of the Black Hills’) which came into existence in 1936. In 1943 Helen bought a minority interest in KOBH. By 1953 the radio station was still losing money and the other stockholders intended to sell their shares to an investor from Chicago.

Helen offered $50,000 more than the offer on the table in order to keep local ownership of Rapid City’s only radio station, by then called KOTA – ‘’golden call letters that remain today.

In the early 50s, Rapid City’s “city fathers” gathered to discuss a looming scourge on society. Helen was the only woman invited to the meeting. They met to find a way to keep television out of western South Dakota. Helen stood up at the meeting of men and told them if they wanted so much to keep TV out of Rapid City, then it must be “a damn good thing.” Helen flew to Washington DC in 1954 and filed for a broadcast television license. It would be the first in western South Dakota–only the second in South Dakota.

Over the next 25 years, Helen defined KOTA Territory by adding television stations and technologically challenging miles of microwave paths

On May 30, 1955, KOTA-TV signed on and brought video for the first time to western South Dakota. Helen expanded “KOTA Territory’ to the Nebraska Panhandle in 1958, the northern Black Hills in 1966 and in 1977 to Sheridan-Gillette, WY. Since television signals travel by

line of sight from the tower, there was a viewing problem for many Black Hills communities. In 1966 Helen joined Joe Floyd (of KELO fame) as an equal partner in South Dakota Cable to bring cable television to eight Black Hills towns.

This tall, outspoken woman built a regional broadcasting empire at a time when few women worked outside the home. In 1961, Helen was elected president of the South Dakota Broadcasters Association, the first woman to run any state broadcasting organization in the United States.

Helen died in November 1991 at the age of 86.

lyde was born on September 24, 1955 in Rolla, ND to Don and Amy Fredrickson, joining a brother Terry and a sister Judy. They lived on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Belcourt, ND where Don worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Amy was a cook at the hospital. Don’s career took them to Crow Agency, MT, Winnebago Agency, NE, and then Aberdeen, SD, where Clyde graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1973. He had several years of carpentry experience working alongside his father on evenings, weekends, and summers doing repairs and remodeling. Clyde had completed several remodeling projects on his own by the time he graduated from High School.

He then attended Lake Area Vocational Technical School where he prepared for a career in auto mechanics. He had acquired his love for cars while admiring his older brother and the cars that he had. He continued to work evenings, weekends, and summers doing carpentry work saving money for education. It was during this time that he met

the love of his life, Sharon.

Sharon and Clyde married in January, 1975 and became proud parents to their daughter Melissa later that year. Struggling to support their young families, he joined his brother and started Fredrickson Construction, doing what they knew best, carpentry. A chance meeting with a family acquaintance led them to Britton, where they had the opportunity to build their first house. That work led to many other jobs in the area. In the fall of 1975, Clyde convinced Sharon they should move to Britton, “for the winter”. They remain in Britton to this day.

After a few years of building houses, Terry and Clyde wanted a place to work during bad weather, so a small shop was discussed. Visiting with their father about the idea, Don introduced them to John and Marge Kraft. Soon afterward, a new partnership was formed with Don, Terry, Clyde, and John with the intent to build and sell metal plate connected roof trusses, a fairly new product to the housing industry. Clyde continued to build houses while John and Terry went to work

full time for the new company.

The business proved to be more than they had anticipated and quickly outgrew their expectations. Clyde started working full time at Truss Pros and took on the role of production and equipment manager while Terry and John handled the sales, accounting, and business management. This was a young company, growing rapidly, with very little startup capital. All they could afford was used equipment. Clyde spent much of his time repairing and modifying this equipment with skills that he had gained while attending Lake Area Tech and from working on cars.

The computer age and architectural designs changed the roof lines of houses, and trusses became more complicated.

Building trusses became more time consuming since often, more time was spent changing the truss jigging fixtures than actually building the trusses. A solution was needed to remain profitable. There were products on the market, but all had serious flaws. Clyde set about designing something new that would work. Using experience, advice and ideas from partners and co-workers, a solution was born, a patent was obtained in 2005, and a new business

That product achieved a stunning level of success and remains in production today. There are over 500 of these systems in use in 43 US States and 6 Canadian provinces. In 2013 that business was sold, ending a partnership that lasted over 35 years. For the first time in his life, Clyde had a job working for someone else, at the age of 58! He continued to manage that division until recently having been named as the Product Development Manager for a new, worldwide automation division for MiTek Industries. Clyde is also a named co-inventor on another machine he and his nephew, Drew Fredrickson, designed.

Early hobbies were building model cars and building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He won several

prizes for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. He loved car racing and drag racing became his passion.

He acquired many event wins and class championships. He installed and maintained a complex timing system for a Minnesota drag strip, and from 1995 to 2005 he was a co-owner/operator of that track. At the age of 50, he earned his pilot license and since then has earned an instrument and multi-engine ratings.

He plays too much golf, and volunteers his time helping to improve the Britton Golf Course. He was elected as Mayor of Britton, SD in 2013 and remains the Mayor today.

W

illiam McAndrew (Bill) Groethe was born on South Dakota Day, November 2nd 1923, and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota during the great depression. Bill worked very hard from a young age, and has chosen to dedicate his life to documenting regional historical events and scenery. People are sometimes surprised that he still works at 96 years old, but anyone who has truly interacted with him understands that his work is never finished.

Work includes community-minded decisions about his business, like donating works to public institutions like the Rapid City Airport and Oglala Lakota College. Bill remains dedicated to an equitable Rapid City, a value modeled from his parents Emma and Amos Groethe. As a businessman who has employed many, he believes in hiring people of all races, religions, sexes, and classes, and pays all workers a fair wage for their labor. He started his own business in 1956, after working for Bell Studio photography since the

age of 12, and serving as a photo reconnaissance technician for the Army Air Corps in World War II. Besides love of his work, Bill’s motive is historical. Preserving significant moments has been his primary concern beyond photo finishing.

In addition to photographing famous Lakota leaders such as Nicholas Black Elk and the Akicita survivors of the Battle of the Greasy Grass, (the Battle of the Little Bighorn), at their reunion in 1948, Bill has photographed many of the local and national political leaders of the US as they move through the Black Hills. He has photographed the presidential visits of both George Bushes, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Barack Obama. He also photographed Governor Mickelson and numerous senators and congress people of South Dakota. In April of 1996, Senator Tom Daschle invited Bill and Alice to an honoring ceremony in Washington D.C. to recognize his work in the Smithsonian archives.

In 1938, Bill photographed black Olympian Jesse Owens as he visited Rapid City. Owens is arguably one of the most famous Olympic runners

in history and was an inspiring figure for young Bill. In addition to portraiture, he excels at landscape photography and capturing the mood of the Black Hills and surrounding areas.

Some of his most iconic and popular works are from the area near Pine Ridge and the Badlands photographing the Black Elk Lakota moons, including the Moon of the Ripe Cherries, probably his most famous shot. All ten of these photographs have taken years to achieve, since Bill does not use filters in his work, the lighting from sunset to cloud cover has to be perfect. Part of Bill’s acclaim derives from his consistent quality and purposefulness with his film photography.

As many have commented on, the photo business has changed significantly since Bill first began printing. Despite these changes, Bill has maintained relevancy and has kept up with the changing needs of commercial printing through digital technologies. You may be surprised to know that he understands more about iPhone technology than most people in their 20’s. Even though he realizes the significance of digital printing, he still prefers printing with photochemistry and argues for the higher quality of film. The reason for this is due to the test of time, not arbitrary bias. His most famous landscapes have not faded even though they were printed over 30 years ago, and older prints retain as much detail as they did even 70+ years later. This is certainly not the case with digital or scanned prints—not only do they contain much less detail and

Because of Bill’s commitment to high quality images and to preserving memories for many years to come, it becomes easy to see why film is his medium of choice and what he most often recommends to customers, friends, and relatives.

Bill highly values his family, and has been married to Alice for over 65 years.

They met skiing in Colorado, and built a home together in Rapid City. They opened up a photo printing studio in the basement of their new home, later moving business downtown and opening multiple locations to meet demand.

Despite these demands on his time, Bill always prioritizes invaluable quality time with his children Jane and Mark, and their families. He shares his hopeful outlook with everyone he encounters; his seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren appreciate his good humor and loving energy. This is the same power that he has brought to his life of giving and learning in South Dakota.

im received what family members describe as “the best possible start in life.’’ He was born on December 28, 1946, in Canton, South Dakota. His father, Van Johnson, taught chemistry and coached football at Canton High School, and his mother, Ruth, devoted her life to creating a love-filled home.

Tim graduated high school in Vermillion and received B.A., M.A., and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of South Dakota. Most importantly, he met Barbara Brooks from Sioux Falls on campus. They married and have shared a lifetime of dreams and goals.

In 1977, Tim told Barbara he had been asked to run for the state House of Representatives.

With two young children, she tried to talk him out

of it. The fire of service burned strong in Tim’s heart and she relented, saying he could “run for election until he lost.’’ Tim was a winner, and that first campaign set up a public service career like few others.

During his first term, he earned a reputation as a hard worker, a good listener and a bit of a policy wonk. He served two terms in the state House and in 1982, he ran for the state Senate and won.

Tim recognized early on that anyone who wanted to understand government priorities needed to know where the money was being spent. The passing of the first Domestic Violence legislation that funded shelters and support for victims highlighted his legislative service in South Dakota.

In 1986, Tim was elected to the state’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his first term in Congress, he authored and passed more legislation than any other freshman member.

Tim went on to work tirelessly in Congress for South Dakota’s needs.

The state desperately needed clean, dependable sources of water, and Tim made water projects a priority throughout his career.

In 2005, when a federal commission targeted Ellsworth Air Force Base for closure, Tim joined the congressional delegation and governor’s office to ensure that the base would remain open. In the years after that, he helped strengthen the base infrastructure to assure that Ellsworth would remain a highly valued asset.

Tim was an advocate for Native Americans — securing funds for housing, medical care, clean water, schools, infrastructure, and education. He also procured millions of dollars for valueadded agriculture. He was a leader for ‘Country-of-Origin’ labeling of meat products, as well as a lead author of the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Unfortunately, Tim’s greatest challenge came on December 13, 2006, when he suffered a massive brain bleed.

The doctors told Tim’s family that he might not wake up from the medicallyinduced coma. Tim did wake up, but then they thought it was unlikely that he would walk again. Defying the odds and relying on outstanding medical care, he survived and began to recover. In rehab, he exhausted his therapists — pushing

Although he would face physical and speech challenges for the rest of his life, his spirit was undaunted.

Upon his return to the Senate, Tim gave a speech on the Senate floor thanking his colleagues for their support during his absence. In a rare bipartisan show of support for their friend, nearly every seat was filled.

Tim was elected to his third term in the Senate in 2008 and was appointed to be Chairman of the powerful Banking Committee, where he strove to balance the needs of large and small banks.

As chairman, he crafted the public transportation bill to reflect the needs of rural areas. The bill increased rural funding from $10 million to $13.8 million.

In 2013, Tim announced that he would not seek a fourth term saying, “It is time for me to say good-bye.” He returned to South Dakota to enjoy his well-earned retirement with Barbara, their three children, and eight grandchildren.

It’s hard to believe Tim almost didn’t run for public office the first time he was asked. His ultimate decision to seek a seat in the House as a Democrat was very fortunate, to say the least, for South Dakota and the entire Nation.

Tim’s affable manner and thoughtful approach to solving problems, along with his ability to work with people regardless of political or other affiliations, resulted in policies and initiatives that improved the lives of millions.

Former U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, whose lifetime of public service earned him the Lakota name Wacante Ognake (Has a heart for many people). Tim has a heart for many people, indeed.

yndell Petersen was born on the Fourth of July in 1931, but he claims that’s not his fault; he was simply an innocent bystander. Lyndell hung out with his parents while his father farmed and his mother taught school. Lyndell and his sisters became quite good at moving across the dry and dusty countryside when their father decided to go to work for the railroad. The railroad put them in Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming and finally Quinn, South Dakota, where Lyndell graduated from high school. Lyndell had dreams of being a rancher and spending hours at a time on horseback, but his father had a different dream, so Lyndell went to South Dakota State University and graduated with a degree in Animal Science and an Alpha Zeta pin.

Lyndell moved to Minnesota where he taught classes in agricultural practices and principles to veterans returning from WWII. He married Audrey Burkhead and together they had three children, son Dell and daughters, Estelle and Drucilla. Lyndell worked for South Dakota State University’s Extension Service and over the

next 23 years gained insight into the reality of agricultural economics and the culture of those born to an earth-bound way of life.

Tragically, Lyndell’s wife and two daughters were victims of the 1972 Rapid City flood and it seemed the sun had gone from his life. Lyndell’s son and friends like Dick and Gladys Bray, along with his commitment to the agricultural community of Pennington County, helped Lyndell survive the numbing emptiness he felt during that time.

In 1976, Lyndell had a growing frustration with the inequities and inadequacies of state law related to agricultural producers and was prompted to seek public office. With the approval, but not an endorsement, of both the Brookings administration and the local extension board, Lyndell took leave from his job to serve as a state senator. During this time Lyndell remarried and for the next 18 years his wife, Jill and two sonsDell and Ken, held down the fort at home while he went to work in Pierre.

The legislative process is a vibrant, often capricious thing far removed from the dusty

definitions of middle school civics.

Some say Lyndell had a skill for it, but he says the truth is less mysterious. His measuring stick for proposed legislation was like a mantra: Where did it come from? Who does it serve? What will it cost? The variety of people he met, situations faced, and the needs he felt had to be served, led Lyndell to become a member in many groups and boards of directors.

He served on 11 of the Legislature’s 13 standing committees, and on the Appropriations Committee for eight years. During his time in Pierre, Lyndell chaired the Legislative Research Council’s Executive Board for one term and the Local Government Committee for nine years.

After retiring from the Extension Service, Lyndell bought a ranch, some

commercial cattle, and was finally able to live his dream. The ranch was on Lower Spring Creek where it’s headquarters, an 1885 house that was slated for demolition. Lyndell and Jill restored the house which is now their home and is also listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. They switched to Corriente cattle, an athletic mediumsized animal favored by team ropers and never looked back. They raised the National Champion Roping Steer, twice and like ranchers everywhere, had calves warming in the house, bottle babies, and late-night phone calls that the cows were out. It was great. In his spare time, Lyndell has learned how to make arrowheads, leatherwork, and sculptures. He is grateful for his life, family and friends and the opportunity to make a difference.

HALL OF FAME BUDGET INFORMATION The annual budget for the Hall’s programming is approximately $380,000. The South Dakota Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 corporation, able to accept tax-deductible and tax-advantaged donations.

Programming is funded through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, an annual fundraising campaign with the Honors Ceremony, Exhibits, Legends and Learning Sponsorships, and Endowment Interest. Planned giving and bequests will be an important piece of sustainability for programming costs.

JAMES SCULL CONSTRUCTION GROUNDBREAKER AND COMMUNITY BUILDER

ames L. Scull, Jr. was born in Kadoka, SD, being the closest hospital to White River, on September 10, 1950. The Scull family started their South Dakota roots in White River, SD, when James’ grandfather Josiah Scull homesteaded there in the early 1900s. White River was the early childhood home of Jimmy, as he was known in his youth by family and friends, and was also the community where both of his parents grew up and graduated from high school In 1953, Jim’s family moved to Rapid City.

With the exception of his US Army military service, which included a year tour during the Vietnam War, and a brief time working for Firestone Rubber and Tire in Akron, Ohio following his graduation from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City has always been home to Jim. Nine months into his first career job in Ohio, Jim quickly realized that it was not in his heart to live anywhere other than in the Black Hills of South Dakota. With no serious job opportunities

nor any ideas as to how he would make a living to support his young family, Jim came home with not much more than an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong work ethic.

Upon arrival in Rapid City, Jim decided to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and entered the carpentry trade. He soon became aware that he was a better estimator and business manager than carpenter, and he was quickly asked to become a 50 percent partner in a small local construction firm. Jim had no startup funds to offer, therefore he relied on his abilities with numbers, a strong work ethic, and innate ability for the construction business and people management to bring value to the partnership.

He soon was the managing partner of quickly expanding, successful startup construction business in western South Dakota.

Seven years later, in 1985, relying on his success in construction and his ability to lead people, it was natural for him to start the venture of Scull Construction. The success of Scull Construction led to the startup of many

more construction related businesses and a score of commercial and residential development ventures.

These would include a high voltage substation contracting company, an asbestos removal company, a site work construction company, and many more startups and entrepreneurial projects.

Scull Construction is the cornerstone of success for Jim and still continues to be. It has evolved into one of the largest construction companies in South Dakota, and also includes an office in Dickinson, North Dakota, with work in a five state region that employs over 300 people.

Jim has always had an immense passion for giving back to the construction industry and to causes that inspire him. As a past president of South Dakota Associated General Contractors, Jim has always been dedicated to helping the construction industry. Scull Construction has done so by helping teach the AGC apprenticeship program for many years in western SD, and regularly contributes to workforce development, safety initiatives, and improvements in the industry statewide.

Jim’s success as a businessman and his love of community, coupled with his giving spirit, has led him to be named the South Dakota Philanthropist of the year, the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce George award winner, along with Scull Construction being named the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Granite award winner. His passion and work with youth, Native American programs, and conservation

JIM HAS ALWAYS HAD AN IMMENSE PASSION FOR GIVING BACK TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND TO CAUSES THAT INSPIRE HIM. issues has led to helping many others find success. During his career, he has served on numerous boards for the state and community. He is currently the vice chairman and a founder of Rapid City Collective Impact’s “OneHeart” Campus; founder and president of South Dakota Youth Hunting Adventures; and ongoing contributor to the Nature Conservancy, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Pheasants Forever, Safari Club

International, Mule Deer Foundation, and Black Hills Sportsmen. He was recently selected to the state’s Second Century Habitat Fund by Kristi Noem.

All of Jim’s non-business ventures will truly be a cornerstone to his legacy.

In addition to his work in the community, family is also very important to Jim. He has been married for 34 years to Mary. They have two children and six grandchildren living in Rapid City and ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old. They are quite proud that both of their children have master’s degrees in their respective interests– Andy in construction engineering technology and Ami in higher education administration.

Andy is currently an owner and operates Scull Construction, while Ami is now a stay at home mom with three small children after a successful consulting career at several major universities.

Join our South Dakota Hall of Fame Endowment Campaign!

Our goal is $3 million. Pledges received are close to the tipping point of $2.5 million from donations of $25,000 to $300,000!

Today, SDHOF employees focus the majority of their time on raising dollars annually versus marketing the successes of the Hall of Fame Inductees or promoting our other programs.

By achieving the Endowment Campaign goal, we will put the priorities where they should be.

• Ask that contributions be directed to the Fund in the name of a deceased loved one in lieu of flowers • Designate that a memorial gift in honor of others be placed in the Fund • Include a bequest to the Fund in your will • Designate the Fund as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy

The inductees have given their time, talent and resources to immeasurably influence South Dakota. As a state, we owe it to them to highlight their contributions and build on their legacy.

The SD Hall of Fame staff and board want to help you understand ways of giving that extend beyond cash donations.

There are many options and a wide scope of possibilities that empower you to consider long-term stewardship to the Hall of Fame. With a lifetime of giving, you can support and invest in championing a culture of excellence in South Dakota.
