Every McIntosh Red apple—every one you eat, put in a pie or crumble, turn into juice or cider— comes from a seedling found in what is now Dundela, a tiny hamlet in South Dundas. In the spring of 1811, when John McIntosh started clearing his land north of Morrisburg, he came upon seedlings he did not recognize and decided to transplant some in his garden. Only one survived; it bore red-fleshed and tart-tasting apples. From that one tree, an entire Canadian industry grew. The Mac, as it is affectionately known, is now produced in greater quantities than any whereontariobegan.ca other fruit in Canada.

ALL

Together NOW

Here in SDG, we have a legacy of bringing people together. Here are some fast facts about some of our most popular events.

THE BISHOP'S HOUSE ST. RAPHAEL'S RUINS

Number of people who have attended the Glengarry Highland Games and enjoyed Scottish music, dance, and pageantry since 1948.

Number of years the Williamstown Fair has run continuously. It is Canada’s oldest annual fair!

TWO THAT

Tell A Tale

Unbroken South Mountain Fair attendance record for Allison Fawcett, after whom a show ring was recently named. The fair celebrates its 129th edition in 2021.

Year the Stormont County Fair launched. This four-day event in Newington was founded the same year as Confederation!

Travel King’s Road outside Williamstown—once a major route between Montreal and Toronto— to discover two historic sites that have served as longtime community touchpoints and waypoints of pride. The Bishop’s House was built in 1808 for the Reverend Alexander Macdonell, St. Raphael Church’s parish priest from 1804 to 1815 and later, the first bishop of Ontario. Once the home of Upper Canada’s first college, the building was expanded in 1924 with the addition of two new wings. Since 2016, the three-storey, approximately 2,000-square metre stone structure has been under restoration and is regaining its original splendor.

20

DISCOVER SDG Where Ontario Began

From this grand house, Rev. Macdonell commissioned the construction of St. Raphael’s Church, across the road. Dubbed the “Great Church in the Wilderness”, it had the capacity to hold a thousand parisioners. Construction was completed in 1821 and it remained the oldest Roman Catholic Church in English Canada until fire swept through it in 1970. Today, it’s walls still stand tall to frame a beautiful space for sky gazing. St. Raphael’s Ruins was declared a National Historic Site in 1999. Its gates open for visiting tourists and cultural events.

Price, in 1948, for the purchase of the Avonmore Fair’s currently used grounds. The fair buildings were moved to their new home by horse-drawn sleigh. The event was established in 1860.

Number of people who can sit in the grandstands at the Maxville Fair. The indoor seated hall overlooking the infield and the terrace below can accommodate another 500 people.

Minimum age of tractors permitted to enter the Chesterville Fair’s Antique Tractor Pull event. The fair, one of the younger ones in the region, started in 1931.
