La Jolla man ordered to pay fines for embezzlement

BY NEAL PUTNAM A La Jolla man has been ordered to pay $313,981 to a mortgage insurance firm and the Internal Revenue Service on terms of five years probation in a mortgage fraud case.

Mehran Abazary, 66, was not given any jail time as his attorney, Stephen Meister, wrote in court papers he has health challenges including prostate cancer.

Abazary was the customer of a firm known as Better Mortgage Co., which was operated by two brothers who both were sentenced to 18 and 13 months in federal prison for involvement in

The recent hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego, which has killed 20 people to date, prompted city officials to finally address the growing issue of homelessness. Their solution, however temporary, was to install hand-washing stations at homeless “hot spots,” pressure wash the sidewalks in said areas with a bleaching solution and create a tent city far enough removed from the outbreak epicenter, yet right in some residents’ backyards.

News Preliminary hearing for Greatrex to continue Nov. 29

BY NEAL PUTNAM A San Diego police detective testified Nov. 14 that an agency reportedly paid by Cindy Greatrex for grant writing services when she was president of the La Jolla Park and Recreation Council turned out to be only a post office box in Chicago that was associated with Greatrex's phone number.

Greatrex, 51, is charged with grand theft and is suspected of stealing $67,935 from the non-profit organization that she used to run as president. She stepped down and later sent out an email saying she meant well, but she used council funds to try and get a new playground in the area.

Greatrex is accused of writing numerous checks to herself, and board members testified Tuesday all checks are supposed to have two board members' signatures, a process she bypassed.

Greatrex has pleaded not guilty.

She remains free on $70,000 bond.

Detective Bernie Piceno told San Diego Superior Court Judge Amalia Meza that he found a Chicago company, which was paid with council funds, but the address turned out to be a post office box. This Chicago agency also listed Greatrex's telephone number in San Diego with her photo on a website, he said.

San Diego construction companies with similar names that were listed in records as receiving $2,500, but the owners said they had never heard of Greatrex. Their names came up as performing some type of services that Greatrex claimed she paid with her own money and then reimbursed herself.

The preliminary hearing will resume on Nov. 29 as some witnesses were unable to testify this week. Meza will decide whether she should stand trial for grand theft or if the case should be dismissed.

Greatrex's attorney, Paul Neuharth, Jr., wants to present some witnesses and documents that would bolster his client's claim that she did pay for grant-writing services out of her own funds. He will ask Meza to dismiss the case at the

end of the hearing.

Neuharth said people needed to be paid for grant writing services and such applicants for grants are not written for free.

The detective testified he met with interim president Mary Munk, the former treasurer, and another board member to discuss the withdrawals of $25,832.74 from the group's savings account, and $18,270 from the checking account. He said they all noticed that Greatrex wrote checks to herself and did not have a second board member sign them as required.

Piceno said he noticed one withdrawal was for $5,000 in cash.

Piceno said he obtained bank camera footage that showed Greatrex making all the withdrawals.

Greatrex also deposited funds from the council into her own Wells Fargo bank account and bank cameras showed she made those deposits, said the detective.

Piceno did confirm he contacted a web designer from La Mesa who said he received a check from Greatrex for work he did for her.

However, the web designer said the work was for other nonprofit groups and not for the La Jolla Park and Recreation Council, said the detective.

Adel Afkarian, now 44, and Atef Afkarian, now 42, were both released from federal prison on March 24 and April 6 this year, according to the U.S. Board of Prisons website. Adel and Atef Afkarian were both sentenced in March, 2016 to 18 and 13 months in prison and ordered to pay $5.5 million in restitution that includes the figure that Abazary was ordered to pay.

Adel and Atef Afkarian immigrated from Iran with their parents and attended Mission Bay High School after becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. They were charged with fraudulent sales of other homes in La Jolla. Abazary also immigrated from Iran in the 1970s.

Abazary pleaded guilty to subscribing to a false tax return by omitting income of $250,00, which he received from a mortgage firm involving the sale of his $2 million home in the 6000 block of Soledad Mountain Road in 2010.

U.S. District Court Judge John Houston sentenced Abazary Nov. 6.

He ordered Abazary to pay $63,981 to the IRS, which represents the tax owed as failure to report income and $250,000 to Fidelity National Title Group, the nation's largest title insurance company which also provides escrow services.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Allen wrote Abazary made a $250,000 profit "through the fraud-

ulent sale of his heavily underwater $2 million La Jolla home" by "working with a group of crooked real estate professionals." She wrote that Abazary "made it appear that the mortgage did not exist so that he could sell the home to an unsuspecting buyer and collect the purchase money without paying off his lender."

Several others who were only identified in court papers by initials had developed a "complex debt elimination scam designed to make mortgage debt disappear," wrote Allen. They fabricated a series of fraudulent deeds to erased the mortgage debts.

Abazary bought the home in 2002, which was refinanced in 2006 with a $2 million loan from a bank. He defaulted in 2009 and filed a fake deed of trust, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. The fraudulent sale closed in July of 2011 and transferred money to bank accounts in Germany held in the name of his relatives, according to prosecutors.

Abazary reported he lost the home to a foreclosure.

Coastal exemption battle against ‘McMansions’

BY DAVE SCHWAB In 2015, Sharon Wampler and about 80 of her Bird Rock neighbors started out on a quest to clarify — and tighten — some of the city's rules governing so-called “McMansions,” oversized homes on undersized lots.

Three years later, where, and when, that quest will end remains in doubt.

The land-use “dragon” some Bird Rockers are trying to slay: The 50 percent rule in the San Diego municipal code allowing single-family home remodels to be exempt from costly and time- consuming Coastal Development Permits, as long as the builder keeps 50 percent-plus of the exterior walls of the existing home.

“Fifty percent of the front of our house is still the original walls,” said Wampler, a scientist with no previous land-use experience speaking on her own home remodel. “But now they're (developers) building around that, which has actually happened over the past five years because of the aggressive interpretation of that (50 percent) rule. That's what started this three-year journey.”

Scripps nurse delivers baby off the side of a road after car crash en route to hospital

BY BLAKE BUNCH Monday, Nov. 6 proved a typical night for Scripps La Jolla ER nurse Dayna Dumont. After a relatively steady night began to wind down, Dumont had the ability to leave a little earlier than usual. Since she works the overnight shift, Dumont was heading back to her home in North Park to catch some muchneeded rest. This night had other plans for her, however.

As she drove down a frontage road near Scripps, she came to a halt when she noticed man frantically

waving for her to help. She stopped and approached the car, with the man, Hongwei Zhang, frantically saying “My wife, the baby.”

“I was going home early, about 3 a.m., so there was no one else on the road,” said Dumont. “I noticed that their car was completely un-driveable. The airbags had deployed, the front bumper was completely off, and one wheel was completely useless. Even though they were about 200 yards from the hospital, I began helping as much as I could.

“It wasn’t until I noticed his wife, Ying Shi, was stuck in the back seat

as her husband continued to be frantic. I asked her about the baby, which by this point had technically been delivered. I think the best thing I could’ve done at the time was to provide them with a calm presence, because tensions were so high.”

Dumont noted that since she is an ER nurse, the standard protocol would involve her passing the delivery on to a natal unit. Without her emergency room doctors, medical device, etc. she was left in the literal dark to perform her first, and perhaps only delivery.

co area, Dumont has been working at Scripps Health La Jolla for 16 months.

When prompted as to whether this is one of the more unique experiences she has been involved in, Dumont quickly replies: “Oh yeah,, this is definitely something that will stick with me for years to come. The fact that everyone involved in the situation, especially their newborn child, were able to leave the scene of the accident unharmed, is truly a blessing.”

Guitarist David Broza at Lawrence Family JCC Israel’s iconic singer-songwriter, guitarist and UNICEF goodwill ambassador David Broza will embark on a coast-to-coast winter tour this December, celebrating 40 years since the release of his bestknown song, “Yihye Tov” (Things Will Be Better). Broza will bring his talents to the Lawrence Family JCC on Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. The wellknown composition was written in 1977 during the Arab-Israeli peace talks between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and has become an anthem of the Israeli peace movement.

The work, featuring a band of both Israeli and Palestinian musicians, resulted in a beautiful, intimate documentary of the same name. Vanity Fair called the documentary “extraordinary” and added “if no one else is going to try and heal the world, he will.” “East Jerusalem West Jerusalem” is currently streaming on Netflix. The title track, co-written by and featuring Wyclef Jean, appears on The Set List.

“The Set List” also includes “The Long Road,” featuring Irish singer Maura O’Connell. The song, written by Cliff Eberhardt, was recorded in 1998, but was shelved along with the ensuing album after Broza sustained serious injuries following a car crash.

WineSellar and Brasserie: French restaurant and wine bar

BY DAVE SCHWAB WINESELLAR AND BRASSERIE The Winsellar Brasserie in Sorrento Valley is actually five businesses — a French restaurant, wine lockers, a casual wine bar, a wine shop and international wine tours — all rolled into one.

And company chairman/CEO and founder Gary Parker, an SDSU architecture student who started the endeavor as a wine storage facility in 1985, likes it and intends to keep it that way.

“I'm an elderly statesman, that's enough for me,” quipped Parker, who added, when he started out, “There were no private wine cellars at that time, nobody was storing wines for commercial use. So we started renting out wine lockers, and when they got full, we looked for and found this place (9550 Waples St., Suite 115).”

Parker converted much of his new building space into wine lockers for his customers expanding, from 33 to 175, the number of individual lockers available. He now warehouses wine lockers on three floors of the building.

“I designed this storage,” noted Parker adding, wine, of course, is the central focus of most everything WineSellar does.

Parker added he became both a wine connoisseur and an epicurean early-on.

“We have three subscriber wineof-the-month clubs, including the casual side wine bar lounge downstairs from the Brasserie,” Parker said, noting he caters to a broad cross-section of wine aficionados.

“We have everyone from beginners who store a couple cases with us, to collectors,” he said. “We have a guy who has a thousand cases of

wine (stored) with us. He's got a lot of our third floor.”

These days, the Parkers are getting more involved with their wine tours, which were started in 2001 and run by wife Lori Parker.

“We go around the world,” said Parker of his tours. “I just got back from one in Portugal.”

WineSellar tour groups are small, around a dozen people, and the wine tour trips are about two weeks in duration.

“We've been to Spain, Italy, France, South America and South Africa,” Parker said, adding he keeps the tour groups small because, “We have intimate dinners at wineries, and that number of people is enough for one table.

The WineSellar Brasserie is open every day except Sunday. Lunch in the Brasserie is served Tuesday through Friday. Dinners there are served Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Nine-Ten Restaurant and Bar looks good enough to eat, thanks to renovation

BY MARTIN JONES WESTLIN When the Nine-Ten Restaurant and Bar opened in 2001, the interior’s glut of mahogany fixtures almost seemed to defeat the purpose of the design. Here was an ideal locale, mere millimeters from the ocean and virtually next door to the Prospect Street bustle three blocks up the way — still, those dark walls gave the place a dungeony look and feel while the sun had its way with the spectacular immediate area.

But even as socially conscious wardens renovate their prisons, so too do restaurateurs conspire to strike while the iron’s hot. Gone is the Nine-Ten’s dead of night amid its reopening last month, replaced by lighter walls and several varieties of open lighting that features postmodern chandeliers. Pristine new furniture and tile abut to-die-for artwork that mimics La Jolla Cove in every sense.

And don’t forget the bar, with its new lighting and a whole different feel to the Grande Terrace patio.

Six months and $300,000 later, Nine-Ten is making up for lost time, sporting a look only a reconstructive surgeon could love.

From the oatmeal, berries and house-made granola at the start of the day to lunch’s grilled octopus and New York steak, the Nine-Ten serves fare on a par with its counterparts up the street — you’ll find that’s especially true at dinner, when the Roasted Colorado Lamb Loin insistently rests on its laurels.

And if you forgo the vaunted halfbaked chocolate cake or the caramel mousse, with its pumpkin cheesecake core, we can’t be held responsible.

Neither can we get enough of local photographer Dana Midlack’s stunning art, which runs the length of the dining room’s northern wall.

It’s an absolutely splendid complement to the seascape that awaits in one of the Village’s quieter neighborhoods — a series of slats screams the lush blues and browns from the ocean beyond, oranges and greens providing the cadenced complement. The room’s appointments handsomely frame this marvelous

uproar of color and light, a flawless interpretation of the water’s perpetual rise and fall.

If the art is meant to get you to linger a while, there’s only one appropriate setting — the bar, which amid its renovation is no scissorbill itself. The same fresh, earthen look greets the casual bar customer — and management is happy to offer appetizers like lamb meatballs and short-rib ravioli and signature cocktails like the 910 Manhattan, with its orange coriander-infused whiskey and sweet vermouth. This is a good one — you might want to make sure you’ve eaten first.

Whatever you decide, please be assured that this is some kind of facelift, from the fantastic wall art to lighting that must have been designed by an architect. Kudos to La Jolla’s Robinson Brown Design for the magnificent plan, to NineTen management for staying the course and to you for delighting in all of it.

Santas to invade the beach on Dec. 9: The fifth annual Santa Run in PB San Diego will be very merry indeed, as approximately 4,000 Santas take over Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach for The fifth annual San Diego Santa Run, Saturday, Dec. 9, starting at 10 a.m.

Hosted by San Diego Running Co., formerly High Performance Movement, the event is the largest Santa Run in Southern California. Offering a series of waves to choose from, the event includes a 5K Fun Run and one-mile runs that feature the Santa’s Little Helper Mile (for the festive pup), the Santa’s Elves Mile (for kids) and the Speedy Mile (for competitive Santas).

“This is going to be the biggest San Diego Santa Run yet,” said Pete

Hess, co-founder, San Diego Running Co. “Every year, more and more runners sign up after hearing about how fun it is through family and friends who have participated. It’s a great way to kick-off the holiday season.”

Throughout the course, runners donning “Sunny Santa Suits” – complete with white beards, Santa hats and sunglasses (it is San Diego, after all) – will get in the spirit as holiday music is performed live on corners along the route.

After the run, Kris Kringles – young and old – are invited to stick around for the 38th annual Pacific Beach Holiday Parade, marching down Garnet Avenue, beginning at

1 p.m. The parade is funded, in part, by revenue generated through the Santa Run and other events put on

Both groups are continuing to work to abolish La Jolla's 50 percent coastal exception rule, and replace it with their own “Incentive-based zoning” approval process.

CRCD’s “Incentive-based zoning” process would reduce the project applicant's floor area ratio (FAR) from .6 to .4 in La Jolla and Bird Rock.The applicant would then have to conform to CRCD’s list of design incentives to earn back their right to build their home more densely to the current .6 FAR allowed.

The floor area ratio is the relationship between the total amount of usable floor area that a building has, or has been permitted for the building, and the total area of the lot on which the building stands. A higher ratio indicates denser construction taking up a greater portion of its available lot. FARs in La Jolla have been contested for years, with community planners, using them to judge whether or not new homes or remodels are oversized and/or out of character with their surrounding neighborhoods.

Wampler said, with use of incentives discouraging overdevelopment, that builders will be able to get to the maximum FAR allowed, “But they're going to have to follow incentive-based rules, like push back the second story, or leave a view corridor,” she said.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s fourth annuall Bing Crosby Racing Season began on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Del Mar racing fans came out in droves for another exciting season. Opening Day presented a Hollywood Fashion Contest in the Plaza de Mexico. Contestants competed for more than $3,500 in cash and prizes.

The categories included most glamorous, best couple, debonair man, celebrity looka-like and movie character.

Nathalay Aguilera of San Diego was the Grand Prize winner along with winning the most glamorous category. She wore a 1940s-inspired gold gown with a gold Indian necklace topped off with a hand made floral fascinator. Aguilera took home a prize Fairmont Grand del Mar one-night stay and dinner for two at Addison Restaurant. This prize has a value of more than $1,000, plus $300 in cash, and a Studio Savvy Salon gift basket valued at $250.

Lisa Marks of La Jolla won the category for best celebrity look-a-like in a “Downton Abbey” lace dress with a coor-

dinating chapeau. The best dressed couple was Mark and Bridget Burger of Solana Beach. She was wearing a vintage blush dress with matching fascinator while Mark was wearing a men’s pin stripe suit with a complimenting scarf.

Excitement accelerated during the week building up to the first-time ever Del Mar’s Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 3 and 4. This is the Rolls Royce of horse racing with the world’s greatest thoroughbreds. During these two days, Longines presented the ‘Prize for Elegance’ to a male and a female.

Each day a $2,100 Longines watch was given to the male winner while a $2,500 Longines watch was given to the female winner. Stylish racegoers signed up and competed for the ‘Prize of Elegance.’ The celebrity judges on the first day were Bo Derek, Carson Kressley “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” and Longines representative Pascal Savoy. Contestants came from all over the world: UK, Ireland, Dubai, Texas, Nashville, Pennsylvania, Chicago, and of course San Diego!

VOX Productions did a terrific job of producing the Longine’s ‘Prize of Elegance,’ which turned out some knockout winners. Chelsea Mesa from Los Angeles won the most elegant prize on Friday wearing a Peggy Hartanto dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, and a Fawziya clutch and was topped off with a Country Peonies Percher. The male winner was

Francisco Hernandez and son from Hanford, Calif. They won the hearts of the audience with their matching outfits.

On Saturday, another group of fashionable contestants entered the ‘Prize of Elegance.’ The celebrity judges this time were Bonnie-Jill Laflin, newscaster for FOX Sports, Kressley, and Longines representativel Savoy. The winner was Eva Slabet from Chicago, Ill. wearing a dress she purchased with a coordinating Chapeau and shoes that she made to match. From my garden: Pomegranates are edible jewels for Thanksgiving

BY LINDA MARRONE When pomegranates (Punica granatum) appear in the markets you know that the holiday season is right around the corner. About the size of an apple, the pomegranate is actually a berry and not a fruit as most people assume. The outer portion of the richly colored pomegranate is inedible, but once opened the inside is filled with a juicy flesh and jewel-like edible seeds, called arils.

Grown since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, pomegranate trees thrive in hot arid climates throughout the world and they can live for 200 years. Considered to be drought-tolerant once established, the trees are self pollinating (you only need one in the garden) and they can be grown as a bushy shrub or into a medium sized tree that can range from 15-20 feet in height.

Many new hybrid varieties of pomegranates have been developed to grow in coastal regions like ours.

If you want to plant a pomegranate tree along the coast, plant it in welldrained soil and in the warmest area

of your garden where the tree will receive full sun for most of the day.

Varieties recommended for coastal regions are “Eversweet.” “Granada” and “Golden Globe.”

For the first couple of years while it is establishing, the tree will need watering and fertilizing on a regular basis, but once established they only need fertilizing on occasion and water when the soil dries out. In most cases, they will grow about 3 feet a year and bear fruit the first year or two after planting. Prune pomegranate trees after their second year to give them shape and remove any dead growth.

Pomegranates will grow on both old and new growth of the tree. You can also grow pomegranates in containers and they are well-suited to container planting because they have a shallow root structure. Make sure your container drains very well and it is placed in a sunny warm location.

Loaded with a multitude of health benefits, pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and are said to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Around Thanksgiving a few years

ago, a neighbor gave me a few pomegranates from his tree that grows beautifully in a sunny spot in his garden that is just a block from the beach. I used the seeds to top a salad I make during the holidays and now pomegranates are part of the recipe.

Holiday Salad Trader Joe's carries candied walnuts and orange champagne vinegar.

Salad: 1 bag spinach or mixed salad greens; 2 apples or pears with skins, diced; 1/2 cup candied or plain walnuts, or pecan pieces; 1/2 cup dried cranberries; 1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese or feta (optional); Seeds from 1 pomegranate*.

Citrus Vinaigrette (or use your favorite vinaigrette) ; 1/4 cup orange champagne vinegar; 2 tea honey; 1 tea celery seeds; 1/2 tea garlic powder; 1/2 tea dry mustard;

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil; Salt and pepper, to taste; Whisk the vinegar, honey, celery seeds, garlic powder, dry mustard and the olive oil together and refrigerate overnight. Let the vinaigrette sit out of the refrigerator 15 minutes and whisk before using. Toss the salad with enough of the vinaigrette to lightly coat it and top the salad with pomegranate seeds.

How to remove the seeds from a pomegranate: 1. Roll the fruit on a hard surface to loosen the seeds.

2.Cut or score around the center and tear it open.

3. Hold the cut half over a bowl, cut side down and tap the back portion of the skin with a wooden spoon, squeezing to release the seeds into the bowl.

‘Willing to be Lucky’ author Andy Friendly’s lifelong lessons in entertainment

BY BLAKE BUNCH Andy Friendly has spent the majority of his life around “show business.” His father, Fred, along with close friend and business partner Ed Murrow, created the template for pre-Internet modern television programming. Friendly, who is married to Golden Globe-winning actress Pat Crowley, definitely has had his hand in much of the programming that shaped the formative years of many’s lives himself. His early introduction, and storied career of his own, was the impetus for Friendly to write his memoirs, “Willing to be Lucky: Adventures in Life and Television,” from which he will be reading at DG Wills Books on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.

Friendly grew up a “studio rat,” wandering the halls of CBS and NBC studios in New York City. This was during the ‘50s and ‘60s when the two networks dominated late-night television, namely with NBC’s “Johnny Carson Show.” While he spent most of his younger life in New York, he also saw a decent amount of time in Southern California, eventually attending USC to study television and film. “‘Willing to be Lucky’ is definitely not a tell-all,” said Friendly of his first and “possibly only” book. “It

took roughly three years to write, and it was overall an enjoyable process. The project really began when I was having lunch with some old friends. I’ve had quite an eclectic career – and reminiscing about some of the stories brought a wealth of memories flooding back. My com-

panion asked me ‘Why don’t you write these down?’ So I did.”

After attending USC, Friendly returned to New York to start his career working with a local NBC news affiliate. His career eventually led him from the local news, to producing the likes of Richard Pryor’s

standup special “Here and Now,” talk show icons Tom Snyder and Tim Russert, represented Dan Rather, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Vin Scully and many more.

“What had started out as newsdriven, led to the talk shows, which were a huge source of entertain-

ment television at that time,” said Friendly. “I also was able to have the honor of being the original producer of “Entertainment Tonight,” CNBC and King World, which represent Oprah.”

While the glitz and glamor may be appealing to a wide audience, it seems as though Friendly’s befitting surname and equal temperament provide life lessons as well. In fact, that was another reason to publish the book.

“I just turned 66-years-old,” said Friendly. “Around this age, you start attending a lot of funerals and memorials of close friends and family. I realized that I have learned some tremendous lessons during my experience in entertainment, and wish to impart that to future generations of those wanting to be involved in the business, as well as my family.”

For those interested in showbiz lore, “Willing to be Lucky: Adventures in Life and Television” offers a wealth of personal anecdotes involving some of the key players of their time. Not only does the book focus on the glitz and glamour, but also places a great deal of emphasis on what it takes to be a better individual, family member or (pun intended) friend.

Teuscher puts La Jolla on the world’s $100 billion chocolate stage

BY MARTIN JONES WESTLIN It reportedly lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. It’s been known to curb dieters’ appetites and remedy diabetes; it relieves everything from cough to diarrhea. Its seeds were once so prized that it was used as a form of currency. It potentially prevents cancer, cuts your cholesterol, shuts up your kids and mends your heart every Feb. 14.

It’s chocolate, whose industry commands $100 billion in annual revenue worldwide — not a bad haul for a trade that got its start as a randy Central American drink 4,000 years ago. Say “Swiss chocolate,” and everybody on the planet knows exactly what you mean; the stuff ’s the citadel of citadels among professional chocolatiers, whose workers have a titanic labor union in Switzerland and whose consumers eat a little more than half the chocolate worldwide.

The California market doesn’t exactly take a back seat, with its See’s and Ghirardelli candies known throughout the globe — and La Jolla is the latest locale to bid another major vendor hearty welcome.

Give it up for Teuscher Chocolates of Switzerland, which opened here Nov. 16 under the ownership of a Swiss native whose ardor for the product vies for attention to the product itself.

Karin Bacon had taken the last

year to create her franchise, at suite 204 of 7863 Girard Ave., on the heels of a career in molecular biology, the study of the means by which various cellular systems interact.

The Bern native and Carmel Valley mother of four worked and studied for 12 years in Japan, Europe and the U.S. before deciding to channel her zeal for science into the art of confection.

Although she’s not a chocolatier, she’s been an entrepreneur “since I’ve known how to walk. Molecular biology is great science, and for me, it’s the passion (that drove my interest). Teuscher has that passion, and I’m trying to transfer it to my clients.

Passion first.”

She exercises hers from a 400square-foot shop whose Zurichbased firm makes more than 200 varieties of handmade confections and pastries. The company was the brainchild of chocolatier Dolf Teuscher Sr., who founded his first store in 1932 inside a confectioner’s shop built at suburban Toesstal in 1647.

Teuscher combed the planet for the finest nuts, fruits, cocoa and marzipan; painstaking trial and error yielded an onrush of recipes that any number of media outlets call among the best in the world. If the fresh oranges from Sicily or the Turkish rose oil don’t make you a believer in the ingredients, the signature Don Perignon champagne-

infused butter cream truffles will.

Company president Dolf Teuscher Jr. coordinates weekly product shipments to 23 stores over four continents. The nearest regional outlet to La Jolla is in Beverly Hills.

Bacon declined to cite her annual budget, explaining that her venture’s recent arrival precludes any projection of revenue.

“To find a base here was not easy,” Bacon continued. “I needed a beautiful ZIP code like La Jolla, because it’s high-end chocolates. I didn’t

want to go downtown, because tourists come to areas like La Jolla and (generate) foot traffic, and we fit in with the neighborhood.”

At the same time, Bacon echoes Teuscher’s vehement claim that the cost of his product is well within the American high-end market.

“Not everyone can have a Maserati or a Bentley,” she says, “but everyone can have one of our chocolates. You don’t have to afford much of it. It’s very unique that way.”

No sooner has Bacon’s franchise opened than plans for the Teuscher Christmas collection will get under way. Then come Valentine’s Day, Easter and a hundred other markers for chocolate-centered bliss.

Come and listen to the ‘Whispers from the Light’ with Gary Boriero Doing it Better

Have you wondered what was there before the beginning of our universe before the big bang? Maybe it always was! Our minds cannot fathom eternity. Birds migrate by some magnetic resonances we don’t comprehend. What else is there in that unseen world that our limited minds cannot fathom such as the dark energy coursing through us and around us?

Many of us have a sixth sense and have known things that we had no way of knowing, for which there is no explanation, or have had strange premonitions that have come true.

There are people who are seers

and can lead us to this unknown world and make it known. Gary Boriero was born with psychic gifts and shares his journey towards enlightenment with us. His new book, “Whispers from the Light” (Balboa Press, 2017), takes readers to another realm apart from the physical senses, beyond the ones that have trapped us into believing that this is all there is. and work on several projects together.

As we were getting to know each other, Gary shared his belief in past lives and introduced me to the idea that we shared other lives together.

Not believing in reincarnation, I was very skeptical. He suggested I start paying attention to what I intuited—to the vague feelings of knowing something, without knowing what it is. I did and indeed experienced unexplained occurrences I would not have noticed beforehand.

I discovered a new sense of awareness within myself.

During his deep meditations, Gary receives messages from the beyond.

He can see the traumas in people’s current and past lives, and thus can understand their sometimes seemingly unexplainable behaviors. I was a doubter at the beginning of our weekly meetings. I am that 90-year old skeptical woman he mentions in his book. I would come with a list of management issues working as a business consultant, and he would encounter with spiritual guidance.

We helped each other grow. I had always believed (and still do) that our brain’s tendency to explain the unexplainable is by inventing a realm beyond our world from figments of our imaginations. Our brains also ascribe intentionality to events where none exist—yet there are synchronicities beyond coincidences As far as I can remember I have always wondered: What else is out there that I can’t see, can’t hear, don't know? Somehow I felt I was missing something I might discover if only I had a road map and a guide.

Gary Boriero provides the road map, the guidance and the realization that everything and anything is indeed possible.

Gary believes that we are the most powerful creators of our own lives, that many of us live trapped in the realm of the physical senses, and that beyond these illusions and distractions lays another world—one of miracles, infinite love, forgiveness and acceptance. Here are a few of the ideas he expands upon:

Love unconditionally. When you judge, you judge yourself for we are all one.

Ego demands love for all the wrong reasons.

Silence is the realm where most things are learned and understood.

We are all one gigantic soul of interconnected energy.

I found his many concepts both stimulating and perceptive. By reading his book, I gained insight into a new territory that eluded me before.

I am less of a skeptic and more openminded to examine new ideas. You, too, will be touched by how compelling “Whispers from the Light” can be. University City Community Associ- EdUCate! honors teachers ation membership drive underway The annual UCCA membership drive is currently underway for 2018. Membership expenses range from $20 for individuals, to $100 as a gold supporter. UCCA membership dues are used to provide support and funding for many of the events and worthwhile organizations of University City. UCCA also sponsors the monthly newsletters, beautification projects such as the street banners, utility box artwork, and street median maintenance, as well as neighborhood watch, and the Holiday Tree and Menorah Lighting. Membership dues enabled UCCA to support the 4th of July Celebration, Summer Concerts, Library Friends, EdUCate!, school and sports team projects and fundraisers, and National Night Out. Hundreds of UCCA volunteer residents joined UCCA to help with these events and projects as well as many others.

The monthly UCCA meetings, at the community library on Governor Drive, provides a forum for residents to discuss concerns such as traffic safety, neighborhood cleanup, short term rentals, and Miramar air traffic. The monthly gatherings are a chance to meet other neighbors and provide regular updates from local law enforcement and fire/rescue officers, and state and local leaders.

Shores Association: Large-scale parking project fast-tracked

BY DAVE SCHWAB La Jolla Shores Association in November got good news that public review for a UC San Diego largescale parking project has been fasttracked, that the university also has a new fire station in the works, and that the community's annual fall festival was a big hit.

In October, UC San Diego rep Anu Delouri presented LJSA on plans for the Voigt Parking Structure, a proposed project with a four-story, twobay parking structure supporting 840 parking spaces. Delouri told them the public review period on the project would end Nov. 9, which

prompted LJSA boardmembers to complain that wasn't enough time for them, or the community, to review it.

“We (UC San Diego) did work hard and got the project out starting Nov. 1 for a 45-day public review until Dec. 15, when comments will close on all the environmental impacts,” said Delouri.

Delouri also touched on another UC San Diego project, a proposed new fire station that the city, its FireRescue Department and university officials are negotiating to build.

“Sounds like there's a lot going on,” noted LJSA president Nick LeBeouf.

The university’s Physical and Community Planning division said the new station would be built in the northwest corner of the campus, just south of where Genesee Avenue and North Torrey Pines Road intersect. Estimates are the station could be completed in spring 2020.

Plans are for the new $10 million to $12 million UC San Diego Fire Station to have the university fund construction, while the city covers personnel and operations, expected to cost somewhere between $1.5 million and $4 million annually.

Discussion of ongoing UC San Diego construction projects prompted LJSA board to express its prefer-

ence for “where” new construction ought to occur.

Dolores (Dede) Donovan moved, and the board approved, drafting a letter expressing the advisory group's “concerns about the placement of buildings on campus, requesting they be built away from the edges of the campus where it intersects with the community.”

“Bare in mind that the unversity has grown by several thousand students, which doesn't account for all the people that work there,” noted LJSA boardmember Mary Munk.

“The (Mid-Coast) trolley will not be up in this part of campus,” pointed out boardmember Janie Emerson.

In other action: • Angie Preisendorfer of La Jolla Shores Business Assocation reported that the 10th annual La Jolla Shores Fall Fest held Sunday, Oct. 15, with Avenida De La Playa closed off for the first time, was successful. “We made enough money to cover the cost of the event,” said Preisendorfor estimating about 400 people attended the fun afternoon, which included a merchant raffle and a children's Halloween costume contest.
