In 1784, after early Loyalist settler Peter Ferguson was granted land in remote Charlottenburgh Township, he built a small log cabin with vertical, squared logs and fine wood detailing. He sold his property in 1804 to another settler, Reverend John Bethune, who added on a one-and-a-halfstorey structure that became his main living space. The home changed hands once again

when cartographer and North West Company partner David Thompson took over the home in 1815 where he lived for almost a quarter century. Considered one of the oldest heritage sites in the province—and designated a National Historic Site—, the Bethune-Thompson House in Williamstown now opens its doors to anyone who wants to witness the legacy of these leading men.

Former Kentucky slave Issaac Johnson learned the art of masonry in Winchester. After the original builder died, he took over the construction of the church and completed it in 1883.
One of the Bur Oak trees on the property is estimated to be about 270 years old. Pick up an acorn and plant it to keep history alive!

This summer signals the much anticipated return of the Glengarry Highland Games and all its pipe bands, highland dancers, pageantry, sport, and tradition. The 73rd edition of this celebration of Scottish heritage also features a vendors’ village for all things tartan, food trucks, a kids’ zone, and continuous celtic entertainment. For two years, Williamstown Fair organizers put on a valiant effort to maintain the honour of being “Canada’s Oldest Annual Fair” by organizing drive-through exhibitions. Yet nothing compares to exploring the fairgrounds in person, cheering the Tug of War competitors, watching livestock shows, and scarfing down fair food. Come enjoy the 211th edition!
Winchester Dairyfest will restore its place as a pivotal event in North Dundas. Inaugurated more than 30 years ago, this annual August event brings the community together with live entertainment, fabulous fare, and fun for the young and the young at heart. Also surefire draws: the petting zoo, downtown market, live music, and cow races.
The decisive land battle in the War of 1812 that saved Montreal from the Americans will be commemorated once again this summer! The Battle of Crysler Farm will be a large living history event and military reenactment that will unfold near Upper Canada Village.

GETTING IN For more than 10 years, Rens Trommels was a road and cyclocross racer in the Netherlands. When he moved to Summerstown in 2017, he bought a bike right away and connected with the local two-wheel scene.
“I love that there’s so much cycling here,” he says. “And you can do it in all four seasons!” For mountain biking in the summer and fat biking in the
Gear winter, he heads to the Summerstown Trails in South Glengarry. For road biking, he hits the open roads throughout SDG. “I prefer the country roads because it’s so quiet. Sometimes, I’ll even ride at night with the sun setting. The scenery is just so incredibly beautiful,” he admits. “But I also love the Waterfront Trail from Summerstown through Cornwall to the Long Sault Parkway. Such a great ride!”

ON TRACK Snowmobile one of the mini loops—about 130 to 160 kilometres each—in the Upper Canada Snowmobile Region.
GLIDE, BABY, GLIDE Lace up for the three-kilometre skateway through the forest at Countryside Adventures in Moose Creek. SADDLE UP The fat biking trails are always kept in tip top riding shape at the Summerstown Trails. Rentals available!
POWDER WALK Strap on your snowshoes for a quick and lovely romp through six kilometres of trails Warwick Forest near Berwick. NO SCHUSS, NO MUSS Get out to cross country ski at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Count on eight kilometres of groomed circuit. DAY 1 IN GLENGARRY Morning Start your day on the water with a three-hour Learn to Sail class with Silver Star Sailing School in South Lancaster. Or take a different tack: rent diving gear at Deco Stop and explore local dive sites!
Afternoon Grab some snacks and treats in town at Henderson’s Grocery and beeline it for the Lancaster Wharf to relax and fish off the pier.
Evening Head to Springfield Farm in Apple Hill for a farmstay in a gorgeously appointed yurt on 100 acres. Glamping at its finest!

DAY 2 IN DUNDAS Morning Greet the sunrise and catch a riverview while swinging your clubs for a round of 18 holes at Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg.
Afternoon Take a drive to Winchester for a specialty spa treatment at Heritage House Health Spa. We’d suggest the Chocolate Bliss Getaway package!
Evening Round out your weekend with a live concert and nice flight of wine at StoneCropAcres Winery in Morrisburg. Grab a slice of wood-fired pizza while you’re at it.

To Do IN Cornwall
Smack in the centre of SDG, Cornwall is all about urban amenities at nature’s doorstep.

Roam the river in a transparent kayak from Boatingery Adventure Trends. You can rent the two-seater boat from Guindon Park in the west end of the city and take it out for a two-hour jaunt on the St. Lawrence. Bike one of the most scenic stretches of the Waterfront Trail. The dedicated off-road route has continuous views of the river, historical landmarks, and lots of pit stops for food and drink. Cornwall Food Tours will take you on an adventure of the city’s culinary scene while serving up a side dish of culture and history. It’s a tasty attraction.

Every Sunday throughout the summer and fall, vendors at the Cornwall Kinsmen Farmers’ Market set up shop at the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College. Pick up your fresh local produce, meats, bread, maple syrup, honey and more! Beautiful, intimate B&Bs or branded hotel? The city has a full offering of accommodations with everything you need. Choose from historic properties like Chesley’s Inn or hotels with classic amenities including the Ramada Inn, Best Western, and the Comfort Inn.

Craig MacMillan is an 8th-generation descendant of the original settlers of his 1793 property in Alexandria. Along with his wife, Joanne Pratt, he reclaimed the property in 2008, worked to bring it back to life, and opened Stonehouse Vineyard in 2019. They offer a delightful selection of wines produced from the cold climate grapes they grow on site.

People from all over Ontario and Western Quebec come to this spring kickoff race. They run the river for 30 kilometres from St. Andrew’s all the way to Williamstown. Most spectators congregate in Martintown at the waterfall because it’s entertaining to watch people tip their boats!
