John Thomas Porter was born and raised in Pierre, SD, where his parents operated a small office supply and equipment business. Having grown up in the state’s capital city and the seat of state government, he developed an interest in political science and law. The middle of three sons in the family, he also loved outdoor activities like hunting and fishing along the beautiful Missouri River valley.
Raised with a strong work ethic, John worked in road construction during the summers between his high school terms, and then pursued an undergraduate degree at the University of South Dakota, majoring in political science with minors in multiple subjects – history, math and sociology – simply because he found interest in all those areas. He graduated Cum Laude in 1971.
In 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Penny Lathem from Hayes, SD. When John received a scholarship to go on to law school at USD, Penny helped him through by working as a nurse in Vermillion.
In the summer of 1973 – a year before earning his law degree in 1974 – John interned at a firm in Yankton, where he was first introduced to legal work for the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, SD, and Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, SD, whose health ministry would later comprise virtually his entire career.
member of the Board of Editors of the South Dakota Law Review. After graduation and a short military obligation, John began working for the law firm Doyle, Bierle and Hagerty in Yankton. Don Bierle served as legal counsel for the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters, and he brought John alongside him as a staff attorney for the Sisters. John later progressed to associate general counsel for the Sisters.
In the latter 1970s, John helped set up the corporate structure for the Presentation Health System. He was among a group who collaborated to make management decisions for the facilities – sometimes meeting for three days straight. They formed what became the Presentation Health System – the first Catholic health system in the area. Later, as legal counsel for the Benedictines, he was involved in setting up the Benedictine Health System corporate structure.
In 1984, John was named Executive Vice President for the Presentation Health System. When a Sister who held the top leadership role stepped down in 1989, John was named President of the system that included McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, and Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT, as well as three nursing homes.
In the 1990s, the two orders began in earnest to discuss the idea of joint sponsorship rather than join the large Catholic health systems that were forming nationwide. John facilitated
the process as both religious orders came together in an innovative co-sponsorship model, and in 1998 he was named President and CEO of the newly formed Avera Health.
Under John’s leadership, Avera has grown from 13 hospitals and nursing homes into a fully integrated continuum of care comprised of hospitals, clinics, long-term care centers, retirement communities, home care, hospice, sports and fitness centers, home medical equipment, health insurance, telemedicine and more. Today Avera has 300 locations in 100 communities and five states. As an early architect of change, John championed Avera’s model of partnerships and led Avera to invest in new facilities and programs in a number of communities, strengthening local health care and allowing people to receive quality care close to home.
During his extraordinary tenure, John has been a faithful steward and keeper of the Avera mission, allowing it to flourish. Even as a lifelong Protestant, John made the health ministry of the Sisters his own personal ministry and paved the way for all 17,000 employees to participate in the ministry.
He understands well how state and federal policy is changed and has a keen ability to predict the success of various policy initiatives. John’s broad view of health care has allowed Avera to be among national leaders in terms of creating an integrated delivery network. The Avera organization has become a direct reflection of the health care needs of South Dakota’s citizens – much more than a hospital system that owns some clinics.
John has shared his experience and expertise by serving on state health care advisory councils, and on the boards of the South Dakota Community Foundation, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement and more. He has also served in numerous roles for the Catholic Health Association and American Hospital Association.
Throughout their marriage, John and Penny have lived in Vermillion, Yankton and Sioux Falls, SD, and they enjoy vacationing in the Black Hills. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren, who also make their home in South Dakota. John retired from Avera in 2018 after 44 years of service to Avera and its predecessor organizations.

MAKING A GIFT TO THE ENDOWMENT FUND Give a one-time gift or gifts pledged over a number of years Ask that contributions be directed to the Fund in the name of a deceased loved one in lieu of flowers Designate that a memorial gift in honor of others be placed in the Fund Include a bequest to the Fund in your will Designate the Fund as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy

The inductees have given their time, talent and resources to immeasurably influence South Dakota. As a state, we owe it to them to highlight their contributions and build on their legacy.
The SD Hall of Fame staff and board want to help you understand ways of giving that extend beyond cash donations. There are many options and a wide scope of possibilities that empower you to consider long-term stewardship to the Hall of Fame. With a lifetime of giving, you can support and invest in championing a culture of excellence in South Dakota.
AUTOMATIC CONTRIBUTIONS Make an automatic monthly contribution to the SD Hall of Fame. Gifts are accepted by credit card, automatic bank transfer, by mail, by phone, or online at sdexcellence.org.
TRANSFERS OF APPRECIATED PROPERTY Take advantage of the tax benefits that come your way when you give securities, real estate, vehicles or other property. Proceeds from the sale of these assets will benefit the SD Hall of Fame for years to come.
BEQUESTS Consider leaving a legacy to the SD Hall of Fame in your will. Bequests help your heirs by providing estate tax savings. You can enjoy the knowledge that you have made a contribution to your community without compromising your current financial situation.
CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY, REMAINDER TRUST If you have an individual pension plan, IRA, or retirement plan, consider stipulating in your will that those funds will go to the SD Hall of Fame. A gift annuity or remainder trust provides a fixed, guaranteed cash flow and substantial tax benefits. At the same time, it makes a substantial contribution to the SD Hall of Fame's future.
REMAINDER INTEREST FOLLOWING LIFE ESTATE If you have real property that you want to donate to the SD Hall of Fame, but want to retain the right to continue living in the property, this plan will work for you. AN ENDOWMENT FOR ONGOING SUPPORT A strong Endowment Fund at the Hall of Fame will ensure a flourishing future. Interest and earnings from the endowment can supplement income for programming. The Endowment Fund, established in 1991, is managed by the South Dakota Community Foundation.
