The South Dakota Hall of Fame Board Members will review all timely and complete nominations.

Each year, up to ten individuals whose nominating application best represents the achievement of excellence will be selected. The selection criteria for excellence is based on the information provided within the nomination for an individual’s statewide contributions, outstanding leadership, achievement in their chosen category, their skill development, and growth.

Notification Individuals selected for induction will be notified in writing. Honorees will also be announced in public press releases and on the Hall’s website.

Recognition Inductees receive recognition at the annual Honors Ceremony held each September, on the Hall’s website and in various publications.

Who may nominate an individual?

Anyone may nominate an individual, living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Self-nomination is not permitted, and those currently serving on the South Dakota Hall of Fame Board of Directors or its staff are not permitted to nominate individuals.

Who may be nominated?

Nominees must have resided in South Dakota during their lifetime. The nominee must exemplify the meaning of excellence, demonstrating qualifications, attributes, and achievements in the selected category that are exemplary and distinguished.

What fields of accomplishment are eligible?

To showcase South Dakota’s finest, we accept nominations in six broad categories to cover any area of accomplishment. The following are general descriptions of each category: AGRICULTURE — Includes all aspects of agriculture ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT — Encompasses actors and actresses, film, photography, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, communications including radio and television, etc.

CLEVELAND ABBOTT 1892 - 1955

South Dakota African-American Firsts Cleveland “Cleve” Abbott lived, believed and taught these words he spoke in 1924: “To learn self-control is another great philosophy of the adage, ‘Him whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad,’ the success of any team and the prowess of any player depend upon the ability to keep cool under fire and the control of temper.”

Imagine being a black child in the early 1900’s. What chance would you likely have to create changes now taken for granted in the world of international sports. Cleve Abbott was raised in a time of real and perceived cultural disadvantages able to stop many. A strong South Dakota character, combined with natural abilities, took him to the world stage, making it a better place for all of us.

Cleve Abbott was a true South Dakotan to his core. A man of few words who instead used challenges to prove principled action creates success. He took his athletic prowess and South Dakota public education to create his own path to excellence.

Cleve’s parents, Albert B. Abbott and Mollie Brown, were married in 1890 in Alabama and by the time Cleve was born on December 19, 1894, they were living in Yankton, SD. The family grew to seven children by the time the move was made to Watertown, where Cleve’s mother died in 1909.

Young Cleve was raised at a time when most sons would have followed their father to become a stone mason. He instead combined sports and education to build citizens of character and strength for a stronger nation.

He trained his mind like he trained his body. Cleve was among the first black South Dakotans to graduate from a public high school and college while excelling in sports. He graduated from Watertown High School and South Dakota State, earning a combined total of 30 varsity letters covering football, basketball (team captain), baseball, track and tennis.

Considering the social and legal tenor of the day, these accolades would have been life highlights but Cleve was just getting started.

Cleve’s college academic record combined with athletic ability was brought to the attention of Booker T. Washington, founder of the historically black college in Alabama, the Tuskegee Institute. While searching for a man of color to combine integrity, scholarship and athleticism to transform the stature and place in American society for his students, he had a 1913 chance encounter with South Dakota State president Ellwood Perisho, and Abbott received a graduation job offer.

Cleve accepted the challenge to build an athletic program at Tuskegee when his dairy science degree was earned.

In 1916, Cleve showed up for work at the Tuskegee Institute as an agricultural instructor and coach. Soon WWI interrupted his career, and he reported for active military duty. Cleve went on to become a respected Army intelligence officer and leader of men in France.

At the conclusion of the war, he continued his education in Kansas and then Harvard. He joined the faculty at Kansas Vocational School in Topeka, Kansas, serving as coach and Commandant of Cadets.

Abbott was asked to return to Alabama in 1923 to be the eighth head football coach for the Tuskegee Institute Golden Tigers, for 32 seasons until 1954. His accumulated record still ranks first at the school in total wins, fifth in winning percentage (.661) amounting to 202 wins, 97 losses and 27 ties including six undefeated seasons, topped by six college football national championships. The stadium he personally helped build was renamed in his honor.

According to his wife Jessie, Cleve’s responsibilities as Director of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics allowed them to create model programs designed not only for black men and women to excel, but all students in America. His efforts to help women brought to the world stage the first black woman, Alice Coachman, to earn a 1948 Olympic Gold Medal.

Cleveland and Jessie did not experience the challenges of southern segregation growing up. Like most early immigrant South Dakotans, they showed a prairie toughness able to persevere with an acceptance of challenges to create success.

Efforts to bring out the excellence in everyone was based on their ability to be involved in all aspects of community.

Tuskegee was a platform to create opportunities showcasing talents previously ignored because of skin color.

Cleve became the first person of color to be a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1946. There is a long list of excellence awards given during his life and his early death in 1955 has not stopped them. Cleve Abbott’s induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2018 is an honor he would humbly have accepted as a means to highlight his students and their achievements – not him.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE

NICHOLAS BLACK ELK 1863 - 1950

Native American Evolutionist Black Elk, the great Lakota spiritual healer, was born into the Oglala Lakota tribe of the Great Sioux Nation in December 1863 near the Little Powder River, in what is now the state of Wyoming.

His life as a spiritualist was foretold in a dream he had as a nine-year-old while he lay in a coma, gravely ill. In this vision he was taken by spirits into the clouds to meet with spiritual powers which he called grandfathers; these represented the six directions: North, South, East, West, earth and sky. These grandfathers gave him sacred objects representing each of the directions and the responsibility of maintaining their circle of life, which he called the "sacred hoop."

In the dream he was taken to what is now known as Black Elk Peak, which he described as the Center of the World; and from this vantage, he viewed the entire world, the two-legged, the four-legged, the winged ones, and those that swim. Then he saw his people were all dying; but when he rode through them he took the bright red stick, and at the center of the nation's hoop, he thrust it into the earth, saving them all.

The gifts he received from the spirits were the foundation for his teachings, which have been studied and praised by such intellectuals as Karl Jung and other philosophers, spiritualists, and mystics.

In the course of his growing up, his tribe experienced the opening of the Bozeman Trail which cut across the heart of

their best hunting grounds and fomented the Red Cloud’s War – the Lakota’s greatest victory over the US military, which abandoned its forts along the Trail. This defeat forced the US to sue for peace leading to the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, which established the Great Sioux Reservation to include most of western South Dakota, and vast tracts in eastern Montana, western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. What followed were years of devastation in which the 1868 Treaty was repeatedly broken as White pioneers scattered from the Oregon/ California Trails and began settling on Indian lands. Then the bison herds were hunted to near extinction in order to fill the insatiable demand for leather belting to drive new machinery in America’s Industrial Revolution back East, to feed crews of railroad workers and miners, and, not least in importance, to destroy the Indians’ food source as a means of subjugating them.

There was a massive build-up of a frontier army to ostensibly keep the peace between the Indians and white intruders on their lands. And in 1874, on a reconnaissance into the Black Hills, Custer’s troops discovered gold. Words spread immediately and a new mass incursion of prospectors and entrepreneurs ensued. This invasion into their most sacred area caused the Sioux and other tribes to prepare for possible warfare.

The Sioux rejected offers by the US Government to purchase the Black Hills, and new pressures were applied to force them to concede. What followed led to the most famous rout of the US military in the history of the West at the Little Big Horn on June 25th, 1876. At age thirteen, Black Elk participated in the action, as was expected of Lakota youth. A year later, young Black Elk learned of the death of his father’s cousin, Lakota Chief Crazy Horse. When Black Elk was eighteen, he went on his first vision quest where divine spirits reminded him of the duties of his first vision. By then, however, the practice of traditional religious ceremony or healing were forbidden by law.

In 1886, Black Elk signed on to travel with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show to Chicago, New York, and Europe performing traditional Lakota dances and battle re-enactments. In 1888, he returned to the reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and found his people worse off than when he left.

The Lakota had endured terrible retribution at the hands of the US government: they were confined to ever-shrinking reservations, and their food sources were destroyed. They were a destitute and desperate people, which led many to embrace the Ghost Dance movement – a religious belief that if they practiced the Ghost Dance, the Whites would disappear and their buffalo herds would return, and they would once again be a great nation.

This movement alarmed the White settlers and the US Government dispatched the Army to put down what they described as a mass Indian insurrection. This culminated in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.

Black Elk saw the horrible scene of the massacre, a sight that would haunt him for life as a precursor to

the fate of the tribe and what he saw as his failure to carry out the mandate of his vision.

In 1902, his wife Katie War Bonnet converted to Catholicism, and upon her death in 1904 he was baptized and chose the name Nicholas. Soon after, he became a Catechist and on reservations in South Dakota Black Elk proselytized, led prayer meetings, and served in the absence of circuit-riding Priests.

Having converted over 400 Indian people, he earned the sobriquet "St. Paul of the Sioux."

Beginning in 1934, Black Elk worked organizing Indian shows in the Black Hills. Unlike the Wild West shows which glorified warfare between Indians and the military, Black Elk's shows were used primarily to teach tourists about Lakota culture and traditional sacred rituals.

Nicholas Black Elk died in 1950 and is buried in a simple grave in the village of Manderson on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. His legacy is marked by many honors. In 1999, a panel of experts listed Black Elk Speaks as one of the top ten spiritual books of the twentieth century. The federal government recently renamed Harney Peak as Black Elk Peak.

Internationally, Black Elk is the most famous American Indian of the twentieth century, and almost certainly the world’s most well-known South Dakotan. His life and teachings promote the ongoing ecumenical dialogue between different faiths, particularly Christianity and American Indian spiritual traditions. The Catholic Church has begun the process of canonizing Black Elk. NOMINATED BY CHARLES TRIMBLE

In 1976, at the age of 14, Rod's labor was purchased at a charity auction by Lloyd and Delores Johnstone, then owners of KTCI. Rod continued working for the Johnstones, making his way to a management position at KTCI until 1998, at which time Rod and his family purchased KTCI from Delores Johnstone.

After a year without a local electrician, community leaders asked Bowar to offer the service. He contacted the electrician who left and asked if he would return to do the work if Bowar managed the business. The arrangement worked so well that Bowar has kept three electricians on staff. Similarly, when the local mechanic retired, Rod took over Charley’s Welding and Auto to

Kennebec Telephone might be one of the smaller phone companies in South Dakota, but what owner Rod Bowar contributes to his community dwarfs many corporate efforts. Attracting workers challenges central South Dakota, so Rod actively recruits young people while they are in high school. He offers to pay their technical school tuition if they promise to come back and work for him. Workforce housing threatens the town's future, so he buys and fixes up Kennebec's housing stock as a supply for resale to his recruited employees.

He serves on the town board and has lead the volunteer fire department since he was old enough to qualify. Kennebec Telephone Construction is a member of SDN Communication, which interconnects the state's independent telephone companies, and Rod serves on SDN's Board and chairs the South Dakota Telecommunications Association.

He also serves on the Dakota Prairie Bank Board, Kennebec Town Board, Kennebec Fire Department, Badlands Fire District, Kennebec Clinic Committee, and Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation. Governor Dennis Daugaard appointed him to the South Dakota Board of Technical Education in 2017.

MARILYN HOHM HOYT Huron, SD

Public Service Innovator Marilyn was born in Chicago, Illinois, while her father was in medical school. But she has been a life-long resident of Huron.

She grew up with two younger siblings in a loving and caring family, with parents who lived the lessons of life – honesty, integrity and loyalty – for her to observe and emulate. She watched her father, who was busy doing most of the medical procedures as family practitioners did at that time, often being called away from the supper table or on the weekend to the clinic or the hospital to care for his patients while her mother kept things going at home with their young children.

She watched both of her parents befriend and care with compassion the neighbors and others who may have needed a helping hand, teaching her another lesson of life, to be kind to one another.

from each of the trustees did she accept. She believed her organizational skills could help guide the board forward, but she needed the expertise of the professional members who were her fellow trustees. But six months later, the team faced a $1 million debt and the bankruptcy of the college.

After graduating from the School of Business at the University of South Dakota, Marilyn returned to Huron where she married and started a family, getting involved with her children's activities.

After many meetings, a plan emerged. An entity was secured that was willing to take over the college for $1, but assume none of the debt. The plan involved a citywide campaign to ask voters to extend the one-cent sales tax in order to raise the revenue so the city could purchase the newest building on the campus, the Fine Arts Center, and enter into a net/net lease with the college. In that way, the trustees would be able to have the funds to retire the $1 million debt and the new entity could take over ownership of the college debt free. The hard work of the trustees paid off when the votes were counted.

With a turnout of 51 percent, the highest in 30 years, there was a 70 percent favorable response from the public to extend the sales tax and keep the college alive.

The Hohms were heavily tied to and loyal to Huron College.

At the college's 100th anniversary celebration, they were named the Centennial Family. She grew up singing the college fight song and wearing her dad's letter sweater at all of the basketball games, which set the stage for her loyalty and responsibility to help Huron College. She was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees, and after one year was asked to chair the board. Only after a verbal commitment to the college

As the three-year sales tax extension was nearing an end, Marilyn was asked to co-chair another campaign to retain the one-cent tax to make up for the loss of federal revenue sharing funds, to allow for property tax reduction, to retire bonded indebtedness on the water treatment plant and to purchase needed city equipment. It was evident to her that this needed to happen, especially when voters agreed by approving the extension with an 83 percent approval.

Huron had been trying for years to build a wellness and recreation center, but a stand-alone new building could not be justified. An opportunity to accomplish the goal came when the Huron School District had plans to build a new middle school and the National Guard was planning a new armory. A prominent Huron citizen offered a challenge grant to the community to build a wellness and recreation center, and Marilyn was asked to chair the effort of raising the matching funds. The campaign was successful and the Huron Middle School students now had access to an indoor swimming pool, tennis/basketball court, racket ball courts and weight rooms.

With its central location in South Dakota, Huron has always been a popular destination for state meetings and conventions. The Crossroads Hotel and Convention Center was built by community-minded citizens to help sustain these conventions. While Marilyn was serving as chair of the board for this facility, it became evident that a remodel and update was necessary for the continued viability of the Crossroads. Marilyn led a $2 million renovation of the guest rooms, restaurant and pool area.

By the turn of the century, the convention center at the Crossroads needed more space to host events.

The Huron Arena sits directly across the street from the convention center. Marilyn was appointed by the mayor to head a blue ribbon task force to preside over

the project. The addition of the new Huron Event Center brought more fuel to Huron's economy. After the successful transition of Huron College/University from a church-related institution to the private sector, it remained open for nearly 20 more years, closing in 2005. Marilyn had served on the Board of Trustees during all the changes in ownership, with the exception of the last one. When the university closed, it left a huge void in the community as far as employment and economic issues were concerned.

The mayor's plan to create an educational center and transform the campus into a park called for $4 million to be raised in Huron. Marilyn headed the fundraising effort, which exceeded the goal by $500,000. Huron now boasts a beautiful Central Park with a first-class water park, Splash Central, located in the heart of Huron so children can ride their bikes or walk to swim and play.

Marilyn currently serves on the South Dakota Community Foundation Board, Huron University Foundation Board since 1982, Christen Hohm Lusk Foundation Board, Huron Community Campus Board since 2007, Spirit of Dakota Award Chairman since 2006 and the Nursing Task Force.

Marilyn has resided in her country home for the last 40 years and enjoys the winters in Arizona.

How are South Dakotans elected to the Hall of Fame each year?

Nominations are open to the public at our website, sdexcellence.org, with a deadline of February 1 each year. The Board reviews all nominations in a thorough and serious competitive process. The selections are made by secret ballot. Nominations are considered for three years.

TOM LOVELAND Sioux Falls, SD

Geographic Global Landscape Expert Thomas (Tom) Loveland was a member of the first career-long generation of explorers studying the condition and changes in the Earth from the vantage of space. Joining a new field called geographic remote sensing, he spent over 40 years using imagery obtained from Earth-orbiting satellites to piece together the contemporary land history of the planet while contributing ideas and leadership to expand global Earthobservation capabilities.

His particular passion was understanding land use and land cover change – how the Earth’s lands are used, why some places are changing and others are stable, what causes those changes, and what the consequences of change are for the Earth’s citizens and natural systems.

Growing up in Sioux Falls, Tom was an uninspired student in his teens who preferred to explore the countryside rather than focus on studies. With nothing better to do after finishing high school, he enrolled in South Dakota State University (SDSU), a move that gradually changed his outlook on life. Inspired by geography professor Dr. Ed Hogan at SDSU, Tom discovered a new curiosity for learning and ideas, a love of geography, and a desire to explore and understand a changing world.

A development north of Sioux Falls in the early 1970s provided a focus that ultimately defined Tom’s professional future. In the late 1960s, Stewart Udall, Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, declared his vision to use aerospace technologies and the vantage of space to establish Project EROS,

a program "aimed at gathering facts about the natural resources of the Earth from Earth-orbiting satellites.”

Thanks to strong South Dakota political support and Sioux Falls development community advocacy, a site north of Sioux Falls became the home of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) world-renowned Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. EROS took on stewardship of a series of Earthorbiting satellites named Landsat, and since 1972 built an ongoing, unprecedented global archive of Earth imagery that allows anyone, anywhere, to use Landsat data to objectively understand how and why the Earth has changed – from 1972 through today.

SDSU was already a leader in remote-sensing research and education, and Tom had the opportunity to gain an understanding of the potential of this new field. The newly opened EROS Center gave him summer internships in the early 1970s to gain real experience in remote-sensing research and applications.

After completing BS and MS degrees in geography from SDSU, Tom started his career using Landsat to map land cover and vegetation in support of South Dakota and Arizona state government missions. He joined EROS in 1979 and stayed for most of the remainder of his career, leaving once to complete a PhD in geography and remote sensing at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Tom was a research scientist his entire EROS career, and ended

as the EROS Chief Scientist, providing scientific leadership that ensured that the EROS mission met the needs of scientists, resource managers, and decision makers around the world.

Tom’s career list of research projects literally spanned the globe. He documented land cover and land change in all 50 states and his research provided in-depth understanding of the rates, causes, and consequences of U.S. land change. The results contributed to the management of economic security, environmental health, and natural resources management. He spent several years traveling throughout the northern half of Africa designing and implementing drought monitoring systems that provided early information on issues that affected food security and public wellbeing.

Perhaps his most significant impact was as leader of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme global land cover initiative in which he pioneered the use of remote sensing for global land cover mapping. The results of that effort continue to be used to address global environmental change science questions. His research and leadership defined a key component of USGS geographic research and led to the global recognition of the USGS as a land use and land cover research innovator.

Tom served as an SDSU adjunct professor and taught numerous remote sensing and geography courses over the past 35 years. He also contributed to graduate education in many universities throughout the U.S. and Europe. One of his most satisfying activities was contributing to the establishment of the SDSU-USGS Geospatial Sciences Center of Excellence (GSCE). Established in 2006, Tom served as the USGS co-director for 12 years. GSCE conducts international and in-state research programs aimed at both educating the next generation of remote-sensing scholars, but also investigating major scientific and environmental challenges. The GSCE is a testimony to SDSU’s commitment to research excellence, and the Center has become a world leader in remote sensing and global monitoring scholarship.

Scientific service has also been an important aspect of Tom’s career. For many years, he led the land use and land cover component for the U.S. Global Change Research Program and was an author for two of the congressionally mandated periodic National Climate Assessments, which evaluate climate impacts on U.S. land use and land cover.

His most visible service, arguably with the most lasting impact, was his leadership in advancing the science and applications of the Landsat program. He defined and led the NASA/USGS Landsat Science Team, a group of scientists and engineers from around the world that is dedicated to advancing the use of Earth observations for natural resources management and scientific understanding. Working with NASA, USGS, and U.S. aerospace industry

ANNE RIECK McFARLAND Sioux Falls, SD

Empowering Children & Adults with Disabilities Innovative. Inspiring. Inquisitive. Inclusive. These are just a few of the adjectives used to describe Anne Rieck McFarland, long-time leader and advocate for people with disabilities. It is a life’s work that began by chance with a part-time job at the Aberdeen Adjustment Training Center while Anne attended Northern State College in the 1970’s.

“I grew up on a farm near Warner about 25 miles from Aberdeen,” Anne explains. “Nine guys lived in the group home, and we’d drive them out to the farm about once a week. They just loved it, we all did!”

The farm had much to do with shaping Anne’s character, instincts and work ethic.

“I thought I had a pretty ordinary childhood,” Anne recalls. “But, looking back, it was rather extraordinary. We had certain chores to do at certain ages, and that instilled confidence and the ability to work independently. I learned how to drive a twoton truck before I knew how to do laundry!”

Anne was the third of four children born to Harley and Jean Rieck. While Harley ran the farm, Jean was the school’s Business Manager and rode the school bus to work every day.

It was uncommon in those days for a wife/mother to work outside the home, but Anne and her siblings thought nothing of riding the bus with their mom. To the Rieck family, work was more about capability than gender.

“I have never thought of ‘glass ceilings’ when it comes to my career,” Anne observes. “But that can be a different matter for people with disabilities. It generally comes from a lack of understanding, and that is my wake-up call to educate and inform. I have learned that you can’t lead if nobody is following.”

Anne graduated from Northern in 1977 with a B.A. in Community Services and Early Childhood Development.

Rather than open the small day care business she envisioned when starting college, Anne took her newfound passion to the Mitchell Adjustment Training Center where she was named support person of the year within two years. Career opportunities then took her to Muscatine and Burlington, IA.

By 1987, now married and a mom, Anne was ready to move her family closer to home. She sent a “To Whom It May Concern” letter to Sioux Vocational Services in Sioux Falls, and the rest is history. Anne was hired for her first administrative position focused on development and human resources. She excelled at Sioux Vocational and, in 1996, became the first woman to lead the organization which was rebranded as South Dakota Achieve.

The agency became the first of its kind in South Dakota to be nationally accredited and continues to this day the distinction of holding the longest Council on Quality and Leadership accreditation in the nation.

“I didn’t aspire to the position at the time, but I learned that my gifts lend themselves more toward CEO.” Anne continues, “A few years later, I attended a workshop where I had another a-ha moment. People there didn’t see nonprofits as a credible business, and I found that insulting. We do much of the same work but for a different purpose.”

She set out to change that perception. Anne created a leadership development program at Achieve, something she continues to lead more than two decades later. “Developing people is one of my passions. I believe the greatest gift you can leave behind is people well positioned to use their talents.

The beauty of investing in others has become one of the blessings in my 40 years of service.”

This extends into Anne’s community, too, where she has served on more than two dozen civic and professional boards, continues to mentor young female executives through EmBe’s Women’s Leadership Program, and is a regular panelist for Leadership Sioux Falls and the Young Professionals Network. “I like being in a community where good things happen, where I can give back and contribute in ways that are important to me. A good community allows organizations to do good work.”

South Dakota Achieve merged with Children’s Care Hospital & School in 2014 to create LifeScape, an agency dedicated to empowering children and adults with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Almost 4,000 children, adults and families are supported annually through one of LifeScape’s 13 different service lines.

“The responsibilities and consequences of embarking on LifeScape were riskier than anything I have ever considered,” Anne reflects. “To know that hundreds of lives were being impacted made me stop in my tracks.

We had to put corporate egos on the shelf to focus on what could happen instead of what could go wrong.”

Doing business differently is more than just a buzzword at LifeScape. From that merger came a new leadership team and a model of synergy that Anne says can apply to any nonprofit or for-profit organization.

ROGER MUSICK Mitchell, SD

Communications Hardware & Software Creator Roger was born in Mitchell, SD, to Ira and Maxine Musick. He was the second of four children and grew up in a middle-class family with a hard-working father who drove a truck and mother who worked part time and encouraged education.

Starting in the fifth grade, Roger had two paper routes and earned his own spending money. Roger's uncle, Lyle Storla, was an early mentor who stimulated an interest in electronics, and by the time Roger was in junior high, he knew that he would go to SDSM&T and major in Electrical Engineering.

Roger got his amateur radio license in junior high, and throughout high school, he worked after school at Electronics Supply, rebuilding TV picture tubes and repairing TVs. In high school, Roger passed the First Class FCC license which was required to operate a TV or radio station.

Roger was the first member of his family to attend college, and he paid his own way with his savings. During his time at SDSM&T, he worked part time in Rapid City operating a TV station and a radio station and working at a two-way radio company.

Roger graduated from SDSM&T in 1971 as an electrical engineer. He and almost all those who graduated with him thought they would move to California or Texas and work in the electronics industry. After a couple of interview trips, Roger quickly decided those places had far too many people and too much concrete — he wanted to stay in South Dakota instead. He enrolled in a Master’s program that would start

in the fall to eventually become a consultant, but little did he know that a summer job offer from Doug Martin in his hometown of Mitchell would change all that.

Roger spent the summer helping Doug Martin design telephone systems at Martin and Associates, and at the end of the summer, he decided to stay. It was a perfect position which allowed him to use his engineering degree and further his interest in electronics and new technologies.

In 1974, Martin and Associates was reorganized, and Roger became a professional engineer and equal partner with Doug Martin and Harvey Kelly, and later Keith Bartels. During the 70s, Martin and Associates designed the majority of the communications networks in South Dakota and Iowa, and during the 80s, they deployed hundreds of new digital switches in the Midwest. They also designed the first major state-wide fiber networks in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota which were owned by the independent communications companies.

A life-changing event for Roger was seeing the Altair 8800 kit computer on the cover of Popular Electronics in January of 1975.

The cost was $439, and there was no doubt that he was getting one. Roger spent the next five years learning computers and programming in his spare time. The Altair computer was just a toy, but Roger learned software and in a few years purchased a DEC computer. In the evenings, he wrote a telephone billing system for Midstate Telephone Company. This billing system,

designed before personal computers, used a teletype machine on paper for all input or output. This was the birth of the software division at Martin and Associates which ultimately provided the billing software for about 150 telephone companies and New York Teleport, the largest competitive carrier in the US which sold to AT&T in 1998 for $11.3 billion.

When Martin and Associates was sold in 1999 and most of the partners wanted to retire, Roger wasn’t ready for retirement.

He started Innovative Systems in 1998 and purchased the application peripheral product and a staff of 10 from Martin and Associates.

Deeply rooted in South Dakota, Innovative Systems was organized as a family partnership and has grown to a staff of about 200. The products at Innovative Systems have gradually increased to include the most complete suite of software in the industry to operate a communications company, the most widely-deployed enhanced voice service platform called the APMAX, and a complete IPTV System which is deployed by 150 service providers. Sons Kyle and Kody both have Computer Science degrees from the University of Nebraska and are active in the management of Innovative Systems.

Throughout his career, Roger has maintained an office in Rapid City primarily for providing internships for SDSM&T students with hopes that some of those interns will move to Mitchell. One of Roger's goals has been to create good jobs for engineers who want to stay in South Dakota when they graduate, and today, Innovative Systems employs 47 graduates and interns from SDSM&T, 23 from SDSU, and 22 from DSU. Roger has served multiple terms on various community and state boards such as DWU, MTI, Methodist Hospital, Avera Queen of Peace, Mitchell Area Development, South Dakota State Chamber of Commerce, and the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors. He has also served on numerous Computer Science advisory committees for South Dakota universities and the SD REACH Committee. Roger was very active on the Vision 2000 and Vision 2020 planning organizations for Mitchell, and he was a part of the committee that worked on the presentation when Mitchell was named one of the top 7 Intelligent Communities in the world.

Medical Education Trailblazer When Dr. Rodney Parry retired in 2012 from his position as Dean of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and Vice President of the university’s division of health affairs, many leading officials in the state’s health care community expressed their admiration and gratefulness for his steadfast and skillful service.

became an M.D. degree-granting program in 1974). Parry then completed his M.D. degree at the University of Wisconsin followed by a residency and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1976 Dr. Parry began a practice in pulmonology in Sioux Falls, and he immediately affiliated himself with USD’s medical school as an assistant professor.

Fred Slunecka, COO of Avera Health, lauded Dr. Parry’s contributions to health care. “Thanks to Dr. Parry’s leadership and vision,” said Slunecka, “South Dakota is producing medical school graduates who will serve the state for many years.”

“Dr. Parry’s lasting impact in the region is his dedication to medical education,” explained Dave Link, former Senior Executive Vice President of Sanford Health. Charles Hart, M.D., former President and CEO of Regional Health in Rapid City, added this perspective: “Dr. Parry brought the medical school into the 21st century. He showed the state and the state legislature how important the medical school is to South Dakota.”

As a physician Dr. Parry distinguished himself for his skills, knowledge and compassion. One of South Dakota’s first pulmonologists, Dr. Parry’s work on cystic fibrosis inspired him to help launch and direct South Dakota’s Cystic Fibrosis Center.

He also conceived innovative clinical programs such as South Dakota’s first pulmonary rehabilitation program and its first sleep laboratory, as well as new treatment options for patients.

His research into respiratory diseases and the genetics of asthma aided patients and was published in leading journals.

Dr. Parry’s profound impact on improving health care in South Dakota spanned more than 40 years as a physician-practitioner, scientist, teacher and leader of medical organizations, including, most notably, the state’s only medical school.

After earning a degree in pharmacy from South Dakota State University, Rodney Parry graduated in 1967 from the University of South Dakota’s two-year medical program (the program

Among his investigations was the relationship of lung disease and rural lifestyles, including treating farmers and Hutterites in South Dakota. To increase fellowship, Dr. Parry visited Hutterite colonies frequently, overnighting and sharing meals with colony families. One local Hutterite leader fondly recalled Parry’s genuine interest and friendship, and Parry’s wife, Ruth, noted that her husband grew a beard to demonstrate respect for his new friends.

His relationships with Hutterites led to formalized cultural diversity experiences for USD’s medical students, an enrichment and colony visitation program that continues to be offered by the medical school to its students.

It was under Dr. Parry’s leadership that USD’s medical school established unique and beneficial educational programs that enabled the institution to become one of the nation’s leading producers of rural physicians. Parry also helped create highly relevant and pragmatic curriculum changes that attracted the attention of medical schools across the country, led efforts to build a leading-edge simulation center at the medical school’s Sioux Falls campus, and expanded the school’s scholarship endowment tenfold. All of these pursuits were undertaken to improve opportunities for South Dakotans' interested in receiving a premier medical education in their home state and to fulfill the health care needs of South Dakota residents. Dr. Parry’s successes were noted by the national medical education community. This resulted in his appointment as chair of the American Medical Association’s medical school section.

It can be acknowledged that Dr. Parry’s thoughtful, sustainable stewardship and bold vision elevated USD’s medical school to nationally recognized stature and reputation. It is a standing of prominence that endures to this day, and continues to benefit the state of South Dakota.

His volunteer work extended to community organizations such as the Red Cross, YWCA, United Way, American Cancer Society, and the South Dakota Lung Association.

In 2014, he was named a Master of the American College of Physicians, an honor reserved for the country’s pre-eminent physician-leaders.

Colleagues portray Dr. Parry as humble, highly collaborative, bright and hard-working; traits that seem to logically characterize and follow the evolution of a self-described shy farm kid who grew up near Canistota, South Dakota. Those are Parry’s words, and he uses them to describe not only his boyhood and the man he became, but also a strong attachment to his home region and a desire to make the world he knows best — the source of his roots — a better place. Those who worked with him and for him would agree. They’d also say he had succeeded.

RAYMOND PETERSON Brookings, SD

Mr. South Dakota Performing & Visual Arts A native of the small Kingsbury county town of Oldham, Ray grew up “behind the counter” of Melvin’s Store, a grocery and general merchandise business that his parents, Melvin and Helen Peterson, ran from 1939 until their retirement in 1972.

As a child, Ray displayed his talents in music and art early in life, singing for church, school and community events, decorating store windows, and designing prize-winning floats for Oldham’s annual Field Day parade. Ray graduated from Oldham High School as class valedictorian in 1963 and attended Dakota State University (then General Beadle State College) where his sweepstakes-winning float designs became legendary.

Active in band, choir, theatre and student government while cheerleading for both football and basketball, writing for the school newspaper and editing the Trojan yearbook, Ray was named GBSC’s “Man of the Year” in 1966 and was also listed in the 1966 edition of Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and served as General Beadle’s Director of Student Activities prior to entering the United States Army in 1969.

Ray completed his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, his schooling in transportation documentation at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and his service as a Transportation Specialist in Long Binh, Vietnam, where on January 18, 1971, he was presented the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement.

Ray enrolled as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Speech and Theatre at South Dakota State University in 1971, graduating with a Master of Arts Degree in Speech and Theatre in 1973.

He immediately became the full-time Designer/Technical Director for State University Theatre, a position Ray held for 31 years prior to becoming the administrative Director of Theatre in 2003.

During his 40-year tenure at SDSU, Ray designed sets and costumes for over 200 theatre productions, directed countless musicals for both State University Theatre and Prairie Repertory Theatre, and served as the faculty advisor to the Alpha Psi Omega Dramatics Honorary Fraternity, coordinating and leading countless theatre student field trips to Minneapolis, Chicago and New York City – resulting in a cherished collection of over 350 Broadway Playbills from the plays and musicals seen between 1972 and 2011.

In 1976 Ray produced and directed SDSU’s Red, White and Blue Bicentennial Revue, “Traveling with Uncle Sam,” which opened in Brookings before traveling throughout South Dakota and culminating at the annual Sioux Empire Farm Show in Sioux Falls. In 1989, as part of South Dakota’s Centennial observance, Ray once again served as both producer and director for SDSU’s state-wide touring musical, “South Dakota Proud.” The show’s 62 performances played to 29,872 people in 40 different communities before closing with two packed-

house amphitheater performances at Mt. Rushmore as part of the Monument’s Fourth of July Centennial Celebration.

Over the past five decades, Ray has also served as a judge for many speech-related activities including the SDHSAA State Oral Interpretation Contest, the One-Act Play Festival, and the state-wide Poetry Out Loud Contest. The numerous awards and honors Ray received for his services to the state and to higher education include several of the following: • Three-time SDSU “Teacher of the Year” honors in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1981, 1984 and in 2002.

• The 1984 Dakota State University Distinguished Alumnus Award

• The Outstanding Speech Educator in South Dakota Award for the year 2000

• Named Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies and Theatre by the South Dakota Board of Regents

In addition to his contributions in education over the years, Ray has been willing to share his musical and artistic talents through church and communityrelated activities. As an artist, he was instrumental in designing and chairing the Decorations Committee for the annual Brookings Evening for the Arts and, for a number of years, spearheaded the Community Cultural Center Festival of Trees. He regularly shares his talents with the elderly by singing at assisted living centers and nursing facilities throughout the

area, and he is a member of Dr. Rick Holm’s Hopeful Spirit Choral, a group that performs for hospice patients or anyone in need of an uplift.

Perhaps Ray’s favorite involvement and most notable state-wide contribution has come as a direct result of an invitation to serve as a vocalist for the 1966 Miss South Dakota Pageant in Hot Springs – an invitation that has led to a 52-year commitment to the Miss America-franchised organization as Producer and Production Director. It was a challenging position with an annual requirement of picking a new theme, selecting, editing and recording theme-supported music, securing choreographers and entertainers, designing the set and costumes, writing the script, turning a bare gymnasium space into a “theatre,” and then directing the show – year after year. But there have been perks, too, for Ray’s involvement with the Miss America Pageant system has also provided him with an opportunity to travel while judging 43 state pageants, to serve on the National Association of Miss America State Pageant Board of Directors, and in the late 1980s, to serve as Assistant Director to the Miss America Pageant, which he continues to attend annually. In recognition of Ray’s 50-plus years of dedicated volunteer service, in 2016 the Miss America Organization presented Ray with the Miss America Crowning Achievement Award and South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard proclaimed June 18, 2016, as “Ray Peterson Day” – resulting in Ray being affectionately known by all as “Mr. South Dakota.”

JOHN PORTER Sioux Falls, SD

Leading Integrated Health Care Systems John Thomas Porter was born and raised in Pierre, SD, where his parents operated a small office supply and equipment business. Having grown up in the state’s capital city and the seat of state government, he developed an interest in political science and law. The middle of three sons in the family, he also loved outdoor activities like hunting and fishing along the beautiful Missouri River valley.

After graduation and a short military obligation, John began working for the law firm Doyle, Bierle and Hagerty in Yankton.

Don Bierle served as legal counsel for the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters, and he brought John alongside him as a staff attorney for the Sisters. John later progressed to associate general counsel for the Sisters.

Raised with a strong work ethic, John worked in road construction during the summers between his high school terms, and then pursued an undergraduate degree at the University of South Dakota, majoring in political science with minors in multiple subjects – history, math and sociology – simply because he found interest in all those areas. He graduated Cum Laude in 1971.

In the latter 1970s, John helped set up the corporate structure for the Presentation Health System. He was among a group who collaborated to make management decisions for the facilities – sometimes meeting for three days straight. They formed what became the Presentation Health System – the first Catholic health system in the area. Later, as legal counsel for the Benedictines, he was involved in setting up the Benedictine Health System corporate structure.

In 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Penny Lathem from Hayes, SD. When John received a scholarship to go on to law school at USD, Penny helped him through by working as a nurse in Vermillion.

In the summer of 1973 – a year before earning his law degree in 1974 – John interned at a firm in Yankton, where he was first introduced to legal work for the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, SD, and Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, SD, whose health ministry would later comprise virtually his entire career.

At the USD School of Law, John was an honor graduate, and

In 1984, John was named Executive Vice President for the Presentation Health System. When a Sister who held the top leadership role stepped down in 1989, John was named President of the system that included McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, and Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT, as well as three nursing homes.

In the 1990s, the two orders began in earnest to discuss the idea of joint sponsorship rather than join the large Catholic health systems that were forming nationwide. John facilitated

the process as both religious orders came together in an innovative co-sponsorship model, and in 1998 he was named President and CEO of the newly formed Avera Health.

Under John’s leadership, Avera has grown from 13 hospitals and nursing homes into a fully integrated continuum of care comprised of hospitals, clinics, long-term care centers, retirement communities, home care, hospice, sports and fitness centers, home medical equipment, health insurance, telemedicine and more. Today Avera has 300 locations in 100 communities and five states. As an early architect of change, John championed Avera’s model of partnerships and led Avera to invest in new facilities and programs in a number of communities, strengthening local health care and allowing people to receive quality care close to home.

During his extraordinary tenure, John has been a faithful steward and keeper of the Avera mission, allowing it to flourish. Even as a lifelong Protestant, John made the health ministry of the Sisters his own personal ministry and paved the way for all 17,000 employees to participate in the ministry.

He understands well how state and federal policy is changed and has a keen ability to predict the success of various policy initiatives. John’s broad view of health care has allowed Avera to be among national leaders in terms of creating an integrated delivery network. The Avera organization has become a direct reflection of the health care needs of South Dakota’s citizens – much more than a hospital system that owns some clinics.

John has shared his experience and expertise by serving on state health care advisory councils, and on the boards of the South Dakota Community Foundation, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement and more. He has also served in numerous roles for the Catholic Health Association and American Hospital Association.

Throughout their marriage, John and Penny have lived in Vermillion, Yankton and Sioux Falls, SD, and they enjoy vacationing in the Black Hills. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren, who also make their home in South Dakota. John retired from Avera in 2018 after 44 years of service to Avera and its predecessor organizations.
