Meet the 2019 Hall of Fame Inductees CHANGING THE COURSE FOR ELDERLY CAREGIVING
REUBEN BAREIS RAPID CITY, SD
When Dr. Bareis relocated to Rapid City in 1957, only a single care facility for the elderly existed. Reuben is one of the original board members and helped break ground at Westhills Village Retirement Community in 1984. Six more facilities eventually followed, and Dr. Bareis served as medical director of three of them. His work continues to influence South Dakota in this critical care need.

Over the course of his career spanning 50 years, Tony Bour has been the guiding influence behind establishing South Dakota as a national leader in the cabinet-making industry. As founder and CEO of Showplace Wood Products, Tony led the company to become the third most nationally distributed cabinet maker.

A native of Dell Rapids and USD Political Science alumnus, Dick Brown left for Washington, D.C. in 1967 for doctoral studies and to work for U.S. Senator Karl Mundt. He then went on to lead the ten-state Missouri River Basin Commission in Omaha. In 1979, he returned to his beloved South Dakota where his impact has been felt statewide.

Senator Tim Johnson has been a prominent elected official in South Dakota for 36 years. Before retiring in 2015, he served terms in the S.D. House of Representatives, the S.D. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate. During his tenure in office, Tim made an impact in virtually every community, county and corner of the state, which will benefit South Dakotans for many years to come.

TRAILBLAZER FOR WOMEN IN BROADCASTING Few people had more impact in the 20th century on women in the South Dakota broadcasting industry than Helen Duhamel. Against daunting financial odds, gender bias, and the relatively small population, Helen blazed a trail in radio and television broadcasting and then cable transmission in the Black Hills.
Over many decades, beginning in the 1930s, Bill photographed the construction of Mt. Rushmore, the Lakota holy man Nicholas Black Elk, and the last eight survivors of the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps where he served in World War II as a photo reconnaissance technician. Bill has operated his commercial photography business since 1956.

AMBASSADOR OF SOUTH DAKOTA BUSINESS John Calvin is a hard-charging, relentless business executive, philanthropist and loyal friend. A Michigan native, the ring-necked pheasant first enticed him to South Dakota in 1962. In 1987, Governor George Mickelson convinced him to move his company from Minnesota to Watertown by offering him the state’s first ‘REDI’ loan. Calvin later created J. Scott Industries and served four governors as an economic advisor, ambassador, and mentor to recruit and nurture new business.
Clyde Fredrickson, an inventor, businessman, and community leader, is a pioneer in automation and prefabrication of construction materials. His inventions, which influenced over 80% of the truss manufacturing industry, revolutionized the home building process around the world by saving time andmoney for every house built with his system.
Described by Dave Bryant, former Dean of Agriculture as a “man of towering integrity”, Lyndell Petersen has championed agricultural producers over the span of almost 36 years and spoke out on their behalf in the face of bureaucratic inefficiency and government overreach. He served 18 years in the South Dakota Senate and six years as a commissioner for Pennington County.

Coming from a family of contractors and craftsmen, Jim Scull has extensive experience in the commercial construction industry. He currently serves as the CEO of Scull Construction Service, Inc., and has been involved in multiple real estate and volunteer efforts during the course of his career.

The Cowboy and Western Heritage Hall of Fame was established and the first Western Weekend celebration was held.
The organizational headquarters moved to the city of Chamberlain for greater statewide visibility & impact.
The organization was officially renamed as the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

The South Dakota Hall of Fame started in 1974 to recognize and honor people in South Dakota for their histories in building our heritage. Our mission is to Build a Culture of Excellence in South Dakota, and we believe this mission will provide young people with the tools to chase their dreams.

HALL of FAME HISTORY
Responding to opportunity and providing new technology to central South Dakota are the hallmarks of Venture Communications since its beginning in 1952. Today, the company now serves over 30 communities across a broad expanse of our State. In recognition of its breadth of services, the members voted to change the name in 2002 to Venture Communications, reflecting a commitment to the opportunity that communications technology provides.
1992
In 1992, SDN opened the Sioux Falls office with nine employees. As data and Internet traffic started using the telephone network, SDN’s network expanded. Today, the 17 owner companies, simply called Members, serve 80 percent of South Dakota’s geography. The network now touches more than 300 communities within South Dakota and eight states and offers connectivity to other regional and national networks.

Since 1952, when Midstate Communications was incorporated as a telephone membership cooperative, we have proudly serviced the communication needs of central South Dakota with state of the art telecommunications technology and services. Headquartered in Kimball, SD, Midstate currently services nearly 5000 access lines in eleven (11) exchanges throughout central SD.

Nicholas Black Elk: Legacy of Cultural Excellence The teachings and life of Nicholas Black Elk bridge the religious traditions of his native ancestors and Christianity. A Lakota and a Catholic holy man, he created an awareness of the sacredness of Lakota spirituality during a time of oppression. His wisdom continues to inspire people of all backgrounds. While still a child, he had his first vision from Wakháŋ Tháŋka, the Great Spirit. In a dream he was taken to a sacred mountain now called Black Elk Peak and entrusted with revered objects. He was told to shield the Lakota circle of life, or the “sacred hoop.” These gifts and experience were the foundation of his teachings. As a young warrior, Black Elk fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Later, he witnessed the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre, a memory which haunted him throughout his life. Yet, powerful, sacred visions formed a profound understanding of humanity, a deep respect for nature, and a desire to bring cultures together. Nicholas Black Elk died in 1950 and is buried in Manderson, South Dakota in the Pine Ridge Reservation. This exhibit was developed with the assistance of his great-great-grandson, Myron Pourier who is also the President of the newly formed Nicholas Black Elk Charitable Foundation.

THE MAKING & MEANING OF
South Dakota Hall of Fame Education and Visitor Center Designated as the Permanent Collection for the Statue of Dignity
The statue Dignity stands 50 feet tall on the Missouri River bluffs in Chamberlain. During the 2017 Honors Ceremony, the permanent exhibit — telling the story of Dignity — opened at the Hall. Norm (Inductee 2010) and Eunabel McKie funded the statue and commissioned Artist, Dale Lamphere (Inductee 1987) to design and construct the statue. Dignity honors the Lakota and Dakota Native American cultures — creating unity in conversations about our people and its landscapes.

12-year-old Bria Neff is using her talent as an artist and passion for the welfare of animals to raise awareness of the plight of endangered species on the planet.
Rapid City Regional Airport is working with the SD Mines to create a green roof that helps save water, reduce storm run-off, and lower heating and cooling costs.
The community of Faulkton invited an Australian artist, Guido van Helten, to use a local grain elevator as a giant canvas to showcase artwork visible for miles around.

MISS SOUTH DAKOTA: MORE THAN A CROWN Originating in 1946, Miss South Dakota has been wearing the crown for 73 years and the pageant is now in the newly constructed Performing Arts Center on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings! Participants have gone on to achieve major success in diverse fields including medicine, law, business, journalism, theater, politics, literature and more. The Miss South Dakota competition is an official preliminary for the Miss America competition, the nation’s leading achievement program and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women.
Participation in this program provides young women with the opportunity to promote a platform of community service, share their talents, intelligence, and positive values while serving as role models in their communities, all with the support of dedicated volunteers assisting them in their pursuit of academic excellence, service and lifelong success. The Mission Statement of the Miss South Dakota scholarship program is to uphold the four points of the crown: Service, Scholarship, Success and Style.

To support our young women who devote a year of service promoting the Miss South Dakota Scholarship Program. Their year of service provides them the forum to share not only their platform and their talent, but the opportunity to express their views on local, regional, national and global issues.
