Wanderer, Meet Wonder

Here, it’s not just the destination that matters, but the journey—the unhurried pace, the gentle unfolding of each moment.

Find richness in gathering with locals who share stories as easily as they share a smile, taste flavours as vibrant as the land itself, wander landscapes that feel as old as time, and explore lively city streets that hum with creativity and connection.

In Cornwall and SDG Counties, history lingers in quiet spaces, and curiously bridges past and present in ways both grounding and a little bit mysterious. It’s a place to breathe deeply and to feel truly welcomed.

So pull up a chair, stay awhile, and discover a destination that feels, in the best way, like coming home.

Come Find Us

We’re in a really good place, protected from the frenzied pace of the city yet close enough to benefit from the pulse of the urban jungle. Here’s how to reach us.

By car

A one-hour drive from Ottawa and Montreal, and a quick jaunt from Northern New York, will get you to Cornwall, SDG Counties, and Akwesasne. Each community is easily accessible via Highways 401 and 417, and NY Route 37 via the Three Nations Bridge Crossing.

Planning a visit to Akwesasne?

Please visit the Akwesasne Travel website to learn more about the community, its geographical spread, and potential border crossing requirements.

By train

You can ride the rails with Via Rail and Amtrak with service to Cornwall and Alexandria.

By boat

Cruise the St. Lawrence River to reach our waterfront communities in your own vessel or consider a trip with St. Lawrence Cruise Lines. The classic Canadian riverboat plies the waters—and goes through the locks in Iroquois—with overnight ports in Cornwall and Morrisburg.

The Quintessentials

These authentic local experiences are calling for you.

Don your tartan and head to the annual  Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, one of North America’s largest Scottish festivals. Excellent experiences await you: sonorous pipe bands, highland dancing, caber tosses and tug-of-war, and vendors hawking everything from tartan goods to Scottish delicacies.

In 2025, celebrate the 55th edition of Morrisburg’s quirkiest festival, Tubie Weekend. Float your decorated inner tube downriver, vying for a prize for the fastest time or most creative design. Off the water, indulge in food, music, family-friendly activities, and the spirit of summer.

Fields of Gold has earned a reputation as a beautiful day trip destination in Monkland. In summer and fall, snap your selfies in the sunflower fields, pick fresh flowers in the u-pick zone, get lost in the corn maze, and roam the pumpkin patch.

European-style and aged cheeses from Glengarry Fine Cheese have helped put Lancaster on the map. Take home a wedge of their Global Cheese Awards-winning varieties: the soft and creamy Celtic Blue (Gold), semi-firm Lankaaster Aged organic (Gold), and well-balanced Iron Horse cheddar (Best International Cheese).

Every year, we have a full lineup of exciting events including our Horse Lovers’ Weekend, 1860s Fall Fair and Quilt Show, Pumpkinferno, and  Alight at Night. Whether visitors choose to attend to learn about 19th-century living or the village as a backdrop for magical encounters, there’s no doubt they’ll be delighted.”

Smelko, Special Events Officer, Upper Canada Village

Ooey gooey, thick-crusted, and fully loaded with toppings: that’s how we’d describe authentic Cornwall-style pizza. Order a pie from one of the old-school pizzerias like  King George Restaurant or Riverside Pizza to enjoy a slice of this beloved local specialty.

Held annually for more than 130 years, the  South Mountain Fair is a classic rural Ontario event.

Everyone loves the live music, fair food, and carnival rides but the Season Ender Bender demolition derby and the raucous rodeo are definitely the hottest tickets in town!

Hop on your board or BMX to ride the  Akwesasne Skatepark in Kawehno:ke, also known as Cornwall Island. The 9,600-square-foot waterfront park has rail features, ramps,

and a bowl so you can practice your tricks plus a splash pad and playground for more fun.

It may only be a small slope but Cornwall's  Big Ben Ski Centre features big fun. This winter, the hill is celebrating its 50th anniversary so bring or rent skis and snowboards to enjoy the special events, terrain park, rail jams, and glow nights.

The Cornwall Curling Centre  has proudly hosted The Shorty Jenkins Classic for the past seven years. We are honoured and excited to welcome world-class and Olympic-calibre curlers, as well as eager spectators, to our wonderful facility once again this September!”

In our region, the  Waterfront Trail stretches all the way from Bainsville to Iroquois. Explore it on foot or bike to reach scenic parks, beaches, cities, and villages; along the way, you can enjoy stunning river views, wildlife watching, plus picnic areas and playgrounds.

Every fall, the Annual Trunk Sale at Marlin Orchards draws 100+ vendors and thousands of shoppers from near and far. The two-day affair in

Summerstown is the place to find the best original wares—like handcrafted jewellery, knitwear, pottery, woodworking, artisanal foods, and more.

Just as summer winds down, the  Akwesasne International Powwow ramps up. Colourful, powerful, and infused with pride, the region’s largest cultural event brings together local and visiting dancers, drummers, food vendors, and artisans in a show of Mohawk and Indigenous culture.

Every Sunday between May and September, stock car racers at the  Cornwall Motor Speedway put on a high-octane show for the crowd. Get in the stands to experience the roar of the engines and the excitement of fast-paced racing with Modified, Pro Stock, and Sportsman classes.

Crysler’s  Cannamore Orchard can best be described as a one-stop family fun destination. There’s apple and pumpkin picking, giant hedge mazes, cow-train and covered wagon rides, and visits with the animals. If you’re here around Halloween, you must try the spooktastic Acres of Terror experience!

Built in 1833, the  Historic SDG Jail is steeped in eerie history. You can take a tour to learn about incarcerated characters, unsolved mysteries, and bold escapes and even join a paranormal investigation. Might you meet Matthew, the boy who haunts the courthouse?

“Where Ontario Began”

It’s not just a tagline, it’s a fact.

On their voyage into the heart of the continent, explorers navigated the St. Lawrence River into our region. Fur traders established industry here; loggers and fishermen followed suit. Soldiers and civilians loyal to the British Crown settled on the riverfront and built New Johnstown and delineated the Royal Townships, now known as Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.

What it is:

A copy of the McNiff Map

Why it matters:

Created by Patrick McNiff who was dispatched to map out Eastern Ontario before the Loyalists began to settle it. It is considered one of the most essential resources for Loyalist history as it outlines concessions and names the owner of each lot. Learn what lands were reserved for upper and lower officers, the Mohawk people, and also emancipated black soldiers.

What it is:

The John Baker display

Why it matters:

Born into slavery in the 1780s, John Baker died a free man in Cornwall in 1871. He was owned by Major John Gray, a British officer during the American Revolution and his forced labour included farming his master’s land in present-day Cornwall. Baker’s servitude continued under Gray’s son, Robert, until he was freed in 1804. After being freed, he fought for the British in the War of 1812 and later in the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon Bonaparte.

The history and heritage of the region is chock full of fascinating details, beautifully protected and preserved at the Cornwall Community Museum & Archives

Here’s a short list of what you might want to see at the museum—and why it matters. Fun fact:

What it is:

A replica of the HMCS Stormont

Why it matters:

Named after Stormont County, this frigate for the Royal Canadian Navy, was active during World War II. Many troops from our region served on this ship during the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Atlantic. Tycoon Aristotle Onassis bought the Stormont in 1952, transforming it into a superyacht he named the Christina O. Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and the Rockefellers were among the list of notable guests. You can still charter the ship at a rate of more than $1M per week!

One of Baker’s many descendants in the region is none other than his great-, great-, great-, great-, great-nephew, Brent Whitford, curator at the museum.

Why not begin your visit to the region with a tour of our local museum, where you can learn about our rich history! There is more to Cornwall and SDG Counties’ past than meets the eye. One of our friendly guides will be happy to assist! We look forward to greeting you!”

What it is:

The Cotton Mills exhibit

Why it matters:

Many of the textiles in this exhibit room were manufactured in the weaveshed of the Canada Mill, one of the four mills owned by Canada Cottons Manufacturing Company. In 1883, the weaveshed became the first ever industrial facility to be lit electrically when Thomas Edison travelled to Cornwall to turn on his incandescent lighting system. What was once a bustling industrial zone that saw the influx of many French Canadian workers has now been transformed into a revitalized hub with condos and businesses.

The original inhabitants of the land

This region sits on the unceded traditional territory of the Akwesasne Mohawk and their ancestors, a fact we acknowledge and appreciate. Their lands, including several islands and swaths along the St. Lawrence River, sit where present-day Ontario, Quebec, and New York State meet. Portions of the territory, including Kawehnoke (Cornwall Island)—are on the “Canadian” side, while the southern portion of the community extends into the U.S. Regardless of these unique geopolitical boundaries, the community remains strong and united.

To learn about Mohawk history and learn their stories through contemporary art, artefacts, and presentations, visit the  North American Travelling College (Kawehno:ke), the Akwesasne Cultural Centre (Akwesasne, NY), or take one of several immersive cultural tours through Akwesasne Travel

Bishop’s House  was built in 1808 and is among the oldest and most historic buildings in Ontario. It makes the perfect backdrop for Summer Sundays, an afternoon concert series featuring local musicians. If you make your way here, be sure to visit St. Raphael’s Ruins across the road!”

—Brenda Baxter, President, Glengarry Fencibles Trust

Visit the blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and log homes at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan to explore the life and times of early Scottish settlers.

Sir John Johnson Manor House houses the Glengarry Archives, and hosts popular Williamstown Discovery Walks and paranormal investigations too.

The Cornwall Historical Walking Tour and the SDG Historic Plaque Tour put our heritage on display with stunning artwork by local artist Pierre Giroux.

The  Glengarry Nor’Westers & Loyalist Museum in Williamstown shares the exciting stories of early explorers and fur traders.

The  Glengarry County Archives in Alexandria holds the largest repository of historical records in Eastern Ontario and the greatest collection of “Glengarriana”.

As a Mohawkowned business, we understand that Akwesasne is unique culturally and geographically; we also know that visitors are fascinated to learn more about our community. From late May to early October, we give personalized boat tours so they can enjoy a taste of the true Awkesasne experience.”

Walks in the Park

Though we have vast green spaces in between our cities, towns, villages, and hamlets, we still very much treasure our designated green gathering spaces. See you there?

Lamoureux Park

Cornwall’s waterfront jewel

Sprawled across 43 waterfront acres, there’s lots of space to spread out a blanket and relax but also lots to do if you’re in the mood to move. To get around, use the multi-use Riverside Trail; it meanders through the entire park and connects all the points of interest. Here are the highlights:

The Bandshell is truly the central amenity in the park. Between the Arts in the Park summer concert series and big events like Ribfest , the International Afro Diversity Festival, Akwesasne Powwow, and PRIDE, the stage is almost always filled with entertainers—and we love it like that.

The Rotary Eco Garden, a revitalized ecosystem, surprisingly feels like a little getaway thanks to a cascading creek and semi-hidden hangout spots. Most kids naturally gravitate to the play structure and the splash pad but some insist on going to the Aquatic Centre for the chance to zoom down the slide. Others are just as delighted with simple fun like rolling down the steep hill towards the water or playing chase in the open spaces. No matter what they choose to do, expect happy squeals.

If you’re one who likes to ply the waters for leisure or sport, there’s a boat launch as well as Marina 200, a sheltered basin with capacity for 160 boats.

Detour to downtown

Go to Life’s Little Pleasures, for Chris’ handpicked collection of housewares, gifts, clothing, and accessories;  Love and Lee, for your fix of trendy and classic fashion pieces; Echo Trends, for its well-curated consignment boutique; and the Cornwall Square, the city’s biggest shopping mall for retail therapy and quick-service meals.

Island Park

Alexandria

There’s a definite correlation between hotter temperatures and the number of people who congregate at Island Park.

The sandy public beach on Mill Pond  is a major draw. On any given day, you’ll find people sunbathing, swimming to cool off, kayaking, and angling.

Of course, the park’s playground and splash pad draw a crowd but so does the recently expanded  skatepark NEW! on the southeast section of the park.

Four soccer fields, two tennis courts, a basketball court, and a beach volleyball court round out the recreational amenities.

Finally, if you follow the paved pathways to the south of the green space, you can tuck into the Glengarry Trails, a system with more than 15 kilometres of all-season paths.

Detour to downtown

Get to Attic Treasures and Flowers for tasteful home decor items and small, elegantly upcycled furniture pieces; The Glengarry Market for its artisanal food products and seasonal fruits and veggies; and finally,  Steve’s Knotty Furniture, for functional, oneof-a kind pieces from furniture to charcuterie boards.

Morrisburg Waterfront Park Morrisburg

The Waterfront Trail also passes through Morrisburg’s townsite, slicing through this park. That means you can walk, cycle, run, or rollerblade to where you want to go.

Along the way, you’ll come across informational plaques looking out over the river. Part of the Morrisburg Waterfront Historical Path Project , they tell the story of the town, and what changed the course of its history.

Several benches on the river’s edge provide fantastic vantage points for ship watching. It’s exciting to see the frequent parade of lakers, salties, bulkers, and even cruise ships.

Getting a cone with a chocolate and vanilla ice cream swirl at Docksyde Ice Cream and Snack Bar is a local tradition. This year marks the shop’s 20th anniversary!

Detour to downtown

Get to  Barnfull O’ Goodies to hunt for high-quality antiques and collectibles; Juli’s Fashion for elevated outfit essentials; and Biba’s Shoes for footwear that matches your mood.

Morrisburg Beach  and its sandy beach give the whole family the option to swim in the river, splash along the shallow shoreline, and/or build the most spectacular sandcastles. Steps away, the splash pad offers another refreshing retreat from the heat. There's even a double dog park for your pooch!

Staying at Chesley’s Inn is really a way to time travel into a quieter, more elegant time— but with modern amenities.”

Stop and Go

Built in 1814, Chesley’s Inn is Ontario’s oldest inn and Cornwall’s oldest surviving building is—and has always been—an important stop for people travelling between Montreal and all points west of this city.

In fact, Catherine Parr Trail, the famous British émigré and author, stayed at the inn and it’s likely Charles Dickens and Thomas Edison did, too.

Construction of the railway replaced the river as a major

mode of transportation, and the inn was transformed into a personal residence. The house eventually fell into dire disrepair—until Robert Prowse took ownership in 2013 and began restoration work. It took nearly a year to breathe life back into

the building, upgrade its systems, and design the interior to match the grandeur of the Georgianstyle architecture.

Now, Chesley’s Inn is beautifully fulfilling its primary purpose: hosting travellers who are passing through town.

We have stayed here a few times. Nice hotel, quiet rooms, with a great breakfast, with a lot of choice. There is a restaurant and bar too and we noticed an outdoor swimming pool for the summer. The rooms are spacious and the staff are excellent.

We stayed here driving up to New Brunswick. We had such a positive experience that we decided to stay again on our way home rather than elsewhere.
