We live in a place with soil so rich it grows dreams and possibilities. Our ancestors knew it when they settled here and we know it too. The four seasons have come and gone for generations, creating a quilt of crops as far as the eye can see. The taste of our home is unmistakable: from peaches-andcream to succulent strawberries, maple syrup on snow to honey off the comb, from hoppy beer to fine wine, from wild venison to big bass. Our table is set with goodness. We know the sounds of our home, too: the buzz of the cicadas, the whir of the fishing reel, the tick-tick-tick of the sprinklers on the fields, the cheep of the chickadees, the call of the bagpipes.
Our people are good stock, rooted in tradition. We are artists and bakers, farmers and builders, musicians and makers. We have hands for work, heads for business, and hearts for others. When you visit, you’ll find open minds, open roads, and open skies at every turn. Year Isaac Johnson, a Southern U.S. slave-turned-stonemasonand-writer completed the Winchester United Church. Many visitors make the pilgrimage to the landmark every year.

Stroll the beautiful boardwalk in Chesterville during Art on the Waterfront, a free two-day festival featuring art, food and drink, music, and all-around merriment. It takes place on the first weekend in June.

Get in on the music, dance, sport, food and drink, pageantry, and tradition of the Glengarry Highland Games. Join the more than one million visitors who have descended on this annual festival in Maxville since its debut in 1948.

Experience life as it was in the 1860s at Upper Canada Village. You’ll find a re-creation of a typical pioneer village and small farms in this 66-acre park. Meet the baker and the dressmaker, milk the cows and ride the miniature train, play dress up and enjoy making old-time treats.

Set up camp at one of the three campsites in the Long Sault Parkway, a picturesque archipelago of 11 islands in South Stormont. Don’t forget to leave your base to fish, dive, paddle, hike, and spend time at the beach.

Take an adventure into the wild: canoe or kayak the Great Heron Route from South Mountain to Chesterville (North Dundas). The 28-kilometre paddle takes you on a gentle slither down the South Nation River. Stop at the Cass Bridge Conservation Area—about halfway through the trip—to fish, have a picnic, and even try out geocaching!

Discover one of the sweetest summer hangout spots at Iroquois Beach. There’s a safe-swimming zone with lifeguards on duty, a good beach for sand-castle building, and a huge wooden patio where you can socialize and enjoy food and drink from the adjacent canteen.
Experience the rolling landscape and pic turesque holes at the Glengarry Golf and Country Club in Alexandria. Test your mettle on the 15th hole, aptly named “The Monster”. It’s Eastern Ontario’s longest Par 4!

A great place to go kayaking or paddleboarding. You can paddle all the way to Cardinal, about 12 kilometres one way, if you wanted to. And if you happen to be around in June, there’s the three-day Galop Canal Bluegrass Festival which is always a hoot. Great music in a gorgeous venue.

Mille Roches Beach in Long Sault not only has the largest sand beach on the St. Lawrence but is also located in a protected bay—perfect for paddlesports!
Charlottenburg Park Beach in Summerstown has a sprawling picnic zone with shady mature trees, picnic tables, BBQs, a beach volleyball court, horseshoe pit and two play structures.
Alexandria's Island Park Beach is a rare swimming hole in the heart of town! Take a dip in the clear waters of Mill Pond and then hang out on the warm, sandy beach. Lovely!

I think everyone should try island-hopping by bike. The paved roads on the parkway have large shoulders and the traffic is minimal which makes for safe riding.

Historic SDG Jail Built in 1833 and operational until 2002, our historic jail—located in downtown Cornwall—is one of the oldest public structures in Ontario. Tour guides share stories of a colourful cast of characters, deadly accounts, unsolved mysteries, and even paranormal activity!
Diving into our past to see how far we’ve come! Sir John Johnson Manor House National Historic Site A prominent colonial military leader and Williamstown’s founding father built this house on the banks of the Raisin River. It is a lovely representation of eighteenth-century frontier building techniques.
DID YOU KNOW... ... the pioneer graveyard in St. Andrew’s West is the burial site of John Sandfield MacDonald, Ontario’s First Premier, as well as that of explorer Simon Fraser.
...there is Canadian Army newsreel footage from 1945 crediting the SDG Highlanders for inventing broom hockey (broomball) while stationed in Germany.
St. Raphael’s Ruins Constructed in 1821, this limestone church was the oldest Roman Catholic Church in English Canada. Fire swept through it in 1970 but the walls still remain along with the original bell. It stands as a community touch point and historic site.
The Lost Villages Museum Six villages were flooded during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. Eleven heritage buildings were saved, and placed in a village-like setting just outside of Long Sault. Visit to learn about life before the inundation.
